Linda Lee Toy, 81, of Manhattan, died March 20, 2024 at her home in Manhattan.

Mrs. Toy graduated from Manhattan High School in 1960. She attended Kansas State University. She married Michael Toy on August 21, 1965 then worked as a secretary in the KSU Department of Electrical Engineering and retired in the Department of Agricultural Academic Programs Office in 2000.

She was born June 21, 1942 in Manhattan, the daughter of Leon and Alberta Matthews. Her parents and one brother, Milton Matthews, Newton, preceded her in death.

In earlier years, she was involved in numerous community activities. She was a member of the Mercy Regional Hospital Auxiliary and the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Michael; a son, Derek and wife, Marcia; three grandchildren: Kayla (Paul) Paz, Derrick (Lacie) Hoke, and Amanda (Eduardo) Rodriguez; eleven great-grandchildren; and a foster sister, Sandy Steele, Colorado Springs; Colorado, nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Karyn Toy.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 5:30p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday March 26, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday March 27, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. Private interment will be held at the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Esther I. (Graves) Umscheid, age 77, of Manhattan, died March 19, 2024, at her residence.

She was born December 20, 1946, in Westmoreland, Kansas, the daughter of Ross W. and Lena M. (Davis) Graves.

Esther graduated from Manhattan High School.

She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was the bookkeeper for her husband Clay, provided daycare for many years and was a wonderful cake baker and decorator.

Esther was a devoted member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliaries.

On March 15, 1963, she was married to Clayton J. Umscheid. Clay survives of the home. Additional survivors include her three children: Kenneth Umscheid, Rebecca Frakes (Kevin), and Timothy Umscheid (Jeanna); two foster children: Kelly Hearn (Susan), and Karin Stoner (Paul); seven grandchildren, four foster grandchildren; one great granddaughter and two foster great grandchildren.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27th, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Kerry Ninemire as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Valley View Memorial Park Cemetery east of Manhattan.

Esther I. (Graves) Umscheid

Janice was born January 28, 1941 in the mountains of Ashland, Kentucky to Milton and Lelah Franklin. She was a fireball from the start, with a smile that lit up a room. She met Lowell on a blind date (on St Patrick’s Day, 1962) while she was attending Taylor University. They were married on August, 31 1963 and, after a short time in Indiana, they embraced the Army life, traveling, making friends all over the world, and always welcoming newcomers to the neighborhood. She never met a stranger. Language was never a barrier, which led to “adopted” family members in Germany and throughout the Army community.

After raising a family and getting both of her girls through college, she proved that you are never too old to learn. She returned to school and became an RN. She loved caring for elderly patients and hearing their stories. She was willing to try about anything—oil painting, ceramics, sewing, gardening, baking, genealogy, and more. Her desire to keep learning about the world around her never faded and she actively read until her last day.

She was often seen in purple or blue to cheer on her favorite basketball teams Kansas State University and the University of Kentucky. She filled out her last bracket just days ago.

She freely gave her time, energy and treasure to create a better world. She was a member of many organizations, including Girl Scouts, General Federation of Women Clubs, VFW Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and numerous activities at College Avenue United Methodist Church. Yes, at one time she was even a clown, Mae May, cheering-up patients in nursing homes. She was always willing to jump into a Jeep or Military Ambulance with Lowell and pass out candy in a parade.

She leaves behind her husband Lowell May, sister Nancy Church, and a legacy of strong women-- her daughters Elizabeth Martineau (Gordon) and Laura Trinkle (Corey Pearl), granddaughters Rebecca Martineau (Ben) and Rachel Martineau (Edward).

We know that her grandson, Matthew Trinkle, brother Joe Franklin, and parents were waiting for her in heaven with a big hug.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Thursday March 28, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Bernard “Bernie” Dale Behrends, age 84, of Manhattan, died March 17, 2024, at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

He was born November 21, 1939, in Odell, Nebraska, the son of Berend and Foolke Viola (Gastman) Behrends.

Bernie attended Eighteen School, District # 69, Marysville, and then graduated from Marysville High School. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1962 with his B.S. in Industrial Education and received his M.S. in Industrial Education from Pittsburg State University.

He taught for 26 years in Industrial Education at USD # 383 in Manhattan, Preston High School in Preston, KS, and Leyden Community School in Franklin Park, IL. He also taught for 24 years as an Industrial Adult Education Instructor and worked one summer at the Goodyear plant in Topeka, KS, as a relief mechanic. After his teaching career he worked for 10 years as a Civil Service employee for Public Works and Civilian Personnel at Fort Riley. He was also active in farming in Riley and Marshall Counties.

Bernie was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, NEA, Kansas Industrial Education Association, and the Kansas Quality Woodworkers Association. Bernie was a member of the State Line Lutheran Church, rural Marysville, and later was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Manhattan where he had served on Council. He had also served on the Riley County Thrivent Board and the Lomack Board for Camp Tomah Shinga.

