Dorothy Woellhof, 93 died July 20, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on January 17, 1929 in Aurora, KS the daughter of Charles and Rosa (Bliss) Demanett.&nbsp; Dorothy was raised in the Aurora community before moving to Clay Center in 1947.&nbsp; She worked at the Swift Egg Plant and Sunflower Café before moving to Salina in 1950.&nbsp; There, she met and married Melvin Woellhof on October 29, 1950.&nbsp; They returned to Clay Center and Dorothy took a job as the cook for Garfield School.&nbsp; She retired from school food service in 1992.&nbsp; Melvin preceded her in death on December 29, 2007.&nbsp; Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and active in bowling leagues in Clay Center for over 40 years.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents, 6 sisters and 7 brothers.

Maynord E. Sherbert, 82, of Wakefield, died Monday, July 11, 2022 in Manhattan, KS surrounded by his family. He was born April 12, 1940 in Broughton, KS, the middle son of Bert and Opal (Bisnett) Sherbert. He had two brothers, William “Bill” and Jack.

Maynord attended Bala School before the family moved to Wakefield his third-grade year. He attended Wakefield School and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1958. He was one of the first inductees to the Wakefield Bombers Hall of Fame in 2018.

After graduation, Maynord had many occupations. He worked in Little River, KS for Riddle Quarries and worked construction on Fort Riley. He operated a crane for the construction of the Council Grove Dam and Milford Dam and worked for Alsop Sand Plant. He worked construction projects with Maurice Sharp and ran his own business, Sherbert Electric. For a time, he also ran his own construction jobs. With great pride, he worked as the head of maintenance for Wakefield School and as a referee for football, basketball, and volleyball for many years. He served as sexton of local cemeteries and operated Sherbert Mowing with his son and grandchildren.

On July 1, 1960, Maynord married Mildred A. Isbell of Wakefield. They lived in Little River when they were first married and then made their home in Wakefield, Kansas. They had three children, Michael, Mae, and Michelle.

Maynord served his community in a multitude of ways. He served the city of Wakefield as Mayor and City Councilman. He served on the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years and as Fire Chief for 40 years. He served as Superintendent and was a dedicated volunteer for the Wakefield Landscape Arboretum. He volunteered at the Wakefield Museum and helped maintain the museum’s properties. He belonged to the Wakefield Lions Club, Wakefield Booster Club, Wakefield WRA, Wakefield Jaycees, Odd Fellows, and the Men’s Coffee Club.

Maynord most enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved fishing, hunting, softball, golf, gardening, and woodworking. He was a big fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Royals. Most weekday mornings he could be found drinking coffee with his friends. On Saturday evenings he and Mildred enjoyed playing cards at the community center.

Maynord was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Opal, and his brother, Jack.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mildred of Wakefield; his children Michael and wife Vicki of Wakefield; Mae and husband Chance Horn of New Carlisle, Ohio; and Michelle and husband Bob Land of Clay Center, KS; grandchildren Brett, Abby, and Cody Sherbert; Jessica Horn Smith; Zachary Horn; and Stormi Land-Maness; eight great grandchildren; and his brother, Bill Sherbert of Marion, KS.

Maynord enjoyed anything that had to do with kids and community. He has left a legacy of kindness, service, and dedication to family, friends, and community. As a family friend stated, “We all need to be a little more ‘Maynord,’ and the world would be a better place.”

Visitation for Maynord will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, Clay Center, Kansas

Services will be Friday, July 22, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Wakefield United Methodist Church in Wakefield, Kansas

Connie Holmes, 73, of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, July 19th, 2022 at her home with her loving family beside her. She was born May 8, 1949, in Newton Iowa, The daughter of Ken and Mardy Maakestad. They moved to South Dakota where she grew up and graduated from Sturgis High School, Sturgis SD. She then moved to Denver, Colorado, and went to work at the Samsonite Suitcase Co. where she met her husband of 51 years Stan Holmes. They moved to Abilene where she worked at Abilene Country Club, Buds Tire, Jostens, and 25 years with Hurlbut Corp. Convenience Store. Connie retired from Abilene Public Schools as Garfield/Eisenhower kitchens manager. Connie is survived by daughter Tina Warford (Terry) of Salina, sisters Sheila Limbo (Bill) and Dawn Wagness (Ron) both of Sturgis, SD. brothers Scott Maakestad (Ruthie) of Littleton, CO. and Jim Maakestad, Sheridan WY. Edward Junior “Doc” Johnson, age 90 of Manhattan, went to spend eternity with Jesus on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

He was born on April 23, 1932, the son of Carl Edward and Clara Louise (Rahe) Johnson, east of Leonardville in the farmhouse where he spent his life until moving to Manhattan in 2016.

