MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Manhattan-native and former K-State guard Christianna Carr will play her senior season at Syracuse.

The<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/04/13/k-states-christianna-carr-to-transfer/" target="_blank">&nbsp;former Wildcat</a>&nbsp;averaged 15.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season while shooting 38.8% from the field and 35% from three.

Carr was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention last season and previously earned a spot on the 2019 Big 12 All-Freshman Team.

The Orange finished 15-9. They beat 9-seed South Dakota State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, before ending their season with a loss to UCONN.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) - KU head football coach Lance Leipold has named the new — and remaining — members of the Jayhawks’ coaching staff.

Leipold will bring five coaches who worked with him at Buffalo to Lawrence and keep five who were already with the Jayhawks.

“I am extremely proud of the staff we have assembled here at Kansas,” Leipold said. “It’s no secret how much I value continuity among a coaching staff, and I truly believe we’ve achieved that here. This is a great blend of coaches who know the philosophies and principles I want to bring to this program and coaches who know the ins-and-outs of Kansas Football as well as our current personnel. Chiefs release 2021-22 regular season schedule

ATCHISON, Kan. (WIBW) -The process for selecting mascot replacements for Atchison’s public high school and middle school is set to begin next week, according to KAIR Radio.

Plans to select replacements for the Atchison High School Redmen and the Atchison Middle School Braves were discussed Monday during the Atchison Unified School District 409 Board of Education meeting.

KAIR reports that a 30-person committee, composed of individuals who have an interest in the school district, will meet at 5:30 p.m. May 18 at the Atchison High School library to begin the process of selecting the new mascots.

The KSHSAA is aware the NFHS has approved the use of a 35 second shot clock for basketball beginning with the 2022-2023 season. The KSHSAA staff and Executive Board will consult with member school administrators during the next year to deter­mine the best decision for the student-athletes in Kansas. Because the rule change is a state adoption, it is an option states may want to consider for use, but not required.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 10, 2021) — Beginning with the 2022-23 season, a 35-second shot clock will be permitted in high school basketball games by state association adoption. A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock was not approved.

A shot clock was&nbsp;among the topics discussed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its annual meeting April 20-22 held virtually this year. All recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Rule 2-14 states that each state association may adopt a shot clock beginning in the 2022-23 season -- according to guidelines outlined in the Basketball Rules Book -- to encourage standardization among states. Guidelines include displaying two time­pieces that are connected to a horn that is distinctive from the game-clock horn, and using an alternative timing device, such as a stopwatch at the scorer’s table, for a shot clock malfunction. The guidelines also allow for corrections to the shot clock only during the shot-clock period in which an error occurred and the officials have definite information relative to the mistake or malfunction.

“We provided the committee with a lot of information regarding the shot clock, including responses to a 46-question survey sent to states currently using a shot clock,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and officials and liaison to the Bas­ketball Rules Committee.

Rule 3-5-4e was added to allow players to wear head coverings for religious reasons without obtaining state association approv­al. The head covering shall not be made of abrasive or hard materials and must be attached so that it is highly unlikely to come off during play. Basketball is the sixth sport in which a rule related to the wearing of head coverings or other equipment for religious reasons has been adopted, following volleyball, field hockey, soccer, spirit and swimming.

The official signals were also modified to use the same hand signal for a player control foul and a team control foul. Officials should use Signal 36, which is a hand placed at the back of the head, for both types of fouls. Previously, a team control foul was communicated with a punch of the hand.

“It is redundant to have different signals to communicate that a foul will be charged to a member of the team in control of the ball,” Wynns said. “Officials don’t understand the need to differentiate between a player control foul and a team control foul, and many game participants, table personnel and fans don’t know the difference.”

According to the most recent NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, a total of&nbsp;540,769&nbsp;boys participated in&nbsp;basketball&nbsp;in&nbsp;18,617&nbsp;schools, and&nbsp;399,067&nbsp;girls participated in the sport in&nbsp;18,210&nbsp;schools&nbsp;across the country.&nbsp;It is the third-most popular sport for boys and girls.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- In accordance with updated health protocols issued by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., Sporting Kansas City announced today that home matches at Children’s Mercy Park will return to full capacity beginning May 29 when the club hosts Houston Dynamo FC.

