&nbsp;The Shrine Bowl of Kansas, Inc. Board of Directors has announced a new multi-year partnership with Emporia and Emporia State University to host the 2026, 2027 and 2028 Kansas Shrine Bowl games. The annual East vs. West all-star football game, which began in 1974, is scheduled to be played on the fourth Saturday in June starting in 2026 at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University in Emporia. Game dates will be Saturday, June 27, 2026, Saturday, June 26, 2027, and Saturday, June 24, 2028.

“We are thrilled and honored that Emporia has been selected to host the Kansas Shrine Bowl from 2026 to 2028. This is a testament to our community's dedication to fostering excellence in sports and hospitality,” said LeLan Dains, Director Visit Emporia. “We can’t wait to showcase Emporia’s vibrant community and provide an unforgettable experience for players, fans, and everyone involved.”

In addition to the all-star football game, the week of the Kansas Shrine Bowl includes the Masonic All-State Marching Band Camp, the Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Cheer Camp, the Shriners Children’s Hospital Experience, the Kansas Shrine Bowl Charity Carnival, the largest annual Shriners Parade in Kansas, the Kansas Shrine Bowl golf tournament, and many other gatherings of family, friends, alumni and Shriners from all across Kansas. “The size of our event, along with the logistics for student housing and meals throughout camp, puts a significant strain on the local community and university to host the Kansas Shrine Bowl,” said Brice Kesler, Executive Director of the Kansas Shrine Bowl. “Due to the growing size of our event and the accommodations it requires, it was the right time to find a location that was able to annually accommodate the scope of our event. Emporia and Emporia State have proven to be excellent hosts for our event, they met us with excitement and fully embraced the opportunity to make their community a home for the Kansas Shrine Bowl.”

Emporia State has hosted the Kansas Shrine Bowl on six previous occasions, 1998, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2024. Only the three original host cities, Lawrence, Manhattan and Wichita have hosted the Kansas Shrine Bowl on more occasions.

The East team will continue to hold their team training camp at Ottawa University, while the West team will host their team training camp at Hutchinson Community College starting in 2025. The coaches and players report to camp the weekend prior to the game for practice. The band camp and cheer camp participants report to camp at the host site on Tuesday and Wednesday of game week, respectively.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has added new features to the KanDrive road and weather information website and mobile app in an effort to improve safety and create an enhanced travel experience for drivers across the state. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The new interactive navigation features were developed as part of the U.S. 83 Advanced Technology Project currently underway, and most will be available for use statewide. The U.S. 83 Corridor Project extends from the southern Finney County line to the northern Thomas County line.

KDOT enhances KanDrive with new safety and travel features for drivers

Members of Kansas’ congressional delegation celebrated the federal government’s decision Monday to remove a proposed electric transmission line route from a program offering assistance for power infrastructure projects.

The U.S. Department of Energy earlier this year announced a list of preliminary “<a href="https://www.energy.gov/gdo/national-interest-electric-transmission-corridor-designation-process" target="_blank">National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors</a>” to offer financial assistance and permits to transmission line builders in areas with little infrastructure.

One of the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/09/27/transmission-line-developer-asks-for-narrower-corridor-through-kansas-nearby-states/">corridors the agency initially proposed</a>&nbsp;was the&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/tag/grain-belt-express/" target="_blank">Grain Belt Express</a>, a 5,000-megawatt transmission line expected to run from Kansas to Indiana proposed by Chicago-based Invenergy. The Grain Belt route was dropped from the program when the Department of Energy&nbsp;<a href="https://www.energy.gov/gdo/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-three-high-priority-areas-advancing-national" target="_blank">narrowed the proposed corridors Monday</a>.

U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, a Kansas Republican, said the program “represented a dangerous overreach of federal authority,” and on Monday took credit for the Department of Energy’s removal of the Grain Belt route.

“We are glad to report that we won this battle, and Kansans voices were heard at the highest levels,” he said.

But the Department of Energy’s decision Monday will not keep the Grain Belt Express transmission line from being built. While the agency’s program helps obtain permits for transmission projects that can’t get state approval, Invenergy has already obtained state approvals for Grain Belt.

“This designation was not required for the project to continue to advance toward construction,” said Patrick Whitty, senior vice president of public affairs for transmission at Invenergy.

Whitty said in a statement that Invenergy, too, asked that the Grain Belt route be removed from consideration for the Department of Energy program and was pleased the agency listened.

