Starting August 20th through Labor Day, September 7th, the Riley County Police Department (RCPD), along with law enforcement agencies across Kansas will be focusing on removing impaired drivers from the road.

'You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.' is an annual campaign to enforcement traffic laws against impaired driving.

In the United States, 1 person is killed in a drunk driving crash every 52 minutes. Alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning, and muscle coordination.&nbsp;

“Before getting behind the wheel, please take a moment to think about the decision you’re about to make,” RCPD Patrol Captain Greg Steere said. “If you drive impaired, you’re not only more likely to crash, but that crash is much more likely to cause serious injury or death.”

Throughout the year, RCPD continues to emphasize the importance of enforcing impaired driving and other traffic laws in order to save lives.

Just after 9a.m. Friday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1000 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 24-year-old man&nbsp; reported 31- and 36-year-old male suspects stole his Calloway golf bag with Mizuno, Titleist, and Taylor Made golf clubs inside from the bed of his truck. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,500.

MANHATTAN - On Friday morning, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting at <a href="https://findyouryogawellness.com/">'Find Your Yoga' A Wellness Studio</a>, which is located on Vanesta Place in Manhattan.

'Find Your Yoga' was founded by Lindsey Volz, and is designed to empower individuals to become healthier versions of themselves.

Volz says opening the wellness studio has long been a dream.

"It's been a long journey. I wasn't ready until now. I didn't know what I needed to know. And I'm very thankful for my family supporting me on this crazy journey and my community that has supported me and has found a need for connection connection in the wellness world."&nbsp;Volz says.

The goal of 'Find Your Yoga' is to support each person on their wellness journey.

"You know, wellness isn't a passive sport anymore. Like we have to be working on all fronts, paying attention to what's going on in our body, how we move our body, and just how we are physically in our bodies, talking to our nervous system, and this is the place where we kind of teach you how to do that." Volz says.

"My husband has supported me through all of this all of the schooling and all of the... every... everything. Oh, the work inside? Oh, yeah. And he built the studio. He helped me, he is the worker to all of my imagination. I'm very grateful for him." Volz says.

An open house will be held for all businesses located at 2012 Vanesta Place on Wednesday, August 17th at 5:00 pm.

"It's been a topic that we've worked on, in a sense, piecemeal," Moran said. "With the signing of the PACT Act into law this week, it really does take a major step. It's the most significant toxic exposure legislation that's passed Congress in our country's history."

the SFC Heath Robinson Honoring Our PACT Act of 2022 will: 

Expand VA health care eligibility to Post-9/11 combat veterans, which includes more than 3.5 million toxic-exposed veterans;

Create a framework for the establishment of future presumptions of service connection related to toxic exposure;

Add 23 burn pit and toxic exposure-related conditions to VA’s list of service presumptions;

Expand presumptions related to Agent Orange exposure;

The bill includes Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Guam, American Samoa, and Johnston Atoll as locations for Agent Orange exposure;

The bill will strengthen federal research on toxic exposure;

The bill will improve VA’s resources for toxic-exposed veterans and training for VA health care and benefits professionals;

It also is designed to let VA and veterans up for success by investing in:

Moran notes that just because it is now law doesn't mean everything is fixed yet.

"There's not ribbons to be cut and whistles and bells to be sounded," Moran said. "The practical reality is the department of veterans affairs struggles to implement major pieces of legislation and to do it in a way that really cares, that takes care of our veterans. From a what's next perspective for me it's to make sure that, most recently, the PACT Act is not just words on a piece of paper, but actually makes a difference in the lives of veterans."

RILEY COUNTY - At approximately 4:15 am Friday, Riley County Fire District #1 responded to the 8600 block of Green Randolph Road on the report of a crash.

When crews arrived on scene they found a white 4-door passenger car in the tree line.

The vehicle travelled off the left side of the roadway before rolling and coming to a stop.

Crews used their new HURST Jaws of Life extrication tools to expedite the process of gaining access to the patient while stabilizing and securing the vehicle.

The driver was transported by Riley County EMS to Ascension Via Christi Hospital for treatment of potential injuries.

Riley County Fire District #1 crews from Randolph and Leonardville both responded to the crash.

Single vehicle crash in North Riley County injures 1

Geary County Historical Society has received two mammoth fossils.&nbsp; Heather Hagedorn, Historical Society Executive Director, said the fossils, one a partial tusk and one a partial femur, were both found on the banks of the Smoky Hill River in 2021 by the donor.

Mammoths, a prehistoric relative of the modern-day elephant lived in Kansas approximately 10,000-12,000 years ago. They are the most recent organism in the fossil record. The Geary County Historical Society’s collection already contains another mammoth bone, as well as a jawbone with four teeth. Both items were also discovered in local rivers.

All of these prehistoric fossils can be viewed now at the Geary County Museum, open Tuesday-Saturday 1-4pm.

RILEY COUNTY - A baler caught fire on Thursday afternoon, destroying approximately 2 acres of prairie hay meadow west of Manhattan.

