MANHATTAN — A Kansas State University researcher has new support to battle one of the biggest global threats to pigs and swine production, which is a $57-billion-dollar industry in the U.S.

<a href="https://foundationfar.org/" target="_blank">The Foundation for Food &amp; Agriculture Research</a>, or FFAR, recently awarded&nbsp;<a href="https://foundationfar.org/grants-funding/grants/validating-an-african-swine-fever-virus-subunit-vaccine/" target="_blank">a $1 million Seeding Solutions Grant</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/faculty-staff/faculty/mwangi/mwangi.html" target="_blank">Waithaka Mwangi</a>, immunology professor in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/dmp/" target="_blank">department of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology</a>&nbsp;in K-State's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>, to support his ongoing work to develop safe and rapidly deployable vaccines to prevent African Swine Fever Virus.

Elanco Animal Health, K-State's Office of the Vice President for Research, Kansas State University Innovation Partners and MEDIAN Diagnostics Inc. provided matching funds for a $2,645,427 total investment.

African Swine Fever Virus, or ASFV, is a highly contagious, fatal disease in pigs that spreads rapidly. Currently, there is no commercially available treatment or vaccine for the virus.

That's why Mwangi and his team are working urgently to develop and validate a promising vaccine that could protect pigs from the virus.

"Certain proteins inherent within the virus can activate an immune response in swine," Mwangi said. "My research is identifying which ASFV proteins induce protective immune responses, the optimal dose, the most effective immunization platform and a way to differentiate infected pigs from vaccinated ones. This FFAR Seeding Solutions grant provides the funds for us to leverage additional stakeholder support needed to fund the necessary research to validate the effectiveness of a prototype vaccine that has already generated promising results."

Mwangi's work comes as swine producers urgently search for a way to protect their herds, since without a preventative vaccine or treatment, the only way to control ASFV is through enhanced biosecurity methods, such as quarantining or culling infected pigs.

ASFV has existed in Africa for decades, but the virus has started to spread globally, with cases detected recently in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Outbreaks in the U.S. would be staggeringly devastating — not just for the pork industry, but also for other agriculture commodities, such as corn and soy, that support it.

"Should the virus reach the U.S., outputs from this research could slow the virus's spread, protect millions of U.S. pigs and safeguard our food supply," said Jasmine Bruno, Ph.D., FFAR scientific program director for Cultivating Thriving Production Systems.

Additionally, Mwangi's research team is addressing safety concerns and production constraints that would allow regulatory agencies to approve the use of this vaccine.

K-State researcher has $2.6 million in new support to fight deadly African Swine Fever

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating theft at Walmart in Manhattan.

Just before 1:30p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report of felony theft in the 100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Walmart reported a man and woman duo shoplifted approximately $2,700 worth of merchandise via distraction. 

Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

WASHINGTON —President Biden declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas and ordered Federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe winter storm from January 8 to January 16, 2024, according to a statement from the White House.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm in the counties of Butler, Chase, Cloud, Edwards, Ford, Geary, Gray, Hodgeman, Morris, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Shawnee, Stafford, Trego, and Wabaunsee.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.&nbsp;

Mr. DuWayne Tewes of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.&nbsp;

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

Biden approves disaster declaration for Kansas for January winter storms

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Earlier this month, Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01), alongside U.S. Representatives Jodey Arrington (TX-19) and August Pfluger (TX-11), led their colleagues in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) joint resolution of disapproval to nullify the Biden Administration’s final rule on oil and natural gas methane emissions regulations. 

"The administration continues this war on fossil fuels and biofuels, as well," Mann said. "Really, all things liquid fuels. They do that a lot of different ways. The most recent effort now is the EPA, with yet another regulation that would force monitoring of certain methane gas emissions from certain plants, certain oil and gas producers. The end of the day though, they are doing this in an effort to try to shut them down."

There is also currently a pause on&nbsp;approvals of new liquified natural gas (LNG) export projects. Mann doesn't think that's a good idea, either.

"In our country and in our state, we can produce a lot of natural gas," Mann said. "We have tremendous reserves. We ought to be using those, exporting those, benefitting from that, instead of the administration stepping in."

