Margaret Crook, age 99, of Manhattan, died Thursday August 3, 2023 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born on October 6, 1923 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond Ross and Alice (Boyd) Taylor. She grew up in Topeka and attended local schools and graduated from Topeka High School with the class of 1941. Her grandparents were in the first graduating class of Topeka High School of 1871. One of her grandfathers lived in Gettysburg and attended the Gettysburg address. Her father and his brother were the sons of Taylor nurseries in Topeka and worked closely with Kansas State University Ag department and sent apple seedlings all over the U.S. They came to Oakwood farms in Topeka in 1849 and lived there for 85 years.

Margaret was married to William V. Crook in 1941 in Pueblo, Colorado. He preceded her in death in 1992. She then was married to Lark. D. May in Topeka in 1997, he passed away in 2005. She later was married to Wallace Jeffrey, he preceded her in death in 2019.

Margaret and William were blessed with four children: William V. Crook Jr., Bruce R. Crook, Thomas R. Crook, and Carol Anne Crook. Margaret worked for many years as an assistant to the Riley County Engineer's until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. Her philosophy in life was to have a little fun every day. And she did! She loved people and could talk and laugh with the best of them.

In addition to her husbands, Margaret was also preceded in death by her son William “Billy” Crook Jr. and also her daughter Carol Anne Crook.

She is survived by her sons, Bruce Crook and Tom Crook and her step-son Gerry Jeffrey and step-daughter Dixie Coursen; also her 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Judy Lee Luthi, 67, of Abilene, Kansas, passed away at home with her husband Loran by her side on July 31, 2023.

Judy was born September 22, 1955, to Myron and Leora Simnitt, in Clay Center, Kansas. She and her two sisters, Rhonda and Dawn, grew up on a farm north of Green, Kansas. Judy graduated high school from Clay Center in 1973. She chose to continue her education, attending college in Manhattan, Kansas, and then began working at Kansas State University in the Dean’s Office of the School of Business.

Judy married Loran Robert Luthi on April 10, 1976 in Green, Kansas. She worked at South Western Bell Telephone Company in Junction City, Kansas, at the time and then later decided to focus on her next adventure, running the farming business and raising a family with Loran. Judy and Loran began their family in 1980 with the first of their four children, Deedra, Raymond, Kimberly, and Melanie.

Judy loved her family. She didn’t hesitate when someone in her family needed something, she would always show up and would always be there whether on the other end of the phone or on the other side of a hug. In recent years, her grandchildren, whom all call her “nana”, really brought a joy to her life. She loved helping on the farm - she kept busy times running smooth because she was always a step ahead of the rest. Judy also really enjoyed traveling - she and her family took many trips together.

Judy is survived by many loved ones: her husband, Loran Luthi, her daughter, Kimberly Brungardt, and grandchildren Leora Brungardt and Helen Brungardt, her daughter, Melanie Luthi, and her family Marcus Craig, Sianney Craig, Mireyah Craig, and Marquel Craig, her granddaughter, Harlee McDaniel, her mother, Leora Simnitt, her sister, Rhonda Slingsby, her sister, Dawn Langvardt and husband Greg Langvardt, sister-in-law, Natalie Wood and husband Darrell Wood, and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Judy was predeceased by her daughter, Deedra Luthi, son, Raymond Luthi, father, Myron Simnitt, and brother-in-law, Warren Slingsby.

Patricia Suzanne “Sue” (Pacey) Chavey passed away on August 1, 2023, at the Good Shepard Hospice House in Manhattan, KS after a courageous battle with cancer.

The daughter of Franklin and Aurelia Pacey, Sue was born the oldest of 6 children, on September 12, 1947, in Concordia, KS. She attended the Hammerli one-room schoolhouse, followed by Miltonvale Rural High School.

She married Tom Chavey on February 12, 1966 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Miltonvale, KS and together they raised their two children, Debbie and Ed. After farming in rural Cloud County, KS for 20 years they moved their family to Manhattan, KS. Sue graduated from Kansas State University with a medical technology degree in 1985 and enjoyed a nearly 25-year career in the Veterinary Medicine department there. She was especially proud of her work with rhino ferritins (iron proteins), which afforded her the opportunity to travel to Kruger National Park in South Africa, implementing new blood testing procedures.

Tom and Sue were married for more than 50 years and enjoyed traveling across 6 continents. They were avid K-State fans and supported the Wildcats as football season ticketholders for more than 30 years, where they could be found at each home game tailgating with lifelong friends.

They were members of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church where Sue participated in the bell choir, served as a eucharistic minister, and acted a funeral luncheon coordinator. She supported the Manhattan community through her involvement in P.E.O., Little Apple Pilot Club and the Konza Prairie Quilters’ Guild. After the passing of her husband, Sue’s daughter Debbie became her traveling companion and the two especially enjoyed their last trip together to the Holy Land. Sue’s bond with her sisters was also a special one and the group enjoyed their annual sister’s weekends in fun locations. Her love for travel, K-State, and quilting was only eclipsed by the love for her family and watching her 4 grandchildren grow.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband Tom Chavey, father Franklin Pacey and brother Michael Pacey.