On August 23, 1964 at the Leonardville EUB Church, he married Jean Marie Anderson.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Doc loved his family and friends.&nbsp; He had many stories to tell from his years at Lee Country School within a mile of their home as well as the Leonardville High School class of 1950.&nbsp; He was a lifetime farmer and a rural mail carrier for 40 years until his retirement in 2000.&nbsp; He was on the board of the Leonardville Nursing Home, where he served as Chairman for several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy Sipes and husband Kelly of Holton; one son, David Johnson and wife Peggy of Salina; four grandchildren, Joshua Sipes, Hannah Sipes, Abigail Johnson and Mackinley Johnson; two nephews, Grant MacDonald and Bruce MacDonald and their families who had a very special place in Uncle Edward’s heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Rolland Rahe and two sisters, Sophia Peterson and Lela MacDonald.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church with Rev. Reuben Langat officiating.&nbsp; A private family burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Mary Anne Widler, 87, of rural Enterprise, died on Sunday, July 17, 2022. She was born on July 6, 1935 on her family’s farm in the Sutphen’s Mill area north of Chapman, Kansas. Her parents were Marvin and Alice (Picking) Gfeller. She graduated from Dickinson County Community High School (DCCHS) in Chapman in 1953. She married Frank Lehman in 1954 and they lived in California while Frank was still in the Navy. Following Frank’s service in the Navy, the couple returned to Abilene where the family made its home west of Abilene. Frank and Mary raised six children. They divorced after 37 years of marriage. Mary later married Floyd Widler of rural Enterprise and they farmed together until Floyd’s death in 2016.

Mary worked at the First Presbyterian Church in Abilene as the church secretary for many years. She then worked on the staff at the National Greyhound Association headquarters for more than 20 years before retiring. She enjoyed gardening, antiques, and collecting dolls. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Alice Gfeller, her brother Platoon Sergeant John Gfeller, her sister Lt. Colonel Helen Gfeller, her sister Muriel Wyman, her former husbands, Frank Lehman and Floyd Widler, and her two daughters, Deanna Lehman and Sandra Howard.

Mary is survived by her four sons, Roger, David, Thomas, and Michael (Stacey); seven grandsons, Kalen Howard, Kenton Howard, Blaise Lehman, Brock Lehman, Brogan Lehman, Lucas Lehman, and Bentley Lehman; two great-grandsons, Haydn Howard, Rylan Howard, all of Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 21st at the First Baptist Church, 1697 2100 Avenue, Enterprise, Kansas. Pastor Stan Norman will officiate and will also be joined by Rogers Walls who will assist with the service. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Harold Edwin Smith, age 90, died July 13, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS. He was born May 6, 1932, in Lincoln County, Kansas, the son of Everett and Nannie (Lundstrom) Smith. On November 23, 1955, in Lincoln, he married Katherine Louise LaShell. Harold graduated from Lincoln High School. He served in the United States Army in the Infantry during the Korean War. He and his family spent over 30 years living on a small rural acreage at Sterling, KS and working as a mechanic/technician at the Michigan-Wisconsin/ANR Gas Compressor Station. His most valued role was father, grandfather and mentor where he passed on his knowledge of quality horses, livestock and life skills. He enjoyed being a craftsman, thus a repairman was rarely hired in the Smith household. In 1998, Harold and Katherine moved back to Lincoln County and fulfilled a dream of owning grassland and raising quality horses. Because retirement wasn’t enough, he took a position with the Lincoln County Highway Department as a gravel truck driver. He drove for 5 years. He loved having livestock and always had cattle and at least one horse. He enjoyed being outdoors, camping and staying busy but most of all he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. There were very few times that he wasn’t in the stands at one of the boy’s or grandkid’s livestock shows, baseball games, dance recitals, etc. He was greatly loved by his wife Katherine of Manhattan; two sons: Justin Smith and his wife Donna of Manhattan, KS, and Troy Smith and his wife Robyn of Asher, OK; one sister Elsie Bacon of Wheatland, WY; four grandchildren: Tyler Smith, Kalie Kehler (Travis), April Sidesinger (Ryan) and Sevyn Smith; and six great-grandchildren: Elliott, Rynnlee, Beckett, Lynndee, Lennox and Hadley. Harold was preceded in death by one grandson Laramie, and by six brothers. Cremation is planned. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2022, at the Lincoln Cemetery in Lincoln, KS, with Pastor Todd Burrow officiating. There were very few times that he wasn’t in the stands at one of the boy’s or grandkid’s livestock shows, baseball games, dance recitals, etc. He was greatly loved by his wife Katherine of Manhattan; two sons: Justin Smith and his wife Donna of Manhattan, KS, and Troy Smith and his wife Robyn of Asher, OK; one sister Elsie Bacon of Wheatland, WY; four grandchildren: Tyler Smith, Kalie Kehler (Travis), April Sidesinger (Ryan) and Sevyn Smith; and six great-grandchildren: Elliott, Rynnlee, Beckett, Lynndee, Lennox and Hadley. Harold was preceded in death by one grandson Laramie, and by six brothers. Cremation is planned. Waunita R. Ault, 96, of Wamego, Kansas passed away on July 17, 2022 at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society Care Home.&nbsp;

