Raymond Frances Power, 96, of Abilene, passed away on September 16, 2023, after a long, loving life.

Ray was born on July 26, 1927, in Guthrie, Oklahoma. After graduating from Guthrie High School, Ray enlisted in the US Army and spent a short time training as a paratrooper. After his military service, Ray married his high school sweetheart, Theda McCoy, in 1948 and settled in Guthrie. Ray and Theda welcomed three children: Sheridan Power, Susie Edberg (Dwight) and Ted Power (Leslie). They were married 57 years at the time of Theda’s passing in March 2006.In 1968, the Powers moved to Abilene, Kansas, where Ray worked in agriculture sales. At the age of 62, Ray found his calling in driving the school bus for the Abilene School District. He spent two decades building relationships with each child who rode his bus. It was Ray’s joy to know each rider by name and to watch from behind the steering wheel as they grew up. 

An avid sports fan all his life, he especially loved driving Abilene sports teams to and from their activities. He was always cheering on the athletes, not just in their sports but in life. Ray came to Christ through Alcoholics Anonymous in 1971 and actively supported many others seeking sobriety. He loved the Lord and was an active member of the Abilene United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing golf and watching professional sports, especially baseball. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His gentle style of friendship and encouragement was known to so many.

Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Theda, his parents, and three sisters. He is survived by his three children and four grandchildren—Steven Hall (Stacy), Lauren (Power) Denorfia (Chris), Edie (Hall) Ross (Seth) and Chandler Power (Mara Clippinger). He’s also survived by seven great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 3, at the Abilene United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the USD 435 Endowment Association. Donations made in Ray Power’s name will be used for K-12 bus trips. Donations also can be made to the Abilene United Methodist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After a long and courageous battle with cancer Mary Corah passed away at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City on September 18,2023. Mary was born in Grafton, North Dakota on September 29, 1944 to Ed and Marie (Mamie) Gudajtes. …. the second of their four children.

After graduating from Minto High School Mary attended North Dakota State University before entering a long career in the world of finance……. retiring after spending many years as the manager of the Kansas Farm Bureau Credit Union….and yes, she never could figure out why some people could not balance a checking account.

On October 24th, 1964 she married Larry Corah at the St Stanislaus Catholic church in Warsaw, North Dakota. Mary became very adept at moving as in their first 9 years of married life she lived in 12 different houses/apartments in 6 different states and two different countries…. never once asking the obvious question “why are we doing this” because she recognized these were valued career moves for Larry. …. finally in 1974 they settled in their long-time home in Manhattan, Kansas.

Mary had many interests……she never passed a quilt shop without stopping which resulted in 100’s of beautiful quilts either given to family or charity…. there never seemed to be a quilt organization or quilt retreat that didn’t attract her interest. Early in married she was an active bowler and frequently joined Welcome Wagon when a move brought her to a new town.

Doing volunteer work was important part of her life……for many years she worked weekly at the Seven Dolors Catholic Budget Shop, was active in numerous church organizations as she and Larry were long time members of the St Thomas More Catholic Church…..she served many years on the school board for the Manhattan Catholic school……and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention she never found a bridge game of cards not worthy of playing ……frequently spending many an afternoon during retirement years…..she also enjoyed a good K-State football game or a KSU Women’s basketball game.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother James, sisters-in-law Kathy and Susan Gudajtes, brother-in-law Paul Gourde and grandson Jack Estes.

Survivors include her husband Larry of nearly 59 years, four children daughter Michelle (Derek) Estes, Tom (Sally), Chad (Becca) and Mark……six grandchildren Luke. Morgan, Kaden, Madison, Tucker and Payton (Ward). She is also survived by sister Marge Gourde and brother John Gudajtes and numerous nieces and nephews.

The evening wake(visitation) will be held at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan on Sunday evening October 8th from 5:30-7 p.m.&nbsp; with a rosary and a short celebration of life starting at 7 p.m.. Funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. on October 9th at the St Thomas More Catholic Church, 2900 Kimball Avenue in Manhattan.

Donald John Bennett, 88, of Wamego, Kansas, died Monday, September 18, 2023, at his home. &nbsp;He was a life-long resident of the community.

Don was born May 22, 1935, in Flush, Kansas, the son of Maurice and Rosella (Lauer) Bennett. &nbsp;He attended local grade school and graduated in 1953 from Wamego High School.

Don worked fifty-one years for Wamego Floral. &nbsp;He helped raise and deliver bedding plants and flowers all over the country. He loved raising mums and poinsettias. &nbsp;He then worked for several years for 5-H Green House and then True Value Hardware. &nbsp;Don was very handy and was able to fix almost anything. &nbsp;While working for the hardware store, he was often sought out by customers not only because he knew where to find whatever they were looking for, but also because of his knowledge of how things worked.&nbsp;

Don loved to bowl and won many tournaments. &nbsp;He also loved to raise his garden and enjoyed the fruits of his labors. &nbsp;He was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and over the years served as an usher, lector, and server. &nbsp;He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

On May 11, 1957, in Wamego, Don married Ann Boyd. &nbsp;They shared over 66 years together and she now survives at their home.

