Richard Bull, 81 died September 23, 2023, in Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;He was born on November 28, 1941, in Clay Center, the son of Maynard and Irene (Hatfield) Bull. &nbsp;Richard was raised near the Oak Hill community. &nbsp;He was a Class of 1959 graduate from Miltonvale High School. &nbsp;Richard married Mary Jo Mattingly on June 22, 1963. &nbsp;They made their home in the Clay Center community. &nbsp;Richard worked for Rhea Construction, was self-employed for 26 years and worked for Mel’s Pump and Plumbing operating a backhoe and opening gravesites. &nbsp;He dug graves in 101 different cemeteries. &nbsp;Richard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served in the Army National Guard. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Bull.

Jesusa (Susie) O. Reyes, age 95, of Manhattan, passed away Monday September 25, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her family and friends.

Susie was born in San Antonio, Texas, where she will return for her interment.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane O. Doehling (John); her grandchildren, Ryan Doehling (Rebecca) and Shelbi Doehling Opirhory (Dan); and also, her great-grandchildren, Evelyn Doehling, Elliott Doehling, and Sasha Opirhory, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Edeltraud T McCabe age 87, of Manhattan, Kansas, was welcomed into the arms of her Shepherd on September 23, 2023, with the love of her family surrounding her. Edeltraud was born in Moers Germany on January 22, 1936, to Georg and Karoline (Springfeld) Augsburger. Throughout her life Edeltraud served as a symbol of devotion, strength, and unity to her family. She maintained an immaculate home that was always welcoming and one that no one ever left hungry.

Edeltraud loved to share pictures and stories about her hometown of Neckarsteinach and life as a child living on a ship traveling the waterways of Germany.

She loved God and sharing His word and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

On January 22, 1955 she married her first husband Fritz Thieme. He preceded her in death. The couple welcomed five children to this union.

On October 6, 1965 in Pirmasens, Germany, as a widow, she married Milton E. McCabe and had two children. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include Anette (Thieme) McClellan of Manhattan, KS, Michael Thieme and wife Ulli of Schifferstadt, Germany, Friederike (Thieme) Vay and her husband Knut of Frankenthal, Germany, and Scarlett (McCabe) Donnert and husband Dave of Manhattan, KS; ten grandchildren Michelle (McClellan) Austin and husband Jon of Bolivar, MO, Markus McClellan and wife Nicole of Bolivar, MO, Benjamin Thieme of Schifferstadt, Germany, Daniel Vay, Tobias Vay and Simon Vay of Frankenthal Germany, Jen McCabe of Tampa, FL, Taylor Donnert of Franklin Indiana, Ryan Donnert of Manhattan, KS, Sarah (Cleer) Blakeley of Havana, IL and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings Horst Augsburger, Renate Kappes, Kurt Augsburger, Roswitha Kuebler, Margot Oster, Karl Augsburger, and Annemarie Rossmueller all residing in Germany.

Paul Heine, 76, of Belvue, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (September 13, 2023).

Born May 16, 1947 in Wamego, Kansas, Paul was the son of Henry Herman and Lydia Emma (Martens) Heine.

Paul loved being outdoors working and tinkering around the family farm. &nbsp;He had also worked at Goodyear in Topeka, School District 321 in St. Marys and at Custom Woods in St. Marys.

Survivors include two children, Greg Heine (Melissa) of Bel Aire, KS and Ramona Rafferty of Topeka, KS; two grandchildren, Cassandra Heine and Keenan Heine; a brother, Wilford Heine of Topeka, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ruth Roberson.

The family will meet with friends at a memorial visitation on Friday evening (November 10, 2023) from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

Private inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Belvue, KS.

Francis A. Vering, age 90, of Marysville, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

Francis was born on August 9, 1933, in Marysville.&nbsp; He is the son of Antone A. and Mary A. (Wassenberg) Vering.&nbsp; He graduated from Marysville High School in 1950, and then served in the Kansas Army National Guard while farming.&nbsp; Francis married Constance “Connie” Claeys on August 19, 1967, at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Marysville.

As a young boy, Francis was highly involved in helping his mother and siblings with farm work and demonstrated a hard work ethic throughout his lifetime.&nbsp; He loved his family, farming, and working with a variety of animals.&nbsp;

He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Marysville.&nbsp; He had been a member of the American Legion for many of years.

Survivors include his wife Connie, his four children: Denise Liebetrau of Lakewood, Colorado, Alan (Heather) Vering of Waverly, Iowa, Steve Vering of Marysville, and Susan (Matt) Lord of Lawrence, two sisters: Cynthia Schuppert of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Kathleen Colross of York, Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren and a sister-in-law Carol Vering of Manhattan.

