With more and more people interested in growing their own vegetables it is common to find that many gardeners in cities have only a little backyard space to utilize and thus a raised bed is called for.&nbsp; Growing in raised beds gets the attention of gardeners not only for space saving reasons, there are actually many other advantages to this type of gardening.

Raised bed gardens offer several advantages over conventional gardening plots. Soil raised above ground level warms up more quickly&nbsp;in the spring, which allows for earlier planting dates. The beds are ﬁlled with&nbsp;high-quality soil mixtures which improves drainage and increases yield.&nbsp;Raised beds are smaller than traditional gardens making them&nbsp;easier to maintain&nbsp;and denser plantings help reduce weed infestations.

Getting started with raised bed gardening isn’t difficult.&nbsp; There are many styles of raised beds that can be easily created.&nbsp; Wood is most commonly used, but cinder blocks, landscape timbers, rock, bricks and many other materials can work just fine.

Treated lumber used to contain arsenic and chromium which was considered unsafe in food gardens, but now most lumber is treated with the wood preservative ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) which is generally considered safe to use for raised bed gardening.&nbsp; If you are uncertain about the safety of treated lumber, place a heavy plastic liner between the treated lumber and the soil used for growing plants to prevent direct contact of plant roots with the treated lumber.&nbsp; Another option is to use a naturally rot resistant wood such as cedar.

Raised bed don’t even have to have a frame at all.&nbsp;You can build unframed (mounded) raised beds by tilling the existing garden soil 6 to 9 inches deep. Then add 2 to 3 inches of organic matter to the raised bed row and till it into the soil. This will have the effect of raising that area above the surrounding soil. Add soil and organic matter as needed to create mounded beds that are 8 to 12 inches above the surrounding soil and 3 to 4 feet wide. Walkways between unframed raised beds should be wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow. Spread a layer of mulch such as bark or straw over the walkways to reduce weed growth and mud problems.

Another option that is becoming more popular are galvanized steel raised bed gardening kits.&nbsp; These are easy to put together and strong and make an excellent choice for home gardeners.&nbsp; They come in many different shapes and sizes.

Dimensions of raised beds can vary according to the site.&nbsp;&nbsp;Common dimensions include 4×4, 4×8, or 4×10 sized beds.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 4-foot width or a little narrower is preferred&nbsp;because it allows for an easy reach into the bed from either side to tend the plants. This keeps soil compaction from occurring because the garden soil is not walked on.

The depth of a raised bed is important.&nbsp; Regardless of the material used to build the bed there needs to be enough soil depth to accommodate the type of plants to be grown.&nbsp; For most vegetables a soil depth of 12 inches is generally sufficient but 15 to 18 inches is even better.&nbsp; If bending or stooping is a problem for the gardener, a deeper bed can be built that allows for gardening in the standing position.

Raised beds can be made wheelchair accessible by making the walls about 2 feet tall and limiting the width of the bed to about 3 feet.

The biggest advantage of raised bed gardening is the opportunity to mix and amend your own soil. Most often a 50/50 mix of good quality topsoil and organic matter such as peat moss, compost, or composted manure creates a wonderful growing media that drains well and is easy to work in. Another popular raised bed mix includes 1/3 top soil, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 drainage increasing material such as perlite, vermiculite, bark, or coarse sand.

As with any garden site, the bed should be located in full sun for best production.&nbsp; The best location also provides wind protection. Summer winds can take their toll on vegetable crops. A tree, shrub screen or border will work if it is on the south or southwest side to protect the garden.&nbsp; If possible, raised beds should be also located where there is easy access to a water source.&nbsp; Raised beds can tend to dry out more quickly than traditional gardens and should be monitored for moisture needs regularly.&nbsp;&nbsp;A drip system is an efficient and easy way to provide irrigation to raised beds.

CENTRAL KANSAS L&G: Raised bed gardening is great way to grow

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a woman in custody at the Riley County Jail.

Just before 8:30a.m Saturday, Laura Pearce, 38, Manhattan, was found unresponsive in her single cell by Corrections Officers who immediately began lifesaving measures, according to a media release from the RCPD.

Riley County EMS was dispatched at 8:26 a.m. and arrived at 8:32 a.m. After lifesaving measures were continued by paramedics, Pearce was pronounced dead on scene at 8:52 a.m.

The&nbsp; RCPD is actively working with the KBI to provide all the information they need for a thorough investigation.&nbsp;At this time, officials believe the death was caused by suicide. No evidence of foul play has been found at this time, according to the release.

Per state statute, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) will be the lead agency investigating&nbsp;the death.

Pearce was extradited to the Riley County Jail on March 25, 2023, after being arrested in Marion County, Ohio on her Riley County District Court warrant for aggravated interference with parental custody.

