Just after 2p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;filed a report of theft in the 1300 block of Hudson Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; A 73-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole money during a meeting to purchase items for sale. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $9,000. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Veterans Day included a parade in Manhattan

A Hutchinson-based nonprofit is making a statewide impact by ensuring that no Kansas veteran faces hardship alone. KS4Vets, founded to bridge the gap between veterans in need and the resources available to them, offers assistance ranging from rent and utilities to groceries, ramps, and transportation.

“We help any veteran who has a need,” said Curtis Jeffries, the treasurer for KS4Vets. “We’re also a place where people who aren’t veterans can come and help veterans. Whether that’s financial help, volunteering, or simply connecting someone to the right resources, that’s what we’re here for.”

KS4Vets’ services cover just about any urgent need a veteran might face — paying rent, keeping the lights on. “If there’s a way for us to help, then we will,” added Danielle Stifler, KS4Vets President. “We’ve helped with groceries, gas, ramps for accessibility — you name it.”

The group also serves as a connector between veterans and other service organizations, such as the VA, Red Cross, and Salvation Army. “We kind of look at ourselves like the hub of a wheel,” Jeffries said. “We have spokes going in all directions. If a veteran calls us, we can look through our network and find someone who can help.”

Community Partnerships and Volunteers&nbsp;

KS4Vets works closely with local partners, including the VFW and American Legion, to coordinate community events and special recognitions. Recently, the group helped arrange a color guard ceremony at a local football game to honor a veteran.

For veterans facing homelessness, the organization steps in to provide temporary housing and connections to VA housing programs. “Homeless veterans exist even locally,” Stifler noted. “We’ve helped cover hotel stays until they can get into the right program.”

Community members can support KS4Vets in several easy ways. The group collects aluminum cans for recycling and participates in the Dillons Community Rewards Program, where shoppers can direct a percentage of their purchases to benefit veterans.

Businesses and individuals can also sponsor specific projects, such as building wheelchair ramps or providing transportation. Volunteers — including contractors — are always welcome to join in hands-on projects.

&nbsp;KS4Vets meets the second Friday of every month, featuring guest speakers who share information about veteran resources and programs. Meetings are open to the public and include both in-person and virtual participation.

“If you show up in person, we’ll feed you,” Jeffries said with a laugh. “And if you can’t make it, we livestream on Facebook and offer a Zoom link.”

KS4Vets extends helping hand to veterans across Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Veterans Day is celebrated across the country, one Kansas-based organization continues to honor those who served by giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the memorials built in their honor.

Mike Van Campen, president of Kansas Honor Flight, joined us to share the mission behind the program — a mission that has brought nearly 5,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., since 2012.

“We started Kansas Honor Flight in 2012 after a previous hub in Great Bend closed,” Van Campen said. “Several of us wanted to continue the mission — and 105 flights later, we’ve now taken just under 5,000 veterans to see their memorials.”

The flights — entirely free for veterans — are made possible through donations from individuals, community groups, and schools across Kansas. The organization operates without any state or federal funding.

“The money simply comes from a grateful public,” Van Campen said. “Churches, American Legion posts, schools — it’s incredible how many students and organizations step up to help our veterans make this trip.”

Each flight follows a carefully organized three-day itinerary. Veterans and their guardians depart Wichita on a Monday and fly to Baltimore, where they visit Fort McHenry before touring the nation’s capital.

Tuesday is a full day of remembrance, visiting the World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Air Force, and Navy memorials, as well as the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

“We apply for permission to hold a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington for each bus,” Van Campen said. “Twelve veterans per flight get to take part in that very special moment — it’s something they’ll never forget.”

The wreaths, he noted, are handmade by one of his high school classmates who crafts them from grapevines grown on his vineyard near Baltimore.

For many veterans — particularly from World War II and Korea — the Honor Flight experience opens the door to conversations their families have never heard before.

“Their kids tell us, ‘Dad never talked about his service until this trip,’” Van Campen shared. “These men and women came home, took off their uniforms, and went back to work. But on these flights, surrounded by fellow veterans, they finally start to share their stories.”

Guardians and Volunteers Make It Possible

Veterans who need assistance are paired with a guardian, someone who ensures their comfort and safety throughout the trip. Guardians — often a child, grandchild, or volunteer — pay their own way, contributing $900 to cover airfare, lodging, and meals. Veterans travel completely free.

“We’ve even had volunteers who’ve gone seven or eight times,” Van Campen said. “They’ll take off work, pay their way, and help a total stranger — just because they want to give back.”

Kansas Honor Flight operates four flights per year — typically in May, June, August, September, and October — carrying around 95 veterans per trip. The waiting list is currently about a year, meaning those who apply now will likely travel in 2026.

Kansas Honor Flight marks 105 journeys honoring 5K veterans

WABAUNSEE COUNTY— Two people died in an accident just before 11:30a.m. Monday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by Cheryl A. Martin, 63, Junction City,&nbsp;was eastbound on Interstate 70 at McFarland.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Jeep drifted into the median, struck a culvert and rolled. A 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by Robert Arnold, 53, Hays was entering the Interstate from an entrance ramp and struck the Jeep.

Martin and a passenger Perry A. Martin, 65, Junction City, were prononced dead at the scene and were transported Forensic Medical. Arnold was not injured.&nbsp; Perry Martin was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Couple from Junction City killed in crash on Interstate 70

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced that the State of Kansas and the Republic of Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes reciprocal driver’s license recognition between the two jurisdictions. The shared agreement allows Korean nationals residing in Kansas to exchange their Korean driver’s license for Kansas credentials — and will facilitate a similar process for Kansans living in Korea, through mutual recognition of licensing standards.