Preceding Francis in death were his parents, a brother Ferdinand “Buster” Vering, a sister Loretta Smith, and a son-in-law Keith Liebetrau.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Marysville celebrated by Father Quentin Schmitz.&nbsp; Honorary Bearers are Peter Vering, Katie Vering, Emily Vering, Ava Liebetrau, Ben Liebetrau, Jonas Lord and Estelle Lord. Francis A. Vering

Charles William Frank Havlicek (Chuck), age 74 of Manhattan, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Chuck was born on August 11, 1949 in Pawnee City, NE, the son of Charles Frank and Maxine Helen (Jacoby) Havlicek. He grew up DuBois, NE, attending grade school in DuBois and graduating from Pawnee City High School in 1967. From there, he went on to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (“UNL”), where he was an active member of the AgMen Fraternity and developed his love for travel with a trip to Nepal through the IFYE exchange program. Chuck graduated in 1972 with Honors and a BS in Agriculture and Agronomy followed by a Master’s degree in Adult and Continuing Education in 1977.&nbsp;

&nbsp;After graduation, Chuck worked as a Program Coordinator in the Division of Continuing Education at UNL until he and Barb made the decision to move their family to Manhattan, KS in 1985 for Chuck’s new job as the Assistant Director of Conferences in the Division of Continuing Education at Kansas State University. During this time at K-State, Chuck observed the need for more efficient and comprehensive registration software and began working on developing his own program. In 1988, this led to the creation of ACEware Systems, Inc. and Chuck’s ultimate departure from the University to run ACEware full time. He spent the remainder of his career as owner and CEO of the company until retiring in 2023.

Chuck was married to Barbara Jean Ostergard on May 26, 1973 and they were blessed with two daughters, Becci and Christina.

&nbsp;Chuck loved everything about life, he loved his family, and he loved his church! He was an active member of the Manhattan community as a member of the College Avenue United Methodist Church where he served in many leadership roles and capacities. He also volunteered as a 4-H Community Leader for a number of years, building on his lifelong love of 4-H as a youth and young adult. Additionally, Chuck served on numerous advisory committees for the Manhattan School District and as Co-Chair with Barbara for the Manhattan High School Booster Club.

Even with all of his community involvement, family was always Chuck’s first priority and his children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved to travel, especially with his family, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and most anything outdoors. He was a master woodworker, completing countless special projects for friends, his children and grandchildren.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughter Becci Woods (Seth) of Apex, NC and his daughter, Christina Denton (Greg) of Houston, TX , five grandchildren, Zach Golonka, Ty Golonka, Harper Woods, Henry Denton, and Vivian Denton. Brothers Andy Havlicek (Sue) of McCook, NE and Jon Havlicek (Donna) of Mertztown, PA and many nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maxine Havlicek.

Cremation is planned with a memorial service to be held at the College Avenue Methodist Church in Manhattan, KS on November 10, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. The family will greet friends at a visitation from 12:30-1:30 p.m at the church prior to the service.

Charles William Frank Havlicek (Chuck)

James Alan Ediger was welcomed into God's loving arms and to his heavenly home on September 20, 2023. &nbsp;Jim passed away at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, after a valiant two year battle with multiple myeloma.

James (Jim) was born on New Year's Day to Frank N. Ediger and Esther M. (Frantz) Ediger on January 1, 1947, in Salem General Hospital in Salem, Oregon. &nbsp;He attended Hoover Grade School in Salem, Salem Academy Jr. High and High School, graduating in 1965 . &nbsp;During his high school years, Jim was a member of the Athletic Varsity Club and participated in football, baseball, basketball, and earned athletic letters in football and baseball. &nbsp;He was also voted "most friendly" during his senior year. &nbsp;

Following high school graduation, Jim worked alongside his father for one year building and installing cabinets in new homes in Salem, Oregon. &nbsp;He then spent two years in Laurel, Maryland, volunteering in the recreation department at the Children's Center for the Mennonite Central Committee. &nbsp;

While completing his alternate service in Maryland, Jim met his future wife, Joyce Matthew (Jodi) from Salina, Kansas, &nbsp;who was also serving as a volunteer for the Mennonite Central Committee.