Grain Belt Express is expected to run from southwest Kansas&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/07/11/grain-belt-express-announces-expansion-that-means-more-clean-energy-for-missouri/" target="_blank">carrying renewable energy through Missouri</a>&nbsp;and Illinois before ending at the Indiana border. To do so, the line has to cross thousands of properties and needs easements on landowners’ properties across three states.

Invenergy says it has obtained the vast majority of those easements through voluntary negotiations with landowners. For the rest, the project was granted the right of eminent domain, a legal mechanism that allows utilities and governments to take land or easements from unwilling landowners and compensate them.

Grain Belt’s&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2022/06/08/missouri-governor-to-sign-compromise-legislation-after-efforts-to-stymie-grain-belt-express/" target="_blank">ability to use eminent domain has drawn the ire</a>&nbsp;of Republican lawmakers and farm groups who&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2021/04/19/grain-belt-transmission-line-forges-ahead-amid-landowner-lawmaker-pushback/" target="_blank">fought to undermine the project at the Missouri General Assembly</a>&nbsp;for years.

Now federal lawmakers from Kansas, including Marshall, Sen. Jerry Moran and Rep. Tracey Mann are railing against the project.

Mann called Monday’s announcement a “huge win for Kansans.”

“Kansans made it clear from the very beginning that we were not interested in the federal government seizing our private land,” Mann said.

Moran said the decision to allow projects like Grain Belt Express “should be left up to Kansans, not Washington.”

In Missouri, U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley has taken issue with a $4.9 billion&nbsp;<a href="https://www.energy.gov/lpo/articles/lpo-announces-conditional-commitment-grain-belt-express-construct-high-voltage-direct" target="_blank">loan the Department of Energy offered to the Grain Belt project</a>.

<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hawley-Letter-to-Biden-Energy-Department-re-Grain-Belt-Express.pdf" target="_blank">Hawley wrote a letter</a>&nbsp;to U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm saying the Grain Belt line will wreak havoc on landowners.

“Your decision to commit funding to the Grain Belt Express via conditional loan comes after repeated refusals to engage with my constituents,” Hawley said, “who live in constant fear of their land being confiscated.”

Grain Belt route removed from federal transmission program — but project will go forward

The holiday season often brings people together to celebrate. The Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Turnpike Authority remind all drivers to understand the impact of impaired driving during their celebrations.

Impaired driving is illegal and deadly. Last year from Dec. 19, 2023-Jan. 1, 2024, KDOT records indicate nine people died in Kansas crashes. Impairment including drugs and alcohol was involved in 19 crashes where 12 people were injured.

“We’re reminded of the value of our relationships with others during each holiday season,” said KDOT Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “Everyone should do their part to make sure they arrive at their holiday celebrations safely.”

Drivers will see increased law enforcement presence on Kansas roads during the holiday season, as part of the national campaigns Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and If you Feel Different, You Drive Different. Drive High, Get a DUI.

“During this Christmas and New Year’s holiday, law enforcement officers across the state are determined to prevent impaired driving crashes that lead to injury and fatal crashes,” said KHP Superintendent Colonel Erik Smith.

The average cost of a DUI is about $10,000 in attorney’s fees, fines, court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance rates and more. Offenders can also lose their driver’s licenses.

“Driving impaired is a choice,” said KTA CEO Steve Hewitt. “It’s essential for everyone to take responsibility, plan ahead and ensure their celebrations don’t end in tragedy.”

KDOT, KHP and KTA want all drivers to make traffic safety a priority throughout the year as well as during the holidays. Before the celebrations begin, make a plan. Use a designated driver, a rideshare or a cab. If a friend is leaving a holiday celebration impaired, take the keys. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.

The Twenty- Fifth Annual Assisted Deer Hunt was held this past weekend, Dec 13th – 15th at Milford Lake. 9 youth hunters participated in the outing and harvested 4 does.

Sportsmen Acres served as basecamp for operations where volunteer guides where assigned to each hunter and a hearty breakfast was prepared each morning. The hunt took place in the Milford State Park and the Curtis Creek Park.

A special thanks to Grandpa Boones Cabin &amp; Outfitters in Milford Kansas for overseeing the rifle sight-in, Dieck’s Locker Plant for providing a free processing of harvested deer, and the Geary County Fish and Game Association for hosting the event.

Just before 10:30a.m. Friday, officers filed a report of theft in the 500 block of Richards Drive, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 30-year-old man reported he agreed to donate $5 to a charitable cause but his credit card was charged $6,000.

