Don Eldon Emley, 91, died peacefully the morning of November 12, 2023 at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice in Manhattan, Kansas.

Don was born on December 31, 1931 in Mount Ayr, Iowa the second of two children born to Holly and Ella Emley. Don grew up in Clarinda, Iowa graduated from Clarinda High School, and after some college coursework, he joined the Navy. He served from January 1951 to November 1954 as a Metalsmith 3rd Class on the USS Kankakee.

After his service in the Navy Don worked at his father’s auto body shop in Clarinda and during that time he had his eye on a pretty young woman named Sandra. The couple was married on March 18, 1956, at the Yorktown, Iowa United Methodist Church.

Following his passion for mechanical work, Don and Sandra moved to Oklahoma where Don attended the Spartan School of Aeronautics. They lived in Oklahoma City for 11 years while Don worked in the aviation maintenance industry. All four of Don and Sandra’s children were born in Oklahoma. Don then accepted a position at the Manhattan airport as service manager and remained there until his retirement in 1996. During his years there he hired his children to hold various part time jobs and there is more than one entertaining story about the mechanical abilities (or lack thereof) passed down to the kids in varying degrees.

Don lived a life of service. Not only was he a devoted mechanic, making sure planes were ready to go when clients needed them, day or night, holidays and weekends, he served his church as a member of the Board of Trustees, volunteering to repair whatever was needed. He also kept busy repairing the vehicles of 4 teenagers, no small task. All of this was done without complaint and a quiet, steady presence.

A passion of Don’s was antique cars and in 1979 he came home with a 1948 Buick Roadmaster convertible that became his pride and joy. He spent the next several years working to fully restore the car, doing everything from the body work to electrical, mechanical and upholstery work. The car provided Don and Sandra with many enjoyable road trips, car shows, and chauffeuring opportunities. In 2003 Don and his sons and sons-in-law participated in “The Hemmings Motor News Great Race,” a time, speed, and endurance rally for 1974 and older collector vehicles. The car has become a source of great pride for the family and a symbol of Don’s hard work, his attention to detail in everything he did, and his acts of service which was how he showed his deep love for his family.

Don was a member of Valley Car Collectors Club, Buick Club of America, American Legion Post 17 and the K-State Flying Club.

Don was preceded in death, by wife Sandra (Isaacson) Emley, parents Holly and Ella (Doolittle) Emley, and sister Janice Buntz. Survivors include son Mark Emley (Rebecca) of Overland Park, KS; son Scott Emley (DeeAnn) of Manhattan, KS; daughters Terri Emley (Nanette) of Olathe, KS and Julie Swank, Olathe, KS. Grandchildren Michael Emley, Overland Park; Anna (Stuart) Petty, Kansas City, MO; Kailen (Derrek) Jacobsen, Manhattan, KS; Ryan Emley (Amber), Manhattan, KS; Matthew Shrader, Salina KS; Rebecca Swank, Merriam, KS; Rachel Swank, Denver, CO.; and five beloved great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday, November 30th, in the Connecting Link at First United Methodist Church.

A Celebration of Don’s Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 30th, at the First United Methodist Church, 621 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS, with Reverend Donn Voteau officiating. Private family interment with Navy Honors will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Riley County, Kansas.

One of Don’s wishes was to have a fun gathering with food and drink, music, and ice cream to celebrate his life. All friends and family are invited to join the celebration at Blue Sage Barn, 1484 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, on Thursday, November 30th, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. following the service.

Don Eldon Emley

Heaven called home one of its most passionate ambassadors, the Reverend Stanley Padgett, on November 12, 2023. &nbsp;Reverend Padgett went to his Lord surrounded by family and the music of his favorite hymns, at age 90, following a life of service to God spanning over 70 years.Reverend Padgett was born in Long Beach, CA on Sept 27, 1933. &nbsp;He was raised in Alma, Kansas on his ancestral Thoes family farm that had been established in the 1854. &nbsp;He would have graduated high school from Alma High School in 1951, but he enlisted in the Navy in 1950 to fight in the Korean War which started that year. &nbsp;He served as a radioman on the USS Philippine Sea until his honorable discharge in July 1954.&nbsp;

Stanley’s plan once the war ended was to complete college and become a lawyer. &nbsp;However, God had other ideas. &nbsp;Stanley witnessed the death of a shipmate, which had a profound effect on him, and he decided to use his talents to become a minister and make his life’s work spreading the Gospel of the Lord. &nbsp;When he was discharged after the war, he returned to Kansas and attended St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas, and then Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated in 1958. &nbsp;He became an ordained minister on May 31, 1961.

