Kathleen Ann "Kay" Ball Hamilton, 91, Overland Park, formerly of
 Manhattan, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023, at Colonial Village, 
Overland Park, KS.

Kathleen was born in McPherson, KS 
on September 23, 1931, the daughter of the late Henrietta Lucille (Witt)
 and John Anthony Wahl. She graduated from Alma High School, Alma, KS in
 the class of 1949. Kathleen and Robert E. Ball were married on October 
1, 1949, in Alma, KS. They were happily married for 43 years and raised 
two daughters in Manhattan. Robert passed away on November 28, 1992. 
Kathleen was married to her second husband, Clinton B. Hamilton, on May 
22, 2004, in Manhattan KS, and he passed away on February 28, 2007, in 
Manhattan. Kathleen and Clint traveled to many areas, but their main 
enjoyment was dancing. She was a former member of the Seven Dolors 
Catholic Church in Manhattan.

Kathleen is survived by 
two daughters, Teresa Ann (Archie) Cloud, of Kit Carson, Colorado; Mary 
Kathryn (Dick) Eiserer, of Olathe, KS. She is also survived by five 
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by
 her parents, her husband Robert Ball and husband Clinton Hamilton, and 
two brothers, John R. Wahl and William L. Wahl.

A 
private graveside service will be held at Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan,
 KS.

Lloyd Miller was born at 4:20 a.m., March 31, 1926, in Bethel 
Deaconess Hospital, Newton, Kansas.&nbsp; He died February 14, 2023, in 
Wichita, Kansas.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 20, 2023, from 1:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Frank Funeral Home in Wellington, Kansas.

Graveside Services will be held on February 21, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Murl &amp; Lucile Miller, a 
son Lloyd Miller Jr., his sisters Virginia Hulpieu and Beverly Hiebert,
 his brother Kenneth Miller and his wife of the home, Donna Miller.

He is survived by 3 nieces, Gynia Crane, Marva Hiebert &amp; Lori 
Seron and 6 nephews, Mitchell Miller, Roger Miller, Russell Miller, 
Gordon Hulpieu, Quinton Hiebert &amp; Jay Hiebert.

He started playing the piano at age 5, played in church at age 7 and 
was the church pianist at age 12.&nbsp; At age 17, he played in a piano 
audition with 20 pieces and was given a grade of 1+.

This was interrupted by World War II.&nbsp; He took basic training in 
Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.&nbsp; Going overseas, he passed New 
Guinea, the Solomon Islands and landed on Luzon, Philippines.&nbsp; He was in
 the service for a total of 25 months, spending 18 months overseas.

After his return home, he completed a Bachelor of Music and Piano 
Performance at Washburn Municipal University in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; He 
received two honors there being inducted into the Pi Gamma Mu (Social Sciences) and the Mu Alpha Pi
 (Music).&nbsp; He later earned a Bachelor of Music Education at the 
University of Wichita and then a Master of Music Education at 
Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

He began teaching music at Zenda and Hazelton, Kansas, then 
instrumental music at Borger, Texas and Arkansas City, Kansas.&nbsp; After 
additional schooling for administration, he was a principal at Nashville
 and Zenda, Kansas.&nbsp; He coached girls sports in both Denison and 
Burnette, Kansas.

During this time, he received a seminary degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.

After retirement, he got involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars 
organization.&nbsp; He served as a commander of the Newton and Wellington 
posts, as quartermaster for Newton and Wellington posts and as a 
chaplain for both Wellington and Wichita.&nbsp; He also served as a chaplain 
in the fifth district and was Kansas state chaplain for 8 years during 
which time he dedicated all four state veteran cemeteries at Dodge City,
 WaKeeney, Winfield and Manhattan.&nbsp; Lloyd also served as the Western 
Conference chaplain for 2 years and he and his wife Donna both 
volunteered at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield for a total of 20 
years.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas in lieu of flowers.

Kathleen “Kathy” Marie Montgomery, 64, was 
born on Friday, February 13, 1959, at Resurrection Hospital in Chicago, 
Illinois, to Bonny (Brown) Shay and Richard Shay. She lost her battle 
with cancer on February 16, 2023. She is survived by 2 sons, Christopher
 Shay of Austin, Texas, and Ryan Montgomery of Manhattan, Kansas. 3 
grandsons, Ethan Montgomery of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Liam Shay of 
Chicago, Illinois, and Elliot Montgomery of Manhattan, Kansas. And, her 
life partner Craig Bethke of Appleton, Wisconsin, and his family (Warren 
Bethke of Appleton, Wisconsin, and William and Ashley Bethke of Wausau,&nbsp; Wisconsin)

Kathy spent her childhood living on the North side of Chicago. She 
attended Catholic schools until the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. 
She graduated from Chaparral High School in 1977. She was active in High
 School sports (Volley Ball and softball) and was a cheerleader.

Soon after High School, she married Gary Montgomery who was in the 
Air Force. The Air Force necessitated many moves from bases in Nevada, 
Utah, Georgia and Alaska. The family retired to Manhattan Kansas. Kathy 
had many jobs through her life. Gas station attendant, car rental, 
casinos, child care, restaurants and retail at ZCMI, Lane Bryant, 
American Eagle, Walmart and lastly at Walgreens. Her work opening and 
managing stores for American Eagle led to her coming to Appleton 
Wisconsin in 2000 to manage the store in the Fox River Mall.

After 30 years, the marriage to Gary ended, she remained in the 
Appleton area. She met Craig in September of 2013. They found great 
happiness together. She made their house a home and was his partner in 
every way possible. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, travel, sports, 
being on the water (boating, rafting and canoeing), watching old movies 
and Christmas. They had many wonderful adventures together. Her cancer 
was diagnosed&nbsp; February of 2021. After some success, the disease took 
her February 16, 2023. She had many thanks and appreciation for the care
 she was giving by her primary doctor, Oncology doctors, nurses and 
staff at Aurora Bay Care Hospital, Aurora Palliative Care, Lombardi 
Cancer Center and Aurora Hospice.

