OKLAHOMA CITY — Looking for back-to-back victories to avoid elimination from the Big 12 Tournament, Kansas State jumped on 5th ranked Texas Tech early, winning 7-2.

Cameron Thompson and Dylan Phillips each hit solo home runs in the top of the third to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Then, in the fourth, Kansas State sent 11 hitters to the plate and tallied five more runs to take a commanding 7-0 advantage.&nbsp;

"We're in survive and advance mode, so you've got to be really focused for the task at hand because there's no tomorrow," said Kansas State Head Coach Pete Hughes after the win. "I'm excited because at some point, Kansas State baseball has got to be in the conversation for the national tournament, and until today it hasn't."

Texas Tech would battle right back, scoring two in the bottom half of the fourth. The Red Raiders would then load the bases, but the eighth batter of the inning, Dillon Carter would ground out to first to strand three.&nbsp;

Each offense would cool off, and the pitchers would control the game from there on out, allowing Kansas State to remain in control.&nbsp;

Kasey Ford helped the Wildcats get out to their early lead by pitching 3.2 innings and allowing just two runs on one hit. Walks were ultimately what limited him in the effort, as Ford gave up five free bases on 81 pitches.

Tyler Eckberg came on with the bases loaded in a 2-0 count in the fourth inning, where he walked the first batter he faced, on just two pitches, but got out of the inning without further damage. 

Following that, Eckberg was as good as it gets, holding Tech to just two hits in five innings, allowing no runs.

"That inning could have flipped really quick and he came in and he came in there and settled it down, made his pitch, but more importantly, threw up zeros all the way through the end against a really, really good offense," said Hughes of his reliever's performance. "He's the MVP of the game, that's for sure."

Eric Torres came in to record the final out of the ninth inning to solidify the win.

Kansas State improves to 33-22 on the season, inching just a little closer to a potential NCAA Tournament at-large bid.&nbsp;

"I'm going to fight for my guys because they're fighting for me, and I'm almost embarrassed to be fighting to get Kansas State baseball because we're not a brand baseball name, we are not in the conversation." said Hughes. "But I do believe there will be some integrity. The committee works their tails off and are thorough, I just hope they give us the real&nbsp; consideration that we deserve and our kids deserve."

The Wildcats will take on TCU for the fifth time in seven games on Saturday at 9a.m., if Kansas State can defeat the Frogs in that game, they would play a second time in the day. The "if necessary game" would begin at 4p.m. on ESPN+.&nbsp;

K-State fights off elimination, upsets #5 Texas Tech

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State women’s basketball student-athlete Ayoka Lee completed her haul of honors for the 2020-21 season, as she was named to the 2020-21 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team on Friday.

Lee is the eighth player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. She is the third to earn the distinction in the Jeff Mittie era, joining Shaelyn Martin and Peyton Williams.

A product of Byron, Minnesota, Lee graduated in May with her degree in psychology with a 3.88 grade point average. She has been accepted into the couple and family therapy master’s program at K-State and will begin her graduate work in the fall of 2021.

Academically, Lee has been a heavily decorated student-athlete as she is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, a 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District VII First Team selection, a 2020-21 Big 12/Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Award recipient and a five-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member.

On the court in the 2020-21 season, Lee was a 2021 WBCA All-America honorable mention recipient and a preseason candidate for every national award including the Wade Trophy, Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and Lisa Leslie Award.

She completed the 2020-21 regular season with a career-high 19.1 points per game (478 points). Her scoring average this season was the highest by a Wildcat since Brittany Chambers set the school record at 21.0 points per game in 2012-13.

Lee became the first player in the 53-season history of K-State women’s basketball to register 450 or more points, 200 or more rebounds and 45 or more blocks in her first two seasons.

The product of Byron, Minnesota, also recorded a career-best field goal percentage of .621 and a career-best free throw percentage of .812. She led the Big 12 and ranks third in the nation in field goal percentage. She was the only player in NCAA Division I with a field goal percentage of .600 or better and a free throw percentage of .800 or better.

Lee recorded 10 double-doubles, including four straight to conclude the season. Among her 10 double-doubles, Lee registered a 37-point, 18-rebound effort against Oklahoma on January 31. Her 37 points set the school record for points in a Big 12 Conference game, are the fifth-most points scored in any game in school history and the most since Chambers set the school-record of 42 against Texas Southern on March 21, 2013.