In a period where Russia and Iran are still <a href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/the-axis-of-evasion-behind-chinas-oil-trade-with-iran-and-russia/">selling oil to China, despite U.S. sanctions</a>, these moves appear to be allowing those powers to fill in a market where the U.S. could conceivably be competitive, especially with Brent Crude above $89 a barrel as of Saturday.

"Don't forget, the administration chose last year to unfreeze around $6 billion of Iranian assets," Mann said. "You look up and a few months later we have this horrible attack from Hamas on Israel on October 7 of last year. Then, we have things like what we've witnessed here this year, with Iran directly attacking Israel. We need to make it really tough on the Iranians. Part of that is having a robust oil supply and oil production here in our country."

China has imported up to 1.5 billion barrels of oil from Iran as of February 2024.

2024 Little Apple Pride Day draws hundreds to City Park

DICKINSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Saturday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Navjodh&nbsp;Singh, 34, Sacramento, California,&nbsp; was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Chapman. The&nbsp; driver changed lanes to avoid a downed tree limb on the highway. The wind blew semi over. 

EMS transported Singh to&nbsp;Memorial Hospital in Abilene. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP. The accident blocked traffic for a considerable about of time Saturday afternoon.

DICKINSON COUNTY —A semi involved in an accident eastbound on Interstate 70 at Chapman is blocking traffic.&nbsp; The accident occurred just before 2:30p.m. Saturday.

Driver hospitalized after wind blows semi over on Interstate 70

RILEY COUNTY -UPDATE: As of 6:35 pm, one lane of eastbound traffic has been reopened to traffic. Tow trucks will remain on scene for the next few hours removing the remaining trucks.

Just before 5:30 pm, on Saturday, Interstate 70 was closed due to multiple semis blocking the roadway following rollover crashes.

Emergency crews are out on Interstate helping those involved until the trucks can be removed from the roadway.

MANHATTAN - According to the Riley County Emergency Management social media accounts, there have been multiple reports of downed trees and powerlines around Manhattan.

The high winds moving through the area have toppled multiple trees.

Officials are asking travelers to avoid areas where downed trees and powerlines are located and allowed crews space to safely remove the downed trees, and powerlines.

Crews from Manhattan Fire Department and Evergy are responding to clear debris and powerlines, and restore power.

DICKINSON COUNTY—A Kansas man injured in an accident during a police chase that occurred just after 11:30a.m. Friday in Dickinson County is out of the hospital and in jail.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Junction City Police and Chapman Police were in pursuit of a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by&nbsp;Jordan David Rhynes, 28, Fort RIley, on Rain Road near 2900 Avenue just south of Kansas 18.

The motorcycle struck a Chapman Police Department 2020 Dodge&nbsp; Durango driven by&nbsp;James Samuel Reynolds, 45, Chapman.

EMS transported Rhynes to Stormont Vail in Junction City. Reynolds was not injured.&nbsp; Rhynes was booked into jail just before 6p.m. Friday on requested charges of reckless driving, maximum speed limits and flee or attempt to elude, according to online jail records.

Kan. man injured after crash with police SUV moved from hospital to jail

The First Infantry Division Museum at Fort Riley is officially open following a ribbon-cutting on Friday afternoon. The museum has been under construction since 2018.&nbsp;

Dr. Bob Smith, Director of Museums at Fort Riley, spoke to the crowd and stated the process in total, from the beginning of planning stages to completion, has taken nearly 15 years. When thanking his staff and everyone involved with the process, Smith said, "We accomplished our mission, my sincere thanks and appreciation, Duty First."

Major General John V.&nbsp;Meyer,&nbsp;III was another speaker at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He explained the history of the First Infantry Division and the many battles they have fought throughout their 107-year history.&nbsp;

Major General Meyer stated that he is frequently asked, "Why do we have army museums?" Major General Meyer said, "There are 13,578 reasons why. Those are the names on the monument that I will rededicate next month at the White House in Washington D.C," he said.

Present at the ceremony was Jim Sharp, a veteran of World War II with the First Infantry Division. Major General John V. Meyer, III, acknowledged the presence of Sharp and presented him with a World War II patch.

