Lifelong Sherman County resident Jim Flanders, 86 passed away 
peacefully on the Kuhrt Ranch, August 31, 2021. He was an only child, 
born to Raleigh B. Flanders and Gertrude (Kuhrt) Flanders on June 17, 
1935.

Jim was born into an industrious family that started the legacy of 
the Kuhrt Ranch in 1892. His mother was a schoolteacher, the only 
sibling of four in the family to marry, and Jim was the only descendant.
 He was a treasured son and nephew.

Along with his family, Jim spent much of his childhood working with 
livestock and showing cattle at the Denver Stock Show, the Kansas City 
Royal, and numerous state and county fairs.

He later graduated from Edson High School in 1953, where he 
participated in basketball, football, baseball, track, student council, 
F.F.A., glee club, and the junior-senior play. His senior year, he was 
voted “Most Popular” in his class. &nbsp;Jim enjoyed the Edson community and 
continued those friendships throughout his life.

He spent his college days in Manhattan, Kansas, and graduated from 
Kansas State University in 1957 with a degree in Agriculture and Animal 
Husbandry. He was an honor student, member of Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma
 Delta and the recipient of the &nbsp;Capper Scholarship. Jim was part of the
 judging team, a member of Farmhouse fraternity, and was a cook and 
houseboy for Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Shortly after graduation, he returned to the Kuhrt Ranch and met his 
future wife, Janice Meier, a schoolteacher and coach at Edson high 
school. They were married on May 23,1959. Jim and Jan accepted Christ 
shortly after they married. They intentionally lived their life for 
Jesus at home and by serving others.

To this union, there was one daughter, Fawn, and two sons, Blake and 
Brent and an adopted son, Mark. In the 47 years of marriage to Jan, they
 spent much of their time attending their children’s activities which 
included sports, music, and 4-H projects at the county fair. Jim had a 
passion for livestock and gardening and was a mentor for many young 
people. He was encouraged to see the legacy continue on the farm with 
his grandson, Paul Flanders and granddaughter, Sarah Starns, and six 
great grandchildren.

Jim’s wife, Jan, had a two-year battle with cancer and passed away on
 November 20, 2006. Soon after, he remarried, Annette Franklin in 
December of 2007. &nbsp;He quickly became an extension of Annette’s Avon 
business and was known around town as the “Avon Man.” Jim was loved by 
all her children and families and shared many travels and visits with 
them.

In January of 2019, Jim came to Kansas City to stay with his 
daughter, Fawn, for cataract surgery. Shortly after his arrival, he was 
diagnosed with cancer and began treatment.

During Jim’s extended stay, he liked making new friends, going on 
daily outings and being pampered in his daughter’s home. His favorite 
things were to explore new restaurants and coffee shops around the city.

Jim returned to the farm in June and was honored and cared for by his
 son, Brent. He and his wife, Diana and family sacrificially supported 
him daily and took special care to ensure his end-of-life desires were 
fulfilled.

Jim was at peace in his relationship with the Lord and had faith in 
where he would be spending eternity. Attending church was a highlight of
 his week. He enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends and looked 
forward to hearing the weekly sermon by his son, Preacher Brent.

He enjoyed a special bond with Dale Schilling and Bob McKnight and treasured so many friendships throughout his life.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Raleigh and Gertrude (Kuhrt)
 Flanders, his wife Janice (Meier) Flanders, second wife Annette 
(Franklin) Flanders, son, Mark Flanders and granddaughter, Hannah Lee 
Flanders.

He is survived by his daughter and two sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jim Flanders

Carol Janet Ebert, 79, of Wamego, Kansas, died Thursday, September 2, 2021, at her home, following a battle with cancer. She was a long-time resident of the area.

Carol was born on September 16, 1941, in Wakefield, Kansas, the daughter of Horace and Pauline (Vanderwilt) Wood. She attended grade school and graduated from Wakefield High School. Carol then graduated from the University of California - Berkley with a bachelor's degree and then a master’s degree from Sacramento State University in English.

Carol taught English for 4 years at Kansas State University and then twenty-five years at Highland Community College. She also taught many years online. Prior to her teaching career, Carol was a farm wife and owned and operated an arts and crafts business, Ebert’s Herbs, which made homemade crafts filled with herbs and Potpourri. She also milled her own wheat flour and published two different wheat cookbooks. Carol was known for her dozen variations of cinnamon rolls, pies and donuts.

Carol loved to garden, raise flowers and bake. She was an experienced traveler and enjoyed bringing her family along. She traveled to Alaska, Iceland, and Europe. She enjoyed going on various cruises and visiting places across the country. Carol loved her family and especially loved the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.

Carol is survived by her son, Neil Ebert (Laura) of Wamego; her grandchildren, Logan Ebert, Megan Ebert, Emmy Ebert, and Sadie Ebert, all of Wamego; and her brother, Allen Wood, Wakefield. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Rachel Ebert, and her sister Nelva Peck.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 10, 2021, at St. Luke Episcopal Church in Wamego. Reverend Casey Rohleder will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Wamego City Cemetery. Carol will lie-in-state, on Thursday, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 pm. Jayson Patrick Ebert, 21, of Wamego, Kansas, died Sunday, September 5, 2021, at his home.

