TOPEKA — Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.4% in July. This was unchanged from 2.4% in June and a decrease from 3.4% in July 2021.

“Kansas and the U.S. have maintained relatively low unemployment rates so far in 2022, with Kansas remaining at 2.4% and the U.S. reaching 3.5% in July.” said Secretary Amber Shultz.

The jobless rate rose across northeast Kansas. Riley County's unemployment rate rose from 3.0 percent in June to 3.7 percent in July. Geary, Pottawatomie, Dickinson, Clay, Morris and Shawnee counties all have unemployment rates higher than 3 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 3,500 from June. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 4,000 over the month, while government decreased by 500.

“July estimates indicate that private sector jobs increased by 4,000 over the month,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “The manufacturing industry added 1,500 jobs with significant gains in durable goods manufacturing. The second largest gains were recorded in trade, transportation, and utilities which contributed 1,000 jobs to the overall private sector growth.”

Since July 2021 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 13,500. This change is due to an increase of 16,700 private sector jobs and a decrease of 3,200 government jobs.

Jobless rates rise across northeast Kansas in July

MANHATTAN — Kansas State 
University president Richard Linton said Thursday success of a campaign 
to raise $75 million in less than one year could transform agriculture 
education at the land-grant institution by modernizing grain, food, 
animal and agronomy research and innovation.

He said the university received a $25 million grant from the Kansas 
Legislature and embarked on an effort to raise $75 million in private 
gifts to qualify for a supplemental 3:1 match from the state, or another
 $25 million. The cash would be used to overhaul the College of 
Agriculture’s presence on campus by renovating two buildings and adding 
another.

The deadline for securing and certifying the $75 million in contributions is March 2023.

“Our challenge is that we’ve got to make this happen,” said Linton, 
who officially started his job at Kansas State in February. “We’re 
working hard. It’s time for agriculture.”

Linton urged 400 participants at the Kansas Governor’s Summit on 
Agricultural Growth to support the campaign by advocating for Kansas 
State and, potentially, by making donations to the special fund. A 
comparable campaign at North Carolina State University, where he 
previously worked, gained traction by collaborating 44 commodity groups 
in that state.

He said Kansas agriculture faced significant business obstacles that 
included the dwindling underground Ogallala aquifer, volatile climate 
conditions and inflation in the cost of fertilizer, equipment, seed, 
fuel and other inputs.

Challenges at Kansas State centered on the 21% student enrollment 
decline — about 4,000 students — in the past eight years, Linton said. 
That lost revenue hurt the university’s budget, weakened opportunity to 
improve faculty and staff compensation and delayed improvements in 
campus facilities, he said.

Linton said Kansas State had placed renewed emphasis on raising more 
money for student scholarships. He said KSU would advance a proposal to 
charge out-of-state students with 3.9 or higher school grade-point 
averages the lower in-state tuition rate. That program would offer a 
discount to nonresident students with 3.25 or higher GPAs.

In addition, he said, Kansas State would more directly engage Kansas 
communities at town halls and through other means to explain the 
university’s place in their lives and explore how the university might 
be more directly beneficial to Kansans. The expected the approach would 
lead to enrollment of 500 to 1,000 more students in fall 2023, he said.

Gov. Laura Kelly, who is seeking reelection against Republican 
nominee Derek Schmidt, said agriculture contributed nearly $70 billion 
to the Kansas economy and fueled nearly 240,000 jobs in 2021. She said 
Kansas exported a record $5.35 billion of agricultural goods in the past
 year.

“The Kansas ag industry is the life blood of this 
state,” Kelly said. “Given we saw record-breaking agricultural exports 
last year, I’ve never been more confident in the agriculture community’s
 ability to lead our state toward continued success.”

K-State president plows new ground to raise $75M in donations

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; three suspects on multiple charges after a drug bust in Manhattan.

