MANHATTAN - On Friday, November 10th, Sinkers Lounge opened the Manhattan location at the corner of 3rd and Poyntz Avenue in the Manhattan Town Center building.

Sinkers Lounge is an indoor mini golf and table-top golf restaurant.

“We are so pumped about Sinkers landing in Manhattan!,” said Matt Baysinger, CEO and owner of Swell Spark. “We're excited to be part of the historic downtown as well as being connected with Manhattan Town Center. Our grand opening is a big deal for Sinkers Lounge, and we can't wait to have you all come over and join the party in Manhattan. It's going to be a blast!”&nbsp;

Sinkers Lounge features 9 mini golf holes and 18 tabletop golf holes. The tabletop golf is a cross between shuffleboard and mini-golf.

The menu features shareable items, such as tatchos, flatbreads and donut holes, as well as a signature cocktail, the 'Wet Willie' which includes&nbsp;McQueen and the Violet Fog gin lemonade, and a splash of iced tea.

“Sinkers Lounge Manhattan isn't just a spot; it's a happy place where folks gather, celebrate and dive into some serious good times. Can't wait to see you all there making memories,” said Baysinger.

🎙: Little Apple Bites: A Plate Full of All American Hotdogs

Kansas children are learning more about the wheat grown in their communities and loving eating more whole grain-rich foods, thanks to a federal grant that is enabling school districts and daycares across the state to purchase equipment and source locally produced flour.

According to the requirements for USDA’s National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, which sets guidelines for the nation’s feeding programs for K-12 students, 80 percent of weekly grains offered at lunch and breakfast must be considered whole grain-rich. Whole grain-rich foods are defined as foods containing at least 50 percent whole grains and the remaining grains must be enriched. Under the Child and Adult Care Food Program, the USDA program that provides reimbursements for daycares and other qualifying programs, meals must include one whole grain item daily.

“The impact of Child Nutrition program operators to improve the quality of grain foods served, access to local food sources, agricultural education and appealing whole grain recipe development is to be commended,” said Cindy Falk, nutrition educator for Kansas Wheat. “It is a win, win for students' health and nutrition needs, local wheat farmers and communities.”

In 2022, the Kansas Department of Education received a USDA Farm to School grant to support the planning, development and implementation of farm to school programs. The department’s Child Nutrition and Wellness program — which works to help incorporate local foods in meals and snacks — divided the grant into sub-grants of $100,000 to 12 Child Nutrition Program sponsors, which included school, childcare and summer meal programs. The funding facilitated equipment purchases so these programs could utilize locally milled, whole grain flour as well as new whole grain recipes and culinary training for food service staff on how to bake with whole grain flour.

“We partnered with the Kansas Wheat Commission to improve access to local foods, specifically local flour, in Kansas Child Nutrition Programs through comprehensive farm-to-school programming that includes local procurement and agricultural education efforts,” said Barb Depew, RD, LD, Farm to Plate project director for the Kansas State Department of Education.

At a recent quarterly meeting of the Farm to Plate project, the grant recipients shared an update about the equipment they purchased and how they are incorporating whole grain foods into their programs.

“It was exciting to learn about the diversity of programs across the state and the children they are feeding,” Falk said. “The primary goals include improving the quality of grain foods served, expanding freshly baked menu items and increasing access to local foods.”

Starting with a direct farm connection, students in Greeley County grew white wheat on the school campus for USD 200, which they harvested and cleaned with the help of a local elevator. Christina Marquardt, the district’s nutrition services manager, reported the grain mill the district purchased is being used to grind those wheat kernels into whole wheat flour for breads, rolls, garlic bread and hamburger buns to feed 200 K-12th students — using 25 pounds of whole grain flour per week.

Other grant recipients purchased equipment for their school kitchens. According to Food Service Director Laura Fails, USD 320 in Wamego purchased two oven racks and a second 40-quart mixer bowl. The purchases allow for multiple menu items to be produced at the same time with less labor and more output. Overall, the staff serves between 1,100 and 1,300 students per day.

“We have been baking for years with Farmer Direct Foods stone-ground whole white wheat flour and the staff makes all their breads from scratch,” Fails said. “A student favorite is their rich 100% whole wheat chocolate cake and students do not realize that it is a whole grain product.”

Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 also used the grain to purchase locally produced flour and equipment. Stephanie Smith, child nutrition director, sourced Willie’s Pride whole wheat flour and bread flour from the K-State Department of Grain Science and Industry’s mill. They also used funds to purchase a dough divider and rounder, which is used for pizza crust, hamburger buns and rolls. Every morning they serve breakfast bread to about 1,200 children, followed by 3,800 lunches.