While at Concordia Seminary, he worked as an orderly at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and saw a young nurse, Norma Hauschild, doing her rounds. &nbsp;He instantly knew she was the woman he wanted to marry, and they were married on July 5, 1957. &nbsp;Over 63 years of marriage, they had eight children, one of whom died from birth defects. &nbsp;Education and work ethic were very important to Stanley and Norma, and all seven children graduated from Apache High School and went on to receive Bachelor degrees from Oklahoma State University and multiple advanced degrees. &nbsp;The children established the Padgett Endowed Presidential Scholarship in their parents’ honor at Oklahoma State University in 2002, which is awarded every year to a deserving sophomore at OSU from a rural Oklahoma community. &nbsp;Later in his life, his greatest joy was being with his grandchildren, driving thousands of miles across Oklahoma and Texas to be present in their daily lives whether it be after-school shuttling, attending school programs, or cheering at sports events.

Reverend Padgett was a dedicated evangelist who brought the Lord’s Word to several churches and communities over his 70-year career. &nbsp;He served as a minister in Drake, Missouri; Russell, Kansas; Sullivan, Missouri; Fords, New Jersey and as a missionary in Wabag, New Guinea. &nbsp;He and Norma moved to Apache, Oklahoma in 1972 where he served congregations in Apache, Chickasha, Cyril, and Anadarko and as a Civil Air Patrol Chaplain. &nbsp;He also taught courses in religion at USAO in Chickasha and was the Chaplain for the Cyril oil refinery in the 1970’s. &nbsp;He loved his country churches, and spent many years driving between three church services every Sunday morning to spread God’s word. &nbsp;His last sermon was preached by telephone on November 5, 2023 to the congregation of Peace Lutheran Church, Cyril. &nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp;Stanley is survived by his children: &nbsp;Paul Padgett and wife Sherri of Apache, OK; John Padgett and wife Natalia of Austin, TX; Michael Padgett of Stillwater, OK; Martha Ross and husband Kimble of Vilas, NC; Elizabeth Herink and husband Dan of Houston, TX; and Rebekah Cooksey and husband Jim of Prosper, TX; his siblings and their families: Carol Heflin, Judy Padgett, Patsy Willer, and Buddy Padgett; and 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Stanley is preceded in death by his wife, Norma Hauschild Padgett, his parents, Everett and Alberta Padgett, son Philip Padgett, daughter Rachel Padgett, and brother Orman Padgett.

A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 427 S. Baskett, Cyril, Oklahoma at 2:00 pm on November 22, 2023. &nbsp;A funeral will be held in his childhood church, St. John Lutheran Church in Alma, Kansas at 11:00 a.m. on November 24, 2023 followed by burial in the Alma City Cemetery. &nbsp;Everyone is welcome to pay respects at either service.&nbsp; Memorial donations may be made to Peace Lutheran Church in Cyril.

Carol Ibarra (Fumiko Haga) was born on March 15 1928 in Sendai Miyagi, Japan the daughter of Washino Omiya and Heshahalu Haga. 

She was preceded&nbsp;in Death by her husband Eliodoro T. Ibarra, daughters Sally and Florence Ibarra and Grand Daughter-in-Law Leigh Lambert. Surviving family members are son Ray Ibarra (wife Cheryl) of Junction City, KS; daughters Kathy Lambert (husband Leo) of Foristell Missouri;&nbsp; Janet Ibarra of McPherson, Kansas; grandchildren Vanessa Vande Riet (husband Rik);&nbsp; Jessica Robichaud&nbsp; (husband Terrance Knight); Kevin Lambert and Morgan Shea;&nbsp; Kyle Ibarra (wife Harmony); Cory Lambert (wife Haley); Great Grandchildren Madelin Owen and Annabel Vande Riet, Olivia Robichaud-Knight, Emma and Jack Bertrand Ryu Lambert, Aislynn McKay, Elliadora and Urijah Ibarra, Greyson and Levi Lambert, Emmarie Bender and Axel McKay.

Charles D. Kiser

Romelle Sue Van Sickle, age 80 of Riley, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

She was born on October 2, 1943 in Clay Center, the daughter of John Justis and Verna Wilemina (Bohnenblust) Wilt.

On October 20, 1963 at the Riley United Methodist Church, she married Wayne Bryce Van Sickle.&nbsp; He preceded her in death in 2021.

