Doyle H. Fredrickson: Dad, Gramps and Great-Great Papa, passed peacefully with his sons and their wives by his side at the Clay County Medical Center in Clay Center, KS on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at the age of 89.

Doyle was born June 13, 1932 to Alvin L. and Vernie L. Fredrickson in St. Francis, KS. &nbsp;His family later moved to Oberlin, KS. He was the youngest of five siblings. He graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1950.

Doyle’s father passed due to an accident when he was 16. His older brother and wife, Don and Lois Fredrickson, moved back to Oberlin to help care and provide for his Mother and brother, Doyle.

They started a small grocery store on the Main Street of Oberlin, Don’s Grocery. After high school graduation he continued at Don’s Supermarket and eventually became the manager where he completed 38 years, retiring in 1986.

He then leased a local liquor store for a short time, became the marketing and sales director at the Oberlin Boat Factory for two years and then worked for Brown Motor Company as a salesman. Doyle started dating Joan (Jody) Jording when she returned to Oberlin from the Lutheran School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO to work for just a year in Oberlin to fulfill a scholarship commitment.&nbsp; Doyle and “Jody” were married on Jan.10, 1954 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church located in the country near Traer, KS. He took classes to join the St. John’s Lutheran church in Oberlin, KS. They had two sons, Gary and Kurt.

Jody passed on Dec. 16, 1998 just one month short of their 45th&nbsp;wedding anniversary. Doyle lost his wife, best friend and the “love of his life” and missed her daily for the rest of his life.&nbsp; He then moved to Wichita, KS in 2001 where he lived the next 20 years. His niece and her husband, Nancy and Terry Quan, were his best friends, helpers and medical aides and allowed him to stay alone and stay independent living until age 89. Doyle also met and had a friendship with Carolyn Johnson while living there.

The highlight for Doyle was watching his grandchildren: Karli, Kaine, Scott and Tom, grow up and attending many of their functions, graduations and events.

His last chapter of his life included visiting his great-granddaughters: “My Girlies”, Harper and Hattie Hubka in Clay Center, KS.

Doyle loved life, always lived it to its fullest and had many, many friends of all ages.

He is preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: June and Darren Schneider, Robert and Lucille, Ralph and Helen and Don and Lois Fredrickson.&nbsp; Also, passing were his wife, Joan, and Granddaughter Kylee Marie Fredrickson.

Survivors are Gary and Sarah Fredrickson, Clay Center, KS, Kurt and Stella Fredrickson, Kansas City, MO, grandchildren Karli Hubka and husband Brett, Kaine Fredrickson and fiancée Becca Clancy, Tom and Scott Fredrickson and Great-Granddaughters Harper and Hattie Hubka.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clay Center, Kansas.&nbsp; The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

Norma “June” Laha was born August 5, 1933, to Henry and Daisy (Hodge) Kuck in Fairbury, Nebraska.&nbsp; She died September 9, 2021, in Wakefield, Kansas. &nbsp;June and her family moved to the Hiawatha area in the 1940’s. She graduated from Leona High School in 1951 and went on to Highland Community College, earning a teaching certificate in 1953.&nbsp; While attending Highland, she met a fellow student and former Marine, Patrick Laha.&nbsp; They were married on January 23, 1953, in Hiawatha, KS.&nbsp; 

The couple moved to Sabetha to start their teaching careers. June had her first teaching job in a one room schoolhouse in 1954.&nbsp; Patrick and June had relocated to Perry and Winchester before settling in Centralia in 1961. June took time away from teaching to tend to her family. She was very proud of her five boys. June went back into teaching in 1967 and taught in several towns in and around Centralia, to include Seneca, St. Benedict, Corning, and Frankfort.&nbsp; Her beloved husband, Pat, passed away in 1975.&nbsp; June went back to college to complete her bachelor’s degree in education at Washburn University, graduating in 1978. She later obtained her master’s degree from Kansas State University.&nbsp; June moved to Wakefield in 1978. She taught in the Clay County School District until she retired in 1998. She continued to substitute for years.

 June was involved in the community. She was a member of the Mizpah United Methodist Church, Wakefield Library Board member and volunteered at Meadowlark Hospice in Clay Center.&nbsp; June left and impression on many people during her life. She was cherished by her family and her many friends. She was always quick to help whether it was a friend, student, or stranger. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grand mother.&nbsp; In Wakefield she will always be remembered as Grandma June

 In addition to her husband, June is preceded in death by her parents, eldest son Patrick H. Laha Jr.; brother, Henry Kuck; sisters, Marcene George and Clarlyn Kuck; and daughter in law, Margie Laha.