Bernie always stayed busy and he enjoyed having projects to do on the farm, woodworking, working on his classic cars and was a bee keeper for many years.

On March 29, 1970, in Topeka, KS, he was married to Carla Cormode. Carla preceded him in death on May 13, 2020. He was also preceded in death by his brother Arnold Lee Behrends.

Survivors include his son Russell Behrends and his fiancé Kathryn “Kate” Willson of Lawrence, and a large extended family.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 5th, with luncheon to follow at the First Lutheran Church, 930 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, with Reverend Stephen Haverlah officiating. Private family committal services will be held at a later date.

Wynette Hardy, beloved mother, and educator, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024, at the age of 86, at Regent Park Assisted Living and Memory Care, Wichita, KS. She was born on August 2, 1937, in Great Bend, KS to the late Preston Stanley McCarter and Birdie Leona Hollis.

Wynette spent most of her life in Kansas, both in her early years and ultimately settled in Manhattan, Kansas in 1970. Wynette attended Great Bend High School and graduated in 1955. She went on to attend the University of Kansas where she met and married her husband, Ronald George Hardy on August 10, 1957. She supported her husband through medical school and endured the many demands of military life and as they traveled and raised their 5 children. When her children were in their teens she followed her passion for education and earned her degree in elementary education from Kansas State University in 1978. She later obtained her master’s degree in education from the same institution.

After obtaining her degree, Wynette taught elementary education, first at Dwight Elementary and then ultimately at Ogden Elementary from 1979 to 2002, from which she retired. During her years of teaching, she affected the lives of many of her students, some who kept in touch with her well into their adult years.

Wynette was the devoted mother of five children: Stephanie Duley (Richard), Cynthia Fraser (Barry deceased), Brian Hardy (Mary Denier), Bruce Hardy (Lisa), and Jennifer Hardy.

She was a woman of many talents and passions. In her youth, she was a drum majorette in Great Bend and excelled as a baton twirler, even competing at the national level.

Wynette had a gift for cooking, particularly Southern cuisine and was known for her exceptional culinary skills. She also found joy in creating stained glass art and was actively involved with her church community, where she taught Sunday School and cherished her church family and friends.

Described as strong, straightforward, and nurturing at the same time, Wynette will be remembered fondly by all who knew her for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Wynette is survived by her 5 children, 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings (Wanda Watson and Valton McCarter).

A celebration of Wynette’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2024 at College Heights Baptist Church, located at 2320 Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

Helga Theresia Blazer, whose light and love touched so many, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the age of 83.

A dedicated partner, mother and “Oma” she was born in Czechoslovakia and raised her family in Kansas. Helga was preceded by her partner, John Smith, and sister, Rosie Champ.

Helga is survived by many including her three daughters and son: Tina Darby of Tustin, California; Sandra Bolin and her husband, Curtis, of Wamego, Kansas; Roberta Blazer also of Wamego; her son, Gary Smith and his wife, Robin, of Denver, Colorado. Helga is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Orville Jerry Smith, 88, of Junction City, Kansas went to heaven on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at Reflection Living in Wichita, Kansas.

A funeral service will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Marrs and Pastor Tim McCall officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the funeral at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Geary County 4-H, or Phoenix Home Care &amp; Hospice of Wichita.

Jerry was born June 20, 1935, in Junction City, Kansas, the son of Orville and Ruth (Miller) Smith. After graduating from Junction City High School, he served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 and the Army Reserves from 1960 to 1964. On July 11, 1965, he married Marlene Ruth Rahe, in Salina, Kansas. They moved to Junction City, Kansas where they lived and worked for over 50 years.

Jerry spent his career working for United Telephone Systems. During his time at UTS, he held many different positions from climbing poles to technical support. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City, serving as elder and volunteering within the church and school. He supported the Geary County 4-H as a volunteer as well as volunteering as an election worker for Geary County. In his free time, Jerry was an avid supporter of Junction City High School athletics and attended games with Marlene whenever possible. He was also a loyal Kansas State fan, attending and watching games to cheer on his Wildcats as often as he could. Other favorite hobbies included working on his prized 1950 green Chevy pickup truck and whittling wood creations for friends and family. Above all, he was a loving husband and father, caring grandpa and great-grandpa, loyal friend, and faithful servant of the Lord

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Marlene; one daughter, Pat (Armin) Mock of Wichita, Kansas; two granddaughters, Heather Mock of Wichita, Kansas and Beth (Marc) Huff of Lincoln, Nebraska; one grandson, Jeremy (Mallory) Mock of Derby, Kansas; son-in-law Ernest Melcher of Thorndale, Texas; five great-grandsons; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert J. Smith; one daughter, Cindy Melcher; one brother, John "Jack" B. Smith.

