&nbsp;The New Year’s Holiday period outranks most of the other holidays in number of crashes in which at least one of the drivers is impaired.&nbsp;

So, plan ahead. Leave your car at home and ride with a designated driver or take other transportation services.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you are hosting a party, make sure everyone has a sober ride home. If you see what appears to be an impaired driver, please call 911, you might just save a life.

MANHATTAN — Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a Christmas morning house fire in Manhattan.

Just after 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to house fire at 2717 Wyndham Heights Drive, according to a media release.&nbsp;

Crews found a single-family dwelling with heavy fire and smoke coming from the back of the house. Fire crews aggressively attacked the fire and searched the house for occupants, but none were found.&nbsp; 

The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained within 30 minutes.&nbsp; A total of 17 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus with fire units clearing by 10:30 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;The house is a one-story with a walk-out basement.&nbsp; Two occupants live in the home, but neither were home when firefighters arrived on the scene.&nbsp;

 The building is no longer habitable. Loss is estimated at $250,000 to contents and $450,000 to the structure. The owner is listed as Kenny Fischer of the same address.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As the holiday season winds down, many households face the question: what to do with the Christmas tree and holiday greenery? Instead of sending them to the landfill, consider recycling them! Repurposing your tree and greenery is an eco-friendly way to give them a second life while benefiting your garden, wildlife, or community.

Here are some practical and creative ways to recycle your Christmas tree and greenery:

1. Turn It in to Mulch Most natural Christmas trees can be chipped into mulch, which is excellent for garden beds and pathways. If you have access to a chipper, you can do this yourself. Otherwise, check with your local recycling center or municipal services—many communities offer free tree chipping programs.

2. Create Habitat for Wildlife Place your tree in your yard or garden to create shelter for birds and small animals during the winter months. You can even decorate it with birdseed ornaments, suet, or peanut butter-coated pinecones to provide food for wildlife.

3. Compost the Greenery Cut branches and greenery can be added to your compost pile or used as a base layer. The needles are rich in carbon and can help balance the compost's nitrogen content. Keep in mind that large branches should be trimmed down for easier decomposition.

4. Protect Your Plants Lay trimmed branches over perennial beds to help insulate them during the cold months. The branches can act as a natural mulch, protecting plants from harsh winter temperatures.

5. Check Local Recycling Programs Many communities have specific programs for tree and greenery recycling. Some cities collect trees curbside for recycling into mulch or erosion control products. Contact your local solid waste department or extension office for details.

6. Use It for Erosion Control In some areas, recycled Christmas trees are used for erosion control in wetlands or along riverbanks. These trees help stabilize soil and provide a natural barrier against erosion.

Don’t Burn It Indoors: Dry trees are highly flammable and can create a fire hazard. They also produce creosote, which can build up in your chimney.

Remove All Decorations: Before recycling, ensure all ornaments, tinsel, and lights are removed to prevent contamination.

Avoid Artificial Trees: Artificial trees cannot be recycled and should be reused or donated if in good condition.

We want to warn our community about a concerning scam circulating in our area. Scammers are spoofing the Junction City Police Department’s phone number and pretending to be a detective. Here’s how it works:

1️⃣ The scammer claims the victim has an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court or missing jury duty.

2️⃣ . They insist the victim is under a court-issued gag order, which forbids them from discussing the situation with anyone.

3️⃣ They demand immediate payment within 30 minutes to avoid arrest.

4️⃣ Victims are instructed to send money via Western Union, Money Zone, or by purchasing gift cards (e.g., Walmart, Dillons) and providing the codes over the phone.

5️⃣ Victims are told to wait 24 hours and bring a payment receipt to the police department to clear the warrant.

The Junction City Police Department will NEVER solicit money over the phone.

Hang up immediately if someone calls making these claims—it is a scam!

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward from AAA Kansas told Hutch Post that Perry Como had it right in his Christmas song, across the Sunflower State, the traffic will be terrific.

"It has been a boon this year in terms of all kinds of travel," Steward said. "We're going to continue that throughout the holidays ending the year. We're projecting about one point two to one point three million Kansans will be traveling 50 miles or more from their home during the holidays. We're talking about Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 is our holiday period. Almost 92% of travelers will be driving to their holiday destination."

That's well over a million Kansans that will be on the roads between now and the end of the year.

