The deadline to register to vote in the August primary election is fast approaching.

Eligible citizens have until Tuesday July 12th to register to vote for on the issues in the August primary.

"On July 12, is a voter registration deadline to participate in the primary election. So of course people can register to vote online or in person, but we're getting so close to that deadline. We highly recommend people print off the form and bring it to our office." Riley County Clerk, Rich Vargo says, "That is the most expeditious way that they can get it here and guarantee that they will get it registered in time because, contrary to popular belief, when someone fills out that form, they're not registered to vote or when they've mailed it. It's not until we get it in the system."

Riley County Fair Golden Clover Hunt begins!  

The Fort Riley Transition Assistance Program will host a Military Community Career Fair Thursday, July 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Avenue.

The army said that this career fair is designed for Soldiers preparing to transition out of the military, but is also open to family members, veterans and Department of the Army civilians. Local students earn Kansas State Fair Grand Drive scholarships

HERINGTON—Law enforcement authorities investigating a drive-by shooting in Herington have made an arrest.

On Wednesday,&nbsp; police were dispatched to a reported shooting at the intersection of S. B Street and Day Street in Herington, according to a media release.

 The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Travis Richardson of Abilene, confronted another subject that was walking at the intersection following a confrontation at a nearby residence. 

Richardson produced a semi-automatic pistol and fired fourteen times at the victim before fleeing the scene. According to online jail records, Richardson is being held on requested charges that include&nbsp;Criminal damage to property; Without consent value $1000 to $25,000,&nbsp;Criminal discharge of firearm; Public road/public right of way/railroad,&nbsp;Criminal discharge of firearm; Recklessly at occupied dwelling, attempted&nbsp;Murder in the 2nd degree; Intentional.

No one was hurt as a result of the shooting, although some personal property was damaged by the rounds fired in the area.&nbsp;

Police have not released details on the arrest.

MANHATTAN - On the first Tuesday of every month, the Manhattan City Commission meeting have an open public comment section, allowing members of the public to address the Commission about any topic, including those not on the agenda.

One parent, Joshua Runyan, who is concerned about the future of youth sports within the Manhattan Parks and Recreation addressed Commission members.

Runyan, a longtime Manhattan resident, addressed Commission members, explaining how youth sports within the Parks and Recreation positively impacts the kids who are not able to participate in travel sports due to a variety of reasons.

"My cost for baseball, with uniforms and everything this year was only $250, very reasonable, especially when you think of other programs in town. But not everybody can afford that, but not just affording, it's sometimes about time."

Runyan is hoping to bring awareness to the City Commissions and City officials the importance of continuing to offer youth sports programs within the Parks and Recreation Department.

"I recently just had a lunch sitting with a bunch of other citizens, there were 30 of us give or take and just kind of blew my mind that I was able to get that many people there off of a quick whim just to support Parks and Rec." Runyan says.

"Essentially Tom has special needs and a program like parks and recs really helps on all the students that don't have the ability to go on traveling, they're not gonna be able to do stuff outside of Manhattan. In Parks and Rec is important for people exactly like Tom. I learned a lot from Tom at the time, and I know that everybody else on my team did." Runyan says.

"There are a lot of other citizens that depend on a program like Parks and Rec. I'd like to come back and present what I presented to all of them just so you can see what I had brought up." Runyan says.

Runyan has submitted a request to be added to the agenda for the July 12th Manhattan Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting to give his presentation, which he presented to community members during a brainstorming meeting at the end of June.

MANHATTAN - Furniture Amnesty Day is an annual free gently used furniture exchange day.

Community members can donate gently used furniture or pick up furniture at no cost to them.

Furniture Amnesty Day is held at Manhattan's City Park in the parking lot by Miller Field.

There are no income requirements or forms to complete in order to participate.

Registration is required to participate in the scheduled timeslots of the furniture giveaway.

Registration begins at 8:00 am on Friday, July 29th, with free shopping timeslots starting at 11:00 am and goes until 4:00 pm.

Participants may choose up to 5 furniture items at no cost to them. Participants are responsible for arranging transportation for their chosen items. Delivery service will not be provided.