Shortly before 4:30 pm, Riley County Fire District #1 was dispatched to the 6600 block of Anderson Avenue on the report of an out of control fire caused by a baler malfunction.

When crews arrived on the scene, they worked quickly to contain the fire before it could threaten any structures.

Damage from the fire was contained to the meadow and baler.

Four fire trucks and nine volunteers responded to the scene from the Keats, Ogden and Riley fire stations.

The fire was extinguished by 5:10 pm, with final fire crews clearing the scene shortly after 5:30 pm. No injuries were reported with this fire.

Fire west of MHK damages baler, destroys prairie hay meadow

MANHATTAN - Riley County has announced that the Transfer Station will start a controlled burn on the pile of debris on August 17th.

The debris was collected following the severe storms and tornado in June.

The controlled burn is expected to last a week, during which, smoke will likely be noticed in the area surrounding the Transfer Station, including but not limited to inside Manhattan City limits.

MANHATTAN - Just before 2:00 pm on Wednesday afternoon, emergency crews were called to the scene of a 3-vehicle crash at the intersection of Seth Child and Southwind Roads in Manhattan.

After investigation, Riley County Police Department determined a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 23-year old Rebecca Lazarus of Manhattan was traveling northbound on South Seth Child Road.

Lazarus was attempting to turn west(left) onto Southwind and hit a 2009 Dodge Journey driven by 21-year old MacKenzie Clements, also of Manhattan, who was traveling southbound on Seth Child Road.

Upon impact, Lazarus' car was spun into a 2016 Hyundai semi truck's trailer axel, before coming to a stop in the middle of the intersection. The semi came to a stop on the northbound shoulder following the impact.

Lazarus was transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan by Riley County EMS for treatment of arm and other injuries.

 19-year old Malia Clements of Junction City, was a passenger in Mackenzie Clements' vehicle, she was also transported to Ascension Via Christi by Riley County EMS for a possible broken ankle.

MacKenzie Clements was later transported by private vehicle to Ascension Via Christi for rib pain.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Wednesday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Western semi driven by&nbsp; Mark E&nbsp;Stanwix, 44, Lecompton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 just west of Airport Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2008 Ford Edge driven by Megan K. Schindler, 34, St. Mary's, who was slowing and coming up behind a 2013 Ford F250 driven by Randy L. Tinkel, 37, Wamego, who was stopped waiting to make a left turn.&nbsp; The impact pushed the semi and Ford Edge into the pickup.

The Ford Edge came to rest on its side north of the roadway. The Ford F250 came to rest on the south side of the roadway on its roof. The semi&nbsp; came to rest on the south of the roadway in a field.

Randy Tinkel was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Stewart's Funeral Home.

EMS transported a 2-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy in the pickup to Children's Mercy.&nbsp; EMS transported a third passenger in the Ford F 250 Jillian C Tinkel, 36, Wamego, to Wamego Health Center.

EMS transported Schindler to Stormont Vail. Stanwix was not injured. The adults in the Ford F250 were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Wamego man dead, 2 adults and 2 children injured in 3-vehicle crash

MANHATTAN - Three people were transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan for injuries they received in a crash at the intersection of S. Seth Child Road and Southwind Road in Manhattan.

A 21-year old female, driving a 2009 Dodge Journey and a 23-year old, driving a 2013 Chevy Malibu, were both transported to the hospital by Riley County EMS for treatment of injuries received in the crash.

A passenger from one of the vehicles was also taken to the hospital for their injuries, details are still pending.

According to RCPD, all 3 individuals are in stable condition.

The call came in just before 2:00pm, and when Riley County Police Department arrived on scene, they found 3 vehicles involved in the crash, including a semi, and two passenger vehicles.

According to RCPD, one of the passenger vehicles went under the semi during the crash.&nbsp;

Just after 9:30a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft and unlawful computer acts in the 300 block of N. Billings Street in Riley, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 23-year-old man reported he paid a scammer pretending to be Evergy for fake overdue bills.

23-year-old Riley Co. man lost $600 in utility company scam

Konza Prairie Community Health Center has announced that they are celebrating National Health Center Week with a food drive to stock the Konza Cupboard, a free pantry located outside the clinic at 361 Grant Ave in Junction City. The food drive will also benefit patients of the Konza clinic in Manhattan. Konza staff are contributing to this effort with an internal competition to see which department can donate the most items. The previous food drive, in August 2021, brought in enough supplies to fill the Konza Cupboard for three months.

The public is invited to donate food and personal hygiene items to help stock the Konza Cupboard. A donation box is available inside the main entrance at the Konza Junction City clinic.

The Konza Cupboard was established in March 2021 to help fight hunger in the community. It is part of the Konza Cares initiative – a suite of programs developed by the clinic to help patients access food, clothing, medication, transportation, and more.