Following the ribbon-cutting, everyone in attendance was invited to tour the inside of the museum.&nbsp;

The First Infantry Division Museum is now open to the public year-round. Hours are Sundays, 12:00 p.m. -4:30 p.m., and Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.&nbsp;

Fort Riley man injured after crash during police chase

MANHATTAN - Seventeen-year-old Malayan Tiger, Hakim, has recently received groundbreaking arthritis treatment as part of his quality-of-life health plan at Sunset Zoo.

The treatment, Synovetin OA®, was used to treat the osteoarthritis in both of Hakim's elbows, which has been causing significant pain and mobility issues.

Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Dr. Trenton Shrader,&nbsp;Clinical Assistant Professor of Exotic Pet, Wildlife, and Zoological Medicine, who works closely with Caitlin Kenney, Head Keeper at Sunset Zoo, provided the treatment to Hakim, who weighs 250 pounds.

“Hakim has severe arthritis which began to affect his ability to move around and impacted his overall quality of life. We’re hopeful to stop the vicious cycle of inflammation in Hakim’s elbows and give him long-lasting comfort,”  says Kenney.

While veterinarians have used&nbsp;Synovetin OA® to treat arthritis in thousands of dogs, this was the first time it has been used in treating a large cat. The&nbsp;Synovetin OA® treatment should provide a year of relief.

"From customized care plans, and modifications in an animal's environment, to the most up-to-date veterinary care, these are just some of the steps we take in animal care as part of being an Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo. To help the&nbsp;overall conservation of animals is a vital part of our mission and we are thankful to have such a caring and dedicated staff and vet team at Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine to make our animals'&nbsp;lives fulfilling and comfortable," said Sunset Zoo Director, Scott Shoemaker.&nbsp;

Hakim is one of three tigers who call Expedition Asia home at Sunset Zoo. Expedition Asia opened in 2022 and helps provide dedicated habitats for Malayan tigers with features such as heated outdoor pads, green space, wading pools, indoor climate-controlled areas, and a birthing suite for cubs.&nbsp;

"We know our mission is to help provide the best care for the animals we serve at Sunset Zoo. We are very thankful and proud to be caring for animals like Hakim who are in their geriatric stage of life. Knowing that as a team we are working together to provide the best outcomes possible for our Sunset Zoo animals makes a difference in our overall mission of inspiring conservation," said Kenney.&nbsp;

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY - The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office took a report of a stolen trailer on Wednesday, April 17th.

The trailer was stolen from the 9000 block of Highway 24 in Manhattan, sometime in the last few months. The trailer is a 21' long 2020 Titan utility bumper pull trailer, with wood decking and black frame.

On April 22nd, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office was contacted about the theft of a white, 2004 Chevolet 1500 regular cab pickup with a Z71 decal on the rear passenger side of the bed. A silver Weather Guard toolbox was in the bed at the time of the theft.

The truck was stolen some time between 12:00pm on April 19, 2024 and 8:00am on April 22nd.

It is not believed that these thefts are connected.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes in Manhattan.

Just before 1:30p.m. Thursday, police arrested 22-year-old Joshue Serrano of Manhattan in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Serrano was arrested on a Riley County District Court warrant for rape- sexual intercourse with a mentally deficient victim and aggravated sexual battery of a mentally deficient victim. 

He met the requirement of a $25,000 bond and is no longer in custody, according to the RCPD.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Economist and former Republican State Treasurer candidate Michael Austin said Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's veto of the tax plan that literally was unanimous in the Kansas House is easy to explain.

"I can explain it as a betrayal of the people's trust," Austin said. "Governor Kelly has turned her back on not only the constituents that put her in office, but even her own party. If you have a bill where both Republicans and Democrats are supporting this tax compromise, why would you decide that the best thing to do is to get in the way?"

Governor Kelly appears to want to keep three income tax brackets. The plan she vetoed would have reduced that number to two.

"While that might sound okay, at a deeper look, what you realize is that she's proposing a 3% tax on the lowest income Kansans, whereas the bipartisan measure had a 0% tax on the lowest income," Austin said.&nbsp;

Austin believes there will be an effort to override this veto.

