Norman R. Helmke, 86, of Abilene passed away February 1, 2024. He was born October 28, 1937 in Pratt, Kansas, the son of Richard and Berniece (Haning) Helmke. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Kansas State University in Agricultural Economics. Norman served two years in the Army, serving from 1960-1962. Following the military he began a forty year career at Central National Bank where he met his wife. On April 19, 1964 he was united in marriage to Cecelia Strauss. She preceded him in death January 16, 2021.
Norman is survived by his daughter, Arlene Berven and husband David of Abilene. One son, Keith Helmke and wife Becky of Wellsville, Kansas. Three grandchildren: Rochelle Krieger, Cody Berven, and Jacob Berven. Five great-grandchildren: Dezeray, Brooklyn, Hudson, Raelynn and Oaklee. One brother, Robert Helmke and wife Susan of Pratt and Carol Bauck of Ottawa. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Funeral services for Norman will be 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Abilene. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 P.M. at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. Family suggests memorials be given to Village Manor or the Faith Lutheran Church.
