DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Saturday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Freightliner semi driven by Darryl William&nbsp;Marchand, 52, Hazel Park, Michigan, was eastbound on Interstate 70 approximately 2 miles west of Fair Road. The vehicle veered off the roadway to the right, entered the south ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Marchand to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D., a member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, issued the following statement after the Chairwoman, Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), released the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agriculture.senate.gov/newsroom/dem/press/release/chairwoman-stabenow-unveils-the-rural-prosperity-and-food-security-act" target="_blank">Democrats' Farm Bill framework</a>&nbsp;unexpectedly without Republicans input.

“Putting pen to paper on the Farm Bill is long overdue and is welcomed by our farmers and ranchers as the next step in negotiations. As you might expect, the proposal, in its current form, largely reflects the Democrat priorities of more spending in the nutrition title and the addition of many new climate change provisions. Unfortunately, it doesn't put the ‘Farm’ back in the Farm Bill and falls short on the crop insurance and commodity reference price needs of the farmer,"&nbsp;Senator Marshall said.&nbsp;

"We generally support nutrition programs, but they have grown from $60B a year under the last Farm Bill to a staggering $180B yearly, with minimal accountability. On the other hand, while farmers have seen exploding input costs, high-interest rates, and a record drop in farm income, it appears my colleagues across the aisle still did not include a modest $400M a year request to help the farmer."

WAMEGO - A new MRI suite is now open at the Wamego Health Center, thanks to a partnership with the City of Wamego.

Wamego Health Center renovations allowed the addition of a new, state-of-the-art MRI scanner to the facility.

Residents in and around Wamego will benefit from the partnership between the City and the Health Center, especially when rural hospitals across the state are closing.

“It’s unique in that the city continues to own the building and the land, and the hospital in Manhattan runs the operation,” says Brian Howells, hospital administrator. “It’s just been a terrific joint venture, a wonderful partnership, that I don’t think either entity could have done on their own.”

The Wamego Hospital Foundation, along with generous community contributions, funded the new scanner, which replaces the old, mobile MRI unit that brought services to Wamego Health Center only twice a week.

The new MRI suite is permanently housed within the Wamego Health Center building, bringing head-to-toe imaging five days a week.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating another fentanyl related death and have made an arrest.

On Thursday, officers with the Riley County Police Department secured the arrest of Luke Patrick Johnson,21, of Manhattan, in cooperation with the Pottawattamie County Sherriff’s Office, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

Johnson was located in Pottawattamie County and taken into custody on the Riley County District Court warrant by the Pottawattamie County Sherriff’s Office.&nbsp;

Johnson was arrested on four separate warrants. The requested charges include distribution of a controlled substance causing death, aggravated battery, distribution of opiate/opium/ narcotic/ stimulant/ heroin dosage &lt;10 units x2, use of a communication facility, distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm and aggravated endangering a child.

Johnson’s charges are linked to the death of an 18-year-old female in May of 2023. &nbsp;Other charges stem from 2022 and 2023 cases involving controlled substances which resulted in bodily harm and an aggravated battery incident which occurred in Aggieville in late 2022.

Johnson is being held in Riley County on a bond of $1,575,000.&nbsp;

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) has scheduled two public hearings in June to give Kansas Gas Service customers an opportunity to learn more about the company’s recent rate increase request, ask questions and to make comments before the Commission.

On March 1, 2024, Kansas Gas Service filed an application with the Kansas Corporation Commission requesting a net rate increase in base rates of $58.1 million. The requested increase would affect the portions of a customer’s bill that relate to the delivery of natural gas by KGS, including the fixed monthly service charge and delivery charge. 

If approved, the average monthly residential bill will increase by approximately $6.71 (10.41%) for customers who use less natural gas (73 Mcf or less per year) and $9.48 (8.25%) for those that use more natural gas (more than 73 Mcf per year).

Kansas Gas Service provides natural gas service to approximately 648,000 homes and businesses in 360 communities in Kansas.

According to&nbsp;Becky Ryan, Pottawatomie County Public Information Officer, 58-year-old Ann Miller died from injuries in the tornado.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, an EF3 tornado struck the Pottawatomie County community of Westmoreland with wind gusts of 140mph, according to a preliminary damage survey by the National Weather Service in Topeka.

&nbsp;Miller was a long term county resident and a county health department employee.

Meanwhile, the American Red Cross is establishing a Resource Center in Westmoreland to aid residents impacted by the tornado.

The Resource Center will serve both direct victims and those indirectly affected, including families. It will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5 at the Methodist Church, located at 109 Main Street in Westmoreland. 

Agencies will be located in the education building immediately south of the church.Visitors to the Resource Center will have access to a wide range of services from various agencies, including but not limited to:• Pawnee Mental Health• American Red Cross• Pottawatomie County Appraiser’s Office• Pottawatomie County Health Department• AT&amp;T• The Salvation ArmyResidents affected by the disaster are encouraged to take advantage of the support available at the Resource Center, and community members are urged to spread the word about this important resource.

Officials ID woman who died in Westmoreland tornado

RILEY COUNTY - Starting Friday, May 3rd, Kansas Department of Transportation plans to start Phase 3 of the K-18/K177 pavement improvement project.

Phase 3 of the project will have traffic traveling head-to-head in the southbound/eastbound lanes while crews reconstruct the northbound/westbound lanes.

Work will be done in subphases, to keep traffic flow.&nbsp;

This Phase is expected to take until July to complete, weather-permitting and provided traffic follows the marked routes through the area and avoids the newly poured roadway.