Don is also survived by his children; Omar Bennett (Margarita Bautista), Topeka, Dianne Hall, Wamego, and Rob Bennett (Dawn Nogosek), Garden City; his grandchildren, Natalie Bennett, Chelsey Ellis, Andrew Bennett, Jacque Hastert, Tim Hall, Jr., Nathaniel Hall, Anthony Bennett, Redawn Bennett, Latisha Bennett, and Darlene Bennett; his great-grandchildren, Adler, Fiona, Olivia, Lily, Jerome and Violet. &nbsp; Don was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Emma Hastert, son-in-law, Timothy Hall, and his siblings, Joretta Varnadore, Wayne Bennett and Rita Dornbusch.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in Wamego. &nbsp;Father Mike Peterson will be officiating. &nbsp;The family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home. &nbsp;They suggest memorial contributions to either the American Cancer Association or the Alzheimer’s Association, and those may be sent in care of the funeral home. &nbsp;

Jonna Kaye Nichols, age 79, of St. George died September 13, 2023, at her home in St. George.

Jonna was born on September 6, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of John and Thelma Dawson.

Jonna was a Kansas native and graduated from East High School in Wichita, Kansas. After high school, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from WSU as a registered nurse. Jonna worked as a registered nurse in the oncology department for twelve years at St. Francis Medical Center. Concluding her career in oncology, she dedicated her time to home health care. Jonna traveled to provide exceptional healthcare to her patients all over the State of Kansas for fifteen years.

She enjoyed boating and fishing, spending many hours on Milford Lake with her son Christopher and his wife Rebecca. Most of all she loved her family and her grandchildren Connor, and Jonathan. She had a special place in her heart for her cats, she was a lover of animals, but especially horses. &nbsp;Jonna was compassionate and caring, dedicated, and always spoke her mind.

She is survived by her son, Christopher (Rebecca) Nichols, and her grandsons, Connor Nichols, and Jonathan Nichols.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Thema, and one older sister.

Robert Monroe Phillips, 99, of Manhattan, died on September 17, 2023, at Meadowlark.

He was born June 3, 1924, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the youngest of five children of Herbert William and Adeline May (Dicken) Phillips. When he was an infant, his family moved to Elk County, KS after his father was disabled from a work injury. They later moved to Wichita where he graduated from East High School in 1942. He served in Europe in the Army Air Force during World War Il, and was honorably discharged.

He married Opal Korean Brown in Wichita on April 7, 1946. They moved to Manhattan later that year and he graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1951. He began his veterinary career in Fergus Falls, MN, moving, in 1953, to Oberlin, KS where he started a predominantly large animal practice. In 1969 he entered graduate school at the University of Georgia where he earned a Ph.D. In medical microbiology in 1972. After 3 years at Jensen-Salsbery Laboratories in Kansas City he accepted a virology position in the diagnostic laboratory at the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine where he remained until his retirement in 1994.

As a man of faith, Bob was active in his church and community, and considered it a joy to serve others. He was also an avid golfer well into his 90’s and enjoyed playing with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his 4 siblings, and his son Jeff. He is survived by his wife, children Tom (Jenny) Phillips of Seattle, WA, Mary (Rod) Vestal of Sherwood, AR, Paul (Beth) Phillips of Woodland Park, CO, 6 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church of Manhattan, Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 10:00 am until the memorial services at 11:00 with Pastor Chris Geyer officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan, KS.

Robert Monroe  Phillips, DVM

Arlys M. Zoellner, 90, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

Arlys Mae Zoellner was born on December 7, 1932, to Ruben Ludvig and Jennie Elida (Ness) Johnson in Britton, SD. She grew up on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church in rural Claremont. Arlys attended a one-room school in Riverside Township and graduated from Groton High School. Arlys attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education.

She taught Biology, English, and Business at Clark High School in Clark, SD, Madison High School in Madison, MN, and Hickman High School in Columbia, MO. On December 30, 1958, Arlys married Keith Owen Zoellner, Ph.D., in Groton, SD. After teaching, she served as a campus ministries coordinator at Stephens College, Columbia, MO, and later at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. Upon the birth of her daughter, she was a stay-at-home Mom, and then later returned to work at the Office of the Registrar at Kansas State University.

