SSG (Ret.) Charles G. Adams, 73, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on October 1, 2023, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas.

He enlisted into the Army after high school and served his country honorably for 21 years until his retirement in 1988. He married his loving wife, Jong in 1978, and lived happily together ever since. He is survived by his wife and two sisters, Julie and Ruth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Patrick J. Nicholson

Elizabeth Louise Wischer, 28, fell asleep in Christ and went to the heavenly realm on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, from her home near Longford, Kansas, with her animals, friends, and family close by. The sky was blue that afternoon, the sun was shining, and a large Christmas tree that had been decorated by her friends sparkled outside the big picture window next to where she lay. Other Christmas lights and decorations brightened the room inside, and her mom and brothers held her close. Elizabeth loved celebrating the birth of Jesus, and she slipped into sleep to the sound of Christmas carols all around her.

She was born to Jeff and Lori Wischer on October 13, 1994. She grew up caring for her animals, braiding and styling her thick, long, golden-blond hair, creating artwork, teasing her two big brothers, and eagerly helping with the family farm. As an adult she continued all of these passions and also grew to especially love riding horses, driving and working on square-body pickups, creating photography, writing books and devotions, woodworking in her shop, collecting pocket knives, reading her Bible, and, most of all, spending time with her brothers in whatever way possible. There was no end to Elizabeth’s interests and passions, as long as she was doing them with those whom she loved.She worked at the Coachlight Restaurant in Longford for over 10 years, where she loved bantering with all of her farmer and community friends, forming heart ties with her dear coworkers, and enjoying Birthday Pie with her Birthday Twin, Byron. She also worked as a receptionist at Dr. Hogan’s clinic in Salina, where she enjoyed special friendships with her coworkers, and for Curtis McKale as a helper during harvest and calving seasons, where, dressed in thick coveralls in the middle of the night, she saw her first calf be born.

Nothing filled her with more joy, however, than her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was deeply active in her church with a fervent heart, singing in the choir, helping with VBS, serving as the YWR for the LWML Kansas District, volunteering with the church’s fireworks stand, and occasionally driving church friends to run errands. She also went on several church youth trips to help with disaster recovery efforts.

On March 24, 2022, Elizabeth was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukemia that began an 18-month-long battle with the illness. Her church and community friends stood steadfastly beside her through the whole journey, supporting and encouraging her spiritually, financially, and emotionally, and for that she was filled with the deepest gratitude and love. God also faithfully held onto her through it all, always causing her to believe that a special miracle was coming, and thereby giving her an unfailing joy that shined on all of those around her. In the end she got her miracle—the greatest miracle of all. The Lord gave her the crown of life and brought her home to Himself, out from this veil of tears, to live with Him in Paradise in eternal peace and joy.

She is survived by her parents; her brothers, Max Wischer and Zeke Wischer; her father-in-life, Curtis McKale; her sister-in-life, Amy Wayman; her honorary brother, Seth Stout; her sister-friend from infancy, Bethany Laude; and a multitude of additional dearest friends and family.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, Kansas, 67410. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1600 N. Buckeye Ave., Abilene, Kansas, 67410, with graveside committal to follow at the Keystone Cemetery. Afterwards, there will be a luncheon back at the church in Abilene.

Elizabeth Louise Wischer

Thomas Owen “Tom” Wilson passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Abilene on Saturday, September 23, 2023. He was born June 28, 1928 near Talmage the son of Bert Sr and Catharine (Fawcett) Wilson.He attended Talmage grade school, went to Manhattan, Kansas and then graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1948. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge.

Tom worked for Abilene Flour and Midwest Mills as a truck driver for 27 years. He then was the co-owner of Captain Clean in Abilene from 1973 – 1993 before retiring. After retirement he worked for Holm Automotive.Tom was a member of the Jolly Mixers Polka Dancing Club past member of the Benevolent Lodge 98 and a long time member of the First Christian Church. Tom was an avid fisherman, enjoyed woodworking, camping, card games reading, gospel music and polka dancing. 

On April 23, 1955 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Bibb in Abilene. His loving wife of 68 years survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughters Chadra Schmitz and her husband Leonard of Abilene, Denise Friis and her husband Scott of Arvada, Colorado, sister Dorothy Walter of Rogers, Arkansas, brother Mick Wilson of Texas, three grandchildren Jeremiah Schmitz (Monica), Matthew Schmitz (Suzie), Jessica Seaton (Brian), great grandchildren Hannah Schmitz, Madelin Schmitz, Savannah Seaton, Hazel Seaton, Ruth Seaton, Parker Schmitz, and one on the way. Great-Great grandchildren Maeson Schmitz and Oakley Schmitz and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey T. Wilson, brothers Bert Wilson Jr, Frank Wilson, Steve Wilson, and his parents.

Funeral services for Tom will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2023 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. His final resting place will be in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fr. Riley Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until&nbsp; service time that day.

Rose Mina Simmons, 88, of Manhattan, Kansas, died September 28, 2023 at Wellsprings of Westmoreland, Kansas.

Born in Clay Center, Kansas on February 28, 1935 to Harvey Louis Oetinger and Alice Lennea (Berggren) Oetinger, Rose Mina attended Morganville School and subsequently earned a 2-year teaching degree at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. She taught third grade at WaKeeney for two years before her intended Norman Simmons drew her to finish her Bachelor’s in Education at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.