&nbsp;Jim and Jodi were married on August 17, 1968 by Jodi's father, Rev. Glenn Matthew, at Leon United Methodist Church in Leon, Kansas. &nbsp;They were later divorced in 1998.&nbsp;

&nbsp;From 1968 to 1972, Jim attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas, graduating in 1972 with an Elementary Education degree. &nbsp;Jim and his family moved to Harveyville, Kansas, where Jim began his classroom teaching career, spanning 30 years, all in the Wabaunsee East USD #330 school district, educating third and fifth graders. During his years of teaching in the district, Jim served as the building representative, association treasurer, and associate president of Wabaunsee East Teachers Association (WETA). He also served on the negotiating committee as well as serving as chief negotiator for WETA. &nbsp;Jim was a member of the Wabaunsee East Teachers Association (WETA), Kansas National Education Association (KNEA), and the National Education Association (NEA). Jim retired from full-time classroom teaching in 2002. &nbsp;Following his retirement from teaching, he worked in Topeka for Commerce Bank and Trust in the mail facility and was recognized with the "Above and Beyond" award given annually by the bank where he was employed until 2005.&nbsp;

In 2005, Jim married Connie (Farrell) Gerstenkorn at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and moved from Topeka to Olathe, Kansas. Following his move to Olathe, he was employed by the Olathe School District as a Job Coach at the Olathe Advanced Technical Center for 12 years before retiring for a second time in 2018. &nbsp;

&nbsp;Jim was an avid KU Jayhawks basketball fan and a Kansas City Chiefs football fan, rarely missing a TV game when either team played. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time attending his grandchildren's sporting events, traveling, visiting his out-of-state siblings, and attending Southern Gospel music concerts throughout several states, especially following his favorite group, the Blackwood Brothers Quartet.&nbsp;

Preceding Jim in death were his father (1988), his mother (2009), and a brother, Norm Ediger (2020). &nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife, Connie Ediger, Gardner, Kansas; his children, Christopher Ediger, Overland Park, Kansas; Lisa (Jimmy) Norman, Topeka, Kansas; step-daughter, Lisa Gerstenkorn (Brian O'Neill), Fort Wayne, Indiana; and step-son, Dan Gerstenkorn (Mary Beth Medford), Shawnee, Kansas; his brother, Howard Ediger (Marge), Bend, Oregon; sister, Judy Sieh (Larry), Morrison, Illinois; sister-in-law, Marty Ediger, Everett, Washington; and his precious grandchildren: Brianna and Jayden Norman, Morgan Ediger, Annabelle and Oliver Gerstenkorn.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon (October 2, 2023) at 1:00 P.M.&nbsp; at Mt. Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends on Monday (October 2, 2023) from 12:00 P.M. until the time of services at Mt. Hope Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in Jim's name to Southern Gospel Music Association (SGMA) and to Habitat for Humanity and may be left with Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home, P. O. Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.

 </figure>James Alan Ediger was welcomed into God's loving arms and to his heavenly home on September 20, 2023. &nbsp;Jim passed away at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, after a valiant two year battle with multiple myeloma.James (Jim) was born on New Year's Day to Frank N. Ediger and Esther M. (Frantz) Ediger on January 1, 1947, in Salem General Hospital in Salem, Oregon. &nbsp;He attended Hoover Grade School in Salem, Salem Academy Jr. High and High School, graduating in 1965 . &nbsp;During his high school years, Jim was a member of the Athletic Varsity Club and participated in football, baseball, basketball, and earned athletic letters in football and baseball. &nbsp;He was also voted "most friendly" during his senior year. &nbsp;Following high school graduation, Jim worked alongside his father for one year building and installing cabinets in new homes in Salem, Oregon. &nbsp;He then spent two years in Laurel, Maryland, volunteering in the recreation department at the Children's Center for the Mennonite Central Committee. &nbsp;While completing his alternate service in Maryland, Jim met his future wife, Joyce Matthew (Jodi) from Salina, Kansas, &nbsp;who was also serving as a volunteer for the Mennonite Central Committee.&nbsp;Jim and Jodi were married on August 17, 1968 by Jodi's father, Rev. Ruth Mary Lagerman of Junction City, Kansas has passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, with family in California.

Ruth was born on June 18, 1944, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harold and Wanda (Stachowski) Gassenhuber. After graduating from Oak Creek High School, she married Francis Lagerman in 1963, becoming a patriotic military wife.&nbsp; She resided with her family in Junction City for 50 years and had a career at Woolworth Distribution Center. Douglas Dale Kruse (70 years old) entered into eternal rest at the conclusion of his favorite song on September 15th, 2023. He was at home, while surrounded by his family &amp; loving comfort.

He was born December 3, 1952, to Jurgen and Florence (Rodick) Kruse. He was baptized &amp; confirmed at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Barnes, KS. In 1970, he graduated from Linn Rural High School as the Salutatorian of his class. Doug was known for being ornery and often found to be guilty of having a good time. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1974, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering. It was also 1974, when he married the girl of his dreams and his now wife of 49 years, Monica Hogan. They raised two sons, Landon and Kellen.