Jayson was born on January 25, 2000, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of James Edmund Ebert II and Jennifer Lynn (Weixelman) Ebert. He attended grade school in Wamego and graduated in 2018 from Wamego High School. Jayson enjoyed sports, and played for the Red Raiders in basketball, football, golf, and baseball. He was an exceptional athlete and excelled in everything he did.

Since graduation, Jayson has worked as a heavy equipment operator for Ebert Construction. He enjoyed hunting, playing golf, video games, and time out at the lake, especially jet skiing.

Jayson is survived by parents; his son, Kasyn James Ebert, and Kasyn’s mother, Madison Jager, Wamego; his maternal grandparents, Pat Weixelman (Angie), Wamego, and Susan Anderson (Roger), Wamego; his paternal grandparents, James Ebert (Dorothy Winterman), Wamego, and Alice Martin (Robert), Manhattan; his siblings, Jacob Eichem (Paige Divine) and their daughter, Sutton, Wamego, his twin brother, Justin Ebert, Wamego, and Jessica Ebert, Wamego. Jerry S. Dye, 81, of Junction City, KS, passed away September 1, 2021 at Good Shepherd Hospice Center in Manhattan, KS. Cremation has taken place per Jerry’s wishes.

Jerry was born in Villa Rica, GA on December 18, 1939 to William H. Dye and Mary E. Dye. Due to his father’s service in the military, Jerry attended many different schools including 2 ½ years in Wuerzburg, Germany. He ultimately graduated from Junction City high school in 1957. Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp and frequently said “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” He loved to work on cars, so he owned and operated his own auto mechanic business in Junction City for 40 years.

Jerry was a member of First Baptist Church in Junction City where he served as a Trustee and a Deacon for many years. He was also a member of Gideons International since 1991.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Terrell “Ted” Dye, and 2 infant bothers. He is survived by his wife, Gail Dye; two sons, Scot (Amy) Dye of Manhattan, KS; Darin (Holly) Dye of Fredericksburg, VA; granddaughters Caitlin Dye and Evangeline Dye; grandsons Daniel Dye and Nicholas Caudle; sister, Megan Elaine Rose of Villa Rica, GA; many other family members and friends.

The family has planned a visitation time with family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 7th and Jefferson, Junction City.&nbsp; A memorial service will be held at a later date and inurnment will be in Welcome Cemetery in South Eastern Geary County.

Jerry S. Dye

Mary Evelyn (Ihloff) Watson was born July 19, 1920, in Greensburg, Ks.&nbsp; 
She was the daughter of Charles Belmont Ihloff and Helen May Cobb 
Ihloff.&nbsp; Mary was three years old when the family moved to Jetmore where
 her dad bought the Ford Dealership.

She was involved in many school activities and Girl Scouts as she 
grew up.&nbsp; Upon graduation from high school, Mary went to Kansas

Science with the class of 1943.&nbsp; She then moved to Junction City, Kansas
 where she was a Social Worker.

In 1948, she and Major Henry (Luke) P. Watson were married at Fort 
Riley Chapel in Fort Riley, Kansas.&nbsp; Mary followed her husband to many 
Army Airbases around the world.&nbsp; They were fluent in Spanish and 
French.&nbsp; They were both accomplished artists and visited every Art 
Museum and library possible.&nbsp; Having no children, their lives together 
were focused on each other and their extended families.&nbsp; They loved us 
well.

They eventually bought a beautiful home in Summerville, South 
Carolina.&nbsp; After Luke’s passing, Mary moved to Dodge City, Kansas where 
she could be close enough to take care of her aging mother.&nbsp; In 2007, 
Mary moved to Bramley Place in Jetmore to be closer to Carolyn and 
family as she aged.&nbsp; On Feb. 19, 2018, Mary went to live in the Long 
Term Care in Jetmore.&nbsp; She remained there until her passing on Sept. 4, 
2021 at the amazing age of 101!

Mary had the wonderful gift of being so interested in and loving the 
people around her.&nbsp; So even though her contemporaries are gone, she left
 behind family and friends that will always remember her and smile.

Survivors include: niece, Carolyn (Joe) Tarman, Jetmore; nephew, 
Charlie W. Ihloff, Dodge City; seven great nieces and nephews; 
twenty-three great great nieces and nephews and a long time friend, 
Sherri Merica.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Howard W. Ihloff; 
nephew, Timothy W. Ihloff and a great nephew, Joshua Lynn Tarman.

Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 10, 
2021 at Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.&nbsp; Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8

Mary Evelyn (Ihloff) Watson

Helen Mae Devlin was born on April 5, 1935, on the family farm north of 
Red Cloud, Nebraska and passed away on September 1, 2021, at the 
Heritage Nursing Home in Red Cloud. Her parents were Paul and Grace 
(Davis) Jelinek. Helen attended both rural and town schools and 
graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1952. She attended college in 
Kearney for two summers and taught in rural elementary schools in 
Webster County for two years.
 She met the love of her life, William Dale Devlin, in Red Cloud when
 she was 15 and he 17 and they were a couple for the rest of her life. 
While Bill was in the service and later during Bill’s time in Korea 
during the Korean War, she wrote him a letter every day. Following 
Bill’s return, they were married on June 13, 1954, at the Methodist 
Church in Red Cloud. Following marriage, they moved to Omaha, Nebraska 
where Bill continued his service in the Air Force. In 1956, they moved 
to the family farm in Pawnee Township in Smith County, Kansas, where 
they resided for the next 65 years. Two sons were born to this union, 
James and Daniel, and a daughter, Kathleen.
 Helen was a homemaker, a dedicated mother and was a partner with 
Bill on the farm. She enjoyed cooking for her family and having 
everyone to her house for holidays. She had a passion for her dogs and 
cats and for gardening, particularly growing tomatoes and sewing clothes
 for her family. She enjoyed her childrens’ events and loved her 
grandchildren and having them visit the farm. She belonged to the Womer
 Church for many years and attended whenever she could, participated in 
other neighborhood activities and served many years as a community 
leader for the Busy Bears 4-H Club.
 Helen is survived by her husband, Bill, her son James and wife Lynda
 of Smith Center, Kansas, her son, Daniel and wife Marjorie of 
Manhattan, Kansas, her daughter Kathleen Lewis of Hastings, Nebraska, 
grandsons, Rohn Lewis and Allen Devlin and granddaughters, Alisha Young,
 Sarah Brunner, Danielle Mertz, Allison Kohlmeier, Seana Lewis and Rylea
 Lewis and five great- grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister,

My dad has passed away. Man through all my life I have never once had to do or say something as hard as saying that one sentence. As a child and young adult I never knew or appreciated all he did for me, but now that I look back I can see that everything he did was always for me. He did or said everything possible to make sure I succeeded and I think he felt my failures worse than I did. I think he blamed himself for any and everything that went wrong. He loved me that much. I don't know that I will ever be loved like that again. How do you say goodbye to that? I just keep thinking back to all of these random times with him. How he would take me fishing and every time he would have to get up and get something and I was watching his pole a fish would bite. Or how he would hide in the hallways and scare me when I was watching scary movies at night. I remember him teaching me to ride my bike, or making me a barbie house since he couldn't afford to get me one. He never knew how much I loved that or how much it meant to me as I got older and had kids and truely understood the work he put into it just so I could have one. I remember him standing outside the delivery room when my son was born. He would come and see me every day. He was my best friend. You know I told him many things when we knew his time was coming. I told him I loved him I told him he was a great dad. But I never had the courage to tell him how strong I thought he was. I think it would have embarassed him. At 17 this man went to Vietnam and saw so many many horrible things. He lived through situations we will only see in movies. He had to live through nightmares. He came home, not to be loved and called a hero, but to be shamed and condemed. He didn't come home alone though, he brought home many deamons in his mind. He brought home memories he would have to relive constantly. Then he met mom. She was the love of his life. I remember how they told me on their first date he told her he was going to marry her. They were a strong couple who had an even stronger love. She was always his number one and he was hers. I think mom was the only one he ever told about what he went through. Mom was the only person he trusted with that. How someone could have that going on in his head and still be such a good father and husband speaks to his strength. That was only one of his battles. Dad also battled alcoholism. He fought that every single day and after that gambling. He fought them and to me he won. He never went back to them. One thing dad wouldn't or couldn't do was back down. He was strong and brave. He saw it as is job to protect and take care of us all. From mom to even my children and husband, dad would do whatever it took. I knew no matter what time or day, if we hadn't talked for an hour or a month I could call him and he would be there. No matter what was going on dad made sure we had what we needed. And he made sure to tell us he loved us, even as a 40plus year old woman my dad would call just to tell me that he loved and missed me. Dad was also an amazing grandfather. He loved my kids and had cute little nicknames for all of them. He had a special bond with each and every one. I am so saddened that they wont have more time with him. \I know he is always going to be with me in my heart, but I'm sorry i'm selfish I wanted him to be here forever. I will miss him every single day and think of him every single day. I know in my head and in my heart that I had the best dad who loved me. Ditto Dad.