In Big 12 play, Lee was even better as she ranked fifth for scoring average with 19.8 points per game and led the league in field goal percentage at .629. She was the only player in Big 12 play to card a field goal percentage of 60.0 percent or better.

On the boards in Big 12 action, Lee pulled in 8.56 per game and ranked sixth in the league. She ranked fourth in the Big 12 in offensive rebounds with 3.11 per game.

KSHSAA Baseball Updates

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Battling through the most challenging year in the field of collegiate athletic training, the K-State Sports Medicine staff has been selected the best in the Big 12 for the 2020-21 athletics year as selected by their peers within the conference.

It marks the third time that K-State has been named the Big 12 Sports Medicine Staff of the Year having also been honored in 2004 and 2017.

Leading the effort within the department is Associate Athletics Director of Student-Athlete Health, Wellness and Performance&nbsp;Matt Thomason, who has been at K-State since 2002. He is assisted by Head Football Athletic Trainer&nbsp;Mindy Hoffman, Ice Basketball Training Facility Sports Medicine Coordinator&nbsp;Luke Sauber&nbsp;and assistant athletic trainers&nbsp;Conner Bennett&nbsp;(football),&nbsp;Shannon Burke&nbsp;(track &amp; field),&nbsp;Blaine Burris&nbsp;(baseball),&nbsp;Zack Davis&nbsp;(track &amp; field),&nbsp;Becca Fitzgerald&nbsp;(women’s soccer/women’s golf),&nbsp;Lizzy Kienstra&nbsp;(women’s basketball),&nbsp;Madison Robinson&nbsp;(rowing),&nbsp;Simeon Seiler&nbsp;(football),&nbsp;Emily Trausch&nbsp;(volleyball) and&nbsp;Megan Won&nbsp;(tennis/cheer). “The past 15 months have been challenging for everyone in college athletics, but the role of the medical staff was instrumental in providing a safe environment for our student-athletes to practice and compete,” Thomason said. “It was a total team effort that went beyond the athletic trainers and team physicians. Sports nutrition, sport psychology, strength and conditioning, coaching staffs – everyone stepped up.”

K-State was one of the leaders in helping the Big 12 Conference put forth COVID-19 protocols for the 2020-21 athletics year as Thomason was on the conference’s working group for recommendation for return-to-activities plan. Thomas and Lafene Health Center Medical Director&nbsp;Dr. Kyle Goerl&nbsp;helped the Big 12 presidents and athletics directors navigate a safe return to all sports in the conference.

“With all that has transpired over the past year, sports medicine staffs across the country have been instrumental in keeping our student-athletes, coaches and staff safe,” Athletics Director&nbsp;Gene Taylor&nbsp;said. “For our staff to be honored during what has been one of the most challenging years in our lifetime is a true testament to their hard work, dedication and care for our student-athletes. What a tremendous honor for Matt and his entire team, and we are fortunate to have them on our staff.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Facing a five run deficit after four innings, the Rock Creek Mustangs rallied back to an 8-5 win over Bishop Ward in the 3A State Quarterfinal round at Tointon Family Stadium on Thursday.&nbsp;

In the fifth, Brooks Whaley, Caden Vinduska, and Mason Sturdy all tallied hits to get onto the scoreboard.&nbsp;

The sixth saw four free baserunners, thanks to three walks and a hit batter, followed by a passed ball, and the Mustangs would take the lead with just one base hit and a pair of sacrifices.&nbsp;

Rock Creek will advance to the semifinal round tomorrow morning from Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, looking for a trip to the Championship.&nbsp;

Rock Creek Baseball moves to State Semifinal

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;K-State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has promoted three staff members among his coaching staff for the 2021-22 season.

Ebony Gilliam has been promoted from her role as Coordinator of Recruiting Operations to Assistant Coach. Sadie Thramer has been elevated from Director of Student-Athlete Development to Coordinator of Recruiting Operations. Staci Gregorio has been promoted to Director of Student-Athlete Development/Video Coordinator.