Patricia Lee Jury, 63 of Chapman passed away Saturday September 11, 2021 at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. She was born May 26, 1958 in Stuttgart, Germany, the daughter of William and Virginia (Magby) Myers. On August 18, 1978 she was united in marriage to David Jury in Junction City. Patricia was a homemaker. She also worked at nursing homes in Minneapolis and in Chapman. 

Patricia is survived by her loving husband, David of the home. Four daughters: Elizabeth (Jason) Roberts; Hannah (George) Scharff; Diana Jury; Christine (Andrew) Young. Eleven Grandchildren: JR, Hunter, Hannah, Kayle, Caitlin, Naomi, Joshua, Daymon, Luke, Kayleigh and Peter and five great-grandchildren. Her father: William Myers SR. Two brothers, William Myers JR and Kenneth Myers. Two sisters, Nancy Davenport and Susie Johnson. She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia.

Judith “Judy” Read, 79 of Solomon passed away September 8, 2021 at Salina Regional Hospital. She was born at the Claremore Indian Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma on June 14, 1942, the daughter of Calvin and Lora (Kerr) McCamish. Judy grew up in Craig County, Oklahoma and loved revisiting the “old home places” in the Vinita and Claremore areas. After high school she attended Draughon’s Business School in Claremore, OK. She came to Abilene in 1970 where she worked in several secretarial positions and at West’s IGA, Alco, and was also a daycare provider. She loved to travel, sew, read, and enjoyed cooking and canning from her garden. She was a girl scout leader, elementary school room mother, and enjoyed being involved with her daughters’ softball practices and games. She was a citizen of the Shawnee and Delaware Tribes of Oklahoma.

Family was her joy. She took care of both of her elderly parents and loved gathering with her family and extended family. She was an only child but was raised with cousins she called her brothers and sisters. Grandma Judy played an important role in the lives of her grandsons Josh Hudson, James, Jesse and Justin Glover.

On June 26, 1999 she was united in marriage to Robert Read. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and daughter, Dina Bruce. Judy is survived by her daughters, Lori Hasselman and Paula Reynolds of Lawrence, Kansas and a son, James “JR” Robbins of West Columbia, Texas. Eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

