Manhattan ( 5-3 ) has drawn a home game with Garden City ( 3-5 ) in the first round of the Class 6A postseason playoffs. The contest will be played Friday, Oct. 30.

This will be the second meeting this season between the two teams. Manhattan defeated Garden City 21-7 in the season opener back on Sept. 4.

The winner of the game between the Indians and Buffaloes will play the winner of Wichita East - Haysville Campus in round two of the playoffs.

ICYMI: Klieman, Players Spoke to Media Prior to Sunflower Showdown

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– A meeting between Kansas State and Texas A&amp;M at Bramlage Coliseum is one of 10 games scheduled between the Big 12 and SEC on Saturday, January 30, 2021, as ESPN and the two conferences announced the eighth annual SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Wednesday morning (October 21).

ESPN will provide coverage of all games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU with start times and complete television information to be released later.

“The Challenge series continues to be a great success for both the Big 12 and SEC,” said head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber.

“It has also become one of the most competitive in the country with the conferences tying for the second time in the last four years in 2020. Texas A&amp;M is another great addition to our schedule and we know that any Buzz Williams-coached team will be difficult opponent to play.”

The two leagues tied for the second time in 2020 with five wins each. The Big 12, which led the nation in non-conference strength of schedule and was second in the NET ranking and overall strength of schedule in 2019-20,

has won four of the seven Challenge series (2014, 2015, 2016, 2019), posting a 40-30 (.571) overall record.

K-State is 3-4 all-time in the Challenge series with all three wins coming at home (Ole Miss in 2013 and 2016 and Georgia in 2018). This will be second meeting with Texas A&amp;M in the Challenge series and the first time since the Aggies posted a 65-53 win at Reed Arena in College Station in the latest meeting on January 26, 2019.

Overall, K-State leads the series, 18-9, including 11-0 at home venues. This will be the eighth non-conference meeting (1960, 1967, 1990, 1993, 2014, 2015, 2019) and the fourth since Texas A&amp;M departed the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012-13. The teams split a home-and-home series in 2014 (K-State, 71-64, in Kansas City) and 2015 (Texas A&amp;M, 78-68, in College Station) before the last meeting in the Challenge series in 2019.

The former league partners met at least once a year from 1997 until 2012 with the Wildcats holding a 13-7 advantage, including an 8-0 mark at Bramlage Coliseum.

Led by second-year head coach and 2020 AP SEC Coach of the Year&nbsp;Buzz Williams, the Aggies return three starters (Savion Flagg,&nbsp;Andre Gordon&nbsp;and&nbsp;Emanuel Miller) from a team that rebounded from a tough start to post a school-record 10 SEC wins en route to a 16-14 overall record in the shortened 2019-20 season. The Aggies were just 6-6 in non-conference play but rallied for a tie for sixth place in SEC play with a 10-8 mark, which included five wins in their last seven outings.

A rising senior, Flagg was second on the team in scoring a year ago, averaging 10.4 points on 41 percent shooting, including 37 from 3-point range, to go with 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in starting 29 of 30 games. Miller led the Aggies with 6.3 rebounds per game (and 6.4 points) in 25 starts as a true freshman, while fellow rookie Gordon added 6.3 points and 2.1 rebounds averages in 18 starts.

This will be the second scheduled meeting with a former conference rival in 2020-21, as the Wildcats are set to play Colorado on Friday, November 27 in the Little Apple Classic at Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State to Host Texas A&M in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State Head Coach Chris Klieman, as well as select members of the football program spoke to media via Zoom call on Tuesday for their weekly press conference ahead of this week's bout with in-state rival Kansas.&nbsp;

When asked his thoughts on the game, Klieman emphasized that despite the series being lopsided of late, the magnitude of the game was unchanged.

"I think it's a big rivalry. Obviously, I've only been here for one year, but for the state of Kansas, it's a big deal," said Klieman. "So many of our guys know a lot of players on their team, and absolutely any time that you have teams from the same state going against each other... I think it's a big deal."&nbsp;

Kansas has the edge in the all-time series between the two schools 64-48-5, but Kansas State has won 11-consecutive matchups, and 24 of the last 29 dating back to 1991.&nbsp;

"Our kids, and our alums, and our fanbase and community, and the state, this is a big game, so our guys are excited for the opportunity," Klieman added.&nbsp;

Last season, Kansas state throttled the Jayhawks in Lawrence 38-10 in front of a near sellout crowd at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, but this year, fan attendance will be limited; however, Jahron McPherson says the lack of fans won't impact the team's play.