She worked as a secretary at Kansas Wheat Improvement and in the U.S.D. 378 Superintendent’s Office before buying the Riley Countian, where she served as the editor for 22 years.&nbsp; She was a member of the Riley United Methodist Church, Riley United Methodist Women and Riley Neighborhood Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Dana McLean and husband A.G. of Fostoria; two sons, Brian Van Sickle and wife Jennifer of Riley, and David Van Sickle and wife Kaycia of St. Marys; one sister, Corliss Fleming and husband Patrick of Lonoke, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Quint McLean, Caitlin McLean (Anna Casner), Ashley Pryor (John), Sheridan Milner (Killian), Saige Ham (Zach), Kanon Van Sickle, Rayce Van Sickle and Jett Van Sickle, and 3 great grandchildren, Caroline Pryor, Adleigh Ham and River Milner.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two great grandchildren, Hope Pryor and Rowan Pryor.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the Riley United Methodist Church with Pastor Glenn Fogo officiating.

Romelle Sue Van Sickle

Agnes Helena Garten was born August 27, 1933 in Ada, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Lena (Gronewoller) Smith. She passed away Friday, November 10, 2023 in Abilene at the age of 90.

Agnes graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Salina. She was the school secretary at St, Andrew’s School in Abilene for 50 years before retiring a short time ago. Agnes was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, a past 4-H member in Saline County, A 4-H leader of Sand Springs Rustlers, Rural Life member, won the Master Farmer Homemaker award and was the past Grand Marshall for the Central Kansas Free Fair. 

On December 29, 1953 Agnes was united in marriage to Frank I. Garten in Salina. He passed away July 19, 1996. Agnes is survived by her daughters: Ellen Haslouer (Chuck) of Hope; Mary Koster of Wichita; Ann McConkey (Richard) of Topeka; and Karen Orr (Troy) of Assaria. Her son's: Carl Garten (Christine) of Salina; Casey Garten (Cindy) of El Dorado Hills, California; and Bruce Garten (Jessica) of Belgrade, Maine. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Marilyn Garten of Manhattan, Kansas and 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Along with her husband Frank, Agnes was preceded in death by her son Mark, grandson, Jarett Kelley and siblings Donald, Doris, Cecelia and Carol.

Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the St. Andrews Catholic Church with Father Peter O'Donnell as Celebrant. Kay A. Sanders passed away peacefully Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the Enterprise Estates Nursing Home. Kay was born April 11, 1945, in Industry, Kansas to Lee and Edna (Nichols) Enyart. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1963. Kay married George Sanders on December 5, 1964, and they were blessed with four children: Leon, Diana, Gary, and Mark. Kay enjoyed working at Russel-Stover for 10 years until retirement. 

Kay truly lived life to the fullest with a great sense of adventure and zest for life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her family and loved ones. Kay lived her last 8 years at Abilene Plaza where she created many close friendships that she cherished deeply. Kay will be remembered by her loving, fiery spirit, and contagious laugh which brought joy to all those around her. 

Kay is survived by her daughter Diana Vandergriff and her husband Dayle of Houston, Texas, sons Leon Sanders of Abilene, Gary Sanders and his wife Jodi of Dallas, Texas, Mark Sanders and his wife Kaleigh of Salina, seven grandchildren Cody, Carly, Garrett, Gannon, Sarah, Charleigh, and Colston, two great grandchildren Haston and Waylon; and many, many friends. Gerald Robert “Jerry” Kaufholz, age 91, of Manhattan, died at Ascension Via Christi Village on Wednesday November 8, 2023.

Jerry lived at Garden Grove Apartments, and has been a long-time resident of the Manhattan area. He was born October 16, 1932 in Junction City, Kansas.

Jerry served in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed out of Norfolk, Virgina. While in the Navy he meet and married Faye Louise Fant of Union, South Carolina.

They had four children: Jerry Jr. (Susan), Dewayne (Darlene), Lane (Tammy)and Melinda Jane Smith (Curtis) all of Union South Carolina.

After the Navy Jerry did electronic work. In later years he did custodian work at K-State University.

In retirement Jerry loved to work with wood. He made many chairs, tables and planters. Jerry also loved gardening and worked on two classic cars. Jerry loved visiting with people and hearing their many stories.

Jerry was preceded in death by parents Leo George Kaufholz and Helen Louise (Wilson) Kaufholz; two sisters: Helen May Zdrojowy (Stan), and Linda Kay Kaufholz; and two brothers: Leo V. Kaufholz (Irene) and James Richard Kaufholz (Carol).

Jerry is survived by two sisters: Sharon (Kaufholz) Neugent and Shirley Ann (Kaufholz) Nielsen and her husband Niel both of Manhattan, Kansas.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p .m. Friday at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan, KS, with Reverend Kevin Larson officiating.

The Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 6502, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bernice A. Difilippo, 89, of Manhattan, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 with her family by her side. She was born on October 14, 1934 in Steubenville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Jerry and Bernice (Zamana) Chmelovski.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Bernice graduated from Steubenville Catholic Center High School in 1952. She worked as a medical records secretary. She married the love of her life, Raymond Difilippo on August 15, 1953 and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to everyone. She was well known for her cooking and baking skills. She was a member of the College Avenue United Methodist Church. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, David DiFilippo, daughter, Cathy Bise and 3 brothers: Jerry, Thomas and Stanley Chmelovski.

Bernice is survived by her daughter, Raelene (Lonnie) Dawson with whom she resided; her 4 grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) Geary, Amy Bise, Justin (Rachel) Geary, and Adam (Nikki) Dawson, and 13 great grandchildren, Braidyn, Adalea, Emilya, Ean, Lexi, Ava, Noah, Gracie, Sophie, Briana, Miana, and David. She is also survived by two sister-in-laws, Vivian Fretwell and Dorothy Crosby, including many nieces and nephews. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to Pastor John Collins.

Bernice's wishes were to be cremated with no funeral services. Her ashes will be entombed in Ohio at the family's convenience.&nbsp;

Bernice A. Difilippo

Rosetta W. (Rethman) Umscheid, 89, of Flush, Kansas passed away peacefully Sunday, November 12, 2023 at Good Shepard Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas. &nbsp;

Rosie was born on September 27, 1934 on the family farm `north of St. Benedict, Kansas. &nbsp;She was the fourth of eight children born to Florentine (Olberding) and Clement B. Rethman. &nbsp;Her early life revolved around working alongside her family on the farm, which she preferred to sewing, cooking and other household chores. &nbsp;She attended St. Mary’s grade school in St. Benedict, finishing her formal education in the 8th grade.

After school she worked for a number of different businesses in the Seneca area including the CO-OP, a chiropractor’s office, and as a nanny. &nbsp;As a young woman Rosie enjoyed spending time with her many friends and attending area dances where eventually she met her future husband Donald Umscheid.

Rosie and Donnie married on September 4, 1965 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. &nbsp;They moved to Donnie’s hometown of Flush where they were blessed with 58 years together and six perfect children.

Rosie was a farmer’s wife. &nbsp;She worked in tandem with Donnie to build a successful farming operation that two of their sons continue today. &nbsp;She did what was needed, oftentimes at a moment’s notice. &nbsp;She helped in the field, moved trailers and trucks, made trips into town for parts, brought meals to the field and kept supper warm until after dark. &nbsp;All-the-while she kept the house clean enough, did mountains of laundry, tended a garden and raised kids that learned her values of hard work and goodness. &nbsp;They also all, too some degree, picked up her propensity to worry excessively. &nbsp;Rosie also made the best apple pie of all times.

She always remained devoted to her parents and siblings, insisting on weekly trips home where they and what grew to be 24 of her children, nieces and nephews would crowd into the family home for Sunday dinner. &nbsp;Those were the best of times. &nbsp;Her dedication to her parents was on full display when she put her life on hold to help them through the final years of their lives. &nbsp;This was another lesson in selflessness that her children picked up.

When Rosie finally became a grandma, her life took on new meaning as she periodically was full-time and always was as-need daycare. &nbsp;Housework and chores took a back seat, as she insisted on rocking her babies to sleep at nap time. &nbsp;Holidays were especially fun with adventures in cookie decorating and building her famous Bunny Cake. &nbsp;There were always brownies at grandma’s house.

Rosie was a life-long Catholic and long-time member of St. Joseph’s parish in Flush where she was a member of the Altar Society. &nbsp;If you called the house and got a busy signal, it was best not to try again for another hour. &nbsp;She was the reason call-waiting was invented. &nbsp;And she never let you hang up the phone or leave the house without an “I love you” and a warning to “be careful.”

In short, Rosie was a good woman. &nbsp;Grounded in her faith and love for her family. &nbsp;She will be intensely missed. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Rosie is survived by her husband Donnie, of the home, as well as her children Tina Long, Wamego; Lynne Umscheid, Wamego; David Umscheid (Terri), Onaga; Karla McGinnis (Doug), Derby; Dwight Umscheid (Jennifer), Flush; and Douglas Umscheid, Wamego; and her much spoiled grandchildren Sam, Kourtnee, Katie, Kelly, Will, Taylor, Mahkaiah and Cole. &nbsp;In 2022, Rosie was able to welcome her first great-grandchild, Freya. &nbsp;She is also survived by her sister Roberta Lierz (Marvin), Sabetha, brother and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her sisters Charlotta Burdick, Anna Sperfslage, Willa Wilhelm and Diane Mulryan and her brothers Clem Rethman, Jr. and Rupert Rethman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Flush, Kansas with Father Michael Peterson officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Flush.