 </figure>Orville Jerry Smith, 88, of Junction City, Kansas went to heaven on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at Reflection Living in Wichita, Kansas.A funeral service will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Marrs and Pastor Tim McCall officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the funeral at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Geary County 4-H, or Phoenix Home Care &amp; Hospice of Wichita.Jerry was born June 20, 1935, in Junction City, Kansas, the son of Orville and Ruth (Miller) Smith. After graduating from Junction City High School, he served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 and the Army Reserves from 1960 to 1964. On July 11, 1965, he married Marlene Ruth Rahe, in Salina, Kansas. They moved to Junction City, Kansas where they lived and worked for over 50 years.Jerry spent his career working for United Telephone Systems. During his time at UTS, he held many different positions from climbing poles to technical support. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City, serving as elder and volunteering within the church and school. He supported the Geary County 4-H as a volunteer as well as volunteering as an election worker for Geary County. In his free time, Jerry was an avid supporter of Junction City High School athletics and attended games with Marlene whenever possible. He was also a loyal Kansas State fan, attending and watching games to cheer on his Wildcats as often as he could. Other favorite hobbies included working on his prized 1950 green Chevy pickup truck and whittling wood creations for friends and family. Above all, he was a loving husband and father, caring grandpa and great-grandpa, loyal friend, and faithful servant of the LordJerry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Marlene; one daughter, Pat (Armin) Mock of Wichita, Kansas; two granddaughters, Heather Mock of Wichita, Kansas and Beth (Marc) Huff of Lincoln, Nebraska; one grandson, Jeremy (Mallory) Mock of Derby, Kansas; son-in-law Ernest Melcher of Thorndale, Texas; five great-grandsons; and many friends. SFC (RET) Lorenzo M. (Rocky) Garcia Sr., 75, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away at home on March 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Lorenzo was born on January 25, 1949, and was raised in Texas with his seven other siblings. After Lorenzo's high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country honorably until his retirement in 2004.After retirement, he continued to work in order to stay active. Some of his jobs outside of retirement consisted of working for the recycling plant, landscaping, and taking care of his friends and family. Looking after the ones he cared about was always his main goal. He always put the needs of others before his. Lorenzo never knew a stranger, he made friends with everyone he met and was always very social. He made his rounds around town in order to talk with his friends and keep up to date with their lives. Whether he was taking a walk or bicycle ride, he made sure to be outside in nature.

He is survived by three daughters, Christina (Sheldon) Malicke of Baldwin City, Kansas, Edica Garcia, and Monica Austin both of Lawrence, Kansas; one son, Lorenzo (Kayla Clark) Garcia Jr. of Fleming Island, Florida; six siblings, Alex, Nora, Angie, Junior, Mimi, and Victor; four grandchildren and a host of other loving family and friends. He is preceded by his mother, Paulita Macias and his brother, Charlie Garcia.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024, 11:30 a.m - 12:30 p.m. followed by a graveside service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 1:00 p.m. with full military honors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Victor Duwane Leadón was born in Junction City, Kansas on June 16, 1964. He transitioned on March 8, 2024, in Denver, Colorado.

He loved all Kansas teams from college to professional basketball and baseball. The one team that took precedence for him were his "Chiefs!" Like his grandfather, who he was fortunate to have worked side by side with in Junction City, Kansas, Vic had a strong work ethic. Like his grandfather, Vic was a hard worker. Working was an important part of Vic's character. His fondest memories were the times he spent in Junction City with his grandparents. He also enjoyed working for the City of Denver as an employee of Parks and Recreation. He took joy and pride in landscaping the city that he and his crew did around the city of Denver. Although he enjoyed his work, his favorite pastime was being with his family and friends, laughing and sharing conversations. He was like his grandfather, James McQuiller, as he never met a stranger. He was friendly, outgoing and did not speak unkind words about other people. He will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know Vic was to love him.

Gilbert Arthur Green was born December 7, 1928 to Art and Maureen Green in Waterville, Kansas. He died March 18, 2024 in Abilene, Kansas. 

After graduating from high school, Gil served in the Air Force at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas for four years and met his wife Marjorie. He graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in Education and went on to his first teaching job at Herington Junior High in Herington, Kansas where he was a health and PE teacher as well as a coach.&nbsp; Gil moved to Abilene, Kansas where he taught and retired from Abilene Middle School after 35 years. He coached football, basketball and track. He also had a long career of refereeing volleyball, basketball and football, receiving an honor for 50 years in 2018. In the summer months, Gil was Camp Manager at Camp Mary Dell in Abilene. He was married to Marge Green for 68 years and had three children. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Nancy Hawley (Michael) of San Diego, CA and Lori Schartz of Wichita, KS. They have four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at the Abilene First United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Gilbert Arthur Green - December 7th, 1928 - March 18th, 2024

Alayne Grace Novotny, age 22, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away March 16, 2024 in Overland Park.