Doug was born to weld &amp; started mastering his craft when his dad let him build a custom mailbox for their family in 5th&nbsp;grade. That mailbox is still in use, as are most things Doug built throughout his life. He owned &amp; operated Custom Welding &amp; Supply in Barnes, KS for twenty years while he and Monica raised their family. He loved the challenges brought through the driveway of his shop in Barnes from the farming community that supported his business. He had an unbelievable knack for solving problems &amp; doing so with his welding helmet on. He worked hard &amp; deeply valued the relationships with those he saw as family in the Barnes community. It was during this time that he loved mentoring the developing minds of his ballplayers in coach pitch &amp; pee wee baseball, coaching for nine years. He coached players from Greenleaf, Barnes, Linn and Washington, helping them to do their best. Come game time, he always had a rule book in his back pocket and loved encouraging kids to visualize their success on the field. He cared about each &amp; every player &amp; coach he worked with &amp; loved winning a championship with them.

He next worked for Linn Enterprises as an engineer for seven years &amp; greatly enjoyed his time spent there in Linn. He later retired from Hutchinson-Mayrath in 2020, after working over 15 years as a Senior Engineer in Research &amp; Development, in Clay Center. He loved designing equipment for both of these companies and appreciated the trust &amp; creative license given him to fabricate and improve upon function for everything from a cattle chute to commercial grain moving equipment.

Doug loved deer hunting, dove hunting, fishing &amp; just being out in the great outdoors. He patiently shared this passion with his boys and close friends. He enjoyed all time spent on his farms. He loved caring for his cows and rose to the challenge of each haying season, with expertise in keeping his unconventional equipment rolling like a well-oiled machine. Doug was one of a kind. He wasn’t always the easiest to approach, but those who rose to the challenge found a curious, good-hearted man with a quick wit and fun sense of humor. He believed you should have a reason for everything you do and lived his life by this mantra. He had deep faith in God and the sacrifice that Jesus made for all of humanity. His opinions were not easily swayed, but he welcomed debate on any topic he found of interest. He never shied away from a challenge and had the ability to fix anything he had time enough to study out. He enjoyed harmony in music and in general. He found balance in life &amp; took the time to appreciate it. He loved fiercely and allowed no short cuts when it came to learning the life lessons he valued. He thoroughly enjoyed a cold beer under his favorite shade tree in the “circle of trust” with his wife, &amp; his boys if they happened to be in Palmer. Doug was a loving husband, mentor &amp; the best dad. He will be truly missed.

Raymond Frances Power, 96, of Abilene, passed away on September 16, 2023, after a long, loving life.

Ray was born on July 26, 1927, in Guthrie, Oklahoma. After graduating from Guthrie High School, Ray enlisted in the US Army and spent a short time training as a paratrooper. After his military service, Ray married his high school sweetheart, Theda McCoy, in 1948 and settled in Guthrie. Ray and Theda welcomed three children: Sheridan Power, Susie Edberg (Dwight) and Ted Power (Leslie). They were married 57 years at the time of Theda’s passing in March 2006.In 1968, the Powers moved to Abilene, Kansas, where Ray worked in agriculture sales. At the age of 62, Ray found his calling in driving the school bus for the Abilene School District. He spent two decades building relationships with each child who rode his bus. It was Ray’s joy to know each rider by name and to watch from behind the steering wheel as they grew up. 

An avid sports fan all his life, he especially loved driving Abilene sports teams to and from their activities. He was always cheering on the athletes, not just in their sports but in life. Ray came to Christ through Alcoholics Anonymous in 1971 and actively supported many others seeking sobriety. He loved the Lord and was an active member of the Abilene United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing golf and watching professional sports, especially baseball. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His gentle style of friendship and encouragement was known to so many.

Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Theda, his parents, and three sisters. He is survived by his three children and four grandchildren—Steven Hall (Stacy), Lauren (Power) Denorfia (Chris), Edie (Hall) Ross (Seth) and Chandler Power (Mara Clippinger). He’s also survived by seven great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 3, at the Abilene United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the USD 435 Endowment Association. Donations made in Ray Power’s name will be used for K-12 bus trips. Donations also can be made to the Abilene United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Raymond Frances Power

After a long and courageous battle with cancer Mary Corah passed away at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City on September 18,2023. Mary was born in Grafton, North Dakota on September 29, 1944 to Ed and Marie (Mamie) Gudajtes. …. the second of their four children.

After graduating from Minto High School Mary attended North Dakota State University before entering a long career in the world of finance……. retiring after spending many years as the manager of the Kansas Farm Bureau Credit Union….and yes, she never could figure out why some people could not balance a checking account.

On October 24th, 1964 she married Larry Corah at the St Stanislaus Catholic church in Warsaw, North Dakota. Mary became very adept at moving as in their first 9 years of married life she lived in 12 different houses/apartments in 6 different states and two different countries…. never once asking the obvious question “why are we doing this” because she recognized these were valued career moves for Larry. …. finally in 1974 they settled in their long-time home in Manhattan, Kansas.