She is survived by her mother Aurelia Pacey, children Debbie (Scott William) Chavey Webb, Ed (Michelle) Chavey, grandchildren Nick (Kerby) Webb, Lindsey, Haley and Emma Chavey, siblings Marie (John) Green, David (Carol) Pacey, Loretta (John) Sampson, Polly (Scott) Martin, sister-in-law Mary Pacey and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends during a visitation on Thursday August 3, 2023 from 6:00 until 7:00p.m. at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

A Christian Wake Service with the Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home following the visitation.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday August 4, 2023 at the St. Isidore Catholic Student Center, 711 Denison in Manhattan. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday August 4, 2023 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Joseph, Kansas.

Patricia Suzanne “Sue” (Pacey) Chavey 

Dr. Warren Lamar Beard, DVM, age 65, died July 24, 2023 unexpectedly at his residence in Olsburg, Kansas. Warren was an equine veterinary surgeon and had worked at Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine since 2004.

Dr. Beard was born February 25, 1958 in Corpus Christi, TX to Nathaniel Gerald Beard and Vida Stephenson Beard. He was married to Dr. Laurie Beard, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVIM and they have two children, Nat and Anne. He is survived by his wife, children, mother (Vida), sister Julie Borgan, brother Dr. Bradley Beard, niece Dr. Caroline Borgan, and nephew Zachary Borgan. Warren grew up in Houston and New Orleans. He discovered his passion for veterinary medicine by spending time with his uncle Dr. Edward “Booster” Stephenson (a veterinarian) and his wife Pat. He also spent a lot of time with his cousins Baret and Cris Stephenson.

Dr. Beard received his bachelor’s degree (Magna Cum Laude) and DVM degrees from Texas A&amp;M University in 1982 and 1983 respectively. He entered private practice in Dickinson, Texas, for two years before moving to Ohio State University to begin a residency in equine surgery. He completed his surgical residency and received a master’s degree in surgical sciences in 1988. In 1989, he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He remained at Ohio State until 2004, before leaving to start a new position at Kansas State University.

Dr. Beard was well respected as a veterinary surgeon, in addition to his outstanding mentoring of veterinary students and residents. Not only was Dr. Beard known for his success regarding his career, he was also passionate about living life beyond his job. Dr. Beard enjoyed fly fishing (trout and salmon), skiing, hunting, and working cows. He served as an excellent role model for young veterinarians by demonstrating the importance of work-life balance.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:00p.m. Thursday August 24, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

A memorial service for Dr. Beard will be held 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 25, 2023 at the College of Veterinary Medicine (BI auditorium).&nbsp;

Gregory (Greg) A. Hibberd, born December 3, 1950, to Oliver and Helen Hibberd in Chicago, IL. 

Greg graduated from St. Margaret of Scotland grade school on 1964, and Brother Rice High School in 1968. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Viet Nam 1969-1971. Greg married Mary (Lolly) Graber July 18, 1981. 

Greg was preceded in death by maternal and paternal grandparents; mother, Helen Hibberd; father, Oliver Hibberd; stepmother, Florence Hibberd and brother, Paul Hibberd. Greg preceded Lolly in death on July 23, 2023. 

He is survived by his brother, Michael (Linda) Hibberd; sister, Ruth (Kyle) Hibberd- Anderson; stepbrothers, Mike Gorman and John Gorman; stepsisters Barbara (Don) Allord and Mary Ellen (Paul) Adamowicz; siblings-in-laws; many beloved nieces, nephews, and many loving cousins, particularly Frank J. Dixon. Funeral Mass will be held for Greg and Lolly on August 3,2023, 11:00 a.m at St. Xavier Catholic Church; internment to follow at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery.

Gregory (Greg) A. Hibberd

Carl Arlen Larson, age 79 of Leonardville, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on July 3, 1944, in Manhattan, the son of Carl Oscar Emanuel and Clara Minnie (Layher) Larson.&nbsp; He graduated from Riley County High School with the class of 1963.

On September 19, 1965, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clay Center, he married Jane Frieda Scheele.&nbsp; She survives at the home.

Carl was a lifelong farmer and loved building mini tractors.&nbsp; He was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church where he served on the church council for several years, Riley County Young Farmers and Farm Wives, Riley County Farm Bureau where he served as President and International Harvester Collector’s Kansas Chapter #3.