Rosie will lie in state at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home on Friday, November 17, 2023&nbsp; from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Rosary Service will be Friday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Flush. The family will greet friends following the Rosary Service until 7:00 p.m.

Rethman. &nbsp;Her early life revolved around working alongside her family on the farm, which she preferred to sewing, cooking and other household chores. &nbsp;She attended St. Mary’s grade school in St. Benedict, finishing her formal education in the 8th grade.After school she worked for a number of different businesses in the Seneca area including the CO-OP, a chiropractor’s office, and as a nanny. &nbsp;As a young woman Rosie enjoyed spending time with her many friends and attending area dances where eventually she met her future husband Donald Umscheid.Rosie and Donnie married on September 4, 1965 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. &nbsp;They moved to Donnie’s hometown of Flush where they were blessed with 58 years together and six perfect children.Rosie was a farmer’s wife. &nbsp;She worked in tandem with Donnie to build a successful farming operation that two of their sons continue today. &nbsp;She did what was needed, oftentimes at a moment’s notice. &nbsp;She helped in the field, moved trailers and trucks, made trips into town for parts, brought meals to the field and kept supper warm until after dark. &nbsp;All-the-while she kept the house clean enough, did mountains of laundry, tended a garden and raised kids that learned her values of hard work and goodness. &nbsp;They also all, too some degree, picked up her propensity to worry excessively. &nbsp;Rosie also made the best apple pie of all times.She always remained devoted to her parents and siblings, insisting on weekly trips home where they and what grew to be 24 of her children, nieces and nephews would crowd into the family home for Sunday dinner. &nbsp;Those were the best of times. &nbsp;Her dedication to her parents was on full display when she put her life on hold to help them through the final years of their lives. &nbsp;This was another lesson in selflessness that her children picked up.When Rosie finally became a grandma, her life took on new meaning as she periodically was full-time and always was as-need daycare. &nbsp;Housework and chores took a back seat, as she insisted on rocking her babies to sleep at nap time. &nbsp;Holidays were especially fun with adventures in cookie decorating and building her famous Bunny Cake. &nbsp;There were always brownies at grandma’s house.Rosie was a life-long Catholic and long-time member of St. Joseph’s parish in Flush where she was a member of the Altar Society. &nbsp;If you called the house and got a busy signal, it was best not to try again for another hour. &nbsp;She was the reason call-waiting was invented. &nbsp;And she never let you hang up the phone or leave the house without an “I love you” and a warning to “be careful.”In short, Rosie was a good woman. &nbsp;Grounded in her faith and love for her family. &nbsp;She will be intensely missed. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Rosie is survived by her husband Donnie, of the home, as well as her children Tina Long, Wamego; Lynne Umscheid, Wamego; David Umscheid (Terri), Onaga; Karla McGinnis (Doug), Derby; Dwight Umscheid (Jennifer), Flush; and Douglas Umscheid, Wamego; and her much spoiled grandchildren Sam, Kourtnee, Katie, Kelly, Will, Taylor, Mahkaiah and Cole. &nbsp;In 2022, Rosie was able to welcome her first great-grandchild, Freya. &nbsp;She is also survived by her sister Roberta Lierz (Marvin), Sabetha, brother and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her sisters Charlotta Burdick, Anna Sperfslage, Willa Wilhelm and Diane Mulryan and her brothers Clem Rethman, Jr. and Rupert Rethman.Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Flush, Kansas with Father Michael Peterson officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Flush.Rosie will lie in state at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home on Friday, November 17, 2023&nbsp; from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m.Rosary Service will be Friday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp; at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Flush. David Marcus Juarez died November 2, 2023. Born January 22, 1953 in Oakland, California to mother Elva Alvarado and father Julio Juarez. Graduate of Tennyson High School in Hayward, California where he ran track and loved hitting foul baseballs; David dedicated 22 years of honorable service in the US Navy and US Coast Guard. David enjoyed watching baseball and war documentaries, cooking shows, as well as cooking for others, Lifetime and Hallmark channels, but most of all he enjoyed the company of his family.