Mary had many interests……she never passed a quilt shop without stopping which resulted in 100’s of beautiful quilts either given to family or charity…. there never seemed to be a quilt organization or quilt retreat that didn’t attract her interest. Early in married she was an active bowler and frequently joined Welcome Wagon when a move brought her to a new town.

Doing volunteer work was important part of her life……for many years she worked weekly at the Seven Dolors Catholic Budget Shop, was active in numerous church organizations as she and Larry were long time members of the St Thomas More Catholic Church…..she served many years on the school board for the Manhattan Catholic school……and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention she never found a bridge game of cards not worthy of playing ……frequently spending many an afternoon during retirement years…..she also enjoyed a good K-State football game or a KSU Women’s basketball game.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother James, sisters-in-law Kathy and Susan Gudajtes, brother-in-law Paul Gourde and grandson Jack Estes.

Survivors include her husband Larry of nearly 59 years, four children daughter Michelle (Derek) Estes, Tom (Sally), Chad (Becca) and Mark……six grandchildren Luke. Morgan, Kaden, Madison, Tucker and Payton (Ward). She is also survived by sister Marge Gourde and brother John Gudajtes and numerous nieces and nephews.

The evening wake(visitation) will be held at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan on Sunday evening October 8th from 5:30-7 p.m.&nbsp; with a rosary and a short celebration of life starting at 7 p.m.. Funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. on October 9th at the St Thomas More Catholic Church, 2900 Kimball Avenue in Manhattan.

Mary was born in Grafton, North Dakota on September 29, 1944 to Ed and Marie (Mamie) Gudajtes. …. the second of their four children.After graduating from Minto High School Mary attended North Dakota State University before entering a long career in the world of finance……. retiring after spending many years as the manager of the Kansas Farm Bureau Credit Union….and yes, she never could figure out why some people could not balance a checking account.On October 24th, 1964 she married Larry Corah at the St Stanislaus Catholic church in Warsaw, North Dakota. Donald John Bennett, 88, of Wamego, Kansas, died Monday, September 18, 2023, at his home. &nbsp;He was a life-long resident of the community.

Don was born May 22, 1935, in Flush, Kansas, the son of Maurice and Rosella (Lauer) Bennett. &nbsp;He attended local grade school and graduated in 1953 from Wamego High School.

Don worked fifty-one years for Wamego Floral. &nbsp;He helped raise and deliver bedding plants and flowers all over the country. He loved raising mums and poinsettias. &nbsp;He then worked for several years for 5-H Green House and then True Value Hardware. &nbsp;Don was very handy and was able to fix almost anything. &nbsp;While working for the hardware store, he was often sought out by customers not only because he knew where to find whatever they were looking for, but also because of his knowledge of how things worked.&nbsp;

Don loved to bowl and won many tournaments. &nbsp;He also loved to raise his garden and enjoyed the fruits of his labors. &nbsp;He was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and over the years served as an usher, lector, and server. &nbsp;He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

On May 11, 1957, in Wamego, Don married Ann Boyd. &nbsp;They shared over 66 years together and she now survives at their home.

Don is also survived by his children; Omar Bennett (Margarita Bautista), Topeka, Dianne Hall, Wamego, and Rob Bennett (Dawn Nogosek), Garden City; his grandchildren, Natalie Bennett, Chelsey Ellis, Andrew Bennett, Jacque Hastert, Tim Hall, Jr., Nathaniel Hall, Anthony Bennett, Redawn Bennett, Latisha Bennett, and Darlene Bennett; his great-grandchildren, Adler, Fiona, Olivia, Lily, Jerome and Violet. &nbsp; Don was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Emma Hastert, son-in-law, Timothy Hall, and his siblings, Joretta Varnadore, Wayne Bennett and Rita Dornbusch.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in Wamego. &nbsp;Father Mike Peterson will be officiating. &nbsp;The family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home. &nbsp;They suggest memorial contributions to either the American Cancer Association or the Alzheimer’s Association, and those may be sent in care of the funeral home. &nbsp;

Jonna Kaye Nichols, age 79, of St. George died September 13, 2023, at her home in St. George.

Jonna was born on September 6, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of John and Thelma Dawson.

Jonna was a Kansas native and graduated from East High School in Wichita, Kansas. After high school, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from WSU as a registered nurse. Jonna worked as a registered nurse in the oncology department for twelve years at St. Francis Medical Center. Concluding her career in oncology, she dedicated her time to home health care. Jonna traveled to provide exceptional healthcare to her patients all over the State of Kansas for fifteen years.

She enjoyed boating and fishing, spending many hours on Milford Lake with her son Christopher and his wife Rebecca. Most of all she loved her family and her grandchildren Connor, and Jonathan. She had a special place in her heart for her cats, she was a lover of animals, but especially horses. &nbsp;Jonna was compassionate and caring, dedicated, and always spoke her mind.