In addition to his wife, Jane Larson, he is survived by one daughter, Cindy Olson and husband Victor, III of Leonardville; one son, Dale Larson and wife Lotta of Leonardville; one sister, Joyce Troyer and husband Daryl of Manhattan; one brother, Roy Larson and wife Debbie of Leonardville; four grandchildren, Brianna Kurkowski and husband Max, Garrett Olson, Adam Larson, and Cajsa Larson and husband Daniel Axenbrant, and three great grandchildren, Clara Kurkowski, Kinsley Kurkowski and Freya Larson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ralph Larson.

Robert Rockwell 82, of Abilene, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Salina Regional Health Center In Salina, KS. He was born in Cleveland Ohio. Robert was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served as a aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam Conflict. After his service in the Airforce Robert was an aircraft mechanic for Continental Air Lines. On Christmas Eve 1998 Robert married Helen Gabbard, He loved to make people laugh and could be counted on to liven up any conversation. Robert and Helen loved cats and provided homes to many over the years. Robert loved planes, trains, and cars, and had been a volunteer for the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. Robert is survived by his wife Helen of the home, His stepdaughter Judy Germann of Abilene daughter Angela Petersen and her husband Steve of Burkburnette, Texas and son Bobby and Wife Shelley Rockwell of Albuquerque, NM. Clifford L. Gibbs, 80, of Abilene passed away on July 29 at Enterprise Estates. He was born November 2, 1942 in Salina, Kansas to Laverne and Doris (McCormick) Gibbs. He grew up and attended school in Salina, graduating with the with Class of 1961. In high school he worked for Designs by Cunningham Flowers in Salina, and later attended the School of Design in Denver, Colorado.

In 1964 he married Anne Reck and moved to Abilene. Cliff and Anne had two children, Michelle and Jimmy, and later divorced in 1986. Cliff acted as a gunfighter in Old Abilene Town from 1969 to 1975 and enjoyed every minute of it. His other hobbies were camping, boating and fishing, and as his children and grandchildren always said he didn’t know a stranger.

He started working for the City of Abilene in August of 1969, first as a Street Laborer, Water Superintendent, Purchasing Agent, and then as Director of Public Works. He retired in 2008 after working for the city for 40 years.

In 1995 he and Janet Korn were married. For many years he served on the Sister City Board and enjoyed travelling many times to Japan, saying how much he enjoyed the kids and the many people he got to meet. After Cliff and Janet retired in 2008 they enjoyed spending their winters in Florida at a retirement community and spending many hours at Walt Disney World over the years.

Cliff is survived by his wife Janet; daughters Michelle (Kellan) Kopfer of Longford and Tami (Paul) Gaston of Abilene; sons Jimmy (Cameron) Gibbs of Kansas City, MO, and Terry (Charlotte) Swearingen of Abilene; grandchildren Dallas (Cody) Jenne, Dylon (Patty) Jenne, Kelby (Joe) Kopfer, Riley Kopfer, Blaine Gaston, Joel Gaston, and Finn Gibbs; greatgrandchildren Ava, Tucker, Tripp and Owen Jenne, Van Monroe and Avery Taylor; a brother Tim of Rogersville, TN, and an aunt Bonnie Bookless of Wichita. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents.

Clifford L. Gibbs

Isaac William “Bill” Anders, age 93, of Manhattan, Kansas, died July 27, 2023, at Meadowlark Hills - Bramlage House.

He was born December 2, 1929, in Winfield, Kansas, the son of Morrell and Julia (Robieson) Anders. Bill was preceded in death by two siblings, Maurice and Julia.

On January 5, 1963, at the First Congregational Church in Manhattan, Kansas, he was married to Janet Joyce Frey.

Survivors include his wife, Janet, of Manhattan, three sons: Greg Anders and his wife Heather of Niceville, FL, Doug Anders and his wife Rebecca of Ventura, CA and Matt Anders and his wife Martha of Manhattan Beach, CA, five grandchildren; Matthew, Phoebe, Maizie, Jake and Natasha, and one great-grandson, Isaac.

Bill attended Southwestern College, the University of Arizona, and graduated from the University of Kansas with his bachelors degree in physical education. He earned his masters degree from Emporia State University in mathematics.

He served on Active Duty in the United States Navy from August 1953 to August 1956. Bill continued in the Naval Reserve until retiring as Captain.

After release from active duty, he and his brother, Maurice, hopped onto a freighter bound for Australia and the 1956 Olympics. After a time touring and working in Australia, they traveled around the world and returned home the fall of 1957.

A teaching career and more education led him to a career of government service in California. He worked as a mathematician at the Navy Civil Engineering Laboratory in Port Hueneme, followed by teaching math at Oxnard Community College.

Bill was an active volunteer in the community and spent significant amounts of time supporting youth activities including local Boy Scout troops, the Port Hueneme Little League, and the Boys and Girls Club of Port Hueneme. In recognition of his contributions to the community, he was honored as the “Port Hueneme Citizen of the Year” in 1990.

