MANHATTAN -&nbsp;&nbsp;The Kansas State University Concrete Canoe team took first place at its regional competition at the Mid-America Student Symposium hosted by Missouri University of Science and Technology in April.

The win at the regional event for the American Society of Civil Engineers, or ASCE, gives the K-State team the opportunity to compete at the national competition held on the campus of Brigham Young University from June 20-22. This will be the team's second trip to the national competition in the last three years.

The event challenges participants to create a functioning canoe made of concrete. The process includes designing a hull, performing structural analysis and designing a concrete mixture that satisfies the strength requirements found in the structural analysis. Teams are judged for their final product, design paper, oral presentation and race results. Races include men's and women's sprints and endurance races.

"The objective of the competition is to 'win the bid' to manufacture 100 concrete canoes for the client, in this case, ASCE," said Cody Meyer, team president. "The canoe must meet all the criteria set forward in the 'request for proposals,' which is essentially the project specs."

This year's team changed up its design, opting to pour the canoe in segments that required multiple pours. The resulting canoe segments were then pieced together by pulling steel cables through the segments, putting tension on the cables and then anchoring the cables to the canoe. The team then put the tension force into the canoe segments and pulled them tightly together, and the finished canoe was named Connected.

"The team this year dedicated many hours to making a successful canoe," said Cody Meyer, team president. "They worked incredibly hard to make 'Connected' a reality, and their success is well deserved."

K-State Concrete Canoe team wins regional competition, advances to nationals

FORT RILEY —Two soldiers are recovering from injuries in a helicopter crash that occurred on Tuesday at Fort Riley, according to Fort Riley Public Affairs Officer, LTC Jefferson Grimes.

The incident involved a Boeing AH-64 took place during Combat Aviation Brigade’s gunnery training.

The injured crew members are receiving the necessary medical treatment, according to Grimes.&nbsp; Their names have not been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, an Infinity passenger vehicle driven by 72-year-old <a href="https://cityofmhk.com/1703/Mayor-Wynn-Butler">Winfried Butler,</a> of Manhattan, struck Candlewood Liquor&nbsp;in the 3200 block of Kimball Avenue.

&nbsp;The total estimated loss in this matter is over $1,000. Butler was arrested and cited for driving under the influence.&nbsp; He met the requirement of a $750 bond and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After his arrest Butler resigned, according to a statement from fellow city commissioner Peter Oppelt.&nbsp; Mayor Pro Tem Susan Adamchak will now take over as mayor.

Butler was first elected to the Manhattan City Commission in April 2011, according to the city web site. He served as Mayor in 2014-2015 and 2021. He was re-elected to the Commission in 2021 for a four-year term.

Stripe rust on the upper leaves or flag leaf are of particular concern.&nbsp;

In south and south-central Kansas, the wheat crop has progressed past the optimal window for a fungicide application. According to K-State, the risk of yield loss from stripe rust decreases when the disease is spotted in fields already in the dough stages of grain development.&nbsp;In northwest and north-central Kansas,&nbsp;however, the crop is further behind and more vulnerable.&nbsp;

In addition to limiting yield, Onofre noted that K-State research has seen a three to nine percent decrease in test weight in susceptible varieties under high stripe rust disease pressure, varying between wheat varieties and environments. This impact is&nbsp;important&nbsp;for end-use quality as test weight provides an initial&nbsp;indicator of quality&nbsp;and works as a rough estimate of potential flour yield.&nbsp;

While detrimental to yield and quality, producers can effectively treat stripe rust with foliar fungicides,&nbsp;particularly&nbsp;if applied at earlier growth stages. According to the eUpdate, “K-State research demonstrates that if stripe rust&nbsp;is detected&nbsp;on flag leaves at the heading growth stage, there is a 90% chance your fungicide application will pay off.&nbsp;This&nbsp;is a year when scouting will be critical.”&nbsp;

Wheat Scoop: K-State recommends scouting and addressing stripe rust

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann talked to Hutch Post Wednesday afternoon after he spoke Wednesday morning about the Farm Bill on the House Floor again and he really does see movement now.

