Sen. Jerry Moran said this past week that&nbsp; the importance of Fort Riley to the nation's defense was conveyed during a visit to the Post by the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, Gen. James McConville. "Certainly our work in Europe as it relates to Ukraine and Russia, and to demonstrate that if there are to be any increase in forces to be deployed any place in the United States that Fort Riley is an installation that will be considered for that. "

Moran noted that McConville understands the desire of local and Kansas officials for more troops, such as another brigade to be stationed at Fort Riley. That is not in the plan right now. "The issue that the Army faces today before we can look at the deployment of additional soldiers to Kansas, to Fort Riley, is the Army has to recruit and retain members of the military."&nbsp;

Recruitment is down so the Senator noted that much of the conversation involved how to improve the Army's opportunity to attract and retain members. "For us to have success in additional deployments to Fort Riley the Army has to do it's job of recruiting soldiers."

Measures that have been undertaken by Fort Riley include members of the Army across Kansas and this region showing the benefit of Fort Riley, what goes on at the Post and connecting with citizens. "Big Army including its recruitment battalions are working harder in schools connecting with teachers, guidance counselors and school superintendents with the effort of making sure we get members of the Army into their hometown schools." The 14th annual Speedy PD Race for Parkinson's Disease was held at the Tuttle Creek River Pond area on Saturday.

Hundreds of runners gathered to run, jog or walk their way through their choice of a 10K, 5K or 1/2 mile course.

Money raised from donations and entry fees totaled more than $83,000 and will fund the Meadowlark Parkinson's Program which supports individuals in the Flint Hills and Northeast Kansas who have Parkinson's Disease.

Manhattan Arts Center hosted an artists reception for it's newest art show, <a href="https://www.kellyyarbrough.com/foraging/">Foraging</a>, on Friday afternoon.

<a href="https://www.manhattanarts.org/564/Foraging-and-Baack">Foraging</a> is a group exhibit featuring eight female artists, seven from outside of Kansas, and the eighth, curator and artist, Kelly Yarbrough.

Yarbrough says she had previous connections with 3 of the artists; the remaining four artists she had admired their work online.

“I put out the name of the show&nbsp;and the theme before I knew what the works were going to be, but the name ‘Foraging’ kind of felt right for the group of artists that I was, that I was thinking about and talking to.” curator and artist, Kelly Yarbrough says.&nbsp;

“As a curator, it’s just exciting to me to be able to reach out and bring work together, of people who are doing some really awesome things.” Yarbrough says.&nbsp;

🎥: 'Foraging' opens at Manhattan Arts Center

WABAUNSEE COUNTY - The Kansas Department of Transportation(KDOT) has announced a resurfacing project in Wabaunsee County has been scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 30th.

The project begins on K-99 just south of Wamego at the Wabaunsee/Pottawatomie county line and goes to the K-99/K-4 junction.

The resurfacing project does not include the portion of K-9 within Alma city limits or the ongoing K-99 realignment project.

According to KDOT, Shilling Construction Company will be completing the project and will start the Wabaunsee/Pottawatomie county line and complete work to the I-70 underpass.&nbsp;

Work will then move to the K-99/K-4 junction and move north until crews reach the I-70 underpass.

Drivers should allow for delays of up to 15 minutes through the area while work is completed, as traffic will be reduced to a single lane and directed by a pilot car, flaggers, signs and cones.

The project is estimated to be complete by early November, and costs $3.4 million dollars.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a woman for crimes involving small children.

Just after 2 p.m. Thursday, police arrested 26-year-old Maria Bryan of Manhattan on a Riley County District Court Warrant for aggravated battery and three counts of endangering a child, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The arrest is in connection with a March 22, incident where where Bryan allegedly caused bodily harm to and placed a two-year-old girl in a situation where the child's wellbeing was endangered and a June 5,&nbsp; incident where she placed the same victim and a now seven-year-old boy in an additional situation where the child's wellbeing was endangered. 

Bryan remains jailed on a bond of $13,000, according to the RCPD.

JUNCTION CITY —Geary County Commissioners outlined the plan Thursday night to save Geary Community Hospital through an agreement with Stormont Vail Health. That company will oversee the operations at the hospital completely in January, and they are already providing assistance.

Some of the key points during a public presentation at the C.L. Hoover Opera House included the fact that GCH has been operating at a one million dollar per month deficit.&nbsp; That is expected to change in the future.

Stormont Vail will install the record management billing system called Epic, which should lead to monetary savings, will schedule more surgeries including nine yesterday ( Thursday ) alone, and will employ some of their own doctors in the emergency room. Stormont will be investing $20 million of their own money into the GCH facility for infrastructure improvements over the next five years. Geary County will issue revenue bonds totaling approximately $32 million to cover existing debt, short term operational funds and infrastructure improvements needed this year and money for $20 million in future infrastructure improvements. County debt would be retired in 2048.&nbsp;

All current GCH employees are being given the opportunity to interview for jobs if they would like to remain at the hospital, and there is no reason to expect they would not be retained.