Riley County Arrest Report April 15

MANHATTAN - The Aggieville Business Association addressed the Manhattan City Commissioners requesting to waive parking fees associated with the Aggieville Parking Garage and on April 4th, the City Commissioners declined to waive the fees.

According to Dennis Cook, Aggieville Business Association Director, following the meeting, city officials spoke to members of the Aggieville Business Association expressing their desire to provide assistance to the district, but in another way.

Members of the Aggieville Board of Directors, have come up with a proposal to present to the City Commission asking for funding to disperse throughout the business district.

The proposal includes purchasing gift cards and certificates from businesses within the district and then distribute them to members of the public to use and to boost the support of the businesses in Aggieville.

Aggieville Business Assn. requests relief funds from City of MHK

ATCHISON — A new museum in the birthplace of famous pilot Amelia Earhart is walking museum goers through the life of Earhart. &nbsp;

The $17 million museum was opened in Atchison by the Amelia Earhart Foundation.&nbsp;

Founder
 and President of the foundation Karen Seaberg said the museum is a 
unique mixture of history and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, 
and Math).&nbsp;

"There are a lot of STEM museums, there are a lot of 
history museums, but there are rarely any that can do both," Seaberg 
said.&nbsp;

Seaberg said the museum centers 
around Earhart's life and every exhibit is interactive, including a VR 
experience flying Earhart's plane across the Atlantic.&nbsp;

And upstairs, Seaberg said there is even more to experience.&nbsp;

"You
 can shoot the stars, or look at the stars, just like Fred Noonan would 
have on the flight around the world," Seaberg said. "And you can use 
the sextant, you can work with radio waves, the atmospheric pressures 
you have all the way up to space."&nbsp;

Noonan was the navigator that traveled with Earhart on her journey around the world which departed on May 21, 1937.&nbsp;

Downstairs in the museum children can even dress up as Earhart in 
four of her different careers, which Seaberg says was a big hit with 
focus groups.&nbsp;

The museum displays the life and adventures of the 
pilot born in Atchison, Kansas. But it also explores the theories behind
 her disappearance. &nbsp;

Seaberg says while the museum does not focus
 entirely on the theories, they do have an interesting way to explore 
those theories&nbsp;

"We pick six of the (theories), there's multiple 
theories, but we choose six, and we give a for and against," Seaberg 
explains. "So, you get to see why that may have happened or was it 
crazy, and then at the end you actually get to vote for which of the six
 you believe."&nbsp;

Seaberg says the museum is the first of its kind and something that Atchison has never had before.&nbsp;

"We've
 had the wonderful birthplace, and it's a beautiful home museum, but as 
far as I know there's nothing across the nation," Seaberg says. "There 
are a lot of things named for Amelia Earhart all across the nation, even
 internationally in Derry Northern Ireland and other places, but nothing
 that combines the STEM and Amelia's history."&nbsp;

 </figure>By MATT PIKE&nbsp; St. Joseph Post&nbsp;ATCHISON — A new museum in the birthplace of famous pilot Amelia Earhart is walking museum goers through the life of Earhart. &nbsp;The $17 million museum was opened in Atchison by the Amelia Earhart Foundation.&nbsp;Founder
 and President of the foundation Karen Seaberg said the museum is a 
unique mixture of history and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, 
and Math).&nbsp;"There are a lot of STEM museums, there are a lot of 
history museums, but there are rarely any that can do both," Seaberg 
said.&nbsp;Seaberg said the museum centers 
around Earhart's life and every exhibit is interactive, including a VR 
experience flying Earhart's plane across the Atlantic.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>And upstairs, Seaberg said there is even more to experience.&nbsp;"You
 can shoot the stars, or look at the stars, just like Fred Noonan would 
have on the flight around the world," Seaberg said. "And you can use 
the sextant, you can work with radio waves, the atmospheric pressures 
you have all the way up to space."&nbsp;Noonan was the navigator that traveled with Earhart on her journey around the world which departed on May 21, 1937.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Downstairs in the museum children can even dress up as Earhart in 
four of her different careers, which Seaberg says was a big hit with 
focus groups.&nbsp;The museum displays the life and adventures of the 
pilot born in Atchison, Kansas. But it also explores the theories behind
 her disappearance. &nbsp;Seaberg says while the museum does not focus
 entirely on the theories, they do have an interesting way to explore 
those theories&nbsp;"We pick six of the (theories), there's multiple 
theories, but we choose six, and we give a for and against," Seaberg 
explains. "So, you get to see why that may have happened or was it 
crazy, and then at the end you actually get to vote for which of the six
 you believe."&nbsp;Seaberg says the museum is the first of its kind and something that Atchison has never had before.&nbsp;"We've
 had the wonderful birthplace, and it's a beautiful home museum, but as 
far as I know there's nothing across the nation," Seaberg says. "There 
are a lot of things named for Amelia Earhart all across the nation, even
 internationally in Derry Northern Ireland and other places, but nothing