"It's been very frustrating," Mann said. "I went to the floor for the 27th time, calling on Congress to pass a five-year Farm Bill. It's been delayed. It's been very frustrating, but, what's going to happen is, on the House side, the text has been drafted, it's going to be released here in the next few days. Later this month, we'll have a markup at committee, which means that committee will go through it, we'll consider it, we'll vote on it, vote on the amendments that come up and then pass it on to the House floor. "It's important that we get a fiscally responsible Farm Bill," Mann said. "Within that, top priorities for me are crop insurance, trade and research, as well as oversight. Specifically, on crop insurance, and we've talked about this over the last few months, crop insurance is such an important risk management tool for our ag producers and a very successful public private partnership. There will be efforts to weaken, diminish, chip away at crop insurance. I think we need to be strengthening it, fortifying it and making it better. That will be a big priority, also, on trade, when you talk about a fiscally responsible Farm Bill, if you look at the dollars, as a nation, that we spend, in promoting trade and opening up other markets overseas, it's an incredibly high return on that investment. That warrants further investment to make sure that we have robust international markets for ag products, those are going to be big focuses for me at the markup here in a couple weeks."

The extension of the current Farm Bill expires Sept. 30.

MANHATTAN - On Wednesday, Kansas State University announced the pledge of $1 million from ADM, a global leader in human and animal nutrition to&nbsp;Kansas State University’s Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation.

Kansas State University’s Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation includes one of four new or renovated facilities in the University's College of Agriculture's Agriculture Innovation Initiative.

K-State students will experience elevated academic experiences, find support in food product development, food safety and security, and continue sparking innovation within the industry with the help of this investment by ADM.

“I want to thank ADM for its investment in our Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation,” said Ernie Minton, Eldon Gideon Dean for the College of Agriculture and Director of K-State Research and Extension. “The College of Agriculture is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 higher education ag programs in the nation, and this donation will help ensure we remain at the top in educating students, leading in research and helping our partners feed a hungry world.” &nbsp;

Within the Global Center, thirty percent will be dedicated to on-site collaboration between private enterprises and public resources with state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms and interdisciplinary partner spaces.

“ADM is excited to support the development of the Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation at Kansas State University. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations.

Just before 10a.m. Tuesday, police arrested 20-year-old Ladaisha Ransom of Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Ransom was arrested on probable cause offenses of criminal possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault. 

Ransom remains jailed on a $30,000 bond.&nbsp; On May 1, Ransom was jailed for an alleged probation violation.&nbsp; 

In 2019, Ransom was among two teens accused of making felony criminal threats on social media. 

At the time, the RCPD&nbsp; reported the teens made threatening messages on Snapchat and appeared to have a gun. A citizen tipped police to the post which reportedly was aimed at two other teens. All four were students at the Manhattan High West Campus.

“Transforming barns through the BARN program will preserve historical structures and repurpose them into vibrant hubs for agritourism activities, all while bringing new life and economic opportunities into Kansas communities,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “By revitalizing these iconic buildings, we are honoring our state’s agricultural roots and planting seeds for future businesses to grow and prosper.”

The BARN grant program is designed to spur economic growth and help create memorable visitor experiences by preserving a significant aspect of Kansas’ architectural history. These grants are specifically designed to rescue iconic barns from likely demolition or collapse and rehabilitate them into spaces conducive for new or expanding agritourism businesses.

“The type of project we are looking for are those that have the potential to bring new visitors to Kansas,”&nbsp;Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe said. “Agritourism is an effective way to celebrate our state’s agricultural tradition while providing unforgettable travel experiences to our visitors.”

Kansas Tourism announces Barn Adaptation and Restoration Needs(BARN) grant program

MANHATTAN - The Flint Hills Discovery Center's director, Susan Adams, has announced her retirement, following 12 years with the FHDC.&nbsp;

Adams will officially retire on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Director of the Flint Hills Discovery Center.” Adams said, adding, “Over the years, I have seen the way this community and region have embraced the Discovery Center as a success story. I look forward to seeing its continued growth and expansion.”

Adams started as Director of the FHDC in 2016, prior to her appointment as director, she worked as the Guest Services Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and Interim Director.&nbsp;

During her time as director, Adams, the Discovery Center has continued to have growth in attendance and membership and has an annual economic impact on the Manhattan community of $3.2 million.

“Twelve years ago, this region discovered this new venue for learning and celebrating the unique ecosystem of Kansas' tall grass prairie (the largest in the world). We learned that a huge global audience, generally unaware of this natural history and beauty, would start their awareness through the Flint Hills Discovery Center’s incredible displays, learning centers, and Immersive Theater.” noted Jack Lindquist, President of the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation, “The volunteer board members of the Foundation are beyond proud of the success of Director Susan Adams and her steadfast dedication to enhance and improve the Flint Hills Discovery Center since the doors opened.”

Upon retirement, Susan Adams and her husband Mitch plan&nbsp;to spend more time with family including their three grandchildren.

MANHATTAN - The Sunset Zoo dedicated three bronze statues over the weekend in the Expedition Asia exhibit.

