Klieman updated the media on Thompson, who he said did not physically practice on Monday, but took mental repetitions. Klieman remained optimistic that Thompson could play on Saturday at TCU, but that the team would be evaluating him daily.&nbsp;

In Thompson's absence, Freshman Will Howard was thrust into the starting role for Kansas State, completing seven of 12 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp;

Coach Klieman mentioned Howard played well and that he made great adjustments, specifically on the game-clinching touchdown pass to Deuce Vaughn.&nbsp;

On that play, Howard made what Klieman said was a "great read," and made a throw to his fellow freshman running back over the middle, carrying him forward into the open field where Vaughn ran 70 yards to the end zone.&nbsp;

Howard's performance Saturday appeared to give Klieman a hefty amount of confidence that if Skylar Thompson were unable to play in the upcoming matchup with TCU, the freshman would be able to step in and give Kansas State an opportunity to win.

Chris Klieman wasn't the only person to feel that way. Senior Tight End Briley Moore shared the sentiment in a simple statement.&nbsp;

The confidence should give Wildcat fans a sense of excitement heading into this week, as K-State has an opportunity to reach a 3-0 start to Big 12 Conference play for just the sixth time.&nbsp;

It marks the third time in the last four years a Wildcat has earned consecutive weekly conference honors, and it is the first of the newcomer variety since&nbsp;Skylar Thompson&nbsp;was honored after the Oklahoma State and Iowa State games in 2017.

Vaughn totaled 194 scrimmage yards against the Red Raiders, rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in three passes for 81 yards, which included a 70-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

A product of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn became the first Wildcat true freshman with a 100-yard rushing game since Logan Dold did so in 2008 against Texas A&amp;M. His 70-yard reception gave him back-to-back games with a reception of at least 70 yards, the first Wildcat to accomplish that feat in the regular season since Tyler Lockett in 2013 against Oklahoma and TCU.

Vaughn’s 194 scrimmage yards against Texas Tech are the most by any player in the nation this year, and he also holds the No. 2 spot with 174 yards (45 rushing, 129 receiving) at No. 3 Oklahoma.

First and foremost, Deuce Vaughn, a true-freshman running back that amassed 113 rushing yards and two total touchdowns on the day. He became the first Wildcat true frosh to rush for over 100 yards since Logan Dold in 2008 in the effort.&nbsp;

Second, Will Howard,&nbsp; freshman quarterback was thrust into the main role after Skylar Thompson was injured in the first half on a late hit.&nbsp; Howard handled the spotlight well, passing for 172 yards and a touchdown while leading Kansas State to a 31-21 win over the Red Raiders.&nbsp;

Postgame, Head Coach Chris Klieman spoke highly of a long list of freshmen, touching all aspects of the game, stating that it speaks volumes about the players and how they can impact the game from day one, "whether it's 25 plays or 75 plays."

Kansas State lead 14-0 at the half, but Texas Tech, who also had to thrust their backup quarterback into a starting role due to injury, came roaring back in the second half to take a 21-17 lead in the 4th quarter.

Kansas State would make the big plays when they mattered most though. Immediately following Texas Tech taking the lead for the first time, Will Howard connected with Briley Moore on a 66-yard connection down the right sideline setting up K-State for a short touchdown run by Harry Trotter.&nbsp;

K-State would then fight as the Red Raiders drew close to the end zone, but a stellar interception in the end zone by Jahron McPherson gave the Wildcats the ball back with a chance to seal the win.

It was then that Will Howard connected with his freshman back Deuce Vaughn for a 70-yard touchdown to put K-State up by 10 with just two minutes to play.&nbsp; From there, the Wildcat defense would slam the door, stopping Texas Tech on fourth down to win the game.

Oklahoma State rolls past Kanssas 

KANSAS CITY (AP) —The NFL postponed this week's game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs&nbsp;after ''positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.'' ESPN reported on Saturday that Patriots&nbsp;quarterback Cam Newton&nbsp;was among those testing positive.