Several years following his retirement, they moved to Placitas, NM. In Placitas, Bill was very active with the Bernalillo United Methodist Church and helped them to acquire an adjacent property so the church could have a parking lot and he served in the church leadership for many years. He was also active with the Placitas Trails Water Board, being instrumental in implementing a new arsenic filtering system for healthy tap water.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502, with Reverend Donna Voteau officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley.

The Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502, is assisting the family with arrangements.

David Allen Spiker, age 69, of Wamego, Kansas died Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan. He was a long-time resident of the Wamego community.

He was born in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Ivan Robert and Ruth Anne (Shear) Spiker. David grew up in Holton and attended Holton High School.

He was united in marriage to Denise DePaemelaere on May 18, 2002, in Wamego, Kansas. Together they shared four children, Tabitha, Nick, Michael, and Katherine.

David served his country in the Army for 3 years with additional military service in the Army National Guard for 19 years. He followed his selfless acts to the service of others in careers as an EMT, Deputy Sheriff, and volunteer positions for his community. He volunteered for more than a decade as assistant fire chief and five years as fire chief for District 7. Additionally, he joined his military comrades as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion organizations. His caring and compassionate nature was demonstrated through his time and compassion for helping others. He was also a skilled mechanic and worked on tanks at Fort Riley’s military base. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He enjoyed cooking, especially smoking ribs, grilling hamburgers, and trying new recipes. He loved to travel with his wife Denise to small towns to explore historical landmarks, museums and was a history buff for the Vietnam War.

David is survived by his wife, Denise Spiker, Wamego, KS; Daughter, Tabitha (Frank) LeSage, St. Mary’s, KS; Son, Nick (Valerie) Spiker, Wamego, KS; Blended children, Michael Van Leeuwen (Brittney) Spokane, WA; Katherine, or Gracie as only Dave called her, Van Leeuwen, Manhattan, KS; Sisters, Pat (Lowell) Fundom, Platte City, MO; and Elizabeth (Elias) Alvarez, Hurst, TX, and sixteen grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ivan and Ruth Anne Spiker, and his stepbrother, John Murphy.

Clinton Davies Jr., age 78, died July 27, 2023, in Wakefield, Kansas. He was born to Clinton Sr. and Marvis (Hess) Davies in Clay Center, Kansas on June 8, 1945. Clinton grew up in the Clay Center community. He was a 1964 graduate of Clay Center Community High School. Clinton married Verna McGee and had three children, Clinton III, Laura and Michelle. Clinton and Verna later divorced. Clinton joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served seven years. One of his proudest moments in the National Guard was serving as a communications Sergeant and working communications for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Funeral. Clinton worked for various grain elevators in the area, Clay Center Public Works at the power plant and for Hankemeier Ready Mix. He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Jerry Davies.

Clinton Davies Jr.

Russell P. Goss, Jr, (90) of Melbourne, Florida, beloved child of God, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to everyone he met, passed away at William Child’s Hospice House on July 25, 2023. There wasn’t a server, booth attendant, or volunteer that he didn’t learn the name of and thank personally upon parting. If you were lucky enough to know Russ, you liked Russ. Russ left this world just as he lived his life: with compassion, concern for others, and protecting the ones he loved. With a saved seat in Heaven, he rejoins his parents, brother, and sons, Kevin and Corey Goss. Russ grew up playing stickball in New Jersey and was recruited to the Brooklyn Dodgers Farm League out of highschool. Later, stationed in Kansas during the Korean War, he met the love of his life, Patricia Coup. Six months after meeting, the two were married. While attending Washburn University on a football scholarship, they welcomed the first three of five children. He later moved his family to Long Island, New York, and enjoyed a fulfilling career as an audio-engineer with Grumman Aerospace. Russ continued the tradition his father set before him, creating a slice of heaven on earth at his beloved Cotton Cove Cottages on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. He and Pat ran Cotton Cove Cottages for over 40 years, creating a magical place where generations of families made memories, forged bonds, and everyone fell in love with the genuinely good and kind man that was Russ. Russ and Pat retired in Melbourne, Florida where they continued their love story, calling her “Babe” and “My Girl” up until the end, enjoying 69 years of marriage at the time of his passing. Russ is preceded in death by his sons Kevin &amp; Corey Goss and survived by his wife, Patricia (Coup) Goss of FL, his children: Terry Goss of NH, Sheree (Goss) McDonald of NY, Scott Goss of AZ, Sendi (Hawk) Goss of GA; Grandchildren: Heather, Todd, Ryan, Brittney, Sean, Lynn, Chad, Kody, Shay, Jade; and great-grandchildren: Dylon, Breanna, Abigail, Kate, Mallory, Grayson, Brooke, Corey, and Ethan. Goss, Jr, (90) of Melbourne, Florida, beloved child of God, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to everyone he met, passed away at William Child’s Hospice House on July 25, 2023. There wasn’t a server, booth attendant, or volunteer that he didn’t learn the name of and thank personally upon parting. If you were lucky enough to know Russ, you liked Russ. Russ left this world just as he lived his life: with compassion, concern for others, and protecting the ones he loved. With a saved seat in Heaven, he rejoins his parents, brother, and sons, Kevin and Corey Goss. Russ grew up playing stickball in New Jersey and was recruited to the Brooklyn Dodgers Farm League out of highschool. Later, stationed in Kansas during the Korean War, he met the love of his life, Patricia Coup. Six months after meeting, the two were married. While attending Washburn University on a football scholarship, they welcomed the first three of five children. He later moved his family to Long Island, New York, and enjoyed a fulfilling career as an audio-engineer with Grumman Aerospace. Russ continued the tradition his father set before him, creating a slice of heaven on earth at his beloved Cotton Cove Cottages on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. He and Pat ran Cotton Cove Cottages for over 40 years, creating a magical place where generations of families made memories, forged bonds, and everyone fell in love with the genuinely good and kind man that was Russ. Russ and Pat retired in Melbourne, Florida where they continued their love story, calling her “Babe” and “My Girl” up until the end, enjoying 69 years of marriage at the time of his passing. Russ is preceded in death by his sons Kevin &amp; Corey Goss and survived by his wife, Patricia (Coup) Goss of FL, his children: Terry Goss of NH, Sheree (Goss) McDonald of NY, Scott Goss of AZ, Sendi (Hawk) Goss of GA; Grandchildren: Heather, Todd, Ryan, Brittney, Sean, Lynn, Chad, Kody, Shay, Jade; and great-grandchildren: Dylon, Breanna, Abigail, Kate, Mallory, Grayson, Brooke, Corey, and Ethan. Russell P. Goss, Jr.