She was born on March 30, 2001 in Manhattan, the daughter of Willie and Kylie (Bramhall) Novotny. She grew up in Manhattan and graduated from Manhattan High School with the class of 2019.

Alayne grace was the most carefree person who always found the good in everyone. Grace couldn’t have been a more perfect middle name for someone who emitted so much gracefulness, no matter what cards life dealt her.

Alayne was known for her carefree and loving nature, bringing joy and happiness to all who knew her. Her beauty, both inside and out, radiated in every aspect of her life.

Her carefree spirit inspired those around her to embrace each moment with love and laughter.

Throughout her life, Alayne touched the hearts of many with her kindness and compassion. She had a deep love for her family and cherished the time they spent together.

In addition to her loving nature, Alayne had a natural beauty that captivated everyone she met. Anyone who had the privilege to meet Alayne was met with her mother’s beautiful blue eyes, her infectious smile and she was most likely twirling her hair.

Alayne loved music and good social gathering. Some of her favorite things were attending raves and festivals with her friends- where she was usually wearing something glittery. She also loved the color pink and was always up on the latest fashion and makeup trends.

Alayne is survived by her mother Kylie Novotny, her father Willie Novotny and his wife Michelle, her brother Matthew and her beloved dog Millie. She is also survived by her grandparents Matt and Beth Novotny of Pratt, Kansas and Nan and Ray Lisher of Frankfort, Kansas, as well has several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Alayne was preceded in death by her Grandpa Ron Bramhall, formerly of Frankfort, Kansas.

Nancy Ellen Weeks, 74, of Belvue Kansas, passed away on March 13, 2024 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born on July 12, 1949 in Wamego, KS. Nancy was the daughter of Edith (Lyddane) and Keith Weeks. Nancy graduated Wamego High School in 1967, then proceeded her education in teaching. Nancy taught for many years and later retired from the Americus school district after 30+ years of teaching. Nancy never wanted to stop working. After retiring from teaching, she continued to work at Stockgrowers State Bank for many years in Paxico, KS, she later retired at the end of 2023.

Nancy was also a life member (51 years) of Loyal Chapter #176 Order of the Eastern Star in Silver Lake, Kansas. She was also a former charter member of the Wamego Assembly #72 of Rainbow Girls.

Nancy is survived by her nephews, Robert Mundy of Admire, KS; Tony (JoAnne) Mundy of Yreka, CA; niece Terri (Scott) Nelson of Las Vegas, NV; and great niece Shelby (Jonathan) Lagerquist of Wamego, KS. Nancy also had a great nephew Grant Nelson, Las Vegas Nevada; great nephew Grant Mundy of Admire, KS, and two great nieces Rachel (Nicholas) Trollope of Pittsburg,KS and Oliva Mundy of Girard, KS. Nancy also had a great great niece Brooklyn Lagerquist of Wamego, KS, and was expecting another great great niece this coming spring. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents Keith and Edith Weeks, her two sisters, Loreen Weeks (Kraushaar) and Judy Weeks (Mundy), and her niece Barbara Zimmerling (Kraushaar).

Nancy loved being an aunt, and was the staple of our family. She had many friends throughout her life who thought the world of her and she will be greatly missed.

Nancy Ellen Weeks

Susan Palmer Swanke died on March 19, 2024, in Westmoreland Kansas from cancer.

The third of four children, Sue was born and raised in Chicago to parents Robert and Gertrude Palmer. Sue lived in the area until her early twenties. She left Chicago and went to nursing school, living in various places around the country until she settled in San Diego. It was there that she met Thomas &nbsp;Swanke, and the two married in 1984.

Sue became a nurse to help people and worked in hospitals throughout her career. &nbsp;She held many different positions, from the ER to the recovery room and everything in between. Never one to settle for the way things were, Sue was known for her compassionate care, and fought for the wellbeing of both her patients and fellow nurses.

&nbsp;A fiercely independent woman, Sue had many passions outside of her career. She was a member of the SCA while in San Diego, and could often be found taking care of horses or in the saddle. An avid gardener and birder, she transformed the yards of every home she owned, creating safe spaces for birds to land and feed. Sue also loved to sew, hand making her own wedding dress, along with countless Halloween costumes for her children. Finally, after being introduced to them by her children, Sue loved to play video games. She was very active online, and created many lasting friendships with gamers all over the country.

Sue was a force to be reckoned with. Her iron will, stubborn nature, do-it-yourself attitude, and sardonic humor will be impossible for anyone who knew her to forget. Once she set her mind to something, there was nothing that would stand in her way. Sue is survived by her brother Lynn, her son Peter, her daughter Heidi, and her grandson Miles. She was loved by all of us, and while her loss is painful, we are thankful that she is no longer suffering and hope she is reunited with the ones she loved.”