Norman &amp; Rosie married in Morganville, Kansas on June 23, 1957. In Texas where Norman was finishing his Masters, she taught school and they welcomed their son Christopher. Jennifer joined the family in Hays, Kansas, while Susan followed in Scranton, Kansas. In addition to being a busy mom, she had many jobs as she followed Norman from church to church. She taught English at K-State in Manhattan and was a school librarian in both Independence, Kansas, and Kansas City, Kansas.

Rosie and Norm retired to Manhattan, Kansas where she enjoyed volunteering for the Flint Hills Breadbasket, Via Christi Hospital, and Friendship Meals.

Rosie was devoted to God and her church communities at White City United Methodist Church and Church of Our Savior United Methodist Church in Junction City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Lennea Nikkel. She is survived by her husband Norm, son Christopher Simmons (Robyn Speidel), daughter Jennifer Wheelock (A. Tobey), and daughter Susan Byrne (Timothy), six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Rosie chose to donate her body to further scientific research at KU Med Center.

The Celebration of Life is 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 6 at Yorgensen Meloan Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan, with Reverend Dr. Dennis Ackerman officiating. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Rose Mina Simmons

Dr. Donald Harris Kropf passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 25, 2023. For the past two and half years, Don lived in Lenexa, Kansas with his son, Bradley and Bradley’s wife, Jenny, where they cared for him faithfully.

Don was born on March 8, 1931 and grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin. He participated in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. As an adult, he loved the pasture tending cattle, splitting wood, and for a while, he was quite the Atari Pacman expert. His children woke up many a Saturday morning to ba-ba-ba-ba of Pacman. Don taught his kids to do math in their heads (because one needs it for playing Skunk, dominoes or counting points in Bridge). Don read The Manhattan Mercury every day and watched the evening news. He subscribed to National Geographic, Readers’ Digest (it pays to improve your word power, after all…), and Guideposts. Don was also known for long, newsy letters.

Don was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. He served as the 5th grade Sunday School teacher for many years, and stumped many 5th graders with his legendary crossword puzzles. During his later years, he was a part of the Saints and Sinners Sunday School class. Don also served the Stephens Ministry Program. He visited numerous people at Meadowlark, the hospital, and did emergency calls at the hospital. He also participated in one-on-one ministry through the program.

Of course, Don was always EARLY to church on Sunday morning (especially during his years as a Sunday School teacher). Even when he was done teaching Sunday school, Gwen and Don rarely came together to church because Gwen's policy was always to be late to church. Don enjoyed visiting with people before church and making them feel welcome—and it stressed him out to be late. Later, he rode the church bus and waited steadfastly at the end of his street so the bus would not have to come down the one-lane road to get him.

Don served in the United States Army from September 17, 1956 to July 18, 1958. Don used to say that his unit (the unit was full of those with Ph.D.s and Master’s degrees) excelled on the tests of intellect, but did not do so well on the tests of fitness! He served at Fort Sheridan, Illinois—just north of Chicago where he met Gwendolyn Ann Slover Kropf. They married on June 23, 1962 and were married 57 years. Gwen preceded him in death on December 5, 2019.

Don leaves behind three children: Gregory (Mary) Westphalia, Kansas, Bradley (Jenny), Lenexa, Kansas, and Martha (John), Charlotte, North Carolina. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Heather, Anna, Melissa, Adam, Thomas, Lauren, Becky, Gwendolyn, Julia, Zachary, Morgan, and John. He also leaves one great grandchild, Jason Hall-Kropf. Don also leaves a sister, Arlene (Watertown, Wisconsin) and a sister-in-law Frances Slover Schiff (Plattsburg, NY). We all have happy memories of big family get-togethers.

Don was a Professor of Meat Science at Kansas State University from 1962-2006. Before that, he was briefly at Clemson University (1958-1962). He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1956 in Biochemistry and Animal Husbandry. Don had a prestigious career as a professor of Meat Science at Kansas State University. He traveled all over the world including Iran in 1972 and the Soviet Union in 1991. He was president of the American Meat Science Association in 1986. He won the “Distinguished Service Award” from the Kansas Meat Processors Association in 2000. He was also the recipient of the R.C. Pollack Award from the American Meat Science Association for “Extraordinary and Lasting Contributions to the Livestock and Meat Industry.” Don also won the Intercollegiate Meat Judging 1995 “Meritorious Service Award” from the American Meat Science Association.

Don was also well-known for his messy office. Noted one K-Stater: “Dr. Kropf was always the greatest advocate for the students. A favorite memory of him is asking him for information/an article in his office. He would say ‘if it is not in this pile, it is in this pile. I will get it to you sometime today.’ I think he always had it to me within a half hour.”

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Sunday October 22, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz in Manhattan.

Funeral services will follow the visitation at 3:00 p.m. at the church on Sunday October 22, 2023. Interment will follow at the Carnahan Creek Cemetery.