David married Ronita Ann Persing on December 18th, 1974. He is proceeded in death by his father Julio, wife Roni and grandson Tyler. He is survived by his mother Elva Alvarado Juarez, sisters Cathe Drewes and Christina Curie, and brothers Dennis Juarez and Chris Juarez. He is survived by his 5 children Opal, Stephanie, Geoff, Domanic and Donald. Grandfather to 5 and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

David Marcus Juarez 

Kevin Lee Good, age 40, of Salina, died November 7, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

He was born December 30, 1982, in Manhattan.

Kevin graduated from Manhattan High School in 2001.

He had worked as a milker for the Kansas State University Dairy, then had a career in construction for two decades, working for Schultz Construction, Kolde Concrete, Coonrod Construction and then in Salina for Lancaster Construction. Kevin took pride in his work and in the projects that were created by his teams.

Kevin loved to be outdoors – especially fishing – and enjoyed working on the farm with his grandfather, Harold Bailey. He took interest in others, be they farm neighbors, family members or co-workers. He had a kind heart and generous spirit. His generosity lives on through his gifts as an organ donor.

In his youth he participated in Little Apple Soccer, Pillsbury 4-H Club, Manhattan High FFA and was on the Riley County 4-H Livestock Judging Team. He was a huge Boston Red Sox Fan.

Survivors include his parents Cheryl Marstall and her husband Mike and Mike Good and his wife Wanda all of Manhattan, KS; three children: Cayden and Mason Good and Kylie Zieber all of Riley, KS; one sister Kristen Turner (Thad) of Kingman, KS; and his grandfather Harold Bailey of Manhattan. He had a deep love for his children and family, including his cousins who mourn his loss.

Kevin was preceded in death by his grandparents: Bonnie Bailey and Doris and Margaret Good.

Private family graveside services will be held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery with Reverend Kevin Larson officiating. A Celebration of Kevin’s Life will be held from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. Saturday, December 2nd, at the Deep Creek Schoolhouse, 3125 Deep Creek Road, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Everett Lee “Bud” Gillispie, age 84, of Manhattan, died November 6, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

He was born December 13, 1938, in Levant, Kansas, the son of Roy Hayes and Mildred Marie (Myers) Gillispie.

Bud graduated from Levant High School and attended Fort Hays State College where he met the love of his life, Lela Kay Ewing. They were married February 21, 1959 and made the move to Manhattan in July 1959. He began his career with Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company as a Claims Underwriter and would rise to be Assistant Sales Manager under Jay Payton in 1970. He retired December 31, 2001 having spent 42 years with Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company.

In the 70s, Bud became very involved in the Manhattan Jaycee Organization, winning various awards including Outstanding Local President and Kansas Jaycee of the Year. Later, he was a member of the Optimist Organization and Solar Kiwanis.

In 1997, Bud joined Manhattan Lions Club and was very active for the next 20 years as a local and district officer, organizing various conventions and receiving many awards from International Presidents and District Governors. He was a recipient of a Melvin Jones Fellowship. Bud was also involved in service with the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and Toys for Manhattan in the 2000s.

Bud was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan.

Bud’s hobbies included woodworking, yard work and computer webpage design, as well as spending time with his grandchildren.

Bud was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather and a faithful friend to his Farm Bureau associates and will be missed by all who knew him.

His loving wife, Lela survives of the home. Additional survivors include his three children: Jeffrey Gillispie and his wife JoAnn of Bartlesville, OK, Bradley Gillispie and his wife Judy of Colorado Springs, CO, and Lori Lee and her husband Ryan of DeSoto, KS; one brother Eldon “Buck” Gillispie and his wife Betty Kay of Cortland, OH; seven grandchildren: Janelle Gillispie (NV Ozmus), Julia McKenzie (Matt), Jonathan Gillispie, Stephanie Gillispie, Jennifer Kahoe (Cooper), Travis Gillispie, and Kendra Lee; and two great-grandchildren: William and Beau McKenzie.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Arnold, Melvin, Lloyd and Lyle Gillispie, Vera Bova and Velma Barrick.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. Sunday, November 26th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Maurine Hebrank passed away November 6,2023 at Stormont Vail Health Center in Topeka KS.

She was born April 4, 1935 during a Great Plains dust storm in Quinter, Kansas to Manford and Vera (Bailey) Ulrich. She had an active childhood with her friends and with her many cousins, with whom she remained especially close throughout her life.

Maurine attended school in Quinter, graduating from Quinter High School in 1953. She attended Kansas State College and Kansas University Medical Center, receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse in December, 1957. Maurine met Kenneth Eugene Hebrank on a blind date while at KSU. They were married December 29, 1956 at the Abilene Methodist Church in Abilene, Kansas, on an unseasonably beautiful, springlike day. They made their home in many places as they followed Ken's army career, which stirred an interest in for travel in them both. When Ken retired in 1975, they made their permanent home in Manhattan, Kansas. Maurine took on a position as a school nurse with USD 383, Manhattan-Ogden, where she met many people who would become her closest and dearest friends. She was a dedicated caregiver, and was a volunteer for the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice for over 30 years.