Paul Ryan “L.P.” Beliel, age 37, of Junction City, Kansas, formerly of 
Washington, Iowa, died Monday, February 6, 2023, in Junction City, 
Kansas. Celebration of life services will be held at 2:00 p.m.
 Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the United Presbyterian Church in 
Washington with Chaplain Bo Waldo officiating. The family will be 
present to receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. 
Interment with military honors will take place at the Pleasant Hill 
Christian Church Cemetery in rural Washington. Memorials have been 
established for an Education Fund for Paul’s daughters. Online

 Paul was born June 23, 1985, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Paul V. and
 Karla Jo (Farrier) Beliel. He grew up most of his life in the 
Washington, Iowa, area and graduated from Washington High School in 
2003. After graduating early, he tried his hand at becoming a cowboy in 
Utah with his great uncle Chewy. When that did not work out as he 
planned, Paul returned to Iowa where he enlisted in the army at 19 years
 old. He completed his basic training at Fort Benning then went straight
 into airborne school. His first duty station was at Fort Bragg, NC. 
During his airborne school graduation, he told his mother that he was 
going to be a “black hat” or Airborne Instructor one day. He fulfilled 
this goal while at Fort Benning, a job he very much enjoyed. He 
especially enjoyed mentoring and encouraging younger soldiers. LP served
 multiple tours of duty including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation 
Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He has served many roles across his 
18-year career in the military. In 2009, he met his wife, Amy,
 at a mutual friend’s wedding. It wasn’t until 6 months later they 
reconnected again on New Year’s Eve and their relationship started, at 
first long distance until she joined him in North Carolina. They married
 on New Year’s Eve in 2012 while living in North Carolina. Soon after 
they moved to Alaska, where Paul was stationed at JBER in Anchorage. 
There they had their first daughter Baleigh in September 2014. After three&nbsp; years in Alaska, Paul was stationed to Fort Benning in Georgia for a few
 years where he and Amy had their second daughter, Adeline (Addie) in 
October of 2017. They missed the endless outdoor beauty and activities 
in Alaska so moved back there to enjoy it with the girls. They most 
recently moved to Junction City, Kansas to be closer to family and Paul 
planned to finish his last two years of service then retire from his 
military career. Paul was a self-proclaimed country boy who 
loved Dwight Yoakam and everything outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, 
fishing, camping, kayaking, and hiking. He was an avid gun collector and
 builder. He spent a lot of time working on many different projects 
including beautiful wood furniture and unique welding pieces using rebar
 and horseshoes. He enjoyed playing with his girls and involving them in
 whatever project he was working on. In between assignment locations, he
 and Amy would often take several days to enjoy the drive from one place
 to the next, exploring and camping along the way. Paul is 
survived by his wife, Amy Beliel of Junction City, Kansas; two 
daughters, Baleigh Beliel (8) and Adeline “Addie” Beliel (5); mother, 
Karla Beliel of Marshall Islands; father, Paul V. Beliel and friend 
Carla Hildebrand of Wayland, Iowa; grandmother, Gerry Farrier of 
Washington, Iowa; grandmother, Iva Beliel of Wayland, Iowa; uncle, Kim

Paul Ryan 'L.P.' Beliel

Chris Anthony Gottschalk of Hays, 
Kansas, passed away in his home Tuesday, February 14, 2023.&nbsp; He was born 
in Manhattan, Kansas, on May 18, 1959, to Cecil and Dorothy (Befort).&nbsp; 
Chris graduated from TMP in 1977. On November 17, 1979, he married 
Krista Leiker at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays.

Chris worked in the oil field for most 
of his career. Through a life spent on the wells, he made life-long 
friends and considered many in his cohort his extended family.&nbsp; He 
leaves behind a lasting legacy in Kansas oil, notable both for his 
accomplishments in the industry and for those whose lives he touched.

Chris lived life to its fullest. As a 
lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, he was thrilled to watch his team win 
the Super Bowl this year.&nbsp; In true Chris fashion, he enjoyed the game 
surrounded by family and friends while hosting the best gameday party in
 town.&nbsp; His love of life was only outweighed by his generosity toward 
others, a trait for which he will be well-remembered.

He was actively involved with Thomas 
More Prep-Marian serving as the Vice President of the Alumni board.&nbsp; 
From the sideline to the board room, Chris was a devoted supporter of 
TMP. Few things brought him as much as joy as his years spent watching

Ellicott City, Maryland; 5 siblings, Gregg Gottschalk (Patricia) of 
Hays, Galen Gottschalk of Hays, Troy Gottschalk (April) of Westminster, 
Colorado, Jan Meade (Joe) of The Colony, Texas, and Becky Serri (Andy) 
of Sarasota, Florida; and 8 Grandchildren, Teagan Gottschalk, Adilyn 
Gottschalk, Jonah Gottschalk, Remington Gottschalk, Lily Gottschalk, 
Miles Gottschalk, Emerson Burkman, and Donovan Burkman.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a God-child Shane Gottschalk, and his father-in-law Don Leiker.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 17, 2023, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays.

Visitation will be Thursday 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM at the church with a&nbsp;combined rosary and parish vigil will be 7:00 PM.

Chris graduated from TMP in 1977. On November 17, 1979, he married 
Krista Leiker at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays.Chris worked in the oil field for most 
of his career. Through a life spent on the wells, he made life-long 
friends and considered many in his cohort his extended family.&nbsp; He 
leaves behind a lasting legacy in Kansas oil, notable both for his 
accomplishments in the industry and for those whose lives he touched.Chris lived life to its fullest. As a 
lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, he was thrilled to watch his team win 
the Super Bowl this year.&nbsp; In true Chris fashion, he enjoyed the game 
surrounded by family and friends while hosting the best gameday party in
 town.&nbsp; His love of life was only outweighed by his generosity toward 
others, a trait for which he will be well-remembered.He was actively involved with Thomas 
More Prep-Marian serving as the Vice President of the Alumni board.&nbsp; 
From the sideline to the board room, Chris was a devoted supporter of 
TMP. Few things brought him as much as joy as his years spent watching

Richard M. Chambers, 62, of Chapman, passed away on February 12, 2023, at Abilene Memorial Hospital. Cremation has occurred and a celebration of life will take place in Arizona at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org). Rich was born on March 26, 1960, to Fred and Thelma Chambers (Stuart) in Phoenix, Arizona. He had eleven siblings where they shared memories of hunting and fishing in Arizona. He graduated high school in 1978 and went on to trade school for the sheet metal union, Local #359. He worked in the trade for twenty-five years. Rich and Chris married in 1986, in Arizona where they made their home. In 2014, they relocated to Kansas. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in the outdoors, playing board games/cards, and was an avid reader. He is survived by his wife, Chris; four children, Sarah, RJ, Joshua, and Staci; three grandchildren, Justin, Ethan, and Tatum; ten siblings, a mother-in-law and a brother-in-law. Richard M. Chambers

Jason Anthony Avila, age 46, was born in Hanford, California, on July 13th, 1976. He left this earth a sadder place on January 28th, 2023.

