Darcy Kump has won the girls division of Hoop Shoot hitting 3 out of 7 free throws. The finals of the girls competition in the 2025 Hoop Holler N’ Shoot free throw shooting contest were held during half time of Tuesday’s KSU women’s basketball game. 

Participants earned their way into the finals via shoot offs conducted at Manhattan area elementary schools among 5th grade students. Over 550 students participated in the competition. 

The winners and the schools they represent are as follows:  1st  2nd  3rd  Darcy Kump, Theodore Roosevelt – hitting 3 out of 7 Jacqui Crow, Flint Hills Christian – hitting 3 out of 7 Milan Williams, Woodrow Wilson – hitting 1 out of 7. A shoot-off determined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Prizes were awarded to all finalists including&nbsp; a plaque and a K-State coaches autographed Hoop Holler N’Shoot t-shirt. 

This is the 27th Anniversary of Hoop Holler N’ Shoot, during that time over 16,000 5th graders have participated in the program.&nbsp;

Hoop Holler N’ Shoot is a free throw contest for 5th graders in the Manhattan area schools. A boy and girl champion is determined at each school. The grade school champions move on to semi-finals and finals at Kansas State University basketball games. Participating sponsors are Manhattan Optimist Club, KS StateBank, McDonalds, Manhattan-Ogden USD 383, Manhattan Parks and Recreation, K-State Bands, Q-Country 103.5, and Power Hits 97.5.

Girls Hoop Holler n' Shoot contest champion

MANHATTAN — The Thanksgiving holiday brings family, food and festivities — but it can also bring hidden hazards for pets. As kitchens fill with tempting aromas and guests come and go, Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian at Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>, is reminding pet owners to keep safety in mind during celebrations.

"Many Thanksgiving foods and decorations can pose serious risks to pets if ingested or mishandled," Nelson said.

Keep bones out of reach and do not intentionally feed bones to your pets. Bones can cause tooth damage, become a choking hazard, or lead to gastrointestinal obstructions or perforations, Nelson said. Ingesting corncobs can also result in fatal gastrointestinal complications.

When preparing food, do not feed any raw meat scraps to your pet, as these can potentially make your pet — as well as people living or interacting with them — sick.

"There are other things you can feed your pet instead of fatty foods," Nelson said. "Gravy, dark meat, ham, butter and meat drippings can lead to gastrointestinal upset and, in some cases, fatal pancreatitis. As an alternative, offer vegetables not cooked in butter, chopped apples, plain pumpkin or sweet potatoes."

Raw dough can cause bloating and alcohol poisoning. Garlic, onion, leeks and chives — often used in dressings and gravies — can destroy red blood cells in pets if ingested.

"There are a number of common foods and beverages that could be toxic to your pet if ingested," Nelson said. "Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, currants, macadamia nuts, artificial sweeteners like xylitol, and alcoholic and caffeinated beverages out of reach."

If possible, Nelson suggests&nbsp;&nbsp;using baby gates or other barriers to block your pet's access to the kitchen or food preparation areas to prevent them from getting into unsupervised food. Make sure garbage is placed in closed, pet-proof containers and kept out of reach.

Be sure to keep baking twine and foil out of reach and in the garbage as well, as they can also cause GI obstruction, Nelson said, and the lingering scent of food on them makes them a temptation for your pet.

"When decorating your home, be mindful of things that could be harmful to pets," Nelson said. "Consider using battery-operated candles, as burning candles pose a risk of burns to your pet and, if tipped over, could lead to a house fire."

If decorating with floral arrangements, be aware of what flowers are included. Lilies can be deadly to cats and harmful to dogs, depending on the species, Nelson said. Any part of the lily — including pollen — is toxic to cats, she said.

"It's also important to know if guests make your pet nervous," Nelson said. "If they do, put the pet in a closed room away from guests with something to distract them, such as a toy or food puzzle. Be sure to watch the doors as guests arrive and leave so your pet doesn't escape and become lost."

Some pets may need anxiety medication while guests are visiting, so Nelson suggests speaking with your veterinarian for the best recommendations. It's also a good idea to have your pet microchipped and include ID tags on their collar in case they wander off. Make sure your contact information is up to date.

K-State veterinarian shares Thanksgiving pet safety reminders

There have been multiple successful economic development&nbsp; projects in Manhattan in 2025. Jason Smith, Chamber of Commerce President / CEO reported this week to the City Commission that the 10 projects added 544 new jobs and $46 million in new investment. "Only one of these local projects received job incentives or tax abatements.