Gilliam enters her eighth season on Mittie’s staff at K-State and her second stint as an assistant coach. In her first three seasons at K-State, Gilliam served as an assistant coach on Mittie’s staff from 2014-15 to the 2016-17 season. She then transitioned to the Director of Recruiting Operations for the next four seasons.

Prior to her time at K-State, Gilliam served as an assistant coach at TCU on Mittie’s staff from 2012-14.

“Ebony has always brought toughness to our team and our individual players,” said Mittie. “It will be great to get her back on the floor in this capacity.”

Gilliam’s responsibilities will include: working with K-State’s wings and guards, recruiting evaluation, game plan preparation and player development.

Thramer is in her fourth season on head coach Jeff Mittie’s staff and her first season as the Coordinator of Recruiting Operations.

“Sadie has been given many projects and roles within our staff and has excelled in every area during her time in Manhattan,” stated Mittie. “With today’s ever-changing recruiting landscape, she is an excellent person to be promoted into this role.”

In her first season at K-State in the 2018-19 season, Thramer was the program’s Director of Basketball Administration. She transitioned to the program’s Director of Student-Athlete Development for two seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Prior to her arrival in Manhattan, Thramer spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Omaha. While with the Mavericks, Thramer was responsible for organizing and facilitating all the recruiting activities for the program including managing the recruiting budget and handling the logistics of on- and off-campus visits.

Gregorio is in her third season on Mittie’s staff. In her first two seasons, Gregorio was the Director of Video Operations.

“I am excited to promote Staci into a more expanded role with our staff for the upcoming season,” said Mittie. “She has continued to grow in the profession and deserves this promotion within our staff.”

Gregorio’s responsibilities will include: community outreach for the student-athletes and women’s basketball program, coordination of student-athlete academics with K-State’s Academics &amp; Student-Athlete Services department, film exchange with opponents, editing film clips for the coaching staff and players, assisting the coaching staff in collecting and editing film of recruits. She also handles the K-State women’s basketball equipment needs.

For the 2021-22 season, the Wildcats will return eight letter winners led by 2022 All-America candidate Ayoka Lee and All-Big 12 candidate Rachel Ranke. K-State will add the services of five newcomers including: Rebekah Dallinger (Sydney, Australia), Brylee Glenn (Raymore, Missouri), Jaelyn Glenn (Raymore, Missouri) Malene Lind Pederson (Aabyhoj, Denmark) and Serena Sundell (Maryville, Missouri).

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;A pair of day games and an evening home opener highlight the beginning of Kansas State’s 2021 football campaign as the Big 12 television partners announced times and TV designations for the Wildcats’ first three games of the season.

Additionally, the Wildcats will be featured the day after Thanksgiving as their game at Texas has been moved up one day to Friday, November 26, in an 11 a.m., contest shown on FOX.

K-State opens the 2021 campaign at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 4 against Stanford in the Allstate Kickoff Classic inside AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and the game will be broadcast on FS1. The next two games – both at Bill Snyder Family Stadium – will be shown on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as the Wildcats host Southern Illinois in a 6 p.m. contest on September 11 and Nevada at 1:05 p.m. on September 18.

As in years past, all remaining Big 12 game times and television information will be selected on a 12- or six-day basis throughout the season.

The Wildcats trailed 3-0 after five innings, but the power-hitting K-State offense returned thanks to back-to-back home runs from Zach Kokoska and Nick Goodwin in the sixth.&nbsp;

From there, the contest was spun on its head, with the Wildcats pouring on seven runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding 9-3 lead.&nbsp;

"What a special performance from our guys," said Assistant Coach Austin Wates. "All we talked about pre-game was 'we want to get Coach Hughes back in that third base coach's box,' and those guys were fighting like crazy every single at-bat to scratch a win."

The victory saves Kansas State's season, prolonging its bid to sneak into the NCAA Tournament conversations in the final days before the field is announced, as well as allowing Kansas State Head Coach Pete Hughes to return to the field, following his four-game suspension served for an ejection last week versus TCU. 