GEARY COUNTY—A Manhattan man was injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Tuesday in Geary County.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a 2004 Chevy Cavalier driven by Zane Rains of Manhattan was southbound near the intersection of U.S. 77 Highway and Skiddy West Road.&nbsp;

The Chevy struck a 2022 Ram 1500 Classic driven by Gail Hoke of Manhattan who was attempting a U-turn in the roadway.&nbsp; EMS transported Rains to Geary Community Hospital for treatment.&nbsp; The Sheriff's Office reported no additional details.

Manhattan man hospitalized after crash during u-turn

RILEY COUNTY - The Riley County Appraiser's Office will have staff out and about throughout Riley County during the month of August to update both residential and commercial real estate records.

Kansas law mandates that property records are updated as part of the continual reappraisal maintenance process.

Appraisers will take photos and perform onsite inspections of some properties during the process, however, not all properties are scheduled for this part of the process.

Any Riley County employee will be easily identifiable, they will travel in vehicles with the Riley County logo, wear shirts with a visible Riley County logo and happily show their Riley County issued identification badge.

The Riley County Appraiser's office says if you have any questions or concerns to contact the Appraiser's office at 785-537-6310.

Homesites that need to be reviewed will receive a questionnaire in the mail. Those who receive the questionnaire are asked to complete and return the green card by October 1st, 2022.

SCAM Alert: Manhattan Fire Department warns, text for discount on MFD shirt is a scam

MANHATTAN - Around 6:15 am on Sunday, August 7th, Riley County Police Department, with assistance from Riley County EMS and the Manhattan Fire Department; responded to the 3500 block of Hudson Circle on the report of a e-scooter crash.

Teenager injured in e-scooter crash, Sunday morning, in MHK

MANHATTAN - Shortly after 8:00 am, Monday, August 8th, crews from Manhattan Fire Department were called to the 1600 block of Little Kitten Avenue in northwest Manhattan on the report of a gas leak.

Twenty residents in the 1600 block were evacuated from their homes as a precaution until the leak was resolved.

Kansas Gas Service also responded to the scene, clamping off the leaking pipe to contain the leak, before repairs were made.

Crews from Quint 3 and Quint 5 were on standby at the scene and assisted with the evacuation and return of residents to the area.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes before 9:00 am.

MANHATTAN - The City of Manhattan say southbound Sunset Avenue will be closed Tuesday, August 8th and Wednesday, August 9th while AT&amp;T installs fiber in the area.

Southbound traffic will be detoured east on Anderson Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Northbound traffic is not expected to be affected by this project.

Detour routes will be marked and city officials ask for drivers to be aware of workers in the roadway during the completion of this project.

Southbound Sunset Ave to be closed Tuesday, Wednesday

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher I am writing this on the day of the primary elections, complete with my “I Voted” sticker on the left pocket of my shirt. I am proud to say that I exercised my right to vote, and, in my mind, I made all the right choices. To my knowledge I have participated in every election since I turned 18, and I intend to exercise it every opportunity I get for the rest of my life. I don’t know if you have noticed but we are at a serious crossroads in the history of our great nation. That crossroads makes exercising the right to vote even more critical now than ever. That is especially true for those of us in agriculture. We are an ever-shrinking number, and we must take every chance we can get to make our voices heard and that is especially true when it comes to the polls. That is also why it is so critical for each of us as Farm Bureau members to get involved with Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends, or VOTE FBF. First, let me encourage you to support it monetarily. The dollars are used to support candidates friendly to agriculture are only generated through donations from members. It doesn’t have to be much if each of us donate every year. More importantly get involved in the county process to decide which candidates to support. Like everything else in Farm Bureau, the decision of which candidates to support starts at the county level. Increasingly we are seeing candidates recognize this and start to attend county board meetings and this gives us an opportunity to have discussions with them about our views. Those recommendations along with voting records are heavily considered by the Vote FBF board when deciding which candidates to endorse. I would also hope that when you do go to the polls you will look at the list of candidates endorsed by VOTE FBF and consider supporting them. They are the candidates who have the best interest of agriculture in mind and most closely align with our policy. In the end you will make up your own mind and vote for the candidates that best represent you, but the list of endorsed candidates is a good place to start. The most important thing is to get out and vote in November. It is the best way for us to make our voices heard. It was ingrained in me early on that if you did not participate and vote, you really had no right to complain. I know I still get a feeling of pride every time I go to the polls and cast my vote. Regardless of how I feel about the slate of candidates or the issues I am voting on, I do get a great deal of satisfaction participating in the process. It isn’t perfect, but it is the best in the world. So go cast your vote and wear that sticker with pride, you earned it.

MANHATTAN - The&nbsp;Sunset Zoo hosted the community for Water Safari and Water Matters Day on Saturday.

Kids received free admission with a paid adult admission all day Saturday.

Water activities include splash zones, activity booths by the Konza Rotary Club and the Manhattan Fire Department provided a Spray N' Play area.

There was also a scavenger hunt and chalk &amp; bubble stations around the zoo.

After completing the scavenger hunt, kids picked a prize for completing the search.
