LOCATED SAFE: 8-year-old Manhattan girl found

MANHATTAN - Sunset Zoo in Manhattan honored muralist, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/artmercenary/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D">Phyllis Pease</a>, who painted the first mural on City of Manhattan property in the zoo's Expedition Asia exhibit.

The mural depicts scenes to reflect the history of how the zoo was started as a WPA(Works Progress Administration) project.

The WPA was started in 1935 as one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs providing jobs during the Great Depression. The WPA funded building programs geared towards community and public improvements.

Originally, the zoo's land was intended for an expansion of the Sunset Cemetery, but the ground was determined to be too rocky for cemetery use.

The mural incorporates the original animals along with current animals living at the zoo.&nbsp;

The mural was commissioned by long-time zoo support Mimi Balderson, who asked for the mural to depict the history of the zoo and the WPA aspect as well, in memory of Chuck Jackson, longtime Sunset Zoo advocate and supporter.

"It's, it's amazing, I'm so glad...I'm lucky that they didn't like cast a net out wide, because I'm sure there's other people...I've done art outside, and murals outside, but nothing quite this large." muralist, Phyllis Pease says.

National weather service issues heat advisory

DICKINSON COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Thursday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by Christian A. Stevens, 20, Wakefield, was eastbound on Kansas 18.

The driver failed to yield while making a left turn onto the Kansas 15 Northbound junction. The Chevy struck a 2018 Chevy Traverse driven by Andrea C. Ewers, 55, Abilene.

EMS transported Ewers to an area hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stevens was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Lawmakers took a step last week towards taking back the nation’s highest award for valor from Army troops who perpetrated one of the most infamous Native American massacres in U.S. history.

The legislation to revoke the medals passed the House of Representatives as an amendment to the fiscal 2023 defense policy bill. Similar attempts have made it this far before, however, only to be stymied during compromises between the House and Senate versions of the bill.

Some 20 soldiers received the Medal of Honor following the Dec. 29, 1890, massacre near Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, where troops from the 7th Cavalry and accompanying artillery units killed hundreds of Lakota men, women and children.

The 7th Cavalry&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_Cavalry_Regiment">was organized at Fort Riley in Kansas</a>&nbsp;in 1866.

The U.S. troops had nearly completed confiscating weapons from a Lakota encampment when a struggle with a reportedly deaf man sparked a chaotic one-sided firefight.

When the smoke cleared, dozens of cavalry troopers were wounded or killed by friendly fire — likely from their artillery — and hundreds of Lakota were dead.

Rep. Kaialiʻi Kahele, D-Hawaii, was the legislation’s primary sponsor, though other members of Congress, like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Rep. Reuben Gallego, D-Ariz., have pushed for similar legislation in the past. Kahele is a Native Hawaiian.

Dubbed the “Remove the Stain Act,” the legislation’s advocates, which include more than a dozen Native American tribes and groups, say it’s a long-overdue step to right a historical wrong.

“As Congress continues to consider the FY23 NDAA, the most important defense legislative vehicle that is debated each year, we must remind ourselves of the uncomfortable truth that this land – the United States – was taken from indigenous peoples,” said Kahele in a press release. “Although we can never undo the irreparable damage inflicted on indigenous peoples, we can do our best to respect their lands, empower our communities and acknowledge the truth behind our shared history.”

The Senate is yet to pass its version of the defense policy bill, and the two houses of Congress will have to agree on a compromise version of the legislation. If Kahele’s amendment survives the compromise process, it will mark the success of a decades-long effort from Native American advocacy groups and other members of Congress.

Congress&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/50a20c85ffbac9a6e627b577abc8715a" target="_blank">officially apologized</a>&nbsp;for the massacre in 1990, near its 100th anniversary, but did not rescind the medals then.

But that’s far from certain. Previously, the act passed as part of the House’s fiscal 2022 defense policy bill, but did not make it into the final compromise legislation.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Thanks to the generosity of K-Staters from across the country, K-State Athletics and the Ahearn Fund announced today multiple fundraising records for FY22 related to overall and annual giving.&nbsp;

Overall pledges and cash gifts to the department during the 2022 fiscal year totaled $58.9 million, of which $20.4 million was designated for the Ahearn Fund annual giving program and surpassing its budgeted goal previous record of $18.9 Million in FY19.&nbsp; Included in the $20.4 million in annual giving was a department record $801,000 raised during the Powercat Auction.&nbsp; The department also received $42.6 million in cash giving, marking only the third time in history it has eclipsed the $40 million mark.

