Mary Jane Brown, age 98, passed away peacefully at Via Christi Village in Manhattan, Kansas on November 15, 2023.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Mary Jane was born on February 2, 1925, in Waubaunsee, Kansas, to Edward Alexander O’Malley and Linnie Francis Spalding O’Malley. At three months of age the family moved to Clay County, eventually making their home in Clay Center. When in high school she worked at a local insurance company and JC Penny store part-time. She was the school newspaper editor, two year elected member of the student council, awarded membership in the Honorary National Science Foundation during her junior and senior years, and graduated as class salutatorian in 1942.

&nbsp; &nbsp;After high school she worked at the Fort Riley infirmary where she was awarded an application in the civil service to work at the New York Empire State Building for the Office of Scientific Research and Development where the WWII Manhattan Project was in progress. While in NYC, Mary Jane and her local friend Marjorie took in the sites where they saw Frank Sinatra, known as the "Voice," at Radio City Music Hall where he found his big start. She was able to offer her school mates and cousins who travelled through the East Coast to the European Theatre, a tour and visit to the New York City arena.

&nbsp; &nbsp;In 1945 Mary Jane returned to Clay Center, she then started her studies at Kansas State University in Manhattan. April 19, 1947, she and Beverley Brooks Brown (WWII veteran) were married. They then moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he attended chiropractic college and Mary Jane worked to put him through school, ﬁrst at the Davis Manufacturing Company of farm machines and then at the McCormick-Mather’s Publishing Company.&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;Upon graduation they moved to Manhattan where Dr. Brown practiced for 50 years. They raised two children and would travel to Clay Center and Clifton, Kansas to be with family.

&nbsp; &nbsp;At the Manhattan First Methodist Church, Mary Jane participated in the development of the Children’s Center building and the collective use of the building through the federal government and K-State programs for preschool children. In addition, her community service included membership in the League of Women’s Voters, Stagg Hill Golf Association, 4-H Club Leader, Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader, and food service volunteer at the Riley County Fair. She has been a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha social sorority since 1946.

&nbsp; &nbsp;In 1968 Mary Jane decided to go back to work at Fort Riley and worked in Logistics until deciding to work at Kansas State University. She became an Administrative Oﬃcer for the University Computing Services for 25 years serving under Directors Beth Unger and Tom Gallagher. She worked with IBM who installed the ﬁrst main-frame&nbsp;computer on campus at Cardwell Hall and was given the second email address in the program’s history. During that time, Mary Jane participated in campus wide organizational activities for State employees and served as a member of the K-State Aﬃrmative Action Committee. She was awarded twice as K-State’s runner-up Employee of the Year.

&nbsp; &nbsp;After her retirement, Mary Jane turned her interests to the Riley County Genealogical Society (RCGS) and its Library where she championed the digitalization of records. She was president for three consecutive years. Also, during that time, oversight of the RCGS Library Annex building project completed in 1997 was her focus. She remained a member of RCGS, Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, Flint Hills Unit of Riley County Family Community Education (FCE), and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

&nbsp; &nbsp;Mary Jane is survived by her son Barton B. Brown of Manhattan, Kansas, her daughter Mary Kay Brown Davis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana: niece Barbara O’Malley Burson: nephews Lynne Pugh, John O’Malley and wife Jodie, David O’Malley and wife Jennifer, and Kevin O’Malley. She is also survived by many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. B. B. Brown, D.C.: her parents Edward Alexander O’Malley and Linnie Francis Spalding O’Malley, parent-in-laws Roy Brooks Brown and Mary Evelyn Schwab Brown: siblings Mable O’Malley Pugh, Patrick O’Malley, Harold O’Malley, and Tom O’Malley.

&nbsp; &nbsp;A service to honor her life with residents, family and friends, will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Via Christi Village at 2:00 pm, 2800 Willow Grove Road, Manhattan, Kansas. Mary Jane willed her body to science at the University of Kansas Medical Center. A private memorial for the family will be held at a later date. In lieu of ﬂowers please donate to the Riley County Genealogical Society or organization of your choice.

Carl Dewey “Bud” Hoffsett, Jr., 96, of Wamego, Kansas, died Monday, December 11, 2023, at Vintage Park Assisted Living. He was a long-time member of the community. 