Maurine was an avid sports fan, following the KSU Wildcats, the KU Jayhawks, and the Kansas City sports teams. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge, RV camping, and quiet time for reading. Maurine also had a witty, fun sense of humor, and gatherings with friends were always lively. She was a member of the DAR and the Manhattan Review Club. Church activities were very important to her, and she was a member of the Ogden Friendship House United Methodist Church. Maurine spent countless hours giving time and energy enthusiastically serving as a volunteer at the Friendship House of Hope.

Maurine and Kenneth were blessed with two children, Karen Ann, in 1962, and Philip Eugene, in 1966. She cherished her husband, children, and her grandson and his family, and being part of their lives. An everlasting joy was watching her great grand-daughter Ellie grow and thrive.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents Manford and Vera, her brothers Leroy Ulrich and Royer Ulrich, and sisters-in-law Marilyn Ulrich and Mary Stiver.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Buhler (Bruce), Manhattan, Kansas, son Philip, Manhattan, Kansas, grandson Brandon Schmitter, his wife Nicole and great grand-daughter Ellie Rose, Basehor, Kansas.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., November 18, 2023 at the Ogden Friendship House United Methodist Church, Ogden, Kansas. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. November 20, at the Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove, Kansas.&nbsp;

Doris was born May 5, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Willard Henry and Ethel Marie (Klien) Warren. Prior to moving to Junction City, Kansas at the age of 16, she attended school in Ladora and Marengo, Iowa. She married Kenneth A. MacLaird, Jr. on August 8, 1954 in Junction City, Kansas. He died January 18, 1968. She later married Nathan K. Nelson April 15, 1978. He died March 29, 1986.Doris worked as a homemaker raising her family for many years. During the time of raising her sons, she served as a Cub Scout pack leader. She supported the Boy Scouts of America for many years. She also owned and operated rental property in Junction City. At one time, she worked at Irwin Army Community Hospital in the Mental Health Department. Doris was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Ladies Reading Club, the Geary County Landlord Association and the Junction City Lady Troopers. She also did volunteer work at the C.L. Hoover Opera House.&nbsp; Doris was very patriotic and enjoyed celebrating the Fourth of July. She also enjoyed the Christmas season. She was known as a big supporter of Junction City and Fort Riley.

 Survivors include three sons, Steven MacLaird of Quinlan, Texas, Phillip MacLaird of Mission, Texas and Perry MacLaird of Conway, Arkansas; one brother, Robert Warren; one sister, Helen Spinler; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Kenneth A. MacLaird and Nathan K. Nelson; one son, Patrick D. MacLaird.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sylvia came into this world on May 13th, 1959, in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, as the beloved daughter of Jimmie and Alice (Schlesner) Todd. Sylvia's greatest joy in life was found in the warm embrace of her family and the thrill of watching her sons compete in races. She will be forever etched in our hearts for the boundless love and kindness she extended to everyone she met, always with open arms and a joyful spirit that brightened every conversation.

Sylvia is survived by her significant other, Joseph Thompson, and her cherished children, Celina (Joe) Soliz, Michael (Alyssa) Niemczyk, Heather Stewart, Steven (Alana) Thompson, Nicholas (Skye) Thompson, and Jacob Thompson. She is also survived by her 19 adoring grandchildren, with one on the way, as well as 5 great-grandchildren. Sylvia's sisters, Sheree (Martin) Hemmingway of Junction City, Kansas, and Sheila Miller of Abilene, Kansas, hold her dear in their hearts.Sylvia is now reunited with her grandson, Jeremiah Thompson, and her brother, Malcom Todd of Junction City, in eternal peace. She joins her parents, Jimmie and Alice, and her grandparents, Paul and Ida Schlesner of Herington, Kansas, and James and Carrie Todd of Cullman, Alabama, in the heavenly embrace.

Sylvia Leona Niemczyk

Ina Ellis, age 91, of Manhattan, Kansas, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. She was born in Fairview Missouri to Carl and Violet Mae (Hutchings) Sanders. In 1949 she graduated from the Apostolic Faith Bible School in Baxter Springs, Kansas, and on May 7, 1950 she married her high school sweet heart, Joe Ellis, who preceded her in death in 2015.