Gerald (Gary) C. Markvicka, age 73, of Manhattan, died July 29, 2023 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on December 8, 1949 in Loup City, Nebraska, the son of Alfonso and Dorothy (Pray) Markvicka. He grew in the Loup City area and graduated from Loup City High School with the class of 1968.

After he graduated high school, Gary was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was proud to serve his country and made the Army his lifelong career in Military Intelligence, learning to speak three foreign languages. He served two tours of duty in Germany during the Cold War and later in Operation Desert Storm. Gary earned many awards for his service in the Army, including a Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. He retired with the rank of CW3 after over 20 years of service to his country.

On July 27, 1970, he was united in marriage to Judy Hurt. She survives him at their home in Manhattan.

In addition to his wife Judy, he is also survived by his children: Shannon Kirk (Tom), Corey Markvicka, and Ryan Markvicka; his granddaughters: Delaney Kirk, Dylan Kirk, Gracyn Markvicka and Kendall Markvicka; his siblings Peggy (Pat) Toscano, Jane (Gery) Bonczynski, Mary Kay (Alan) Hemmer, Max (Julie) Markvicka and Roy (Sandy) Markvicka. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene Larchick.

Graveside services for Gerald will be held on Thursday August 10, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road in Manhattan.

Amanda Luella "Betty" Arasmith, age 92, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

Betty was born on May 16, 1931, in Densmore, Kansas, the daughter of Wilbur E. and Martha G. (Davis) Arasmith. She grew up in the Densmore area and graduated from Lenora Kansas Rural High School in 1949.

After high school, Betty moved to Concordia, Kansas, where she attended and then graduated from the St. Joseph Nursing School in 1952. She dedicated over 40 years of her life to nursing and worked at what is now known as the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Betty's passion for her profession was evident in the care and compassion she provided to countless hospital patients over the years.

In addition to her many passions and accomplishments, Betty was known for her love of American cheese, Oreo cookies, and piping hot coffee. These simple pleasures brought her immense joy, and she delighted in savoring them during moments of relaxation.

Betty's life was a testament to her selflessness and caring nature. As a dedicated nurse, she devoted herself to the well-being of others, providing compassionate care to countless patients throughout her remarkable 40-year career. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her professional life, as she was a devoted mother and grandmother who always put her family first.

The cacophony of sounds that accompanied family gatherings brought her immense happiness. From the laughter of her grandchildren to the lively chatter among relatives, Betty cherished these moments of togetherness, finding solace in the warmth and love of her family.

Betty's legacy is one of love, compassion, and selflessness. Her presence in the lives of her family and friends will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be cherished as an inspiration to all who knew her.

Betty was preceded in death by her siblings: Robert, Hazel, Agnes, Riley, and her twin brother, William, affectionately known as "Billy."

She is survived by her sons: Chad Arasmith (Heather) of Manhattan, Kansas, and Andy Newbrey (Michelle) of Towanda, Kansas, along with her grandchildren: Raven Wilson (Parker) of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Kyra Arasmith, Kael Arasmith, and Sawyer Arasmith, all of Manhattan.