Bud was born February 16, 1927, in Wamego, the son of Carl and Sylvia (Heston) Hoffsett, Sr.&nbsp; 

He attended Wamego grade school and graduated from Wamego High School in 1945.&nbsp; Immediately after High School, Bud was drafted in the United States Army.&nbsp; He served with President Harry S. Truman’s Honor Guard for two years in Washington, D.C.&nbsp; He then re-enlisted and served as a military policeman in China.

Following his military service, Bud came home to Kansas, he worked in Wamego as a school bus driver. In 1951, he moved to California to seek better employment. He worked as the Warehouse Supervisor for A.M. Lewis, Inc., a wholesale grocery company in Riverside, California.&nbsp; 

He retired after thirty-three years.&nbsp; Bud then moved to Missouri and eventually returned to Wamego.

Bud loved to do woodworking and was quite an artist.&nbsp; He also loved to draw and paint.&nbsp; Bud had many artistic talents, including knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint.&nbsp; He was always busy tinkering with some sort of project.

Bud married Ada Carney on December 19, 1959, in Imperial, California, and together they shared two daughters. She preceded him in death on May 20, 1989.&nbsp; Bud then reconnected with an old High School sweetheart and on June 28, 1990, he married Alice Loretta Yocum.&nbsp; She also preceded him in death on March 18, 2016.

Bud is survived by his daughters, Vicki Todd (Patrick), Scottsdale, Arizona, and Carla Gordon (Curtis), Riverside, California; his four grandchildren, Craig Gordon, Lake Jackson, Texas, Lisa Baker, Phoenix, Arizona, Christi Todd and Jennifer Todd, both of Scottsdale, Arizona; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private family inurnment will be held in Wamego City Cemetery.&nbsp;

Donald William Hunt, 81, of Wamego, Kansas, formerly of Peoria, Illinois, passed away on Sunday (December 3, 2023) at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

&nbsp;&nbsp; Born December 11, 1941 in Peoria, Illinois, Don was the son of Isaac William and Anna Mae (Helms) Hunt.&nbsp; He married Darlene Kay Butler on April 8, 1961 in Peoria. She survives.

&nbsp;&nbsp; Don was of the Baptist Faith.&nbsp; He enjoyed leather work and was an accomplished builder and carpenter, Don built two of their family homes and made the cabinets for them.&nbsp; He enjoyed customizing cars and was proud of his 1951 Mercury.&nbsp; He and Darlene were members of car clubs, including Lincoln Land Kustoms and enjoyed traveling to car shows.

&nbsp;&nbsp; Don was employed for 46 years as a shipper with Keystone Steel &amp; Wire until his retirement.

&nbsp;&nbsp; Survivors include his wife, Darlene; a daughter, Donita Wagenschutz (Stephen); a daughter in law, Carol Hunt of Wamego, KS; five grandchildren, Kyle Wagenschutz, Kent Wagenschutz (Nikki), Kurt Wagenschutz, Kyle Morgan and Dustin Morgan (Megan); seven great grandchildren, Ethan, Adelyn and Wren Wagenschutz and Pemberly, Ava, Clara and Liam Morgan; and many nieces and nephews.

&nbsp;&nbsp; Mr. Hunt was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Daniel William Hunt.

Jean Brecheisen passed away peacefully on December 7th, with her family by her side. &nbsp;

She was born to Delbert and Olive Vinton on June 4th, 1929.&nbsp;Jean was raised on a farm near Melvern, Kansas. She had three older sisters, Idelle, Edith, and Wilma. 

Jean was married to her life long partner Max Brecheisen on October 30th, 1949. They were married nearly 70 years. 

For twenty years, she was a Marine Corp spouse. They had three sons together. Jerry, Neal and Mark. After military service, she worked with her husband in starting his career with Radio Shack. 

Upon retirement, they built a home on the farmstead where Jean grew up. They raised polled hereford cattle on their M&amp;J farm. They retired from the farm in 2000 and moved to Manhattan, Ks.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband Max, son Neal, and her three sisters. Survivors include sons Jerry (Maria ) and Mark (Judy) and grandchildren Stephanie Brecheisen, Chris Brecheisen, Jessica Birmingham, Jacob Brecheisen, Lucas Brecheisen, Katie Brecheisen, Amy Brecheisen and 16 great grandchildren. 