Phillip Percy Dugas

Brian Lynn Foreman, 49, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at his home in Junction City. Cremation will take place. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. Brian was born December 30, 1971, in Ashdown, Arkansas the son of Lonnie and Teresa (Trusty) Foreman. Brian married Karen Waller March 8, 1994 in Gulfport, Mississippi. In 1997, Brian and Karen moved to Junction City, KS. Brian was a roofer and roofing supervisor the biggest part of his life. In 2013, he started a flooring business "Brian's Piece of Work" with his daughter Briana. For eight years they worked together to build their business in the Junction City and Geary County area. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing and kayaking. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as brothers Charles Stanley Strom of Enid, Oklahoma, Lonnie Strom of Dwight, Kansas and sisters Genevieve Glessner and Martha Jane Wood both of Junction City, Kansas. Merwin moved to New Hope Services of Valley Center, KS in 1988. While there he loved to socialize and spend time with staff and his peers. His favorite activities included having his hair cut, interacting with local school children that came to visit, Bingo, Art Therapy, and Karaoke ...just to name a few. Merwin was never seen without one if his favorite hats on or drinking a mountain dew. He loved his caregivers at New Hope, and he always made them smile. A graveside service and burial will be at the Dwight Cemetery in Dwight, Kansas on Thursday September 2, 2021, at 10am. Robin R. Johnson age 64, died in Salina, Kansas on August 28, 2021. She was born in Clay Center, Kansas on July 11, 1957, to Raymond and Florene (Lippe) Robinson.&nbsp; Robin grew up in the Clay Center community and was a graduate of Hays High School and attended two years of online education through the University of Phoenix. She married James Johnson on July 02, 1988. He survives of the home. Robin worked for Phillips Lighting for 16 years and was currently a receptionist for Russell Stovers in Abilene, Kansas. William “Bill” O'Donnell, 72 died August 20, 2021 in Topeka, KS.&nbsp; He was born on May 2, 1949 in Clay Center, the son of Max and Arlene (Mabie) O'Donnell.&nbsp; Bill was raised in Clay Center community.&nbsp; He was active Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.&nbsp; Bill was also active in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he served as an altar boy for Sunday Mass through grade school and Jr. High.&nbsp; Bill was a graduate of the CCCHS Class of 1967 and received first team, all state honors in basketball his Senior year.&nbsp; He attended the University of Notre Dame and played football for coach Ara Parseghian.&nbsp; Bill received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Notre Dame in 1971.&nbsp; In 1975, He received his MBA from UMKC.&nbsp; He worked as a bond broker in the Chicago area. For over 30 years, Bill refereed sporting events from grade school to the NCAA level until COVID shut down of all sports, ending his career in March 2020.&nbsp; He enjoyed the interactions with the players, especially when one would visit with him, years later, about a game Bill a had officiated.&nbsp; Before returning to Clay Center, Bill was a member of St. Huburt’s parish in Hoffman Estates, IL and Holy Family parish in Inverness, IL.&nbsp; He had recently joined the parish council at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.&nbsp; Bill was preceded in death by his father.