At Kansas State University, Arlys was active in the Department of Animal Science and Industry and as a leader in the Social Club. At First Lutheran Church, she and her husband led youth group, led Vacation Bible School, served as Church Librarian, and was an active member of Lydia Circle. She was active in 4-H through the Cico Shamrocks Club and in American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural Programs, including hosting a cherished AFS daughter, Sue Buell, from Sri Lanka for a year. Arlys loved people and the beauty of God's creation including flowers, gardening, and the national parks; she thought Paradise at Mount Rainier was appropriately named.

As a young girl in rural South Dakota, she never dreamed she would see the world. She loved meeting new people, seeing how they lived, and trying their favorite foods. She thoroughly agreed with Mark Twain that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness. Arlys saw 24 different countries, especially loving Argentina's Iguazu Falls and the unearthly landscape of Turkey's Cappadocia region. Most of all she loved spending time and creating memories with her nieces, Jenny and Jackie Johnson, and her daughter, Lori.

She will be remembered as a kind and loving person, who walked humbly with her God.

Arlys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Keith, and two brothers, Merton and Gary Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Zoellner, Ph.D., of Seattle, WA, brother, Lyle, and sister-in-law, Mary Johnson, of Pearland, TX, sister-in-law, Ella Johnson, of Groton, SD, Sue Buell, Ajax, Canada, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, in the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Haverlah officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery. The family of Arlys Zoellner will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contribution can be made to the First Lutheran Church or Kansas State University Foundation under the Keith and Arlys Zoellner Memorial Dissertation Award within the Department of Animal Science and Industry (D98010) and left in care of the Carlson's Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home of Manhattan.

Upon the birth of her daughter, she was a stay-at-home Mom, and then later returned to work at the Office of the Registrar at Kansas State University.At Kansas State University, Arlys was active in the Department of Animal Science and Industry and as a leader in the Social Club. At First Lutheran Church, she and her husband led youth group, led Vacation Bible School, served as Church Librarian, and was an active member of Lydia Circle. She was active in 4-H through the Cico Shamrocks Club and in American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural Programs, including hosting a cherished AFS daughter, Sue Buell, from Sri Lanka for a year. Arlys loved people and the beauty of God's creation including flowers, gardening, and the national parks; she thought Paradise at Mount Rainier was appropriately named.As a young girl in rural South Dakota, she never dreamed she would see the world. She loved meeting new people, seeing how they lived, and trying their favorite foods. She thoroughly agreed with Mark Twain that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness. Arlys saw 24 different countries, especially loving Argentina's Iguazu Falls and the unearthly landscape of Turkey's Cappadocia region. Most of all she loved spending time and creating memories with her nieces, Jenny and Jackie Johnson, and her daughter, Lori.She will be remembered as a kind and loving person, who walked humbly with her God.Arlys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Keith, and two brothers, Merton and Gary Johnson. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Zoellner, Ph.D., of Seattle, WA, brother, Lyle, and sister-in-law, Mary Johnson, of Pearland, TX, sister-in-law, Ella Johnson, of Groton, SD, Sue Buell, Ajax, Canada, and many nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, in the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Stephen Haverlah officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Cemetery. Linda L. (Schmidt) Morton, 74, of Abilene, KS passed away September 17, 2023, at Abilene Memorial Hospital. 

She was born on February 19, 1949, Fairbury, NE to William and Betty (Liesenfeld) Schmidt.Linda was a graduate of Abilene High School, class of 1967. In 1990 she received an associate degree in accounting at Park's Business College, Denver, CO. She worked for Ryerson Steel for many years and moved back to Abilene to be closer to her dad. She was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church.Over the years Linda enjoyed staying physically fit, bicycling, walking, and playing softball. She even experienced skydiving, and scuba diving. She loved photography, scrap booking, and endless hours of Sodoku. Linda loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and was so proud of them all. Linda was known as the Teddy Bear Grandma! She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mark Wayne Floberg, 69, of Junction City, passed away on September 19, 2023, peacefully at home. A visitation will take place at the Johnson Funeral Home on Monday September 25, 2023, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The service will take place Tuesday, September 26, 2023, 10:00 a.m. Cremation will follow and he will be brought back home with his family.

Mark was born on January 20, 1954, to Mardell and Dorothy Floberg, Fargo, North Dakota. Growing up, baseball was his sport. He played throughout junior high, high school, and even continued into his adult years by playing on leagues in Junction City. Besides playing the sport, he also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren take up the passion. He always loved his family over anything else. He showed this by including his family into his hobbies such as drag racing, hunting, and sports. He was a mentor, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his loving wife, Arlene; one son, Justin of Milford, Kansas; two daughters, Jennifer (Terrance) of Burleson, Texas and Elizabeth of Junction City, Kansas; one step-daughter, Vanessa (Kyle) of Westmoreland, Kansas; two brothers, Mardy of Milford, Kansas and Mike of Berryton , Kansas; one sister, Debi of Houston, Texas; ten grandchildren, Alexis, Alyssa, Brooke, Jayden, Jonathan, Arianna, Savannah, Lydia, Landyn, Libby and a gaggle of other family and friends. He is preceded by his mother and father.