Funeral Services will be on December 13th at 11:00 am. Visitation will be prior to the service at 10:30 am at Irvin Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan, Ks.&nbsp;

Memorial contributions may be made to the College Avenue Methodist Church, Manhattan Ks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Larry Everett “Woody” Woodard, age 72 of Manhattan, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023, at his residence.

He was born on July 13, 1951, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Everett and Lydia (Wolfe) Woodard. &nbsp;He grew up in Goodland, Kansas and retired to University Park in 2017.

On May 4, 1974, he married Regina Nestor in Connecticut. &nbsp;She survives of the home.

Woody was a construction foreman for Woofter Construction in Colby and a jack of all trades. He could do electrical work, plumbing, concrete jobs and was an excellent wood craftsman. &nbsp;He raised German Shepherds and loved riding his Harley Davidson. He enjoyed music from the 60’s and 70’s, playing the harmonica and piano, watching and attending Nascar races, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Regi of Manhattan; one son, Jesse Woodard and wife Danelle of Manhattan; two daughters, Lindsey Spanier and husband Justin of Northglenn, Colorado, and Lori Barnett and husband Mac of Dighton; one brother, Monte Woodard and wife Janet of Neptune Beach, Florida; one sister, Elsie Woodard of Parsons; nine grandchildren, Macey, Liam, Jace, Brendon, Kadrick, Mason, Michael, Matthew, and Makala, and one great grandchild, Judah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Brian Woodard, a niece, Londa Bedore, and a great nephew, Dylan Brown.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 30, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Barbara E. Christie, age 91, of Council Bluffs, passed away on November 25, 2023, at Hansen House Assisted Living in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Barb was born April 20, 1932, in Omaha, the daughter of Frederick J. and Doris (Rosch) Bucknam. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs in 1950, then from St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, as a registered X-Ray Technician. She married Robert P. “Bob” Christie on January 30, 1955, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Council Bluffs. He passed away in 1999.

Barb grew up in Council Bluffs and became world traveler when she married Bob. They lived in Germany and England while he was in the Air Force. After his retirement they returned to Council Bluffs. She ran her own business sewing and doing alterations, then working for the Pottawattamie County Treasurer’s office where she became a Deputy County Treasurer. After retirement her two passions were St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and the Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society. When she wasn’t busy at church or the PCGS, she kept her hands busy doing handcrafts, sewing, knitting, crochet, tatting, counted cross stitch and time with friends. There were many other things about Barb that could be written; her family hopes you are blessed by your memories of them.

Survivors include her two children: Mary Sue (Bob) White of Omaha and Rod (Melinda) Christie of Waterville, Kansas, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and by Aunt Betty and Aunt Carol.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant brother Fred Bucknam Jr.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 22 Dillman Drive in Council Bluffs. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Council Bluffs with a lunch following at the church.

Melinda Annette Hagenmaier, age 60, of Randolph, passed away Friday evening, November 24, 2023, at the KU Medical Center after a courageous three&nbsp;year long battle with colon cancer.

She was born on November 4,&nbsp;1963, the daughter of James &amp; Lucy (Parker) Wells, the youngest of nine children.&nbsp; She grew up in Kansas City, MO and finished her high school career in Minden, NE.&nbsp;

Melinda had worked for the United States Postal service for 11 years, most recently at the Clay Center office, where she enjoyed her co-workers and meeting and greeting her postal patrons.&nbsp; Melinda’s family meant everything to her, and she worked tirelessly showing her love to all of them.&nbsp; She was especially excited for the upcoming marriage of her son, Dakota and future daughter-in-law, Alexandria Capp and had recently hosted an engagement party for them.&nbsp; Melinda was surprised to have all her sisters show up to her house for an early 60th&nbsp;Birthday celebration to get her crown, which was passed down for each sister’s 60th&nbsp;Birthday.&nbsp; Melinda was very crafty, with Hobby Lobby being one of her favorite stops.&nbsp; She enjoyed decorating for the holidays, Christmas being her favorite, so she could display her large Santa collection.&nbsp; She was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Nebraska Cornhusker football fan.&nbsp; She loved camping with family and her and Robbie had worked to renovate two campers, the first one lovingly known as “The Turd”.&nbsp; The second one she used as therapy to keep her mind busy while facing the daily challenges the cancer presented, which she met with strength and courage.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Hagenmaier of the home; two daughters, Kassie (Adam) Cote, &nbsp;and Khyla Nelson; one son Dakota Hagenmaier (Ali); her six grandchildren, Connor, Otto, Jocelyn, Aurora, Robyn and Oliver who were the light of her life; eight siblings, Judy (Jim) Runions, Gary (Sandy) Wells, Wayne (Judy) Wells, Diane (Gary) Currence, David (Brenda) Wells, Madonna (Bob) Bishop, Becky (Randy) Watson and Jimmy (Trish) Wells; two sisters-in-law, Lori (Jay) Anderson and Shelly (Marvin) Mugler; one brother-in-law, Dennis Hagenmaier and numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.&nbsp;