Jason attended schools in Hanford, Flagstaff and Modesto California until he moved to Manhattan, Kansas, at the age of 9. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1995. After high school, he returned to California and attended Cuesta Community College in San Luis Obispo. He moved to Fresno California and obtained a degree in computer technology and worked with a company that was installing cell phone towers in California and Nevada.

When he passed away, he was working for Contemporary Services Corporation, which allowed him to work professional and college sports as well as concerts in various cities. His last trip out of town was to work the Rose Bowl in January.

He loved his family, his friends, the SF Giants and Kansas State University. Hard to say which would be his number one love! Jason was preceded in death by his father, Gene Avila. He is survived by his mother and step father Nancy and Jim Parker of Manhattan, Kansas, his brother Patrick (LaVonn) of Central City, Nebraska, his sister Michelle and brother Tim (Janan) of Visalia, California as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a huge and loving group of friends in Fresno. All will carry his memory with them. He will not be forgotten!

Private celebrations of life will be held in Fresno and Manhattan with burial in Minneapolis, Kansas, next to his beloved Grandfather.

George was born in Fargo, ND October 18, 1922. Was graduated from North Dakota State High School. 
Enlisted in the Army during World War II. Served in the 104th 
Timberwolf Infantry Division and saw combat in France, Holland, and 
Germany. Was promoted to Artillery First Lieutenant in the Korean War 
where he trained troops in Japan. Awarded the Bronze Star and three 
unit citations. 
After completing his journalism studies at the University of Missouri, 
he worked in marketing for the Junction City Daily Union, the 
Omaha World Herald, WOW Radio &amp; TV in Omaha, Des Moines Register 
&amp; Tribune, Business &amp; Industry Magazine in Des Moines, Iowa 
Power &amp; Light Company, and the Home Builders Association of Greater 
Des Moines. 
He took pride in being a 32nd degree Mason, a Za-Ga-Zig Shriner, an 
AHEPA, and a member of the Kiwanis Club and Toastmasters International. 
Hunting, target shooting, golf, reading, and writing were his joys. 
George was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Betsy Mirras; 
sister, Margaret Neff; and niece, Sandra Loughlin. He leaves his 
brother, Colonel Pete Mirras of McLean, VA; grand nephews, Aaron and 
Andrew Loughlin of Kansas City, MO; Tom and Ladonna Gratias of Clive, 
his close-like family-friends. 
A memorial visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Monday, February 20, at

Kay Lyn Dumler Dinkel, 67, passed away Wednesday, February 15th, 2023, at her home in rural Russell Kansas surrounded by her family.&nbsp;

Kay was born March 12, 1955, in Russell to Carl A. Dumler and Florence E. (Keil) Dumler. She lived her entire life in&nbsp;Russell and&nbsp;graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1973. She married her forever best friend and love, Bryan on August 10, 1974. They were very proud parents of Brent and Todd. They were the absolute&nbsp;pride and joy&nbsp;of their lives. Kay and Bryan were involved in all of the activities that the boys took part in, and Kay often said that those boys, now young men, fathers and husbands, were the greatest and proudest accomplishment of her life.&nbsp;

This union also brought them four wonderful&nbsp;grandchildren:&nbsp;Braden, Jordyn, Brooklynn and Preston Dinkel. Kay cherished and loved being a grandmother, because she never really had the opportunity to have grandparents in her life, as they passed when she was very young. So, she tried her best to make the most of being a&nbsp;grandmother and&nbsp;being involved in their lives as well.&nbsp;

In her spare time, Kay served as a Den mother for local Cub Scout groups, was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church Altar Guild and taught Sunday School. She also served as a County Board Member for the Russell Regional Hospital, and on the Kansas Center for Assisted Living (KCAL) Board.&nbsp;

Kay was actively involved in the Healthcare industry in and around Russell for over 40 years. She earned her Associates Degree in Health Information Technology in 2001 from Hutchinson Community College, and her Bachelors Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership in 2004 from Friends University. She loved her healthcare colleagues, and especially the patients and residents who touched her life. She always tried her best to be a good friend, co-worker, family member and citizen.&nbsp;

Kay loved her farm and animals,&nbsp;raising oak trees,&nbsp;and was happiest and complete when she and Bryan built their new home on the farm in 2021. They worked side by side together to make it a loving family home.&nbsp;

Kay is survived by her husband Bryan&nbsp;Dinkel&nbsp;of the home; son Brent Dinkel wife Stacy, and children Braden and Jordyn of Manhattan, KS; and son Todd Dinkel wife Andrea, and children Brooklynn and Preston of Hays, KS.&nbsp;Her surviving family also includes sisters Jean&nbsp;Naegele, Rita Forsyth, Jody Myers and brother Carl&nbsp;Dumler&nbsp;Jr.&nbsp;

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held in Russell, date and time yet to be determined.

Floyd E. "Gene" Nelson, 88, of Salina, Kansas, passed away February 15th, 2023.

Gene was born in Clay County, Kansas, on September 8th, 1934, the son of Floyd E. Nelson and Rose M. (Hicks) Nelson.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Naomi (Walker) Nelson.

Survivors
 include 3 daughters, Peggy Jean Hughes (Pat), of Stillwater, Oklahoma, 
Francee Cox (Doug Ochs), of Minneapolis, Kansas, Paula Tomlins (Byron), 
of Topeka, Kansas; son, John Hiebsch (Wendy) of Wichita, Kansas; 8 
grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sisters, Karen Wells (Dan Francke), and Sharon Babst (Larry).