Born on October 5, 1925 at the family farm at Laclede, Kansas, she was the only daughter of Leslie and Louise (Nies) Schwandt.&nbsp;

She attended local schools in Pottawatomie County and graduated from Wamego High School. She attended Kansas State University for one year and received a teaching certificate. She taught school at Laclede for 1 year before her marriage to Edgar Ault on June 1st, 1946.&nbsp; They were married 58 years. To this union was born five children.&nbsp;

Family and community was the most important thing to Waunita. As a farm wife, she fixed meals to take to the field during harvest and haying season, and often had bottle calves to tend to. She always had a garden on the farm and was an excellent cook. She was a Tannerville 4-H club leader, played the piano and taught Sunday School at LaClede Baptist Church, and was a member of Jayhawk club.&nbsp;

In 1986 Waunita and Edgar moved to Wamego and she became the cook at the Wamego Senior Center.&nbsp; She retired in 1996.&nbsp; She joined the Wamego First Baptist Church where she played the piano for church services until she was 84.

&nbsp;In 2009 Waunita moved into Grandview Suites, then later into Vintage Park. She moved to Valley Vista in 2013 where she lived until her death. She was an avid reader and enjoyed craft time, bingo, and devotions. She was a friend to all who lived and worked at the nursing home.&nbsp;

SFC (Ret.) Luis J. Nater, 81, a thirty eight year resident of Junction City, KS, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2022 at St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka, KS. Cremation will take place followed by a Graveside services that will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, 1:00 p.m at Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, KS with full military honors. He was born on March 5, 1941, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Luis Jose Nater and Trinidad Nater (Rodriguez). Luis served in the United States Army. He retired after twenty four years of service. After his retirement, he worked for the City of Junction City as the director of the water department. He retired after twenty four years of service. Mr. Nater spent forty eight years of his life serving his country and his community. During his service with the city, he was instrumental in the construction of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial and the Rathert baseball stadium. He left a wonderful legacy with his fellow co-workers. After his retirement, he resided in Newberry, FL to be near family. He was a member of The American Legion Post #45. On July 9, 2007, he married Erica Gliniecki. They recently celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary Luis is survived by his loving Wife, Erica, his three brothers; Richard, Jose, and Jimmy Nater and their families. He is also survived by his three children and two step-children. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronald Nater.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina, passed away Monday, July 18, 2022.&nbsp; He was born April 6, 1943, in
 Guthrie, Oklahoma, to Roy M. and Lorene G. (Williams) Ellis.&nbsp; 

Dave was a
 cowboy all his life, he rode bulls and broncs in rodeos and raised 
cattle, was a horse trainer and farrier.&nbsp; He was a member of American 
Farrier Association and American Legion.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Glenna Sue Ellis; and sisters, Delores Cole and Francis Corbin.

He is survived by his daughter, Constance R. Ellis of Manhattan.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, in Greenville Cemetery, Niles.

