K-State draws TCU in first round of Big 12 Tournament 

The Manhattan Indians boys basketball team ( 15-7 ) will play Haysville-Campus ( 22-0 ) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the Class 6A State Basketball Tournament. The Indians are the eighth seed while Haysville-Campus is the number one seed in the tournament.

The rest of the pairings for the 6A boys find Blue Valley North ( 19-3 ) vs. Lawrence ( 18-4 ) on the same side of the bracket as Manhattan and Haysville-Campus. K-State was led by junior Cartier Diarra’s game-high 16 points, which marked the third straight game he has led in scoring, while junior Mike McGuirl and senior Xavier Sneed added 11 and 10 points, respectively. The team connected on just 36.2 percent from the field.</li><li>The loss was yet another disappointing one for the Wildcats, which has now lost 13 games by single digits (including 8 in Big 12 play) and 7 by 5 points or less. During the current 10-game skid, the team has lost 7 games by 10 points or less, including 6 by single digits. OSU won the first meeting, 64-59, in Manhattan on Feb. 11 to end a 4-game losing skid in the series and will be looking to sweep the regular-season series for the first time in the Big 12 round-robin era. The game will tip at 8:05 p.m., CT on ESPNU with Robert Ford (play-by-play) and Tim Welsh (analyst) on the call.</li><li>K-State saw its losing streak hit 9 games on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats battled No. 1/1 Kansas for the entire 40 minutes before falling 62-58 at Bramlage Coliseum. Big 12 Player of the Year candidate Devon Dotson scored a game-high 25 points, including 5 in a pivotal 8-0 run late in the second half, to push the Jayhawks winning streak to 14 games. During the current 9-game skid, the team has lost 6 games by 10 points or less, including 5 by single digits. The 12 losses by single digits are the most in a single season since the 2002-03 team lost 13 games by single digits.</li><li>After losses to No. 2/2 Baylor (66-85) and No. 1/1 Kansas (58-62, K-State played the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in consecutive games for just the second time in school history and the first time since losing to No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Michigan at the 1964 Final Four at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Wildcats are just the fifth Division I team since 1996-97 to play the nation’s top two teams in the same week and the first since West Virginia in 2016.</li><li>During the 9-game losing streak, K-State has allowed opponents to average 70 points on 47.2 percent shooting, including 37.8 percent from 3-point range, and 73.5 percent from the free throw line, while averaging just 60.9 points on 40.4 percent shooting, including 29 percent from long range, and 64 percent from the free throw line. The team is averaging 10.2 assists on 21.0 made field goals with 14.2 turnovers per game, while opponents are averaging 14 assists on 22.9 made field goals with 15.4 turnovers per game. Senior Xavier Sneed is averaging 12.8 points during that span, but is connecting on just 32.1 percent (34-of-106) from the field, including 26 percent (13-of-50) from 3-point range.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Injuries have been a big part of K-State’s season, as 4 players have combined to miss 53 games, which has caused coach Bruce Weber to use 9 starting lineups. The 9 lineups are the most since using 11 in 2014-15 with at least one true freshman starting in 26 of 29 games, including rookies DaJuan Gordon and Montavious Murphy starting together 8 times, including in 7 of the last 11 games, and Antonio Gordon starting the games against Texas (2/22/20) and No. 1/1 Baylor (2/25/20). Kansas State plays at Oklahoma State Wednesday night

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State safeties coach&nbsp;Joe Klanderman&nbsp;has been promoted to defensive coordinator, while cornerbacks coach&nbsp;Van Malone&nbsp;has added the titles of assistant head coach and passing game coordinator, head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;announced Monday.

Klanderman, who has coached all three levels of the defense during his career, will serve as a defensive coordinator for a second time after holding the position from 2007 to 2013 at his alma mater, Minnesota State. He will continue to tutor the Wildcat safeties, as Klieman will search for a new linebackers coach to replace Scottie Hazelton, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Michigan State.

“Joe is one of the best defensive coaches I have ever been around, and he is ready for this role,” Klieman said. “In addition to already having coordinator experience, Joe knows our defense as well as anyone, and it is important to continue to develop our players and keep them in our system. We appreciate what Scottie did for our program this past year and hate to see him leave, but we are excited about our future with Coach Klanderman and the rest of our defensive staff.”

Klanderman and Malone were vital parts of a defensive staff that helped the Wildcats rank first in the nation in third down defense at 28.0%, which was the best by K-State since at least 2003. The Wildcats also ranked 15th nationally in first down defense (224) and put together a No. 2 ranking in the Big 12 in pass defense (202.9 yards per game, their best ranking in the conference since in five seasons. Additionally, K-State allowed just 21.4 points per game in 2019, its best mark since 2003.

“Van is a veteran coach who has immediately had a big impact on our program and student-athletes,” Klieman said. “Not only is he one of the most respected defensive coaches in college football, but his experience, leadership and development of young men is unmatched.”

Under Klanderman’s guidance,&nbsp;Denzel Goolsby&nbsp;earned 2019 Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors, the first Wildcat safety to do so since 2016.