Three of the new projects produced 421 of the jobs. They included PTMW, Amazon, Torgenson Electric and in Partnership with Wamego, Solar Turbines. The other six projects involved expansions.

Smith explained that new construction will generate an estimated $600,000 in new property taxes in year one. Annual property tax revenues will be over $2 million per year..

New employees will generate an estimated $7 million in retail sales producing approximately $150,000 annually in sales tax revenues.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged identity theft crimes reported on July 27, and have made an arrest.

On Tuesday, David DeJesus Roman, 28, of Ogden, was arrested&nbsp; on seven requested charges of computer unlawful acts, six counts of criminal use of a financial card and one count of theft of property of services. DeJesus Roman is being held on a bond of $28,000.

Riley County man accused of identity theft crimes

RILEY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 7p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

A 2014 Ford Focus driven by Randy Welter, 71, of Manhattan, had failed to yield on a left turn at Hayes Drive and McCall Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 2015 Chrysler 200 driven by Callen Barta, 19, of Manhattan, struck the Ford.&nbsp; The Chrysler then ran into a 2016 Toyota Corolla driven by Jackson West, 18, Manhattan, while trying to stop.

EMS transported Welter and his passenger, Teresa Frazier, 65, of Manhattan, to Via Christi for treatment. Welter was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way.

RILEY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 7p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.A 2014 Ford Focus driven by Randy Welter, 71, of Manhattan, had failed to yield on a left turn at Hayes Drive and McCall Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.A 2015 Chrysler 200 driven by Callen Barta, 19, of Manhattan, struck the Ford.&nbsp; The Chrysler then ran into a 2016 Toyota Corolla driven by Jackson West, 18, Manhattan, while trying to stop.EMS transported Welter and his passenger, Teresa Frazier, 65, of Manhattan, to Via Christi for treatment. Welter was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. -&nbsp;Susan Boller, a para educator at Junction City Middle School, recently had her dreams come true with the publishing of her first book titled, Special: Has Superpowers.

“Becoming a published author has been such a special experience for me. It means more than just having a book out; it means using my voice to inspire others, especially children, to embrace themselves and others with love. It’s my hope that my stories bring comfort, courage and joy to families everywhere,” said Boller.Boller, who has worked at Lincoln Elementary, Junction City High School and JCMS during her tenure in USD 475, began her book journey by wanting to share a message of acceptance, kindness and inner strength through a character named Special, a little girl who discovers that the things that set her apart are actually the very things that make her strong. 

Boller wanted kids to know that who they are is enough and that their differences are something to celebrate, so Special is not only about a little girl who has a disability, but also a beautiful gift. What is that gift? Well, she can sense people’s feelings and chooses to see her differences as her superpower.“The idea for the book came from my heart. I wanted children who feel different to see themselves as powerful and loved just the way they are. 

I wanted to encourage children who may feel different or unsure of themselves,” said Boller. “My first book encourages kids to be confident in who they are. I had so much fun with it that I’m now working on Special and the Power of Kindness, which teaches that kindness and empathy can change the world. I’m hoping to have it out before Christmas.”Community members wishing to purchase Special: Has Superpowers can do so on Amazon. Boller also hopes to have copies available at local libraries around the area so families and students can access it.“For me, becoming a published author feels exciting and humbling. On April 23, officers filed a report for distribution of an opiate, narcotic, certain stimulant and the use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just before 10a.m. Monday, police arrested 28-year-old David DeJesus Roman, 28, of Ogden, in connection with the alleged crime. He is being held on a $7,500 bond.

FINNEY COUNTY—A Junction City man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence following a crash that sent two people to the hospital in Finney County.

Shortly before 10 a.m., Sunday, first responders were dispatched to an injury crash at the intersection of E. Kansas Avenue and College Drive in Garden City, according to a media release from Garden City Police.

A&nbsp; Dodge Ram allegedly struck a Honda Pilot and fled the scene. After arriving, first responders assisted and evaluated two occupants of the Honda who were taken to the hospital by family for treatment.

Officers soon located the Dodge Ram in the area and made contact with Dakota Miller, 29. 

Further investigation revealed Miller was allegedly driving under the influence and found to have alcohol on him, and he was taken into custody. 

Miller was taken to the Finney County Jail on requested charges of DUI, Tampering with an Ignition Interlock Device, Transporting an Open Container, Criminal Carry of a Weapon when Intoxicated, Failure to Render Aid or Provide Info, and Failure to Yield at Stop or Yield Sign.