A memorial service in honor of Betty will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, with Rev. Melanie Nord officiating. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Lolly graduated from St. Cajetan grade school, Chicago, in 1965, Academy of Our Lady High School, Chicago, in 1969, College of St. Francis, Joliet, IL, in 1973, and Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1975. She worked as a speech pathologist until her retirement. Lolly married Gregory A. Hibberd on July 18, 1981, in Chicago, IL. Lolly was preceded in death by her father Jerome F. Graber, sister Susan A. Graber, lifelong best friend Ann Mabbott Jones, and beloved husband Gregory A. Hibberd. Lolly is survived by her mother Mary E. Graber, sister Karen (Edward) Raftery, brother Jerome (Nancy) F. Graber, Jr, brother Gerald (Marlene) Graber, brother James (Loretta) Graber, sister Lisa Graber, sister Lynne (the late Robert) McGreal, and sister Elizabeth (Daniel) Devane, many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. A graveside service with full military honors and last call will take place 10 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home.

Jim served in the United States Army from 1956 until his retirement in 1986. During his thirty years of service, he served three tours in Korea, two tours in both Vietnam and Germany, and a total of nine years at Fort Riley with the 1st Infantry Division. Following his retirement from military service, Jim continued his career as a civil servant for seventeen years at Fort Riley. He was an active member of the South Junction City Kiwanis Club since 1986 and served as the President, Lt. Governor, and Master Instructor of the Kansas Kiwanis District. Jim was a volunteer member of the Geary County Rural Fire Department for over twenty three years.

He was also a member of the following organizations: Fort Riley Retirement Council, Kansas Armed Forces E-9 Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) where served as past president, life member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion Post #45 in Junction City, Kansas. On October 2, 1990, he married Wally Gob in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Wally, of Junction City, Kansas; daughter, Kelly Mitchell of Copperas Cove, Texas; son, Patrick Miramontez and his wife Jane of Lenexa, Kansas; son, Mario Miramontez of Chapman, Kansas; six granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son James B. Mitchell, Jr.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CSM (retired) James B.  (Jim) Mitchell, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 as the result of a lawnmower accident. 

 Jim was a 23 plus year active volunteer with the Geary County Rural Fire Station and was assigned to Station 10 that covered the west side of Milford lake to include Laurel Canyon. 

 Jim, in addition to responding on fire calls, took pride and joy in making sure that Station 10 was clean and that Truck 110 was ready to respond on fire calls.

He was proud when earlier this month, there was an Open House at the new Station 10 and he was able to help show the station and the fire units off.

Visitation will be held on Thursday August 3rd from 5-7pm at the  Johnson Funeral Home located at 203 N. Washington in Junction City. 

 Graveside services along with the Last Call will be on Friday August 4th at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery located east of Ogden, Kansas at 10.00.

Friends of Geary County Rural Fire is one of the organizations for memorials.