“August is the most common month for people in Manhattan to move,” said Ryan Courtright, assistant chief of risk reduction for the Manhattan Fire Department. “We used to see a lot of furniture abandoned at the curb every August. Since some refuse companies do not pick up those large items, we were issuing a lot of code violation notices and furniture just sat and deteriorated. Furniture Amnesty Day grew out of an idea to help solve that problem and get that furniture to people who could use it.”

-Furniture can be donated in two ways: 1) residents within Manhattan city limits can sign up online by&nbsp;5 p.m. Wednesday, July 27&nbsp;to have volunteers pick up their donated furniture at the curbside of their residence; or 2) donations can be dropped off at Miller Field in City Park from&nbsp;8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 29.

-Acceptable donations include: Sofas, couches, desks, recliners, end tables, dressers, headboards, chairs, and kitchen tables.

-Donations that will not be accepted include:&nbsp; mattresses, dishwashers, pianos, grills, refrigerators, televisions, computers, or other electronics. 

“Generally, we don’t accept anything that needs to be plugged in,” Courtright said.

Any furniture left unclaimed at&nbsp;4 p.m.&nbsp;on the day of the event will be open to the general public without registration. At&nbsp;4:30 p.m., the event will end. Any remaining pieces will be hauled away by staff and volunteers.

Volunteers are available to pick up furniture donations at the curb for anyone living within Manhattan city limits. Volunteers only will pick up a maximum of&nbsp;five&nbsp;(5) furniture items per location. Again, furniture sets such as a table and chairs still count as only one item.

Manhattan's annual 'Furniture Amnesty Day' to be held July 29

Riley County Fire District #1 crews were dispatched shortly after 11:00 pm Wednesday, to a structure fire at 13490 Fancy Creek Road, west of Randolph, Kansas.

Upon arrival, crews saw heavy smoke coming from the attic, roof vents and eaves of the home.

The fire was caused by a lightning strike and started in the attic.

Occupants of the residence exited the structure without injury.&nbsp;

Preliminary damage estimates for the structure and contents is at least $100,000.

“There was a large amount of lightning in the north part of the county last night,” said Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell. “The lightning strike at this home shorted wiring and ignited attic rafters and insulation. Thankfully, we were able to gain access to the attic from inside the home as well as through the roof to attack and extinguish the fire. We’re grateful that no one was injured and the structure is still standing.”

Riley County Fire District #1 is the largest consolidated volunteer fire department in the state with 120 volunteers and 15 fire stations throughout the county. RCFD#1 is currently accepting applications for a variety of volunteer roles.  </figure>Occupants of the residence exited the structure without injury.&nbsp;Preliminary damage estimates for the structure and contents is at least $100,000.“There was a large amount of lightning in the north part of the county last night,” said Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell. “The lightning strike at this home shorted wiring and ignited attic rafters and insulation. Thankfully, we were able to gain access to the attic from inside the home as well as through the roof to attack and extinguish the fire. We’re grateful that no one was injured and the structure is still standing.”Riley County Fire District #1 is the largest consolidated volunteer fire department in the state with 120 volunteers and 15 fire stations throughout the county. RCFD#1 is currently accepting applications for a variety of volunteer roles. Lightning strike causes fire, $100K in damage to house near Randolph

Dr. Bryan Pinkall has seen much of the world after graduating from Great Bend High School in 2003. From the Grammys to the Olympics, Pinkall continues to build upon an impressive resume. He was recently named director of Kansas State University's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

"I've had the blessing to be able to do a lot of interesting things in my life," he said. "This really wasn't on my radar until April. I feel a lot of honor given to me by my colleagues here, and the students here. I didn't really realize what that fully meant until the last few weeks. It's been special."

As director, Pinkall will be in charge of a school with approximately 500 majors and 60 full-time faculty members. The department also features one of the nation's largest marching bands, and Pinkall estimates some 4,000 students are involved in programming each year.

At 37 years old, Pinkall will be an anomaly of sorts in his new role, but he's spent much of his career in the same position.

"I've often felt that I was among the youngest in a lot of steps along the way," he said. "Sometimes that provides some difficulties. I've prided myself on my work ethic, and I think once people are able to see me and see how I work, that solves a lot of problems."

Upon graduating from Great Bend High School, Pinkall received a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Missouri, Kansas City where he was a Kauffman Scholar. He later earned a Master of Music and Bachelor of Arts from Kansas State University.

