Starting out playing in the beer tents when Country Stampede was in Manhattan, Travis Marvin has played on every stage.

Travis Marvin is an Ottawa, Kansas native, who has been performing in the Kansas City &nbsp;area and has previously toured with Aaron Lewis.

In 2021, Travis performed on the main stage at Country Stampede, for the third time.

For 2022, Travis is keeping the party going on the After Party stage.

Country Stampede continues through Saturday evening with Kid Rock performing as the final main stage act.

MANHATTAN - A special meeting of the City of Manhattan Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will be held on Monday, July 18rh at 7:00 pm at the Manhattan Fire Department Headquarters.

The meeting will be a facilitated public forum with the intention of gaining feedback on the future of parks and recreation programming.

The public forum will start with a short overview by City staff about the programming and budget for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Following the presentation, members of the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback&nbsp; regarding the presentation and the future of the Parks and Recreation Department.

There will be a 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division combined change of command/change of responsibility ceremony for 4 battalions Friday at 9 a.m. on the Cavalry Parade Field, Fort Riley.

The ceremonies will be for the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment and 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery.

Colonel Brian E. McCarthy, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team commander, will host the ceremony.

North Manhattan Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic, as will the west sidewalk between Laramie and Moro Streets.

Road work continues in Aggievile

Less than six months after starting Paragon Performance Sports is sending it's Ninja team, Team Night Shade, to Las Vegas.

Team Night Shade qualified to compete at Ultimate Ninja Athlete Association (UNAA) Ninja Warrior Worlds Competition.

Teammates are between the ages of 10-17 and include Braelynn, Caitlin, Kendall and Beth.

Team Night Shade leaves for competition on July 14th.

Paragon's Tumbling and Trampoline team, Team Valkyrie, is competing in it's second year.

The team of 5 athletes is heading to the AAU Junior Olympic games in Greensboro, North Carolina. 

Team Valkyrie is made up of athletes Siena, Lauren, Jenajiah, William, and Madelyn, ages 7-11 years old.

Team Valkyrie leaves for competition on July 25th.

Riley County Arrest Report July 12

Riley County Police Department partnered with Manhattan Fire Department, Riley County EMS and other law enforcement partners to participate in a joint training exercise.

The training scenario focused on streamlining the cooperation between agencies in the event of a large scale, active violence situation.

"Our role players, our volunteers really helped with that because as you saw, they're really good actors and besides the...the makeup and the moulage, their screams and everything like that make it so realistic that we've actually had observers tear up and some even cry because it's so realistic.” Riley County Police Department Lt. Tim Schuck says.

Media were invited to attend Tuesday's scenario at the Susan B Anthony Middle School, with additional training drills being held through the rest of the week.

“Unfortunately, there's a lot of events like...like we're exercising here occurring in the world today. Now we see in the news and that's...that's terribly unfortunate and I, like many members in the community that causes me some concern and some anxiety and so my message to the community would be, we are we are well rehearsed, well-practiced, because of exercises like this," Riley County EMS, assistant director, Josh Gering says. "So, I understand and sympathize with the feelings of anxiety and feelings of concern, but I hope they can. They can see this piece today and see us all out here working hard and they can take some modicum of safety and comfort knowing that we're out here doing these three days this week so that you know should...should the event ever arise. We will be ready to take good care of them.”&nbsp;

Crews ran through different scenarios, requiring them to make decisions on how to adjust their responses when presented with&nbsp; different incidents.

"The dedication of the first responders we have here, not only today but the next three days all the agencies we have outside agencies we have coming in just that dedication to the citizens of Manhattan. I think it reflects greatly on all the personnel that we have serving here." Manhattan Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Whitehair says.&nbsp;

“I think I want to make sure folks know is that our training this week isn't in response to the situations that have happened recently in Texas and Chicago. This is something we've been doing since 2016. And so, we continue to train and will train next year. These dates were picked and planned. Well before it ends, the incidence and so on them to know we're always trained this way regardless of what happens.” Riley County Police Department, Interim Director, Kurt Moldrup says.