CSM(Ret) James B 'Jim' Mitchell

Jo Ann Royer passed away in her beloved Abilene, Kansas on July 25,2023. She was born January 1, 1940, in Elmira, New York, the third daughter of Lawrence and Helen (Ruff) Wilson. Jo attended the Horseheads, New York school system where she developed many close lifetime friendships with her classmates. She was a gifted singer and was invited soloist at many events. Always active, she was a high school cheerleader and frequent visitor, often with friends, to the family lakeside cottage at Watkins Glen, New York. After high school, Jo attended college, then chose to become a licensed cosmetologist and start raising a family. She became the proud mother of Kevin and Stacy and, early in their lives, relocated to Vine Street in Abilene. Her working years, in Abilene, saw her affiliated with the Etherington family real estate business, with both sales and office management duties, until her retirement from the work force. Jo also worked to create a home on Vine Street that was welcoming to those beyond her family. Friends and neighbors frequently visited to enjoy her hospitality, her cooking and baking, and her company. Her gardening skills provided a plant-filled backyard for both conversation and consumption. She also played host and caretaker to an uncounted number of cats who happened to find their way to her yard. Many of them chose to stay for years to enjoy her brushings, feedings and her loving companionship. Jo greeted thousands of costumed trick-or-treaters over the years as she passed out Twinkies, as part of her Vine Street tradition on Halloween night. In 1975 she and Robert H "Hank" Royer Jr. were married as he returned to Abilene with his newly minted law license. They had enjoyed a long dating relationship, but as a motivator, she declined to get married until he finished both college and law school and retired from his Topeka Police Department employment. Together they moved into their lifetime family home on Vine Street, with Kevin and Stacy. Providing for and helping both Kevin and Stacy grow to their potential then became her major focus. As finances permitted Jo ensured that each child had many growth and travel experiences. As Kevin and Stacy "left the nest" and began their college and life experiences, Jo and Hank continued to immerse themselves, usually as a team, in both local and distant activities. Travels took them to 48 states and more than 20 different countries, but Abilene was always her favorite place. Jo always worked to make life better for others. She spent decades as a member and officer of St John's Episcopal Church, in Abilene. She was an organizing member and 39-year volunteer and officer of the Abilene Hospice organization (now known as Hospice of Dickinson County). In 2004,the American Red Cross awarded her the "Clara Barton Humanitarian Award" in recognition of her many outreach achievements. In 2019, Jo contracted multiple lung infections. Lengthy antibiotic treatment controlled the infections, but her lung damage was permanent, and she required oxygen assistance for the balance of her life. This impediment only slowed her down a little bit, but did take additional international travel off the table. Family was always Jo's main love. Son, Kevin Dilmore, being based in Kansas City, with Hallmark, the past many years has allowed opportunities for regular get togethers. When Kevin's daughter, Colleen Rodriguez, and husband Guillermo, chose to move to Abilene in 2017 to both start their family and initiate their teaching careers, she was thrilled. As great-grandsons Lorenzo and Oliver joined their family, Jo was excited to be involved with their activities. Daughter, Stacy Royer Hoyt, and husband Adam,were first based in Arizona and then Overland Park, Kansas, before employment required their relocation, with grandson, Wilson McArthur Royer Hoyt to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2011. Wherever they lived Jo was always excited to travel and visit with them. She tried to attend many of Wilson's prep school activities in Tulsa. With his TCU college degree in hand, Wilson is now attending the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in Oklahoma City. Jo was predeceased by her parents, sister Margaret and husband Jack Withiam and sister Anna Mae and husband Carl Gunshaw. She is survived by husband, Hank Royer, son Kevin Dilmore, daughter Stacy Royer Hoyt (Adam), grandaughter Colleen Rodriguez (Guillermo), grandson Wilson McArthur Royer Hoyt, great grandsons Lorenzo and Oliver Rodriguez, nephews Jim Withiam (Bev) and Jack Withiam Jr ( Lynda), and nieces Roberta Medema (Lee), Karen Tomkins (Ivan) and Carol Scott (Jim), and their families. Jo attended the Horseheads, New York school system where she developed many close lifetime friendships with her classmates. She was a gifted singer and was invited soloist at many events. Always active, she was a high school cheerleader and frequent visitor, often with friends, to the family lakeside cottage at Watkins Glen, New York. After high school, Jo attended college, then chose to become a licensed cosmetologist and start raising a family. Ethel Darlene (Jackson) Kahle, 88, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away at her home on Friday, July 21, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born to Pearl and Laura Jackson on November 19, 1934, in Emporia, Kansas area.&nbsp; Ethel graduated from Eskridge High School in 1952. Ethel and her family moved to Alta Vista, Kansas, after Red left the Army. She was a devoted farm wife and mother until moving to Manhattan in 1977. For the rest of her working years before retirement, she was the best lunch lady in the land for USD 383 at several schools, including Manhattan High School, where her grandchildren were fortunate enough to be fed and loved by her during their high school years. &nbsp; Ethel was married to Ivor (Red) Lee Kahle on December 30, 1951. He survives of the home. Other survivors include her daughter Phyllis (Kim) Padgett of Manhattan, Larry (Helen) Kahle of Manhattan, his Grandchildren, Stephanie (Brian) Kabriel, Ryan Padgett, Kendra Cowell, Chase (Corinne) Kahle, Chance, and Ashton Kahle, her Great Grandchildren Kaylee Kabriel, Maci Cowell, and Leon Kahle and a brother, Joe (Julia) Jackson, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ethel was predeceased by her parents, Pearl and Laura Jackson, an infant brother; her sister, Bonnie Cook; and her son, Scott Kahle. We take comfort in knowing that they were at the gates of Heaven awaiting her