Terry Gene Graff, passed away at 10:40 a.m., Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Lyons Medical Center.

 Terry was born to Frederick and Alta Graff on July 17, 1954, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. He graduated from Central High School in Camp Point, Illinois in 1973. Terry entered military service in the United States Army on August 22, 1977 as a 19E armor crewman. He served six years and five months before being honorably discharged due to medical reasons. He obtained the rank of Staff Sargeant (E-6). After leaving military service, Terry entered employment with The Department of The Army as a civilian, where he retired after thirty years of service. 

Terry enjoyed family cookouts, where he always had two helpings and then would remark the food tasted like, we will just say ‘sub-standard’. He also enjoyed horseback riding, working with the Junction City Rodeo Association, and being outdoors. He would always help family and friends whenever he could.

 Terry is survived by his wife, Shannon Lynn Graff and his son, Cody Allen Graff of Geneseo, KS; daughter, Melinda Sue Graff of Junction City, KS; three brothers, Roger Graff and wife Barbara, Dennis Graff and wife Karen, and Melvin Graff all of Illinois; sister Betty Utterback and husband Gene of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. Terry is preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents.

 A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends. Memorials may be given to the Terry Graff Memorial Fund in care of Birzer Funeral Home, 214 West Avenue South, Lyons, KS 67554.

Doneva Joy Sparks, 83, of Junction City, Kansas died on Friday, September 15, 2023 at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman, Kansas. Cremation will take place. A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will take place 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2023 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Kerry Ninemire officiating. A visitation will take place 5-7 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.

Doneva was born July 17, 1940, the daughter of Lawrence Donaldson and Alpha Lenore (Harmon) Prescott.On a summer day, June 2, 1958, in a wheat field, near Alva, Oklahoma, she married Nate Sparks. The wedding was to take place in the town of Alva, Oklahoma. However, the wedding couldn't take place in Alva because the marriage license was issued in the neighboring county. So, everyone got in their vehicles and drove to the county line where the ceremony took place in a beautiful wheat field.

Doneva graduated from Larned High School with the class of 1958. After high school and getting married, she held various jobs that included working for Bell Telephone and Montgomery Wards. She spent many years raising a family and being the domestic engineer for the Sparks household. Doneva later entered the workforce and worked as a Civil Servant at Fort Riley, selling insurance for Blue Cross and Blue Shield, serving as the administrative assistant for St. Xavier Catholic Church and a support staff employee at Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home. Over the years living and working in Junction City, Kansas she belonged to St. Xavier Catholic Church, sang with the Troubadours and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She also enjoyed spending time with Nate participating in the Single Action Shooting Society known as "Sand Hill Plum".&nbsp; Doneva enjoyed spending time with her family. She liked getting together with her entire family and loving on all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was her life!

Maurine was born, Beatrice Maurine Jenkins, on January 23, 1945, in Parsons, Kansas. She was the first of five children of William Grant and Nellie Genevieve (Whetzel) Jenkins.She married the love of her life, Raymond, on June 29, 1968, in Marshfield, Missouri. Together they moved to Wakefield, Kansas and settled in Junction City, Kansas to raise their three children. Her life was busy working for The Kansas City Star newspaper, as a carrier. Every summer she worked in her extensive vegetable garden and canning. She enjoyed teaching her kids to ride the family horse, as she had much experience with horses when she was growing up.After retiring, she was blessed with two loving granddaughters. They filled her days with constant fun and play.Maurine enjoyed arranging large family holiday meals and parties. She brought everyone together with her delicious cooking.

Survivors include her husband Raymond of Junction City, Kansas; two daughters, Charlette Whitley of Edmond, Oklahoma and Brenda Whitebread of Junction City, Kansas; two granddaughters, Claira and Sadie Whitebread of Junction City, Kansas; one brother, John Jenkins; three sisters, Virginia Koonce, Maraland Stevens, and June Young.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Brian Gould.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Richard Duane Avery II, age 72, died September 12, 2023, at his residence in Wakefield, KS. He was born to Richard and Grace (Gulley) Avery, in Shiloh Valley, Illinois, on January 20, 1951. Richard grew up in Rolla, Missouri. He graduated from Rolla High School at seventeen and quickly enlisted in the Army. Richard began his military career in 1968 as a tank loader and driver. He quickly worked his way up in rank and was a Tank Platoon Sergeant and Commander by 1974. From 1979 through 1985 he was stationed in West Germany working for headquarters as an Intelligence Sergeant and Tanker. Richard went back to Fort Riley and finished his career in 1993 holding a Non Commissioned Officer position in charge of Crage Fitness Center. He earned his associate degree through Central Texas College during his time in service. Richard retired after 25 years of service and earned many commendations and medals some include a national defense service medal, meritorious service medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and a Bronze Star.&nbsp;

Richard was a collector of all things. He was a firm believer that one was never enough. He enjoyed college football and was an avid Chief fan. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. &nbsp;Richard is preceded in death by his parents.

