HUTCHINSON, Kan. — AAA says 55.4 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period from the five-day period from Wednesday, November 22 to Sunday, November 26.

"That's an increase of 2.3% over last year," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "The number of people driving will also be up slightly with a 1.7% increase to 49.1 million Americans driving to their destinations."

This year’s Thanksgiving the third-highest Thanksgiving forecast since AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2000. The top two years were 2005 and 2019, respectively.&nbsp;

"People will also be flying," Steward said. "4.7 million people will fly over the Thanksgiving holiday. That's up 6.6% compared to last year."

That's the highest number of Thanksgiving air travelers since 2005. Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving are the busiest air travel days ahead of the holiday and the most expensive.

"All methods of transportation are up, especially domestic travel," Steward said. "The average cost of flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises are all down here in the U.S. this holiday season."

Drivers in this part of the country will likely be paying less for gas than last Thanksgiving, as well, when the national average was $3.58. This year, the national average peaked in mid-August at $3.87 and has been coming down since, despite global tensions causing ripples through the oil market. The Kansas gas price average is $3.03 a gallon as of Saturday, Nov. 18.&nbsp;

Riley County Arrest Report November 18

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.9% in October. This is an increase from 2.8% in September and a decrease from 3.0% in October 2022.

“There was a small increase in the unemployment rate for Kansas, edging up to 2.9% in October,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “However, there was no change in the labor force participation rate at 66.7%, which remains significantly higher than the U.S. labor force participation rate at 62.7%.” 

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 3,200 from September. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobsincreased by 2,400 over the month, while government increased by 800.

The unemployment rate in Riley County is up from 2.6 percent in September to 2.8 percent in October. The rate is also up slightly in Wabaunsee, Pottawatomie and Geary counties.&nbsp;

Since October 2022 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 15,600. This change is due to an increase of 8,300 private sector jobs and an increase of 7,300 government jobs.

MANHATTAN - On Thursday morning, more than 30 residents and property owners from the Keats area attended the Riley County Commission meeting where commissioners discussed whether the Keats sewer system project could still be considered financially feasible.

Fifteen community members provided testimony about the project with fourteen of them voicing concern over the expense of the project and lack of transparent communication to property owners about the financial impact of the project.

Since 2021, the estimated costs for the Keats Sewer District project have escalated from a range of $3,669,405 to $3,994,900 to a new estimated range of $4,146, 330 to $4,737,555 in 2023.

This is an increase of 13% to 18.59% between 2021 to 2023.

<a href="https://www.ksrevisor.org/statutes/chapters/ch19/019_027a_0006.html">K.S.A. 19-27a06</a> requires the Board of County Commissioners to host a public hearing to determine if the Keats Sewer District remains financially feasible after the cost of the project increased by more than 10% of the original estimate.

Residents expressed concern over the expense which will be added to the property tax assessment for each parcel as a special assessment.

For some property owners, because of the way the parcels were historically divided, they have been informed by the county that even if the lot is currently undeveloped and due to regulations will have to remain undeveloped a sewer hook-up will still be required to the parcel as part of this installation.

Riley County Commissioners discussed amongst themselves whether they felt the project remains financially feasible following the public comment section.

Commissioner Greg McKinley moved the Board find the Keats Sewer Project is still feasible when taking in the estimated cost increases into the account. Commissioner Kathryn Focke seconded the motion.

Both Commissioners McKinley and Focke voted in favor of the Keats Sewer Project remaining financially feasible, while Commissioner John Ford voted against this motion.&nbsp;

Riley Co. Comm. says Keats sewer project financially feasible

Kansas Department of Transportation and KHP Vehicle-deer crashes can happen any day of the year on Kansas roadways. Across the state, 37% of all single-vehicle crashes in 2022 involved a collision with a deer. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports six people were killed and 575 people were injured in collisions with deer in 2022.

These crashes greatly increase from now until the end of the year because of deer breeding season, with November typically the peak time.

This is why KDOT, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, AAA Kansas and the Kansas Turnpike Authority are joining to raise awareness and help decrease vehicle-deer crashes.