 </figure>Susan Palmer Swanke died on March 19, 2024, in Westmoreland Kansas from cancer.The third of four children, Sue was born and raised in Chicago to parents Robert and Gertrude Palmer. Sue lived in the area until her early twenties. She left Chicago and went to nursing school, living in various places around the country until she settled in San Diego. It was there that she met Thomas &nbsp;Swanke, and the two married in 1984.Sue became a nurse to help people and worked in hospitals throughout her career. &nbsp;She held many different positions, from the ER to the recovery room and everything in between. Never one to settle for the way things were, Sue was known for her compassionate care, and fought for the wellbeing of both her patients and fellow nurses.&nbsp;A fiercely independent woman, Sue had many passions outside of her career. She was a member of the SCA while in San Diego, and could often be found taking care of horses or in the saddle. An avid gardener and birder, she transformed the yards of every home she owned, creating safe spaces for birds to land and feed. Sue also loved to sew, hand making her own wedding dress, along with countless Halloween costumes for her children. Finally, after being introduced to them by her children, Sue loved to play video games. She was very active online, and created many lasting friendships with gamers all over the country.Sue was a force to be reckoned with. Her iron will, stubborn nature, do-it-yourself attitude, and sardonic humor will be impossible for anyone who knew her to forget. Once she set her mind to something, there was nothing that would stand in her way. Sue is survived by her brother Lynn, her son Peter, her daughter Heidi, and her grandson Miles. Sally Murrison, 71 of Chapman passed away at Stormont Vail Flint Hills Junction City, Kansas on Monday March 18, 2024. Sally was born April 18, 1952 the daughter of Howard and Dorothy Dean in Junction City. On December 11, 1971 she married James Murrison in Junction City, Kansas. To this union 4 children were born: Toni Meinhardt, Corey Murrison (Carol), Scott Murrison, and Brian Murrison. Sally was preceded in death by her parents. Sally is survived by her husband of the home, her children and her sister Susan Phelps (James) of Papillion, Nebraska.

She worked for civil service in finance for 16 years.

Opal was very talented.&nbsp; She was an amazing seamstress making clothes for her family. She made and sold crafts and had Dalton’s Upholstery with the help of her husband. She enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends. Her family was most important to her. She loved gatherings with her sisters and their families and spending time with or talking to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters Janet Lowrey (Mike) of Chapman, Carolyn Howard (Milton) of Junction City, son Danny Dalton of Bremerton, Washington, grandchildren Brandon Lowrey (Kris) of Oley, Pennsylvania, Daphne Anderson (Jeff) New Market, Alabama, Kurtis Howard (Julie) California, Missouri, Kelly Heindel (Dennis) of Milford, Chris Dalton of Seattle, Washington, Daniel Dalton, Robert Dalton, Greg Dalton all of Bremerton, Washington, eight great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren, sisters Edna Liccardi of Chapman, Lois Currie of Junction City, LaVera Heidel of Junction City, and Phyllis Serrault of Topeka.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son Derrald Dalton.

Opal I Dalton

H. Philip Howe, age 91 of Manhattan died on Sunday March 17th peacefully at his home.

Phil was born on July 3rd, 1932 in Manhattan, the son of Harold and Ruth Howe. He grew up in Manhattan and attended the Sacred Heart Academy schools. Even though Phil spent most of his time growing up in Manhattan, in the summer Phil would spend time on their family farms. Phil's dad grew up on a farm near Chapman and Phil's mom grew up on a farm near Solomon. Phil would talk fondly about being on the farms - fishing in the river and helping with the harvest and other farm activities.

Phil graduated from the Sacred Heart Academy in Manhattan in the spring of 1950. That fall, Phil enrolled at Kansas State University and joined the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. The four years at Kansas State were great years for Phil - the lifelong friendships he made with his Beta friends as well as attaining a degree in Business Administration. During the summers of Phil's college days, he and several of his friends worked at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. Later in life Phil and his friends would meet in Estes Park every August and hike in the Rocky Mountain National Park for a week. Phil loved those trips because he was able to recreate and relive some of his best memories of his college days with some of his closest friends.

On June 1st, 1957, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan Phil was united in marriage to Margaret Griffith. They were married for 57 years until Margaret's passing 10 years ago. Phil and Margaret had four children - David, Janet, Evan and Katy. David lives in Scottsdale, AZ, Janet Daniels and her husband Mike live in Phoenix, AZ, Evan and his wife Shelley live in Prairie Village, KS and Katy Doyle and her husband Tim live in LaGrange IL. Phil is also survived by 10 grandchildren - Maggie Freeman, Kate Buhrow, Jim Daniels, Alex Howe, Alicia Howe, Conner Howe, Megan Doyle, Brian Doyle, Clare Doyle and Amy Doyle. Phil also has 8 great grandchildren.