Ina sold Tupperware for five years, while living in western Kansas, and spent a number of years working at Memorial Hospital in Manhattan in the Housekeeping and Linen Department. She also, along with her husband Joe, managed the Little Ponderosa Mobile Home Park for 28 years. She loved to travel to see her relatives in Wyoming and Missouri. But her favorite role in life was that of wife, mom, and grandma. Her family was a great source of joy for her. Her six children and their families spent a lot of time in her home over the years; enjoying Sunday dinners, holiday gatherings, and visits just because. Her hospitality and warm smile and hugs made all feel welcome.

Ina had a heart of compassion and generosity toward all who knew her. Her strong faith in the Lord and her unwavering trust in His provision for her life was evident by the way she cared for others. Whether it was through the food she made or providing financial help, if she could meet someone else’s need- she loved to help.

Ina was a longtime member of the Manhattan First Church of the Nazarene where she attended with her husband Joe, and her son Lynn Ellis and his family. She made life long friends at church and was part of many different Bible studies and ministries over the years. She would often tell others how good the Lord had been to her and her family.

She is survived by four sons, Bob Ellis (Janie) of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Darreld Ellis (Marilyn) of Topeka, Kansas, Terry Ellis (Polly) of Overland Park, Kansas, Rick Ellis (Shelle) of Shawnee, Kansas; one daughter, Sherry Duerfeldt (Dan) of Manhattan, Kansas; two sisters, Sharon Dooley of Casper Wyoming, and Brenda Sue Davis of Gillette, Wyoming; two brothers, Leon Sanders and Bob Sanders, both of Casper Wyoming; 12 grandchildren, Chad Ellis, Brian Ellis, Josh Duerfeldt, Jessica Ellis Vidal, Nicole Ellis Semple, Dayna Ellis Robson, Matt Duerfeldt, Pam Ellis, Luke Duerfeldt, Andrew Ellis, Jacob Duerfeldt and Michael Ellis; 18 great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; one step great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Ina was preceded in death by her son Lynn Ellis and his wife Mary Lou, along with three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Manhattan, Kansas, with Pastor Jay Bessmer officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday morning at the church. Burial will be in the Sedalia Cemetery, northwest of Manhattan.

A memorial has been established for the First Church of the Nazarene. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, Kansas.

Richard D. Lewis, age 57, of Topeka, died September 22, 2023, at Stormont-Vail Health in Topeka.

He was born September 28, 1965, in Manhattan, the son of Donald Luther and Della Mae (Davis) Lewis.

Richard graduated from Manhattan High School and then earned his Associate Degree from Beloit Vo-Tech in diesel mechanics.

He worked for Injection and Turbo as a diesel injection repair technician.

Richard was a gamer, built his own computers, was a member of an online band, enjoyed reading westerns and spy novels, and watched car shows on TV.

Survivors include his sister-in-law Shirley Lewis of Wamego, KS, and his nephew John Lewis and his wife Krystal of Coldwater, KS.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings: Russell Lewis, Allen Lewis and Sally Lewis.

Cremation is planned with graveside services to be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 13th at the Riley Cemetery, Riley, Kansas.

Kenneth Wayne Carroll, age 69, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at his home in Ogden, KS.&nbsp;

He was born on November 24, 1953, in LaFollette, Tennessee, and was the son of Walter and Myrtle (Benge) Carroll.

On December 31, 1976, he married Jutta (Wagner) Carroll in Heilbronn, Germany. Kenneth was a retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant who served in Operation Desert Storm. He was the prior Commander of the VFW, Post 11374 located in Ogden, KS.

Survivors include his wife, Jutta, Ogden, KS; sons, Patrick W. Carroll (Shelby), Tulsa, OK, Mark S. Carroll (Jennifer), Manhattan, KS; Step-Grandchildren Mary and Jeremy Romig.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by both parents and seven siblings.&nbsp;

Graveside inurnment with military funeral honors will occur on 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 13, 2023, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS.

Kenneth Wayne Carroll

Linda Jean Mowery-Denning, 74, of Salina, KS, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023.

Linda was born April 8, 1949, in Kansas City, MO. She was raised by her parents, Ralph S. Mowery and Veora Mowery in Bluffton, Indiana. She married Peter Alan Denning of Salina on September 4, 1982.

Linda graduated from Ball State University and eventually made her way to Salina in the 1970s where she began her journalism career with the Salina Journal. She was with the Salina Journal for 26 years before she left to begin the Ellsworth County Independent, now the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. She semi-retired in 2022, but she continued to write and report for the newspaper as well as her start-up magazine, The Magazine, a publication focused on Saline County and Northcentral Kansas.