“Kansas is a well-known destination for international travelers, students and professionals — and our shared understanding, goals and vision for economic development has made our working relationship with Korea an important component of the progress happening across the state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The signed agreement is testament to Kansas’ commitment to sustaining this mutually beneficial partnership and growing the Kansas economy through Korean investment.”

Under the MOU, both Kansas and the Republic of Korea agreed to recognize driver’s licenses from either jurisdiction — and streamline the exchange process. While Kansas law allows Korean citizens to drive with a valid Korean license for a limited time — the new agreement simplifies credential exchange and reduces administrative barriers for long-term residents.

“Through this memorandum, we’re able to enhance mobility, livability and convenience for our residents, students and professionals who live and work in both Kansas and Korea,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “It reflects the strong and growing partnership between Kansas and the Republic of Korea — one that is built on collaboration, cultural exchange, shared values and mutual economic prosperity.”

Governor Kelly and Kansas Department of Revenue Secretary Mark Burghart signed the agreement on behalf of the State of Kansas, with Director General Ho Seung Kim of the National Police Agency signing on behalf of the Republic of Korea. The signing ceremony took place at the Governor’s Office during the official visit of the Korean delegation.

“The memorandum between Kansas and the Republic of Korea demonstrates the proactive and comprehensive approach the State of Kansas takes with our business partners,”&nbsp;Secretary of Revenue Mark Burghart said. “We appreciate the National Police Agency of Korea for recognizing the strength of Kansas law and providing a reciprocal exchange between our citizens and the Republic of Korea. By fostering this important trade relationship, we open up valuable new opportunities between our two jurisdictions for the long term.”

Korea is among Kansas’ most important global partners, with strong ties in trade, investment and education. The new driver’s license reciprocity agreement will continue to strengthen these bonds and improve the quality of life for residents in both regions.

"On the occasion of the mutual recognition of driver’s license exchange between the National Police Agency of the Republic of Korea and the Department of Revenue of the State of Kansas,"&nbsp;Consul General Junghan Kim from the Korean Consulate in Chicago said. Currently, more than 20 states in the U.S. have similar agreements with Korea, reflecting the close and longstanding relationship between the two countries.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that they will host a groundbreaking event to highlight the beginning of the I-70/K-18 interchange improvement project in Geary County. It will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Geary County Fire Station Four at 11096 Barr Road.

&nbsp;The I-70/K-18 $27.5 million interchange project will update the existing interchange, reconfigure the Boller Road intersection and construct a new flyover bridge as well as a 2-mile auxiliary lane on eastbound I-70.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

As Kansans brace for frigid temperatures this weekend, safety experts and local officials are urging residents to take precautions when heating their homes. With house fires spiking during the coldest months of the year, knowing how to safely use space heaters, fireplaces, and furnaces can be the difference between comfort and catastrophe.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the U.S., with space heaters responsible for the majority of incidents. The American Red Cross of South Central and Southeast Kansas reports that home fire responses are 30% higher during cold weather than during the rest of the year.

“Too often we see preventable tragedies happen when families try to stay warm,” said Shannon Wedge, Executive Director of the regional Red Cross. “Simple steps like keeping flammable items three feet away from heat sources and testing smoke alarms can save lives.”

To reduce the risk of fire, officials recommend these guidelines:

In addition to safe heating practices, it is recommended to test smoke alarms monthly and practice a two-minute home escape plan — the average amount of time a family may have to get out of a burning home.&nbsp;

Families who cannot afford smoke alarms or who are unable to install them can contact their local Red Cross office for help.

Home Fire Campaign Continues Saving Lives

Since 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has partnered with communities nationwide to install free smoke alarms, create fire escape plans, and educate residents on fire safety. The campaign has been credited with saving over 2,500 lives so far.

“Preparing now can make all the difference,” Wedge said. “We encourage families to take action before the temperatures drop — your safety depends on it.”

Long range transportation plan

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged sex crimes.

Just after 2p.m. Thursday, police arrested Kevin Brown, 42, of Manhattan, on requested charges that include lewd and lascivious acts; four counts of exposing sex organs to another under the age of 16 and three counts of exposing sex organs to another over the age of 16. A 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl were listed as the victims, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Brown is being held on a $41,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new financial crimes in Manhattan.

On Tuesday, officers filed a report of financial crimes that occurred on June 15, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. Beto’s Meat Market, 612 Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan reported a known individual unlawfully used a credit card at the business. 

On Tuesday, police arrested Tiffany Fernandez, 43, of Manhattan, on requested charges of burglary, theft of property or services and criminal use of a financial card. On Tuesday, police arrested Tiffany Fernandez, 43, of Manhattan, on requested charges of burglary, theft of property or services and criminal use of a financial card. A black 2014 Hyundai driven by Lucas Burleson, 21, Abilene was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of the Interstate 135 exit, according to Sheriff Roger Soldan.

The Hyundai rear-ended a gray 2009 Ford Escape driven by Theresa Bishop, 56 of Salina.

After impact, the Hyundai traveled off the road into a field and caught fire. Saline County Rural Fire District 5 quickly extinguished the fire.&nbsp; EMS transported Burleson to Salina Regional Health Center for a leg injury. according to Soldan. Bishop was not injured. There were no passengers in the vehicles.&nbsp;Burleson was cited for Following Too Close and Unsafe Speed, according to Soldan.