Wanda Elaine (Carter) Laflin 86, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023, in her sleep at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie, KS.&nbsp;

She was born in Clay Center, KS and later moved to Rushville, MO with her family. &nbsp;Wanda married William Laflin and moved to Nickerson, KS where she was a housewife and mother for many years, then worked as a security guard at Cessna, and as a travelling CNA.&nbsp;

Wanda was the daughter of James and Jessie (Dunavan) Carter of Rushville, MO who preceded her in death, as well as her husband, William, and three siblings, James Carter II, La Forest “Red” Carter, and Marietta Duty. &nbsp;Wanda is survived by her children, Von Laflin, Wendy Laflin, three grandchildren, Logan Hicks, Aubrey Heckathorn and Troy Laflin as&nbsp;well as 3 great-grandchildren. &nbsp;

Cenith Delane Cowing, 88, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2023, at her family home in Clay Center, KS after a long battle with Parkinson’s dementia. Cenith was born on February 27, 1935, on the family farm near Lucas, KS, the last child of 10 children born to Everett and Myra Wood. She attended Downs High School. She met and married John Leonard (Bunky) Cowing. They made their home together in Clay Center for 71 years.

Cenith was a seamstress and homemaker while raising her family, later working at Presbyterian Manor as a cook before joining her husband and son in running Cowing’s Antiques in downtown Clay Center for many, many years. Cenith was also very involved in her church and women’s groups, teaching Sunday School and VBS for decades at Clay Center Christian Church.

Cenith was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved babysitting and doing things with her “grands”: Kathy’s Jeremy and Carrie, Robin’s Sarah and Jonathan, and Gina’s Nathan, Gabrielle and Micah. Her “greats” were also a tremendous joy and delight for her when they came along: Jeremy and Karla’s Emilee and Aiden, Carrie’s Gavin and Jt, Nathan and Nicole’s Emmett and Conrad. Nothing seemed to please her more than a baby to hold or a little one to entertain, even in her final months.&nbsp;

Throughout her life Cenith also especially enjoyed homemaking, sewing, reading, daily crosswords, Sunday drives, card parties, vacationing with family, making every holiday special, family reunions, anything to do with angels (especially guardian angel pictures with children), teaching children about Jesus, and any and every opportunity to spend time with family and friends.&nbsp;

Cenith was preceded in death by her parents, her son Sam, her half-siblings Pat, Mike, Evelyn and Pauline, brothers Doyle, Norris, Olin, Orin, Arven, and a sister, Carol Rogers.

Survivors include her husband John, brothers Loy Wood of KC, MO and Arden Wood of Weymouth, MA, sister Sally Cooper of Osborne, KS, daughters Kathy (Roy) Sweet of Clay Center, Robin Butterworth of Glenpool, OK, and Gina (Don) Burman of Lawrence, KS. She will also be dearly missed by grandchildren Jeremy and Karla Sweet of Clay Center, Carrie Alton of Clay Center, Sarah Butterworth of Glenpool, OK, Jonathan Stidman, Tulsa, OK, Nathan and Nicole Burman, KC, MO, Gabrielle Burman, Dallas, TX and Micah Burman, NYC, NY, her great-grandchildren Emilee, Aiden, Gavin, Jt, Emmett and Conrad, as well as countless other relatives and friends.&nbsp;

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Clay Center Christian Church, 1021 Crawford St. This service will be immediately followed by a short graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center, KS.

