ATLANTA (AP) — Hank Aaron, who endured racist threats with stoic dignity during his pursuit of Babe Ruth but went on to break the career home run record in the pre-steroids era, died early Friday. He was 86

The Atlanta Braves said Aaron died peacefully in his sleep. No cause of death was given.

Aaron made his last public appearance less than two weeks ago when he received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Hammerin’ Hank” set a wide array of career hitting records during a 23-year career spent mostly with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, including RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

But the Hall of Famer will be remembered for one swing above all others, the one that made him baseball’s home-run king.

It was a title he would hold for more than 33 years, a period in which the Hammer slowly but surely claimed his rightful place as one of America’s most iconic sporting figures, a true national treasure worthy of mention in the same breath with Ruth or Ali or Jordan.

Davis and the Royals agreed to a minor league contract, and the 35-year-old right-hander will go to spring training trying to earn a spot on the major league roster. 

Davis is a three-time All-Star who had 47 saves for the Royals from 2013-16. He pitched the final out of the 2015 World Series against the New York Mets, throwing a called third strike past Wilmer Flores. Davis had two saves for Colorado during last year’s pandemic-shortened season, when his ERA shot up to 20.77. The Rockies released him in September.

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Kansas State High School Activities Association held a special Board of Directors meeting Wednesday to discuss amending the spectator restrictions for high school events.&nbsp;

Currently, the KSHSAA allows up to two spectators per participant to attend events at schools, with schools having&nbsp; the ability to allow no fans or spectators at their own discretion.&nbsp;

The amendment would allow up to four spectators per participant beginning on January 29th, with adequate social distancing and mask wearing still required.&nbsp;

The amendment also states that "Local school districts may choose to have stricter limitations based on seating and local health department guidelines."&nbsp;

The amendment would also continue through the end of the winter sports season in the state of Kansas.&nbsp;

The KSHSAA Board of Directors voted in favor of the amendment, with it passing 46-27. Thus, beginning on Friday, January 29th, schools may allow up to four spectators per participant at events.

Alondes Williams added 13 points and Kur Kuath had 12 points and five blocks for Oklahoma. DaJuan Gordon scored 13 points for Kansas State.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a></a>Kansas State true freshman&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;picked up yet another postseason accolade as he was named the all-purpose player on the 2020 Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team, the organization announced Monday.

Vaughn is the eighth Wildcat to be named to the team since the FWAA began naming Freshman All-Americans in 2001.&nbsp;It is the second-straight season a Wildcat has been named a Freshman All-American by the FWAA and the fifth in the last 10 years.

A product of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn rushed for 642 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games, while he caught 25 passes for 434 yards and another two scores. Vaughn also added kickoff-return duties to his repertoire late in the year, returning seven kickoffs for 145 yards (20.7-yard average). He was one of only three players in the nation during the 2020 season to tally at least 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards on the year, joining fellow running backs Travis Etienne (Clemson) and Najee Harris (Alabama).

Vaughn set the K-State freshman records for rushing yards, yards from scrimmage (1,076) and all-purpose yards (1,221). He also finished second in rushing touchdowns and third in receiving yards among freshmen, while he ranked fourth in school history in points scored by a freshman (54) and is the only non-kicker on the list.

The honor by the FWAA added to Vaughn’s accolades in 2020 as he was named the True Freshman of the Year by 247Sports, a Freshman All-American by&nbsp;The Athletic&nbsp;and an Honorable Mention All-American by Phil Stele. Vaughn was also named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches and was a Second Team All-Big 12 performer by both the coaches and the Associated Press. He was the first Wildcat true freshman in the Big 12 era (since 1996) to earn First or Second Team All-Big 12 honors on offense.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs forced the Cleveland Browns to punt in the waning minutes Sunday with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes out with a concussion. Then 35-year-old backup Chad Henne showed some moxie with a long third-down scramble and a fourth-down completion to Tyreek Hill with just over a minute left to give the Chiefs a first down and allowing them to run out the clock on a 22-17 victory in the divisional round of the playoffs.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Kamaka Hepa scored 15 points and No. 4 Texas rebounded from its first Big 12 loss of the season by thumping Kansas State 82-67. 

The Longhorns broke the game open with an 18-0 run midway through the first half keyed by a burst of 3-pointers and a defensive press that rattled the Wildcats. Hepa made five 3-pointers in his first start and just his fourth game overall this season. Andrew Jones added 19 points for the Longhorns. Texas made 12 3-pointers. Kansas state has lost four in a row.

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;Cheryl Gleason, Assistant Executive Director of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, has announced her decision to retire from the KSHSAA staff effective July 1, 2021.&nbsp; She has served in this position since joining the staff on November 1, 1989.&nbsp;During her tenure, Gleason has been responsible for the administration of bowling, golf, gymnastics, sportsmanship summits, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, the KSHSAA Hall of Fame and the Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) program.&nbsp;Gleason was also involved with general interpretation of KSHSAA rules for the member schools of the Association.

A native of Columbus, Kansas, Gleason earned her bachelor’s degree at Southwestern College prior to completing a master’s in physical education at Pittsburg State University.&nbsp;She became a physical education instructor and coach at Caldwell Elementary and High School.&nbsp;Gleason later became a teacher and coach at Osawatomie High School prior to joining the Association staff. She has served as a teacher, coach, and administrator in support of Kansas schools for a total of 45 years.&nbsp;

“Ms. Gleason has been a faithful and valued member of our team as her service and leadership resulted in a positive impact on each member of our office staff while providing significant experiences and growth opportunities for students across Kansas,” as noted by KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick. “Her energy, creativity, and desire to connect students with learning opportunities have helped prepare students to be successful in life.”