Atchison's own Amelia Earhart gets the museum she deserves

Over the last month, the Kansas legislature pushed through anti-trans woman bills HB180 and HB2238. HB180 establishes a&nbsp;“women's bill of rights to provide a meaning of biological sex for purposes of statutory construction.” In other words, the committee outlines terminology to establish a definition of sex in order to address legal discrimination against those assigned female at birth. The second legislation, HB2238, operates to “create fairness in women’s sports” by excluding women assigned male at birth.&nbsp;

Both bills purport to configure parameters for protecting women’s rights. However, the design is less a protection for women, and more an attempt to deny recognition of trans women.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Women assigned female at birth face particular forms of discrimination different from trans women. Similarly, black women assigned female at birth face unique forms of discrimination based on racial and gender dynamics that distinguishes their experiences from white women assigned female. Thus, women’s intersectional identities can impact the methods and forms of discrimination they face based on class, race, age, and original gender identification. However, the Kansas legislature has not embraced the complexity of women or the myriad of discriminations that impact them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For example, the legislature has an opportunity to pass a bill addressing domestic violence. Domestic violence homicides are a trend that continues to run high in Kansas, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. District Judge and former Republican state senator Phil Journey’s exposure to these violent cases in his court prompted him to develop legislative reform bills to curve domestic violence. These bills, however, have not flown through the legislature like HB180 and HB2238. Journey noted in the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/06/sedgwick-county-judge-offers-kansas-legislators-package-of-bills-to-stem-domestic-violence/">Kansas Reflector</a>&nbsp;that,&nbsp;“convincing the minimum 63 of 125 representatives, 21 of 40 senators and Gov. Laura Kelly to transform a piece of legislation into law wasn’t easy.”&nbsp;

Ironically, the current state statistics ignores how trans women also experience domestic violence. As&nbsp;<a href="https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/">UCLA School of Law</a>&nbsp;confirmed,&nbsp;“Transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender [those whose gender identity aligns to the gender assigned at birth] experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault, according to a new study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

These contradictions about who needs protection lie at the heart of both bills. Neither legislation addresses the violence&nbsp;all&nbsp;women (Trans and assigned female at birth) face, nor provides the real protection that all women need. The result is not new laws which protect women, but legislation that denies trans identity and civil rights by posing “women’s” rights as oppositional.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Indeed, this strategy of contradictory rights is a regular tool in conservative politics. The tactic has its roots in the latter 1960s when southern conservatives attempted to avoid school desegregation by claiming private Christian schools were a religious right. In its current form, these “counter rights” arguments have taken shape to turn back the clock on women’s reproductive rights, avoid teaching black history, and deny queer rights.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansans need genuine discussions about the needs of all women, no matter their birth assignment, race, age, or class. Many individuals are suffering from abusive violence, and our elected officials have the capacity to protect all Kansan women. The first step is to drop the pretense, and support actual protections for all women.&nbsp;

The National Weather Service in Topeka is warning of the potential of 75 mph wind gusts and half-dollar-size hail. There is a 70 percent chance of rain or thunderstorms in the area Friday evening and a 30 percent to 40 percent chance through Saturday.

A very high fire danger continues through the evening, as well.

Riley County Arrest Report April 14

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before noon Friday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Equinox driven by&nbsp; Kelsey Dawn Fountain, 29, Hill City, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Solomon in the right lane.

The Chevy moved to the left lane in front of a 2020 Subaru Forester driven by Bethany Nicole&nbsp;Pettit, 26, Holgate, Ohio.

The Subaru entered the median. The driver overcorrected to the right and then overcorrected to the left. The Subaru entered the median again and struck the guard rail.

A private vehicle transported a passenger in the Subaru&nbsp; Breeanne&nbsp;Barrentine, 21, Tallahassee, Florida to Abilene Memorial Hospital. Fountain, Pettit and a passenger in the Chevy were not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a wild weather weekend with everything from 90-degree weather to thunderstorms to snow possible.

After a warm, windy day with highs nearing 90, Friday night will bring a 50 percent percent chance of rain or thunderstorms. Some of those storms could be severe, the NWS in Topeka warned. Half-dollar-size hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph are possible.

Rain showers are expected to continue through the day Saturday, which will see a steep temperature dive. The high Saturday is only expected to be in the mid-50s.

There is a 30 percent chance of snow showers in the early morning hours Sunday, the NWS said. Skies are expected to clear by Sunday afternoon.