K-State entered the day 32-22 overall after falling in the bottom of the ninth to nationally-ranked TCU in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament yesterday.&nbsp;

Earning the victory for K-State was redshirt-sophomore Carson Seymour, who came on in relief in the fourth inning and pitched six innings of one-run baseball to lift the Wildcats to the win.&nbsp;

"My confidence has always been pretty high, I mean, I've always believed in myself," said Seymour after the game, "I was just trying to go out there and compete."&nbsp;

The 6-foot-6 right-hander struck out six Bears, allowed just five hits, and pushed Kansas State into day three of the Big 12 Tournament, where they will meet the loser of Thursday afternoon's contest between Texas Tech and TCU.&nbsp;

The victory marked the 33rd of the season for Kansas State, and will undoubtedly improve its NCAA Tournament resume, but all eyes will be on the Cats tomorrow afternoon.&nbsp;

K-State Baseball comes from behind to defeat Baylor

Rhonda Freeman, Junction City, set a state record last Sunday in the Master's Division for Powerlifting in all three lifting categories at the Live Large Midwest Regional Championships in Kansas City, MO. Freeman was able to squat 215 lbs., bench press 135 lbs., and deadlift 270 lbs.

Freeman previously set the state record for Kansas in March. She credits the local Junction City Crossfit for introducing her to weightlifting. The Olympic lifting offered at the gym helped her transition into powerlifting. Her first experience in powerlifting competition was in 2019 at an in-house competition at Performance Nutrition of Junction City.

Fitzsimmons spent three years (1967-70) at K-State, including the last two (1968-70) as head coach, before embarking on a 21-year NBA coaching career that saw him win 832 games with five different franchises. The two-time NBA Coach of the Year (1979, 1989) is one of just 15 coaches with 800 or more victories in NBA history.

The Class of 2021 will be enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., on Saturday, September 11.

Fitzsimmons was among three inductees from the Contributor Committee, including former WNBA Commissioner and current BIG EAST Commissioner&nbsp;Val Ackerman&nbsp;and Co-Founder of the Five-Star Basketball Camp&nbsp;Howard Garfinkel. The trio was joined in the class by former NBA coach&nbsp;Rick Adelman, 11-time NBA All-Star&nbsp;Chris Bosh, four-time NBA All-Star&nbsp;Bob Dandridge, seven-time WNBA All-Star&nbsp;Yolanda Griffith, three-time WNBA MVP&nbsp;Lauren Jackson, two-sport professional athlete&nbsp;Clarence “Fats” Jenkins, three-time EuroLeague MVP&nbsp;Toni Kukoc, four-time AIAW Small College All-American&nbsp;Pearl Moore, 10-time NBA All-Star&nbsp;Paul Pierce, the first Black NBA head coach&nbsp;Bill Russell, four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year&nbsp;Ben Wallace, five-time NBA All-Star&nbsp;Chris Webber&nbsp;and two-time NCAA national champion and current Villanova head coach&nbsp;Jay Wright.

“For the first time in our history, we’ll enshrine two Classes in one calendar year,” said&nbsp;John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the Class of 2021 to Springfield – the Birthplace of Basketball – where we can celebrate them and honor their remarkable achievements and contributions to the game.”

Fitzsimmons is the fifth individual with K-State ties to be named to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, following his mentor&nbsp;Fred “Tex” Winter&nbsp;(2011), whom he followed as K-State head coach in 1968. Other K-State inductees include head coach&nbsp;Jack Gardner&nbsp;(1984) and All-Americans&nbsp;Bob Boozer&nbsp;(2010) and&nbsp;Mitch Richmond&nbsp;(2014). Boozer was elected as a contributor on one of the greatest Olympic teams (1960) of all-time.

A former assistant coach to Winter, Fitzsimmons led the Wildcats to 34 wins, including 19 in league play, and a pair of top-2 finishes in Big Eight play. After helping the school to a Big Eight title and the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals in his lone season as an assistant coach in 1967-68, he followed Winter as head coach later that year and led the squad to a runner-up finish-up finish in conference play in his first season in 1968-69. His second and final team eclipsed the 20-win mark, won the league title with a 10-4 record and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, as Fitzsimmons earned 1970 Big Eight Coach of the Year honors.

Fitzsimmons saw three players earn All-Big Eight honors in his brief tenure, including&nbsp;Steve Honeycutt&nbsp;in 1969 and&nbsp;Jerry Venable&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bob Zender&nbsp;in 1970.