Frank Purling, Jr., 75 of Morganville, Kansas, died November 22, 2023 at the Midland Care Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. &nbsp;He was born on August 7, 1948 in Clay Center, Kansas, the son of Frank Purling, Sr. and Darlene Mae Langley &nbsp;&nbsp;

Frank was raised in Clay Center and graduated with the Class of 1966 from CCCHS. &nbsp;He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam war. &nbsp;Frank returned to Clay Center and later moved to Manhattan, Kansas and worked in construction for many years. &nbsp;In the 1990’s, he moved to Colorado and started ranching. &nbsp;Frank returned to the Clay Center area and continued ranching. &nbsp;He was a member of Cowboys for Christ and a past member of the American Legion. As a veteran himself, Frank loved the United States and believed wholeheartedly in the promise of freedom. Led by his Christian faith in all aspects of life, Frank was honorable, generous, and kind. &nbsp;Frank loved country music; a good laugh; authentic company; fresh, open air; the sunrise, sunset and a good honest day's work in between. Frank loved animals, seeing them as a blessing and as companions. Frank's ability to understand and communicate with animals was a gift and, in this gift, he found his calling. Frank loved life and had the courage to live his life to its fullest. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Barb Wilson.

He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer and husband Michael Baker of Prairie Village, Kansas and Jill Burgess of Lenexa, Kansas; sister, Linda and husband Sam Gibbs of Clay Center, Kansas; brother, Tom Purling of Clay Center, Kansas; 4 Grandchildren and 1 Great-grandson.

Frank Purling Jr.

&nbsp;Rodney E. "Chip" Wolf, 70, of Junction City, Kansas died Monday, November 27, 2023 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

Rodney was born December 22, 1952, in Salina, Kansas the son of Earl R. and Mary (Weaver) Wolf. In 1953, he moved to White City, Kansas with his family. He attended school in White City. After his freshman year of school, he transferred to Chapman and graduated from Chapman High School with the class of 1970. He attended Flint Hills Technical College, Cloud County Community College and Kansas State University.

Rodney farmed many years in southern Geary County. While farming, he also worked as the city marshal in White City, Kansas. He later worked as an appraiser for Geary County. In 1988, he went to work for Foot Locker working his way into management. He retired in 2007. He worked as a reserve deputy for Geary County Sheriffs Department.

He married Connie Close August 20, 1987 in Junction City, Kansas. Survivors include his wife Connie of Junction City, Kansas; one son, Tony Wolf and his wife Sharon of Milford, Kansas; two daughters, Brandi Wolf of Milford, Kansas and Julie Bender and her husband Len of Chapman, Kansas; four grandsons, Cameron, Chance, Konner, and Tyler; one granddaughter, Courtney; two great-grandchildren, Josie and Kasen. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents.

Keith Blasing, AKA “Bubble Guppy”, age 59, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully in is sleep on November 18, 2023 in Manhattan.

Keith had many passions. He loved to fish and create many things. He was very talented at everything he did and he loved music.

Keith has two children, Matthew Volle of Topeka, Kansas and Cody Focht of St. Joseph, Missouri; also, his four grandchildren: Lilyanna, Zaci, Remington, and Brantley.

He was preceded in death by his parents Max and Norma Blasing, and his sister Letah Gerdes.

In addition to his children and grandchildren, he is also survived by his siblings: Kevin Blasing (Darlene) of Atchison, Kansas, Carolyn Hall (Bill) of Gower, Missouri, Kurtis Blasing of Manhattan, Kansas, Kim Blasing of Manhattan, Kansas, and Karen Bartlett (Steve) of Camden Point, Missouri.

Frederick L. “Lee” O’Neill, of Manhattan, died Friday November 17, 2023 at the Collins House at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan. He was 98 years old.

He was born May 5, 1925 at home on the farm near Alma, Kansas, the son of Robert and Sarah (Crider) O’Neill, along with his two brothers and three sisters.

Lee attended area rural schools, graduating from Leonardville High School in 1943. He contracted polio immediately thereafter. It kept him from service in WWII and delayed his enrollment in college. After one year at Kansas State, he attended Pittsburg State, graduating in 1950 with a degree in business.

He worked for Western Auto until he was invited to serve in the Korean War. He was stationed at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado for two years, where he met and married Emma Loreta Martendale of Boise, Idaho. Their family eventually grew to include a son and two daughters.

After his military service, Lee worked for Standard Oil and General Foods, until enrolling at the University of Idaho to earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. He then worked in registrar, admissions, and research positions at the University of Idaho.

A plan for a one-year family travel by trailer was cut short when they settled in a remote area of British Columbia, Canada. Lee operated as a guide-outfitter for hunting and fishing, and he also had summer youth camps.

