Firefighters respond to fire at Boys and Girls Club

Junction City police responded to an incident in the 800 block of South Washington Street at 7:23 pm Tuesday.

Initial reports suggested the incident was a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple individuals with various injuries. Three people were transported to the Stormont Vail Flint Hills Health Campus and treated for injuries that ranged from blunt force trauma to stab wounds. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

Through the course of the investigation, officers determined that no firearm was involved in the incident. Based on evidence and witness statements gathered at the scene, Jesse Bailey III, a 27-year-old man from Junction City, was arrested on a requested charge of Aggravated Battery in connection with the altercation.

All individuals involved in the disturbance have been identified and contacted. The identities of the other two people involved are not being released at this time. There is no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation remains active as officers continue to review evidence and follow up on leads.

RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp; The Riley County Police Department has arrested a suspect following a shooting that occurred last Saturday afternoon in the 1300 block of Marlatt Avenue.

According to a media release from the RCPD, Jacques Toliver, 38, of Manhattan, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, at approximately 5:01 p.m., after turning himself into RCPD without incident. Toliver is in custody on requested charges of&nbsp; attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm and felony criminal damage to property.

 He was issued a total bond of $1,000,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail at the time of this release.At approximately 1:53 p.m., on Oct. 11, officers responded to a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, RCPD located a 35-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of serious injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Nissan Sentra driven by Ella R.&nbsp;Thalmann, 20, Palmer was eastbound on U.S. 24 just&nbsp;west of Lasita Road.

The car came upon a a 2014 Ford Focus driven by Brian L.&nbsp;Shane, 61, Alta Vista and a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Paden G. Taylor, 21, Clay Center who were stopped to turn left onto Lasita Road. The Sentra rear-ended the Ford. The Mitsubishi was also involved in the crash, according to KHP dispatch.

After impact the Sentra bounced off the Ford and struck a westbound 2012 Dodge Ram driven by Trevor A. Clark, 33, Manhattan.

EMS transported Thalmann to&nbsp;Ascension Via Christi Hospital. EMS transported Shane and a passenger in the Ford Jacque L. Shane, 58, Alta Visa, to Stormont Vail in Topeka. EMS transported Taylor and a passenger in the Mitsubishi Martin R. Dylan, 23, Clay Center, to the Clay County Medical Center. Clark was not injured. Vehicle-deer crashes can happen any day of the year on Kansas roadways. Across the state, 39% of all single-vehicle crashes in 2024 involved a collision with a deer. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports five people were killed and 674 people were injured in collisions with deer in 2024.

These crashes greatly increase from now until the end of the year because of deer breeding season, with November typically the peak time.

This is why KDOT, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, AAA Kansas and the Kansas Turnpike Authority are joining to raise awareness and help decrease deer-vehicle crashes.

“Serious crashes are more likely to occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer, as this can lead to loss of vehicle control, departure from the roadway or collisions with oncoming traffic,” said KHP Lieutenant Chad Crittenden. “It is often safer to brake firmly and stay in your lane.”

Shawn Steward, Public Affairs Manager for AAA Kansas, said that in addition to the inconvenience of your vehicle damage, the cost of repairs may put a serious dent in your wallet, especially if you don’t have comprehensive auto insurance coverage.

“AAA insurance statistics show the average claim in Kansas for an animal strike in 2024 was $8,430 – up 103% in just five years,” Steward said. “This is largely due to advanced vehicle technology such as cameras and sensors, driving up the cost of repairs.”

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer or other animal resulting in personal injury or property damage totaling $1,000 or more is required to immediately report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.

KDWP prioritizes reducing deer-vehicle collisions in managing the Kansas deer population. However, motorists should be prepared for a higher risk of collisions in the fall, said Levi Jaster, KDWP Big Game Program Coordinator.

“Even in areas with fewer deer, seasonal habitat changes and mating can bring deer onto roads at any time of day or night,” Jaster said. “Drivers should be especially cautious at dawn and dusk and stay attentive in areas with good deer habitat. Slowing down and remaining alert are the best ways to avoid a collision.”

Roadway safety officials suggest drivers: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Be watchful at dawn and dusk - deer are more active and they seldom travel alone. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Be alert and reduce speeds near wooded areas and near water sources. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Vehicle-deer collisions can happen on any rural or urban roadway – the signs show areas where high numbers have occurred in the past. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Do not swerve, this can cause motorists to veer into oncoming traffic, run off the road, hit objects or overturn. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic – the deer’s eyes often reflect. •&nbsp;&nbsp;If possible, move the vehicle to the roadway’s shoulder after a collision and call law enforcement – KHP dispatch at *47, turnpike users at *KTA or local law enforcement at 911. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on and keep your seat belt fastened. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Contact your insurance company to report damage.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a burglary at a home in Manhattan.

Just after 1p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report of burglary in the 400 block of Walters Drive, according to the Riley County Poice Department activity report.