For the past two and half years, Don lived in Lenexa, Kansas with his son, Bradley and Bradley’s wife, Jenny, where they cared for him faithfully.Don was born on March 8, 1931 and grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin. He participated in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. As an adult, he loved the pasture tending cattle, splitting wood, and for a while, he was quite the Atari Pacman expert. His children woke up many a Saturday morning to ba-ba-ba-ba of Pacman. Don taught his kids to do math in their heads (because one needs it for playing Skunk, dominoes or counting points in Bridge). Don read The Manhattan Mercury every day and watched the evening news. He subscribed to National Geographic, Readers’ Digest (it pays to improve your word power, after all…), and Guideposts. Don was also known for long, newsy letters.Don was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. He served as the 5th grade Sunday School teacher for many years, and stumped many 5th graders with his legendary crossword puzzles. During his later years, he was a part of the Saints and Sinners Sunday School class. Don also served the Stephens Ministry Program. He visited numerous people at Meadowlark, the hospital, and did emergency calls at the hospital. He also participated in one-on-one ministry through the program.Of course, Don was always EARLY to church on Sunday morning (especially during his years as a Sunday School teacher). Even when he was done teaching Sunday school, Gwen and Don rarely came together to church because Gwen's policy was always to be late to church. Don enjoyed visiting with people before church and making them feel welcome—and it stressed him out to be late. Later, he rode the church bus and waited steadfastly at the end of his street so the bus would not have to come down the one-lane road to get him.Don served in the United States Army from September 17, 1956 to July 18, 1958. Don used to say that his unit (the unit was full of those with Ph.D.s and Master’s degrees) excelled on the tests of intellect, but did not do so well on the tests of fitness! He served at Fort Sheridan, Illinois—just north of Chicago where he met Gwendolyn Ann Slover Kropf. They married on June 23, 1962 and were married 57 years. Gwen preceded him in death on December 5, 2019.Don leaves behind three children: Gregory (Mary) Westphalia, Kansas, Bradley (Jenny), Lenexa, Kansas, and Martha (John), Charlotte, North Carolina. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Heather, Anna, Melissa, Adam, Thomas, Lauren, Becky, Gwendolyn, Julia, Zachary, Morgan, and John. He also leaves one great grandchild, Jason Hall-Kropf. Don also leaves a sister, Arlene (Watertown, Wisconsin) and a sister-in-law Frances Slover Schiff (Plattsburg, NY). We all have happy memories of big family get-togethers.Don was a Professor of Meat Science at Kansas State University from 1962-2006. Before that, he was briefly at Clemson University (1958-1962). He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1956 in Biochemistry and Animal Husbandry. Don had a prestigious career as a professor of Meat Science at Kansas State University. He traveled all over the world including Iran in 1972 and the Soviet Union in 1991. He was president of the American Meat Science Association in 1986. He won the “Distinguished Service Award” from the Kansas Meat Processors Association in 2000. He was also the recipient of the R.C. Pollack Award from the American Meat Science Association for “Extraordinary and Lasting Contributions to the Livestock and Meat Industry.” Don also won the Intercollegiate Meat Judging 1995 “Meritorious Service Award” from the American Meat Science Association.Don was also well-known for his messy office. Noted one K-Stater: “Dr. Kropf was always the greatest advocate for the students. A favorite memory of him is asking him for information/an article in his office. He would say ‘if it is not in this pile, it is in this pile. I will get it to you sometime today.’ I think he always had it to me within a half hour.”The family will greet friends during a visitation from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Sunday October 22, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz in Manhattan.Funeral services will follow the visitation at 3:00 p.m. at the church on Sunday October 22, 2023. Dr. Donald Harris Kropf 

Rick L. Weeks, 67, of Louisville, Kansas, passed away on Friday (September 29, 2023) at his home.

Born November 27, 1955 in Marysville, Kansas, Rick was the son of Frank H. and Jesse Louise (Hale) Weeks. He married Tammie Springer on April 13, 1985 in Wamego.

Rick served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1975 to 1978.

In 1980, he opened Rick’s Body Shop in Louisville which he still operated. &nbsp;His work was his hobby as well as spending time with his family. &nbsp;He was active in his community, serving for many years on the Louisville City Council. &nbsp;Rick was also a member of the St. George American Legion. &nbsp;

Survivors include a son, Frank Weeks (Cathy) of Louisville; a daughter, Maggie Lundberg (Trevor) of Westmoreland; seven grandchildren, Jorden Rekward, Aeryn Rekward, Wayne Lundberg, Lyle Lundberg, Ryleigh Lundberg and Blayne Lundberg; &nbsp;a brother, Don Weeks (Diana) of Junction City, KS; four sisters, &nbsp;Shirley Cox (Dan) of Fostoria, KS, Diana Reves (Dan) of Westmoreland, KS, Debbie Lundgren (Dave) of Westmoreland, KS and Penny Nelson (Roger) of Randolph, KS; a sister in law, Shelley Weeks of Louisville, KS; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Larry Weeks, Roger Weeks and Randy Weeks; and a sister, Lavonne “Shorty” McGuire.

Floyd Frank Munson, age 87 of Olsburg, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Ascension Via Christ St. Francis in Wichita.

He was born on March 17, 1936, in Olsburg, the son of Frank and Ida (Anderson) Munson.

He married Geneva Nelson on September 5, 1954, and they had two children, Tracy and Julie.&nbsp; She preceded him in death in 1989.

On December 22, 1990, he married Julie Ann Craig.

Floyd was a lifetime farmer and worked for Pottawatomie County Weed Department for ten years.&nbsp; He was a member of the Olsburg Lutheran Church and in his younger years was a member of the Olsburg Lions Club and served on the board with Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Julie Munson of Olsburg; a daughter, Julie Higgins (Dan) of Leonardville; a son, Matthew Clark of Hampton, Virginia; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tracy Munson; a brother, Harold Munson, and a sister, Ruth Nelson.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the Olsburg Lutheran Church with Pastor Kaylie Ines officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment &nbsp;will be in the Olsburg City Cemetery.

Floyd Frank Munson

Wanda Lea (Hollowell) Goff passed away Monday, September 25, 2023, at her home in Keats, Kansas at the age of 95.