Floyd E. 'Gene' Nelson

Jerry A. Bradley, 83, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2023. Visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society, PO Box 22324, New York, NY 10087. He was born on June 9, 1939, in Culpepper Township, Arkansas, to Jesse and Eunice (Lockhart) Bradley. Following his education, he entered the United States Army in August of 1956, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Joining the ranks as a military policeman, he served at Fort Banks, Massachusetts, until his departure for Germany in 1958. His first two years in Europe were served in Munich, Germany, with the 508th Military Police Battalion. From 1960 to 1962, he served in Wildflecken, Germany, with the 3rd Armored Rifle Battalion. CSM (RET) Bradley served two honorable tours of duty in Vietnam as a platoon sergeant; first with the 5th Battalion 2nd Air Defense Artillery (attached to the 3rd BDE 1st Infantry Division) from 1968 to 1969, and then with the 101st Airborne Division from 1971 to 1972. In 1977, he became First Sergeant of VULCAN Battery of the 1st Battalion, 59th Air Defense Artillery, 8th Infantry Division, in Mainz, Germany. A year later, he was promoted to Sergeant Major and was the Chief Operations Sergeant Major of the 10th Air Defense Artillery Group (HAWK Missile), 32nd Air Defense Artillery Command, in Darmstadt, Germany. CSM (RET) Bradley attended several first sergeant schools and graduated from the Sergeants Major Academy in 1976. From 1981 to 1983, Bradley served as the Command Sergeant Major of the Devil Brigade of the "Big Red One" Division at Fort Riley. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and numerous foreign decorations. On September 20, 1960, he married Rethie (Middleton) Bradley, in Lilbourn , Missouri. Together they raised three children, two sons and one daughter. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Rethie; his children, Lori Bradley of Greenville, South Carolina, Jon (Mary) Bradley of San Antonio, Texas, Todd (Tamara) Bradley of Aloha, Oregon; ten grandchildren, Jen, Chris, Jon, Brendan, Sidona, Molly, Jackson, Julia, Hannah, McKenzie; five great grandchildren, Noah, Gwen, Coraline, Paxton, Huxley; two sisters, Claudia and Connie; and three brothers, Junior, Steve, and Bruce. Joining the ranks as a military policeman, he served at Fort Banks, Massachusetts, until his departure for Germany in 1958. His first two years in Europe were served in Munich, Germany, with the 508th Military Police Battalion. From 1960 to 1962, he served in Wildflecken, Germany, with the 3rd Armored Rifle Battalion. CSM (RET) Bradley served two honorable tours of duty in Vietnam as a platoon sergeant; first with the 5th Battalion 2nd Air Defense Artillery (attached to the 3rd BDE 1st Infantry Division) from 1968 to 1969, and then with the 101st Airborne Division from 1971 to 1972. In 1977, he became First Sergeant of VULCAN Battery of the 1st Battalion, 59th Air Defense Artillery, 8th Infantry Division, in Mainz, Germany. A year later, he was promoted to Sergeant Major and was the Chief Operations Sergeant Major of the 10th Air Defense Artillery Group (HAWK Missile), 32nd Air Defense Artillery Command, in Darmstadt, Germany. CSM (RET) Bradley attended several first sergeant schools and graduated from the Sergeants Major Academy in 1976. Kent Dick, age 61, of Manhattan, died February 10, 2023 in Harris, Missouri.

Kent
 Allen Dick was born on September 20th, 1961, to Larry and Joyce 
(Mitchell) Dick in Mount Ridge, KS. He was brought up in a large loving 
family with his sisters Kim, Kelly, brothers Keith, Kevin and many 
cousins in Buhler, KS. He grew up hunting, fishing, helping on the farm,
 bailing hay, attending the Mennonite church, and causing mayhem. He 
graduated from Buhler High School in 1979. He then attended Hutchinson 
Junior College where he received his Associates Degree. Following his 
passion of learning and science he continued his education at Kansas 
State University where he earned his Bachelors and later his Master’s in
 Education.

He stayed in Manhattan after college and 
began his 35-year teaching career with the USD 383 School District. He 
was a teacher at Manhattan High School and then later Anthony Middle 
School where he taught biology, physical science and chemistry to 
thousands of students over several decades. He also taught a summer 
Field Biology course, where he would teach the ecology of the Flint 
Hills and would take the group camping to the Colorado Mountains. He was
 part of countless other opportunities to be involved in student 
academics. He loved teaching because he can share his passion for 
science, bad jokes, and corny T-shirts. He was inspired daily by his 
fellow teachers and students to strive to be the best educator he could.

One
 of his true joys of life was coaching, whatever sport he could. He 
coached for 27 years including football, girls and boys basketball, and 
track and field. He would spend countless hours watching games, studying
 plays, and conjuring strategies for his teams success. He believed 
sports was a great opportunity to help kids develop skills and life 
lessons. To show support to Manhattan’s teams he volunteered as part of 
the MHS chain gang and also became bus driver certified to drive the 
teams to and from games. He also coached his daughters’ Parks and 
Recreation teams with some of his closest friends.

In 
1994, he married Resa Price, in their union they had two children: 
Kenzie and Natalie. He saw being a dad as one of the greatest 
opportunities he was given by God. He took his children on many summer 
road trips, camping, daddy-daughter dates, and spending anytime he could
 with his kids. He showed his love for his parents by going on trips 
with his dad and always being there to take care of them. He valued the 
relationship to his friends from college (the Goomers) as though they 
were his family and loved getting together at any opportunity for 
fishing, hunting, and story-telling. He showed his unconditional love to
 his whole family and was always there to lend a helping hand, a back to
 lean on, or a shoulder to cry on to anyone who needed it.

He
 was raised and baptized in the Mennonite Church. He was heavily 
involved at Manhattan Mennonite Church. He acted as an Elder, Sunday 
school teacher, mentor, and friend. He volunteered as much of his time 
as he could serving the church and his greater Mennonite community. His 
faith was an integral part of his life, honoring the Mennonite and 
Christian values through every action and relationship he had.

He was preceded in death his mother Joyce (Mitchell) Dick, sisters Kelly Dick, Kim (Tipton) Dick, and brother Kevin Dick.

He
 is survived by his father Larry Dick, wife Resa Price, daughters Kenzie
 Dick, Natalie and Logan Dick-deGraffenried, brother Keith and Jeanette 
Dick, nieces Katherine Dick, Adriane Dick, and Chanell Tipton.