In 2014, the Topeka Capital Journal named Pinkall the Distinguished Kansan of the Year in Performing Arts. He was a national quarterfinalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award in 2018, and won the American Prize in Vocal Performance in 2020.

Pinkall earned his Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 as a member of the National Festival Chorus, and he was a featured soloist at the grand opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in 2011. That event included opera singer Placido Domingo and famed violinist Itzhak Perlman.

As a soloist and chorister with the Kansas City Chorale, Pinkall has been part of nine Grammy nominations and seven Grammy wins. Even seated towards the back, Pinkall was able to see many of the country's top stars in their natural setting.

"All the fun experiences are at the after parties," he said. "That's when you really see everyone in their element just as normal people. We're used to seeing folks on TV and their personality, but when they're behind the scenes they're just normal people. That's kind of fun."

Pinkall has also worked in the television scene as a manager of performance operations at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Opening Ceremonies in Sochi were nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one Emmy.

"You have to work with choreographers and dancers, all sorts of people," Pinkall said of his role. "It was my job to organize a lot of that. The ceremonies were divided into segments, so there were a number of people like myself and we were assigned to different parts of the show."

Pinkall spent between a month and two months on site for each Olympics, but said the viewing experience is better suited for those at home.

"It is stressful," he laughed. "It is very stressful. Since it's live and it's huge, there are always issues that come about. In reality, it's a lot better to watch it on TV than to be there in person because it's really designed to be a television event. You lose a lot of details if you're in the audience in the stadium. It's just a really interesting experience."

Pinkall's achievements go on. He helped provide free or discounted music education to more than 1,000 underprivileged children in the Kansas City area as Founder and Education Director of the Kansas City Vocal Institute. He's performed poetry and musical numbers at many of the nation's top venues, including Lincoln Hall and the Kennedy Center. Despite all that, he's most proud of being a teacher.

"I'm a people person and I love to teach," he said. "My family is entirely filled with educators. That one-to-one, you get to see into other peoples' lives and get a chance to be a part of that."

east central Kansas, where an Excessive Heat Warning remains in
place. Heat index values of 103 to 108 are expected.

A few more strong to severe thunderstorms are possible today, most
likely from late afternoon into the evening hours. Gusty winds and
small hail will again be the main hazards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hot and humid conditions are again likely this afternoon across
east central Kansas, where an Excessive Heat Warning remains in
place. Heat index values of 103 to 108 are expected.

A few more strong to severe thunderstorms are possible today, most
likely from late afternoon into the evening hours. Gusty winds and
small hail will again be the main hazards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hot conditions will exist again Thursday

Riley County Police were called out to the Westloop McDonald's around 5:30 pm when a customer reported finding an unknown, foreign substance in their food.

According to Riley County Police Department's Public Information Officer, Aaron Wintermote, the customer reported no adverse health effects.

The RCPD Hazardous Evidence Response Team (HERT) and Manhattan Fire Department HazMat Team also responded to the scene and determined the substance to be non-hazardous. The Kansas Department of Agriculture was also notified of the incident.

No additional reports have been received by RCPD, and it is believed to be an isolated event with no risk or threat to the community.

Due to the incident, the Westloop McDonald's voluntarily closed for the night to assist with the investigation and conduct internal cleaning.

This situation is still under investigation and no further information will be released at this time.

RCPD would like to thank McDonald's, Manhattan Fire Department, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture for their assistance.

MANHATTAN - The Riley County Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a missing 14-year-old boy from Manhattan.

Eric was last seen on July 2nd in the 12200 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Eric has brown eyes, black hair with blonde highlighted tips, is approximately 6' tall and weighs 170 pounds.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Tuesday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Harley Davidson driven by Jerry Wayne Tisdale, 67, Emmett, was westbound on Kansas Highway 16 just east of Wheaton Road.

The motorcycle crossed the center, struck a guardrail and the driver ejected.

EMS transported Tisdale to Stormont Vail. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Ohio tree company reports $2K in tools stolen in MHK

On Friday, July 1st around 1:00 pm, Riley County Police officers responded to the 2700 block of Eureka Terrace on the report of theft from a storage unit.