With his children getting older and marriage ending, the Canadian property and business were sold and Lee returned to Kansas. He was then married to Carol Faulconer Harris in 1985. He went to work as Assistant to the Graduate Dean at Kansas State University until his retirement in 1991.

Lee took pride in extensive floral and gardening, and caring for the birds, squirrels and calico cats. He enjoyed watching the KSU Wildcat Women’s Basketball Team. Lee loved to travel, especially between his Kansas and Canadian families’ and a tour of Ireland and Scotland in 1985. He was proud of his Irish heritage, which manifested in his love of singing, conversation, and storytelling - stories that often grew in the re-telling. He was an accomplished dancer. He and Carol met at a dance and dancing filled many hours of their life together.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Mary Howard (Orville), Ella May Howard (Frank), and Violet Haffener; his brothers, Robert O’Neill (Kathleen), and Frank O’Neill (Coe); and his first wife Lorri O’Neill.

In British Columbia, Canada, Lee is survived by his son Michael O’Neill (Jill), daughter Linda O’Neill, daughter Nancy O’Neill (Max Sherwood); three grandchildren: Jesse (Michaela), David, and Danielle O’Neill; three great-grandchildren: Alexis, Violet, and Archer O’Neill.

He also leaves his wife Carol; and Carol’s children, daughter Laura Harris (Linda Curd), of Lexington, Kentucky, daughter Charlotte Harris, of Phoenix, Arizona, and son Steve Harris, of Kansas City, Missouri; and granddaughter, Jaedyn Harris, of Richmond, Missouri.

Lee’s “farewell party” will be held on Monday November 27, 2023. His wishes were to be cremated. Inurnment will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, on the O’Neill gravesite. Celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas, with Rev. John Collins officiating. A reception will follow the services at the church in the fellowship hall.

Lee was blessed to be in excellent and loving care at the Collins House at Meadowlark Hills through the last difficult years of his illness. Dorothy Jean Zabel, 91, of rural Westmoreland, Kansas, died Sunday, November 26, 2023, at the Onaga Community Hospital. &nbsp;She was a life-long resident of the community.

Dorothy was born on January 17, 1932, in rural Onaga, the daughter of Walter F. and Hazel (Nightingale) Rollenhagen. &nbsp;She attended local grade school and graduated in 1950 from Westmoreland High School.

Dorothy married Eldon Carl Zabel in Wamego, Kansas, on January 20, 1951. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on September 6, 2016.

Dorothy was a dairy farmer. &nbsp;She and Eldon, side by side, owned and operated their family dairy operation northeast of Westmoreland. &nbsp;She also worked in the Pottawatomie County Clerk’s Office for over 15 years.

Dorothy loved her farm life, especially all the animals. &nbsp;She loved her cats and dogs, particularly collie dogs, and called each of her cows by name. &nbsp;She enjoyed growing a large garden and watching sports. &nbsp;She was a fan of Kansas State football and the Kansas City Chiefs, she also enjoyed the Kansas City Royals baseball games. &nbsp;Dorothy was a member of the Dairy Farmers of America (formerly Mid-American Dairymen) and St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Doug Zabel, Onaga, Allan Zabel and Mina Grutzmacher (Lance), both of Westmoreland; her grandchildren, Nicole Duggan (Ron), Lisa DeWeese (Ryan), Mitchel Grutzmacher (Heather), Gina Roberts (Ian), Marshal Zabel (Kelsey), Jarod Zabel (Sheila), and Audra Pendleton (Kenny), her sister Mary Mayer, Westmoreland; and nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. &nbsp;Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Tyler Zabel, her great-granddaughters, Mariah Walter, and Emma Grutzmacher, and her brothers, Donald Rollenhagen and Clinton Rollenhagen.

Earl Howard (Perky) Perkins Jr. passed away September 2, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Earl was born in Junction City on April 2, 1951 to Earl Sr. and Betty (Pitts) Perkins.

Earl was a man for all seasons and a passionate traveler. He grew up a military brat and his love for traveling grew with his service in the US Navy. 

A great athlete in his own right and an even better friend to all he celebrated life with. Earl graduated from Junction City High School in 1969 where he starred in football, basketball, and tennis and led JCHS to the 1969 state championship in football. Following his graduation, he played football at Independence Junior college and then joined the US Navy. 