On Monday August 30, 2021, Richard “Miles” McKee, loving husband and father passed away at age 91, in Manhattan, Kansas. Miles was born on October 8, 1929 to Nell (Miles) McKee and Thomas F. McKee in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He was united in marriage with his high school sweetheart, Marjorie (Fisk) McKee on June 22, 1952 in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. They raised one daughter Annell, and three sons, Dave, Richard, and John. Miles grew up on a ranch in Chase County, Kansas. He attended Kansas State University (KSU) receiving a degree in animal science. He enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps and served in the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant. Upon completion of his service he worked as a beef herdsman on ranches in Kansas, Missouri, and Michigan. He returned to KSU as the herdsman for the pure bred beef unit. Miles received his Doctoral Degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 1968 and returned to KSU, to join the Animal Science and Industry faculty where he received numerous teaching awards and developed a reputation as a top beef cattle judge. His greatest legacy is as an academic advisor, guiding, mentoring, and caring for generations of students. Miles felt each student who walked in his office door was special and unique. Miles was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan where he sang in the choir and volunteered part-time as a host and receptionist in retirement. He enjoyed tending his apple trees, harvesting a bounty of apples that his wife Marjorie processed into apple sauce and pie fillings each year. For years Miles served as a “Burger and Brats Griller” at the Animal Science tailgate tent on Football Saturdays greeting current and formal students from across the state. Marcella M. Mignano, 84, of Manhattan, passed away Monday, August 23rd at the Onaga Community Hospital in Onaga, KS. Marcella was born in Whitestone, NY on September 23rd, 1936, the youngest child of the late Edward V. and Marcella (McLaughlin) McEneaney. After high school in her hometown, she graduated from Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, NY. While at Ladycliff, she met a young West Point cadet and the love of her life, Bruce Phillip Mignano. They married on December 27th, 1958, and began the adventurous life of a young military couple. Five children followed as they moved around the globe from Kentucky to Korea, France to Kansas. During her husband’s numerous and often lengthy deployments to Korea, Vietnam, and Germany, Marcella managed her young family with a loving but firm hand. Never one to sit idly, Marcella enrolled in a Computer Programmer/Operator course at what was then the Manhattan Area Vo-Tech as her children busied themselves with the school. After successfully completing that training, she was hired as a Computer Operator at Sink &amp; Gilmore Accounting where she worked until the empty nesters moved to San Jose, CA, and subsequently West Lafayette, IN. Everywhere Marcella lived throughout the world, she always found ways to volunteer her time and talents to give back to the community – educating school children on good dental hygiene (Ft. Riley, KS), leading a Girl Scout troop (Ft. Riley, KS), working for the Red Cross (Verdun, France, and Seoul, Korea), running the food pantry for St. Julie’s Catholic Church (San Jose, CA) and Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church (West Lafayette, IN), embroidering baptismal gowns, baking Eucharist bread, and hand-crafting macramé decor at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (Manhattan, KS), and working at the Mercy Hospital gift shop (Manhattan, KS). Her family was her life. She loved to get into shenanigans with her sister, sing with her children, and spoil her grandchildren with Dairy Queen ice cream, summer London Broil barbeques, and the money given for work that was promised but never actually completed - all while never leaving Bruce’s side. Marcella is survived by her husband, Bruce of the home; Jacqueline Carpenter of Henderson, Nevada; Gary Mignano, Theresa Boatman (Rick Boatman), Thomas Mignano (Kathy Mignano), and Mary Mignano, all of Manhattan. Douglas Eugene Wallace, (Doug), 67, was born July 22, 1954, in Garden City to Earl William Wallace and Velma E. (Schlegel) Wallace. He died peacefully, August 22, 2021, at the Good Shephard Hospice House, Manhattan, KS. He was surrounded by his family who were telling stories, crying, and laughing at his many adventures. Doug had a knack for BS and making people laugh, but was a hard worker and only worked three main jobs in his life, all in Kansas - Schreiber Motors in Garden City; Fertilizer Manager for Syracuse Co-op for 30 years, and yard manager/dispatcher for Mead Lumber, Manhattan for 10 years. He also helped deliver The Manhattan Mercury for over nine years, starting when his son, Jesse first got a route. Doug used this time to teach Jesse to drive, and sometimes their dog, Noodle, tagged along. Doug was also a sports fan. He coached youth baseball, softball, football, women's softball, and played baseball or co-ed softball well into his 50's. He met his future wife, Becky, while playing softball and they enjoyed many years playing on co-ed teams and going to a few Royals games. They married on January 22, 1988, in Syracuse, KS. Other sports included golf where he was a board member of the Tamarisk Golf Course, Syracuse; football (Go Chiefs and KSU); watching college basketball (never missed a KU game); supporting family members swim/dive competitively; bowling; playing cards; and fishing. He looked forward to going with the Jerry Schmidt family on their annual fishing trips, and especially this last year when his health was failing. A highlight was helping his grandson, Ryder, catch his first fish at the recent Wallace reunion. During his years in Syracuse, Doug could be found building or fixing things in his garage, down at the Co-op, or golf course, or helping to remodel and landscape his and Becky’s century-old home. After retirement, and bouts with cancer, Doug could be found watching The Andy Griffith Show or Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, or in the kitchen cooking burritos, jerky, cookies, brownies, and even pie, or smoking and grilling outside. He grew his own peppers and made the hottest salsa! Many were recipients of his culinary products. He was a fan of garage sale and loved making deals. Daughter, Jordan has followed in his footsteps. Doug is survived by his wife Rebecca (Becky), Manhattan, KS; daughter Elizabeth (Chelsey) Rangel, son-in-law Javier and grandchildren Breña and Ryder, Aurora, CO; daughter Dana Watts and husband Jonathan Morgenstein, Arlington, VA; daughter Kari Watts and granddaughter Taylor Lembright, Manhattan; daughter and son Jesse, both of Manhattan, KS. He also leaves behind a brother Richard (Vicki), Camdenton, MO; a favorite sister Earlene (Brian) Specht, Morrow, OH; brother Dennis (Vicki) Battlefield, MO; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Connie Fulkerson, 66, of Manhattan, died August 20, 2021, at Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice in Manhattan, Kan. Constance Eileen Nelson was born Sept. 12, 1954, in San Diego, Calif., to Paul R. and Barbara J. (Haskin) Nelson, while her father was in the Navy. Because of her father's work with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., she and her family lived in numerous towns: Topeka, Wichita, Pratt, Abilene, Salina, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Kan., and Webster Groves, Mo. Connie was an active member of the Girl Scouts for 10 years. She graduated from Buhler (Kan.) High School in 1972, earned an A.A. degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1974 and a B.A. in English and journalism from Fort Hays State University in 1977. She was a yearbook editor and photographer at all three schools. After graduation, she worked for about two years as co-editor of the weekly Bucklin Banner and Protection Post newspapers in western Kansas. She then moved to Hastings, Neb., where she worked for the Cornhusker Press, a professional printing company. In 1982, she started working as a production coordinator for Student Publications, Inc. (now the Collegian Media Group) at Kansas State University. On Aug. 2, 1986, she married the love of her life John Walter Fulkerson at the First Christian Church in Manhattan, Kan. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2001. They had one son, Alex, born June 7, 1989. When the Journalism Education Association moved its national headquarters to K-State in 1988, she was asked to be its administrative assistant and bookstore manager. During her years with the organization, she also helped plan the biannual national conventions and was a copy editor for the organization's Communication: Journalism Education Today magazine. She retired after 32 years at JEA in 2020 and was the recipient of the organization's highest honor, the Carl Towley Award, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to scholastic journalism and exemplary work to improve journalism education. Genealogy was her favorite hobby for more than 40 years, and she enjoyed sharing her research with family members and connecting with distant relatives through genealogy websites. Calvin Wayne “Cal” Myron, 79, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Good Shepherd Hospice House.&nbsp;

Cal was born October 3, 1941, in Torrance, California, the son of Thor C. and Hilda (Andrade) Myron.&nbsp; He attended grade school in California and graduated from Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California.