The NFL said on Saturday that the game, originally scheduled for 4:25 p.m. EDT on Sunday, will be played on Monday or Tuesday, a move that would be possible only if there is no wider spread of the disease on the rosters.

The Patriots confirmed that a player has tested positive but did not reveal his name. Newton's agent did not immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press seeking confirmation.

The only known Chiefs player to test positive is quarterback Jordan Ta'amu, a member of the practice squad who has not appeared in a game but would have spent time in meetings with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and the team's other QBs.

It is the second game this weekend that has been affected by COVID-19. After an outbreak on the Titans, the matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee was postponed - originally for a day or two, and then until Oct. 25 as the positive tests accumulated.

To fit it in, the Steelers' game against Baltimore that day was pushed back to Nov. 1.

The Patriots had been planning to fly to Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. Instead, players left the facility to await further instructions. The team said in a statement that the COVID-positive player has entered self-quarantine and that players, coaches and staff who were in close contact with him were tested Saturday morning and all were negative.

Earlier this week, Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty&nbsp;said the league might have grown overconfident after making it through training camps and the first two weeks of the season without a major outbreak.

''But at the end of the day, we are in a pandemic,'' he said. ''So what happened in Tennessee, although it kind of shocks us, it's not really surprising. I think we all knew at some point we might get some positive tests.

''So it's like, 'We got this,''' he said. ''I think this is just a little shocker, but it's also a wakeup call, like 'Hey, the virus is still here and it will affect any and everybody. It doesn't care that we're trying to play football.'''

UNDATED (AP) — The College Football Playoff will stick with the four-team format this season. Executive director Bill Hancock says Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott asked the management committee to consider having eight teams play for the national championship.  The expansion request was made because of disruptions caused by the pandemic. 

Conferences are not playing the same number of games and kicking off their seasons at different times. Playoff leadership decided to stick with four semifinalists, who will square off at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl before the title game in Miami on Jan. 11.

Kansas State trailed by 21 points twice against the third-ranked Sooners, including a 35-14 deficit late in the third quarter. The Wildcats then scored 24 unanswered points en route to a 38-35 victory. It was K-State’s first road win ever over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The 21-point comeback tied with four other games for the largest comeback in school history, however the contest at OU was the latest to start the comeback as the Wildcats’ began their 24-point run with 1:36 left in the third quarter.

K-State now has a pair of top-five victories in Klieman’s two seasons as head coach after the Wildcats defeated the fifth-ranked Sooners, 48-41, last season in Manhattan. It marked the first time in school history that Kansas State defeated a top-five team in consecutive seasons.

The Wildcats, now 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in Big 12 play, will host its conference home opener this Saturday against Texas Tech. Kickoff is slated for at 2:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on FS1.

 Ebner had two more TDs as the Bears won their latest opener in 56 years after two non-conference games were called off for COVID-19 reasons. For a second straight season Kansas State has defeated the Oklahoma Sooners. Trailing 35-14 in the third quarter the Wildcats scored 24 unanswered points to defeat the Sooners 38-35.

With his team training 21-7 at halftime, Coach Chris Klieman challenged his team. "Knew we could play better, knew we could finish."

A key play in the rally came when the Wildcats blocked a punt. "We really thought if we could get those guys off the field once we had a chance to block a punt, we were only going to get one shot at it but we thought we could get a block and we were going to come after it. Then it was the right time, we were able to get the block. "

AJ Parker blocked a fourth quarter punt and a short time later with 8:17 remaining in the game Deuce Vaughn rambled 38 yards for a score. With the PAT by Blake Lynch Kansas State tied the game at 35-35.&nbsp;

The winning points came on a 50-yard field goal by Blake Lynch with 4:32 remaining in the contest.&nbsp;

Skyler Thompson was 18-25 passing for 334 yards and a touchdown while Deuce Vaughn rushed for 51 yards and a score and caught four passes for 129 yards including a 77-yard reception and run.

Kansas State ( 1-1 ) is scheduled to Texas Tech on Oct. 3. Oklahoma ( 1-1 ) is scheduled to play at Iowa State on Oct. 3.