"Gas prices, as they've been all year, have been very moderate," Steward said. "We're looking at $2.68 a gallon on the average in Kansas right now. That's about thirty five cents less than the national average. That puts us fifth lowest in the country. So generally, if you're traveling in state or to our south and southeast, that's where you'll be seeing the lowest gas prices in the country."

There will be a few calls to the side of the road for AAA, but the estimate isn't too bad, given the volume of drivers.

"Last year during the holiday period, AAA Kansas Emergency Roadside Service crews responded to about 4000 calls throughout the state during that holiday travel period," Steward said. "We anticipate about the same. A lot of the same reasons we talk about, tires and batteries are among our top reasons for for getting calls from members, so make sure that you're getting your car checked out, make sure it's ready for the road trip, because, you know, we're always out there to help. We'd prefer that you not spend part of your holiday stuck on the side of the road. Get your car checked out before you hit the road, if at all possible."

The Kansas Department of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension (KSRE) will offer six regional Local Food Producer Workshops to assist farmers’ market vendors and managers, and for those wanting to sell food products directly to consumers, according to a media release from the agency.

Kansas farmers’ markets not only provide a fresh food source, but also stimulate the local economy. In 2024, more than 100 farmers’ markets were registered with KDA’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

“We strive to provide education to Kansas farmers’ markets and agricultural businesses to help them thrive,” said Sammy Gleason, KDA’s&nbsp;From the Land of Kansas&nbsp;manager. “These workshops will support local businesses by providing up-to-date food safety information and new marketing insights for direct consumers.”

Workshop topics will vary slightly by location. Highlighted topics include:

The Kansas Ag Growth Strategy has identified training for small companies via workshops as a key growth outcome for the specialty crop sector. The Local Food Producer Workshops will provide education through partnerships to help make Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses more successful.

Riley County Arrest Report December 21

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.5% in November. This is an increase from 3.4% in October and an increase from 2.6% in November 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 7,900 from October. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 7,100 over the month, while government increased by 800.

The unemployment rate in Riley County is down from 3.4 percent in October to 3.1 percent in November.&nbsp;The rate is down in Geary, Wabaunsee and Pottatawomie counties.

“Total nonfarm job estimates for Kansas rebounded in November following a temporary drop last month. The fluctuations were partially due to the impacts of strike activity in October,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen.

“Over the last three months, Kansas has averaged 2,100 jobs added per month.”

Since November 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,100. This change is due to an increase of 14,100 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,000 government jobs.

MANHATTAN —Law enforcement are investigating an alleged phone scam.

Just before 11:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of theft&nbsp; in the 3300 block of Mercer Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 73-year-old woman reported an unknown subject called her posing as someone from her place of employment and had her purchase gift cards. 

Total loss associated with this report is $1,000. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD: Woman lost $1,000 in gift card scam

Mckenzie Heidrick wins the girls division of Hoop Shoot hitting 3 out of 7 free throws.

The finals of the girls competition in the 2024 Hoop Holler N’ Shoot free throw shooting contest were held during half time of Wednesday’s KSU women’s game.

Participants won their way into the finals via shoot offs conducted at Manhattan area elementary schools among 5th grade students. Over 550 students participated in the competition.

The winners and the schools they represent are as follows:

1st Mckenzie Heidrick, Oliver Brown – hitting 3 out of 7

2nd Jimena Chavez, Bergman – hitting 2 out of 7

3rd Colbie Peterson, Bluemont – hitting 1 out of 7*

Prizes awarded to all finalists included a plaque and a K-State coaches autographed Hoop Holler N’Shoot t-shirt.

This is the 26th Anniversary of Hoop Holler N’ Shoot, during that time over 15,000 5th graders have participated in the program.

Hoop Holler N’ Shoot is a free throw contest for 5th graders in the Manhattan area schools. A boy and girl champion is determined at each school. The grade school champions move on to semi-finals and finals at Kansas State University basketball games. 

Participating sponsors are Manhattan Optimist Club, KS StateBank, McDonalds, Manhattan-Ogden USD 383, Manhattan Parks and Recreation, K-State Bands, Q-Country 103.5, and Power Hits 97.5.

Riley County Arrest Report December 20

&nbsp; Riley County, KS – Diane Creek started work Monday, December 9 as the new Health Department Director for Riley County. In this role, Creek will also serve as the Local Health Officer, leading the department’s mission to promote and protect the health of Riley County residents.