"Laura Kelly claims that the bipartisan bill is too expensive," Austin said. "In reality, what she's talking about is roughly a 10% difference. What she has proposed is only 10% cheaper than what the House and Senate put out there. If you took a look at that over a longer horizon, we're still having a state savings of roughly $2 billion, that's after the tax plans would be put into place."

Usually, the first plan that both parties can agree on ends up being the most reasonable legislation that can get across the line.

Economist: Veto 'betrayal of people's trust'

On the afternoon of April 22, police responded to an incident involving three juveniles and knives at Sherran Park, 517, Marshall Avenue in Chapman, according to a media release.

A video of the incident is circulating among students. Police arrested two boys. A 14-year-old victim was not injured. Police have made a report to the Dickinson County Attorney's office for possible charges.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest.

Just after 4a.m. Wednesday, Cpl. Jon Sumner of the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office was on active patrol when he encountered a suspicious vehicle parked directly within the middle of the Kansas and Kansas 99 intersection south of Alma, according to a media release.

Sumner observed the driver slouched over the steering wheel and summoned EMS. Realizing the vehicle was running and still in drive&nbsp; Sumner immediately returned to his patrol vehicle and gently set his push bar in direct contact with the suspect vehicle grill in a head to head to prevent it from rolling off road, into traffic or suddenly being able to flee or elude. 

Sumner roused awake and made contact with the driver, identified as 25-year-old Dustin Marquarndt of Dwight, Kansas. Marquarndt was asked to step out of the vehicle after&nbsp; Sumner noticed signs of impairment and the presence of a firearm. 

Assisting the driver from the vehicle, Sumner observed illegal narcotics in plain view. The subsequent lawful probable cause search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 1 gram of Methamphetamine, 4 grams of Cocaine &amp; other associated illicit narcotics paraphernalia. 

Due to the totality of circumstances &amp; objective reasonableness to include the driver exhibiting signs of impairment, Cpl Sumner placed Mr. Marquarndt under arrest without incident transported him to the county jail where he was booked in on requested charges of possession of opiates/narcotic or certain stimulant, possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, possession of firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegal parking on highway and not wearing his seat belt. 

Upon driver refusal to voluntarily submit to chemical testing, Sumner applied for, was granted and then executed a lawful blood draw search warrant upon the accused.&nbsp;

The Podcast About a Podcast, Agro Connection

The latest episode of “Wheat’s on Your Mind” is a podcast about a podcast. More specifically, what started as a podcast to teach Brazilian farmers about American agriculture has evolved into a venture that connects people who want to push the boundaries of knowledge about agriculture.&nbsp;

Agro Connection is a team of young Brazilian agriculture scientists that produce podcasts and social media and guide specialized international agriculture tours. Harries sat down with Carlos Pires, one of the founders of Agro Connection, to learn more about the origins of this information-sharing work and a recent trip the group organized for members of the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL) program to dive deep into the heart of Brazilian agriculture.&nbsp;

The award-winning podcast started as a random thought discussed between friends over a beer. Today, Agro Connection bills itself as an international information portal that connects people who want to push the frontiers of knowledge about agriculture. Agro Connections is an award-winning podcast with&nbsp;more than&nbsp;9,000 downloads of 37 episodes in less than two years. Its YouTube videos have reached 4,600 subscribers and nearly 200,000 views. The group also runs two WhatsApp groups for about 500 Brazilian farmers, answering their daily questions about American agriculture, including crop rotations, soil fertility applications, inputs and technologies.&nbsp;

“There’s a lot of good information out there that we can take back to our country, so that was the main goal,” Pires said. “The idea was communication because I have a passion for that. My dream was always to find a position as a professor in research and extension, and the podcast was just part of that — a way I found to&nbsp;be connected&nbsp;with farmers in my country.”