Fort Riley welcomes new Garrison Commander

MANHATTAN, Kan. – When most folks think about 4-H, the ideas that typically come to mind are projects and leadership. &nbsp;

Leadership for life is an important value for the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H program</a>, which offers many opportunities for youth to grow in those skills. One of these opportunities is the Kansas State &nbsp;4-H Youth Leadership Council.&nbsp;

“The first time I heard about 4-H Youth Council was the first time I attended a state event (the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum),” said Chanae Parker, a 3-year council member from Manhattan. “I saw (Council members’) dedication to 4-H and the difference they were able to make and was inspired. I wanted to be able to give back to the organization that challenged and shaped me into the individual I was then. So, I ran for (election to) Youth Council.”&nbsp;

Youth Council members include many of the highest performing 4-Hers in the state, but they don’t reach that level right away.&nbsp;

“I started 4-H as a Cloverbud at five years old,” Parker said. “Prior to Council, I was heavily involved in my club and my county. I had served every office in my 4-H club and been an officer for our county 4-H Council. I was a county 4-H Ambassador and had attended state and regional events like Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, the Northeast Leadership Event, and Citizenship in Action. When I decided to run for Council, I spent months refining my application, developing my speech, and practicing interviewing.”&nbsp;

Once she was elected, Parker said the real work of being on Council begins.&nbsp;

“Council not only hosts events for Kansas 4-H, but provides opportunities for youth to develop into effective leaders, citizens, and servants in their communities,” she said. “This is what 4-H is all about and Council is a key piece in the growth and development of our future leaders.”&nbsp;

Parker noted that serving as chair of the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum planning committee “was one of the most challenging and impactful things I’ve done on Council.”&nbsp;

“It took months of planning and taught me a lot about leadership. As a committee, we worked extremely hard to host the best event we could, and I am so proud to say that it was a success. All of the work behind the scenes was worth it because I know we were able to make a difference for Kansas 4-Hers and inspire them to make a difference in their clubs and their communities.”&nbsp;

Beyond planning events, Council members serve as mentors -- inspiring and encouraging the next generation of leaders.&nbsp;

“As a younger 4-Her, I admired the 4-H Youth Council members for the work that they did,” Parker said. “They had already attended the events, they had learned and grown in 4-H and so easily could have decided to step out. But they didn’t. Council isn’t about growing individually; it’s about the impact you are able to make on others because of the meaningful events and&nbsp;work you are able to do.”&nbsp;

“The ability to give back to 4-H and shape the organization for others is truly inspiring to me, and the heart of what I do on Council. One of my favorite parts about state events is watching delegates take home what they learned to share with others in their counties.” &nbsp;

Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council inspires youth of all ages

RILEY COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of an accident that shut down a rural road for several hours on Monday.

Just after 9a.m., police responded to the report of an overturned semi-truck near the intersection of Fancy Creek Road and Winkler Mills Road near Randolph, according to Riley County Fire District 1.

The driver of a 2016 Peterbuilt truck with an attached livestock trailer carrying cattle lost control of the vehicle.&nbsp; It traveled down an embankment and overturned.

The driver received minor cuts and scrapes while exiting the truck and was treated on scene.

Riley County Fire District #1 responded to assist with extrication of cattle from the trailer and Riley County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) arrived on scene to monitor responders for heat-related illness. Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) was also on scene to evaluate the truck.

“This was quite an ordeal,” said RCFD #1 Deputy Chief John Martens. “There were over 60 head of cattle in the trailer when it overturned. Crews were out in the heat for about five hours using the jaws of life to get the cattle out. Unfortunately, at least 10 cows were either killed during the crash or had to be put down because of injuries. Neighbors and local farmers helped round up the cattle while we worked on the trailer.”&nbsp;

A total of 15 RCFD#1 volunteers and personnel responded to the call. RCPD’s Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Team was also on scene assisting in the location of some missing cattle.

“Today has been a great example of how people in Riley County pull together and help when needed,” said Martens.

Riley County Fire District #1 asked people to avoid the area of Winkler Mills and Fancy Creek due to a vehicle crash.

Riley County Deputy Fire Chief John Martens says a semi with cattle-hauler trailer left the roadway for an unknown reason.

The truck and trailer rolled onto its side before coming to a stop down the embankment.

No injuries were reported from the driver, however, a yet to be determined number of cattle died as a result of the crash.