Richard Duane Avery II

James (Jim) C. Livingston, 70 of Abilene passed away September 15, 2023. He was born October 11, 1952 in Abilene, the son of Glen and Theodora (Stants) Livingston. He grew up in the Dickinson County area and graduated from Chapman High School in 1970. Jim’s occupations consisted of working at Walker Stone Company, Hulcher Train Wrecking, as well as worked as an over the road truck driver, hauling cattle and other products. He was a member of the fraternal Order of Eagles club 830 of Junction City, joining in 1975.Growing up on the farm, Jim and his classmate Galyn (Shari’s brother) enjoyed terrorizing the town. He will be remembered as being eclectic in his ways of antiquing and overall “collections” around his home and farm. His affinity for beer signs and old cars was second to none. Believe it or not, he even collected a few porcelain dolls for his grandchildren. He could never resist a “quick” stop at the casino while out on the road traveling with Shari and Maynard. We are saddened to say that the Hornet has now signed off and has joined Phantom and Thumper.

Jim is survived by his pillow partner of 27 ½ years Shari Lenhart; sister, Janice Warhurst of KS; daughter, Laura Harden of NC; son, John Livingston and wife Amanda of VA; grandchildren, Alexis Johnson (Craig); Austin and Dakota Boatright; Devin, Derik, Darius, and Ariah Harden; Brooke Livingston; great-grandchildren, Jace Kain and Alayna Johnson; stepchildren Dustin and Darci Wheeler. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Catrina Boatright and two brothers, Dennis and Kenneth.

Funeral Services for Jim will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at Danner Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Livingston/Union Cemetery, 2951 Indy Rd, Abilene, KS. Ronald E. Mangel, 89, of Alma, Nebraska, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on September 5, 2023.

 Born on August 25, 1934 in Herington, Kansas to Earl and Theresa (Mangel) Pawling. Theresa passed when he was just a toddler, leaving his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Minnie Mangel to raise him. He was a retired Union Steamfitter, Plumber and Orbital Welder. He was a very loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He “Loved it when a plan came together" and was always the Happiest guy in the room! He will be greatly missed for his sense of humor and his contagious smile. He was quite a character in his own right. An avid sports fan, a world traveler, a painter, a poet, a story writer and he loved to read.

 He is survived by his five children- Terri Werger, Rondy (Ross) Mussina, Rick (Susan) Mangel, Tami Mangel, Rod (Melissa) Mangel; two stepsons- Mark Herbel, Mike Herbel; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Proceeded in death by both of his parents and his grandparents. 

Services will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, KS.

Ronald E. Mangel

Benjamin Francis Gockel, age 48, of Manhattan, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023, at home with his family by his side after a long battle with CHF.

He was born on January 21, 1975, in Topeka, the son of Joyce Davis and Edward Davis.

Ben grew up in the St. Marys community. He spent many years working at Gockel’s IGA and later Gockel’s Thriftway. He graduated from St. Marys High and later attended Washburn University graduating with a bachelors and LMSW in Social Work. Ben had a passion for helping people and spent many years providing social work care to others. His passion for helping others continued even after his passing when he chose to donate his body to KU Medical Center for CHF research.

He is survived by his mother, Joyce Davis of Manhattan; aunt, Jane Gockel of Manhattan; brother, Matt Davis (Sarah) of Manhattan; and niece, Delaney Davis of Manhattan.

We would like to thank Dr. Mark McHaney and his staff, the staff at Good Shepard Homecare and Hospice, and the staff at Kellstrom Pharmacy for their caring and comfort of Ben.

A celebration of life for Ben will be held at the Flint Hills Discovery Center, 315 South 3rd Street, Manhattan, KS 66502, in the Blue Earth Room on Saturday, October 14th from 1:00-3:00p.m.

Benjamin Francis Gockel

David Bingham Walter, aged 41, son of Michael and Viola Walter, passed away on September 17, 2023, at home in Manhattan, Kansas. He was born on March 5, 1982, in Ogden, Utah. David was a loving and easy-going individual who was known for his thoughtfulness and caring nature. He had a passion for playing board games and enjoyed spending his free time reading, fishing, wood-working, acrylics, and the study of nature.

David attended the local Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School and later graduated from Manhattan High School. He further pursued his education at Manhattan Technical College, where he earned an associate's degree in Internet Technology.