Miller met the requirement for bond and was released just before 4:30p.m. Sunday, according to online jail records.

 A 40-year-old woman reported a 2019 Honda CRV was taken from a rental car parking lot without permission. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $12,000.

USD 475 Superintendent of Schools is honored

MANHATTAN — For generations of Wildcats and Manhattan residents, C. Clyde Jones was more than a university leader — he was a symbol of service, optimism and deep-rooted commitment to the place he chose to call home. Known throughout town as "Mr. Manhattan," Jones lived to 102 and spent more than six decades strengthening Kansas State University and the surrounding community he loved.

Born in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1922, Jones spent his early years along the Ohio River before joining the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving in the North Pacific, he began building a career in higher education. His early academic appointments took him from Northwestern University to Georgia State University and the University of Illinois — a path that ultimately led him to Manhattan in 1960 to become the first dean of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/">K-State's College of Business Administration</a>.<a target="_blank" href="https://issuu.com/slogback/docs/fall_2022_k-stater_issuu_upload/61">That move set the course for the rest of his life</a>.

In his role as the inaugural dean, Jones established programs, recruited faculty and built the foundation for what would become one of the university's signature colleges. His leadership helped define business education at K-State during a period of rapid growth, positioning the college as a destination for students across Kansas and beyond. Jones kept a close relationship with the College of Business faculty, staff and students. "He cut the dedication ribbon when we opened the new Business College building in 2016, we hosted his 100th birthday party in the atrium of the Business College, and we dedicated the C. Clyde Jones Executive Lounge on the fourth floor of the building to honor his work at K-State and in the community," said Kevin Gwinner, Edgerley Family Dean of the College of Business Administration.&nbsp;"

For the past decade, he has come back each semester as a guest lecturer in our business classes. "C. Clyde Jones left a legacy on this campus few can compare with," said Adam Walker, president and CEO of the K-State Alumni Association. "The College of Business Administration is the most obvious example. He helped build that program, serving as the college's first dean. As chairman of the University Athletic Council, he helped lay the groundwork and raised the funds for KSU Stadium, which we now enjoy as Bill Snyder Family Stadium. In the community, he helped many people through his charitable work, especially with Shepherd's Crossing. But his greatest legacy are the countless K-Staters he taught in the classroom, many of whom today are still using the lessons he taught them."

Jones retired from the university in 1987, but retirement did little to slow him down. In many ways, the years that followed demonstrated the fullest expression of his belief in service, community and connection. The most far-reaching example occurred in 2001, when he joined local faith leaders in establishing Shepherd's Crossing—a nonprofit that provides financial assistance and budgeting guidance to families in need.

According to Ann Knackendoffel, president of the Shepherd's Crossing board, Jones' leadership was essential from the beginning. "C. Clyde played a key role in founding Shepherd's Crossing," she said. "A group of churches united to better coordinate efforts to meet the growing financial needs of families in our communities. Both C. Clyde and Rev. Jim Reed were essential in establishing Shepherd's Crossing 25 years ago. They had a vision and provided the leadership needed to launch the organization."

Knackendoffel said the scale of the organization's reach today reflects Jones' early determination to create something built to last. "In the beginning, we were providing about $4,000 a year in assistance; today, that amount is over $400,000," she said.

Jones embodied the shared spirit of service that defines both K-State and the Manhattan community. "K-State promotes the idea of family. As a member of the Manhattan community for 40 years, I have seen that clearly in our community as well. C. Clyde had both feet firmly planted in K-State and the Manhattan community," she said. "When he saw a problem or a need, he never backed away or said, 'that is too big of an issue,' nor did he ever say, 'that's someone else's problem to solve.' He didn't see a line between the university and the larger community and never separated the two."Jones also poured his energy into community events that brought people together for a cause. He created the C. Clyde Run and later Midge's Mile — named for his wife, Margaret "Midge" Jones — as annual fundraisers for Shepherd's Crossing. The events became traditions that reflected the warm, joyful spirit of the couple and the values they lived by.His ability to build relationships across generations was one of his greatest gifts. 

Knackendoffel recalled meeting Jones and his wife early in her time in Manhattan — a moment that marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship."C. Clyde had a knack for finding people and getting them involved," Knackendoffel said. "He continued serving on the Shepherd's Crossing board well into his 90s, submitting grant proposals on our behalf, and challenging us as an organization to do more. His presence will be greatly missed."