She is survived by her son, Christopher (Rebecca) Nichols, and her grandsons, Connor Nichols, and Jonathan Nichols.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Thema, and one older sister.

Robert Monroe Phillips, 99, of Manhattan, died on September 17, 2023, at Meadowlark.

He was born June 3, 1924, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the youngest of five children of Herbert William and Adeline May (Dicken) Phillips. When he was an infant, his family moved to Elk County, KS after his father was disabled from a work injury. They later moved to Wichita where he graduated from East High School in 1942. He served in Europe in the Army Air Force during World War Il, and was honorably discharged.

He married Opal Korean Brown in Wichita on April 7, 1946. They moved to Manhattan later that year and he graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1951. He began his veterinary career in Fergus Falls, MN, moving, in 1953, to Oberlin, KS where he started a predominantly large animal practice. In 1969 he entered graduate school at the University of Georgia where he earned a Ph.D. In medical microbiology in 1972. After 3 years at Jensen-Salsbery Laboratories in Kansas City he accepted a virology position in the diagnostic laboratory at the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine where he remained until his retirement in 1994.

As a man of faith, Bob was active in his church and community, and considered it a joy to serve others. He was also an avid golfer well into his 90’s and enjoyed playing with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his 4 siblings, and his son Jeff. He is survived by his wife, children Tom (Jenny) Phillips of Seattle, WA, Mary (Rod) Vestal of Sherwood, AR, Paul (Beth) Phillips of Woodland Park, CO, 6 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Manhattan, Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 10:00 am until the memorial services at 11:00 with Pastor Chris Geyer officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan, KS.

Robert Monroe  Phillips, DVM

Arlys M. Zoellner, 90, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

Arlys Mae Zoellner was born on December 7, 1932, to Ruben Ludvig and Jennie Elida (Ness) Johnson in Britton, SD. She grew up on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church in rural Claremont. Arlys attended a one-room school in Riverside Township and graduated from Groton High School. Arlys attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education.

She taught Biology, English, and Business at Clark High School in Clark, SD, Madison High School in Madison, MN, and Hickman High School in Columbia, MO. On December 30, 1958, Arlys married Keith Owen Zoellner, Ph.D., in Groton, SD. After teaching, she served as a campus ministries coordinator at Stephens College, Columbia, MO, and later at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. Upon the birth of her daughter, she was a stay-at-home Mom, and then later returned to work at the Office of the Registrar at Kansas State University.

At Kansas State University, Arlys was active in the Department of Animal Science and Industry and as a leader in the Social Club. At First Lutheran Church, she and her husband led youth group, led Vacation Bible School, served as Church Librarian, and was an active member of Lydia Circle. She was active in 4-H through the Cico Shamrocks Club and in American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural Programs, including hosting a cherished AFS daughter, Sue Buell, from Sri Lanka for a year. Arlys loved people and the beauty of God's creation including flowers, gardening, and the national parks; she thought Paradise at Mount Rainier was appropriately named.

As a young girl in rural South Dakota, she never dreamed she would see the world. She loved meeting new people, seeing how they lived, and trying their favorite foods. She thoroughly agreed with Mark Twain that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness. Arlys saw 24 different countries, especially loving Argentina's Iguazu Falls and the unearthly landscape of Turkey's Cappadocia region. Most of all she loved spending time and creating memories with her nieces, Jenny and Jackie Johnson, and her daughter, Lori.

She will be remembered as a kind and loving person, who walked humbly with her God.

Arlys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Keith, and two brothers, Merton and Gary Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Zoellner, Ph.D., of Seattle, WA, brother, Lyle, and sister-in-law, Mary Johnson, of Pearland, TX, sister-in-law, Ella Johnson, of Groton, SD, Sue Buell, Ajax, Canada, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, in the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Haverlah officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery. The family of Arlys Zoellner will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Linda L. (Schmidt) Morton, 74, of Abilene, KS passed away September 17, 2023, at Abilene Memorial Hospital. 