David loved to serve. He contributed to society as a continuing advocate for the Boy Scouts of America during summer scout camps. He is an Eagle Scout.

For over 20 years, David dedicated his career to Dillions Supermarket, where he made valuable contributions to the company as a meat cutter. His commitment and hard work were greatly appreciated by his colleagues and superiors. He was a loyal employee.

David is survived by his loved ones, including his siblings Lorraine Tesene, Scott, Bruce, Melissa Salvatore, Kenneth, Jonathan, Michelle Langford, and Kevin.

David is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His faith was an important aspect of his life, and he found solace and support within his religious community.

In this time of grief and loss, we remember David for his quiet nature, loving spirit, and his dedication to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

David Bingham Walter

June Johns left this world peacefully on September 14, 2023 in Manhattan, Kansas. June was born June 1, 1927, the youngest child of George Whitfield and Ocie Mae (Morris) Wheless in Manchester, Georgia.

June graduated from Manchester High School in 1944 and attended West Georgia College in Carrollton, GA and then Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

On March 29th 1947, she married James Lincoln Johns in Manhattan, Kansas. They made their first home in Kansas City, where Jim worked for General Mills before they moved to Manhattan in 1948 to help operate Johns Creamery and Dairy Bar.

June was a member of First Methodist Church, of United Methodist Women and a member of the La Sertoma Club since 1957.

June will be remembered as a woman who was happiest when putting her family first. She was a loving wife and mother and was a dearly loved and wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also treasured by her extended family and enjoyed the company of lifelong friends, some of who she made while selling Avon and square dancing. She loved planting flowers outside and was always ready for one of her greatest pleasures - “road trips”! This joy started with annual family vacations and over the years included trips to visit family and friends. She truly enjoyed traveling to numerous sporting events – from Manhattan Indians to KSU Wildcats to the KC Royals. She was always ready and especially treasured trips to watch her children and grandchildren compete or perform.

June was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, her parents, brothers Raymond and Hugh; sisters Kathleen, Clarice, Olee and Ruth; a daughter, Susan Weaver and a grandson, Keith Glover.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Glover of Grand Junction, CO; Peggy Johns and partner Marian Tilford; son Joseph Johns and wife Sharon; and son-in-law Tracy Weaver all of Manhattan, KS; eight grandchildren, Brad, Ben, Clint and his wife Samantha, Sam and his wife Teresa, Robyn, John, Jim and Abigail; six great-grandchildren Samuel, Avery, Tucker, Cooper, Maisie and Morrison and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Family and friends will be welcomed from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday September 19, 2023 at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with private family internment to follow.

June Johns

Betty Faye Cook Shirley, age 77, of Manhattan, passed away September 13, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

Betty was born July 21, 1946, the daughter of Curtis and Carmen (Countryman) Cook in Garden City, Kansas. She grew up on the family farm surrounded by her close-knit extended family. She attended Garden City area schools and graduated from Garden City High School with the class of 1964.

On March 29, 1970 Betty was united in marriage to Clinton C. ‘Bud’ Shirley, Jr. He survives at their home in Manhattan.

Over the years Betty worked as a civilian on Fort Riley Military Base, was a childcare provider, and a paraprofessional in Manhattan, KS USD 383 as well as Eldorado, KS USD 490. In later years she worked for Kansas Social and Rehabilitative Services, specifically in Vocational Rehabilitation. In 1994 she was awarded Secretary of the Year by the Kansas Association of Rehabilitation Secretaries.

Betty was a loving and supportive partner to the love of her life, Bud. They were devoted to each other and an example of a marriage that was made and maintained with love, friendship, and mutual respect. They were a team and faced life’s rollercoaster together 100%.

Betty was a selfless and caring mom and grandma. She was the greatest cheerleader to her own children and grandchildren, as well as her siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, friends of her kids and kids of her friends, daycare children, and anyone else who needed her. She was a resourceful maker of things including hand-sewed dresses, pjs, costumes, and toys, home-made playdough, favorite meals and goodies. She indulged her kid’s creativity, allowing extensive living room forts, and block cities. She had a flare for art, especially drawing and painting. She was an avid reader and lover of books. A talented musician, she was known to accompany toddler marching bands with ragtime piano songs as well as playing the classics. She loved music of all kinds but had a special affinity for Willie Nelson and The Oak Ridge Boys.

Betty was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

In addition to her husband, Bud, she is survived by her children, Bill Shirley, Jenny Aggson (Travis), Brian Shirley (Stephanie), Emily Taylor (Clay); grandchildren, Katelyn Shirley, Connor, Maverick, and Cameryn Aggson, Liz and Cain Taylor, Drew and Taylor Shirley, and her Thai grandson Wasu ‘Jearler’ Mukdaprasert. She is also survived by her special friend, Diane Matteson.