David Louis Bente Wetzel, loving family man and pioneering analytical chemist, passed away on Monday, July 11, surrounded by loving family while listening to a Schubert lullaby. He was born in the blue-collar town of Rock Island, Illinois, and was proud to have worked construction for Langman &amp; Sons and Farmall, and for John Deere on the assembly line building tractors. After graduating from “Rocky High,” he headed west to Kansas, where his great-grandfather homesteaded in 1861. Dave attended St. John’s College in Winfield and then completed his BA in Chemistry at Augustana College in Rock Island in 1956. At Winfield, he fell in love with an Arkansas girl named Connie Gerdes, whom he later married and loved dearly for 67 years. Dave’s first teaching positions were at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska, and at Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas, where he won a National Science Foundation Award. This allowed him to complete his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at Kansas State University in 1972. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Grain Science and Industry at KSU and pioneered the use of modern analytical techniques such as HPLC and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in the study of wheat, grains and flour. He was a prolific researcher, publishing over 120 scientific articles in 40 different journals, giving over 300 oral presentations worldwide and serving as editor for numerous journals. He published many invited articles, and his NIR photomicrograph of the layers of the retina was chosen for the cover of Science magazine in August 1999. He recently co-patented an analytical technique to improve the efficiency of milling for flour production, which he hoped would someday help improve the global food supply. Dave loved life, and whatever he pursued, he did so with intensity and passion. He loved to travel, especially to scientific meetings around the world, discussing new techniques with colleagues during the day and then going to Karaoke bars with them at night — “King of the Road” was his favorite. He loved summers doing research at Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island, where he also relished eating lobster, sailing, and jumping waves on nearby Fire Island. He served as an academic mentor and loved seeing his graduate students succeed, including one who went on to train 35 graduate students of his own at Harvard Medical School. Dave loved his family and loved family escapades, whether burning the pasture on the old Wetzel homestead near Junction City or driving night and day to Banff National Park to hike the magnificent Canadian Rockies. He loved any time with his grandkids or great-grandkids. He was always ready for a tough job, a new idea, a new friend or a new adventure. Dave was also a man of great faith who was proud of his rich Lutheran heritage. The first Lutheran church service in Kansas was held in his great-grandfather Christian Wetzel’s log cabin, now preserved at the Spring Valley Historic Site in Junction City. His father, Herman, was the longtime minister at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island. His mother, Lois, was the daughter of Friedrich Bente, a theologian and scholar who edited the 1922 Book of Concord, the doctrinal standard of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Herman F.C. Wetzel and Lois (Bente) of Bloomington, Illinois. He is survived by his beloved wife, Constance (Gerdes) of Manhattan and dear sister Rhoda Schirmer of Joliet, Illinois. He leaves sons, Louis and wife Jane (Bichelmeyer) of Westwood, Kansas, and Mark and wife Rita (Kelley) of Roeland Park, Kansas. Grandchildren are Lucas (Jennifer Brothers), David (Kate Naramore), Peter, James (Ariella Miller), Laura (Gage Brummer), Lois, Anna (Dallas Artz), Katie (Wade Ostdiek), Heidi (Josh Hafner), and Paul (Renee Jennings). Jane M. Tapassi, age 87, of Wamego, Kansas, died July 14, 2022 following a short battle with terminal cancer. She was born on February 19, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of John and Marguerite (Gilmore) Wilkey. She graduated from high school with the class of 1953. Jane earned her Bachelors of Science degree from Notre Dame College in 1957. On June 6, 1959 she was united in marriage to Andrew Tapassi. He preceded her in death in 2003. Jane was a devoted member of the Blue Star Mothers, the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the St. John Vianney Church in Mentor, Ohio. She and Andrew loved to do Revolutionary War reenacting especially at Hale Farm &amp;Village for many years. When Jane moved to Kansas, she joined the St. Thomas More parish and was welcomed warmly. She moved to Kansas in 2016 to live near her daughter Andrea, where only the past year lived with her daughter and son-in-law. She was very independent and overly sassy, however gave everyone a beautiful and joyful laugh when she interacted with anyone she met. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Janes love and pride for her family, friends, Catholic faith and Military Veterans ran very deep to the end. In addition to her husband Andrew, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Wilkey. Jane is survived by her son, Andrew Tapassi (Delia), of San Diego, California, and her daughter, Andrea Sinclair (David) of Wamego, Kansas. Also, her seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jane is also survived by her sister Nancy Somintz of Kirtland, Ohio., and two beautiful nieces Beth and Jennifer who were in touch with her always, and nephew, Matthew. She was born on February 19, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of John and Marguerite (Gilmore) Wilkey. She graduated from high school with the class of 1953. Jane earned her Bachelors of Science degree from Notre Dame College in 1957. On June 6, 1959 she was united in marriage to Andrew Tapassi. He preceded her in death in 2003. Jane was a devoted member of the Blue Star Mothers, the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the St. John Vianney Church in Mentor, Ohio. She and Andrew loved to do Revolutionary War reenacting especially at Hale Farm &amp;Village for many years. When Jane moved to Kansas, she joined the St. Thomas More parish and was welcomed warmly. She moved to Kansas in 2016 to live near her daughter Andrea, where only the past year lived with her daughter and son-in-law. She was very independent and overly sassy, however gave everyone a beautiful and joyful laugh when she interacted with anyone she met. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Janes love and pride for her family, friends, Catholic faith and Military Veterans ran very deep to the end. In addition to her husband Andrew, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Wilkey. Jane is survived by her son, Andrew Tapassi (Delia), of San Diego, California, and her daughter, Andrea Sinclair (David) of Wamego, Kansas. Also, her seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Jane is also survived by her sister Nancy Somintz of Kirtland, Ohio., and two beautiful nieces Beth and Jennifer who were in touch with her always, and nephew, Matthew. The family will greet friends during a visitation from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Saturday July 23, 2022 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan, Kansas. Jack Akin