NWS: Severe storms and snow (?) possible in Flint Hills this weekend

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a domestic incident.

Just after 9a.m. Thursday, officers conducted a search warrant at a home in the 3300 block of Woods Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County&nbsp; Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Officers arrested James Watkins, 41, Manhattan, in connection to multiple occasions of domestic battery and threats to a 35-year-old woman known to him, violation of a protection order, and a March 28 altercation where it was reported he allegedly hit the woman, took her phone and would not let her leave for several hours. 

Watkins is being held on requested charges of interference with LEO due to his being uncooperative during the search warrant, four counts of aggravated intimidation of a victim, two counts of interference with LEO, and one count each of intimidation of a victim, robbery, criminal deprivation of property, criminal restraint, domestic battery, criminal threat, aggravated battery and violation of a protection order, according to the RCPD. 

He remains confined in the Riley County Jai with a total bond of $86,000.

Watkins is being held on requested charges of interference with LEO due to his being uncooperative during the search warrant, four counts of aggravated intimidation of a victim, two counts of interference with LEO, and one count each of intimidation of a victim, robbery, criminal deprivation of property, criminal restraint, domestic battery, criminal threat, aggravated battery and violation of a protection order, according to the RCPD. He remains confined in the Riley County Jai with a total bond of $86,000.

Opening remarks from&nbsp;former Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha, a Medal of Honor recipient, and retired Command Sgt. Maj. John Wayne Troxell, who served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave advice to those looking for the next step on their career path, before the start of the career summit.

The career summit included career planning, tips on using digital networking sites, access to assistance with resume writing and how to succeed in an interview.

In the afternoon more than 90 employers were setup to provide information on employment opportunities across the US for transitioning soldiers, their spouses and veterans.

 again offer interactive summer programs for children. Youth will have 
the opportunity to experience the hands-on learning style at K-State 
Salina, with numerous programs focused on aerospace or technology 
education. Summer programs, led by K-State Salina student clubs 
and faculty experts, include uncrewed aircraft systems, aviation and 
robotics. All courses are designed to suit the interests of children in 
elementary, middle or high school. K-State Salina is offering the following summer programs: •&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/youth-programs/summer/drone-engineering/" target="_blank">Drone Engineering</a>&nbsp;is
 offered for ninth- through 12th-graders and will be May 22-24. 
Participants will become acquainted with essential aspects of drone 
engineering by learning the concepts of aerodynamics and electronics 
while building their own drones. They will then test their drone skills 
at the Drone Challenge obstacle course. •&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/youth-programs/summer/aviation-fixation/" target="_blank">Aviation Fixation</a>&nbsp;will
 be offered June 5-7 for third- through fifth-graders. They will learn

in high-tech flight simulators and sit at the controls of the K-State 
Salina aircraft fleet to expand their knowledge of aviation and

A red flag warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. in the Flint Hills and burn bans are in place in Geary, Riley and Pottawatomie counties on Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Topeka said that after two more hot, windy, dry days on Thursday and Friday, the early morning hours Saturday bring a 60 percent chance of rain or thunderstorms.

The daytime highs in the mid-80s Thursday and Friday will drop to a daytime high in the upper-50s, the NWS said. The chance for rain extends into Saturday night before skies clear Sunday. 

The high Sunday is expected to be in the upper-60s, with the mercury beginning to tick closer to the 80s by early next week.

Shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Russell L. Thomas, 61, of Herington, was arrested on a warrant for aggravated intimidation of a witness. This crime is alleged to have occurred on April 7. Thomas is a middle school science teacher at Herington USD 487, according to the district web site.

Thomas was booked into the Dickinson County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000. He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that just after 3:30p.m. on Sunday December 5, 2021, an International semi driven by&nbsp; Moulden was westbound in the left lane on Interstate 70 and unable to move into the right lane due to a rollover accident near SW West Union Road involving a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by&nbsp;Dakota B. Swader, 20, of Topeka that entered the center median and came to rest upside down.&nbsp;

A pedestrian identified as Autumn Johnson, a 21-year-old Kansas State University student from Wasilla, Alaska,&nbsp; parked her vehicle on the right shoulder of west bound Interstate 70 along with other vehicles.

Johnson exited the vehicle and ran through traffic toward the median to assist Swader, according to Shawnee County Deputy Abigail Christian. The semi struck Johnson.

EMS transported Johnson to Stormont Vail in Topeka where she died.&nbsp; &nbsp; American Medical Response transported Swader to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Shawnee County Deputy Abigail Christian.&nbsp;

Johnson was<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/about/news-events-publications/lifelines/2112.html"> hailed as a hero</a> following the tragedy.&nbsp; She was a first-year veterinary science student at K-State.