“We are grateful for the loyalty and dedication of the K-State Family as we continue to provide the best academic and athletic experience for our student-athletes to compete in the classroom and for Big 12 Championships,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said.&nbsp; “The support of our fans through ticket sales and Ahearn Fund gifts continue to be the lifeblood of our department, and their support is critical as we continue to enhance our programs.”&nbsp;

K-State’s Ahearn Fund Closes Out Record-Breaking Year

MANHATTAN - Shortly after 8:30 pm Wednesday evening, Riley County Police Department was called to a residence in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place.

A resident reported she had found a toilet paper roll with a fuse sticking out of it on her back porch several days ago, and brought it inside.

The resident did not contact RCPD until Wednesday evening regarding the item, and the Bomb Team was activated to investigate the possible homemade explosive device.

The Bomb Team cleared the scene with no threat to residents in the area.&nbsp;

The incident remains under investigation and a report of criminal use of explosives has been filed.

RCPD says it appears that the apparatus was made intentionally.

According to RCPD, there is no reason to believe there is any threat to the public with this incident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Mercury Sable driven by 24-year-old Aaron M. Smith of&nbsp; Junction City was eastbound on Interstate 70 at Grandview Plaza.

The driver intentionally drove across the median into westbound traffic. The car then vaulted from the north shoulder into a tree line on the north side and rolled.

EMS transported Smith to Geary County Community Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Layne currently has an active warrant for aggravated violation of registration act/violation of registration act x11.

OTTAWA COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Wednesday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford Focus driven by&nbsp; Nancy K. Gisi, 56, Miltonvale, was&nbsp;westbound on Sunset Road at U.S. 81 

The driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic. A northbound 2004 Chevy Suburban driven by Curtis J. Bethea II, 35, Newton, struck the Ford.

&nbsp;Both vehicles came to rest in the northbound passing lane of U.S. 81.

EMS transported Gisi, Bethea and a passenger in the Ford Jennifer L. Gavin, 30, Miltonvale, to Salina Regional Health Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man, 2 women hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

A 24 year old Junction City woman was taken to the hospital following a crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Riley County Police Department were called to the intersection of South 10th Street and Yuma Street around 4:45 pm, on the report of a two vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, officers found a 2011 Ford Fusion, driven by 24-year-old, Ashely Gallio of Junction City, had entered the intersection and was hit by a 2011 Dodge Ram, driven by 79-year-old David McNamara.

Gallio was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan for treatment of a head injury.

Junction City woman injured in MHK crash on Tuesday afternoon

Around 10:45 am on Tuesday, July 19th officers were called to Wal-Mart in Manhattan for an earlier burglary to be reported.

Officers were informed that around 4:30 am on Tuesday, an unknown suspect pried the doors open to the building and attempted to steal cans of Can Air.

The suspect then got into an altercation with an employee before running away from the business.

The estimated loss with this is $30.00.&nbsp;

Over the weekend, Be Able Community received the gift of a new fence being installed on the south side of the property, giving them more privacy and security to the property.

Little Apple Post's Becky Goff talked with Scott Voos, executive director of Be Able community about the new fence installed over the weekend.

Becky-"All right so this is a brand new fence you're at be able to tell us a little bit about what went into getting this new fence this weekend for you guys."

Scott-"So we've, we've lived with this property for about one year now. And we bought we bought this property as is, it was an old pawn shop. And what we've done is slowly tried to turn it into our homes. And if you think of our home environment, you all you often need some type of security regarding visibility, and that's where this came into play. It's taken a while to come through as being a nonprofit, we don't have quick means that something like this, this is about a $3,000 project. So that's why it's taken a while, but we were blessed to have a local community, Rock Hills Church, phenomenal church community. They have a 'Serve Day' every year, once once per year, and they chose our site. For this year. They came down here and asked, What do you need, what can we do for your community? And we walked around the property and I pointed this direction. I said we really need a fence, we need to both protect our neighbor's visibility and give them that sense of privacy, but also from, from the foot traffic coming in here. There we needed some type of preventative measures for our property." 

Becky-"So this is kind of adding a little bit of privacy but also a little bit more security for the area, correct?"

Becky-"Anything else coming up for us that we need to know about?"

Scott-"Yeah, definitely we are just we're so close to initiating phase one of our facility improvement and what that means basically implementing our laundry facilities on site right here, where we will open up the doors to the neighbors so they have the ability to clean up wash their clothes. And what we're thinking is that'll help them feel better. We're really excited about that. We are probably one month away."

For 19 years, Riley County EMS, Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Police Department have participated in a fun competition during the 'Battle of the Badges' blood drive.