Annual property taxes to support the hospital will not increase.

Commissioner Keith Ascher told the audience at the Opera House this has been a long struggle but officials wanted to be sure that they had all the i's dotted and t's crossed before they could share information with the public.&nbsp;

During&nbsp; the process to make a future decision on the hospital, Commissioner Trish Giordano commented that they had three options. They included operating at a $1 million per month deficit, closing the hospital but with debt the building couldn't be reopened until grandfathered code violations were addressed, or they could partner with someone. The latter option was chosen.

The end goal was to ensure Junction City still has a hospital.

Commissioners outline plan to save Geary Community Hospital

The Riley County Police Department has posted a warning on their social media accounts, letting the community know of an increase in overdoses presumably due to fake pills.

RCPD says they've responded to four overdoses in the last week, with two of them involving juveniles, one of them occurring at Manhattan High School, during school hours.

RCPD said the overdoses are presumed to be caused by the individuals taking fake, pressed prescription pills containing Fentanyl.

Fentanyl has reached the top of the list for cause of death in Americans between the ages of 18 and 45, in just one year.

RCPD recommends that parents have a conversation with their children about how dangerous the fake pills can be.

RCPD says if someone overdoses, that person is not a suspect in the investigation, their goal is to identify, apprehend and prosecute the individual(s) who are distributing the fake pills.

Campus Pride has recognized K-State as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly colleges in the nation, one of only 40 universities from the U.S. to make it on the list, and the only university from Kansas to be listed.

The&nbsp;creation of a safe, welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff is one of the qualities used to determine rankings on the list.

The Best of the Best list includes universities known for having LBGTQ-inclusive policies, programs and practices.

"This national recognition confirms the university is truly dedicated to providing an inclusive, diverse and affirming campus," said Thomas Lane, vice president for student life and dean of students. "It also highlights the work by our K-State family — faculty, staff, students and alumni — to ensure K-State is always a place where people may be their authentic selves."&nbsp;

In 2010, K-State established&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.k-state.edu/lgbt">LGBT Resource Center</a>, intended to create an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals and bring resources to support the community at large.

Riley County has an additional 87 new COVID-19 cases recorded between August 13th through the 19th, by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).

Riley County is now in the HIGH COVID-19 incidence category, with more than 100 cases per 100,000 people, at 117.2. This total does not include those who use at-home tests.

Two COVID-19 positive patients are hospitalized, due to their symptoms, at Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan. One of the patients is on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The 93rd death related to COVID-19 was reported as a 56-year old female. She tested positive on August 13th and died on August 18th. She received one dose of the Moderna vaccine in February of 2022.

Current guidelines for quarantine and isolation related to COVID-19 provided by the CDC can <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/isolation.html">be found here</a>.

VACCINE INFORMATION Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax vaccines are now available at the Riley County Health Department Clinic located at 2030 Tecumseh Road.

Riley Co. returns to 'High' incidence rate of COVID-19 cases

Your child has gone missing or run away, what should you do?

Riley County Police Department says your first step should be to call them, either using 911 or 785-537-2112.&nbsp;

“In the event that they do run away, don’t hesitate to call us and call us immediately, I mean that’s a number one, especially the younger they are, you know, time is of the essence, so if you don’t know where your child is, call us immediately, and if it’s an emergency, especially if they’re younger, don’t hesitate to call us on 911.” Riley County Police Department, Communications Manager, Tyler Siefkes says.&nbsp;

“I feel like sometimes parents don’t immediately notify us because there might be a shame associated with them not being able to control their children, and that’s just part of life, that’s part of parenting, is that your kids don’t always listen to you.” Riley County Police Department, Dispatch Supervisor, Sarah Martin says.&nbsp;

When a child goes missing, parents and guardians need to be prepared for questions from Law Enforcement, those questions are being asked to help determine the best steps to take to bring the child home quickly.&nbsp;

“If you guys had an argument because they wanted to go to the mall or to a concert, that could be a good lead for us to start, is ‘ok you said no to: going swimming.’ We’re going to go check the pools, because they might just be defying you a little bit and it’s not their intention to run away, they’re just being kids. So, like, telling us as much as you can to give us those good ideas of maybe where to start the search is really helpful.” Martin says.&nbsp;

Community members often ask why an Amber Alert is not used utilized more often in the cases of missing kids, and RCPD says there are very specific requirements to be met before an Amber Alert can be issued. The first requirement is that the child has been abducted, which recent missing children's cases in Riley County have not met. <a href="https://kbi.kansas.gov/ksamber/procedures">Details on other requirements can be found here.&nbsp;</a>