Just before 9a.m. Thursday, officers conducted a search warrant in the 1300 block of Colorado Street in Manhattan that led to three arrests and the recovery of a significant amount of meth, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Antwine Berry, 60, of Manhattan was arrested on requested charges of distribution of meth within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of meth. Berry was issued a total bond of $35,000 and is no longer in&nbsp;

 DeShawn Gosha, 25, of Manhattan was arrested on a Grandview Plaza warrant for failure to appear that held a $500 bond.

 Kristanna Hill, 23, of Louisville, Kan. was arrested for possession of meth and a Riley County District Court warrant for probation violation. Hill remains confined in the Riley County Jail on a total bond of $8,000.

MANHATTAN — Governor Laura Kelly kicked off the seventh annual Kansas Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth on Thursday, a meeting of more than 400 leaders representing a variety of agricultural interests across the state of Kansas, according to a media release from her office.

“The Kansas Ag industry is the life blood of this state, and I’m grateful for the opportunity today to celebrate their accomplishments and the critical goods and services they provide to our communities, our state, and our world,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly.&nbsp;“Given we saw record-breaking agricultural exports last year, I’ve never been more confident in the agriculture community’s ability to lead our state toward continued success.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Governor Kelly touted the importance of the industry to Kansas: In 2021, agriculture contributed nearly $70 billion to the Kansas economy and fueled nearly 240,000 jobs – 12% of Kansas’ workforce. Earlier this year, she announced that Kansas exported $5.35 billion of agricultural goods – the most in the state’s history.&nbsp;

At the conference, attendees spent their morning attending breakout sessions focused on specific agricultural sectors including traditional agricultural areas like beef, pork, corn, and wheat, as well as sectors such as specialty livestock, agricultural technology, and cotton. Since the first Ag Growth Summit in 2016, these sectors have worked to identify strategies for driving growth in their sectors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Many of the initiatives that we have seen realized in recent years were born at previous Kansas Ag Growth Summits,”&nbsp;said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam.&nbsp;“As leaders from across all sectors of agriculture engage in active discussion about how we can move this industry forward, we know that collaboration benefits the entire state of Kansas.”&nbsp;

The afternoon session will include a report on the 2022 Ag Workforce Needs Assessment Survey followed by a panel discussion about how agribusinesses can better recruit and retain employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Secretary Beam will close the conference by recognizing the 2022 Kansas Ag Heroes, with a special tribute to the many individuals and organizations who stepped up to help with the wildfires that devastated many parts of the state this year.&nbsp;

Riley Co. teen finalist in USA Teen Mullet Championship competition

Around 6:00 pm Wednesday evening, Riley County Police Department responded to an injury crash at the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Westloop Place.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a 2008 Hyundai Accent driven by 78-year old Anna McCormick of Manhattan, had been hit by a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 17-year old Carly Pearsall of Manhattan.

Officers determined McCormick failed to yield at the intersection.

Pearsall was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi for treatment of head pain.

McCormick was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way.

17-year old MHK woman injured in Wednesday evening crash

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent attack on a jail officer in Riley County.

Just after 3p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for battery on a law enforcement officer and aggravated robbery at the Riley County Jail in Manhattan, according to the police department activity report.

A 20-year-old inmate body slammed a 29-year-old corrections officer in his cell and stole the officer's radio and keys.&nbsp; Other corrections officers quickly restrained the inmate.

EMS transported the injured corrections officer to Via Christi for treatment of back pain and scrapes. He was later released. 

The inmate was transported to Osawatomie State Hospital for mental health evaluation.

Officers found a 2004 Yamaha motorcycle, driven by 23-year old Haley Dunn of Manhattan had rear-ended a 2008 Honda Odyssey, driven by 39 year old Lindsay Wells of Junction City.

Both vehicles were westbound at the time of the crash.

Dunn was life-flighted to&nbsp;University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City for treatment of her injuries, Dunn was conscious and breathing at the time of transport.

UPDATE: Manhattan woman injured in motorcycle crash Wed. afternoon

Fall semester classes begin Monday at Kansas State University. In Manhattan that's good news since it means thousands of KSU students are arriving in the community.&nbsp;

There is increased traffic and longer lines&nbsp; in stores and restaurants but the addition of thousands of students is considered by many welcome news. 