In 1963, Cal married Rosann Bonanno in Torrance, California.&nbsp; They had four daughters, and later divorced.&nbsp; Cal then married Mary Jo Mullen; they also divorced.

For most of Cal’s adult life, he was a construction contractor, building both commercial and residential buildings. For many years, he owned his own construction business in Signal Hill, California. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing golf and bowling.&nbsp; He was an avid football fan, with his long-standing team of choice being the Oakland Raiders, now the Las Vegas Raiders.&nbsp; Cal was an avid reader and especially enjoyed action mysteries by Clive Cluster.&nbsp; Upon starting retirement in Kingman, Arizona, he ultimately relocated to Manhattan where he became a member of the DAV Auxiliary, Unit 28.&nbsp;

Cal is survived by his three daughters: Kari Myron, Trabuco Canyon, California, and her daughter, Riley Sage Beeler; Karin Hansen, St. George, and her children: Kevin, Tayler Skye, and David; and Kristin Myron Gray (Steve), Manhattan, and her daughter, Jilliann Isabella; Cal’s siblings: Roger Myron (Ninfa), Memphis, Tennessee; Mag Ross, Mission Viejo, California; and Donna Johnson, Rancho Santa Margarita, California.&nbsp; Cal was preceded in death by his daughter, Krista Ann, his parents, his ex-wife, Mary Jo, his sister, Frances Christensen, and his son-in-law, Jeffrey Beeler.

Kirk Michael Jones, 63, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. He was a long-time resident of the area.

Kirk was born January 6, 1958, in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, the son of William A. and Wynona Schnegelsiepen Jones, Sr. He attended grade school and graduated White City High School in 1976. He then graduated from Manhattan Technical College with a certificate in Heating and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Kirk worked thirty-four years for Manhattan USD 383 as a custodian. He loved his job, but he loved the kids more. Kirk was so well liked that at the time of his retirement, a surprise party was held for him at his home, and they ended up needing to block the street to accommodate the number of well-wishers. Kirk did not want to retire but was forced to do so because of his health. Even then, he managed to work some part time.

Kirk was passionate about music, all kinds of different music. He played the guitar, piano, trumpet and trombone. He coached T-Ball and softball when his kids were in the leagues, and when they were older, he played in the local Volleyball and Baseball leagues. Kirk was a avid and loyal K-State fan, and was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Kirk married Carol TenEyck on November 10, 1979, in Manhattan. She survives at their home.

Kirk is also survived by his children; Heather Corbin (Steve), Big Springs, and Christopher Jones, Manhattan; his grandchildren, Taelor Marker (Dylan), Ogden, Cailey Corbin, Brynne Corbin, and Kaigen Corbin, all of Big Springs; and his great-grand daughter, Scarlett Marker. Kirk is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Artie Jones, Don Jones, and Fred Schnegelsiepen.

A Celebration of Kirk’s life will be held at a later date and will be announced. The family suggests memorial contributions to Woodrow Wilson Elementary and Amanda Arnold Elementary Music Departments, and those may be sent in care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.&nbsp;

Continued education at McHenry Community College where he received two Associate Degrees along with being named in the Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges for the 1978-1979 school year. He married Julie Dvorak in 1985 and from that union he had two sons, Robert and Kenneth Retzlaff. In 2004 he married Cindy (Lucinda) DeWitt and gained two step-sons, Jeremy and Justin DeWitt. He was employed by John Crane, Inc. for 20 plus years where he reached the status of Plant Manager for the Crystal Lake, IL division. He was then employed by the Auth-Florence Corporation, in Glenndale Heights, IL as Plant Manager and was relocated to Manhattan, KS. He began playing guitar and singing at a young age and was in numerous bands throughout his life. His life was filled with love for his wife, family and his genuine love of music. Predeceased by: Father, Albert, mother Beverly and niece, Jody Retzlaff. Walter Eugene Retzlaff - June 6, 1955-August 19, 2021