Jerry Wayne Davis, 79, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on Saturday (July 16, 2022) at Wellsprings of Westmoreland. He was a loving husband for 41 years to his wife, Robin Trudy Davis.

Jerry was born July 8, 1943, in Portland, Oregon, to a young Soldier, Orville Eugene “Buster” Davis, and his wife, Amy Lee (Johnston) Davis, from Cushing, Oklahoma. Shortly after Jerry was born, Buster deployed to fight with the Army in Europe during World War II. Buster did not return from the war and the family returned to Oklahoma. Jerry spoke fondly of his time as a young boy in Oklahoma, with his grandparents and older sister, Greta Sue. Eventually, his mother remarried, a young Marine, Edward C. Holden, who moved the family to Manassas, Virginia, and then to San Diego, California. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Jerry lived most of his life in San Diego, graduating from Clairemont High School in 1961; a member of the wrestling and gymnastics team. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts and Life Sciences in 1966 and a master’s degree in Industrial Arts from San Diego State University in 1975. Jerry worked as a teacher for the San Diego Unified School District from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. He was a favorite wood shop, metal shop, auto shop, and science teacher to many students at Collier Junior High and De Portola Middle School, teaching hundreds of young people how to make small projects including hand flyers, radios, piggy banks, and even a surfboard.

Jerry loved working with his hands. He enjoyed woodworking, making small trinkets for the family or helping family and friends with home repairs. He also loved working on car engines of all kinds and could tell you the make, model, and year of just about any car that went by on the road. He enjoyed riding motorcycles in the Buttercup Valley sand dunes in Imperial County, CA.&nbsp; He also loved to travel, making many trips driving across the country in his RV and flying around the world.

&nbsp;He was a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Santee, CA.

He lived a full life, with his wife Robin; two sons, Jon and Terry; two daughters Elizabeth and Barbara; two daughters-in-law, Dawn and Xenedraa; son-in-law, William; nephews, Rod and John; nieces, Dawn and Jennifer; sister-in-law, Tami; and ten grandchildren, Megan, Brian, Joel, Samuel, Emily, Eliza, Ellie, Michael, Madeline, and William.

He was preceded in death by his son Shawn. His gentle demeanor and kind soul will live on in the hearts of many.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

William L. “Bill” McAfee, 86, of Westmoreland, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (July 13, 2022) at the Westy Care Home in Westmoreland.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Born April 5, 1936 in New Carlisle, Ohio, Bill was the son of Henry and Velma (Dunn) McAfee.&nbsp; He married Esther I. Welty on November 22, 1957 in New Carlisle, Ohio.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on August 15, 2002.

Bill had been active with Boy Scouts.&nbsp; An avid sportsman, Bill loved hunting, bowling, watching Nascar and cheering on Jeff Gordon and in his younger days playing baseball. Bill was involved on the defensive end of a triple play.&nbsp; He was a K-State fan and enjoyed working with his hands working on and restoring old cars.&nbsp;

While living in Arizona, Bill loved hiking which brought out his passion for photography, taking many scenic photos while on his hikes and while traveling throughout the country with Esther.

Bill's other passion was flying. He earned his pilot's license before getting his driver's license.

Bill began his career with McCall Pattern Company as a machinist. He retired as Supervisor of Maintenance after 42 1/2 years with the company.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Lindsey (Steve) of Manhattan, KS and Jane Matthews (Joe Jr.) of Tucson, AZ; two sons, Daniel McAfee (Brenda) of St. George, KS and James McAfee (J'Net) of Bellavista, AR; a daughter in law, Terry Umscheid-McAfee of Wamego, KS; three grandchildren, Joseph Matthews III (Sarah), Amber Griffin (Brian) and Elise Piotrowicz (Jesse); seven great grandchildren, Gwendolyn Matthews, Caedmon Piotrowicz, Arden Matthews, Vivian Matthews, Evan Matthews, Daniel Griffin, Tayton Griffin; a sister, Betty Cain (Chas) of Tipp City, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. McAfee was preceded in death by parents; his wife, Esther; a son, David McAfee; and a daughter in law, Carla McAfee.