Phil started his business career in Manhattan as a Consumer Loan Officer for Union National Bank. His office was right downtown on the corner of 4th and Poyntz - in the middle of the action in the 1960's. After several years as an officer of Union National Bank, Phil decided to charter his own bank. After a long process of working with the Kansas Banking Department, Phil was able to get a charter for a new bank for Manhattan. In 1969 "Kansas State Bank" was officially opened. While the permanent bank building was being constructed at its current Westloop location, Phil and the staff of 3 operated out of a "trailer home" on the other end of Westloop. The joke was that don't worry so much about getting robbed in daylight hours, but rather worry about someone coming along at night and hooking up the whole bank to their pickup truck and driving away. One of their earlier promotions was to give away trees under the tag line "grow with us" I know that through the years customers would come up to Phil and say that the little tree they got was now fully grown.

Phil had other business interests outside of banking. He is on a lot of mailing lists and subscribed to many different newspapers and publications. He was always reading about and talking about the latest innovations in farming or ranching or about some new product. It kept him very busy. His interests also carried over to his duty to give back. As many in this community know, Phil has supported many charitable organizations here in Manhattan including the Manhattan Community Foundation.

In short, Phil had a very impactful life both for his family and for his community. He truly cared about doing the right thing.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 21st, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Kerry Ninemire as Celebrant. Private family inurnment will be in Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Dorothy (Mother Gilbert) Lee Gilbert, 95, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on March 15, 2024, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 3, 1928, to Charles and Mary Gertrude (Downs) Wilson in Taylorsville, Kentucky. Dorothy married her husband, Lifford, December 3, 1949, while they were living in Indianapolis, Indiana. She had seven children that she raised in Indianapolis: Michael Harwell, William Harwell, Ronald Gilbert, Deborah (Gilbert) Jones, Reginald Gilbert, Dwayne Gilbert, Holly Michelle Gilbert and her niece, Denise Gaddie. Later in life, she raised three of her grandchildren: Alyson Brown, Latoya Reed, and Janelle Jackson.December 3, 1949, she married her husband, Lifford Gilbert and were happily married for 36 years. During their early years of marriage, they were a part of a few churches in Indianapolis, but they made the decision to bring their family to Junction City so they could pastor the Pentecostal Church. Mother Gilbert was involved with The Pentecostal Church for many years. She had many responsibilities within the church such as being the First Lady, organizing the Women's of Faith Choir, and she started and organized the church's first prayer band committee.

She is survived by her two sons, Ronald (Norma) Gilbert and Reginald Gilbert; one daughter, Deborah (Sam) Jones and a host of other family and friends. She is preceded by her three sons, Michael Harwell, William Harwell, and Dwayne Gilbert; one daughter, Holly Michelle Gilbert and her parents, Charles and Mary Gertrude.

A visitation will take place at The Pentecostal Church, Monday, March 25, 2024, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service, Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at The Pentecostal Church. A committal service will follow at Highland Cemetery.

She was born May 6, 1928, to Henry and Veronica (Ekart) Ruhkamp in Marysville Ks. &nbsp;She attended St. Johns Catholic school in Hanover, Ks. &nbsp;She was a member of the St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Clifton, Ks.

She Married Lawrence (Bus) Alexander on November 4, 1947, at St. Johns Baptist Catholic Church ‘in Hanover Kansas. To this union 7 children were born. &nbsp;Rita was a housewife and home maker. &nbsp;She loved to crochet, quiltting, sewing, playing cards, loved to cook, and baked for different events and organizations and family get togethers and a mean coconut cream pie and cinnamon rolls to die for. &nbsp;She enjoyed spending time with all her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She was a member St. Mary’s Alter Society and Clifton America Legion Auxiliary.

Rita is survived by Kathleen (Jerry) Sorrell if Clyde Kansas, David (Linda) Alexander of Kerrville, TX, Ronald (Nanay) Alexander Emporia, Ks, Danial Aleander of Salina, Ks., Dennis (Carol) Alexander of Clifton, Ks., Cynthia (Randy) Dugan of El Dorado, Ks., Phyllis (Lowell) Reith of Salina, Ks., and one sister in law Nan Alexander of Sahse, Tx and numerous grandchildren, Great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and Numerous nieces and nephews.

Rita F. Alexander

James L. “Jim” Frohardt was born July 14, 1943 in Clay Center, Kansas the son of Emil Laverne and Myrtle Chamberlin Frohardt.&nbsp; Jim passed away March 3, 2024 at Stormont Vail Flint Hill campus in Junction City.

&nbsp; Jim attended the Upland School and graduated from DCCHS with the class of 1961.After graduation Jim worked for the Alida Coop, the City of Chapman in the capacity of a police officer and Chief of Police. Jim also served as long time Chapman Fire Chief as well as a member of Dickinson County Fire District #1. Jim operated the Frohardt Garage and farmed for many years.Jim married Kathy Manbeck on October 4, 1964 in Chapman. 