Betty was so loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday September 21, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday September 22, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2812 Marlatt Avenue in Manhattan. Interment will follow at Sunrise Cemetery.

She loved music of all kinds but had a special affinity for Willie Nelson and The Oak Ridge Boys.Betty was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.In addition to her husband, Bud, she is survived by her children, Bill Shirley, Jenny Aggson (Travis), Brian Shirley (Stephanie), Emily Taylor (Clay); grandchildren, Katelyn Shirley, Connor, Maverick, and Cameryn Aggson, Liz and Cain Taylor, Drew and Taylor Shirley, and her Thai grandson Wasu ‘Jearler’ Mukdaprasert. Ivan Kozar, Sr., 77, of Wamego, passed away Sunday, September 3rd, after a short illness, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan.&nbsp;

Ivan was born in Čakovec, Croatia on June 20, 1946, the son of the late Katarina and Martin Kozar. On October 5, 1969, he was united in marriage to Ksenija Kozar, in Preko, Croatia, who preceded him in death on June 16, 1998. He had an Engineering degree from Čakovec, Croatia. Ivan and Ksenija Sontag Kozarc came to the United States in 1971 and lived in New York for several years. 

In 1978 they moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where Ivan dedicated his working years to D&amp;R Construction.&nbsp; He was a former member of the choir at Seven Dolors Catholic Church and attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. 

Ivan was an avid reader and was teaching his grandchildren Croatian.Ivan is &nbsp;survived by four children, Fani (Andy) Wefald, of Manhattan; Ivan (Pat ) Kozar, Jr., of Thailand; David (Kari) Kozar, of Australia; Michelle (Jeff) Kirk, of Wamego; grandchildren, Kayla Thomas, Carson Dieker, Emma Dieker, Kaeli Wefald, Cassie Wefald; Emerson Kirk, Declan Kirk, Colten Kirk.

May 27, 1942&nbsp;~&nbsp;September 6, 2023&nbsp;(age 81)

Lawrence W. Johnston, 81, of Apollo, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 6th, at Forbes Hospital, Monroeville. 

Larry was born in Omaha, NE on May 27, 1942, a son of the late Hazel F. (Hicks) Johnston and William H. Johnston. He was a 1960 graduate of Junction City High School. He attended Kansas State University for 3 years studying electrical engineering. 

Larry worked 23 years as a 2-way radio repairman for Topeka FM Communications. He then worked 20 years for the NCC in the state of Michigan as a public safety technician. He was a member of Delta Presbyterian Church in Lansing, MI. He was active in his church, where he was a volunteer as the clerk of Session and sang in the choir. He was a reserve police lieutenant for Junction City, KS, a member of the Blue #17 and Royal Arch masons. He was a national member of the Shriners, a member of the York Rite in Salina KS, and a past master of the mason lodge in Chapman, KS. 

Larry enjoyed teaching gun safety, duck hunting, singing, and collecting coins. Larry is survived by his wife of 52 1/2 years, Janet Rae (Miles) Johnston, his children Amy (Frank) Hill, of Eaton Rapids, MI; Kevin S. Johnston, of Apollo; and Tammy (Dave) Huston, of Freeport. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Kenneth Hill, John Hill, Alyssa (David McKay) Huston, Katheryn (Glenn Spath) Huston and Rebecca Huston; 3 great grandchildren, Paxton McKay, Nova Hill, Adalyn McKay and one on the way, and his sister, Frances E. Johnston, of Lansing, MI, and his adopted daughter Kay Johnston Yette and two adopted grandchildren Chris Johnston and Cheyanne Yette of Silver Lake Kansas.

“Mikki” Gray, born to Joseph McKnight and Lily Walker in Philadelphia, PA on July 23, 1973, left a legacy filled with love, warmth, and a zest for life.

 Throughout her life, Mikki embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, establishing several boutiques in Junction City, including the beloved Mickey's Plus Size Boutique. At her boutique, she offered incense, oils, candles, and novelty gifts, bringing joy to her customers with every visit.Mikki's caring nature extended to her work as a Registered Nurse. She continued her education and refresher courses at Barton Community College, Brown Mackie College, and Manhattan Technical College. She dedicated her time to making a difference in the lives of others. She worked at the Juvenile Detention Center as a CO and, more recently, at the CSL Plasma Donation Center in Manhattan, KS.