Bernard was born on the family farm southwest of Westmoreland Kansas on January 8, 1934, the son of Ed and Junia (Kanode) Mayer.&nbsp; He graduated from the Jenkin Rural Grade School and the Westmoreland Rural High School in 1951.&nbsp; After working for local contractors, he served in the U.S. Army from October 1953 to October 1955.

On November 13, 1955, he married Mary F. Rollenhagen at the Westmoreland Methodist Church.

In January 1956, he started at Kansas State and received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering on June 1959, then started his career at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Il.

During his early years at Caterpillar, he conducted Service Training Schools for dealer personnel in Peoria, Il, Denver, Colorado, Atlanta, Georgia, and Spokane, Washington.&nbsp;&nbsp; He then spent 2 years in New Orleans, La, as the first Caterpillar Dealer Engine Field Service Representative, then returned to Morton, Il and worked at the Caterpillar General Office.

At the end of 1969 the family moved to Geneva, Switzerland where they lived for 5 years as he worked in Caterpillar’s COSA Service Engineering.&nbsp; He worked with Caterpillar dealers in most European countries, South Africa and the Middle East.&nbsp; He returned to Peoria, Il in 1975 and worked in Caterpillar Service Engineering until retiring in 1989.

He moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1991 and back to Westmoreland, Kansas in 1997 to be close to family.&nbsp; Living in Westmoreland, he was active in the Westmoreland United Methodist Church, Westy BBQ, Pride, and a board member for the Westy Care Home, and the Rock Creek Valley Historical Museum.&nbsp; Bernard applied and was awarded a grant to have a walking trail built that runs from the Oregon Trail Park on Highway 99 and goes all the way into the town of Westmoreland, concluding at the Rock Creek Historical Society Museum.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Donald and Robert.&nbsp; Survivors include his wife Mary, daughter Renee (Jim) Heath of Westmoreland, Lori (Joe) Harroun of Bloomington, Il, 5 grandchildren, Jason (Janette) Heath, Levi Heath, Hayley Harroun, Nate Harroun, and Steven Harroun, 3 great grandchildren, Skylar Heath, Coleman Heath, and Rylee Heath.&nbsp;

While living in Morton, IL Bernard planned and oversaw the building of 3 homes.&nbsp; Once retiring to Kansas, he planned and built two more houses in Manhattan and Westmoreland, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp; His other lifelong hobby was restoring antique cars. At last count his collection included 5 cars.

A private graveside service will be held at Westmoreland Cemetery.

Doris Strifler, 94, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at the Wamego Health Center.

Born December 21, 1927 in Glarus, Switzerland, Doris was the daughter of Josef and Anna (Steiger) Ladstetter. She married Dannie E. Strifler on July 15, 1952 in Heidelberg, Germany. Doris moved frequently as her husband was in the military until he retired in California; Ultimately they returned to Kansas in 1993.

Doris was raised Catholic but practiced as a Methodist for much of her life. Starting as a young mother she became a fierce advocate for children and the disabled. She was an avid reader and music lover, and quite political; Doris believed in the power of the vote and that one person could make a difference. She enjoyed meeting with her closest friends at their weekly kaffeeklatsch.

Doris dearly loved her family and was happiest spending time with them.

Doris was employed by Disneyland Hotel for ten years, a job that allowed her to stretch her creativity and engage her festive spirit. She also enjoyed, and was skilled at, investing in the stock market.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Young of Wamego, Christel Strifler of Manhattan, and Jane Strifler of Wamego; three grandchildren, Andrew Young (Christine) of Salina, Christopher Young, and Matthew Young both of Wamego; two great-grandchildren, Luke Alexander Young and Peter Daniel Young of Salina; a sister, Christel Hannah Kusch of San Clemente, California; and many nieces and nephews both here and in Germany.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dannie on October 30, 2011; two brothers, Dr. Josef Ladsteetter and Ronald Ladstetter Sr.; and a sister, Hilda Calderwood.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Entombment will be in Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley.

A celebration of life for Doris will be held Sunday afternoon July 24, 2022 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.&nbsp; at the Wamego Senior and Community Center. Friends and family are invited to attend.