Jim is survived by his wife Kathy of the home, his daughter Tina Frohardt of Chapman, his son Shawn Frohardt of Topeka and his loyal four-legged son Riley. Jim is also survived by his grandsons Joel Jordan of Junction City and Trent Jordan and his wife Stephanie of rural Chapman, his sister-in-law Vicki Rehm (Dean) of Abilene and nephew Chad LIvingston (Michele) of Abilene, and Brian Livingston (Angie) of Olathe, KS and a niece Stacia Wiley (Darin) of Chapman as well as great nieces and nephew Kaylee Livingston, Tori and Jaxon Foy. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

A family visitation will be held at the Londeen-Overlease Chapel 206 W. 5th street in Chapman Friday evening March 22nd beginning at 6:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held Saturday March 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapman United Methodist Church 426 Sheeran Chapman, Kansas

 </figure>James L. “Jim” Frohardt was born July 14, 1943 in Clay Center, Kansas the son of Emil Laverne and Myrtle Chamberlin Frohardt.&nbsp; Jim passed away March 3, 2024 at Stormont Vail Flint Hill campus in Junction City.&nbsp; Jim attended the Upland School and graduated from DCCHS with the class of 1961.After graduation Jim worked for the Alida Coop, the City of Chapman in the capacity of a police officer and Chief of Police. Jim also served as long time Chapman Fire Chief as well as a member of Dickinson County Fire District #1. Jim operated the Frohardt Garage and farmed for many years.Jim married Kathy Manbeck on October 4, 1964 in Chapman. Jim is survived by his wife Kathy of the home, his daughter Tina Frohardt of Chapman, his son Shawn Frohardt of Topeka and his loyal four-legged son Riley. Georgia Marie Phillips, 96 of Abilene, Kansas passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Village Manor Nursing Home. Georgia was born on January 7, 1928 in Enterprise, Kansas, the daughter of George and Amy Haslouer. She grew up in the Enterprise area. She married Donald Phillips on September 22, 1947 at St. Andrew’s church in Abilene, KS. Don and Georgia had four children; Patricia, Jeanette, Sarah, and Charles.

Georgia was a homemaker during the early married years, and after the kids got into school, she worked for eight years as a nurses’ aide. She then drove a nine passenger school bus for the Chapman school district for six years. Georgia was a Girl Scout Leader for ten years and leader of the food’s class in 4H for six years. She enjoyed oil painting (many of which can be found in the children’s homes), gardening, and most any type of craft. She was also active in the Enterprise EHU group. She and Don had a standing monthly pinochle game with their Enterprise friends. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene.Her main interest was always with her children and grandchildren. She was always there for the kids growing up, but, she loved taking care of the grandkid’s; watching them for their parents, going to their sporting events, dances, 4H reviews, and anything else they might be involved in. Georgia Marie Phillips

Our world has become a lot less bright with the loss of our dear Frank.

Frank C. Parrett entered the world at Leavenworth, Kansas on March 15, 1936. He was the third child born to Glen and Katherine (Shortridge) Parrett, joining sisters Olive Mae and Dorothy. His brother Robert (Gus) followed a few years later. Frank moved as a youth with his family to Haddam, Kansas and thereafter forever considered it his hometown. After completing his education there he found his niche in alfalfa and feed commodity trading. He was a self-made man and thrived in this industry, cultivating lifelong friendships and contacts as only Frank could. He never met a stranger. He began his career in Yaggy, Kansas, moving in 1960 to Consolidated Blenders and then to Hillside Dehy in Uehling, Nebraska in 1963. Frank eventually became part owner of Scribner Alfalfa in the early 1970s. Among his many adventures is surviving an alfalfa pellet fire, during which he sustained significant injuries. Frank eventually sold his business and worked for Switzer Trading, moving and trading grain commodities from 1987 to 2001. He was even lured from his retirement by Tallgrass Commodities in Wamego, Kansas to help mentor the staff and grow the company. He cherished the friends that he made there and so enjoyed working into his sunset years.

Frank was blessed with two long marriages. He wed Francisca “Frisco” Quinn on March 17, 1956. They were married for 45 years, until her death on April 18, 2001. They had no children. Frank acquired a ready-made family upon his marriage to Alberta K. Lallak on September 19, 2003. He cherished her children and grandchildren as his own. He was a devoted husband, father and “Papa Frank.” He and Alberta spent their best years together, traveling the world by boat, plane, train and RV. He was a fixture for many years in row 10 at Country Stampede and enjoyed playing Pitch, Pinochle, Poker (really, any and all card games!) and Pegs &amp; Jokers with family and dear friends.

Frank was a character, full of pithy comments and astute observations about life, all the while befriending those in his path, from neighbors and co-workers, to store clerks and wait staff at restaurants. We always got special attention with Frank around! While he yearned to be home, his last days spent at Wellsprings of Westmoreland, Kansas were enriched by new friendships with the staff and fellow residents. The nursing staff there reported that if he wasn’t harassing them, they knew something was wrong.