David R. West, age 71, of Manhattan, died August 24, 2021, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. He was born February 21, 1950, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Earl Benjamin “Ben” West, Jr. and Doris O. (George) West. David graduated from Manhattan High School in 1968 and worked at Ag Press during high school. He served from June 16, 1969 to January 7, 1972 in the United States Army and was honorably discharged at the rank of Specialist-5. He served one tour in Vietnam. David had received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Two Overseas Bars. Following his military discharge, he returned to Manhattan and joined the family business of BJ Custom Homes. They built numerous houses and apartments in the Manhattan Area. In 1991, after his uncles passing, he took over the operation of the Kreem Kup a local restaurant. David enjoyed racing motorcycles during high school, his friends at the Mall coffee group, and attending First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his three siblings: Mike West and his wife Dee, Diane Mullinix and her husband Jim Lamoureux and Greg West and his wife Renee all of Manhattan; seven nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 1st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Private family graveside services with military honors will be at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley. Ruth Sophia Marie Baresel Gfeller, 102, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Chapman Valley Manor. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2021 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy McCall and Pastor Erik Graefe co-officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. John's Cemetery at the corner of Dietrich and St. John's Road. Mrs. Gfeller will lie in state 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2021 at the Johnson Funeral Home. Masks are required to be worn at the funeral. Ruth was born June 30, 1919, the daughter of Edward and Victoria (Kramer) Baresel. As a youngster, she attended Wetzel and Berry one room schools. Ruth graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1937. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Clarks Creek. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City. In 1938, Ruth began working for Christenson and Beeler Grain Elevator in Junction City. When the business was purchased by Morrison Grain Company, Ruth became the manager, a position she held for fifty years. During this era, she was the only woman in Junction City managing a large business. On June 24, 1947, Ruth married William (Bill) Gfeller at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City. When they married, Bill had just returned from serving combat duty in the Army. Bill and Ruth lived in his childhood home west of Junction City where he took over the family farm. They were world travelers having visited most of the continents. After Bill's death, Ruth continued traveling with her sisters. She is survived by her sister, Irma Baresel Sjo of Manhattan and many nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband William; three sisters, Bernice Baresel Munson, Mae Baresel Ascher and Marie Baresel Jorns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nellie Smith, 100, of Junction City passed away August 18, 2021. She was born April 12, 1921 in a log cabin in Geary County, the daughter of Henry and Jeannetta (Asmussen) Kramer. On June 7, 1953 she was united in marriage to Ray Smith. He preceded her in death March 12, 2012. Nellie worked as a seamstress for numerous years in Junction City. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Junction City, Circle 3, EEU and the historical society.

 Nellie was very much a people person. She enjoyed striking up a conversation with people wherever she went. Traveling was a high point in life for Nellie. Her and Ray loved taking trips all over the United States, whether it was driving cars across the country for Jim Clark Chevrolet, taking bus trips, or hauling the camper to see the sights and meet the people. Nellie was well known in the community for her generosity, her passion for programs for kids and history, her dedication to the Geary County 4-H program and other organization.

Nellie is preceded in death by her husband, Ray, her parents, and her brother, Daniel Kramer.

 Services for Nellie will include visitation at 9:00a.m. with Funeral Services at 10:00a.m., Friday, August 27, 2021 at the First Christian Church in Junction City (1429 St. Mary’s Road). Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Geary County (off K-18). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Geary County 4-H Foundation or to the First Christian Church. Nellie Smith 