 A devoted member of the Order of Eastern Star in Washington, DC, Mikki cherished her community and found solace in her membership. Mikki was not only a skilled entrepreneur and dedicated professional but also a loving mother. Her sons, Trey and Kenney, hold dear the memories of her delicious seafood nights, soul food, and chicken Alfredo meals. Mikki's passion for cooking brought comfort and joy to her family's hearts.In her leisure time, Mikki found happiness in video gaming, playing spades, and dominoes. She had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs (China, Drako, and Spade) and fish, including a treasured red-belly piranha and a jaguar fish. Mikki was a radiant presence in her family's life. She held her family and animals closest to her heart. Mikki's infectious smile and outgoing personality touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.Mikki's legacy also includes the cherished family memories she created. One of the most unforgettable moments was a family vacation when her sons, Kenney and Trey, and husband, Kenney, Sr. embarked on to Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida. They made the journey with Trey's best friend, Elijah, in tow. Together, they explored the sights, enjoyed meals on a boat close to the shoreline, and had a blast on go-karts, where the boys couldn't resist the fun of crashing into each other.Mikki's adventurous spirit even led her to introduce Trey to what she fondly called a "chicken nugget" during the Florida trip, which turned out to be a fried crocodile! They marveled at baby crocodiles in a tank at a restaurant on the shoreline, creating lasting memories that will forever be cherished. In this time of mourning, we remember Mikki Gray as a beacon of love, compassion, and joy. She will forever be cherished in our hearts.

Mikki faced the loss of her husband, Kenneth Gray, Sr., in July of 2022. She leaves in faith her two sons, Trey J. Gray (Ari E. Smith, girlfriend) and Kenneth A. Gray Jr. (Junction City), her son from another mother, Elijah Z. Evans (Junction City), and a daughter, Shawnette McKnight (Chester, Pennsylvania), to carry on her memory. Extended love family include Uncle Travis Boyd and Auntie Dr. Crystal J. Davis.May she rest in eternal peace. All is well, Mikki is complete. And so it is. Amen.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joelena M. "Mikki" Gray - 1973 - 2023

Letha Rae Herren, 90, of Alma, Kansas died on September 12, 2023 at KU Medical Center after a brief illness.

Rae was born December 18, 1932 to Arnold and Elizabeth (Hochhaus) Steinmeyer at their home south of Alma. &nbsp;She attended a one room school house close to the farm and then graduated from Alma High School in 1950.

Rae and Melvin Herren were wed on July 16, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church. &nbsp; He preceded her in death on December 3, 2021, after 71 years of marriage.

Rae worked outside the home during her early marriage, however, gave her life to child rearing and caregiving when they started their family. &nbsp;She was the mother who drove to every ball game after feeding team members, sewed all the cheerleader uniforms, worked the concession stands, sewed and knitted clothes for her family and others, grew all their food and preserved it, all while keeping a spotless house and ensuring their family grew up knowing the Lord. &nbsp;She worked tirelessly for her family and friends in the community often providing food and clothing for others. &nbsp;Once her children were raised she became one of the first volunteer EMT’s in Alma, eventually working for AMR and retiring at the age of 70. &nbsp;She then kept herself busy with landscaping and gardening her beautiful yard during the warmer months and hand quilting exquisite quilts during the cold months. &nbsp;Early mornings found her doing crosswords puzzles and Wordle to keep herself sharp. &nbsp;Finally, she was a caregiver for Mel, keeping him alive through her tenacity and strength of character.

Rae’s legacy is her children and their families: &nbsp;Kim of Alma, Kent of Tulsa, OK, Karen (Tim) of DeSoto, and Keith (Jennifer) of Camarillo, CA.; &nbsp;7 grandchildren; &nbsp;2 great grandchildren. &nbsp;Also surviving are her siblings, Grace Wilson of Mesa, AZ, Vonnie Suelter of Aurora, MO, and Lee Steinmeyer of Wheaton, KS. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Mel; her grandson, Kyle Herren; and her sister, Dana Henderson.

Her legacy of strong Christian values, love and selflessness for her family, orderliness, cleanliness, and gardening will live on.

Funeral services will be held Monday (September 18, 2023) at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp; at St John Lutheran Church in Alma with Pastor Robert Grimm. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 10 am. in the Memorial Hall at St John Lutheran. &nbsp;

Letha Rae Herren

Lila Madalene Tiemeyer, 94 died September 11, 2023, in Linn, KS. &nbsp;She was born on October 14, 1928, in Washington County, the daughter of Joseph Leo and Ida Pauline Sophia (Killman) Schumock. &nbsp;Lila was a graduate of Clifton High School and Wayne School of Nursing in Chicago, IL. &nbsp;She married Ohmer Tiemeyer on February 11, 1947. &nbsp;Lila worked as a nurse at Community Care Nursing Home in Clifton and at Linn Community Nursing Home in Linn. &nbsp;She also worked as a volunteer for Meadowlark Hospice for several years. &nbsp;Ohmer preceded her in death on July 2, 2001.

 &nbsp;Lila was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Palmer and the American Legion Auxiliary. &nbsp;She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lela Chaput, brother, Richard Schumock, sister-in-law, Sharon Schumock, brothers-in-law, Virgil Chaput and Lawrence Lehman
