Maurine Hebrank passed away November 6,2023 at Stormont Vail Health Center in Topeka KS.
She was born April 4, 1935 during a Great Plains dust storm in Quinter, Kansas to Manford and Vera (Bailey) Ulrich. She had an active childhood with her friends and with her many cousins, with whom she remained especially close throughout her life.
Maurine attended school in Quinter, graduating from Quinter High School in 1953. She attended Kansas State College and Kansas University Medical Center, receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse in December, 1957. Maurine met Kenneth Eugene Hebrank on a blind date while at KSU. They were married December 29, 1956 at the Abilene Methodist Church in Abilene, Kansas, on an unseasonably beautiful, springlike day. They made their home in many places as they followed Ken's army career, which stirred an interest in for travel in them both. When Ken retired in 1975, they made their permanent home in Manhattan, Kansas. Maurine took on a position as a school nurse with USD 383, Manhattan-Ogden, where she met many people who would become her closest and dearest friends. She was a dedicated caregiver, and was a volunteer for the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice for over 30 years.
Maurine was an avid sports fan, following the KSU Wildcats, the KU Jayhawks, and the Kansas City sports teams. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge, RV camping, and quiet time for reading. Maurine also had a witty, fun sense of humor, and gatherings with friends were always lively. She was a member of the DAR and the Manhattan Review Club. Church activities were very important to her, and she was a member of the Ogden Friendship House United Methodist Church. Maurine spent countless hours giving time and energy enthusiastically serving as a volunteer at the Friendship House of Hope.
Maurine and Kenneth were blessed with two children, Karen Ann, in 1962, and Philip Eugene, in 1966. She cherished her husband, children, and her grandson and his family, and being part of their lives. An everlasting joy was watching her great grand-daughter Ellie grow and thrive.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents Manford and Vera, her brothers Leroy Ulrich and Royer Ulrich, and sisters-in-law Marilyn Ulrich and Mary Stiver.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Buhler (Bruce), Manhattan, Kansas, son Philip, Manhattan, Kansas, grandson Brandon Schmitter, his wife Nicole and great grand-daughter Ellie Rose, Basehor, Kansas.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., November 18, 2023 at the Ogden Friendship House United Methodist Church, Ogden, Kansas. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. November 20, at the Greenwood Cemetery in Council Grove, Kansas.