Turning restrictions at the intersections of McDowell Creek Road, Stadel Road, Zeandale Road, Pride Drive, Johnson Road and Acorn Lane will remain in place.

RCPD: Suspect threw large rock through business window

K-State horticulture expert shares management tips for homeowners whose trees were damaged by recent storms.

Recent storms across the Midwest left many homeowners with damaged trees from heavy wind&nbsp;and rain. Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini shares tips to manage storm-damaged trees:

Not all trees should be salvaged.&nbsp;Trees with bark that has split and exposed the cambium or those where the main trunk has split are not likely to survive.

“Trees with so many broken limbs that the structure is altered may best be replaced,” Domenghini said. “Though these trees may produce new growth, they are under such extreme stress they are much more susceptible to diseases/pests and can be dangerous due to increased risk for further breaks.”

Prune broken branches to the next large branch or the trunk. Domenghini cautions against cutting branches flush with the trunk, cut to the collar area where the branch attaches to the trunk.

“Cutting flush to the trunk creates a larger wound that takes longer to heal,” Domenghini said.

Cut back large limbs progressively.&nbsp;The first cut should be made on the underside of the branch about 15 inches away from the trunk. Cut about one-third of the way through the limb.

The second cut should be made on top of the branch but about two inches further away from the trunk, creating an angle when joined with the first cut. This will cause the branch to break away.

The third cut should be made at the collar to remove the resulting stub.

Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. The tornado was on the ground for eight minutes, traveled 2.58 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards.

One person died in the storm and three were injured. The tornado also destroyed 22 homes, three RVs and five outbuildings and damaged another 13 homes and one commercial building.

Residents have been asked to place debris near the roadside for city, county and volunteer teams to collect and haul away.

Volunteer assistance is appreciated, however, no heavy equipment is needed. Volunteers must register at the Law Enforcement Center, 108 N 1st Street.&nbsp;

There are more than 175 volunteers already assisting with clean-up of debris in Westmoreland.

The American Red Cross is operating a day time safe and secure space at the Westmoreland Community Center. Those impacted by the tornado can request additional assistance by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS(1-800-733-2777).

Westmoreland Mayor, Mark Jack, expressed gratitude to emergency responders, Kansas Gas, Evergy, The American Red Cross, and volunteers for their swift response and ongoing support during this challenging time for the community.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.&nbsp;Just after 7p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report of theft in the 1200 block of Moro Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.A 29-year-old woman reported contents of her purse were taken when she was not looking by an unknown subject.&nbsp; The incident is said to have occurred in the early morning hours of April 28.&nbsp;Total estimated loss is $1,155. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Pottawatomie County offices will remain closed Wednesday

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—One person has died from injuries in the Tuesday afternoon tornado in Pottawatomie County, according to County Spokesperson Becky Ryan.

In addition to the fatality, three others were treated for injuries.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, a tornado struck Westmoreland, according to a statement from the county.

 At this time, there are reports of damage to multiple structures in the city. Officials did reopen Highway 99 to traffic.

Multiple first responders have arrived in Westmoreland to conduct grid searches to catalog damage and search for more people that may have been injured.&nbsp; Officials ask the general public to please keep away from the area at this time.

At 8p.m., a temporary shelter opened at Rock Creek High School, 9355 Flush Road, for those displaced due to the the tornado.

One confirmed death in Pottawatomie County tornado

MANHATTAN - On Saturday, May 4th, the Flint Hills Discovery Center will host its annual Flint Hills Festival from 10am to 5pm on Blue Earth Plaza.

Activities for children and adults of all ages, including live entertainment, community group booths, venders, maker demonstrations, and a wine &amp; beer tasting tent, along with a Taste of Kansas fair are available to explore.

Visit Manhattan, and the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation have provided funding to allow the event to be free to attend, as well as all exhibits within the Flint Hills Discovery Center.

This weekend also marks the last chance to explore Thomas Edison's Secret Lab traveling exhibit.

Move MHK! Comprehensive Parks and Rec Master Plan to be presented to City Commission

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) –&nbsp;a&nbsp;member of the Senate&nbsp;Committee on&nbsp;Commerce – Tuesday joined his colleagues in co-sponsoring the&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, according to a statement from Moran's office.

This legislation would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in new vehicles at no additional charge. Similar legislation has been introduced in the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;House&nbsp;of Representatives.&nbsp;

“AM radios connect rural communities with news, sports, weather and&nbsp;much more,”&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;“In parts of the country with limited connectivity, AM radios are often the only means to notify residents of tornadoes, snow storms and other dangerous weather. This legislation will help make certain new vehicles are&nbsp;equipped with an AM radio,&nbsp;so that folks in every corner of the country can stay connected to broadcasting and local updates during emergencies.”

This legislation was introduced by Sens. A motorcycle struck a deer in the 7000 block of Stockdale Park Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

EMS transported the male driver and female passenger to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

MANHATTAN - Early on Sunday, April 28th, Riley County Police Officers patrolling Aggieville in the 1100 block of Moro Street heard a gunshot near where they were patrolling.

Just before 2:00 am, officers entered the walkway between 1101 and 1109 Moro Street, where they saw two vehicles leaving the area.

One vehicle drove speedily away from the area, while the other driver was quickly stopped without incident by RCPD officers.

Officers located a shell casing and quickly established a crime scene.&nbsp;

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, however, RCPD says there are no indications that the community as a whole has been targeted by this incident.&nbsp;