“We have already purchased 4,500 pounds of local flour this year,” Smith shared. “We are looking forward to baking up more delicious homemade menu items utilizing local products.”

The new equipment and flour purchases are a win-win combination across the state. Jordan Back, food service manager at Oswego USD 504, reported their new 60-quart mixer helps them serve three to four homemade bread items per week, including hamburger buns. Back noted they are sourcing Hudson Cream Flour from Stafford County Flour Mills, which he says is of fantastic quality.

“Although our recipe is 60 percent whole wheat flour and 40 percent white flour, the students and adults cannot identify it as whole grain bread,” shared Back. “Kids love it and we’ve already seen about a 10 percent increase in our participation, and I genuinely believe a lot of it has to do with the homemade bread items that we’ve introduced.”

Other districts are expanding the variety of products they are preparing, including USD 445 in Coffeyville.

“The staff is so happy with our new equipment and proud of what they are doing,” said Casey Worden, child nutrition services director. “While the grant was important for the children, it also makes the staff proud of the variety of foods they are preparing like hot pockets, coffee cake, garlic knots, waffles and muffins incorporating local berries.”

Beyond school districts, other providers used the sub-grants to encourage the use of local products, instill a love of baking and teach life skills. Child Care Links is a network of daycare home providers in 22 counties. Director Beth Carlton reported 10 home providers received bread kits, which included a mixer, baking utensils and pans. That equipment was used to involve daycare children in making biscuits, pancakes and pizza.

“You know, sometimes just sitting at the desk, we do not always realize the impact that it’s making until photos come across,” said Carlton, “And it really does make your day and remind you why you’re doing the work that you do, and it boosts your motivation to keep going.”

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged domestic battery in Manhattan.

Just before 2a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for domestic battery involving a 56-year-old woman as the victim and a man she knew as the suspect, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Police arrested 42-year-old Eric Fisher of Bucklin, Kansas on probable cause offenses of aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, criminal threat, and aggravated intimidation of a witness.

 Fisher was issued a total bond of $250,000 and was confined at the time of this report. Due to the nature of the crime reported (domestic) no additional information will be released.

SW Kansas man accused of domestic battery in Manhattan

SALINA —&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;has announced Bill Genereux, professor in the department of integrated studies, as this year's recipient of the Rex McArthur Family Faculty Award for excellence in teaching and research.

Genereux has been a faculty member at K-State Salina since 2004 and instructs classes for the campus's computer systems technology, digital media technology and web development technology degrees.

"I am honored and humbled to be receiving the Rex McArthur Family Faculty Award,"&nbsp;Genereux said.&nbsp;"I looked at the list of past recipients of this award, and many of them are mentors and have encouraged me in my career. To think that I have received the same award as people that I look up to is a humbling experience. With this, I hope to be able to help other instructors win awards and advance their careers."

Some of Genereux's interest in technology was developed in the late 1980s while in the Navy. One of his first experiences with computer networks was helping to install a local area network for Macs and PCs aboard the U.S. Battleship Missouri,&nbsp;a skill that he still uses today.

Much of what he teaches involves instilling technology literacy in students and helping them learn more about working and living in a digital world. More and more of his instruction now consists of using cutting-edge technologies for telling stories to prepare students to be at the forefront of technological innovations.

While Genereux enjoys teaching students, he also finds the time to research how technology impacts society and helps students gain a constructive, helpful and optimistic vision of what it means to be a human being in the digital age.

He is interested in learning and writing about what we are giving up by letting machines and AI do the creative things that people enjoy doing,&nbsp;such as drawing or making art.&nbsp;According to Genereux,&nbsp;while the computer might be more efficient and&nbsp;can&nbsp;save time, creating art is ultimately a human activity to be enjoyed by humans.

"Much of what I have learned in studying for my doctorate is how technological advances cut both ways,"&nbsp;said Genereux.&nbsp;"It gives society something that is cool but also takes something else away at the same time,&nbsp;and sometimes we tend to downplay the bad side of that.

Genereux added that he&nbsp;wants&nbsp;his&nbsp;students to think about the technology they adopt and what they are trying to achieve.

"If you want to be in the field of technology," he said,&nbsp;"you must be a lifelong learner, or else it will move right out from under your feet,&nbsp;and what you know will become obsolete."

Genereux, who lives in&nbsp;Clyde,&nbsp;earned an associate degree from Cloud County in 1997, a bachelor's degree in computer science from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1999, a master's degree in internetworking and telecommunications from Fort Hays State University in 2005,&nbsp;and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with a technology education emphasis in 2015 from K-State.