Doris Strifler, 94, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at the Wamego Health Center.Born December 21, 1927 in Glarus, Switzerland, Doris was the daughter of Josef and Anna (Steiger) Ladstetter. She married Dannie E. Strifler on July 15, 1952 in Heidelberg, Germany. Edgar Root Copeland, age 86 of Riley, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

Ed or “Root”, as he was known in his childhood days, was born on September 30, 1935, in Waterville, Kansas. Ed was the son of Charles Edgar and Ruth E. (Root) Copeland. He grew up on the family dairy farm with his three sisters. Ed graduated from Waterville High School and attended Kansas State University.

He married the love of his life, Linda Ham in Marysville on June 20, 1954. Ed and Linda were blessed with five children and enjoyed a happy and wonderful life of 68 years.

In addition to his wife, Linda Copeland, he is survived by five children, Terri Bush (Marvin) of Allen, KS, Ginger Grisson (Dave) of Austin, TX, Tammy Sharp (Tim) of Riley, Janice Norris (Kirk) of Riley, Jay Copeland (Vonda) of Riley; seven grandchildren, Megan DiNova (Tyler), Rick Bush, Becky Chase (Kody), Bill Sharp (Rebekah), Jayson Sharp, Kirstyn Norris-Alarcon (Jorge), Kyndall Neal (Derek), Betsy Copeland (Jory Harms) and Charlie Copeland; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Parker and Charlee Smith, one brother-in-law, Hosea Harkness and one sister-in-law, Sharon Wacker and many nieces and nephews.

Throughout his lifetime, Ed gave back to his community and the industry in many roles. He was the CEO of the Riley State Bank from 1987 until his death.&nbsp; He was a board member for Farmers Casualty Insurance, Marysville Mutual Insurance, The Kansas Professional Insurance Agents, and Kansas Independent Insurance Agents associations. He was a former mayor for the city of Riley, as well as a councilman. He was a member of the Shriners, Lions Club, the Riley Methodist Church and a 65-year member in the Masonic Fraternity Sutton Lodge #85. He was an avid K-State season ticket holder. He enjoyed his classic cars, antique tractors, and being up on his farm on the beautiful Blue River. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, farming and watching K-State football and basketball. He was a regular at the coffee club each afternoon at the Short Stop where he could visit and tell stories.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.

Lynn Arlan Bohnenblust, 58, of Leonardville, Kansas passed away peacefully on July 12, 2022, at the Leonardville Nursing Home, surrounded by his wife, children and granddaughter, ending his 27 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Born on September 6, 1963, to Arlan and Nancy (Foulke) Bohnenblust, Lynn grew up on a farm near Riley with his three siblings. During his youth he enjoyed 4-H, FFA, baseball, football, fishing, hunting and working on the family farm. Agriculture ran through his blood. A few of Lynn’s most proud accomplishments from his youth include being a member of the State 4-H Horticulture Judging team and receiving his FFA American Farmer Degree.&nbsp;

Lynn graduated from Riley County High School in 1981. He attended Cloud County Community College and Fort Hays State University, graduating with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. While at Cloud County he was a member of the Great Society and played baseball, where at the time he held the record for the most stolen bases. During his time at Fort Hays, Lynn was awarded the Champion Swine Showman at the Block &amp; Bridle Little I, was a member of the livestock judging team and very much enjoyed the buffalo statue.

On November 30, 1985, Lynn married his high school sweetheart Becki Murphy at Grace Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. God blessed them with three beautiful children: Krista, Kascha and Zach.

In 1986, Lynn began his working career with Gene Williams Construction, where his claim to fame was installing all the tin on the roof of the Manhattan Town Center. In 1989, his career path shifted towards financial services, where he helped families become debt free and financially secure. In 1995, Lynn was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Over the next 13 years, he was determined to not let the disease define or defeat him.&nbsp;Once his MS started to progress rapidly, his focus shifted from serving families to making a positive impact on the younger generation. His drive for this led him to substitute teach at the Riley County and Clay County Community High Schools in the woods shop, agriculture classes and in-school suspension. Anytime he saw the chance to make a positive change in someone’s life, he grabbed the opportunity.&nbsp;

A true family man, Lynn enjoyed spending time with his children, which included coaching their many sports teams (football, baseball and softball), enjoying the outdoors (farming, fishing, gardening and hunting) as well as woodworking. Starting at a young age, Lynn was intricately involved in the Riley County 4-H organization. He wanted to make sure his children and other community youth had the same opportunities he had growing up to learn the various life skills 4-H had to offer. From club member to project superintendent, from parent to 4-H Family of the Year, he played many roles over the decades. Knowing his time was limited, he made it a priority to teach his children and others how to work hard, be humble, always have a positive attitude and never give up.