Following his service in the Navy he settled in California where he played and coached tennis from 1976- 1990. His love for traveling led him to many stops along his journey where he finally settled in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

Earl was known for his athleticism but also for his strong relationship with his teammates such as Denival and Jimmy Grant, Fred Starks and Les Chaves. He was known for his strong will and tenacious love for his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James O. Beasley and sister Kem L. Perkins. He is survived by his brothers: Moses White, Eugene Perkins, Larry (Diane) D. Perkins, Sr., and Richard (Nancy) Perkins and sister Beatrice K. Perkins; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Celebration of life service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at the William L. Talbott VFW Post #8773 on 1215 S. Washington, Junction City Kansas and will be followed by a reception in his memory.

Robert Edward Patterson Born December 18, 1951, in Giessen Germany. Robert whose birth name was Henry Bernd Zerwas, was loved from the start, and was adopted to expand the family of his beloved mother Edna Patterson and the man for whom he was named, her husband, Robert B. Patterson. Robert grew up a child of the military but spent most of his childhood in the Junction City, Kansas area. Known for his charisma and athletic ability, both were on full display at Junction City High school where he graduated.

After graduation Robert took his strengths to the collegiate arena where he attended Wichita State University prior to joining the Army. He took all he learned through these experiences and shifted them into a career in Finance working for the State of Kansas where he left a lasting impact.

Robert’s family was always his passion. His love for his sister Jackie and brother Darryl, along with his enduring commitment to his mother Edna all who proceeded him in death was evidence of his immense devotion. He adored his younger sisters Christal and Abia, they gave him an opportunity to be the protector and advocate he wanted to be for all he called family. A proud father and uncle, Robert was always eager to share a story with and about his “kids” with anyone he encountered.

In addition to his love for family Robert loved sports, the Raiders especially. He also loved to cheer on his family in any of their athletic endeavors from soccer to basketball to football. To know Robert was to love him, his stories and jokes, his joy was contagious. He constantly kept everyone around him entertained.

Robert was preceded in death by his mother Edna Patterson, father Robert B. Patterson, brother and best friend, Daryl Jackson and cherished sister Jackie Patterson. He is survived by two loving sisters, Christal Padilla, and Abia McFarland (Bobby).Robert leaves to mourn his passing his five children, Rahsaan Shears (Jamal), Robert-John Patterson, Edward Patterson (Sam), Kathleen Wilson, and Taylor Wilson (Devonta), along with seven grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Marion Waldraudt Hayden peacefully passed away in her husband’s arms on November 10, 2023, at the age of 62 at her residence in Junction City, Kansas. She was born on August 24, 1961, in Furth, Germany.Marion will be dearly missed by her husband, Dave Hayden; her daughters, Amanda Vilander (Airrion) and Denise Howard (Jacob); her son, Naythan Hall; her stepdaughter Tabbitha Hayden (Larry); grandchildren, Caden Reece, Larry and Lorenzo Jones and her best friend and sister Dorine Royse (Frank).

Marion was a loving and kindhearted person always radiating warmth and compassion to those around her. A Celebration of Life service will be held in honor of Marion at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share stories, memories and pay tribute to Marion’s life. 

Marion was proceeded in death by her mother Anneliese Lincoln and cherished Oma Gertrude Lange, who influenced her early years. During this time of loss, let us remember Marion for the love and joy she brought into our lives. She was born on August 24, 1961, in Furth, Germany.Marion will be dearly missed by her husband, Dave Hayden; her daughters, Amanda Vilander (Airrion) and Denise Howard (Jacob); her son, Naythan Hall; her stepdaughter Tabbitha Hayden (Larry); grandchildren, Caden Reece, Larry and Lorenzo Jones and her best friend and sister Dorine Royse (Frank).Marion was a loving and kindhearted person always radiating warmth and compassion to those around her. Carla Jaylene Allen, 73, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on November 19, 2023, at Valley View Senior Life Center.&nbsp; A family led service will take place at a later date.

Carla was born on April 1, 1950, to Jay and Dolores (Staufenberg) Allen in Junction City, Kansas. Shortly after leaving high school, she found herself on post working in a Fort Riley cafeteria. Working there, she was introduced to a young soldier who later became her future husband. He made sure to visit her for lunch every single day to make a good impression. They decided to raise their family here in Junction City, Kansas and to grow old together.