The family has chosen cremation. The children of Dina Bruce will host a joint Celebration of Life for their mother and Judy on September 18th at 11 a.m. am at the Hank Royer Band Shell in Abilene, KS.&nbsp; A memorial service for Judy will be also held at a later date when her children are able to gather in her honor. Alice M. Bowden passed away on Sept. 7, 2021 at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan, KS. Alice was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Wyandotte, MI to George J. and Susan (McPherson) Murray. Alice had a happy childhood spending summers with her family at her grandma’s farm and also her cottage on Cavanaugh Lake. Alice was an excellent student and spelling bee champion and skipped two grades during elementary school. Alice was also an excellent singer from an early age and first performed on-stage at the age of six. After WWII, Alice met veteran Robert Bowden, also from Wyandotte, at Michigan State University. They shared a love for music and were married on June 8, 1951. They had three children, Bob Jr., Andrea, and David. Alice raised her family in Troy, MI and was fortunate to be surrounded by incredibly wonderful neighbors over the years. She was especially appreciative of Don and Beverly Seidel, Dave and Jackie Fredrickson, and Jerry and Linda Reed. Holidays and summer vacations were usually with her sister Marilyn’s family including nieces Lisa and Elaine and nephew Michael. She worked hard and got a Master of Education degree from Oakland University and taught second to fifth grade for 25 years in the Avondale School District. She received recognition as an outstanding teacher and loved it when former students came back to visit her. After retirement, Alice devoted much of her time to singing in her church choir, a passion she shared with husband, Bob. There she formed a close bond with Music Director/Organist Steve Schlesing that lasted to the end. She had too many choir friends to list them all, but the longest friendship was with Ruth Parks. According to Alice, one of the luckiest things in her life was having her grandchildren, Lynne and Alex, as next-door neighbors. She loved the chance to share their young lives and walk them to and from school. Another very lucky thing was joining the Adult Learning Institute at Oakland Community College around 1995. There she made great friends Joan Anneberg, Mary Ann Marini, Barb Maniscalco, and Pat Limbird. Alice was particularly proud to be on the curriculum committee and be the spelling and grammar editor of the course catalog. Alice loved spending time and beachcombing on Sanibel Island, FL and reported going there at least 28 times over the years with her family. During her later years in Michigan, Alice appreciated the help and companionship of Dana Cowper and Diane Dettloff. After experiencing declining health, Alice moved to Manhattan, KS to be near her son, Bob, and daughter-in-law Ann in 2015. Alice prospered in her new home and made many new friends. Alice was a people person and loved her friendships with all the residents, nurses, aides, and staff at Via Christi. She was especially lucky to befriend fellow resident Caroline Mulhern and share their love of word play and spelling. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sisters Marilyn and Sylvia. Survivors include son Bob (Ann), Manhattan, KS; daughter Andrea, Boca Raton, FL; son David (Cheryl), Glen Allen, VA; nieces Lisa (Roger) and Elaine (Larry), nephews Michael (Mary) and Ellis, grandchildren David, Daniel, Lynne (Juan), Alex, Elena, Maya, and two great-grandchildren Abby and Emmy. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a future date for the family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alice had a happy childhood spending summers with her family at her grandma’s farm and also her cottage on Cavanaugh Lake. Alice was an excellent student and spelling bee champion and skipped two grades during elementary school. Alice was also an excellent singer from an early age and first performed on-stage at the age of six. After WWII, Alice met veteran Robert Bowden, also from Wyandotte, at Michigan State University. They shared a love for music and were married on June 8, 1951. They had three children, Bob Jr., Andrea, and David. Alice raised her family in Troy, MI and was fortunate to be surrounded by incredibly wonderful neighbors over the years. She was especially appreciative of Don and Beverly Seidel, Dave and Jackie Fredrickson, and Jerry and Linda Reed. Holidays and summer vacations were usually with her sister Marilyn’s family including nieces Lisa and Elaine and nephew Michael. She worked hard and got a Master of Education degree from Oakland University and taught second to fifth grade for 25 years in the Avondale School District. She received recognition as an outstanding teacher and loved it when former students came back to visit her. After retirement, Alice devoted much of her time to singing in her church choir, a passion she shared with husband, Bob. There she formed a close bond with Music Director/Organist Steve Schlesing that lasted to the end. She had too many choir friends to list them all, but the longest friendship was with Ruth Parks. According to Alice, one of the luckiest things in her life was having her grandchildren, Lynne and Alex, as next-door neighbors. She loved the chance to share their young lives and walk them to and from school. Another very lucky thing was joining the Adult Learning Institute at Oakland Community College around 1995. There she made great friends Joan Anneberg, Mary Ann Marini, Barb Maniscalco, and Pat Limbird. Alice was particularly proud to be on the curriculum committee and be the spelling and grammar editor of the course catalog. Alice loved spending time and beachcombing on Sanibel Island, FL and reported going there at least 28 times over the years with her family. During her later years in Michigan, Alice appreciated the help and companionship of Dana Cowper and Diane Dettloff. After experiencing declining health, Alice moved to Manhattan, KS to be near her son, Bob, and daughter-in-law Ann in 2015. Alice prospered in her new home and made many new friends. Alice was a people person and loved her friendships with all the residents, nurses, aides, and staff at Via Christi. She was especially lucky to befriend fellow resident Caroline Mulhern and share their love of word play and spelling. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sisters Marilyn and Sylvia. Survivors include son Bob (Ann), Manhattan, KS; daughter Andrea, Boca Raton, FL; son David (Cheryl), Glen Allen, VA; nieces Lisa (Roger) and Elaine (Larry), nephews Michael (Mary) and Ellis, grandchildren David, Daniel, Lynne (Juan), Alex, Elena, Maya, and two great-grandchildren Abby and Emmy. Aruna Nayyar Michie, aged 77, retired KSU Political Science faculty member passed away September 5, 2021 at Good Shepherd Hospice, Manhattan, after a five-week siege stemming from several long-standing illnesses. Aruna was born 9 August 1944 in the Naval Hospital, Bombay. Her father was Pran Nath Nayyar, at the time seconded from the British Indian Army to the Navy and serving on the signals ship, INS Talwar (actually shore based) for WWII. Her mother was Kusum Prasad, journalist and internationally known scholar. She was predeceased by her parents, her Michie father and mother in-law with whom she was very close, and younger brother, Kapil, her only sibling. Her parents were intimately involved for years with the Indian Nationalist movement and knew all the top leaders. They also instilled her with a deep social conscience that she retained throughout life. Among other things her parents were main instigators of the several weeks long February 1946 Indian Naval Mutiny (they called it a strike) beginning in Bombay and spreading to the whole fleet and into other service branches as well. Her father’s signals ship was central to communications. The mutiny was a result of widespread discontent among Indian ranks about living conditions and ill treatment. They made the point that although Indian military personnel remained loyal during WWII, the Brits could no longer count on their loyalty. It was time for the Brits to leave, thank you very much! The mutiny ended peacefully and without retribution, a hiccup along the way to Independence that came the next year in August 1947 when Aruna was three. Importantly, the mutiny gave a strong attention-getting and unforgettable message to the Brits. When Aruna was ten, the family moved to New Delhi. Her father became a consulting engineer. Her mother was earlier well established professionally as Kusum Nair, journalist and internationally known author on rural development based on research in India, China, Japan and the US. Her family home became an intellectual salon for meetings with friends in the international diplomatic corps, Indian politicians and officials, international scholars, authors, artists and others. Quite a rarified environment for a young girl. As a young girl Aruna attended a top end international boarding school in the lower Himalayas with primarily American ex-pat students and teachers, the reason she spoke with an American accent. Whenever the topic of Woodstock would come up in US conversation she would say “Oh, I was at Woodstock”, much to everyone’s amazement, and furthermore “I was there from first standard through graduation from high school in 1962.”, further occasioned by listeners’ confusion. And then she would have to explain that Woodstock is the name of her school …always good for a laugh. Aruna was a 1966 graduate of Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts, finding summer work in New York with the Ford Foundation. Finishing her undergraduate degree in International Relations, she returned to India where she became a local hire for the American Peace Corp as an associate director in the Northern Regional office in charge of programs and volunteers in the state of Rajasthan. It was there she met Barry Michie, a volunteer serving in Rajasthan. They were married in New Delhi at her parents’ home in an Arya Samaj ceremony 3 July 1968. Growing up a very urbane city girl, Peace Corps was her first experience with village India and culture, a venture highly supported and encouraged by her parents. Despite a bit of initial trepidation of stepping into the unknown, she readily took to it and continued so during married life of fifty-three years with rural projects and research in rural Rajasthan of her own and her husband’s. So, she became both a village and a city girl. Newly married both she and Barry entered graduate school together in 1968 at Michigan State University, supporting each other and completing PhD degrees, she in Political Science and he Anthropology. Both luckily found appointments at Kansas State, initially temporary replacements for faculty on sabbatical. Her position became tenure track and her husband eventually in International Programs. So, they did not suffer a commuting marriage common for many academic couples. Seventeen years into marriage a son Chetan was born in 1985 in Manhattan, welcomed with much joy and love. Chetan spent a year in India in the mid 1990s, also attending Woodstock, when Barry had a project with the Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur, investigating traditional agro-forestry practices in Rajasthan” . Chetan is now a restaurateur in Lawrence, Kansas. Aruna was proud of her Indian heritage, so indelibly part of her identity that she never gave up her Indian citizenship despite living in the US for fifty-three plus years as a green card holder. This put her in the curious situation of being a political scientist who never voted as she had no Indian constituency from which to vote; as a non-citizen voting in the US was out of the question. Aruna had a remarkable career at Kansas State, mentoring junior and other faculty and students including those applying for and many winning prestigious scholarships (Rhodes, Trumans, Marshalls) helping to put K-State on the map. She also received recognition for excellence in teaching. She served two terms as Faculty Senate President representing faculty to KSU administration and the Board of Regents putting her weight behind winning changes to health insurance, family leave and the KSU Handbook for both staff and faculty. For a number of years, she was an ombudsperson mediating disputes between faculty and administration. She touched many lives across K-State and is well remembered as someone kind, helpful and who readily stood her ground, making her point cogently, articulately and without rancor. In the last stages of her final illness Aruna became increasingly aphasic that started several years previously with Parkinsons that never affected her mind. Near the end she rarely could make herself understood, quite frustrating for her and most uncharacteristic to those who knew her in her prime. Unforgettably, three days before she died while still in hospital, she was able to find the words. Slowly, deliberately and with great effort she enunciated her last intelligible words when Barry and Chetan went to see her, “I…Iove…you…both. Don’t…worry”. She was not afraid of death and died painlessly and peacefully with both Barry and Chetan at her side to her last breath Although a secularist and not religious, a simple, powerful Yogic mantra is appropriate with her passing. OHM. SHASTRI, SHASTRI, SHASTRI Ohm signifies the all-encompassing cosmological essence of reality and consciousness, past, present, and future from which all things emanate and to which they return. Ohm is the primordial word present at the very beginning, not unlike “The Word” in the Book of Genesis. Shastri signifies, peace, harmony and love. For years she was adamantly against a memorial service. No services are planned. Andrew Ellsworth Sutton, 59, of Manhattan passed Tuesday, September 7th, while in the company of family, at his home. He worked for Reliable Transfer &amp; Storage in Manhattan, for 10-15 years, retiring in 2017. Andrew was born in Wamego, on December 11, 1961, the son of the late Henry Ellsworth and Carolyn Joyce (Shearer) Sutton. He attended Wamego High School, but later on received his GED in Topeka and perused a career as a certified auto-mechanic. Andrew is survived by two daughters, Morgan Sutton and her companion, Damian Cashman, of Manhattan; Melissa Henderson, of Manhattan; two sons Drew Sutton, of Manhattan and Brian Dekat, of Topeka. Also, surviving are three brothers, Randall Sutton, of Manhattan; Shawn Sutton, of Topeka, and Antonio Sutton, of Nebraska, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. Velma Marie Martin, 87, of St. George, KS, passed away at Ascension Via Christi, in Manhattan, Kansas, Tuesday, September 7, 2021. She was born on September 17, 1933, in Eudora, Kansas, the daughter of Francis Emerald Bryant and Ruth Marie Zimmerli Bryant.