Genereux named 2023 recipient of K-State Salina's McArthur Family Faculty Award 

WABAUNSEE COUNTY&nbsp; —Law enforcement authorities are investigating another report of cattle theft in Kansas.

A reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest of those who stole more than a dozen calves and a cow from a rancher near Wamego, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff.

The livestock was stolen from Dan Oeding approximately 5 miles southeast of Wamego on Oct. 10. Livestock missing include&nbsp;Black Angus or Wagyu calves, one red calf and one Black Angus cow.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Wabaunsee County Sheriff at 785-765-3323.

In August, Reno County Sheriff's Office said Circle H Cattle Company reported fifteen 400 to 500 pound calves stolen from the area of US 50 and Sterling Road, according to a social media report. The cattle went missing sometime between July 29, and August 6.

In mid-July, the Kansas Livestock Associated reported 17-head of 200-350 pound calves were stolen ten miles northeast of Atwood, according to a media release from the Rawlins County sheriff's office. The calves&nbsp; carried fresh brands of V arrow high on the right hip.

In April, the Sheridan County Sheriff's Department asked for the public's assistance in a case involving eighty 80 head of cattle missing from South of Hoxie, Kansas.

More cattle thefts reported in Kansas 

MANHATTAN - On Wednesday morning, Governor Laura Kelly hosted a Healthy Workers, Healthy Economy tour roundtable in Manhattan, where the discussion was focused on how expanding Medicaid would benefit the Kansas agriculture industry.

Concerns about the current healthcare issues including long wait times, and lack of mental health resources were the focus of the discussion between farmers, ranchers and legislators participating in the roundtable.

“Agriculture is the backbone of the Kansas economy, yet our farmers and ranchers often face unnecessary obstacles to accessing essential care,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Expanding Medicaid would protect rural hospitals and lower healthcare costs for everyone – including ag businesses –so our agriculture industry and economy can continue to flourish.”&nbsp;

Unofficial 2023 Riley County General Election Results

MANHATTAN - Two Kansas State University veterinary medicine students were chosen for the distinguished Coyote Rock Ranch Scholarship from The Foundation for the Horse.

Anne Brien and Bailey Fritz were chosen as two of only four recipients chosen for the $75,000 scholarship, which is awarded to the top veterinary school students dedicated to equine medicine.

The winners were selected for their academic excellence, leadership and long-term goals in equine medicine.&nbsp;

"Anne and Bailey are both stellar students who show incredible future potential as researchers and clinicians," said James Roush, associate dean of academic programs and student success in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>. "As an associate dean and one of their instructors, I have followed and am in awe of what they have already accomplished in their careers. The K-State College of Veterinary Medicine is proud to be represented this year by two deserving recipients selected from a large national pool for such a prestigious and competitive award."

The Foundation for the Horse is a charitable organization, based in Lexington, Kentucky.&nbsp;

The awards will be presented during the American Association of Equine Practitioners(AAEP) annual convention in San Diego on November 30th.

The 4 scholarship recipients were chosen from 47 applicants, the other two recipients are studying at the University of Georgia and the University of California, Davis.

Bailey Fritz is from Westmoreland, and started her veterinary experience in the K-State student chapter of the AAEP, where she has served as president, expanding lab topics and organizing an equine mentorship group.

Fritz plans to complete an equine surgical residency following completion of her veterinary degree, and will pursue a dual clinical and research position focusing on equine pain and soft tissue injuries.

"I am so thankful for the incredible generosity of the Coyote Rock Ranch team and the Foundation for the Horse," Fritz said. “Their investment in the equine profession impacts so many lives; it was a huge honor to have been selected for this award among so many excellent candidates."

Anne Brien is from Rolla, North Dakota, and has been actively engaged within the equine veterinary community throughout her college career.

Brien has served as the vice-president for the K-State student chapter of the AAEP and has managed social media accounts, organized events and additional learning opportunities.

Brien has also gained connections with equine professional across the nation and attended the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event gaining practical experience at the event.

"I am so grateful for the generosity and support those at the Coyote Rock Ranch and the Foundation for the Horse have shown me and so many other aspiring equine veterinarians," Brien said. "The Coyote Rock Ranch Scholarship has helped me immensely to be better prepared financially for life and my career following graduation. RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7a.m. Monday in Riley County.

A 2020 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Thomas Reust, 51, of Manhattan and a&nbsp; 2005 Suzuki Boulevard driven by Albert Huerta, 57, of Manhattan, crashed near the intersection of Murray Road and Skyway Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported Huerta to Via Christi for treatment of his injuries. The RCPD released no additional details.