She is survived by her son, Dale Allen; two grandchildren, Cory and Cody; one brother, John J. Thompson and one sister, Dee Thompson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SFC (RET) Jaime A. Garcia, 70, of Milford, Kansas, passed away on November 15, 2023, at Stormont-Vail Healthcare. A family led celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Jaime was born on June 4, 1953, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His stories growing up there were always adventurous. At seventeen years old, Jaime decided to enlist into the United States Army, bringing him to Fort Riley, Kansas. This was the start of his new life. Soon after being stationed on Fort Riley, he met the love of his life, Ellen, at the bowling alley on Fort Riley. Soon after they married on July 5,1975. They shared 48 years of marriage together raising their three daughters. During his military career, he and his family were stationed in Germany three times and were stationed three times in the United States. He served his country honorably for 21 years, earning many awards, decorations, medals, and badges.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen; three daughters, Kristina (Gabe) Gillick, Monika (Derrick) Tomes, and Jessika (Aron) Haselbauer; four grandchildren, Brooklyn (Geo) Lee, Jayla Haselbauer, Ethan Boggs, and Tristin Haselbauer and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Chase.Jaime A. Garcia was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a self-titled "expert" fisherman.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kendall Damaricus Talley, 25, of Junction City, Kansas died Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Stormont Vail - Flint Hills Campus Hospital in Junction City, Kansas. Kendall was born February 26, 1998. Kendall was a stranger to no one, and a friend to all. He grew up being a part of theater, band, 4H, and baseball. He loved to go boating on the lake, creating art of any kind, using tools, and just being with his friends and family. Kendall graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 2016. He attended Wichita Area Technical College, and was currently working for Max Motors of Manhattan. Kendall’s charismatic personality, loving heart, and infectious smile was uplifting to anyone around him. He loved his role as father, and adored his baby Kahlani. He was a remarkable person as a son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and as a friend.

Survivors include daughter Kahlani Talley, of Wichita, Kansas, and her mother Jillian Bennington; mother and father, Brian Jackson and Christina Talley-Jackson of Junction City, Kansas; two sisters, Brianna Talley and Krysta Talley both of Junction City, Kansas; grandparents, Samuel and Cynthia McCray of Lancaster, Texas and James and Linda Talley of Milford, Kansas.

Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home.

Shirley Rose Schurle, age 88 of Manhattan, passed away Friday, November 10, 2023, at Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

She was born on October 12, 1935, in Manhattan, the daughter of Darrell and Rose (Riniker) Russell.

She married George Lyman Schurle on February 24, 1954.

She worked along with her husband as owner and operators of Schurle’s Water Conditioning.&nbsp; She was a member of the Sedalia Community Church and enjoyed being outdoors working in her flower garden.&nbsp; Shirley loved attending her grandchildren’s activities and K-State sporting events.

She is survived by her husband, Lyman Schurle of Manhattan; four sons, DeWayne Schurle and wife Julie of Manhattan, David Schurle of Riley, Darrell Schurle and wife Lisa of Manhattan, and Jamie Schurle of Colorado; 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jim Russell; two sisters, Sally Warren and Francis Fugate, and one grandson, Christopher Schurle.

A Celebration of Life will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on November 27, 2023, at the Sedalia Community Church Annex.&nbsp; Casual attire is recommended with K-State attire encouraged.

A private family inurnment will be in the Valley View Memorial Park.

Eric E. Caldwell, age 52, of Manhattan, died November 14, 2023.

He was born March 30, 1971, in Leoti, Kansas, the son of Larry E. Caldwell and E. Louise Lomax.

Eric graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1989. He began his culinary career at Prairie Dunes Country Club and then moved to Manhattan, where he became an integral part of the food and beverage operations initially at Manhattan Country Club, and then for 12 years at Harry’s and Harry’s Catering. Most recently, he was co-owner and manager of Varsity Donuts, where he served as a mentor to his young team members, not only teaching them how to manage a well-run kitchen, but also imparting valuable life skills. He cared for his staff deeply, His job was his life.

Eric was a musician, artist, and incredible chef. He was humble but extremely accomplished. He will be missed greatly by the Manhattan restaurant community, his friends, and the many people whose lives he influenced.

Eric had a variety of interests and passions, including upholstery, History, his vintage watch collection and listening to Elvis and Johnny Cash.