Wanda was one of ten children born to William and Ada Hollowell.&nbsp; She and her twin brother, Wayne, were born June 12, 1928, in Barnes, Kansas.&nbsp; Over time the family moved to MayDay, Riley, and Keats.&nbsp; Shortly after her high school graduation, Wanda married her sweetheart, Dean Goff, on December 8, 1946.&nbsp; Together they raised their 10 children on a dairy farm two miles east of Keats.&nbsp; They celebrated 68 years of marriage before Dean passed away in February of 2015.&nbsp; Wanda had one love, words were never spoken of another.

She was the best of the best.&nbsp; Taking on the role of homemaker, she raised her family on the dairy farm shared with her in-laws.&nbsp; She never shied away from hard work and providing for her family.&nbsp; After raising her family, Wanda went to work at K-State.&nbsp; She retired after 21 years (at the age of 77) as a baker from Derby Food Services.

She did not need diamonds and jewels, gowns, and fur coats.&nbsp; But when she left home she always looked her best - combed hair, shined shoes, pressed clothes.&nbsp; Yes, she believed in following the rules: no white after Labor Day, coordinating accessories, and making sure things were the right fit.

To many, Wanda was a quiet woman, but in the eyes of her family, she was so much more.&nbsp; She knew right from wrong and taught it by example.&nbsp; She didn’t gossip, she didn’t interfere, she didn’t try and tell you how to run your life, she wasn’t strongly opinionated.&nbsp; She never tried to be something she wasn’t.&nbsp; Often, it’s growing up and raising our own families or living as an adult in today’s world that we can see and acknowledge the sacrifices she made by always caring and putting others first. &nbsp;

Her joys were many, from family gatherings to rides on country back roads, feeding her birds and collecting thimbles.&nbsp; Her true passion was counted cross stitch.&nbsp; She was no stranger to needle and thread, having been a seamstress most of her life, but once she was introduced to floss, pattern and special fabric with holes, there was no turning back. Her day wasn't right if she didn't have time stitching and this held true up to her final day.&nbsp; She loved sharing with everyone, and each year would enter several projects in the county fair in her effort to help keep the hobby alive.&nbsp;

Wanda was preceded in death, by her husband, Dean; her sons, Rex and Ben; one son-in-law, Richard Schurle; a granddaughter, Renae Schurle, &nbsp;and one great grandson, Laine Goff.&nbsp; She was preceded also in death by her parents; four sisters, Wilma Hermann, Bonnie Stone, Jeannie Bradshaw and Ila Pultz, and three brothers, William Hollowell, Robert Hollowell and Wayne Hollowell.

She is survived by eight children; Don (Marcia) Goff of Keats, Larry (Kathy) Goff of Manchester, Garry (Chris) Goff of Manhattan, Janet (Jeff) Newell of Manhattan, Nancy (Brad) Carter of Shawnee, Wayne (Jane) Goff of Manhattan, Jane Keister of Manhattan and Clyde (Arlene) Goff of Manhattan; &nbsp;two sisters, Betty Wohler and Winona Hollowell; 24 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 28, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

=George E. Bissette, age 77, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023 in Randolph, Kansas. He was born on April 13, 1946 in Wendell, North Carolina.&nbsp;

On August 2, 1968 he married his wife, Marliese Najbor Bissette, in Kornwestheim, Germany.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife; a son, Aaron (Destiny) Bissette; daughters Tammy Bissette, Jeannette Shaffer; a sister, Brenda Grubb Lee; a sister-in-law, Barbara Murphy; and four grandchildren, Richie Shaffer, Isabella Galvan, Gabriela Galvan and Conner Mockerman.

&nbsp;He was preceded in death by his mother, Sudie Murphy; a son Earl Bissette; and a brother Jimmie Murphy, Jr.

&nbsp;A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2023 at Yorgensen Maloan Londeen Funeral Home with Father Gale Hammerschmidt presiding.&nbsp;

George E. Bissette

The world lost and Heaven gained a friend to all on Friday, September 22, 2023, when Rod Franz passed away after a short fight with pancreatic cancer. He danced the night away at his daughter's wedding reception just three months ago, wearing LED flashing sunglasses, literally lighting up the room. We are thankful he was able to practice his dance moves for the celebration Jesus had planned for him at the pearly gates.

The son of John A and Mary Franz, Rod was born in Hutchinson, KS on December 27, 1946. His mom and dad waited in the parking lot at Grace Hospital until the clock turned midnight before being admitted so they wouldn’t be charged for an extra day and that was his first (but not last) experience with always looking for a way to save a buck. Rod was raised in Buhler, KS. He was a star athlete – the quarterback of the football team and the captain of the basketball team and also played tennis and baseball. He was also very handsome.

He was Franz and she was Friesen and because they sat alphabetically by last name in most if not all classes and assemblies, Rod and Karen were either going to love each other or want nothing to do with one another. Fortunately for us, a love story began. They started dating their freshman year in high school and quickly became high school sweethearts.

Rod attended Tabor College majoring in education and math. After dating long distance (30 miles) in college, Rod proposed on the condition that Karen transfer to Tabor their senior year and they were married August 2, 1968. Classes started later that month and he would no longer have to sneak her in past visiting hours as they immediately became the men’s dorm parents at Tabor.