Jason Smith, Chamber of Commerce President, said Manhattan is a college town. "So we sort of feel empty when we don't have students here. So just culturally I think the town feels more vibrant and engaging when the students are here. It's who we are."

Smith noted that's important economically because students shop and their return helps the local businesses and restaurants. Many of the students work in the local establishments as well. "Certainly now when we're in the labor crunch we're in across the country, being able to have workers of all types is important and we have a lot of students that fill those spots."&nbsp;

Smith noted that just having the students back make the residents feel better and makes Manhattan who they are as a community.

Dennis Cook, Aggieville Business Association Executive Director, considers Aggieville the heart of the town and the "excitement part of coming back to K-State." We have a lot of businesses that depend on the college students to not only come down and be a part of who we are but they're also a big number of our employees so we're anxious to have school back."

For the businesses in Aggieville Cook noted that the biggest part of the year is the fall. "The fall semester, this is where businesses really make it so we're excited."

Students coming into Aggieville will find a brand new parking garage that holds more than 450 vehicles. "We're going to be encouraging people to use the new parking garage because one of the main streets, North Manhattan Ave., is under construction and it will be for probably the whole fall and part-way through the spring semester. So it's important for people to come down here and use the parking garage. It's very accessible and it's going to be free until the end of the year."

Riley County Police Patrol Captain Greg Steere noted that there is a lot of construction under way in the community and that changes on a week-to-week and month-to-month basis. Motorists should be mindful of that as they travel in and around Manhattan.&nbsp;

Steere said a lot of students are coming back for school so more people will be on the roadway. In Manhattan that's good news since it means thousands of KSU students are arriving in the community.&nbsp;There is increased traffic and longer lines&nbsp; in stores and restaurants but the addition of thousands of students is considered by many welcome news. Community and Economic ImpactJason Smith, Chamber of Commerce President, said Manhattan is a college town. "So we sort of feel empty when we don't have students here. So just culturally I think the town feels more vibrant and engaging when the students are here. It's who we are."Smith noted that's important economically because students shop and their return helps the local businesses and restaurants. Many of the students work in the local establishments as well. "Certainly now when we're in the labor crunch we're in across the country, being able to have workers of all types is important and we have a lot of students that fill those spots."&nbsp;Smith noted that just having the students back make the residents feel better and makes Manhattan who they are as a community.<figure>

KSU students roll into Manhattan

Riley County Police Department responded to a motorcycle crash on westbound Fort Riley Blvd near the 56th street exit ramp and Manhattan Regional Airport.&nbsp;

Around 2:45 pm, a westbound motorcycle rear-ended a westbound car and crashed.

The female motorcycle driver was transported to the hospital via LifeStar. The driver was conscious and breathing before being transported.

Trinity is 5'2" and weighs approximately 130 pounds. She had red and black hair when she was last seen.&nbsp;

She is believed to be in the Manhattan, Junction City or Fort Riley areas, and may be accompanied by now missing 16-year old Alejandra.

Alejandra is a female runaway from Manhattan. She is 5'7" and weighs approximately 125 pounds. Alejandra has brown eyes and frequently changes the color of her hair.

The northbound 2019 Jeep Cherokee left the roadway to the east, drove over a berm and collided with a tree before overturning in the trees on the bank of Wildcat Creek.

Manhattan Fire Department had to remove tree branches to gain access to the driver.

The Riley County Police Department has released additional information on the <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/c5b39fd0-c4d7-4a8d-9887-84150baf9724">crash that injured six</a> on Tuesday evening near the town of Riley.

Upon arrival RCPD found a white 2016 Lincoln Navigator, driven by Mohammad Nomani, 40 of Manhattan, was traveling westbound on Madison Road, was turning south(left) onto N. Billings Street when it was struck from behind by a silver 2011 Ford F-150 driven by Gabriel Anderson, 24, of Clay Center.

The impact spun the Navigator into the eastbound lane where it was rear-ended a second time by a brown 2017 Ford F150 driven by Nathan Mead.