I have a very tattered and worn Christmas stocking that is nearly 50 years old. To look at it, it's nothing fancy: it is red and made of thin felt. You can't even hang it up anymore because the loop used to hang it broke many years ago. But this stocking is mine and it is very special to me. What makes it special is the joy I see on my mom’s face when she presents it to me each year, and the childlike wonder it brings as we share time together.

 These emotions have nothing to do with the content of the stocking. Just as my stocking holds memories and love, family traditions can create similar lasting connections. Simple traditions and objects like my Christmas stocking can hold profound meaning, rooted in emotional connection, nostalgia, and shared family rituals. These moments and items are powerful tools in strengthening family bonds, building identity and fostering joy that transcends material aspects. Curious about building or strengthening family traditions in your home? Here are three ways to get you started.

1. Create Traditions with Special Objects

My Christmas stocking is a perfect example of how a simple object can become a cherished part of a family’s story. These items are more than just “things” - they carry the love, joy, and memories associated with family traditions. For example, maybe you could all write notes of gratitude to place in stockings or a family journal. 

You could also consider twisting old traditions. For example, you could turn gift-giving into a scavenger hunt or incorporate a charitable activity into your traditions, such as donating toys to a local non-profit.

The Ciy of Manhattan said starting Monday, December 16, two-way traffic on Denison Avenue will be restored south of Kimball Avenue to the NBAF main entrance, allowing NBAF traffic to access the facility directly from Kimball rather than the detour.

However, the next phase of Denison Avenue construction will start around the same time, with a closure extending south from the NBAF entrance to the north side of the Kerr Drive intersection. The overall area detour will remain in place for Denison Avenue frontages south of the NBAF complex (see map above for details).

During this next period of construction, traffic access to Denison south of Kimball will be “right in, right out” only. Denison traffic will&nbsp;not&nbsp;be able to cross Kimball to the north nor turn left across traffic to go westbound — only turn right onto Kimball.

Westbound traffic on Kimball will be able to turn left onto Denison, but&nbsp;must&nbsp;yield to oncoming traffic before turning as there is still no signal in place at the intersection.

Denison Avenue will remain closed from NBAF to Kerr Drive through the&nbsp;summer of 2025, but this closure will continue to move south afterward as work proceeds.

Access to the K-State Recreation Center, BRI and Veterinary Medicine buildings will be impacted by this closure. Please see map below for specific detour details.

Thanks to awards from the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>, 21 Kansas State University students will conduct hands-on cancer research in the spring 2025 semester.

The center's Cancer Research Awards will provide the selected students with hands-on laboratory research experience that emphasizes the importance of ethical research practices and effectively communicating science to the public.

"The Cancer Research Awards allow students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, preparing them for success in their future careers," said Sherry Fleming, director of the Johnson Cancer Research Center. "These awardees represent some of the brightest minds at K-State and in Kansas, and we are confident they will excel in their chosen fields."

Each awardee receives $2,000 to support their research endeavors, enabling them to focus on laboratory work instead of non-academic employment. Additionally, $1,000 is allocated to each student for research supplies, enhancing their capacity to conduct impactful studies.

"The Cancer Research Award will help me explore my growing interest in research and veterinary medicine," said Ashley Najar, sophomore in animal sciences and industry,&nbsp;Shawnee. "I'm grateful to be working with Dr. Chieko Azuma and researching canine nasal tumors and the potential ways to reduce them. Through this research, I'll reach a better understanding of the disease and how it affects both canines and humans."

&nbsp;Sunset Zoo is mourning the loss of (Vladamir) Vlad, their male Amur leopard who called Sunset Zoo home for over 11 years. Vlad passed away of natural causes on November 25. At 20 years old, Vlad was one of the oldest living Amur leopards on record, exceeding the life expectancy of leopards in the wild, about 10-15 years, and in human care, which is about 18 years.

Vlad was born at Erie Zoo on February 9, 2004, and came to Sunset Zoo in October 2013, from Utah’s Hogle Zoo.“Vlad was one of the biggest personalities that I had the privilege of caring for. I am honored to have worked with Vlad for his entire 11 years here at Sunset Zoo. &nbsp;I had the chance to build an amazing relationship with him through that time and am so thankful he had time to be in the new Expedition Asia habitat, which he loved,” said Large Cat Animal Keeper II,&nbsp;Denise LeRoux.