As Health Department Director, Creek will oversee department programs and services, review agency activities, ensure compliance with local, state, and federal statutes, and collaborate with community partners to address complex public health issues. The position is authorized by state law (K.S.A. 65-202) as well as local resolutions and ordinances.

Creek brings a wealth of experience in public health, social work, and administration to the county. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Kansas State University, Creek started her career at the Salina Health Department working with high-risk pregnant and parenting mothers. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree in social work from Washburn University.

Creek has held key positions at the Shawnee County Health Department, and the Toe River Health District as director during the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences have fueled her passion for addressing critical public health challenges, including rural community outreach, preparedness, and drug recovery initiatives.

“Diane has demonstrated a strong commitment to public health and the well-being of communities,” said Commission Chairman John Ford. &nbsp;“Her extensive experience and innovative mindset make her an excellent fit to lead our Health Department and strengthen services in Riley County.”

Creek shared her enthusiasm for the role, saying, “Everything about who I am and what I believe has led me to be passionate about public health. I want my work to make life better for everybody in the community, not just a select few. Junction City Community Leaders Graduate from Leadership Kansas Program

The U.S. Department of Energy recently announced that ten proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor projects have been scaled down to three, none of which will run through Kansas. In the meantime, the Grain Belt Express transmission line, approved by the Kansas Corporation Commission in 2011, will continue through the state regulatory process.

While the route of the Grain Belt Express project fell within the borders of one of the proposed Department of Energy corridors, its status as a previously approved project has not changed and is moving forward.

In addition, without a federal corridor designation, state jurisdiction and approval processes remain intact for the Grain Belt Express, and the Kansas Corporation Commission will continue to review any potential future projects.

Federal “backstop” siting authority or the use of federal eminent domain are not an option.&nbsp; The Department of Energy’s decision does not reverse the previously announced $4.9 billion conditional loan guarantee awarded to the Grain Belt Express project on Nov. 25, 2024.&nbsp;

To date, the KCC has taken the following actions in respect to the Grain Belt Express project:

2011 – The Grain Belt Express project, designed to transport energy from Kansas wind and solar farms, was approved based on benefits to the state and granted a certificate of convenience and necessity to build the line.

 2013 – The route of the Kansas portion of the line was approved, beginning at a converter station in Ford County and continuing on to Missouri.

 2019 – The Commission approved the acquisition of the project by Invenergy Transmission LLC from Grain Belt Express Clean Line LLC.

 2023 – The KCC approved a request to allow the line to be built in two phases. Phase 1, which includes Kansas and Missouri, can begin once all regulatory and financing requirements have been obtained for that portion of the project. 

The order did not remove or alter any of the protections for landowners required by the commission when it approved Invenergy's acquisition of the project in 2019. In 2024, the KCC gave conditional approval to a siting plan for two 345 kV transmission lines, known as the AC Collector System, designed to connect wind and solar farms to the Grain Belt Express.

A final order on the siting of the AC collector lines is expected to be issued in 2025.

Grain Belt Express line continues through Kansas regulatory process

Erickson, D.C.,</a> license number 01-04711, surrenders his license to practice, and such surrender shall be treated as a revocation, according to a statement from the board.&nbsp;

In April Ericson was found guilty and convicted of sexual battery in Riley County District Court. The conviction was based on Erickson's conduct during the course of treatment with a patient.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—A Kansas teen was injured in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Wednesday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford F250 driven by&nbsp;Corbi M.&nbsp;Tenpenny, 15, Eskridge, was westbound on Mission Valley Road approximately 2.7 miles west of Mission Valley High School

The pickup traveled off the north edge of the road and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle then crossed the westbound and eastbound lanes of the road, entered the south ditch and rolled.

EMS transported Tenpenny to Children's Mercy in Kansas City. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

15-year-old hospitalized after pickup rollover accident

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two teens in connection with a fight.

Just after 6p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report of aggravated battery on&nbsp; in the 400 block of Clydesdale Drive in Ogden, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Nicholas Pounds, 17, of Ogden, threw a metal chair at another resident. Legend Brown, 16, stepped in the middle of the altercation pushing Pounds to the ground and  assaulting him. Police arrested both Pounds and Brown.&nbsp; Both were booked on requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated battery; Recklessly can cause bodily&nbsp;harm/disfig/death w/ deadly weapon, according to the county arrest report.