She married Aubrey Martin on July 28, 1950, in Lakeview, Kansas; he preceded her in death in 2008. To this union, four children were born. Velma attended school in Eudora and became a homemaker after her marriage to Aubrey. Velma loved staying home and raising her children. Velma had a great love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she enjoyed camping and bird watching. Velma was well known for her creativity and her ability to craft anything into something beautiful. She loved to go fishing, often taking the kids to the lake during summer vacation, she also loved garage sales and thrift stores no matter the weather or distance. She and her sisters spent time together driving around hunting them out all the way to the last days of her life.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Francis, and Ruth (Zimmerli) Bryant, her brother, Delbert Bryant, and Jack Bryant. She is survived by her children Aubrey Martin Jr. (Roberta June), Kathy Shannon (Steve), Gerald Martin (Peggy), and Dianne Walsh (Roger), brother, John Bryant (Judy), and sisters, Eva Nichols (Dave), and Stella Puckett (Clyde). Six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Mount Sidney Cemetery in Linwood. John McReynolds, 74, of Manhattan, passed away at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society in Wamego.

Born May 22,1947 in Blue Rapids, Kansas, John was the son of John and Florence Bessie Ipson McReynolds.

John worked in construction and was employed at Bayer Construction Company for 34 years.&nbsp; He loved the outdoors and was known for always being there to help his friends on their farms.

Survivors include two children, John Michael “Mike” McReynolds (Maryvic) of Manhattan, KS and Angela Fensom (Phil) of Salina, KS; five grandchildren, Aaron McReynolds, Phillip Fensom, Brittny Robinson (Keegan), Nikolas Fensom and Shana Fensom; seven great grandchildren; and two brothers, William McReynolds and Owen McReynolds.

Mr. McReynolds was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation to celebrate the life of John McReynolds will be held Thursday evening, September 16, 2021) from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

John McReynolds

Norma Lee Louk, 86, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday (September 8, 2021) at the Home of the Flint Hills in St. George, Kansas.

Born July 19, 1935 in Nebraska, Norma was the daughter of William E. and Goldie Keck Fletcher. She was married to Richard Dean Scebold who preceded her in death. &nbsp;She married Alve Wesley Louk on September 19, 1969. He survives.

Norma was a member of the First Christian Church in Manhattan where she attended Bible study for many years and the Marysville Chapter Order of Eastern Star.&nbsp; She was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed the friendships she made with her quilting groups and was an avid Bingo player.&nbsp; She and Alve loved traveling throughout the country, hunting antiques and were active with a square dancing group and the Remarried group founded by Alve for many years.

Norma attended school and was a graduate of Marysville, Kansas High School.&nbsp; She was employed for many years at Kansas State University as an accountant with the Student Union until her retirement.