A
 lover of motorcycles, football, the outdoors, and a life-time learner. 
An adamant opposer of onions, traffic and crows. A man who lived his 
life fully and lived by the words “If they don’t find you handsome, they
 should at least find you handy.” Kent Dick made an impact in the 
classroom, on the field, at home, and in his community. We will miss you
 deeply but your legacy will live on in us all.

Kent A. Dick

Margerete Smith, age 89, of Manhattan, Kansas passed away on February 13, 2023, in her home.

She was born on April 14, 1933, to Johann and Anna Ruhmann in Frauenaurach, Germany.

Margarete
 met William L. “Billy” Smith, a member of the US Army stationed in 
Germany. They required an interpreter while dating and also when they 
were married. The marriage took place on April 16, 1955, in Freaunaurach 
where they were legally married in an American Court before walking to 
the service in the local church. The couple moved to the United States 
on July 30, 1955.

Billy preceded her in death on March 
9, 2020.  She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, son 
William Estell Smith and his wife Donna Smith and granddaughter Amanda 
Mesa.

Together they had eight children: Monica Houston 
and her husband Billy Houston, William and his wife Donna Smith 
(deceased), George Smith, John Smith, Terry and his wife Debbie Smith, 
Homer and his wife Deb Smith, Rosalee and her husband John Lyttle, and 
Denis Smith. She also has 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Margarete was a devoted mother and homemaker who enjoyed cooking, crocheting and ceramics.

Memorial
 services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 20th, at the 
Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel.  Private inurnment will be in

Barrie James Mebane, age 67, of Manhattan, died February 13, 2023, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

He
 was born on February 2, 1956, in Fort Carson, Colorado, the son of 
Walter and Bertha Mae (Gillim) Mebane.  After graduated high school, 
Barrie joined the U.S. Army.

He served in the Army for over 20 
years.  Barrie was a parachute rigger in the army, and also worked as a 
supply specialist.  He earned many different awards during his service 
time.  After his retirement from the army, he continued to work at the 
Florence Corporation in Manhattan.

On April 7, 1990, he was united in marriage to Terri Holcomb.  She survives at their home in Manhattan.

Barrie
 favorite times when he was able to be outdoors and relaxing while 
fishing or doing yardwork, and taking care of his animals, especially 
his 2 dogs and cat.

Barrie was preceded in death by his parents, and also his siblings: Edward Mebane, Walter Mebane Jr., and Angela Mebane-Foust.

In
 addition to his wife Terri, he is also survived by his sister, Brenda 
Anderson of Durham, North Carolina; also his niece Toyia Elstak, and 
also his other nephews, family members and many friends and neighbors.

Sharron Erickson, 79, of Manhattan, Kansas, and formerly of Hawkeye, Iowa,&nbsp; died Friday, February 3, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in

 was born December 7, 1943, in West Union, IA, the daughter of Harold 
and Thelma (Ruroden) Patrick. She attended elementary school in Elgin 
moving to Hawkeye and graduated from North High School in West Union in 
1962. On Jan 25, 1964, she married the love of her life Robert Erickson 
at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, IA and to this union 4 children 
were born. Sharron was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great 
grandmother and worked various jobs throughout her life. When Sharron 
wasn’t home playing solitaire, catching up with friends and family on 
Facebook or spending time with her late dog Chanelle, you could always 
catch her at numerous events supporting her children and grandchildren, 
and you could definitely find her listening to some old school country 
music and of course, Elvis. Sharron loved life and was a giver. She gave
 many hours volunteering at church and for the community, taking care of
 her grandchildren during summer breaks and after school, and being 
there for her children when they needed her.

Gene
 Kindel, age 73, of Aurora, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 
2023, at home surrounded by his family.&nbsp; Gene was born on April 14, 1949,&nbsp; in Concordia, Kansas, to William “Bill” and Bernadine (Cote) Kindel.

He married Kathleen May on June 14, 1969, in Concordia, Kansas.

Gene was employed at Cloud Ceramics of Concordia, Kansas for 40 years until his retirement in April of 2014.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 3rd Degree K of C St. Michael Council #2114 both of Aurora, and Bishop Thill Assembly 4th
 Degree K of C.&nbsp; He was also a member of the Heartland Auto Club.&nbsp; Gene 
was the Bingo chairperson of the K of C Hall in Aurora for many years 
and was known as the Bingo Man. He also coached Pee-Wee Baseball in 
Aurora for many years.&nbsp; He enjoyed shooting Blue Rock and woodworking.&nbsp; 
Gene loved attending his grandkids sporting events and most of all 
spending time with his family and friends.

He
 is survived by his wife, Kathy of the home in Aurora, daughter, 
Kathleen Miller (Tony), Aurora; sons, Mike Kindel (Jackie), Concordia; 
Allen Kindel (Missy), Aurora; Kevin Kindel (Jennifer) Aurora; sisters;

Gene Kindel

Randy Glen Hayes, 66, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2023. He
 was born June 20, 1956, in Holton, Kansas, the son of Charlie Glen and 
Edna L. (Conger) Hayes. He graduated from Rossville High School in 
Rossville, Kansas in 1974. Randy operated Taco Hut in Manhattan, Kansas, then owned and operated Great Bend Taco for 37 years prior to his retirement. Randy
 married Debra Croucher on June 2, 1975 in Lyndon, Kansas. They later 
divorced. He remarried to Lisa Winter on September 18, 1995, in 
Manhattan, Kansas. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Hayes of 
Wichita, Kansas; sons, Brad (Brittany) Hayes of Victoria, Texas and 
Chris (Emily) Hayes of Topeka, Kansas; step-daughters, Jody Mikhail and 
Megan Winter of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Marsha Gifford of Osage City, 
Kansas; brothers, Richard Hayes of Vancouver, Washington and Darrell 
Hayes of Richland, Washington; grandchildren, Taylour Thomas, Kirsten 
Hayes, Lane Hayes, Calvin Hayes, Gracie Hayes, Miles Pfeiffer, Luis

Randy Glen Hayes

Gary L. Lindbloom, 79, Topeka, transitioned to his eternal life 
Friday, February 10, 2023, surrounded by family.  He was born in 
Eskridge Kansas, the third son of Wilford and Eileen (Pearson) 
Lindbloom.  He attended Miller grade school, Rapp Country school and was
 a 1961 graduate of Osage City High School.  In high school, Gary played
 basketball and was active in the Future Farmers of America, where he 
was elected President his senior year.