After graduating, they traded in Kansas buffaloes for African elephants as they taught at an American school in the Congo from 1969-1973. After their service in the Congo and bringing home their favorite souvenir, baby Kirk, they moved to Kingman, KS. Rod’s connections in Buhler helped him get a job teaching middle school math, no interview and sight unseen, which might have been telling. It didn’t take long for him to realize he did not enjoy teaching middle school math (perhaps the multiple times the house got egged contributed to that realization). He told Karen we are either going back to Africa where the kids value education or I’m getting out of teaching. He applied for a position at IBM in Wichita and his application was seen by a man who would become his boss at Mutual of New York (MONY). Rod sold life and health insurance to veterinarians for 25+ years. He moved on from MONY and worked for Sauder selling university and hospital furniture before he retired.

Rod loved sports. If the TV or radio was on, he was probably watching or listening to a game. He loved the Royals, Chiefs and K-State. He enjoyed carefully picking his lineup of winners for the NFL games of the week in his fantasy football league. He played sports growing up and he passed along his love of sports to his children. He coached his girls and many of their friends in rec softball (Go Showbiz and Go MONY!). He was at every one of his son and daughters’ games. Over the years, he officiated everything from middle school volleyball games to high school basketball games to college football games. He served as the tournament director for the 3A State Baseball Tournament and was the 2A State Basketball Tournament Volunteer Supervisor of Officials for over 25 years. He was a sports enthusiast like that.

Rod loved to volunteer. He volunteered his time, gifts, and talents to so many. In any given week, you might find him serving as the worship leader at Manhattan Mennonite Church on Sunday, picking up clothes at the Fit Closet on Monday, passing out food donations with Harvesters on Tuesday, driving 2 hours to sort clothes at the Mennonite Central Committee Warehouse in North Newton on Wednesday, calling bingo numbers at Via Christi Retirement Village on Thursday, making ham sandwiches for officials on Friday before a tournament weekend, or helping a friend move on Saturday. He had a servant heart like that.

Rod loved a deal and saving money. $2 for 365 days of “Free” Jr. Frosty Treats, yes please. A product on sale out of stock at the grocery store, no problem – rain check. Papa kept the My Coke Rewards program going for years, buying soda, probably with a coupon, and then entering codes to earn points to win prizes. We all learned to find the cheapest gas station in town from Papa, even if it meant driving 10 miles out of the way all to save $0.50. The neighbors up the street every Sunday, lovingly set aside the Kansas City Star Sunday coupons for him, knowing his dedication to finding the best deals and ensuring he never paid full price for anything. Because an obituary cost is calculated per word, Rod would probably have written his own as: "I loved the Lord and my family. EMAW". You get the point. He was disciplined with money like that.

Rod loved spending time with his family. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He had a tradition that if we were in town with him on his birthday, he would treat US to dinner. He even forced…I mean suggested that it would be fun for us to all go to the Pet Resort and walk the dogs on holidays as a family so we could more quickly finish the task and get back to lunch only to have to go back and do it again for more “family” time in the evening. He was our Papa like that.

Rod loved to talk. This is probably why he was a successful salesman. From selling insurance to furniture, he didn’t just sell a product, he made people feel special and known. There wasn’t anyone he wouldn’t talk to. This included the grocery store check-out staff, long after the groceries had been bagged and paid for and his wife was already halfway out the door to the car. He valued people like that.

Rod loved K-State. He ran the play clock at the Kansas State football games (and later for the Big 12) and ran the game clock at Kansas State basketball games for 30+ years. He would send K-State game programs and articles to his kids and almost every phone call, after discussing the weather, had something to do with the state of the football or basketball program. His blood ran purple like that.

Rod loved the Lord. God’s greatest commandment is to LOVE and Rod made sure that in every interaction he had with people, with the one exception he got ejected from the softball game he was coaching, he demonstrated love. His strong faith and how he lived it out influenced his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his friends and even strangers to live a life that would be pleasing to God. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15). Rod was kind. Rod put others first. He was love like that.

Rod is preceded in death by his parents, and his older brothers Richard and John.

He will be forever remembered by his one and only true love, Karen, his son Kirk Franz and wife Shannon, his daughter Kara Hackney and husband Troy, his daughter Jana Reed and husband Rich, his grand-children Kali, Maddie and Hailey Franz; Korryn, Blythe, and Canton Hackney; and Sebastian, Zoe, Trinity and Raelyn Reed and man’s best friend, his dog Coco.