Upon returning to full capacity, Children’s Mercy Park will continue to adhere to a number of health and safety protocols, including mobile entry, cashless payments, hand sanitization dispensers throughout the stadium and increased cleaning and sanitization before, during and after matches. Mask wearing is strongly encouraged but not required under the Unified Government’s latest guidelines, and Children’s Mercy Park will offer a designated seating section where masks will be required for all ticket holders within that area.

Sporting’s home match on May 29 will see the club honor frontline healthcare workers by giving 1,000 tickets to local medical professionals. The occasion will serve as the newest initiative from “<a href="https://www.sportingkc.com/post/2021/03/08/sporting-kc-launches-community-campaign-partnership-victory-project-and-children-s">A Force for Good</a>,” a newly launched campaign in which Sporting and The Victory Project join forces with local partners to serve the community. Additionally, Sporting will join a nationwide effort led by the White House COVID-19 Response Team by offering a 30% discount to vaccinated fans for in-stadium merchandise purchases at a June home match to be determined.

Wilson will join the Tigers with three years of eligibility beginning in the fall of 2021. A Manhattan, Kan. native, Wilson appeared in 39 games in two seasons as a Maverick, averaging 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. A 6-1 forward, Wilson scored in double figures six times, including a career-best 13 points at Purdue-Fort Wayne as a freshman (2/22/20). She corralled at least five rebounds nine times, including a personal-best nine in her hometown at K-State (11/8/19). Kia, pronounced KI-ah, accumulated 174 points, 106 rebounds, 16 assists, 23 blocks and 12 steals in her time at Nebraska-Omaha. She hit 47.6 percent of her shots (69-of-145). Wilson was a four-year letterwinner at Manhattan High School before graduating in 2019. She averaged 13.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game as a senior, going on to earn numerous honors, including first team all-conference, second team Class 6A All-State, KBCA All-Star status and all-tournament team recognition at the Hays City Shootout. Wilson concluded her high school career ranked fifth all-time in scoring and rebounding, second all-time in blocks and as the record holder for field goal percentage at MHS. She helped the Indians win the Kansas Class 6A State Championship in 2017 as a sophomore in addition to a pair of sub-state championships and multiple Centennial League titles. Kansas City, MO. (WIBW) - The Kansas City Chiefs have signed a ceremonial one-day deal with Tamba Hali so that he will officially retire as a member of the organization.

The Chiefs announced the “deal” on the club’s Twitter page Monday morning.

Hali signs one-day contract to retire as a Chief

Kansas City, MO. (WIBW) - Tickets to see the Kansas City Chiefs go on sale to the general public Thursday, May 13, at 12 p.m.

Presale for previous season ticket holders will be available Thursday at 11 a.m.

The organization says tickets can be purchased online at www.chiefs.com.

Officials say ticket sales will be “sold under a full capacity and ticket delivery will be mobile only.”

The on-sale date comes just after the 2021 regular season schedule is set to be announced on Wednesday night.

Two Wildcats sign free agent contracts

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After months of working with state government, education and health leaders, schools in all 50 states have been given the go-ahead to resume high school sports at some level of competition. Schools in the District of Columbia were the last to receive the green light on April 1. This is great news and signals that a return to normalcy may be on the horizon by the time schools begin sports and activities this fall.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unfortunately, there is an ever-increasing issue that could put a kink in the return-to-play plans in Kansas and across the country – a shortage of officials, as in referees and umpires, that borders on catastrophic in some sports and in some parts of the nation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The shortage of officials in high school – and middle school – sports has been a growing concern for several years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has moved the issue to heightened levels.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In some cases, schools that have waited months and months to “play ball” have had to cancel games or reschedule games. There are so many contests occurring, with some states currently playing football and other sports they were unable to offer last fall, coupled with regular spring sports now underway, there simply are not enough people to officiate all scheduled games.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; According to the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO), registration of officials across the country is down about 30 percent this year. In Kansas from 2019-20 to 2020-2021 we saw a 14% reduction of officials registering.&nbsp; Five hundred-twenty fewer officials registered in 2020-2021. In the past 10 years – since 2010-2011 we are down 26% - 1092 few officials registered in 2020-2021. Sports with the largest percent decrease were basketball and wrestling at approximately 17% reduction.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tennessee and Georgia have reported declines in baseball umpires. In one county in Georgia, one middle school had to cancel its baseball season due to a lack of umpires.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In some cases, the number of available officials has declined due to health-related reasons – people opting out this year because of the pandemic. As vaccinations increase and the optics improve, many of these individuals hopefully will return.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For other officials, however, the pandemic was a secondary concern compared to the verbal abuse they receive from fans – mostly parents. It is particularly hard for rookie officials to overcome the verbal shots they hear from parents. In an article in the Salt Lake City Deseret News, Jeff Cluff, assistant director in charge of officials for the UHSAA, had the following to say about unruly fans in his state:&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; “Parents are out of control . . . Because of the club and super-league culture, they think these games mean everything; we don’t look at it that way in high school. Kids are learning, the officials are learning, the coaches are learning. We have lots of people who are interested in officiating. If we could keep these officials, we’d be fine.”