RCPD also recommends keeping an updated picture of your child handy. The picture can then be sent out to officers and used for social media posts to alert the community to be on the lookout for your child.&nbsp;

“You don’t probably ever know when this will happen but it is just important to pay attention, pay attention to what your child is wearing that day, because clothes will be one of the questions that a dispatcher asks, in the event that they do run away.”&nbsp;

The Riley County Police Department also has a program which provides details to police officers who may come in contact with someone who has difficulty communicating with others, called <a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/guardians">Project: Guardians</a>.&nbsp;

“The main goal of Project: Guardians is to give officers on patrol immediate access to information about children that may frequently go away from the home, as far as, sometimes with children with autism and other cognitive disorders, and it’s not just limited to children either, it’s adults that may have Alzheimer’s or dementia. If there’s any concern about somebody in your family that may go missing or go away from the residence at any point, or that may just come upon a police officer in any sort of situation and may have difficulty communicating with that police officer, they should be enrolled in Project: Guardians. It gives us information about how to communicate with that person, and gives officers a picture of that person right away and it’s a great program, so we’re trying to spread the word about that as much as possible,” Siefkes says.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN —As millions of K-12 students head back to the classroom, a new report by Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/">College of Education</a>&nbsp;researchers shows the scope of the teaching vacancy problem across the country, providing what may be the first data set on teacher shortages by state. <a href="https://www.edworkingpapers.com/ai22-631">"Is There a National Teacher Shortage? A Systematic Examination of Reports of Teacher Shortages in the United States"</a>&nbsp;was published as a working paper by the Brown University's Annenberg Institute by K-State researchers Tuan Nguyen, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, and Chanh Bao Lam, data analyst. Paul Bruno, assistant professor at the University of Illinois-Champaign, is the third author. Augmenting existing data from federal and state agencies with news reports and publicly available information, the team examined each state's teacher vacancies then grouped them into three categories for comparison. The team's report also includes a look at the number of underqualified individuals serving as teachers to fill vacancies. According to Nguyen classifying the teacher shortage is difficult because reporting varies from state to state or agency to agency. "Overall, there are at least 36,500 vacant positions along with 163,000 underqualified individuals filling teaching positions across the United States," Nguyen said. "These vacancies represent 1.67% of teaching positions nationwide, with about 5.16% of positions held by underqualified school district employees." The 11 states in Group 1 have the clearest vacancies. Florida leads the nation with nearly 4,000 unfilled teaching positions for the 2021-22 school year, followed by Illinois with 1,703 and Arizona with 1,699. The remaining states in this group are Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. The 26 states plus Washington, D.C., in the second group have less clear vacancy information. In this category, Georgia ranks highest with 3,112 position vacancies for the 2019-20 school year — the last year data was available —followed by Mississippi and Alabama, each with more than 3,000 vacancies in 2021-22. Wisconsin is the only state with vacancies in the 2000s. The following states reported vacancies more than 1,000 vacancies: North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kansas, New Mexico, West Virginia and Maryland. The remaining states in this group reported vacancies of under 1,000 from Indiana with 980 to Rhode Island with 93. The 13 remaining states have no vacancy information, but they have a substantial number of underqualified teachers, including up to 24,000 positions in California. The states in this category are listed in alphabetical order: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming. "We need more accurate and timely data to make targeted policy decisions addressing these substantial teacher staffing challenges," Nguyen said. "Toward this end, our report contains several recommendations for district and state policymakers to consider when addressing local teacher shortages." A Systematic Examination of Reports of Teacher Shortages in the United States"</a>&nbsp;was published as a working paper by the Brown University's Annenberg Institute by K-State researchers Tuan Nguyen, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, and Chanh Bao Lam, data analyst. Paul Bruno, assistant professor at the University of Illinois-Champaign, is the third author. Augmenting existing data from federal and state agencies with news reports and publicly available information, the team examined each state's teacher vacancies then grouped them into three categories for comparison. The team's report also includes a look at the number of underqualified individuals serving as teachers to fill vacancies. According to Nguyen classifying the teacher shortage is difficult because reporting varies from state to state or agency to agency. "Overall, there are at least 36,500 vacant positions along with 163,000 underqualified individuals filling teaching positions across the United States," Nguyen said. "These vacancies represent 1.67% of teaching positions nationwide, with about 5.16% of positions held by underqualified school district employees." The 11 states in Group 1 have the clearest vacancies. Florida leads the nation with nearly 4,000 unfilled teaching positions for the 2021-22 school year, followed by Illinois with 1,703 and Arizona with 1,699. The remaining states in this group are Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. The 26 states plus Washington, D.C., in the second group have less clear vacancy information. In this category, Georgia ranks highest with 3,112 position vacancies for the 2019-20 school year — the last year data was available —followed by Mississippi and Alabama, each with more than 3,000 vacancies in 2021-22. Wisconsin is the only state with vacancies in the 2000s. The following states reported vacancies more than 1,000 vacancies: North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kansas, New Mexico, West Virginia and Maryland. The remaining states in this group reported vacancies of under 1,000 from Indiana with 980 to Rhode Island with 93. The 13 remaining states have no vacancy information, but they have a substantial number of underqualified teachers, including up to 24,000 positions in California. The states in this category are listed in alphabetical order: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming. "We need more accurate and timely data to make targeted policy decisions addressing these substantial teacher staffing challenges," Nguyen said. "Toward this end, our report contains several recommendations for district and state policymakers to consider when addressing local teacher shortages." Fort Riley has announced that will be a full-scale, emergency-preparedness exercise Thursday in the Camp Funston area.