Rod’s family would like to invite family and friends to join them in a Celebration of Life service at First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, KS on Saturday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m.. A reception will be held at Meadlowlark Hills following the service.  </figure>The world lost and Heaven gained a friend to all on Friday, September 22, 2023, when Rod Franz passed away after a short fight with pancreatic cancer. He danced the night away at his daughter's wedding reception just three months ago, wearing LED flashing sunglasses, literally lighting up the room. We are thankful he was able to practice his dance moves for the celebration Jesus had planned for him at the pearly gates.The son of John A and Mary Franz, Rod was born in Hutchinson, KS on December 27, 1946. His mom and dad waited in the parking lot at Grace Hospital until the clock turned midnight before being admitted so they wouldn’t be charged for an extra day and that was his first (but not last) experience with always looking for a way to save a buck. Rod was raised in Buhler, KS. He was a star athlete – the quarterback of the football team and the captain of the basketball team and also played tennis and baseball. He was also very handsome.He was Franz and she was Friesen and because they sat alphabetically by last name in most if not all classes and assemblies, Rod and Karen were either going to love each other or want nothing to do with one another. Fortunately for us, a love story began. They started dating their freshman year in high school and quickly became high school sweethearts.Rod attended Tabor College majoring in education and math. After dating long distance (30 miles) in college, Rod proposed on the condition that Karen transfer to Tabor their senior year and they were married August 2, 1968. Classes started later that month and he would no longer have to sneak her in past visiting hours as they immediately became the men’s dorm parents at Tabor.After graduating, they traded in Kansas buffaloes for African elephants as they taught at an American school in the Congo from 1969-1973. After their service in the Congo and bringing home their favorite souvenir, baby Kirk, they moved to Kingman, KS. Rod’s connections in Buhler helped him get a job teaching middle school math, no interview and sight unseen, which might have been telling. It didn’t take long for him to realize he did not enjoy teaching middle school math (perhaps the multiple times the house got egged contributed to that realization). He told Karen we are either going back to Africa where the kids value education or I’m getting out of teaching. He applied for a position at IBM in Wichita and his application was seen by a man who would become his boss at Mutual of New York (MONY). Rod sold life and health insurance to veterinarians for 25+ years. He moved on from MONY and worked for Sauder selling university and hospital furniture before he retired.To know Rod, one would know that…Rod loved sports. If the TV or radio was on, he was probably watching or listening to a game. He loved the Royals, Chiefs and K-State. He enjoyed carefully picking his lineup of winners for the NFL games of the week in his fantasy football league. He played sports growing up and he passed along his love of sports to his children. He coached his girls and many of their friends in rec softball (Go Showbiz and Go MONY!). He was at every one of his son and daughters’ games. Over the years, he officiated everything from middle school volleyball games to high school basketball games to college football games. He served as the tournament director for the 3A State Baseball Tournament and was the 2A State Basketball Tournament Volunteer Supervisor of Officials for over 25 years. He was a sports enthusiast like that.Rod loved to volunteer. He volunteered his time, gifts, and talents to so many. In any given week, you might find him serving as the worship leader at Manhattan Mennonite Church on Sunday, picking up clothes at the Fit Closet on Monday, passing out food donations with Harvesters on Tuesday, driving 2 hours to sort clothes at the Mennonite Central Committee Warehouse in North Newton on Wednesday, calling bingo numbers at Via Christi Retirement Village on Thursday, making ham sandwiches for officials on Friday before a tournament weekend, or helping a friend move on Saturday. He had a servant heart like that.Rod loved a deal and saving money. $2 for 365 days of “Free” Jr. Frosty Treats, yes please. A product on sale out of stock at the grocery store, no problem – rain check. Rod “Papa” Franz  - December 27, 1946 - September 22, 2023

Mitchell Allan Foote, age 64, of Manhattan, went home to meet his Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 21, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born January 12, 1959 in Orange, California, the son of 1st Lt. Ronald E. and Carol (Baker) Foote.

Although Mitchell was born in California, he was a Kansan through and through. When Mitchell was just 13 months old the family moved to his father’s hometown of Lyons, Kansas to be close to his grandparents, due to the tragic death of his father as a test pilot for the Marines. They then permanently settled in his mother’s hometown of Peabody, Kansas. Small-town childhood was a dream come true for an active boy, who loved to beoutdoors. He shared many adventures with his brother Roger, family, and close friends.

He attended Peabody schools. Mitchell graduated from Peabody High School in 1977, where he was very active in many activities and excelled in football. His all-state football accolades brought him to Kansas State University, where he played for the Wildcats from 1977-81, and pursued a business degree.

Mitchell was always creative and was a gifted entrepreneur. Learning many life lessons, working in the solar industry and water treatment field, Mitchell discovered his gift of serving others. He built a family business legacy in the financial advisory industry, Foote Financial Group. He served hundreds of clients for many years until his disease took away his ability to speak.

Mitchell attended and was a member of Faith Manhattan Church, formerly Faith Evangelical Free Church, for over 20+ years. He faithfully volunteered in many roles serving the Lord and others.

Mitchell loved sporting events, especially college sports. He was an avid KSU football fan and would only miss following his “Cats” for family activities. He was a member of the former player alumni society, the “Golden Cats”. Mitchell loved outdoor activities, especially fishing &amp; hunting.

He was married to his high school sweetheart, Cathy Lee Nightengale on June 24, 1978.

She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his beloved daughter Kristen Lee Wilds and her husband Brannon of Wamego, KS, two grandchildren Sophia Lee and Brock Michael who were his pride and joys. One brother, Roger Foote and his wife Laura of Canton, Ohio, father and mother-in-law Marvin and Sherol Nightengale of Burns, KS, brother-in-law Bradley Nightengale and his wife Diane of El Dorado, KS, andsister-in-law Linda Hess and husband Jim of Kearney, MO. and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins who considered him as close as their own immediate family.

A Celebration of Mitchell’s life will be held at a date to be announced in the future.

Charles Lynn Kaufman, age 81, of Manhattan, KS, died September 21, 2023, at Homestead Assisted Living in Manhattan.

He was born October 3, 1941, in Kingman, Kansas, the son of Walter and Florence Kaufman.

Charles played football (undefeated senior season), basketball and track while in high school. He also played the French Horn in the band and sang in the mixed chorus and glee club. He was the president of the Student Council his senior year and a member of the National Honor Society. Charles also obtained his Eagle Scout Award.

Charles was a Special Education Teacher and Counselor in public schools.

He lived and spent retirement years in Port Isabel, south Texas. Enjoying fishing on the bay, bird watching and the warm weather.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Maxine Fiero Kaufman and by his parents.

Survivors include two children: Shawna Kaufman-Frogley and her husband Kyle of Manhattan, and Gregory Kaufman of Phoenix, AZ; and one brother Steve Kaufman and his wife Marcia of Steamboat Springs, CO.

