Despite the loss, K-State had one of its better shooting performances, connecting on 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the field, including 45 percent (9-of-20) from 3-point range, as 3 Wildcats (Mike McGuirl, Nijel Pack and Kaosi Ezeagu) all scored in double figures. McGuirl and Pack led the way for the second straight game with 16 points each, while Ezeagu added 10 points to reach double figures for the first time in Big 12 play. Gonzaga and Baylor held down the top two spots, just as they have all season, with the Bulldogs getting 55 of 63 first-place votes and the Bears getting the other eight. Michigan took advantage of Villanova’s loss at St. John’s to jump into the top three, rival Ohio State climbed three spots to No. 4 and the Wildcats rounded out the top 5.

Tampa Bay used a stout defense and the pass-catch combination of quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in the Super Bowl Sunday night in Tampa, Florida.

The Buccaneers defense kept the chiefs out of the end zone, holding Kansas City to three field goals.

Chiefs bid for repeat title falls short in the Super Bowl

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — NaLyssa Smith scored 17 points and No. 8 Baylor beat Kansas State 64-52. Dijonai Carrington and Moon Ursin each had 16 points. Ursin had six of those in the final two minutes as the Lady Bears beat the Wildcats for the 35th straight time. Kansas State (5-11, 0-9 Big 12) was led by Ayoka Lee who scored 21 and Rachel Ranke who had 12. The Lady Bears (14-2, 9-1) went on a 12-0 run early in the second quarter, including two 3’s by Carrington, and never lost the lead again.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, was involved in a multi-vehicle crash late Thursday that injured two young children near the team’s training complex adjacent to Arrowhead Stadium. 

The team confirmed in a statement Friday that Britt Reid was involved in the accident but declined additional comment. Local television station KSHB reported that Reid told an officer on the scene that he had “two or three drinks,” according to a search warrant filed just before midnight. Reid then complained of stomach pain and also was taken to an area hospital.

Officially signing on Wednesday were Manhattan defensive tackle&nbsp;Damian Ilalio&nbsp;and Topeka defensive back&nbsp;Desmond Purnell.

Coupled with the early signing period, K-State’s 2021 Signing Class features 16 high school student-athletes.

This year’s class includes 10 players on defense and six on offense. The class is comprised of four defensive backs, three linebackers, two apiece of defensive tackles, offensive linemen and wide receivers, a defensive end, one running back and a quarterback. The state of Kansas led the way with six signees, while there were two from Colorado and two from Georgia.

Of the 16 total signees, five are currently on campus and will take part in spring practices, which begin on Wednesday, March 3.

The players from this year’s class that are currently enrolled include: wide receiver&nbsp;Brenen Hawkins, linebacker&nbsp;DaVonte Pritchard, quarterback&nbsp;Jake Rubley, offensive lineman&nbsp;Austin Weiner&nbsp;and defensive tackle&nbsp;Brayden Wood. The Wildcats also inked five transfers prior to the start of the spring semester: tight end&nbsp;Daniel Imatorbhebhe, defensive backs&nbsp;Julius Brents&nbsp;and&nbsp;Craig Yeast, defensive tackle&nbsp;Timmy Horne&nbsp;and linebacker&nbsp;Eric Munoz.

“This game will have a similar feel to a bowl game, and I know our fans have always enjoyed traveling to Arlington,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “Fans will be able to purchase tickets at various price levels from either our ticket office or directly from AT&amp;T Stadium. Either way, we want as many of our fans as possible, including the 7,000-plus alums in the area, to support our student-athletes in person. It has been a very difficult year, and we are all looking forward to the return of some normalcy with our events.”

Parking passes will be sold exclusively through AT&amp;T Stadium. Pricing and availability information will come at a later date. All tickets and parking passes for this event will be distributed as mobile tickets. Gameday guidelines will be communicated to purchasers as they are set by AT&amp;T stadium staff with guidance from local health officials.

The game will be the 12th contest to kick-off the college football season, the first as the Allstate Kickoff Classic and will mark the Wildcats’ second appearance at the venue.&nbsp;Past kickoff games in AT&amp;T Stadium have included some of the nation’s best programs such as Alabama, Michigan, Auburn, Wisconsin, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon and Florida, among others.&nbsp;

The Wildcats will be making their fourth appearance in the DFW area in non-conference games following Cotton Bowl appearances in 1997, 2001 and 2012.