&nbsp;Survivors include her husband, Alve; three children, Vickie Kotyluk (Richard) of Bend, OR, Julie Grunz (Terry) of Salina, KS and Ross Louk (Tina) of St. George, KS; five grandchildren, Aaron Kotyluk (Carrisa), Stephanie Funnamark (Patrick), Chris Grunz (Rebekah), Melisa Sheet (Patrick) and Richard Louk; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Latta of Marysville, KS; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat “Abby”.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Billie Jean Timperly and Beverly Jo Miller.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning (September 14, 2021) at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp; in the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with Chaplain Linda Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the St. George Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

She was married to Richard Dean Scebold who preceded her in death. &nbsp;She married Alve Wesley Louk on September 19, 1969. He survives.Norma was a member of the First Christian Church in Manhattan where she attended Bible study for many years and the Marysville Chapter Order of Eastern Star.&nbsp; She was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed the friendships she made with her quilting groups and was an avid Bingo player.&nbsp; She and Alve loved traveling throughout the country, hunting antiques and were active with a square dancing group and the Remarried group founded by Alve for many years.Norma attended school and was a graduate of Marysville, Kansas High School.&nbsp; She was employed for many years at Kansas State University as an accountant with the Student Union until her retirement.&nbsp;Survivors include her husband, Alve; three children, Vickie Kotyluk (Richard) of Bend, OR, Julie Grunz (Terry) of Salina, KS and Ross Louk (Tina) of St. George, KS; five grandchildren, Aaron Kotyluk (Carrisa), Stephanie Funnamark (Patrick), Chris Grunz (Rebekah), Melisa Sheet (Patrick) and Richard Louk; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Latta of Marysville, KS; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat “Abby”.Norma was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Billie Jean Timperly and Beverly Jo Miller.Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning (September 14, 2021) at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp; in the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with Chaplain Linda Lewis officiating. On August 30, 2021, Richard “Miles” McKee, loving husband and father passed away at age 91 in Manhattan, Kansas. Miles was born on October 8, 1929 to Nell (Miles) McKee and Thomas F. McKee in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He was united in marriage with his piano duet partner and high school sweetheart, Marjorie (Fisk) McKee on June 22, 1952, in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. They raised one daughter Annell, and three sons, Dave, Richard, and John. Miles grew up on a ranch in Chase County, Kansas. He attended Kansas State University (KSU), received a degree in animal science, and was a member of the National Champion Livestock Judging Team. He enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps and served in the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant. Upon completion of his service, he worked as a beef herdsman on ranches in Kansas, Missouri, and Michigan. He returned to KSU as the herdsman for the pure bred beef unit. Miles received his Doctoral Degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 1968, and returned to KSU, joining the Animal Science and Industry faculty where he received numerous teaching awards and developed a reputation as a top beef cattle judge. His greatest legacy is as an academic advisor, guiding, mentoring, and caring for generations of students. Miles felt each student who walked in his office door was special and unique. Miles was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan where he sang in the choir and volunteered part-time as a host and receptionist in retirement. He enjoyed tending his apple trees, harvesting a bounty of apples that his wife Marjorie processed into apple sauce and pie fillings each year. For years Miles served as a “Burger and Brats Griller” at the Animal Science tailgate tent on Football Saturdays greeting current and former students from across the state. Miles was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, parents Nell and Thomas, one brother, Tom, and two sisters, Margaret and Jane. He worked numerous jobs in manufacturing and home improvement which trained him in many different areas. He was an independent family man all his life and played by his own rules. He moved to Texas to be close to his family in 1998. Anyone that met him knew he was a character who could not be forgotten.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Raymond Daymude.&nbsp;

Maxine (Gardner) Branfort died September 4, 2021, at Park Villa Nursing Home, Clyde, KS at the age of 94.&nbsp; Max was born in the Sherman community September 29, 1926, in Clay County, KS to Guy and Babe (Bouley) Gardner. She attended school there until the 5th grade when the family moved into Clifton finishing her education at the Clifton School.

On October 2, 1944, she was united in marriage to Bill Branfort, they were married 68 years. Max farmed alongside Bill and was a busy farm wife and mom to 3 kids. Although she was busy, she was always the first to volunteer for helping with school, church, sports and any activity her children were involved in.

After her kids were on their own, she was employed at the First National Bank and Turner Funeral Home in Clifton, KS.&nbsp; She was a volunteer for Meadowlark Hospice and Clifton Community Care Nursing Home. Taking care of others was her lifelong mission.

Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, doing embroidery work, she loved to play cards and was in several card clubs and bridge clubs.

She was a member of Faith United Church, the Willing Helpers Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary post 227 where she served as unit President and also served as District President.