The goal for the 2022 'Battle of the Badges' blood drive was 243 pints, but donations fell short of that goal at 202 pints.

Representatives of Riley County EMS, Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Police Department agree that the real winners are the people who receive the lifesaving blood donations.

Final tally of the public votes for favorite department are as follows: - Riley County Police Department - 47 votes - Riley County EMS - 58 votes - Manhattan Fire Department - 63 votes

American Red Cross serving Kansas says several ballots were cast with all 3 agencies circled, those ballots were counted as one vote for each agency.

A 26-year-old male reported a storage unit was broken into, and an Ultra 395 PCE paint sprayer and hose were stolen.&nbsp;

Highland Ridge and the 26-year-old male are both listed as victims on the police report.

The estimated total loss for this case is approximately $2,500.&nbsp;

Paint sprayer, hose stolen from storage unit at W. Manhattan apartment complex

Battle of the Badges is a friendly competition between the Riley County EMS, Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County Police Department.

Representatives of each group work to convince community members to vote for their respective department when they arrive to donate blood.

"It's super important for the community members to get out and get blood around the fact that we kind of like to give them units like this. So it's not uncommon for your average car accident victim to require upwards of 100 units of blood throughout the duration of their care. A single donation today will account for about three units. So it goes a long way." Riley County EMS, assistant director, Josh Gering says.

"Essentially it helps save lives and you know, this is something that's been going on for a long time. Here in Riley County. This is something that needs department takes very serious and we want to support it the best way we know how." Riley County Police Department, Patrol Division, Lt. Daryl Ascher says.

The departments like to have fun and use different tactics to try to convince donors to vote for their departments.

"Or if you vote fire. We have a bunch of wonderful prizes, and we'd like to keep the winning tradition alive of our name being on the trophy the most." Manhattan Fire Department, Captain Drew Taylor says.

"I think the fire department has some really cool keychains that's, that's, that's great. We'd be happy to hold the door for you. We have a homegrown organic EMS coupon book that we'd love to show to you. And if you come out here and make a donation. I think Drew and I can both agree that you probably you'll notice lacking, absent from the interview days as law enforcement. Your decision is made there are trade offs but also the real winners of the day are the people that receive these donations in hospitals across Kansas. So keep that in mind. It's a very meaningful donation goes a long way. And we're both just happy to be here." Gering says.

Residents packed the meeting room at the Manhattan Fire Department Headquarters ready to address the Parks and Rec Advisory Board about concerns they have for the department.

Multiple parents addressed board members and the crowd about concerns they have for the future of youth in the Manhattan area, if Parks and Rec would no longer offer youth sports programs.

City Manager Ron Fehr and Interim Assistant Director Wyatt Thompson agreed that something needs to be done to address the concerns of the parents.

Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members were all in agreement that Parks and Recreation Programming needs to be kept and revitalized.

WOODSON COUNTY—A Kansas woman died and another was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Monday in Woodson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Ranger driven by Sandra E. Campbell, 54, Yates Center, was southbound on U.S. 75 five miles north of U.S. 54.

The pickup and the oversized load of a northbound 2012 Kenworth Semi driven by William M. Allen, 56, Manhattan, collided. The impact sent the pickup into a counter-clockwise rotation. 

The Ford crossed the centerline into the northbound lanes and collided with a northbound 2016 Ram driven by Juda A. Lake, 69, Manhattan.&nbsp; The Ford overturned in the east ditch. The Dodge came to rest in the northbound lane facing east.

Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.&nbsp; EMS transported Lake to Stormont Vail. Allen was not injured.

Geary County Sheriff's authorities said Monday afternoon that they have arrested Cameron Lawson, Fort Riley, in connection with the death of his wife, Enfinnity Hayes Lawson, on Oct. 3rd, 2021.

The Sheriff's Department confirmed Cameron Lawson was arrested on a Geary County District Court warrant issued for his arrest and that charged him with First Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder.&nbsp; Sheriff Dan Jackson noted that there was an "extensive investigation,&nbsp; involved numerous agencies because it was difficult.&nbsp; He was a suspect for quite some time in the case but it took time to get to the point where it was time to make an arrest."

Enfinnity Hayes Lawson, 22, Fort Riley, was identified by authorities as the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred Oct. 3, 2021&nbsp; at the Milford State Park Group Shelter. At the time authorities were told that the victim was approached by a man described as 6'1 or taller dressed in all black who approached the victim and her husband and attempted to rob the couple at gun point. There was a gun shot and she fell to the ground. She was driven to Geary Community Hospital by her husband but later died of her injuries.