Over the last four years, Lynn was a resident at the Leonardville Nursing Home where he enjoyed visits from friends and family. He always had two rules: sign your name in his book and take a piece of candy. If he knew you had kids or grandkids at home, he’d tell you to take a piece of candy for them. His giving heart continued to shine through even in the final days of his life. When he was not watching K-State Football reruns or Walker Texas Ranger, he loved having jam sessions where he introduced others to his favorite music of Home Free, REO Speedwagon and Meatloaf.

Lynn is survived by his loving wife, Becki; daughter Krista (Branden) Moore, Clay Center; daughter Kascha (Anthony) Johnson, Chanute; and son Zach, Leonardville; grandchildren Taelyn Johnson and Cadence Brinker; his parents, Arlan and Nancy, Riley; brother Jeff (Dee) Bohnenblust, Altamont; brother Jay (Brenda) Bohnenblust, Clay Center; sister, Karla (Doug) Reisner, Hoisington; his in-laws, David and Angie Murphy, Manhattan; his brother-in-law, Dan (Diane) Murphy, Manhattan; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends who all love, cherish and adore him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herbert and Emma Bohnenblust, and Leroy and Hazel Foulke.

Lynn touched many lives with his giving heart, strength, perseverance and orneriness. He loved Jesus and no doubt sprinted right through the pearly gates and into His loving arms.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on July 21, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on July 22, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Clay Center. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral service in the church fellowship hall. Lulu Mae Hollowell, age 91 of Manhattan, passed from this earth on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 11:00 in the morning.

She was born on April 26, 1931, the daughter of Maynard Eugene and Marvel Ruth (Lee) Zeller on her father’s birthday. She was born at their first home, situated below the Sedalia Church, the second of seven children.

During her young years, Lu rode a horse to a one room schoolhouse, The Sedalia School, along with her older sister Barbara and her younger brother Vernon. She also attended Silver Creek School and graduated from Keats Rural High School in 1949. During her high school years, Lu learned to read music and play the trumpet. Later in life she encouraged her son Walt to play trumpet and enjoyed listening to him perform in many bands and symphonies. Lu also had great athletic ability which she later applied to golf. On her 80th&nbsp;birthday while playing golf in San Francisco, she had a hole-in-one.

Lu always wished she had attended college. Not having that opportunity, she educated herself throughout her life, and was especially interested in American History. She was voracious reader and especially loved reading about pioneers and the setting of the American West. She was a lover of the arts and never passed up the opportunity to visit a museum or introduce one to young people. She loved listening to patriotic music, especially John Phillip Sousa.

Lu married Wayne Hollowell in 1950. They moved to Kansas City and entered the corporate world. They had two children, Walter and Gail. Wayne began his career in business with General Motors and then became an executive with Avon Products. Lu was a wonderful homemaker and supportive corporate wife, always ready to meet the challenge of the next opportunity presented to them as a couple.

In 1967, Avon offered Wayne a promotion to work at their Headquarters in New York City. The family transferred and began a new life in New Canaan, Connecticut, a commuting town to NYC. It was the life of Country clubs and glamourous parties in New York including New Years Eve at the Waldorf Astoria, and dinners at the likes of The Polo Club and The 21 Club. After their East coast years, they moved back to Kansas City and then lived in Albuquerque for many years where they enjoyed seeing Walter’s family grow… and grow.

Lu was an accomplished quilter and an accomplished cook, baker, and stitcher. In her final months, Lu was working on a quilt project that included embroidering blocks with the state flowers of all fifty states. She completed 27 states.

Lu loved Kansas and especially this community of Sedalia to which she had multi-generational ties. She spent many hours gardening at the church, helping with Vacation Bible School, and other church activities. She also loved The Silver Creek Beneficiary Club for women, to which her mother belonged before her.

She is survived by her son, Walter Hollowell and wife Ginger of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her daughter, Gail Biddle and husband Hank of Mill Valley, California; ten grandchildren, Colleen, Alysia, Eli, Megan, Jake, Drew, Kurt, Casey, Christie and Clint; eight, soon-to-be nine great grandchildren and four siblings, Barbara Brownlee, Vernon Zeller, Jack Zeller and John Zeller.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Hollowell in 2017 and two sisters, Virginia Zeller and Corrine Snow.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2022 at the Sedalia Community Church with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Sedalia Cemetery.