Fitzsimmons left K-State in 1970 to become head coach of the Phoenix Suns, the first of three coaching stints (1970-72; 1988-92; 1995-97) with the franchise. He would coach 21 seasons in the NBA, compiling the 16th-most victories in the league’s history with an 832-775 (.518) record with five different teams, including the Suns, Atlanta Hawks (1972-76), Buffalo Braves (1977-78), Kansas City Kings [currently the Sacramento Kings] (1978-84) and San Antonio Spurs (1984-86). His teams won 45 games on 10 occasions, including 50 or more victories by his Suns’ teams in four consecutive seasons from 1988-92.

Fitzsimmons led his teams to 12 NBA playoff appearances, including three Western Conference Finals appearances (1981, 1989, 1990).

Fitzsimmons was twice named NBA Coach of the Year, first in 1978-79 in leading the Kings to 48 wins and the conference semifinals and lastly in 1988-89 in guiding the Suns to 55 wins and the conference finals.

Fitzsimmons’ Hall of Fame players include&nbsp;Charles Barkley,&nbsp;Walt Bellamy,&nbsp;Artis Gilmore,&nbsp;Jason Kidd,&nbsp;Pete Maravich,&nbsp;Steve Nash&nbsp;and&nbsp;JoJo White.

A native of Hannibal, Mo., Fitzsimmons began his coaching career at Moberly (Mo.) Junior College, where he compiled a 224-58 (.794) record in 11 seasons and won national titles in 1966 and 1967. He was twice named the National Junior College Coach of the Year.

Fitzsimmons was Senior Executive Vice President of the Suns before his passing in 2004 at the age of 72.

Fitzsimmons is also a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (1981) and National Junior College Hall of Fame (1985).

Enshrinement festivities will begin on Friday, September 10 at the Mohegan Sun with the Enshrinement Tip-Off Celebration and Awards Gala. The Class of 2021 will then journey to the Springfield, Mass., for the annual celebratory events taking place at the newly-renovated Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame and MassMutual Center on Saturday, September 11.

After helping the school to a Big Eight title and the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals in his lone season as an assistant coach in 1967-68, he followed Winter as head coach later that year and led the squad to a runner-up finish-up finish in conference play in his first season in 1968-69. His second and final team eclipsed the 20-win mark, won the league title with a 10-4 record and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, as Fitzsimmons earned 1970 Big Eight Coach of the Year honors.Fitzsimmons saw three players earn All-Big Eight honors in his brief tenure, including&nbsp;Steve Honeycutt&nbsp;in 1969 and&nbsp;Jerry Venable&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bob Zender&nbsp;in 1970.Fitzsimmons left K-State in 1970 to become head coach of the Phoenix Suns, the first of three coaching stints (1970-72; 1988-92; 1995-97) with the franchise. He would coach 21 seasons in the NBA, compiling the 16th-most victories in the league’s history with an 832-775 (.518) record with five different teams, including the Suns, Atlanta Hawks (1972-76), Buffalo Braves (1977-78), Kansas City Kings [currently the Sacramento Kings] (1978-84) and San Antonio Spurs (1984-86). His teams won 45 games on 10 occasions, including 50 or more victories by his Suns’ teams in four consecutive seasons from 1988-92.Fitzsimmons led his teams to 12 NBA playoff appearances, including three Western Conference Finals appearances (1981, 1989, 1990).Fitzsimmons was twice named NBA Coach of the Year, first in 1978-79 in leading the Kings to 48 wins and the conference semifinals and lastly in 1988-89 in guiding the Suns to 55 wins and the conference finals.Fitzsimmons’ Hall of Fame players include&nbsp;Charles Barkley,&nbsp;Walt Bellamy,&nbsp;Artis Gilmore,&nbsp;Jason Kidd,&nbsp;Pete Maravich,&nbsp;Steve Nash&nbsp;and&nbsp;JoJo White.A native of Hannibal, Mo., Fitzsimmons began his coaching career at Moberly (Mo.) Junior College, where he compiled a 224-58 (.794) record in 11 seasons and won national titles in 1966 and 1967. Fitzsimmons Named to Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Santana belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Kansas City was held to three hits until the ninth, when Whit Merrifield led off with an infield single before Santana connected against Michael Fulmer. Kyle Zimmer struck out three in two hitless innings for the win.