Cremation is planned with private family services.

 </figure>Wanda Lea (Hollowell) Goff passed away Monday, September 25, 2023, at her home in Keats, Kansas at the age of 95.Wanda was one of ten children born to William and Ada Hollowell.&nbsp; She and her twin brother, Wayne, were born June 12, 1928, in Barnes, Kansas.&nbsp; Over time the family moved to MayDay, Riley, and Keats.&nbsp; Shortly after her high school graduation, Wanda married her sweetheart, Dean Goff, on December 8, 1946.&nbsp; Together they raised their 10 children on a dairy farm two miles east of Keats.&nbsp; They celebrated 68 years of marriage before Dean passed away in February of 2015.&nbsp; Wanda had one love, words were never spoken of another.She was the best of the best.&nbsp; Taking on the role of homemaker, she raised her family on the dairy farm shared with her in-laws.&nbsp; She never shied away from hard work and providing for her family.&nbsp; After raising her family, Wanda went to work at K-State.&nbsp; She retired after 21 years (at the age of 77) as a baker from Derby Food Services.She did not need diamonds and jewels, gowns, and fur coats.&nbsp; But when she left home she always looked her best - combed hair, shined shoes, pressed clothes.&nbsp; Yes, she believed in following the rules: no white after Labor Day, coordinating accessories, and making sure things were the right fit.To many, Wanda was a quiet woman, but in the eyes of her family, she was so much more.&nbsp; She knew right from wrong and taught it by example.&nbsp; She didn’t gossip, she didn’t interfere, she didn’t try and tell you how to run your life, she wasn’t strongly opinionated.&nbsp; She never tried to be something she wasn’t.&nbsp; Often, it’s growing up and raising our own families or living as an adult in today’s world that we can see and acknowledge the sacrifices she made by always caring and putting others first. &nbsp;Her joys were many, from family gatherings to rides on country back roads, feeding her birds and collecting thimbles.&nbsp; Her true passion was counted cross stitch.&nbsp; She was no stranger to needle and thread, having been a seamstress most of her life, but once she was introduced to floss, pattern and special fabric with holes, there was no turning back. Her day wasn't right if she didn't have time stitching and this held true up to her final day.&nbsp; She loved sharing with everyone, and each year would enter several projects in the county fair in her effort to help keep the hobby alive.&nbsp;Wanda was preceded in death, by her husband, Dean; her sons, Rex and Ben; one son-in-law, Richard Schurle; a granddaughter, Renae Schurle, &nbsp;and one great grandson, Laine Goff.&nbsp; She was preceded also in death by her parents; four sisters, Wilma Hermann, Bonnie Stone, Jeannie Bradshaw and Ila Pultz, and three brothers, William Hollowell, Robert Hollowell and Wayne Hollowell.She is survived by eight children; Don (Marcia) Goff of Keats, Larry (Kathy) Goff of Manchester, Garry (Chris) Goff of Manhattan, Janet (Jeff) Newell of Manhattan, Nancy (Brad) Carter of Shawnee, Wayne (Jane) Goff of Manhattan, Jane Keister of Manhattan and Clyde (Arlene) Goff of Manhattan; &nbsp;two sisters, Betty Wohler and Winona Hollowell; 24 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 28, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2023 at the Keats Lydia Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the Keats Lydia Chapel and Community Center.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Wanda Goff

Marilyn J. Habluetzel, 86, of Clay Center passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor. &nbsp;She was born on April 2, 1937, the daughter of Francis and Twila (Todd) Avery, on the family farm in the Hayes Township.

&nbsp;She attended a small country school the first 2 years, being the only student in her grade. &nbsp;She then attended schools in Green, Kansas and graduated from Green High School. &nbsp;Marilyn met her husband, Howard Habluetzel, Jr. at a church youth group gathering and they were married on September 4, 1955.

She was very active at church, always there to help with dinners, programs and Bible School. &nbsp;Marilyn was a involved in the UMW and EHU women’s clubs at church and played piano or organ, starting at age 13 at the Hayes Church and then the Green and Morganville churches, playing into her 80’s. She also played for church services at Apollo Towers. &nbsp;Many of her lifetime friends were met at these churches. &nbsp;She also played for the Clay Center Elks Club and was presented with the Elks Lady Of The Year award.

Marilyn worked at the Soil Conservation Office until starting a family and then assisted with the family business, Clay Center Dehydrating. &nbsp;She also worked at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor, Cedar Court Motel and cleaned homes for many people. &nbsp;She was a member of the Clay Center United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; sons, Danny and Terry; brother, Ralph Avery; sisters, Ellen Paulson and Nelda Siebold and daughter in-law, Gail Habluetzel.

Marilyn is survived by her sons, Jerry and wife, Cindy of Clay Center and Donny and wife, Michelle of Wichita; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center, Kansas. &nbsp;The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church.

Interment will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Clay County, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clay Center United Methodist Church and can be sent in care of the funeral home.

Edeltraud T McCabe age 87, of Manhattan, Kansas, was welcomed into the arms of her Shepherd on September 23, 2023, with the love of her family surrounding her. Edeltraud was born in Moers Germany on January 22, 1936, to Georg and Karoline (Springfeld) Augsburger. Throughout her life Edeltraud served as a symbol of devotion, strength, and unity to her family. She maintained an immaculate home that was always welcoming and one that no one ever left hungry.

Edeltraud loved to share pictures and stories about her hometown of Neckarsteinach and life as a child living on a ship traveling the waterways of Germany.