An adult female and three children from the Lincoln Navigator were transported by Riley County EMS(RCEMS) to Ascension Via Christi for treatment of suspected minor injuries. Nomani refused treatment.

RCEMS also transported an adult female and one child from the brown Ford truck to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of suspected minor injuries. Mead refused treatment.

Anderson refused treatment of minor injuries and was issued a citation for following too close.

Madison Road was closed while crews worked the scene and the vehicles were removed from the roadway, but has since reopened.

DICKINSON COUNTY —Legacy Kansas is the official name while the subtitle for the new restaurant in Abilene is Munson's Prime Steaks Brookville Family Style Chicken. 

Deanna and Chuck Munson purchased the former Brookville Hotel that has been closed for several months and have combined it with their former Munson Prime restaurant which was destroyed by a fire.&nbsp;

Deanna Munson said the history of both entities dates back into the 1800's. "The Brookville Hotel and the family that started it goes back to 1870. If you look at the Munson history of establishing the meat which is the reason why we had the restaurant, Munson's Prime, that all started in 1869 when Carl Munson came to Junction City." Munson began to acquire cattle and in 1924 the family went to a registered cow herd. Munson's Prime was opened in 2014. "So we're talking legacy of both entities."

Deanna said right now reservations only are required to eat at Legacy Kansas. Challenges hiring enough staff to do walk in open seating is the reason why. "This facility could handle 22 people at a setting. Right now we have 12 people. We need 40 to 50 in order to truly do the whole thing.&nbsp;

At this point the restaurant is serving the fried chicken dinner with all of the sides that the Brookville Hotel served. They are also serving an option of country fried steak instead of the chicken. Eventually there will be gourmet steaks and burgers served, and at that time there will be a plated menu as well as the family style chicken dinners. Later homemade Munson ice cream will be served, and in the meantime Call Hall ice cream is being brought in from K-State.

The restaurant is open 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 11 until 2 and 4:30 - 7:30 on Sundays. You can make reservations at legacykansasabilene.com or by calling 1-785-200-3973 Thursday through Monday from 2:30 to 6:30.

Upon arrival RCPD found a white Lincoln Navigator, which had been westbound on Madison Road, was turning south(left) onto N. Billings Street when it was struck from behind by a silver Ford truck.

The impact spun the Navigator into the eastbound lane where it was rear-ended a second time by a brown Ford truck.

Six transported to hospital following 3 vehicle crash near Riley

Riley County Police Department have provided u<a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/982637e3-683a-4f16-84c4-e9c4ced2722d">pdated information on the rollover crash that injured one</a> Tuesday afternoon.

One female was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi hospital for treatment of minor injuries following a rollover crash.

Crews were called out just after 1:00pm to a rollover crash just south of Wildcat Creek near the roundabout at Scenic Drive and Anderson Avenue.

The northbound vehicle left the roadway, drove over the berm and collided with a tree before overturning in the trees on the bank of Wildcat Creek.

 </figure>Crews were called out just after 1:00pm to a rollover crash just south of Wildcat Creek near the roundabout at Scenic Drive and Anderson Avenue.The northbound vehicle left the roadway, drove over the berm and collided with a tree before overturning in the trees on the bank of Wildcat Creek. Crash south of Anderson, Scenic roundabout injures 1

The Wamego Police Department is asking for information regarding the location of 15-year old Trinity.

On August 12, 2022, Trinity ran away from a residence in Salina, Kansas.

She is 5' 2" tall and was most recently known to have red and black hair, as pictured.

It's believed she may be in the area of Fort Riley, Junction City or Manhattan.

If you have information about Trinity's location, you're asked to contact the Wamego Police Department Dispatch at 785-456-9553, and reference case 22-1735, or contact your local law enforcement agency.

MISSING: 15-year old missing from Salina, has ties to MHK area

Fourteen applications have been submitted for the Riley County Police Department Director position, since the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency, commonly known as the Law Board, opened it's search on May 23rd, 2022.&nbsp;

Three of the applicants are from Kansas with the remaining 11 coming from out-of-state. The applications are being reviewed by a screening committee.