"In all honesty, I think me and my teammates, when we're out there we don't even recognize the crowd," said the Basehor, Kansas native. "It's just blocked out because we're so tuned in on the goal at hand, and that's to try to win."&nbsp;

McPherson, as well as the other three Wildcat athletes who spoke to the media all seemed to share one thought on Kansas, and it's that they were overlooked in recruiting by the Jayhawks and that it provided a chip on their shoulder, or motivation heading into the contest.&nbsp;

"You know, growing up in Topeka and only being 30 minutes away from the university, was kind of just a respect thing," said Defensive End Wyatt Hubert. "Kansas State came out and offered me first, and had that trust and belief in me, and kind of KU really not having that, was kind of a disappointment a little bit."&nbsp;

Hubert earned First Team All-Big 12 honors at defensive end in 2019, totaling seven sacks from his position on the line.&nbsp;

Obviously, I've only been here for one year, but for the state of Kansas, it's a big deal," said Klieman. "So many of our guys know a lot of players on their team, and absolutely any time that you have teams from the same state going against each other... I think it's a big deal."&nbsp;Kansas has the edge in the all-time series between the two schools 64-48-5, but Kansas State has won 11-consecutive matchups, and 24 of the last 29 dating back to 1991.&nbsp;"Our kids, and our alums, and our fanbase and community, and the state, this is a big game, so our guys are excited for the opportunity," Klieman added.&nbsp;Last season, Kansas state throttled the Jayhawks in Lawrence 38-10 in front of a near sellout crowd at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, but this year, fan attendance will be limited; however, Jahron McPherson says the lack of fans won't impact the team's play."In all honesty, I think me and my teammates, when we're out there we don't even recognize the crowd," said the Basehor, Kansas native. It is the second honor for Parker following the game against the Horned Frogs as he was also named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after helping K-State earn a 21-14 victory in Fort Worth.

A native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Parker recorded a key touchdown on a 37-yard interception return to push the Wildcats’ advantage to 14 points with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. It was the first interception-return touchdown in Parker’s career and the first by a Wildcat since Duke Shelley did so at Texas Tech in 2017.

Parker, who also came away with five tackles at TCU, now has six career interceptions to rank 15th&nbsp;nationally among active players. He is also tied for fifth in the Big 12 this season in passes defended as the Wildcats have three players reside in the top six in that category.

Wildcats Nab Pair of Big 12 Weekly Honors

In place of Head Coach Les Miles, Defensive Coordinator DJ Eliot spoke to the media on behalf of Kansas Monday during the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference.

Miles, who tested positive for COVID-19 late last week has been in quarantine, but keeping close communication with Eliot and his other coaches and players via Zoom.&nbsp;

Eliot said that Coach Miles put a plan into place immediately after testing positive on Thursday, and that Miles is expected to be at KU's next contest against West Virginia on Saturday.

When asked if having a bye this past week helped in dealing with Coach Miles' absence, Eliot mentioned again that Miles although not physically present, has been very active in the team's preparation and meetings.&nbsp;

Eliot also addressed how Miles was not the first person on the team to test positive, so he was confident in the guidelines and protocols the team had in place to make sure that the "limited number" of cases Kansas has had as a team stays that way.&nbsp;

"It's important that all members of the team and staff do their part to take care of each other," said Eliot. "We are well-versed in someone on the team testing positive for Covid and we've had a very limited spread here at Kansas, and we feel comfortable where we are."

On the football side of things, Eliot was asked about his thoughts on the Big 12's defensive reputation, and if him seeing the SEC defenses begin to struggle more with the up-tempo style that has recently appeared in one of the nation's toughest defensive conferences.&nbsp;

"The only power five conference I haven't coached in is the Big Ten, so I've seen a lot of different styles of attack and I've seen a lot of different approaches and I think that the up-tempo spread attack is popular and I think it's going to trickle into the other conferences as well," said Eliot. " So, I wouldn't say that I'm excited, I almost felt sorry for the defensive coordinators to be honest with you because I've kind of felt their pain before."

Eliot went on to discuss how he thought that the trend was only going to continue and that the up-tempo spread style will start to become more apparent in other leagues.&nbsp;

During his time on the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference, Kansas State Head Coach Chris Klieman announced that Senior Quarterback Skylar Thompson's season is over.

Thompson was injured in Kansas State's 31-21 victory over Texas Tech on October 3rd, forcing Freshman Will Howard into the starting role.&nbsp;

"Skylar's going to be done for the year," said Klieman. "He had surgery last week on an upper body injury, so unfortunately his season is over with."

Last week, K-State coaches and players were optimistic about Thompson's ability to play against TCU; however, it was later made public that the senior captain did not make the trip to Fort Worth with the team.&nbsp;

"It was difficult, obviously," said Klieman about the emotional toll of the injury. "When you have a senior captain that goes down, but I think he's handled it well. I haven't seen him, but visited with him."

Klieman then went on to acknowledge how his team has seen this type of thing before, and that it can be difficult to see a veteran leader lose their season due to injury.&nbsp;

"That's the worst part of this game," he said. "Those things are so emotional because everybody knows the amount of time and effort that guys put in to have an opportunity to play, and this great game you just know it can be taken away from you at any time."