After high 
school, Gary worked in the Kansas City Stockyards while receiving his 
Auto Mechanic School Certification.  After graduation, he returned to 
Osage City to join the family farming operation where he was mentored by
 his father, W.C. Lindbloom.  It was there, he pursued his lifelong 
passion as a Cattlemen-Farmer.  His passions were his cattle and Quarter
 horses he bred to be used on the farm.  The family farm was a 
partnership with his father W.C. Lindbloom and his brother Dick 
Lindbloom.  It was a large operation with 1,500 head of cattle that 
owned over 3,500 acres of land, rented another 3,500 acres and was 
featured in the New York magazine in mid 1970s recognizing the farm as a
 multinational business enterprise.

Gary met Oneta 
(Dowell) at his Osage City Prom in 1961.  They married on January 11, 
1964 at Lebo Baptist Church.  In 1968, Gary and Oneta started their 
family of three girls (Traci, Vikki, and Erin).

Gary showed his 
love for his daughters by fixing bicycle tires, repairing wagons, 
saddling horses, and assisting with their 4H projects including horses, 
cattle and sheep.  He regularly attended the girls’ sporting events and 
especially enjoyed teaching his girls how to ride a go cart and 
minibike.   Gary was a member of the Stotler Evangelical Covenant Church
 where he and his family attended regularly.

Aside from
 farming and his family, another one of Gary’s passions was flying. He 
received his pilot’s license in 1969 including single engine, 
multi-engine and instrument ratings.  He owned his own plane while 
serving in the Kansas Flying Farmers and participated in charities such 
as the Cappers Penny a Pound flights and many other projects.  He also 
served several years on his Township Board.

Following 
the farm crisis of the 1980s, Gary transitioned from Ranching to selling
 Real Estate, where he sold over a million dollars of real estate in his
 first year.   He worked for Bill Lewis Realtors, Coldwell Banker and 
Countrywide Real Estate in Topeka.  He also worked at the Osage County 
Appraisers office while selling real estate.   Gary and Oneta moved from
 Osage City to Topeka in the early 2000’s, where they became members of 
Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene.  After retiring from real 
estate, Gary worked at Sam’s Club in Topeka until his heath declined in 
2017 and he began living with his daughter Vikki, and son in law Gary 
Hinck.  He was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

 is survived by Oneta Lindbloom, Topeka and his children, Traci (Tavis) 
Holsinger of Olathe, Vikki (Gary) Hinck of Topeka, Erin (Justin) Hart of
 Price Utah, his eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his 
brother Lowell Lindbloom (Jeanine), Topeka.  His grandchildren include 
Connor (Avery) Holsinger, Mitchell Holsinger (Olathe), John Hinck 
(Topeka), Kennedy (Lucas Paris) Hinck (Topeka), Katelyn Hinck 
(Manhattan) and Brett Hinck (Topeka), Rylan Hart (Salt Lake City, Utah),
 Maddux Hart (Price, Utah) and one great-grand daughter Cassidy Hinck 
(John-Topeka).   Gary was preceded in death by his parents Wilford and 
Eileen Lindbloom and his oldest brother Dick (Nancy) Lindbloom.  The 
family would like to thank the dedicated staff of the Kelley house of 
Topeka on Fairmont and Ascend Health Hospice of Lawrence for their 
caring and compassionate care for Gary during his final days.

 services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 18, 2023, at 
Rapp Cemetery west of Osage City. The family will receive friends Friday
 evening from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in

Gary L. Lindbloom

Gerald J. "Jerry" Anstett died on February 8th, 2023, in Plover, 
Wisconsin, at the age of 98.  He was the last of nine children, 7 boys 
and 2 girls.  He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Irene (Bisch) 
Anstett; daughter Deborah Anstett, husband David Dekker, Plover, WI; 
granddaughter Kathryn  Anstett-Dekker and fiancé Jeremiah Petersen, 
Stevens Point, WI; grandson Nathan Dekker and fiancé Jenna Welsh of 
Wauwatosa, WI; Danielle Dekker Shircel, husband Curt Shircel and 
great-grands Oliver and Dallon of Racine, WI; grandson Tyler Anstett 
(Terry’s son) and wife Alicia Gofreddi and great grands Turner and Elena
 of Denver, CO; daughter-in-law Carole Wilds of Leonardville, KS; 
granddaughter Alyssandra, husband Travis Gilbert and great grands Flynn 
and Ryker of Manhattan, KS.  He is also survived by many nieces and 
nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jerry was born in
 Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan, Canada, coming to the United States with his 
family at the age of three.  He graduated from Moorhead Minnesota High 
School in 1942.  He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944-46.  
In 1949, he received his Bachelor’s degree and in 1951 his Master’s 
degree from the University of North Dakota.  He was married to Irene and
 their son Terry was born while Jerry attended college at UND. Jerry 
lettered in track and field and basketball while at UND.

After
 graduation, he joined the high school staff at Mahnomen, Minnesota,&nbsp; where he taught and coached for 5 years.  In 1956, he joined the teaching
 and coaching staff at Oak Creek, Wisconsin where he was also named as 
the school’s first Athletic Director. He retired from Oak Creek after 35
 years in the teaching profession.  During his career, he coached 
football, basketball and track.  In 1985, he received an award for his 
contributions to the sport of track from the Wisconsin State High School
 Track Coaches Association.  In 1986, he was named Athletic Director of 
the Year by the Wisconsin Association of Athletic Directors.  Anstett 
was co-founder of the Oak Creek Recreation Department, where many young 
people first participated in activities preparing them for later 
experiences in sports at the high school and college level.  In 1985, he 
was selected as Oak Creek’s Citizen of the Year for his work with the 
Recreation Department, the school district and with the Police and Fire 
Departments where he administered physical and endurance tests to the 
officers.

In 2015, Oak Creek named the high school track
 after Jerry, honoring him as the founder of the sport of Track and 
Field for the Oak Creek Franklin School District.  He was the first 
track coach in the district and coached the sport for 15 seasons.  
During that time, his teams won the outdoor conference track and field 
title for many years including six consecutive years from 1966 through 
1971.