The 11 out-of-state applicants are from the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, and Vermont.

The screening committee will make recommendations to the Law Board regarding which applicants to move forward, however, the Law Board makes the decisions on who will become finalists.

“We are systematically working our way through the process,” Law Board Chair Linda Morse said. “This is an important decision and we are committed to meeting regularly to keep progressing forward. Once recommendations are made, the Law Board will meet separately to choose finalists.”

Qualifications, experience, and dedication to embracing diversity and promoting inclusion are among the deciding factors that will determine who moves on as finalists.

After a decision is made by the law board, a public announcement will be made naming the finalists.

Public input on the finalists will be welcomed during an open forum to be held later on in the application/hiring process.

By the end of 2022, the Law Board plans to name the new Director for RCPD.

Since former Director Butler's retirement on January 31, 2022, Kurt Moldrup has served as the Interim Director, and will continue to do so until the new Director is named.

&nbsp;The City of Manhattan reported an unknown suspect smashed three large glass windows while trying to gain entry to City Pool.

RCPD: Suspect smashed windows at City Pool

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A 7-year-old Kansas boy injured in a 3-vehicle crash August 10 in Pottawatomie County has died.

&nbsp;On Saturday, 7-year-old Korbin Tinkel of Wamego died from injuries in the crash that also took the life of his father, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;Just after 5:30p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp;a 2015 Western semi driven by&nbsp; Mark E&nbsp;Stanwix, 44, Lecompton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Airport Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2008 Ford Edge driven by Megan K. Schindler, 34, St. Mary's, who was slowing and coming up behind a 2013 Ford F250 driven by Randy L. Tinkel, 37, Wamego, who was stopped waiting to make a left turn.&nbsp; The impact pushed the semi and Ford Edge into the pickup.

The Ford Edge came to rest on its side north of the roadway. The Ford F250 came to rest on the south side of the roadway on its roof. The semi&nbsp; came to rest on the south of the roadway in a field.

Randy Tinkel was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Stewart's Funeral Home.

EMS transported a Korbin Tinkel and a 2-year-old boy in the pickup to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; EMS transported a third passenger in the Ford F 250 Jillian C Tinkel, 36, Wamego, to Wamego Health Center.

EMS transported Schindler to Stormont Vail. Stanwix was not injured. The 2-year-old in the Ford was the only occupant properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Friends have established an<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-tinkel-family?fbclid=IwAR2wLQangBYwDQqLsHW3jm_7fyAose8Xm7hF_K3tO3d8BFHzTBaz0c8AcJA"> online fundraiser</a> to assist the family.

7-year-old Wamego boy dies from injuries in 3-vehicle crash

A crash involving a white Toyota&nbsp; SUV occurred just before 7:00pm at the intersection of Tuttle Creek Blvd and Leavenworth Street.

According to the Riley County Police Department, the driver of the Toyota SUV was behind a vehicle which had slowed for the yellow light on southbound Tuttle Creek Blvd.

The driver of the Toyota attempted to slow down, but told RCPD that the brakes didn't work, and the driver didn't want to rear end the vehicle that was slowing to a stop in front of him.

The driver of the Toyota decided to swerve and attempt to jump the curb to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him.&nbsp;

The impact of hitting the curb caused the Toyota to spin and come to a rest on the driver’s side on the curb.

The driver was not injured in the crash. The Toyota SUV was removed from the scene by a tow truck.

There will be an archery draw for 40 deer hunting permits on Aug. 27th on the front lawn of the Milford Lake Corps of Engineers Office, 5203 N. Highway, K-57 Highway on the south end of the Milford Dam.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the draw for a hunting location is set for 9:30 a.m.

Alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination.&nbsp;“Before getting behind the wheel, please take a moment to think about the decision you’re about to make,” RCPD Patrol Captain Greg Steere said. “If you drive impaired, you’re not only more likely to crash, but that crash is much more likely to cause serious injury or death.”Throughout the year, RCPD continues to emphasize the importance of enforcing impaired driving and other traffic laws in order to save lives.