Sunset Zoo’s Expedition Asia is also home to two other critically endangered Amur leopards. Our male, Chobby, and female, Annika, have a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Amur leopard Species Survival Plan. “Every animal makes a difference in the conservation of these critically endangered species. Every animal we care for is of utmost importance to us. The care he received here was top notch, and we have our amazing care staff to thank for his longevity. As we move forward in the journey of survival for the Amur leopard, we will continue to give care and aid in the future breeding of these amazing animals," said Sunset Zoo Director, Scott Shoemaker.

&nbsp;December 22nd will be the last day to see the current exhibits on display at the Riley County Historical Museum, located at 2309 Claflin Road. The museum will temporarily close beginning December 23rd for interior renovations. During the closure, staff and volunteers will repaint the interior, update the building layout, and install new exhibits.

The museum’s reopening is planned for February 8, 2025.“These six weeks will allow our staff to clear the current exhibits, safely move items to storage, paint, and improve the layout of the lobby to make it more welcoming for guests,” said Museum Director Katharine Hensler. “In addition, we’ll explore the possibility of installing new lighting.”

The new exhibits will not only be modernized according to current interpretive standards, but they will also showcase the diversity of all Riley County communities and include the voices of more Riley County residents, past and present.

“We intend to take a multi-vocal approach to the way we share information in these new exhibits. This is also a great opportunity for us to bring artifacts that have never been exhibited before out of storage to share with our visitors. During this time, we will also update the lobby configuration to be more inviting and welcoming, and the gift shop will get a whole new inventory,” said Hensler.&nbsp;

“Typically, January and July are the months with the lowest attendance at the museum. We plan to reopen the weekend of February 8 and 9 and we look forward to celebrating with the community. There will be opening receptions scheduled for Riley County Historic Society members and the public,” explained Hensler. Funding for the renovations was provided by private donations and the Riley County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization working in partnership with the museum to preserve the community’s diverse history. Volunteers will assist with the project, providing critical support to facilitate the work. During the closure, museum will staff continue regular operations and administrative tasks. They will also continue to offer tours of the Goodnow House State Historic Site and remain open for research services.&nbsp;Admission to the museum is free, and normal hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.

New exhibits coming to Riley County Historical Museum

The holiday season is full of cheer, but it can also bring hidden dangers for our beloved pets. From festive foods to holiday decorations, there's plenty to watch out for.

Susan Nelson, clinical professor at Kansas State University's Veterinary Health Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has some tips to keep pets safe.

"Many animal-related emergency room visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given or by accident," Nelson said. "Some foods cause upset stomachs, some are poisonous and some can cause life-threatening obstructions."

Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Ham, gravy, butter-laden potatoes and buttered veggies should be kept out of reach from pets. Skin and dark meat from turkey and fat trimmings from meat can be harmful to animals.

"Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforation of the GI tract," Nelson said. "Especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to GI obstruction. Tooth breakage from chewing on them is possible as well."

Pet owners should exercise caution when it comes to certain foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. Items to avoid include chocolate, coffee and caffeinated drinks, as well as raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks and foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder. Additionally, citrus plant stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, along with dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages, can pose serious health risks.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are secured can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and are tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to GI obstruction and/or perforations."

Food is not the only thing that could be harmful to pets this holiday season.

"Ingestion of holiday plants can cause anywhere from minor GI irritation to life-threatening toxicity," Nelson said. "Plants to keep out of reach include mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar. Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to our pets. The ASPCA contains lists of more plants that are toxic, or not, to dogs and cats."

While certain holiday plants can cause varying levels of toxicity, the decorations and wrapping materials that fill our homes can also pose significant dangers if pets try to eat them.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, with many decorations and wrapping items having the potential to cause harm if ingested," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

Holiday festivities might be fun for us but can be stressful for pets.

"Pets that are anxious around strangers or crowds should be kept in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite treat or toy," Nelson said. "Even if your pet likes company, they should still have access to a room or crate located in a quiet place where your guests won't bother them. For pets that become particularly stressed by company, speak to your veterinarian about prescribing them anxiolytics to decrease their anxiety until your company has left."

It is important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip, in case they should slip through the door and run away as guests enter and leave. Make sure microchips have the most up-to-date contact information.

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, immediately call your veterinarian, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 for advice.

Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect Friday

We are honored to represent the United States Senate at the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge alongside WWII veterans and world leaders. Over the next several days, we look forward to recognizing the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who answered the call to serve and to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