arrival. Ethel was a loving and caring friend, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was always on the move, sometimes a little stubborn, and not afraid to speak her mind. Ethel and Red loved traveling together and traveled with both their friends, children, and grandchildren across the United States. Sharing new places and life experiences with their family and friends was something they enjoyed doing together. Dining out and enjoying a good buffet couldn’t be beaten either—especially in the days of Sirloin Stockade or the recent days of Golden Corral. Fond memories include her cooking great family meals, playing card games and Dominoes with as many people as she could gather around the table, and finding the best garage sales on Saturday morning. Ralph Leggs beloved husband, son, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS. Born on August 16, 1931, in Clearfield, PA, Ralph led a remarkable life filled with bravery, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his country and family. At the age of 18, Ralph joined the U.S. Army, embarking on a journey that would define the course of his life. He valiantly fought in both the Korean War and the Vietnam Wars, demonstrating his courage and resilience on the battlefield. Early in his military career, he served in the 2nd Ranger Company, attached to the 7th Infantry Division, which was the first and only volunteer, segregated, black Airborne Ranger unit commanded by black officers, which served with distinction in the Korean War from 6 October 1950 until 1 August 1951. Throughout his military career, Ralph's dedication and service to his country earned him numerous accolades, including the Purple Heart, the Unsung Hero Award and the Quilt of Valor, symbolizing his bravery and sacrifices. After retiring from the Army at Fort Riley in 1969, Ralph continued his service to the nation by working for the Federal Civil Service for an additional two decades. Ralph's love for his family was immeasurable. He will be deeply missed by his children: Annette Leggs Maggio and her husband Joe Maggio, Michael Leggs and his wife Joy Nisell, Mitchell Leggs and his wife Safak Paker-Leggs, Daniel Leggs, and his wife Sang Leggs. Ralph's legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Eva Leggs, Isaac Throckmorton Leggs, Julian Throckmorton Leggs, Jayden Leggs, and Jayson Leggs. Ralph is survived by his wife, Chong Leggs whose love and devotion remained a steady force, providing him with strength, comfort, and peace during his final days. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joung Sun Chay, his mother Frances Lyda, and his father Ralph Leggs Sr. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Jonathan Leggs, William Leggs, and Charles Leggs; and three sisters, Shirley Davenport, Willa Mae Keith Scoggins, Anna E. Jones. His memories and spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends. Chaplain Linda Lewis will officiate. Cremation has taken place. He was born on October 30, 1939, Junction City, Kansas to Otto and Lelia Mae (Benning) Wunder. He joined the Navy January 16, 1958 and retired April 1, 1977 in San Diego, CA and made his life there. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Larry Langvardt of Junction City, KS and his sister-in-law, Eldora Wunder of Vermillion, SD; his nieces and nephews, Lori (Mike) Charland of Fort Worth, TX, Amy (Jason) Rathbone of Weaverville, NC, Brenda (Les) Isom of Manhattan, KS, Roger Sheaffer and Kenny Sheaffer, Tim (Kathy) Wunder, niece-in-law, Barb Wunder all of Junction City, KS, Terry (Lisa) Wunder of Girard, KS, Tony (Sarah) Wunder of Vermillion, KS and many great nieces and nephews. A graveside with full military honors will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. On July 12th the good Lord decided you needed to rest, so he called you home. As for your family we are very saddened by this, but you are up in Heaven resting. Mac, Grampa Mac as he was called, was born on March 1st 1943. His parents were Janette K. and George J. McNamara. He married Aurie and they later divorced. They had two sons, Carl and Patrick. In 1986 he married Miss Jo, as she was known to all in Milford. They had a small farm and enjoyed raising beef cattle together along with taking care of many acres of land , raking, baling hay and going to the sale barn together. He is survived by his two sons, Carl (Kristine) and Patrick both of Colorado, his two grandchildren from Carl and Kristine, Dylan and Peyton. He is also survived by the kids he gained in his marriage to Miss Jo - Sandra (Wayne) Tamashiro, Sheila (Jim) Hanson, Yvonne (Andrew) Snider, Robert (Mynda) Peters, Kelly Peters. As well as grandchildren Travis Tamashiro, Brenda (Emar) Diggs, Scott (Megan) Diggs, Timothy (Leann) Diggs, Justin (Desiree) Diggs, Matthew (Sara) Peters, Rebecca Peters, Lauren Peters, Emma Iacovella, Jacob (Liz) Snider, Jared (Izzy) Snider, Garrett (Tara) DeVoe, Chivaughnne (Charlie) Zorc. He also has many great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Josephine in November 2019 as well as his mother and father. We will be forever grateful for Ian and Dennis for always being there to help out to do whatever needed to be done, like putting up the hay, etc., getting cows back home, sometimes unbeknown to Mac. Just everyday stuff especially during Covid. He would tell you like it was. He didn’t sugarcoat anything. Mac, it’s your time to put the cowboy boots up and rest. Theodore Louis “Buzz” Bissonnette, 77, formerly of Junction City, KS passed away on July 22, 2023, in Topeka, KS. He is now with his first love Theresa. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions have been designated to the <a href="https://vva.org/">Vietnam Veterans Memorial</a>. Buzz was born March 1, 1946, in Hillsboro, New Hampshire to Theodore and Viola (Lavine) Bissonnette. He joined the U S Army in 1963, which brought him to Junction City where he met his first wife, Theresa. He was very proud of being a Vietnam veteran, he served his country for 5 years. He enjoyed fishing, CB radio, traveling, nightly rides, playing pool and playing games with his children, grandchildren, and family. Buzz is survived by his wife, Eileen of Topeka, KS, daughter, Missy (Amy) Bissonnette of Wichita, KS son, Joseph (Jacque) Bissonnette of Junction City, KS, son, Beau (Whitney) Bissonnette of Sharon, SC, daughter, Tieha (Danelle) Bissonnette of Junction City, KS; nine grandchildren, Desirae, Theresa, Jordyn, Dalana, Bryce, Liam, Bonnie, Sydney, and Landen. He is also survived by his puppy Frank.