During the day, residents, employees and community members should be aware that there may be an increase in emergency response vehicles and “Giant Voice” loudspeaker announcements.

Additionally, certain roads on the installation may be closed and traffic could be rerouted due to exercise activity. Drivers are asked to be patient and allow extra time when traveling on post.

The exercise is a way to test and train installation emergency preparedness. The annual exercise involves Fort Riley personnel and community partners and helps test, sync and evaluate emergency response processes and procedures.

A 2020 Ford Explorer driven by Curtis Johnson, 62, Junction City, was eastbound behind the semi and possibly ran over the tire debris.

The SUV then left the roadway and traveled through the center median. Both vehicles came to a stop in the center median.

EMS transported Johnson and a passenger 59-year-old Margaret Johnson of Junction City to St. Francis Hospital. Bolds was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Vehicle damaged by 4 gunshots in MHK

Starting Tuesday, August 23rd, City of Manhattan Street Division will begin repair work on Claflin Road between Beechwood Terrace and Browning Avenue.

Crews will be repairing the asphalt in multiple areas along the quarter-mile stretch up and down the hill.

Claflin Rd. repairs will cause temporary access issues for businesses on 'The Hill' 

Both eastbound lanes of Bluemont Avenue will be closed at the intersection with North Manhattan Avenue, starting at 2:30 am on Tuesday, August 23rd.

Both lanes will be closed until approximately 6:30 am to allow crews to pour concrete at the south side of the intersection.

During the closure, eastbound traffic from Anderson Avenue will be detoured south on 14th Street to Poyntz Avenue, while westbound traffic will be unaffected.

Southbound traffic on North Manhattan Avenue will be detoured onto Vattier Street.

When the crews complete the concrete pouring, eastbound travel will be reopened in the northern, left eastbound lane.

The concrete will take until Friday, August 27th to cure, then crews will add a new 2-inch asphalt overlay on top of the concrete base.&nbsp;

Bluemont Avenue is expected to reopen all eastbound lanes by the weekend.

The Aggieville Garage remains open and accessible from 14th Street. 

The public parking lot north of Laramie Street will remain open and accessible from 12th Street. The North Manhattan Avenue closure&nbsp;continues between Laramie and Moro Streets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trinity is 5'2" and weighs approximately 130 pounds. She had red and black hair when she was last seen.&nbsp;

UPDATE: 1 runaway teen located, 2nd teen still missing

Manhattan Fire Department was called out to the 1200 block of Poyntz Avenue on the report of a structure fire at 11:41 am on Saturday.

When crews arrived on the scene smoke was coming from the single story residence.

Five fire trucks with 15 fire fighters, along with the Battalion Chief responded to the fire.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arriving on scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.&nbsp;Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $21,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Vincent E. Rucker and Lawrence J. Jr. Budenosky of Manhattan, Ks.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Riley County EMS responded to the scene as mutual aid and the Riley County Police Department provided traffic control through the area.

Country music fans will head to Alma on Saturday evening to enjoy a concert with headliner, nationally known, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CraigCampbelltv">Craig Campbell</a>, and secondary opener, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/travismarvin">Travis Marvin</a>&nbsp;of Ottawa, KS.&nbsp;

Opening for Marvin and Campbell is Indiana country music artist, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JohnRyanMusic36">John Ryan</a>, who credits his interest in music to his mom.&nbsp;

"We talked about it a little bit, in there, and I honestly think my mom. So my mom always sang and my mom's a pretty good singer. She won't...she won't say it and she acts like she's not but she a...she's a good singer. We just to go to Karaoke bars, like in Florida, the kids could go in, we'd go down on vacation and she'd always sing 'Harper Valley PTA,' that was like her song. She'd always kill it, and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. So I don't know, I never dreams of being a live musician. I just kind of did it as a hobby, and then I started playing shows and people are like 'Man, you sound pretty good.' and I'm like 'Well, thank you.' and I enjoyed writing the music and it's been kind of a snowball effect after that of just enjoying it. I love meeting new people and partying with new people. It's the best." John Ryan says.