It's unclear at this time whether Skylar Thompson's career as a Wildcat is over, but the senior does have the possibility of a redshirt available to him should he decide to use it.&nbsp;

Kansas State will be idle this week before hosting in-state rival Kansas at 11 a.m. on October 24th.&nbsp;

Kansas State returns to the college football rankings

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — AJ Parker returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and Kansas State improved to 3-0 in the Big 12 with a 21-14 win at TCU. It was the Wildcats' FBS-best 119th non-offensive touchdown since 1999. 

True freshman quarterback Will Howard ran for a score and threw for 117 yards. Howard started in place of senior Skylar Thompson, who didn’t even make the trip to Fort Worth a week after getting injured in the first half against Texas Tech.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State will tip off the 2020-21 men’s basketball season by hosting the inaugural Little Apple Classic on Wednesday and Friday, November 25 and 27 at Bramlage Coliseum with a field that will include former conference foe Colorado and fellow 20-game winners Drake and South Dakota State.

Each team is expected to play two games with Colorado and South Dakota State tipping off the tournament on Wednesday followed by a matchup between K-State and Drake. The teams will flip on the final day with Drake and SDSU competing in the first game on Friday followed by the renewal of the rivalry between the Wildcats and Buffaloes for the first time in nearly a decade.

Ticket information as well as tip times and television broadcast information will be released at a later date.

“We are excited about the opportunity to host these three quality programs for the Little Apple Classic at Bramlage Coliseum to kick off the season,” said head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber. “All three teams won 20 or more games ago, so it should be a really, competitive environment and a great opportunity for our team to start at home. We look forward to being tremendous hosts and providing a great experience for these teams and fans.”

All three teams won 20 or more games in 2019-20 and return at least one all-conference player in 2020-21 highlighted by reigning Summit League Player of the Year&nbsp;Douglas Wilson&nbsp;(18.6 ppg., 6.4 rpg.) of South Dakota State, All-Pac-12 First Team selection&nbsp;McKinley Wright IV&nbsp;(14.4 ppg., 5.7 rpg., 5.0 apg.) of Colorado and Missouri Valley Conference assist leader&nbsp;Roman Penn&nbsp;(12.0 ppg., 5.6 apg.) of Drake.

South Dakota State captured a share of 2019-20 Summit League regular-season title with a 22-10 overall record, including a 13-3 mark in conference play, under first-year head coach&nbsp;Eric Henderson. Colorado won 21 games a season ago – the seventh 20-win season for the Buffaloes under 11th-year head coach&nbsp;Tad Boyle&nbsp;– which included 10 in Pac-12 play to finish in a tie for fifth place. Drake collected its second consecutive 20-win campaign under current third-year head coach&nbsp;Darian DeVries, which included an 8-10 mark in Missouri Valley play.

With just one senior in&nbsp;Mike McGuirl, the host Wildcats will be one of the youngest teams in the country, but boast the highest-rated recruiting class under Weber and the highest collective class by K-State since recruiting rankings have been kept.&nbsp;Four of the five prep players were rated among the Top 200 players nationally, including three members (Selton Miguel,&nbsp;Nijel Pack&nbsp;and&nbsp;Davion Bradford) of the&nbsp;Rivals150, while junior&nbsp;Rudi Williams&nbsp;and sophomore&nbsp;Carlton Linguard, Jr.&nbsp;were considered two of the top junior college players in the country.

This will mark the first time K-State has hosted a men’s tournament in this format at Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats did host Alabama-Huntsville and Lamar for two games in the Midwest Regional of the NIT Season Tip-Off on November 12-13, 2012 in Weber’s first season before heading to the Championship Round in New York City.

K-State will face Drake for the first time in more than six decades and the first time in a season opener since 1952. The Wildcats lead the series, 20-6, including 10-2 at home, but this will be the first meeting since a 90-41 victory over the Bulldogs at Ahearn Field House on December 18, 1956.

K-State and Colorado have met 143 dating back to 1933, including as conference opponents from 1948 until 2011. The Wildcats hold a 96-47 advantage in the all-time series, including a 54-10 mark at home. The Buffaloes swept all three games in their final season in the Big 12 in 2011, including a 74-66 victory in their last visit to Bramlage Coliseum on January 12, 2011 in Boyle’s first season.

This will be the first visits to Bramlage Coliseum by both Drake and South Dakota State.

K-State continues to alter its original non-conference schedule after the NCAA announced on September 16 that it was pushing the season back from its original start date of Tuesday, November 10 to Wednesday, November 25 and reducing the number of games due to the ongoing COV-19 pandemic.

The Little Apple Classic takes the place of the Cayman Islands Classic, which was canceled on September 30.