She is preceded by her husband Bill Branfort; sons Phillip Branfort and Mark Branfort; her siblings, Raymond and Dorothy Gardner, Doran Gardner, Mary Rowland; and her beloved little sister Ada.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Schlesener passed away Wednesday September 1, 2021 at her home. She was born August 30, 1936 near Navarre, Kansas the daughter of Wilson and Dena (Townsend) Hoffman. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1954 and on July 10, 1955 she was united in marriage to Glen Schlesener in Abilene. Darlene was a bookkeeper for several businesses in the Herington area and was the owner of an antique store. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Schlesener, age 85, of Herington, will be 2:00 pm Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the New Basel Cemetery south of Abilene with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Mrs. Schlesener passed away Wednesday September 1, 2021 at her home. She was born August 30, 1936 near Navarre, Kansas the daughter of Wilson and Dena (Townsend) Hoffman. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1954 and on July 10, 1955 she was united in marriage to Glen Schlesener in Abilene. Darlene was a bookkeeper for several businesses in the Herington area and was the owner of an antique store. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her loving husband Glen of the home, daughters Terrie Greenemeyer of Herington, Vickie Schlesener-Crocker and her husband Johnny of Herington, brother John Hoffman and his wife Janet of Abilene, grandchildren Theron Greenemeyer and his wife Zoe, Dustin Greenemeyer, great grandchildren Isabelle Greenemeyer and Emma Greenemeyer. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Keith and Donald Hoffman. Cremation is planned and there will be no visitation. Edrena Adolph, age 77, of Riley, died September 3, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. Michael Raymond “Spanky” Fenwick (65), originally from Floyd Knobs, Indiana, passed away August 30, 2021 from ALS. Michael was born January 19, 1956 in New Albany, Indiana. His parents were the late Wilbur Gene “Joe” Fenwick, Patricia Roseanne Fenwick, and stepmother Shirley Fenwick. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wilbur Gene “Sonny” Fenwick. Michael served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1989. He then worked for Larson Construction from 1989 to 2019. Due to disease, Michael retired. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, of 37 years. His sons, Michael Bradley (Kristen), Derrick Michael (Angel), and daughter Danielle Nicole Hamilton (Justin). Michael had 11 grandchildren. Also, surviving are Michael’s sisters, Pam Rogge (Stuart), Diana Dalton (Wesley), and Charlotte Jacobi (Brian). Michael has a stepbrother, Albert Mills, and two stepsisters, Connie Tedesco and Tracy Burgin. Michael was extremely devoted to his family and a very hard worker. Dennis Ray Stauffer, 79, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, August 28th, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. Dennis was born in Westmoreland, Kansas on June 21st, 1942, and a son of the late Lois Beryl (Hough) and George Edward Stauffer. &nbsp;In 1960 he graduated from Westmoreland High School. He was united in marriage to Betty Lou Holder on October 6, 1962, at the St. Bernards Catholic Church in Wamego, they have been married for nearly 59 years. On his 62nd birthday, in 2004,&nbsp;Dennis retired after&nbsp;working for 40 years as an agricultural mechanic at both Meinhardt Equipment and Kan-Equip in Wamego. While in-between working and home life, he was a member of the Topeka Touring Society, which he and Betty enjoyed touring on his motorcycle to 49 states and Mexico. Dennis is survived by his wife Betty Lou Stauffer of Wamego, and son, David Wayne Stauffer and wife Cathy, of The Villages, Florida, also surviving is his brother, Donald Jay Stauffer of Mentor, Ohio. &nbsp;He is preceded in death by his parents George Edward and Lois Beryl Stauffer. John F. Lichtenhan, 87, of Wamego, Kansas, died Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at his home. He was a life-long resident of the community. John was born April 24, 1934, in Wamego, the son of George and Bertha (Riat) Lichtenhan.

He attended St. Bernard’s grade school and graduated from Wamego High School. John was an Eagle Scout and attended National Jamborees in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and Irvine Ranch, California. While in High School, John held the school record for many years in pole vault, vaulting over&nbsp; 11 feet while using a bamboo pole.&nbsp; He then attended Kansas State University and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. John then served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne from 1957 until 1960, stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

John was a born entrepreneur. He started working by delivering groceries for candy bars when he was too young to cross the streets, so he limited himself to the houses on his own block. He owned and operated many different businesses; Lichtenhan Excavating, Lichtenhan Plumbing and Heating, Lichtenhan Retail Liquor, The Trade Winds Supper Club, (twice), Guys Tavern, The Office, Ted’s Motel, and the Twistee Freeze, Spruce Street apartments, and the Hilltop Hotel. He also had some success raising hogs and with ostrich/rhea farming.

&nbsp;John served as a Wamego City Commissioner and Mayor from 1986 until 1990. He then served as a Pottawatomie County Commissioner from 1997 until 2001.