Upon arrival officers spoke with a 35-year-old male victim who reported 2-60" televisions, tow motorcycle helmets, a Craftsman lawn mower, a Shark vacuum, an air fryer and Craftsman hand tools were taken from his storage unit.

The estimated loss for this case is approximately $2,950.&nbsp;

MHK theft from storage unit ends in loss of $2.9K

RANDOLPH -Riley County Fire District #1 responded to the report of a structure fire in the 100 East Stockdale Lane in Randolph, Kansas.

When fire crews arrived on scene, the abandoned home was fully engulfed in fire.

Crews extinguished the fire and remained on scene until 3:00 am to make sure the remained contained to the initial property.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Eleven volunteer firefighters and RCFD#1 personnel responded to the scene.

The property owners are listed as Richard, Monaghan, Thomas and Mary Jack.&nbsp;

“Thanks to everyone who came out to this fire,” said Deputy Fire Chief Doug Russell. “We have a great crew of volunteers we can count on to help when they’re needed, even if the call comes in the middle of the night.”

Fire damages abandoned home in Randolph

On Tuesday afternoon, the Geary County Emergency Manager issued a statement on the Geary County Emergency Management Facebook page regarding decisions made during Friday, July 1st community events.

Several storms made their way through the Geary County area on Friday evening, which impacted outdoor events across the county.&nbsp;

Geary County Emergency Management received numerous questions regarding why one event was cancelled due to the weather, while another continued to with their performances.

Geary County Emergency Management advised both organizing committees about the impending weather based on reports from the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Organizers for each event made the decisions on how their events would or would not proceed.

Geary Co. Emergency Manager clarifies role in weekend event cancellation

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a theft involving fireworks in Manhattan.

Just after 11a.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for theft near the intersection of N. Scenic Drive and Anderson Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Fridge Fireworks and a 40-year-old man reported a mortar deck with 24 mortar fireworks, and other miscellaneous fireworks were stolen along with&nbsp;two red Academy folding wagons.

 The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,180.&nbsp;

RCPD: Suspects stole $1000 in fireworks from tent 

MANHATTAN - Around 10:00 pm Monday, July 4, 2022, officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to a report of criminal damage to property related to a domestic situation.

When officers arrived on scene, a 20-year-old female victim reported that a known 19-year-old, Isaac Bryant Mumaw, had damaged the windshield and rear passenger window of her car.

The estimated total loss from the damage is $600.

Mumaw was arrested in connection with incident for criminal damage to property, and remains confined at the Riley County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

Car damaged during domestic incident, suspect arrested

The Geary County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit responded to three separate boating incidents on Milford Lake over the holiday weekend.

The Marine Unit is comprised of Geary County Sheriff's Deputies and Junction City Fire Department EMTS/Swift Water Rescue Swimmers.

In all three incidents, the boats were disabled and taking on water, all occupants in each incident were brought to safety without further incidents.

Officials with the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/100069103994267/posts/pfbid0c4o3yoZicrHFNcPTKvJ2CGR2DCNvV1wAVGXAsKPzRkfVsyEaShdKbYk5dPkPDhmkl/?d=n">Sheriff's Office reminded lake-goers</a> to create a short checklist before putting your boat in the water to ensure the safety of all passengers.

Recommended items for the checklist include: • Making sure the boat plug is secure. • Insuring you have appropriate number of coast guard approved life jackets and make sure that they are appropriately sized for each occupant. • Insure that you have plenty of fuel. • Make sure you have an undamaged throw cushion. • Boat has a functioning whistle or horn. • Boat has a functioning fire extinguisher. • Check your kill switch to make sure it is plugged in and attached to the driver’s vest when in operation. • Map or navigation options for the waterway you are going to be on. • Cellular phone or other means of communication. If you do not have cellular phone or other means of communication, let someone know. where you will be launching and give them a rough time line of return. • Make sure that your vessel is properly registered.

Geary Co. rescuers responded to 3 boating incidents on Milford Lake

ST. GEORGE - Fire crews in Pottawatomie County were called out to a structure fire on Military Trail Road near St. George shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

The public was asked to avoid the area while crews got the fire under control.

The initial report included a detached garage being on fire, while enroute to the scene, crews were alerted that the fire had spread to the residence.

Upon arrival, law enforcement located all occupants, who had exited the structure safely.