Jerry enjoyed music and was active with his 
church choir for many years.  He also supported musical events at the 
schools and with his family.  He played the violin, as did his daughter 
and grand daughter Katie.  He was a supporter of the Milwaukee and 
Phoenix symphonies and the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra in 
Stevens Point, WI.

After Jerry’s retirement, he and 
Irene traveled extensively in Europe, the Soviet Union and Africa. In 
1991 they purchased a home in Sun Lakes, Arizona where they wintered 
each year.

Jerry was pre-deceased by his eight siblings
 and his son Terry. Terry had also attended the University of North 
Dakota on a track and field scholarship. Memorial contributions may be

Jerry will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held this summer in Baraboo, WI.

and Ryker of Manhattan, KS. He is also survived by many nieces and 
nephews, other relatives and friends.Jerry was born in
 Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan, Canada, coming to the United States with his 
family at the age of three. He graduated from Moorhead Minnesota High 
School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944-46. 
In 1949, he received his Bachelor’s degree and in 1951 his Master’s 
degree from the University of North Dakota. He was married to Irene and
 their son Terry was born while Jerry attended college at UND. Jerry 
lettered in track and field and basketball while at UND.After
 graduation, he joined the high school staff at Mahnomen, Minnesota,&nbsp; where he taught and coached for 5 years. In 1956, he joined the teaching
 and coaching staff at Oak Creek, Wisconsin where he was also named as 
the school’s first Athletic Director. He retired from Oak Creek after 35
 years in the teaching profession. During his career, he coached 
football, basketball and track. In 1985, he received an award for his 
contributions to the sport of track from the Wisconsin State High School
 Track Coaches Association. In 1986, he was named Athletic Director of 
the Year by the Wisconsin Association of Athletic Directors. Anstett 
was co-founder of the Oak Creek Recreation Department, where many young 
people first participated in activities preparing them for later 
experiences in sports at the high school and college level. In 1985, he 
was selected as Oak Creek’s Citizen of the Year for his work with the 
Recreation Department, the school district and with the Police and Fire 
Departments where he administered physical and endurance tests to the 
officers.In 2015, Oak Creek named the high school track
 after Jerry, honoring him as the founder of the sport of Track and 
Field for the Oak Creek Franklin School District. He was the first 
track coach in the district and coached the sport for 15 seasons. 
During that time, his teams won the outdoor conference track and field 
title for many years including six consecutive years from 1966 through 
1971.Jerry enjoyed music and was active with his 
church choir for many years. He also supported musical events at the 
schools and with his family. He played the violin, as did his daughter 
and grand daughter Katie. He was a supporter of the Milwaukee and 
Phoenix symphonies and the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra in 
Stevens Point, WI.After Jerry’s retirement, he and 
Irene traveled extensively in Europe, the Soviet Union and Africa. In 
1991 they purchased a home in Sun Lakes, Arizona where they wintered 
each year.Jerry was pre-deceased by his eight siblings
 and his son Terry. Terry had also attended the University of North 
Dakota on a track and field scholarship. Memorial contributions may be

Roger Lee Farrell, age 84, of Viroqua, WI, passed away on Saturday, 
February 11, 2023 at the Soldiers Grove Health Center, where he resided 
for the past month. He was born in Sabin, Richland County, WI on April 
27, 1938, the youngest of seven children of John and Elma (Robinson) 
Farrell. He attended the Sabin School until 8th grade and graduated from
 Richland Center High School in 1956. He then joined the Marine Corps 
and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. Roger married Sharon Lynn Crook
 on November 5, 1960 in New Lisbon, WI and they celebrated their 62nd 
anniversary this past fall. He worked in construction throughout the 
state of Wisconsin. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, morel mushroom 
hunting and the outdoors. He liked reading, especially books on World 
War II.   He also loved traveling and never met a stranger. His strong 
Irish heritage showed in his laughter and the jokes and stories he 
enjoyed telling. Roger was bigger than life and persevered through the 
many health challenges that plagued him these past few years.

 is survived by his wife and partner through life, Sharon “Lynn” of 
Viroqua; his four daughters: Robin (Joe) Edmunds of Manhattan, KS, 
Renita Kay (Craig) Starr of Viroqua, Rochelle Farrell of Kingman, AZ, 
and Rhonda (Jim) Endicott of Viroqua; seven grandchildren: Rachel 
(Bryan) McCoy of Kansas City, MO, Jordan (Michael) Chen of Manhattan, 
KS, Ashley (Nick) Veglahn of Viroqua, Scott (Holly) Starr of Viroqua, 
Corey (Katie) Starr of Viroqua, Ben (Emily Green) Endicott of Topeka, 
KS, and Amanda (Brett) Endicott-Naples of Portage, MI; 
great-grandchildren: Rowan Chen, Landon Chen, Riley Veglahn, Axel Starr,
 Landen Starr, Blake Starr, as well as a new baby Chen in the fall; his 
in-laws: Doris Thompson of Viroqua, William (Betty) Crook of Readstown, 
and Jeannie (Clarence) Callies of Juneau; many nieces and nephews; a 
special cousin, Rose Westbrook of Firebaugh, CA; and his childhood 
friend, Tom Bee.

In addition to his parents, Roger was 
preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Wilma (Gayman) 
Wanless, Norman (Leola) Farrell, Robert (Marcellee) Farrell, Virginia 
(Gail) Connelly, Jean (Don) Goplin, and Joan (John) Olson; his 
parents-in-law, Fred and Edith (Ward) Crook; and several members of the 
Crook family.