She was born on February 19, 1949, Fairbury, NE to William and Betty (Liesenfeld) Schmidt.Linda was a graduate of Abilene High School, class of 1967. In 1990 she received an associate degree in accounting at Park's Business College, Denver, CO. She worked for Ryerson Steel for many years and moved back to Abilene to be closer to her dad. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church.Over the years Linda enjoyed staying physically fit, bicycling, walking, and playing softball. She even experienced skydiving, and scuba diving. She loved photography, scrap booking, and endless hours of Sodoku. Linda loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and was so proud of them all. Linda was known as the Teddy Bear Grandma! She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

 She was married to Ralph Morton, he survives. ther survivors include her Daughter, Sabrina Holland of Abilene, KS; Three Sons, Matthew J. Anguiano of Fort Lupton, CO, Justin M. (Kristine) Anguiano of Elkhorn, NE, Sean A. She was born on February 19, 1949, Fairbury, NE to William and Betty (Liesenfeld) Schmidt.Linda was a graduate of Abilene High School, class of 1967. In 1990 she received an associate degree in accounting at Park's Business College, Denver, CO. She worked for Ryerson Steel for many years and moved back to Abilene to be closer to her dad. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church.Over the years Linda enjoyed staying physically fit, bicycling, walking, and playing softball. She even experienced skydiving, and scuba diving. She loved photography, scrap booking, and endless hours of Sodoku. Linda loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and was so proud of them all. Linda was known as the Teddy Bear Grandma! She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Mark Wayne Floberg, 69, of Junction City, passed away on September 19, 2023, peacefully at home. A visitation will take place at the Johnson Funeral Home on Monday September 25, 2023, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The service will take place Tuesday, September 26, 2023, 10:00 a.m. Cremation will follow and he will be brought back home with his family.

Mark was born on January 20, 1954, to Mardell and Dorothy Floberg, Fargo, North Dakota. Growing up, baseball was his sport. He played throughout junior high, high school, and even continued into his adult years by playing on leagues in Junction City. Besides playing the sport, he also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren take up the passion. He always loved his family over anything else. He showed this by including his family into his hobbies such as drag racing, hunting, and sports. He was a mentor, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife, Arlene; one son, Justin of Milford, Kansas; two daughters, Jennifer (Terrance) of Burleson, Texas and Elizabeth of Junction City, Kansas; one step-daughter, Vanessa (Kyle) of Westmoreland, Kansas; two brothers, Mardy of Milford, Kansas and Mike of Berryton , Kansas; one sister, Debi of Houston, Texas; ten grandchildren, Alexis, Alyssa, Brooke, Jayden, Jonathan, Arianna, Savannah, Lydia, Landyn, Libby and a gaggle of other family and friends. Terry Gene Graff, passed away at 10:40 a.m., Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Lyons Medical Center.

 Terry was born to Frederick and Alta Graff on July 17, 1954, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. He graduated from Central High School in Camp Point, Illinois in 1973. Terry entered military service in the United States Army on August 22, 1977 as a 19E armor crewman. He served six years and five months before being honorably discharged due to medical reasons. He obtained the rank of Staff Sargeant (E-6). After leaving military service, Terry entered employment with The Department of The Army as a civilian, where he retired after thirty years of service. 

Terry enjoyed family cookouts, where he always had two helpings and then would remark the food tasted like, we will just say ‘sub-standard’. He also enjoyed horseback riding, working with the Junction City Rodeo Association, and being outdoors. He would always help family and friends whenever he could.

 Terry is survived by his wife, Shannon Lynn Graff and his son, Cody Allen Graff of Geneseo, KS; daughter, Melinda Sue Graff of Junction City, KS; three brothers, Roger Graff and wife Barbara, Dennis Graff and wife Karen, and Melvin Graff all of Illinois; sister Betty Utterback and husband Gene of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. Terry is preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents.

 A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends. Memorials may be given to the Terry Graff Memorial Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, 214 West Avenue South, Lyons, KS 67554.

Doneva Joy Sparks, 83, of Junction City, Kansas died on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman, Kansas. Cremation will take place. A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2023 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Kerry Ninemire officiating. A visitation will take place 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.

Doneva was born July 17, 1940, the daughter of Lawrence Donaldson and Alpha Lenore (Harmon) Prescott.On a summer day, June 2, 1958, in a wheat field, near Alva, Oklahoma, she married Nate Sparks. The wedding was to take place in the town of Alva, Oklahoma. However, the wedding couldn't take place in Alva because the marriage license was issued in the neighboring county. So, everyone got in their vehicles and drove to the county line where the ceremony took place in a beautiful wheat field.

Doneva graduated from Larned High School with the class of 1958. After high school and getting married, she held various jobs that included working for Bell Telephone and Montgomery Wards. She spent many years raising a family and being the domestic engineer for the Sparks household. Doneva later entered the workforce and worked as a Civil Servant at Fort Riley, selling insurance for Blue Cross and Blue Shield, serving as the administrative assistant for St. Xavier Catholic Church and a support staff employee at Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home. Over the years living and working in Junction City, Kansas she belonged to St. Xavier Catholic Church, sang with the Troubadours and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She also enjoyed spending time with Nate participating in the Single Action Shooting Society known as "Sand Hill Plum".&nbsp; Doneva enjoyed spending time with her family. She liked getting together with her entire family and loving on all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was her life!