Manhattan man injured after SUV, motorcycle crash

TOPEKA, Nov. 6, 2023 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Kansas State Director Christy Davis today announced that Rural Development is awarding $4.21 million in grants to help agricultural producers and rural small business owners make energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy investments to lower energy costs, generate new income and strengthen the resiliency of their operations.

“Rural Development is ensuring small businesses in rural Kansas are part of the clean energy economy,” Christy Davis said. “The investments announced today expand access to renewable energy infrastructure and help Kansans save money on their energy costs.”

These Kansas projects are part of a larger national announcement which includes 44 other states and one territory. The Department is awarding these loans and grants through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).

&nbsp; · A $233,856 grant will help purchase and install a 201.6-kilowatt solar array for&nbsp;Pestinger Distribution Company Inc. of Salina.&nbsp;The project is estimated to replace 284,835 kilowatt hours per year, enough energy to power 26 homes. Pestinger Distribution currently has 38 employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;

· An $11,987 grant will help purchase and install an 8.6-kilowatt rooftop solar system for CTB West 15th LLC of Emporia. The project will replace 13,416 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, over 100 percent of the company's electricity use, and enough to power more than one home.

· A $448,440 grant will help purchase and install 149-kilowatt total in solar arrays for Carrico Implement Company Inc. in Beloit, Hays, and Ellsworth. The project is estimated to annually replace 862,996 kilowatt hours, enough energy to power 81 homes. Carrico Implement has 90 employees.

· A $79,914 grant will help purchase and install replacement energy efficient refrigeration and freezers at Clasen LLC's Gene's Heartland Foods store in Eudora. The project is expected to save 170,912 kilowatt hours per year, which is 25.4 percent of the facility's usage, enough to power 16 homes. The project is expected to save the company $17,785 per year in electrical costs.

· A $55,600 grant will help purchase and install a 64.2-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for of Jayco Vent Valve Inc. in Parsons. The project is expected to replace 71,585 kilowatt hours per year, 74 percent of Jayco Vent Valve's usage and enough energy to power six homes. The project is expected to save the company $10,659 per year in electrical costs.

· A $20,000 grant will help purchase and install a 15.5-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Town Royal LLC of Emporia. The project is expected to replace 23,876 kilowatt hours per year, nearly half of Town Royal's usage and enough energy to power two homes. The project is expected to save the company $3,106 per year in electrical costs.

· A $79,987 grant will help purchase and install a 67.1-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Blue Water SC LLC in Emporia. The project is expected to replace 87,822 kilowatt hours per year, which is 91.6 percent of Blue Water’s usage and enough to power eight homes. The project is expected to save the company $14,246 per year in electrical costs.

· A $48,787 grant will help purchase and install a 36.6-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Kress LLC in Emporia. The project is expected to replace 55,840 kilowatt hours per year, 51.3 percent of Kress's usage and enough to power five homes. The project is expected to save the company $8,090 per year in electrical costs.

· A $23,284 grant will help purchase and install a 21.56-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Carl’s Sales &amp; Service Inc. in Thayer. The project is expected to replace 33,331 kilowatt hours per year, which is 99.8 percent of Carl’s Sales &amp; Service's usage and enough to power three homes. The project is expected to save the company $5,322 per year in electrical costs.

· A $247,250 grant will help purchase and install a 308-kilowatt solar array for Central Electropolishing Company Inc. of Anthony. The project is estimated to replace 421,670 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power 39 homes. Central Electropolishing currently has 29 employees.

· A $269,120 grant will help purchase and install a 278-kilowatt solar array for BMG of Kansas Inc. in Hesston. The project is estimated to replace 362,700 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power 34 homes. BMG of Kansas currently has 52 employees.

· A $60,704 grant will help to purchase and install a 37.8-kilowatt solar array for Reno Fabricating &amp; Sales Co. Inc. of Hutchinson. · A $50,494 grant will help purchase and install energy efficient refrigeration units for LaDow's Market of Lebanon. This project will realize $4,978 per year in savings and will replace 56,731 kilowatt hours, enough electricity to power five homes.

· A $22,300 grant will help purchase and install a 16.28-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Casey Andersen of Gove County. This project will realize $2,335 per year in savings and will replace 21,358 kilowatt hours, which is enough energy to power two homes.