A Celebration of Roger’s Life will be 
held at a future date, which will be announced.  Burial with Military 
Honors will be in the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery, Preston, MN.  
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials in Roger’s name may be directed
 to a charity of choice.  Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in
 Viroqua is entrusted with his services.  Blessed be the memory of Roger
 Lee Farrell.

 back on our lives we probably all wish we had done some things 
differently. We can languish in self-pity for hardships we face along 
the way but looking around there is someone, somewhere that is truly 
worse off than ourselves. My wife and life partner had every right to 
self-pity and bitterness, but she chose not to go down that dark path. 
Kathryn (Kathy) Eileen Yonning Richardson left her broken body behind 
and passed on Monday, February 6, 2023, to join our son to watch over 
me. Kathy was born on November 23, 1952, in Onaga, Kansas, to 
James and Marylin (Wegner) Yonning. She grew up in Manhattan, Kansas,&nbsp; and graduated from Kansas State University. She was preceded in death 
by her parents, her brother Wayne Yonning, and our son, Nikolaus Drake 
Richardson. Her closest surviving relatives are her aunt, Arletta 
Bennett, of Aurora, CO, her sister-in-law, Janet Yonning (Wayne’s wife) 
of St. George, KS, brothers and sisters-in-law David Richardson (Sharon)
 of Cleveland Heights, OH, Ralph Richardson (Beverly), of Olathe, KS, 
and me. Kathy and I met in 1973 in downtown Manhattan, Kansas, at 
the Vista Villager. It was a chance meeting on a very warm summer night,
 introduced by a mutual friend, Cindy (Anderson) Stitt, when we all were
 having the urge for ice cream. Thinking she was way out of my league, 
it took quite some time for me to get the courage to ask her out. The 
rest is truly history. We were married in 1975 in Manhattan while we 
both were attending Kansas State University. She completed both 
undergraduate and graduate studies. She received her Master’s degree in 
Biology soon after we were married. She was an active member of the 
Alpha Xi Delta sorority as well as with her fellow Biology graduate 
students. Thanks to her frugal nature, and skill at budgeting (and 
sticking to it!), we were able to live on her research and teaching 
assistantship stipend. Her research was in pancreatic regeneration and 
was leading edge research that has been the basis of techniques used 
today. Her major professor, Brian Spooner, never forgave me from 
stealing her away before he could get her to follow up on her work with a
 PhD. After graduation our life journey took us to Auburn 
University, the University of Tennessee, Purdue, North Carolina State 
University, and then back to Kansas. She worked in research in labs at 
Auburn and the University of Tennessee. At Auburn, working in a lab at 
the Veterinary School, she interacted with many students from around the
 US and the world. She was the instigator of several “international” 
potluck dinners in our relatively cramped mobile home in Conway’s 
Trailer Park. When in Tennessee she loved our trips into the Smoky 
Mountains where we enjoyed camping, trying to catch enough trout for a 
meal, sliding down the mountain ravines on piles of Fall leaves in Cades
 Cove, and playing tourist in Gatlinburg and surrounding areas. Our 
son, Nikolaus, was born in Knoxville just before the World’s Fair. 
Nik’s god parents are our close friends Lyda and DJ Krahwinkel. We
 then made our first “post being a student” move to Lafayette, IN where I
 took my first faculty position and Kathy settled into being the most 
wonderful mother our son could ever have. She was very active in the 
church choir and helping with vacation bible school. My brother, Ralph 
and his family, were in Lafayette where he too was on the faculty at 
Purdue. It was wonderful having family near and the chance for cousins 
to get to know one another. Her one harrowing experience in Indiana was
 a frozen gas line stalling the car on a country road in the midst of a 
frigid winter storm. Pre-cell phone era, Kathy, ever prepared, bundled 
Nik in a blanket and hiked to a farmhouse where all turned out fine. Our
 next move was to North Carolina where I was on faculty. In 1989 she was
 diagnosed with a tumor within her spinal cord. Her recovery following 
surgery was nothing short of miraculous. 1991 found us back in Kansas, 
close to home and able to be close and provide support for aging 
parents. Soon to follow was a recurrence of her tumor and a diagnosis 
of MS. A second surgery in 1993 resulted in her requiring a wheelchair 
and the MS kept her in the chair for the remainder of her life. Kathy’s
 personality was such that she absorbed the negative and reflected the 
positive throughout her life. She didn’t have the time, and ultimately 
didn’t have the energy to put up with arguing or outright negativity. Even
 when trapped inside a physical body broken by a spinal cord tumor and 
MS, those that knew her know she never complained. She was kind, smart, 
and gracious. She always smiled, which our son Nik inherited. She was a
 very strong individual that quietly inspired others by her actions, not
 her words. She fought fearlessly to maintain her independence and was 
very self-sufficient up until the very latest years of her life. 
Besides the challenging physical constraints, in 1999 she had to deal 
with the loss of our son. Nikolaus, the high school student body 
president, the kid that everyone liked, the son that was our pride and 
joy, smart, effervescent, loving, kind, compassionate, and smart, became
 a victim of suicide. This forever changed us. We only had 2 choices, 
go forward or not. Kathy battled through and we chose to go forward, 
not give up. We were and have always been a team, leaning on each other 
for support. In 2008 we were asked by Kansas State University to lead 
the development of the new Kansas State University Olathe campus. I say 
“we” because the leadership at KSU knew we were a team. So, while I 
worked on getting the campus built, she became involved with the Olathe 
Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board (PDAB). This was one of the 
happiest times of her life. She was the instigator and integral to the 
establishment of a voluntary review process in Olathe for new or 
remodeled buildings to help exceed the minimum requirements of the 
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in order to achieve a more 
universal design for accessibility. The new KSU Olathe campus was one of
 the first to benefit from this review process. The campus received the
 first award for accessibility given out by the board and the city of 
Olathe. Unknown to most, Kathy was an accomplished artist and 
writer. I was the sole beneficiary of her art as she was quite private 
and did not choose to “exhibit” her work. I received hand painted cards 
on Christmas, Valentines, birthdays, and anniversaries with her original
 personal, heartfelt verses that were thematic with the picture. The 
painting always represented something current in our life together. Slowly
 her body became her limiting force. Losing her ability to paint was 
probably the greatest loss for her. However, she still did not 
complain. She cherished the visits from friends and family. My brother
 David and sister-in-law Sharon as well as their son, our nephew Mark 
Richardson, and his family, made numerous trips from Ohio and Maryland 
respectively over the last few years to be with her. Their daughter, our
 niece Helena, never missed communicating with Kathy on Mother’s Day, 
Nik’s Birthday, nor the anniversary of Nik’s death. My brother Ralph and
 sister-in-law Beverly in Olathe were ever at our beck and call whenever
 we needed them. She loved those visits, even when she wasn’t able to 
interact and visit to the time and level she would have wished. These
 last few years have been challenging to everyone. We need to remember 
being shut in, unable to get out and socialize are hardships but nothing
 like what Kathy and others in her situation endure for life. My 
greatest joy in life is knowing that when people see me, they see Kathy.