“If a deer enters the roadway in front of your car, it is best to hit the animal and not swerve to avoid it,” said KHP Captain Candice Breshears. “We find more serious crashes occur when you swerve to miss the deer, potentially losing control of your vehicle, leaving the road or veering into oncoming traffic.”

Roadway safety officials suggest drivers:

• Be especially watchful at dawn and dusk when deer are more active.

• If you see one deer, expect others, as deer seldom travel alone.

• Be alert and reduce speeds near wooded areas or green spaces and near water sources&nbsp;such as streams and ponds.

• Deer crossing signs show areas where high numbers of vehicle-deer collisions have&nbsp;occurred in the past; but they can happen on any roadway, including city streets.

• Do not swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Motorists could then veer into oncoming&nbsp;traffic, run off the road, hit objects or overturn.

• Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic and scan for the reflective&nbsp;eyes of deer.

• If a collision occurs, move the vehicle to the roadway’s shoulder. Then, if possible, call law enforcement – KHP dispatch at *47, the Kansas Turnpike at *KTA or local law enforcement at 911.

• Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on, whether it is light or dark outside.

• Remain in the vehicle with your seat belt fastened to be better protected.

• Contact your insurance company to report any vehicle damage.

Shawn Steward, Public and Government Affairs Manager for AAA Kansas, said deer can be unpredictable, so even the best drivers are at risk.

“In addition to the inconvenience of your vehicle damage, the cost of repairs may put a serious dent in your wallet,” Steward said. “AAA insurance statistics indicate that the average claim in Kansas for an animal strike in 2022 was almost $7,000 – up more than 60% in just five years.”

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer or other animal resulting in personal injury or property damage totaling $1,000 or more is required to immediately report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.

Nadia Marji, Chief of Public Affairs and Engagement Officer for KDWP, said a common question to the agency is if a hunting license is needed to personally take a deer carcass from a crash scene.

“KDWP has a process in place for this through salvage tags,” Marji said. “A salvage tag is required to remove all or part of a deer carcass from an accident site and can be issued by a KDWP game warden, KHP trooper or sheriff’s deputy.”

Increase roadway safety this fall and throughout the year by staying alert, obeying posted laws and eliminating distractions while driving. Always wear a seat belt and use appropriate child safety seats, every trip, every time.

Riley County Arrest Report November 17

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged sex crime.

Just after 2p.m. Thursday police arrested 32-year-old Luis Cortijo Abreu, 3 of Puerto Rico, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Abreu was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. The original charge was for rape. Cortijo Abreu was issued a total bond of $60,000 and is no longer in custory, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;

My guest on Coffee Talk this time is State Representative Nathan Butler (68th District) who will begin his second legislative session in early January.&nbsp; In addition to his duties as State Representative, he served in the U.S. Army retiring at the end of 20 years at the rank of Major; is a Pastor; and a real estate agent.

In our interview, he  talked to me about about the make-up of the 68th District, it's wide-ranging mix of small cities and towns spread through sections of Geary, Riley and Morris counties.  He also outlines bills he worked on in his first session and those he will continue to track in the new session beginning in early January 2024. Rep. Butler also addresses some of the inner-workings of the Kansas Legislature and its hectic pace.

RILEY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

A 2007 Chevy Tahoe driven by Darion Smith, 24, crashed with a gray 2007 Honda Accord driven by&nbsp; 23-year-old Linda Reyes-Santiago&nbsp;near the intersection of Tuttle Creek Boulevard and Walters Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported a female passenger in the Honda to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Police cited Smith for no driver’s license and failure to yield at an intersection.&nbsp;

The RCPD did not report the driver’s home cities.

Woman hospitalized after crash with unlicensed driver

RILEY COUNTY —A Manhattan man reported missing has been found and is safe, according to a statement from the Riley County Police Department.

RILEY COUNTY – The&nbsp;Riley County Police Department requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a missing Manhattan man, according to a media release from the KBI.

The whereabouts of 77-year-old Ray G. Newman are unknown, and public assistance is requested to help locate him.

Ray is likely driving a silver 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe bearing Kansas tag 815NXM. The vehicle has white sticker decals in its rear window, and one reads “German Shepherd Dad.” He was last seen around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, driving east toward Manhattan, Kansas from Riley, Kansas, near the 6400 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd., in Manhattan.