The Sheriff's Office along with the Army Criminal Investigations Division arrested Cameron Lawson at the Sheriff's Office. He is being held at the Geary County Detention Center. His bond has been set at one million dollars.

The S-O thanked the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigations, Wichita Police Department and Army Criminal Investigations Division for their assistance in the case.

Authorities report an arrest in the Enfinnity Hayes Lawson homicide case

Just after 5 p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault and domestic battery in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Officers listed a 39-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man as both the victims and suspects.

It was reported the woman pulled a knife on the man and punched him in the chest. The male battered the woman.

Police arrested Stephanie Thornburg, 39, of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated assault and domestic battery. She was in custody early Monday at the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $10,000, according to the RCPD Activity report.

Sunset Zoo will honor muralist, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/artmercenary/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D">Phyllis Pease</a>, who painted the newest mural in Exhibition Asia.

The mural depicts the building of Sunset Zoo, on stone panels reaching more than 16 feet tall.&nbsp;

Sunset Zoo's lower tier was built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), many of the columns and pillars from the original build were incorporated into the Exhibition Asia exhibits.

There are animals within the mural that were among the first at the Sunset Zoo, and some of the current animals are included as well.

The mural was funded by a private donor who wanted the story of the Sunset Zoo to be told in an artistic way.

Sunset Zoo was founded in 1933 in Manhattan, Kansas. As part of the New Deal Program, the Works Progress Administration helped build large portions of the Zoo from 1935- 1941.

"You've seen&nbsp;a lot of murals around town and this is one that will tell the history of how the zoo was built. So it was built with the WPA project back in the '30s and so it depicts that along with a lot of animals integrated with mural." Sunset Zoo, communications and marketing director, Melissa Kirkwood says.

The public is invited to come to see the mural Wednesday, July 20, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m, during a come-and-go reception at Sunset Zoo.

It’s ironic how I checked my weather app multiple times daily as we harvested wheat in June. We wanted to get the crop out of the fields before the summer storms rolled in, which always offers the potential of damaging hail or winds and could put harvest on hold while things would need to dry up.&nbsp; &nbsp; Now that harvest is over, I check my weather app multiple times daily to see if there is a small chance of rain or lower temperatures in the July forecast. &nbsp; No matter the number of times I tap on the weather app on my phone, no matter what 10-day forecast I look at, and no matter who the meteorologist is on the television, the triple digits have not budged, and I’ve accepted that we’re in for an excessively hot, dry spell. &nbsp; The crops currently growing on our farm are on a combination of dryland and irrigated acres. The sorghum, corn and soybeans growing on our dryland acres will soon show how much they can truly tolerate drought. The crops on our irrigated acres will also show their heat tolerance.&nbsp; &nbsp; While I am concerned for the crops that will not see a break in hot, dry temperatures as they attempt to grow, I’m incredibly concerned about the animals and the people. &nbsp; While there will be many people who will seek refuge in air-conditioned environments, farmers and ranchers will continue to be out in the elements ensuring their livestock have plenty of water and the irrigation systems are maintained and continue to run.&nbsp;They will also be out in these elements when things go down and need fixed.&nbsp; &nbsp; Early in my marriage I remember spending a couple very long, hot days helping my husband and father-in-law repair an irrigation well in triple-digit heat. While we made sure to stay hydrated, the heat was oppressive. It had a toll on my body, and it took me a number of days to “get back to normal.” &nbsp; Aside from the continued work farmers and ranchers will be doing on their operations during this heat, youth fairs are right around the corner. As a kid, I always looked forward to taking my cattle to the summer fair.&nbsp; &nbsp; It was fun to live in the barns for a few days with my friends during fair time. We’d sit and play cards on our showboxes while our cattle rested with misters and industrial fans pointed on them. There was always an endless supply of ice-cold drinks in cans and pouches stored in large coolers nearby. The random pop-up water fights in the wash racks in the evenings after the animals had been fed, watered and tied out for the night was also guaranteed. &nbsp; While I hope the kids enjoy their fair experiences this year, I know they will be working extra hard to keep their livestock hydrated and cooled while they also spend their days in this heat. &nbsp; During this heat spell, it is my hope that your loved ones, co-workers and employees are staying hydrated. Keep extra water on hand – including in your vehicles. Pace yourself and know when it's time to take a break and then take it. Monitor those who spend extra time outdoors and offer grace to those who come home at night exhausted from the heat while caring for the crops and livestock.&nbsp; &nbsp; This season shall pass; but while we’re living in it, keep track of others and yourself.&nbsp;