The roadways remain closed while neighbors help corral the cattle into a nearby pen.

MANHATTAN - Riley County Police Department is the only department in the state to have a local Haz-Mat team.

On Monday morning, Senator Jerry Moran announced he helped secure $440,000 in funding for the Riley County Police Department to purchase a Hazardous Evidence Response Team (HERT) vehicle.

Moran as an appropriator for the Department of Justice and member of a subcommittee&nbsp; which oversees funding for law enforcement, was able to direct the funds to RCPD.

Interim Director Kurt Moldrup and Sergeant Dustin Weiszbrod both thanked Senator Moran for his support and getting the funding directed to RCPD.

"We wanted to say, on behalf of our team members, thank you, Senator Moran for securing this funding, for our vehicle. It's going to be great to have a place, as mentioned already to store the equipment and to transport our personnel to scenes." Riley County Police Department, Interim Director, Kurt Moldrup says.

RCPD's Haz-Mat team had been sharing a response vehicle with the Crime Scene Investigations (C.S.I.) team, this new vehicle will allow for quicker response time, and minimize damage to sensitive equipment.

Sen. Moran announces funding for RCPD Haz-Mat vehicle

We have turned the calendar to July, and that means different things to different people. For students and teachers July means summer is at the halfway point, and the first day of school is near. For those of us in agriculture it means haying season and watching fall crops grow. In the Farm Bureau world, July is the start of county Farm Bureau annual meetings.<br><br>County Farm Bureau meetings in Kansas are as unique as the counties themselves. They are held anytime from July until October; the only stipulation is that they have to be done in time to get the voting delegates for that county registered for the Kansas Farm Bureau annual meeting in December. The meetings vary in the type of meal served – anything from catered affairs to hotdog and hamburger feeds or even ice cream socials. Some have entertainment, others feature educational speakers while some are bare bones, business-only gatherings. Recently some counties have gone with more family friendly activities with their annual meeting tagged on at the end.<br><br>Yes, there is no cookie-cutter county Farm Bureau Annual meeting template. That is the beauty of Kansas Farm Bureau, each county organization is its own unique entity. That is what makes me proud to be a member of Kansas Farm Bureau and the Pottawatomie County Farm Bureau specifically. I have never been involved with an organization that was so grassroots driven and responsive to its members.<br><br>Every annual meeting reflects the unique personality of an individual county and the members on the board. I have seen traditions developed over many years in some counties and other counties like to mix it up with something new each year. The COVID-19 years saw a lot of change in our county annual meeting with many being held virtual, thank goodness that isn’t the case anymore. One thing that all county annual meetings share is great fellowship among the members.<br><br>That is where I want to make the plea to you. If you are a member and you have not been to one of your annual meetings, please change that this year. You should receive notice of the meeting from your respective county. Some will be a simple postcard while others will be a newsletter touting what your county has done during the year. If you have not received your notice yet or think you might have missed it, just call your local office and they will be happy to give you the details.<br><br>I hope you will consider attending, this is a good way to get your toes wet and see what your organization has to offer. I don’t know of a single county that isn’t looking for members who want to be active and this is a good way to find out what it is all about. Who knows you might at least have a great meal or some other experience?

Early school years are important to lifelong success, Wiles says&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – When it comes to helping their children achieve academic success, it sure doesn’t hurt if parents remember how to multiply fractions and diagram sentences.&nbsp;

But Kansas State University child development specialist Bradford Wiles said there is a more basic way that parents can spur their children’s growth.&nbsp;

“First and foremost,” he said, “parents need to be present with their children.”&nbsp;

“Parents are children’s first teacher (but) as they get into formal schooling, you don’t want to maintain that primary teaching role; you want that to be an in-classroom experience. But the support from the child’s family – or, the home and school congruence -- is really critical to success.”&nbsp;

Wiles describes parent involvement as an effort to understand what is happening in their children’s lives.&nbsp;

“It really starts with an environment where what happens at school is something that adults are inquisitive about; that is, they want to know what’s going on,” he said. “That includes being able to have discussions with children about what’s happening at school. Parents should be engaged with their children’s lives.”&nbsp;