As an extension of this communications effort, Agro Connection started connecting Brazilian and American farmers — first by taking Brazilians working or studying in the United States to visit farms. More recently, they flipped that work to taking Americans to Brazil, including the Kansas Agricultural and Rural Leadership Program.&nbsp;

“Brazil is one of the leaders in the use of biologicals and regenerative agriculture, so we have a lot of long-term notes with years and years of cover crops and very healthy soils,” Pires said. “So, we want to take Americans there to spend some time.”&nbsp;

More specifically, what started as a podcast to teach Brazilian farmers about American agriculture has evolved into a venture that connects people who want to push the boundaries of knowledge about agriculture.&nbsp;Agro Connection is a team of young Brazilian agriculture scientists that produce podcasts and social media and guide specialized international agriculture tours. Harries sat down with Carlos Pires, one of the founders of Agro Connection, to learn more about the origins of this information-sharing work and a recent trip the group organized for members of the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL) program to dive deep into the heart of Brazilian agriculture.&nbsp;The award-winning podcast started as a random thought discussed between friends over a beer. Today, Agro Connection bills itself as an international information portal that connects people who want to push the frontiers of knowledge about agriculture. Agro Connections is an award-winning podcast with&nbsp;more than&nbsp;9,000 downloads of 37 episodes in less than two years. Its YouTube videos have reached 4,600 subscribers and nearly 200,000 views. The group also runs two WhatsApp groups for about 500 Brazilian farmers, answering their daily questions about American agriculture, including crop rotations, soil fertility applications, inputs and technologies.&nbsp;“There’s a lot of good information out there that we can take back to our country, so that was the main goal,” Pires said. “The idea was communication because I have a passion for that. My dream was always to find a position as a professor in research and extension, and the podcast was just part of that — a way I found to&nbsp;be connected&nbsp;with farmers in my country.”As an extension of this communications effort, Agro Connection started connecting Brazilian and American farmers — first by taking Brazilians working or studying in the United States to visit farms. More recently, they flipped that work to taking Americans to Brazil, including the Kansas Agricultural and Rural Leadership Program.&nbsp;“Brazil is one of the leaders in the use of biologicals and regenerative agriculture, so we have a lot of long-term notes with years and years of cover crops and very healthy soils,” Pires said. “So, we want to take Americans there to spend some time.”&nbsp;Pires&nbsp;was raised&nbsp;in southern Brazil, where several of his family members work in agronomy, tracing back to the original family member who immigrated from Italy to Brazil. He recently received his doctorate in agronomy and soil science from Kansas State University and will take the next step in his career this summer at North Dakota State University. The effort started in 2017 and&nbsp;was designed&nbsp;to bridge the gap between wheat farmers and consumers. In this podcast episode, Marsha Boswell, Kansas Wheat vice president of communications, walked Harries through how this wheat industry effort uses innovative strategies and platforms to educate consumers about wheat, its benefits and the farming process.“For many years, wheat farmers have done a good job of telling what the health benefits of wheat foods are — folic acid, vitamins and minerals, a lot of that type of information,” Boswell said. “But what we haven’t always done is tell the story of how that wheat gets to your plate and the farmers that grow it. The main reason for EatWheat is to connect consumers and farmers with the food, how it’s grown, how it gets to them — that’s what we’re trying to accomplish with this program.”&nbsp;A changing media landscape that shifted from print to digital and targeted advertising means it is harder for consumers to separate the wheat from the chaff&nbsp;when it comes to&nbsp;nutrition, farming practices, recipes and more. EatWheat.org uses strategies like search engine optimization (SEO) and analytics&nbsp;to better understand&nbsp;what information those consumers want,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;drive traffic to wheat-related content.&nbsp;Equally as&nbsp;important&nbsp;to this work&nbsp;is storytelling, which helps connect consumers with the origins of their food, featuring farmer profiles and educational resources on wheat varieties and uses.&nbsp;“The number one page&nbsp;that people&nbsp;come to is the ‘Six Classes of Wheat’ page,” Boswell said. “It ranks high on Google, which is beneficial to us because it brings people to the site&nbsp;and&nbsp;then they have the opportunity to learn more about farmers or find some recipes or&nbsp;learn&nbsp;other things about wheat. There are several other pages that do really well along the same lines of learning about wheat and how it’s grown.”&nbsp;The combination of storytelling and analysis creates opportunities to create engaging content for challenging platforms like TikTok and Instagram to inspire consumers about wheat foods.