<a>“I’m so appreciative to have the opportunity to expand my role in something much bigger than myself,” Klanderman said. “We’re going to work tirelessly to put a product on the field that Wildcat fans can be proud of. Klanderman came to Manhattan from North Dakota State after helping the Bison win four national titles in his five seasons on staff, which included a perfect 15-0 record in 2018. The NDSU defense was a major factor in its undefeated run as the Bison ranked first nationally with 23 interceptions, including six by safety Robbie Grimsley and five by safety James Hendricks.

Overall, the Bison ranked in the top five in scoring defense each of his five years on staff, including a No. 2 ranking in 2017 (11.6 points per game) and No. 3 spot in 2018 (12.6). His secondary has also helped NDSU rank in the top 11 in passing yards allowed in four of the five years, with a No. 3 national ranking in 2017 (147.9 yards per game).

Malone hit the ground running in 2019 by tutoring&nbsp;AJ Parker, a junior who picked up Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades despite missing the final five games of the year due to injury. At the time of his injury, Parker was tied for second in the Big 12 and 17th nationally in interceptions.

Malone came to Manhattan after one year working as a defensive quality control coach at Mississippi State, helping the Bulldogs earn an 8-4 record and a No. 1 national ranking in scoring defense and a No. 3 mark in total defense.

Prior to Mississippi State, Malone was the defensive coordinator at SMU for three seasons, including the 2017 campaign when he was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National FBS Assistant Coach of the Year. That year, he tutored three All-AAC performers, including Justin Lawler, who was the conference’s leader in sacks.

Malone coached Lawler to his first All-AAC honor in 2016, a year he was joined on the list by cornerback Horace Richardson and safety Darrion Millines. Malone’s 2016 defense was statistically one of the 10 most improved in college football. The Mustangs ranked seventh nationally in interceptions per game and forced 26 turnovers overall. In fact, two of Malone’s three defenses finished in the top 20 in defensive turnovers.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Three Kansas State men’s basketball players were selected to Academic All-Big 12 Team on Thursday, including two on the First Team, as the league office announced its 34-member all-academic teams.

Senior&nbsp;Pierson McAtee&nbsp;and junior&nbsp;Cartier Diarra&nbsp;were named to the league’s 22-member first team, which consists of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Junior&nbsp;Mike McGuirl&nbsp;was selected to the 12-member second team, which honors those with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.19.

Both McAtee and McGuirl repeated their academic accolades from a year ago, while Diarra received the honor for the first time in his career. McAtee was a first team selection for the third time, while McGuirl is a two-time honoree to the team after earning first team accolades in 2018-19. McGuirl (2018) was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as true freshmen.

In head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber’s&nbsp;tenure at K-State, he has now seen 16 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big 12 honors a total of 23 times. The individual honors continue another solid academic year for the Wildcats, as all three selections were among nine players named to the Fall 2019 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league men’s basketball team consisted of 19 first team members combined with 13 on the second team.&nbsp; First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests.&nbsp;&nbsp;Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.&nbsp; Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Football players from all ages can gain on-field instruction from head football coach, Chris Klieman, and the Wildcat coaching staff as Kansas State will host six camps over the summer months.

The K-State Football Camps will be held on Sunday, May 31; Friday, June 12; Saturday, June 13; Friday, June 19; and Friday July 31. Those camps are open to any and all entrants entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2020, as well as 2020 high school graduates and community-college players.

Each camp will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions with the morning focusing on those at the offensive and defensive line positions, while the afternoons will feature skill positions. Additionally, the camps on May 31 and June 13 will have an evening session to work with kickers, punters and long snappers.

In addition to the five regular camps, the Wildcats will also host a K-State Football Youth Camp on Sunday, June 14, for any and all campers enters grades 1-8 in the fall of 2020. Campers entering grades 1-4 will participate in the morning session, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while the afternoon session for grades 5-8 will run from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The cost for each camp is $50, which includes a t-shirt. After falling behind 37-29 less than 2 minutes into the second half after a 7-2 run by Texas Tech, K-State followed with its own run to rally to within 44-42 after a layup by junior&nbsp;Cartier Diarra&nbsp;with 10:10 to play. Diarra stole the ball on the next possession and had a breakaway dunk that would have tied it at 44-all, but the ball hit the rim on the attempted dunk and was rebounded by sophomore&nbsp;Kyler Edwards&nbsp;who then dished it to Moretti for a wide open 3-pointer for a 47-42 lead with 9:46 to play.

The 3-pointer by Moretti ignited the pivotal 8-2 run that flipped a narrow 44-42 lead into a 52-44 advantage, as head coach&nbsp;Bruce Weber&nbsp;called his final timeout with 6:44 remaining. Wildcats fall at Texas Tech

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Desmond Bane scored 17 points and TCU stopped a six-game losing streak with a 68-57 win over Kansas State. 

Bane scored all 12 of his second-half points from 3-point range and finished 5 of 10 from beyond the arc. That included the go-ahead shot with 6:30 remaining to start a 17-5 run to end the game. Xavier Sneed had 15 points for Kansas State. 

The Wildcats lost their fifth consecutive game and clinched a fourth losing Big 12 record in the past six years under coach Bruce Weber.

Jonathan Laurent had 11 points and Cameron McGriff provided 10 as the Cowboys picked up their first win against Kansas State since 2017 and now sit in a tie for ninth place in the conference with the Wildcats. 

Mike McGuirl led Kansas State with a season-high 16 points. It was the first conference road win of the season for Oklahoma State.&nbsp;