Dennis M. McGuire, 66, of Olathe, KS passed on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at the Olathe Hospice House. Visitation will be at 10:00AM on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, KS followed by a memorial Mass at 11:00AM. Interment of ashes will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Lenexa, KS. Dennis was born on April 12, 1955, in Fort Hood, Texas to Martin J. McGuire Jr. and Francis G. (Connell) McGuire. He graduated from St. Frances Xavier Catholic High School in Junction City, KS. Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Maureen B. (Pollock) McGuire, on August 21st, 1976, and raised three children, Michael, Dustin, and Megan. In 1980 Dennis began his career as a firefighter in Junction City, KS and retired in 2010 as Deputy Chief at Johnson County Fire District #1 in New Century, KS. He satisfied his adventurous spirit with travel, sightseeing, scuba diving, camping, and deer hunting. Dennis never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with just about anybody he encountered. He was called to be of service to others and found lifelong friendships in organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, the Knights of Columbus, and his church parish at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, KS. Dennis loved doting over his four grandchildren, cheering on the KSU Wildcats, and caring for his meticulously manicured lawn. His own toughest critic, Dennis loved to barbeque and held certification as a KCBBS Judge. “A little tough…a little dry.” Dennis held onto his strong will, sense of humor, fearlessness, and unwavering faith in God throughout his tireless fight against Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer. He leaves behind unbelievable stories and fond memories that will carry on his legacy for generations. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Daniel R. McGuire, and Cynthia A. (McGuire) Craddock. He is survived by his wife Maureen B. McGuire of the home and his children, Michael D. McGuire (Benjamin Mustain) of Shawnee, KS, Dustin M. McGuire of Ottawa, KS and Megan A. (McGuire) Cummings (Joel Cummings) of Olathe, KS; four grandchildren, Felix and Poppy McGuire, and Keira and Ethan Cummings; and his siblings, Teresa M. McGuire-Davis, Mary F. Smith, Kathleen J. Noa and Margaret V. McGuire, all of Junction City, KS; Patricia L. Dean of Manhattan, KS; Martin James McGuire III of Reno, NV; Sandra L. Killinger of Lock Haven, PA; John J. Dennis M. McGuire, 66, of Olathe, KS passed on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at the Olathe Hospice House. Visitation will be at 10:00AM on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, KS followed by a memorial Mass at 11:00AM. Interment of ashes will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Lenexa, KS. Dennis was born on April 12, 1955, in Fort Hood, Texas to Martin J. McGuire Jr. and Francis G. (Connell) McGuire. He graduated from St. Frances Xavier Catholic High School in Junction City, KS. Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Maureen B. (Pollock) McGuire, on August 21st, 1976, and raised three children, Michael, Dustin, and Megan. In 1980 Dennis began his career as a firefighter in Junction City, KS and retired in 2010 as Deputy Chief at Johnson County Fire District #1 in New Century, KS. He satisfied his adventurous spirit with travel, sightseeing, scuba diving, camping, and deer hunting. Dennis never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with just about anybody he encountered. He was called to be of service to others and found lifelong friendships in organizations including the Boy Scouts of America, the Knights of Columbus, and his church parish at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, KS. Dennis loved doting over his four grandchildren, cheering on the KSU Wildcats, and caring for his meticulously manicured lawn. His own toughest critic, Dennis loved to barbeque and held certification as a KCBBS Judge. “A little tough…a little dry.” Dennis held onto his strong will, sense of humor, fearlessness, and unwavering faith in God throughout his tireless fight against Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer. He leaves behind unbelievable stories and fond memories that will carry on his legacy for generations. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Daniel R. McGuire, and Cynthia A. (McGuire) Craddock. He is survived by his wife Maureen B. McGuire of the home and his children, Michael D. McGuire (Benjamin Mustain) of Shawnee, KS, Dustin M. McGuire of Ottawa, KS and Megan A. (McGuire) Cummings (Joel Cummings) of Olathe, KS; four grandchildren, Felix and Poppy McGuire, and Keira and Ethan Cummings; and his siblings, Teresa M. McGuire-Davis, Mary F. Smith, Kathleen J. Noa and Margaret V. McGuire, all of Junction City, KS; Patricia L. Dean of Manhattan, KS; Martin James McGuire III of Reno, NV; Sandra L. Killinger of Lock Haven, PA; John J. Keith Burgess, age 90, passed away at the Park Lane Nursing Home in 
Scott City, Kansas, on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. He was born on October 
5, 1930, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Wade Hampton and Letha 
Adalene Phillips Burgess. He was a lifetime resident of Scott City. He 
was a certified flight instructor and worked as a farmer and aerial 
applicator.

On December 3, 1950, Keith married Betty Jean Graham in Scott City, Kansas. She survives.

Keith was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scott City, 
served on the Coop Board, the city council, and the airport board.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, his daughter, Susan &amp; Terry 
Rose of Scott City, Kansas, one grandson, Neil &amp; Jenny Rose of Scott
 City, Kansas, two granddaughters, Darci &amp; Brent Cain of Ellis, 
Kansas, and Breva &amp; Josh Spencer of Manhattan, Kansas, three 
great-granddaughters, Jacy Rose of Scott City, Kansas, and Tara Rose of 
Scott City, Kansas, and Khloe Spencer of Manhattan, Kansas, and two 
great-grandsons, Tegan Cain of Ellis, Kansas, and Ryker Spencer, of 
Manhattan, Kansas.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Max Burgess
 &amp; John Burgess, and two sisters, Mona Jeffries and Sharon Fuller.

Funeral service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Scott 
City, Kansas at 10:30 on Saturday, August 28, 2021, with Pastors Larry 
Danforth and Dennis Carter. Services will be streamed live at

James F. Malo, 79 of Abilene passed away August 18, 2021. He was born in Concordia, Kansas July 18, 1942, the son of Albert and Eva (Gagnon) Malo. James grew up in Clyde, Kansas where he graduated from High School. On October 12, 1963 he was united in marriage to Sonja Peterson. She preceded him in death January 22, 2014. James worked for United Telephone as a lineman for a couple years after high school. He later went on to work for Russell Stover’s in Kansas City and later worked 32 years for the Department of Army in civil services.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing golf and woodworking.

James is survived by his daughter, Karla Efurd (Chris) of Abilene and son, Kevin (Marie) Malo of Abilene. Four grandchildren: JoAnna (Thomas) Baker; Matthew (Alisha) Malo; and Kristen and Carrie Efurd. Three great-grandchildren: Kalan and Lennox Baker and Isla Malo. One sister, Marjorie Asper of Livingston, Texas and sister-in-law Sharon (Wayne) Schad of Edmond, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Sonja and two sisters, Gladys Charbonneau and Ruth Malo.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Peter O’Donnell officiating. Parish Rosary will be recited 9:30 a.m. Tuesday before mass at the church. Family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. James’ final resting place will be in the Abilene City Cemetery.