Parents should consider volunteering at school activities and boards, such as PTO. They should talk to the child’s homeroom teacher regularly, as well as other school personnel such as administrators, coaches, librarians and non-homeroom teachers.&nbsp;

Wiles said: “Ask them questions like, ‘are they paying attention and doing what they’re supposed to do?’ And then involve your child in those discussions. Learn to develop a comprehensive lens that includes your own view, your child’s view and the teacher’s view in order to understand the full picture.”&nbsp;

“Success in school really does start with having an open line of communication with your child’s classroom and the school at large.”&nbsp;

Wiles said the early years of a child’s education are especially important: “A lot of children are really anxious to get older, and yet there’s a lack of appreciation for what it takes to be older and successful which are -- in my view -- the things you learn in kindergarten through sixth or seventh grade. We need to recognize that is part of the developmental process. All the things they will learn after that are built on that foundation.”&nbsp;

Wiles encourages parents to establish a “family culture” that centers around two things: “My child is important and what they’re learning is important for their future.”&nbsp;

“Even if they are telling you they are doing things they shouldn’t be doing, that is not the time to be upset, angry or disappointed,” he said.&nbsp;

“The important thing is to let them know you care about them and you’re glad they shared with you. Once you’ve had a chance to process what they’ve said, you can figure out what needs to change. But being grateful and encouraging your child to share with you is the foundation of really solid adult-child relationships through late childhood, early adolescence and all the way through to emerging adulthood.”&nbsp;

Child development expert urges parents to make time to talk with children 

The Flint Hills Discovery Center is hosting the annual National Day of the Cowboy celebration on Saturday, July 23rd.

From 10 am to 3 pm, activities centering on the Wild West will be available, along with a meet and greet with Rodeo Queens and western style photo shoot opportunities.

Activities include:<br>-Branding<br>-Bison Chip Tossing<br>-Roping

Carriage rides will be available until 1:00 pm.

'National Day of the Cowboy' coming to Flint Hills Discovery Center

<a href="https://cityofmhk.com/232/Manhattan-Fire-Department">Manhattan Fire Department </a>crews were called to the 900 block of Thurston shortly before 4:00pm Sunday afternoon for a structure fire.

The 1-story duplex at 901/903 Thurston had smoke coming from the front of the building when crews arrived.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene.

Crews remained on scene until nearly 6:30pm. Firefighters rescued two lizards from 901 Thurston.

One person with smoke inhalation refused treatment by Riley County EMS at the scene.

Estimated loss is $50,000 to the structure and $10,000 in contents.

Owner of the property is listed as Alexander Jost of Hillsboro, KS.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire damages house on Thurston Street in MHK

Riley County Fire District #1 is asking people to avoid the area of Winkler Mills and Fancy Creek due to a vehicle crash.

Road closed for hours following Crash at Winkler Mills & Fancy Creek 

In 2020, <a href="https://www.mhkbeer.com/">Manhattan Brewing Company</a> opened it's doors in the middle of an era of uncertainty, but thanks to community support, the company is continuing to grow.<br>

"The only words we can say is grateful. I mean, we're so thankful for the Manhattan community for keeping us open and trusting us...trusting in us, drinking our beers, having a good times with us." Manhattan Brewing Company, co-owner, Jake Voegeli says.<br>

Voegeli, along with Adam Krebsbach and Garrett Paulman met while working for Tallgrass Brewing Company, following the closing of the brewing company, the trio decided to open a locally focused brewery.<br>With more than 20 years experience between them, the trio continues to create craft beers and provide a welcoming atmosphere with a unique vibe.<br>

Celebrating their 2nd anniversary, the group opted for the theme, 'Super Soft 2nd Anniversary party' adding unicorns and pastel colored balloons and decor throughout the building.<br>

"That's something we wanted to do here is have a lot of fun with it. Throw the pink everywhere and rainbows...Super soft was from 'Letterkenny' and we kind of wanted to...let's just throw a really cool super soft party and have pink and &nbsp;unicorns and rainbows lower deck because we have a bunch of decorations." Voegeli says.<br>

As part of the anniversary celebration they tapped 2 unique glitter beers on Friday evening at 5:00 pm, these specialty beers were made with edible glitter.<br>

The birthday party continues throughout the weekend, celebrating two years in the Manhattan community.<br>