During her 32-year career with the KSHSAA, Gleason grew the KAY program via conferences and leadership camps for which she administered hundreds of students each year. Her work with the KAY began as a counselor and staff member for camps the summer after graduating from high school – a full 18 years before joining the Association staff. Gleason’s efforts and enthusiasm helped with the founding of the KAY Alumni Network to offer support for members after high school graduation.

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;Kansas State will kick off the 2021 season on September 4 against Stanford at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, as the two teams have been chosen for the 2021 Allstate Kickoff Classic, which annually hosts the premier season-opening contest in college football.

“We were honored when AT&amp;T Stadium contacted us about potentially playing in this prestigious game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “The idea of taking a home game away from Manhattan and Bill Snyder Family Stadium is a big decision, and as a staff and university, we feel that it is an opportunity that we could not pass up.

“Our student-athletes will have the opportunity to play in one of the world’s finest venues, and Kansas State University and our football program will be in the national spotlight. Our fans have always enjoyed traveling to Arlington, and of course the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is one of our top markets for out of state graduates, and the 7,000-plus alums in the area will have the opportunity to support our team in person.”

The game will be the 12th contest to kick-off the college football season, the first as the Allstate Kickoff Classic and will mark the Wildcats’ second appearance at the venue.&nbsp;Past kickoff games in AT&amp;T Stadium have included some of the nation’s best programs such as Alabama, Michigan, Auburn, Wisconsin, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and Florida, among others.&nbsp; “We’re very excited to welcome a terrific new partner in Allstate as the premier sponsor of this iconic game that will kick off the 2021 college football season,” said Stephen Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Cowboys. “Here in Texas and across the country, the return of college football each year is a very special time. The Wildcats will be making their fourth appearance in the DFW area in non-conference games following Cotton Bowl appearances in 1997, 2001 and 2012.

With the season opener being moved to Arlington, the Wildcats will still have seven additional home games in Manhattan in 2021, including non-conference matchups with Southern Illinois (9/11) and Nevada (9/18), and five Big 12 home contests. Thompson, who is in his 19th year as the play-by-play voice of the Wildcats, is a six-time winner of the award and ranks second all-time among K-State broadcasters in awards and fourth all-time among broadcasters in the state of Kansas. In addition to his play-by-play duties for Wildcat football and men’s basketball, Thompson can be seen regularly each summer at each Catbacker event across the state in addition to hosting various radio programs, events and programs at K-State and in the Manhattan community. He started his broadcasting career in 1976 as a sportscaster for various high schools, colleges and universities in Kansas, spending time at stations in Great Bend and Abilene. Thompson worked for KAYS radio and television in Hays from 1985 until 1989 where he was the play-by-play voice at Fort Hays State. Sproles is the sixth K-State player or coach to be selected to college football’s highest honor and the third in the last 10 years. He joins former linebackers Gary Spani (Class of 2002) and Mark Simoneau (Class of 2012), as well as coaches Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf (Class of 1966), Charles Bachman (Class of 1978) and Bill Snyder (Class of 2015).

Joining Sproles as players in the Class of 2021 are Harris Barton (OT, North Carolina), David Fulcher (DB, Arizona State), Dan Morgan (LB, Miami), Carson Palmer (QB, USC), Tony Romo (QB, Eastern Illinois), Kenneth Sims (DT, Texas), C.J. Of the 5.47 million individuals who have played college football since Princeton first battled Rutgers on Nov. 6, 1869, only 1,027 players and 221 coaches have been immortalized in the Hall. In other words, only two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of those who have played or coached the game have earned this distinction.

The 2021 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 63rd&nbsp;NFF Annual Awards Dinner on December 7, alongside the 2020 Hall of Fame Class as this season’s event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 2003 First Team All-American and three-time All-Big 12 performer, Sproles held 28 school records at the time of graduation, 21 of which still stand 16 seasons after his playing days. The Olathe, Kansas, product rushed for 4,979 career yards, which ranks third in Big 12 history and is nearly 2,000 yards more than any other player in K-State history. Sproles, who finished fifth in the 2003 Heisman Trophy voting and third in the Associated Press Player of the Year voting that same season, was a three-time All-American.

Sproles played on some of the most memorable teams in K-State history as the Wildcats went 22-6 over his sophomore and junior seasons, including the 2003 campaign when Kansas State won its first Big 12 Championship with a 35-7 upset over top-ranked Oklahoma.

Sproles hold three of the top five marks for single season rushing yardage in school history, including the top mark of 1,986 yards in 2003. An accomplished receiver and returner, Sproles is also the school’s career record holder for all-purpose yards (6,812) thanks to 2,735 yards in 2003, also the top total in school history for a season. His career all-purpose yardage total ranked fifth in NCAA history at the time of his departure, while his 2003 output was fourth.

Following his time in Manhattan, Sproles enjoyed a 16-year NFL career with the then-San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles.

A fourth-round pick by San Diego in 2005, Sproles became an instant fan favorite, eventually setting the Chargers’ franchise record for career kickoff-return yards. In 2011 with the Saints, Sproles set the NFL single-season record for all-purpose yardage at 2,696 yards, a record that still stands.

Sproles finished his career with six years in Philadelphia, earning three Pro Bowl selections and earning a Super Bowl Ring following the 2017 season. He retired following the 2019 season, and he ranks sixth in NFL history in career all-purpose yardage with 19,696 yards.

A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-Decade Team for the 2010s, Sproles was also named to the San Diego Chargers’ 50th Anniversary Team, was selected to K-State’s Ring of Honor in 2015 and will be enshrined in the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame this fall.