Management proposed to the players’ association on Friday that the start of spring training be pushed back from Feb. 17 to March 22, that opening day be delayed from April 1 to April 28 and that each team’s schedule be cut from 162 games to 154. 

The delay was proposed as a way to give the virus situation more time to improve. As part of the offer, MLB included the expansion of the playoffs from 10 teams to 14 and extending the designated hitter to the National League for the second straight season, a plan the union rejected Jan. 6.

Players reject MLB proposal

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Third-year head coach Pete Hughes announced K-State’s 2021 baseball schedule, which begins Friday, February 19 and features 31 home games at the recently renovated Tointon Family Stadium.

The Wildcats officially begin the 2021 campaign at the Sanderson Ford College Classic in Surprise, Arizona. K-State will face off with Oregon State, Gonzaga and New Mexico over four days at Surprise Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers.

K-State’s home opener is set for Friday, February 26 against Western Michigan. The three-game series kicks off an eight-game home stand, as the Cats will also play Eastern Illinois (March 5-7) and South Dakota State (March 9-10).

Following a home weekend series against New Mexico from March 19-21, K-State travels to in-state rival Wichita State (March 23) before beginning Big 12 play at Oklahoma State on Friday, March 26.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders, a 2019 College World Series qualifier, visit Tointon Family Stadium for a three-game set beginning Thursday, April 1. The Wildcats’ home conference slate also features Oklahoma (April 16-18), West Virginia (April 23-25) and TCU (May 20-22).

The Cats will host non-conference opponents in Arkansas-Pine Bluff (April 6-7), Northern Colorado (April 13-14), Missouri (April 27) and Texas Southern (April 30-May 2).

In total, the Wildcats’ 52-game slate features 16 games against 2019 postseason teams, including Baylor, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

All 31 home games are scheduled to be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, while every K-State baseball game can be heard on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and streaming online at K-StateSports.com.

K-State plays at KU Tuesday night

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed a pair of backups, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and center Daniel Kilgore, on the COVID-19 list as close contacts as they begin their final preparations for the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay. 

Chiefs coach Andy said Monday he was told of the situation Sunday but could provide no other information. Neither of the players actually tested positive for COVID-19, which means Robinson — a regular contributor — and Kilgore could still play in the Super Bowl. Both would need to return negative tests throughout the week to get off the list.

(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed a pair of backups, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and center Daniel Kilgore, on the COVID-19 list as close contacts as they begin their final preparations for the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay. Chiefs coach Andy said Monday he was told of the situation Sunday but could provide no other information. Neither of the players actually tested positive for COVID-19, which means Robinson — a regular contributor — and Kilgore could still play in the Super Bowl. Both would need to return negative tests throughout the week to get off the list.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball is proposing a one-month delay in starting spring training because of the coronavirus pandemic. Two people familiar with the plan tell The AP that opening day would be pushed back to April 28. 

Under the plan presented to the players’ union on Friday, the regular season would be cut from 162 games to 154. Also, the playoffs would be expanded from 10 teams to 14, the designated hitter would extend to the National League for the second straight season and MLB would keep the experimental rules for seven-inning doubleheaders and beginning extra innings with a runner on second base.

The Volunteers (12-3) won their second straight and notched their second win against a Top 15 opponent this season, a much-needed boost to their resume after COVID-19 issues scratched No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 14 Wisconsin and also a trip to Notre Dame. 

This was just Tennessee’s second win all-time against Kansas in six games. The Vols now are 5-2 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Kansas (11-6) now has lost four of five and dropped to 4-4 against ranked opponents this season.

Pack, a freshman point guard playing in his second game after missing four because of COVID-19 protocols, made eight 3-pointers, going 7 of 9 from the arc in the second half on his way to a career-high 26 points. His only two-point field goal, a floater with 2:12 left, put the Wildcats up three. But Kansas State struggled thereafter with Texas A&amp;M’s pressure in losing its eighth straight.