Ray is described as a white male, approximately 5 foot 11 inches tall, and weighing around 180 pounds. He has hazel eyes and gray hair. He was last seen wearing a blue, long-sleeve pearl snap shirt, jeans and brown cowboy boots. Ray is displaying early signs of dementia.

KBI: Silver Alert canceled, Manhattan man found safe

The Community Coat Drive is underway and will continue through next Wednesday, November 22nd.

The coat drive sponsors are GCR and Foot Locker Corporate Services Center. There are several drop-off locations in Junction City, and drop-off locations in Manhattan and Abilene. The list of drop-off locations is on the flyer below. The Community Coat Drive accepts coats, jackets, gloves, hats, scarves and socks.

Casper Harold, is the man behind the coat drive and the leader in his GCR motorcycle organization.

“Being from here, I know there is a need for things like this,” Harold said. “This is like our fifth event for helping people out this year. I know there is a need, so this is why we do it.”

Harold said if you are uncomfortable dropping off items at any of the locations, you can call him, and he will pick up the items. The number to call is 785-210-6207.

Saturday November 25th is distribution day. The distribution will be at 602 N Washington St. in Junction City at Blue Restaurant. The distribution will be from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

“Anybody that needs anything is welcome to come through the door,” Casper Harold said. “ Everything is free. A free lunch will also be served.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran co-led a delegation that visited Israel this past weekend.

K-State cattle nutritionist explains how corn stalk bales can be a feed resource

When eating a salad, imagine how it might taste if all there was to eat were the stems of the plant. Not very appealing, right?&nbsp;

Similarly, cattle that are offered corn stalk bales to eat in place of hay also often find that to be less palatable, said Phillip Lancaster, beef cattle nutritionist for the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/11/10/sandhills-calving-corn-stalk-bales-mandatory-price-reporting/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, Lancaster said there is an increase of corn stalks being baled as a feed resource this year because of the shortage of hay and the decrease in pastures available for fall grazing due to a lack of moisture.

“Traditionally, grazing cattle in the late fall on harvested corn fields can be an option to extend the grazing season because cattle can eat the husks and leaves, which have a decent nutritional value,” Lancaster said. “However, this year farmers are baling up the corn stalks after they’ve harvested the crop, which leaves only the stalks that are lignified and indigestible.”

He said that when cattle are offered a corn stalk bale, they will consume the resource at a higher proportion of stalks than they would if they were just grazing the field.

“Producers feeding those bales will have quite a bit of wastage unless they grind them and add them to a mixed ration,” Lancaster said.

For producers who need to use this as a feed resource, Lancaster said they need to supplement the cattle with protein.

He added: “For cows going into their third trimester this winter, their maintenance requirements are higher so along with protein they will also need to be supplemented with energy as well.”

Additionally, there is a potential health concern with bales that were made from a failed corn crop when fed to the cattle, Lancaster said.

“If nitrogen fertilizer was put on the crop in the spring and then it failed, the plant may still be holding that nitrogen,” Lancaster said.

In that case, producers will need to test the bales for nitrates, according to Lancaster.

Cattle Chat: Feeding corn stalk bales

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting in rural Pottawatomie County and have made an arrest.

Just after 6a.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence in the 4700 block of Blackjack Road in rural St. George,&nbsp; according to Sheriff Shane Jager.

First responders&nbsp; found an adult who had suffered a single gunshot wound. EMS transported the victim to a Topeka hospital.

During the investigation, deputies identified a suspect identified as 35-year-old Matthew R. Young of Rural Wamego. With the assistance of the Riley County Police Department, deputies located Young in Manhattan and arrested him on requested charges of Attempted Murder in second degree, according to Jager.

The sheriff's office did not release the name of the victim.

RILEY CO - Just after 4:30 on Monday, November 13th, emergency crews were dispatched to the 2100 block of Deep Creek Road for the report of a propane truck rollover crash.

When officers from Riley County Police Department arrived on scene they found a Wanklyn Oil Company propane truck had rolled into the ditch.

The truck was driven by 60-year-old, Lee Shoemaker of Saint George.

Shoemaker reported no serious injuries as a result of the crash.

Traffic was rerouted around the area for a short time as crews worked the scene and removed the propane truck from the scene.