 A 51-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect broke into her home and stole a safe with cash. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $10,150. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

The Bilbrey Family Event Center features the 130-by-250-foot Tee Jay Quarter Horses Walker Family Arena with bleacher seating for 3,000 people as well as stock pens, a staging area, covered livestock wash racks, an office and meeting room, restrooms with showers, a first aid and security room, a lobby area with concession capabilities and a VIP lounge overlooking the arena. Teresa Douthit, the interim department head of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/">animal sciences and industry</a>, said the center will allow the university to extend learning outside of a classroom."We will use this facility to support and demonstrate concepts introduced in our courses," Douthit said. "The Bilbrey Family Event Center will facilitate live animal demonstrations and observations and allow learners to practice skills through clinics and hands-on activities that can't be accomplished in a lecture hall." K-State already has plans to hold some university classes at the center beginning in the spring 2025 semester.

Designed for outreach and engagementWith the center ready for use, it opens doors for the university to attract new events, visitors and partners from around the region and throughout the U.S. K-State plans to host approximately 40 events annually at the Bilbrey Family Event Center.These activities include popular university events — among them the K-State Rodeo, Little American Royal, Cattlemen's Day, Junior Beef Producer Days and Swine Day — in addition to new youth activities and industry events."The Bilbrey Family Event Center represents Kansas State University's commitment to serving not just our students, but communities across Kansas and the entire region," said K-State President Richard Linton. RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in the 1300 block of Marlatt Avenue in Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Just before 2p.m. polic responded to a report of shots fired in the 1300 Block of Marlatt Avenue. Upon arrival, RCPD located a 35-year-old man suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported to Stormont Vail in Topeka for serious injuries.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 International semi driven by&nbsp;Gurpreet Singh, 29, Greenwood, Indiana was eastbound on Highway 50 one half mile west of Banner Road.&nbsp; &nbsp;The semi struck a 2002 Ford pickup driven by Jeremy&nbsp;Bialek, 44, Florence, who was slowing and was attempting to make a left turn.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bialek to the hospital in Newton.&nbsp;&nbsp;Singh and a passenger in the semi were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

There will be many interactive demonstrations for all ages, including rides on Old Engine No. 1, practicing escaping out of a window, learning about the importance of working smoke alarms, and lithium-ion battery safety.

Fire trucks, firefighting tools and equipment, drones, and much more will be on display throughout the event. Kids will have the chance to participate in a firefighter physical skills course to see if they have what it takes to be a firefighter. A live, side-by-side fire demonstration that shows the effectiveness of home fire sprinklers will take place at&nbsp;1:30 p.m.

Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day — smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, and toys, just to name just a few — are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, most everything that’s rechargeable uses this type of battery.

Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire, or even explode if not used correctly or if damaged. To reduce these risks, look around your home — it’s important to know which devices are powered by them.

Fire department hosts open house event Oct. 12 to wrap up Fire Safety Week festivities

Three first responders went on the roof of the Geary County 4-H / Senior Center Friday evening to help raise funds for the annual Junction City - Geary County United Way campaign. They included Junction City Fire Chief Jason Lankas, JCPD Captain Matt Paquette and Geary County Undersheriff Justin Stopper. So far the fundraising total for the first responders is $2,047. More donations remain to be tabulated.

Donations were accepted for each of the first responders.

The Raise Roof event was followed by a balloon release and a karaoke contest.

The overall fundraising goal for the entire campaign during the next year was set at $125,000.

United Way helps support numerous charities and organizations.

United Way kicks off annual campaign in Geary County

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas man is under investigation for allegedly selling drugs in Dickinson County.

In December of 2024, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit began an investigation into the distribution of Methamphetamine in Herington, according to a media release. The approximate ten-month long investigation, resulted in an arrest and a seizure of methamphetamine.

On Thursday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the 500 Block of South A Street in Herington. A search of the residence revealed Methamphetamine, Drug Paraphernalia, Cocaine, Marijuana and other controlled substances.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office also served arrest warrants with the assistance of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Junction City Police Department and the Herington Police Department.

Charles Miller, 48, of Woodbine, Kansas was arrested and booked into the Dickinson County Jail on requested charges of Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Distribution of Controlled Substance using communication facility and No Drug Tax Stamp.

Mohomed-Hezam is being held in the Pottawatomie County jail on a $50,000 bond on requested charges of distribution of marijuana greater than 450 grams, but less than 30 kilograms; distribution of THC products greater than 100 doses, but less than 1,000 doses distribution of THC products greater than 100 grams, but less than 1 kilogram.&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2019 Ford F150 driven by Michael Smith, 25, Manhattan, struck a pedestrian identified as Madison Asbury, 19, of Manhattan, who crossing 11th&nbsp;Street at Moro Street in the crosswalk.

EMS transported Asbury to Stormont Vail in Topeka with serious injuries. Smith was arrested at approximately 12:35 p.m. in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road and charged with aggravated battery and failure to stop at an accident. He is being held on a total bond of $12,000, according to the RCPD.