 </figure>TOPEKA, Nov. 6, 2023 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Kansas State Director Christy Davis today announced that Rural Development is awarding $4.21 million in grants to help agricultural producers and rural small business owners make energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy investments to lower energy costs, generate new income and strengthen the resiliency of their operations.“Rural Development is ensuring small businesses in rural Kansas are part of the clean energy economy,” Christy Davis said. “The investments announced today expand access to renewable energy infrastructure and help Kansans save money on their energy costs.”These Kansas projects are part of a larger national announcement which includes 44 other states and one territory. The Department is awarding these loans and grants through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP).The details of the Kansas projects are:&nbsp; · A $233,856 grant will help purchase and install a 201.6-kilowatt solar array for&nbsp;Pestinger Distribution Company Inc. of Salina.&nbsp;The project is estimated to replace 284,835 kilowatt hours per year, enough energy to power 26 homes. Pestinger Distribution currently has 38 employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;· An $11,987 grant will help purchase and install an 8.6-kilowatt rooftop solar system for CTB West 15th LLC of Emporia. The project will replace 13,416 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, over 100 percent of the company's electricity use, and enough to power more than one home.· A $448,440 grant will help purchase and install 149-kilowatt total in solar arrays for Carrico Implement Company Inc. in Beloit, Hays, and Ellsworth. The project is estimated to annually replace 862,996 kilowatt hours, enough energy to power 81 homes. Carrico Implement has 90 employees.· A $79,914 grant will help purchase and install replacement energy efficient refrigeration and freezers at Clasen LLC's Gene's Heartland Foods store in Eudora. The project is expected to save 170,912 kilowatt hours per year, which is 25.4 percent of the facility's usage, enough to power 16 homes. The project is expected to save the company $17,785 per year in electrical costs.· A $55,600 grant will help purchase and install a 64.2-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for of Jayco Vent Valve Inc. in Parsons. The project is expected to replace 71,585 kilowatt hours per year, 74 percent of Jayco Vent Valve's usage and enough energy to power six homes. The project is expected to save the company $10,659 per year in electrical costs.· A $20,000 grant will help purchase and install a 15.5-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Town Royal LLC of Emporia. The project is expected to replace 23,876 kilowatt hours per year, nearly half of Town Royal's usage and enough energy to power two homes. The project is expected to save the company $3,106 per year in electrical costs.· A $79,987 grant will help purchase and install a 67.1-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Blue Water SC LLC in Emporia. The project is expected to replace 87,822 kilowatt hours per year, which is 91.6 percent of Blue Water’s usage and enough to power eight homes. The project is expected to save the company $14,246 per year in electrical costs.· A $48,787 grant will help purchase and install a 36.6-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Kress LLC in Emporia. The project is expected to replace 55,840 kilowatt hours per year, 51.3 percent of Kress's usage and enough to power five homes. The project is expected to save the company $8,090 per year in electrical costs.· A $23,284 grant will help purchase and install a 21.56-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for Carl’s Sales &amp; Service Inc. in Thayer. The project is expected to replace 33,331 kilowatt hours per year, which is 99.8 percent of Carl’s Sales &amp; Service's usage and enough to power three homes. The project is expected to save the company $5,322 per year in electrical costs.· A $247,250 grant will help purchase and install a 308-kilowatt solar array for Central Electropolishing Company Inc. of Anthony. The project is estimated to replace 421,670 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power 39 homes. Central Electropolishing currently has 29 employees.· A $269,120 grant will help purchase and install a 278-kilowatt solar array for BMG of Kansas Inc. in Hesston. The project is estimated to replace 362,700 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power 34 homes. BMG of Kansas currently has 52 employees.· A $79,995 grant will help purchase and install a 62.72-kilowatt solar array for Barkman Honey LLC of Hillsboro. The project is estimated to replace 98,633 kilowatt hours per year, enough energy to power nine homes. Barkman Honey currently has 185 employees.· A $26,117 grant will help purchase and install a 21.33-kilowatt solar array for Carl Prather of Beloit. The project is estimated to replace 28,560 kilowatt hours per year, enough energy to power two homes. Carl Prather currently has one employee.· A $115,920 grant will help purchase and install 41-kilowatts in solar arrays for Daniel William Rempe of Corning. The project is estimated to replace 182,673 kilowatt hours per year. Enough energy to power 17 homes. Rempe currently has one employee.· A $46,898 grant will help purchase and install a 50-kilowatt solar array for Yoder Metal &amp; Post Frame Building Supplies LLC of Haven. The project is estimated to replace 79,073 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power seven homes. Ackerman LLC of Osborne County. This project will realize $1,791.30 per year in savings and will replace 20,161 kilowatt hours per year, which is enough energy to power nearly two homes.The USDA continues to accept REAP applications and will hold funding competitions quarterly through Sept. 30, 2024.