KSHSAA announces school classification changes for 2020-2021

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Royals outfielder Alex Gordon announced today that he will retire from baseball, effective this Sunday, following the season finale vs. the Detroit Tigers. 

Gordon, a seven-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner and Rawlings Platinum Glove winner (2014), ranks among the franchise’s all-time leaders in most all offensive categories, including walks (682, 3rd), home runs (190, 4th), doubles (357, 5th), extra-base hits (573, 5th), games played (1,749, 6th), at-bats (6,380, 6th), runs (867, 6th), hits (1,641, 6th) and RBI (749, 6th).

Gordon, who started all 16 postseason games during Kansas City’s 2015 World Series run, has played his entire 14-year career with Kansas City from 2007-20, making him one of three position players to play 14 seasons (or more) with the Royals, joining George Brett (21 seasons) and Frank White (18). Gordon’s 1,749 games entering tonight are the fourth most of any active player who has played for only one team, trailing Yadier Molina (2,021), Joey Votto (1,768) and Ryan Braun (1,761).

Gordon was selected second overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nebraska and made his Major League debut on Opening Day in 2007 as a third baseman, before moving to left field during the 2010 season. In his first full season in the outfield in 2011, he earned his first of seven Rawlings Gold Glove Awards while leading the Majors with 20 outfield assists, a mark that has not been topped by any player in nine seasons since.

Gordon is one of two players—and the only outfielder—to earn seven Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in the nine-year span from 2011-19, joining third baseman Nolan Arenado, who won seven straight from 2013-19. Gordon won four straight Rawlings Gold Gloves from 2011-14, becoming the first American League outfielder to do so since Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter each won 10 straight from 2001-10. Following injury-plagued seasons in 2015-16, Gordon went on to win three more Rawlings Gold Gloves from 2017-19, and his seven Rawlings Gold Gloves are second most in Royals history, trailing only Frank White’s eight.

Gordon is also a three-time Wilson Defensive Player of the Year, earning the honor in 2014 and from 2017-18. In 2014, he was named the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winner, which honors the best overall defensive player in each league. He was the first outfielder to earn the award, which was established in 2011.

His 101 career outfield assists are most in the Majors since 2010 and rank second in Royals history behind only Amos Otis’ 116.

Gordon is the Royals’ all-time leader in leadoff home runs (14) and hit-by-pitches (121), the latter of which are 43 more than second place Mike Macfarlane (78). Gordon set a single-season career-high with an American League-most 19 plunkings in 2019, which were the second-highest single-season total in club history, trailing only David DeJesus’ 23 in 2007. Gordon’s 121 hit-by-pitches rank fourth among active players behind Anthony Rizzo (154), Shin-soo Choo (152) and Derek Dietrich (122).

Among many other things, Gordon will be remembered for one of the most iconic home runs in franchise history, a game-tying home run off Mets’ closer Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning of Game 1 in the 2015 World Series, which forced extra innings and led to a Royals win in 14 innings. Gordon also drove in the go-ahead run in Game 4 of the ALDS in Houston that year, as the Royals rallied from a four-run deficit in the eighth inning to extend the series to a fifth game that the Royals won to advance to the ALCS.

In the 2014 postseason, Gordon matched a franchise record with four RBI in Game 1 of the ALCS vs. Baltimore, including a bases-clearing double in the third inning and a go-ahead homer in the 10th. That followed a three-RBI effort in his previous game in the ALDS vs. the Angels. Gordon’s 10 postseason doubles rank second in Royals history and 17 postseason RBI rank fourth.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez and Franchy Cordero hit two homers and drove in five runs apiece, and the Kansas City Royals went on to pummel the playoff-contending St. Louis Cardinals 12-3 in their series finale Wednesday night. 

Danny Duffy earned the win by pitching into the sixth inning. Carlos Martinez took the loss, allowing eight runs before leaving with lower back pain in the sixth. The Cardinals remain 3 1/2 games back of the first-place Cubs in the NL Central but had their lead for the No. 2 spot in the division nearly wiped out. They are 27-26 to lead the Reds, who are 29-28, by percentage points.