Maurine was born, Beatrice Maurine Jenkins, on January 23, 1945, in Parsons, Kansas. She was the first of five children of William Grant and Nellie Genevieve (Whetzel) Jenkins.She married the love of her life, Raymond, on June 29, 1968, in Marshfield, Missouri. Together they moved to Wakefield, Kansas and settled in Junction City, Kansas to raise their three children. Her life was busy working for The Kansas City Star newspaper, as a carrier. Every summer she worked in her extensive vegetable garden and canning. She enjoyed teaching her kids to ride the family horse, as she had much experience with horses when she was growing up.After retiring, she was blessed with two loving granddaughters. They filled her days with constant fun and play.Maurine enjoyed arranging large family holiday meals and parties. She brought everyone together with her delicious cooking.

Survivors include her husband Raymond of Junction City, Kansas; two daughters, Charlette Whitley of Edmond, Oklahoma and Brenda Whitebread of Junction City, Kansas; two granddaughters, Claira and Sadie Whitebread of Junction City, Kansas; one brother, John Jenkins; three sisters, Virginia Koonce, Maraland Stevens, and June Young.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Brian Gould.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Richard Duane Avery II, age 72, died September 12, 2023, at his residence in Wakefield, KS. He was born to Richard and Grace (Gulley) Avery, in Shiloh Valley, Illinois, on January 20, 1951. Richard grew up in Rolla, Missouri. He graduated from Rolla High School at seventeen and quickly enlisted in the Army. Richard began his military career in 1968 as a tank loader and driver. He quickly worked his way up in rank and was a Tank Platoon Sergeant and Commander by 1974. From 1979 through 1985 he was stationed in West Germany working for headquarters as an Intelligence Sergeant and Tanker. Richard went back to Fort Riley and finished his career in 1993 holding a Non Commissioned Officer position in charge of Crage Fitness Center. He earned his associate degree through Central Texas College during his time in service. Richard retired after 25 years of service and earned many commendations and medals some include a national defense service medal, meritorious service medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and a Bronze Star.&nbsp;

Richard was a collector of all things. He was a firm believer that one was never enough. He enjoyed college football and was an avid Chief fan. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. &nbsp;Richard is preceded in death by his parents.

James (Jim) C. Livingston, 70 of Abilene passed away September 15, 2023. He was born October 11, 1952 in Abilene, the son of Glen and Theodora (Stants) Livingston. He grew up in the Dickinson County area and graduated from Chapman High School in 1970. Jim’s occupations consisted of working at Walker Stone Company, Hulcher Train Wrecking, as well as worked as an over the road truck driver, hauling cattle and other products. He was a member of the fraternal Order of Eagles club 830 of Junction City, joining in 1975.Growing up on the farm, Jim and his classmate Galyn (Shari’s brother) enjoyed terrorizing the town. He will be remembered as being eclectic in his ways of antiquing and overall “collections” around his home and farm. His affinity for beer signs and old cars was second to none. Believe it or not, he even collected a few porcelain dolls for his grandchildren. He could never resist a “quick” stop at the casino while out on the road traveling with Shari and Maynard. We are saddened to say that the Hornet has now signed off and has joined Phantom and Thumper.

Jim is survived by his pillow partner of 27 ½ years Shari Lenhart; sister, Janice Warhurst of KS; daughter, Laura Harden of NC; son, John Livingston and wife Amanda of VA; grandchildren, Alexis Johnson (Craig); Austin and Dakota Boatright; Devin, Derik, Darius, and Ariah Harden; Brooke Livingston; great-grandchildren, Jace Kain and Alayna Johnson; stepchildren Dustin and Darci Wheeler. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Catrina Boatright and two brothers, Dennis and Kenneth.

Funeral Services for Jim will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Danner Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Livingston/Union Cemetery, 2951 Indy Rd, Abilene, KS. Ronald E. Mangel, 89, of Alma, Nebraska, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on September 5, 2023.

 </figure>Ronald E. Mangel, 89, of Alma, Nebraska, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on September 5, 2023. Born on August 25, 1934 in Herington, Kansas to Earl and Theresa (Mangel) Pawling. Theresa passed when he was just a toddler, leaving his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Minnie Mangel to raise him. He was a retired Union Steamfitter, Plumber and Orbital Welder. He was a very loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He “Loved it when a plan came together" and was always the Happiest guy in the room! He will be greatly missed for his sense of humor and his contagious smile. He was quite a character in his own right. An avid sports fan, a world traveler, a painter, a poet, a story writer and he loved to read. He is survived by his five children- Terri Werger, Rondy (Ross) Mussina, Rick (Susan) Mangel, Tami Mangel, Rod (Melissa) Mangel; two stepsons- Mark Herbel, Mike Herbel; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Proceeded in death by both of his parents and his grandparents. Services will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, KS.