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Schools in Kansas need two things: 1) more individuals to consider officiating high school sports and 2) an improvement in fan behavior so that officials don’t have to deal with verbal abuse and can feel good about continuing to officiate. Due to injuries and COVID-19 protocols, McGuirl was the only Wildcat to start all 29 games, while he played a key role in mentoring one of the youngest teams in the country. Three true freshmen (Davion Bradford,&nbsp;Selton Miguel&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nijel Pack) started together in 17 of 29 games, including 12 in Big 12 play.

Ramirez, Bauers help Indians rally for 7-3 win over Royals

MANHATTAN –&nbsp;K-State women’s basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has signed international talent Malene Lind Pedersen to a National Letter of Intent. Pedersen will join the Wildcat roster for the 2021-22 season.

Pedersen joins previous K-State signees: Rebekah Dallinger (Sydney, Australia), Brylee Glenn (Raymore, Missouri), Jaelyn Glenn (Raymore, Missouri) and Serena Sundell (Maryville, Missouri). Pedersen is the first women’s basketball player in program history from Denmark.

Pedersen, a 5-11 guard, joins the Wildcats from Aabyhoj, Denmark, and is the first Wildcat women’s basketball player from Denmark. Pedersen played her club career with Aabyhoj IF in the Danish Women’s League. She was a two-time Danish Women’s League All-Star team selection in 2019 and 2021.

In the 2019 season, Pedersen was awarded the Danish Women’s League Talent of the Year by leading Aabyhoj IF to the Danish Women’s League title and was named the player of the game in the final. She averaged 14.9 points on a .556 field goal percentage in 17 games, including a .380 effort from 3-point range. She also pulled in 5.1 rebounds and pocketed 1.6 steals.

In 2021, Pedersen played in 13 games and led the squad with 19.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.6 steals. She also handed out 3.1 assists. She tallied seven games with 20 or more points and also carded four double-doubles.

In her international career, Pedersen has played for Denmark Senior and Youth National Teams. In her most recent international experience, Pedersen played in the 2019-20 FIBA Women's Eurobasket Qualifiers with the Denmark Women’s National Team and recorded 1.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.7 assists in three games played.

In 2018, Pedersen took part in the 2018 Basketball Without Borders Camp in Belgrade, Serbia, and was named the camp’s MVP and was selected to the All-Star team.

In 2017, Pedersen helped Denmark’s U16 National Team capture the 2017 U16 Women’s European Championship in division B and named to the All-Tournament Team.

K-State concluded the 53rd&nbsp;season in program history in 2020-21. The Wildcats will return 2021 All-Big 12 recipient Ayoka Lee and preseason 2020-21 All-Big 12 honorable mention selection Rachel Ranke for the 2021-22 season.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - WBCA National Two-Year Player of the Year Rebekah Dallinger will join Jeff Mittie’s squad at K-State for the upcoming season.

The Sydney, Australia-native comes to Manhattan following one season at Miles (Montana) Community College where she earned the 2021 WBCA National Two-Year Player of the Year and 2021 WBCA All-America First Team honors.

While in Montana, Dallinger led the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I in points per game (25.8) and total points (644) en route a 24-2 season ending in the Pioneers’ first-ever national championship.

Dallinger scored 20 or more points in 19 games, including nine games of 30 or more and two games with 40 or more.