Clyde Jones was more than a university leader — he was a symbol of service, optimism and deep-rooted commitment to the place he chose to call home. Known throughout town as "Mr. Manhattan," Jones lived to 102 and spent more than six decades strengthening Kansas State University and the surrounding community he loved.Born in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1922, Jones spent his early years along the Ohio River before joining the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving in the North Pacific, he began building a career in higher education. His early academic appointments took him from Northwestern University to Georgia State University and the University of Illinois — a path that ultimately led him to Manhattan in 1960 to become the first dean of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cba.k-state.edu/">K-State's College of Business Administration</a>.<a target="_blank" href="https://issuu.com/slogback/docs/fall_2022_k-stater_issuu_upload/61">That move set the course for the rest of his life</a>. In his role as the inaugural dean, Jones established programs, recruited faculty and built the foundation for what would become one of the university's signature colleges. &nbsp;Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an "A," "B," "C," "D" or "F" grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 22 performance measures reflecting accidents, errors, injuries and infections, as well as the systems and protocols hospitals have in place to prevent them. 

This is the ninth “A” grade for Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan in the last five years. The hospital previously earned the award in spring and fall 2021, spring 2022, spring and fall 2023, spring and fall 2024, spring 2025, and now fall 2025, reflecting the hospital’s ongoing dedication to patient safety and quality care. “This recognition by Leapfrog is an acknowledgment of our dedicated caregivers and their steadfast commitment to live out our mission of delivering safe, high quality and compassionate care for all,” said Katie Seay, Board Chair of Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. “We are proud of our team and the exceptional care they provide for our patients, every single day.”

KDOT officials, along with local, state, and federal leaders, broke ground on Wednesday morning in Geary County on the K-18 and I-70 Interchange Project.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks from Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Secretary Calvin Reed, Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Proffitt, Geary County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher, and Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

"We are here today to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for the new interchange that will transform our connection from I-70 to K-18," Secretary Reed said. He also thanked all the local, state, and federal leaders for their efforts in securing funding for this project and others across the state.

According to KDOT, the benefits of this flyover bridge project include reducing congestion, allowing drivers to maintain a safe and consistent speed, accommodating future traffic projections, and accommodating freight. KDOT also says that this project will accommodate K-State gameday traffic without backing up into the through lane on I-70, provide improved driving conditions at the K-18/Boller Road intersection, and lower the number of lane closures during construction.

"This is super near and dear to my heart," Geary County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher said. Commissioner Ascher noted that he grew up right along the gravel road and has seen the transition of I-70 and K-18 over the years. "There is more traffic today than we can ever remember," Ascher said. "These improvements are very important not just to this region but also to the state. For our local and regional impact, though, this interchange matters to the people who live and work here every day." Ascher stated that this will lead to shorter commutes, less congestion, and less frustration for travelers and farmers. "Geary County is proud to be a part of this and is ready to see it through." Along with the other speakers, Commissioner Ascher thanked KDOT and all the local, state, and federal leaders who made this project possible.

One person whom each speaker thanked individually was Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, who was in attendance and spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony. Senator Moran pointed out the confusion that many drivers face with the current interchange and explained why this new interchange project was necessary. The senator noted that he has been a longtime supporter of efforts to improve K-18 from the west.

"There is probably not an interchange that I go through more than this one," Senator Jerry Moran said. "You're always cautious because you never know if the person in front of you, who is not supposed to stop, will stop, or if the person to the left of you, who is supposed to stop, will stop. This interchange is just so different, and it's just got to be a safety issue," Moran stated.

The Kansas Department of Transportation made it clear that Senator Moran was an influential player in securing some funding for this project. "We work with KDOT to try and make sure they have the necessary dollars to do projects that they are interested in doing and that we think have significant merit," Senator Moran said. "This project was one of them, and so there is $5 million of federal money to help put the money in place for the State of Kansas to do this project."

The overall cost of the project is $27.5 million, and King Construction of Hesston is the primary contractor. The length of the project, which includes a flyover bridge, is approximately two miles and is estimated to be completed in the fall of 2027.

RILEY COUNTY — Authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire in Manhattan.

Just before 11a.m. on Wednesday, crews were dispatched to a house fire at 2409 Lookout Drive, according to a media release from the Manhattan FIre Department.

Crews found a single-story home with fire and smoke showing from the attached garage. The fire was contained within 15 minutes. 

Family members removed an occupant with a physical disability before the fire companies arrived.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.

The building is a single-family residence. Damage to the residence was significant. The owner is listed as Wanda Jepsen who lives there, according to the fire department.