Frank is survived by his wife, Alberta Lallak-Parrett, his children Steve (Deb) Shepek, Todd (Siri) Shepek and Johnette Shepek, four grandchildren, Erin (Kyle) Hedrick, John (Ashley) Shepek, Tim (Jenna) Shepek and Kaylee (Trent) Ulbrich, eight great-grandchildren, Kailee and Aiden Shepek, Wyatt, Audrey, Grace and Sophie Hedrick and Ava and Beckett Shepek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank delighted in the antics of his beloved dogs over the years—Clarence (a female, in spite of her name), Winnie Pooh and Maggie. His most contented moments were when he was driving the roads of Nebraska with Clarence perched on the seatback behind him or snuggled into his recliner with Winnie or Maggie on his lap.

Frank had a big personality and an even bigger heart. He will be so missed by those who loved him.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday April 5, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday April 5, 2024 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

Marvin Gould was born in Enfield, Middlesex, England to Amy House Gould, a classical and jazz pianist and Edwin Gould, a draftsman and engineer. In 1951, Marvin and his family came to the U.S. via the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association aboard the S.S. America. Their first home in the U.S. was in Kansas City and ten years later they settled in Texas. Marvin died of cancer in the same city where he first lived more than 70 years later.

Marvin’s passions were family, art, music and golf, among thousands of other interests. He was an endless seeker of knowledge and could hold a conversation with anyone. His sense of humor and wit are what drew people to him. Today, he would still be talking with the nurses if he could. We often joked he would win at Jeopardy if given the chance.

To appease his mother, Marvin was formally trained as a pianist and read and wrote music. During his teenage years in a rebellious streak, he took up the guitar, began playing rock ‘n roll and never turned back. One of his students wrote him a note saying, “you are a juke box hero.” To stay out of trouble, he played in a band during high school in venues around Texas. Later in Kansas, he became a member of Melvin and the Monotones and the Back Porch Blues Band. His solo performance was “Knockout” by the Bad News Blues Band. He was reciting lyrics to some of his favorite rock and roll music days before he died.

Marvin’s love of music translated into appreciating marks on a page and an understanding of time between notes and the space between lines. At the age of eight, his father gave him a Speedball lettering book, several pin points and a bottle of ink; with these tools he drew the Montgomery Ward catalog. Fascinated by lines on a page, Marvin developed a love of drawing that continued throughout his life. Art was his solace and his means of Marking • Time.

In 1969, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served as an airplane refueler along the flight line on Okinawa during the Vietnam Conflict. There, he developed an appreciation for the Asian culture and landscape, often reflected in his art work. He was honorably discharged as an E4.

After his military service, Marvin was a draftsman for a steel corporation in Houston and then branched out to sign making and billboard design for companies in Texas, Utah and Kansas. At one point during his career in Texas, he was painting a billboard and fell from the scaffolding. Later he joked, “I shouldn’t have stepped back to critique my work”. Marvin earned his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Sam Houston State University in the 1970s. Thirty years later, he returned to school and earned a Master of Fine Arts from Kansas State University. He was a graduate teaching assistant and then an instructor of art at K-State. He was passionate about teaching, and genuinely cared about his students. It was never just about art, but about life and learning about oneself.

While teaching and after his retirement, he also worked as a Gallery Tech at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art and assisted exhibit designers and curators with all aspects of display, design and maintenance. Marvin worked on the installation and design of many exhibitions over the years, one of the more difficult ones, especially related to signage, vinyl and lettering was Pete Souza: Two Presidents, One Photographer.

Marvin’s own works of art are displayed in galleries in Houston, Tulsa and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, in addition to homes around the country.

An avid athlete in high school, he played every sport, but baseball was his favorite. He developed a passion for golf and began teaching his daughter Ashley to play when she was two. That passion continued through January of this year when he was playing in 37-degree weather. He has certificates to prove two-holes-in-one, both on Kansas golf courses. One of his favorite memories was walking the Old Course at St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland on a beautiful fall day with his besties – Millie and Donna.

On St. Patrick’s Day (a date he could easily remember), Marvin and Rebecca were married in Denton, Texas. Daughter Ashley was his love. He was incredibly proud of her accomplishments and instilled in her a love of art, creativity, sports, music, how to fix stuff, and so much more.

Marvin cherished his many friends and colleagues including, Beth, Duane, Lindsay, Nelson, Raleigh, his golf buddies, art colleagues, and so many more.

He is survived by Rebecca, his wife of almost 44 years, his daughter Ashley Jager, son-in-law Robert Jager, his precious grandson Alex Jager, half-sister Elizabeth Davidson and many cousins in England. He is also survived by other family members including the Matochas, van Dijks, Schoemans, Bacons, Borrellos and his much-loved nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marilyn Susan Gould.

The family thanks the Manhattan and KU Medical Center nurses and physicians for the care they showed Marvin over the last months of his life.

A celebration of his life and art will be held later in the year.