The sculptures were created by wildlife sculptor, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JohnParsonsSculptor/">John Parsons</a>, and are representations of the Sunset Zoo's Malayan tiger, Amur leopard and sloth bears, which can be found with the Expedition Asia Exhibit.

Longtime&nbsp;Sunset Zoological Park and Wildlife Conservation Trust board members, John and Karen Pence, wanted to leave a memorable attraction for guests of the Sunset Zoo, and started the discussion of enhancing the Expedition Asia exhibit with bronze sculptures.

"John and Karen have loved the Manhattan community for nearly 50 years, and we were honored to be considered as a place where they wanted to share art for the community. The Trust Board began looking at how we could highlight the animals of Expedition Asia some of our most endangered species who call Sunset Zoo home," said Scott Shoemaker, Sunset Zoo Director.&nbsp;

Fellow board members, Joe and Nancy Knopp joined the discussion and started researching reputable sculptors, and found John Parsons from Derby, Kansas.

Parsons is known for bronze sculptures on display at&nbsp;Cabela's, Gander Mountain, the WaterWalk in Wichita, Kansas, the 9/11 Memorial in Clovis, California, and many other locations across the country.

While working with the Pence family, Parsons developed renderings of the animals, to be used to create the final sculptures. During the development phase of the sculptures, Parsons unfortunately passed away.&nbsp;

The Zoo and the Trust worked with the Parsons family and the foundry to allow this donation to be completed using Parsons' renderings.

John Pence also passed before the sculptures were cured and could be installed at the Zoo.

"John loved the local community of Manhattan, and especially being involved with Sunset Zoo. We hope that this art will be a legacy to him and his family," said Shoemaker.&nbsp;

The sculptures are located on the left side of the walkway as you are entering Expedition Asia and can be utilized for photograph opportunities by visitors to the Zoo.

 </figure>by BECKY GOFF Little Apple PostMANHATTAN - The Sunset Zoo dedicated three bronze statues over the weekend in the Expedition Asia exhibit.The sculptures were created by wildlife sculptor, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JohnParsonsSculptor/">John Parsons</a>, and are representations of the Sunset Zoo's Malayan tiger, Amur leopard and sloth bears, which can be found with the Expedition Asia Exhibit.Longtime&nbsp;Sunset Zoological Park and Wildlife Conservation Trust board members, John and Karen Pence, wanted to leave a memorable attraction for guests of the Sunset Zoo, and started the discussion of enhancing the Expedition Asia exhibit with bronze sculptures."John and Karen have loved the Manhattan community for nearly 50 years, and we were honored to be considered as a place where they wanted to share art for the community. The Trust Board began looking at how we could highlight the animals of Expedition Asia some of our most endangered species who call Sunset Zoo home," said Scott Shoemaker, Sunset Zoo Director.&nbsp;Fellow board members, Joe and Nancy Knopp joined the discussion and started researching reputable sculptors, and found John Parsons from Derby, Kansas.Parsons is known for bronze sculptures on display at&nbsp;Cabela's, Gander Mountain, the WaterWalk in Wichita, Kansas, the 9/11 Memorial in Clovis, California, and many other locations across the country.While working with the Pence family, Parsons developed renderings of the animals, to be used to create the final sculptures. During the development phase of the sculptures, Parsons unfortunately passed away.&nbsp;The Zoo and the Trust worked with the Parsons family and the foundry to allow this donation to be completed using Parsons' renderings.John Pence also passed before the sculptures were cured and could be installed at the Zoo."John loved the local community of Manhattan, and especially being involved with Sunset Zoo. RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged computer crimes.

Just before 4:30p.m. Monday, police arrested 27-year-old Malik Peters,&nbsp; of Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. Peters was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for forgery, computer unlawful acts, and theft of property or services. 

Total bond was set at $15,000. He is no longer in custody.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for another alleged DUI arrest.

Just before 9p.m. Sunday, police arrested 39-year-old&nbsp;Russell Harmon of Manhattan, was arrested in the 1200 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Harmon was arrested on a probable cause offense of DUI- 3rd in 10 years and probation violation. 

He remains jailed on a $10,000 bond.&nbsp; &nbsp;In 2014, the Kansas Department of Corrections reported Harmon was in their custody for&nbsp;Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs - 3rd or subsequent conviction, for a conviction in Wabaunsee County.

Manhattan man accused of DUI for 3rd time in 10-years

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Sunday in Dickinson County.

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4:30p.m. Sunday in Dickinson County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Mercury Sable driven by Robin P. Maxwell, 70, Abilene, was westbound on Interstate 70 at the Chapman exit. The car traveled off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail.EMS transported Maxwell to the Memorial Health System in Abilene. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.