He was a great storyteller and enjoyed playing cards and chess.&nbsp; He loved to travel. One of his biggest disappointments was not being able to complete a trip to China due to the Covid Pandemic.&nbsp; John married Ronda Kolterman on August 6, 1960, having just celebrated their 61st anniversary. Ronda survives at their home. John is also survived by his children; John Bradford (Brad) and Lisa Lichtenhan, both of Austin, Texas, Brenda Straub (Bernard), Wamego, Linda Greenberg (Alan), Morristown, New Jersey, Kendra Khoshabe (Steve), South Barrington, Illinois, and Melissa Harris, Nashville, Tennessee; his grandchildren; Eric Straub, John Straub, Nichole Dreiling (Phil), John Daniel, Paul Lichtenhan, Lacy Lichtenhan, Skyler Greenberg, Ally Khoshabe, Abby Khoshabe, and Jonah Khoshabe; and his great-grandchildren, Piper, Axle, Margo, and Greta; his sister, Rosemary Soelter, Topeka. John was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego, Kansas. Father Mike Peterson will be the Celebrant. John F. Lichtenhan

Betty Mae Hodgins, 88, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died at her home on Thursday, September 2, 2021. She had been a member of the community for twenty years.

Betty was born on May 5, 1933, in Wamego, the daughter of Loren and Mary (Duncan) Picolet. She was raised in Frankfort and graduated from Frankfort High School.

Betty married Harvey Ogden and only after a short time, he was killed in a logging accident. Betty then married Virgil Keller. They lived in Riley until they later divorced. She then married Billy Hodgins and moved to Mississippi. They also were later divorced.

Betty spent many years as a homemaker. She also cleaned houses for local area families and was a waitress at the Calico Inn in Riley. While living in Mississippi, Betty drove thirty miles to attend Beauty School and graduated as a licensed Beautician at the age of fifty. She ran her own shop and did hair in her home while there. Betty then moved back to Kansas.

Betty loved to dance, and she loved to sing. For a short time she sang and played in a local band. She also played bass guitar. She enjoyed gardening, loved all animals, but especially her pet dog, Dolly and her cat, Bernie. Betty was very independent and frugal. Even after losing her eyesight in the last years of her life, she insisted on living in her own home, and did so very successfully.

Betty is survived by her children; Amber Shuman, Manhattan, Aaron Keller (Anestatia), Westmoreland, and Joe Keller, St. George; her grandchildren, Tyler Keller, Wichita, Blake Keller, Kansas City, Missouri, Bryan Keller, Lawrence, Sarah Denning (Sean) South Korea, and Holden Moyer (Brianna), Jacksonville, Florida, and her great-grandchildren, Gemma, Poppy, and Arlo; her siblings, Merle Picolet, Davenport, Iowa, Jim Picolet (Connie), Frankfort, Darlene Nemecheck (Elaine Griebel), Falls City, Nebraska, and Judy Fleeker (Charles), Manhattan. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Dean Picolet, Marvin Picolet, Dale Picolet, and Dorothy Simons.

Edna Louise Palenske, age 101, of Alma, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Bonner Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Edna was born April 17, 1920, in Alma, Kansas. She was the daughter of Henry Laging and Ida (Soelter) Laging.

On March 27, 1941, Edna married Roy Edgar Palenske in Alma, Kansas. Roy and Edna spent their 71 years of marriage on their farm in the beautiful Flint Hills, near Alma, before Roy passed away on April 3, 2012. Edna and Roy had two children, Gary Lee and Ray Gene. They grew a variety of crops and livestock on the farm, raised large flocks of turkey and laying hens, and also bred pedigreed Cairn Terriers. Edna was a very independent and resourceful lady and continued to live on the family farm after Roy’s death until she was 96 years old. Edna was a prolific master quilter and was well known for her exquisite hand-made quilts and sense of humor. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, fishing, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edna was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Alma, Kansas.

Among Edna’s survivors are her son, Ray Palenske, of Basehor, Kansas; three grandchildren: Debra Burton (Shawn) of Basehor, Kansas, Brian Palenske of Basehor, Kansas and Charla Rasmussen (Robert) of Grand Island, Nebraska; and five great-grandchildren: Lauren, Celia, MacKenzie, Allison, and Christopher. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Edgar Laging; two sisters, Ella (Laging) Lundberg and Olga (Laging) Mogge; and her son, Gary.

A memorial service for Edna will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, at the Peace United Church of Christ, Alma. Inurnment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Alma.