She loved God and sharing His word and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

On January 22, 1955 she married her first husband Fritz Thieme. He preceded her in death. The couple welcomed five children to this union.

On October 6, 1965 in Pirmasens, Germany, as a widow, she married Milton E. McCabe and had two children. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include Anette (Thieme) McClellan of Manhattan, KS, Michael Thieme and wife Ulli of Schifferstadt, Germany, Friederike (Thieme) Vay and her husband Knut of Frankenthal, Germany, and Scarlett (McCabe) Donnert and husband Dave of Manhattan, KS; ten grandchildren Michelle (McClellan) Austin and husband Jon of Bolivar, MO, Markus McClellan and wife Nicole of Bolivar, MO, Benjamin Thieme of Schifferstadt, Germany, Daniel Vay, Tobias Vay and Simon Vay of Frankenthal Germany, Jen McCabe of Tampa, FL, Taylor Donnert of Franklin Indiana, Ryan Donnert of Manhattan, KS, Sarah (Cleer) Blakeley of Havana, IL and 14 great grandchildren. Paul Heine, 76, of Belvue, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (September 13, 2023).

Born May 16, 1947 in Wamego, Kansas, Paul was the son of Henry Herman and Lydia Emma (Martens) Heine.

Paul loved being outdoors working and tinkering around the family farm. &nbsp;He had also worked at Goodyear in Topeka, School District 321 in St. Marys and at Custom Woods in St. Marys.

Survivors include two children, Greg Heine (Melissa) of Bel Aire, KS and Ramona Rafferty of Topeka, KS; two grandchildren, Cassandra Heine and Keenan Heine; a brother, Wilford Heine of Topeka, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ruth Roberson.

The family will meet with friends at a memorial visitation on Friday evening (November 10, 2023) from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

Private inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Belvue, KS.

Francis A. Vering, age 90, of Marysville, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

Francis was born on August 9, 1933, in Marysville.&nbsp; He is the son of Antone A. and Mary A. (Wassenberg) Vering.&nbsp; He graduated from Marysville High School in 1950, and then served in the Kansas Army National Guard while farming.&nbsp; Francis married Constance “Connie” Claeys on August 19, 1967, at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Marysville.

As a young boy, Francis was highly involved in helping his mother and siblings with farm work and demonstrated a hard work ethic throughout his lifetime.&nbsp; He loved his family, farming, and working with a variety of animals.&nbsp;

He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Marysville.&nbsp; He had been a member of the American Legion for many of years.

Survivors include his wife Connie, his four children: Denise Liebetrau of Lakewood, Colorado, Alan (Heather) Vering of Waverly, Iowa, Steve Vering of Marysville, and Susan (Matt) Lord of Lawrence, two sisters: Cynthia Schuppert of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Kathleen Colross of York, Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren and a sister-in-law Carol Vering of Manhattan.

Preceding Francis in death were his parents, a brother Ferdinand “Buster” Vering, a sister Loretta Smith, and a son-in-law Keith Liebetrau.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Marysville celebrated by Father Quentin Schmitz.&nbsp; Honorary Bearers are Peter Vering, Katie Vering, Emily Vering, Ava Liebetrau, Ben Liebetrau, Jonas Lord and Estelle Lord. Charles William Frank Havlicek (Chuck), age 74 of Manhattan, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.

 </figure>Charles William Frank Havlicek (Chuck), age 74 of Manhattan, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.Chuck was born on August 11, 1949 in Pawnee City, NE, the son of Charles Frank and Maxine Helen (Jacoby) Havlicek. He grew up DuBois, NE, attending grade school in DuBois and graduating from Pawnee City High School in 1967. From there, he went on to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (“UNL”), where he was an active member of the AgMen Fraternity and developed his love for travel with a trip to Nepal through the IFYE exchange program. Chuck graduated in 1972 with Honors and a BS in Agriculture and Agronomy followed by a Master’s degree in Adult and Continuing Education in 1977.&nbsp;&nbsp;After graduation, Chuck worked as a Program Coordinator in the Division of Continuing Education at UNL until he and Barb made the decision to move their family to Manhattan, KS in 1985 for Chuck’s new job as the Assistant Director of Conferences in the Division of Continuing Education at Kansas State University. During this time at K-State, Chuck observed the need for more efficient and comprehensive registration software and began working on developing his own program. In 1988, this led to the creation of ACEware Systems, Inc. and Chuck’s ultimate departure from the University to run ACEware full time. He spent the remainder of his career as owner and CEO of the company until retiring in 2023.Chuck was married to Barbara Jean Ostergard on May 26, 1973 and they were blessed with two daughters, Becci and Christina.&nbsp;Chuck loved everything about life, he loved his family, and he loved his church! He was an active member of the Manhattan community as a member of the College Avenue United Methodist Church where he served in many leadership roles and capacities. He also volunteered as a 4-H Community Leader for a number of years, building on his lifelong love of 4-H as a youth and young adult. Additionally, Chuck served on numerous advisory committees for the Manhattan School District and as Co-Chair with Barbara for the Manhattan High School Booster Club.Even with all of his community involvement, family was always Chuck’s first priority and his children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved to travel, especially with his family, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and most anything outdoors. He was a master woodworker, completing countless special projects for friends, his children and grandchildren.Chuck is survived by his wife, Barbara, his daughter Becci Woods (Seth) of Apex, NC and his daughter, Christina Denton (Greg) of Houston, TX , five grandchildren, Zach Golonka, Ty Golonka, Harper Woods, Henry Denton, and Vivian Denton.
