WABAUNSEE CO. - According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations(KBI), Communications Director, Melissa Underwood, an investigation is underway following allegations against an employee of the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office.

Underwood says on October 12th, the KBI initiated an investigation into an allegation made against an employee of the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office, following the request of the Wabaunsee County Undersheriff.

Underwood says the investigation is ongoing. No additional details are being released at this time.

After 40 years in business, Karen Eddy has decided it is time to retire and has closed the doors on her store, RC Hobbies. 

The store officially opened in May of 1983 in Junction City and has been a staple in the community for the past four decades. "This was my husbands dream," Eddy said. "He wanted to get the RC club going. We outgrew our first location in the first year and expanded to our current store and have been here for the last 39 years." 

Throughout the past couple of weeks many people haves stopped in and made their final purchases while sharing stories they will remember about the store. "It's been bittersweet," Eddy said. "There have been a lot of hugs and tears. It's been good." 

She enjoyed many parts of owning her own store and seeing the city expand. When asked about her favorite memories, several came to mind. Eddy said, "What always makes me feel good is when people come back and say they have to stop in and see us, that probably does me the biggest up."

RC Hobbies has closed their doors. Karen Eddy is now officially retired. She said she will miss seeing everyone but looks forward to getting things done around her house and visiting friends she hasn't been able to see for a long time.

K-State's McCain Performance Series kicks off holiday season with Straight No Chaser 

Collaborative Title Services hosted a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday night, as they have officially opened their new business in Junction City at 306 East Chestnut Street. 

Collaborative Title Services has a location in Florida, but this is the first location in Kansas. President and owner of the company Imran Poladi spoke at the ribbon-cutting. "The name on the door means nothing if you don't have the right people," Poladi said. "We are so proud of our team in Orlando and here in Junction City, and soon to be in Manhattan." 

Jamie Wegenka is the Geary County Manager. Wegenka is a familiar face in Junction City and has done similar work in the past. She is excited about the new venture and is excited to officially open their doors at their location at 306 East Chestnut Street. "We can't wait to develop relationships with each and every one of you," Wegenka said. 

Several people attended to the ribbon-cutting, including former Kansas City Chiefs running back and Chiefs hall of famer Christian Okoye. 

Okoye and Poladi are friends, and Okoye agreed to attend the event to take photos and sign autographs at the ribbon-cutting.&nbsp;

On Sunday, October 21, 2023, the Honorable Judge William Malcolm passed away as a result injuries sustained in a car wreck. Judge Malcolm was sworn onto the bench in January of 2007 and was supposed to retire at the end of 2024. 

The judiciary mourns his tragic death and offers our thoughts and prayers to his family. 

Chief Judge Grant Bannister stated that “Bill” was a kindhearted human-being and a valued colleague. He was a dedicated public official that served the people of Kansas well. Particularly, the citizens of Clay and Riley County. 

He was good natured and often ready with a good story to lighten the day.  He presided over some of the most serious criminal preliminary hearings during the last two decades. Yet he also took joy in conducting wedding ceremonies and undoubtedly is responsible for more marriages in Riley and Clay County that anyone else in the last twenty years.

Just before 9:30a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for theft in the 500 block of McCall Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County&nbsp; &nbsp;Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Menards reported two known male suspects replaced UPC codes on security camera systems for a lesser price. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $530.

MANHATTAN—In August, Kansas State University president Richard Linton shared news of his cancer diagnosis. On Monday he wrote a letter to share an an update:

Last Friday, I completed my seven-week cancer treatment program and officially (and excitedly) packed up my remote office in Kansas City for the last time. Wildcats — I AM HOME! I cannot tell you how good it feels to be back in Manhattan.&nbsp;

I am beyond thankful for the incredible care provided by my medical team throughout my diagnosis, treatment and now, recovery. The photos I am sharing with you today were taken when I celebrated the completion of my chemotherapy and radiation treatments. As many of you likely know, there is a tradition to ring the bell on the last day of each of those treatments, and the cheers that filled that space when I did so filled my heart just as much. It was an incredible and momentous experience, and I like to think it felt the same for the medical professionals who pour their lives into that space every day as well.&nbsp;

Over the last two months, I have received tremendous support from my immediate family and the entire Wildcat community. Many of you shared well wishes and prayers from across the country that lifted me up and reinforced for me how special the K-State family truly is. Plainly stated, your encouragement made me fight harder against the cancer, and because of this experience, my appreciation for the K-State family has grown beyond what I ever thought possible. Your support made a huge difference during my treatment, and I know it will continue to do the same during my recovery.&nbsp;

During the upcoming weeks, I am planning to conduct much of my work from the Pres Res as I regain my strength. I'm excited to feel the energy of this campus surround me again in that space, and I know that I will steadily be able to be more and more visible across campus as time progresses.&nbsp;

I am truly blessed by the support I've received that has allowed me to continue to lead during this time. Your flexibility and belief in the great things we are doing have allowed us to continue to push this institution forward together. As I said when I announced my diagnosis in August, K-Staters face difficult situations and uncertainty head-on, fighting for the greatest outcome. I told you I would do that during this journey, and I believe I've made good on my promise.&nbsp;

Riley County Arrest Report October 15

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged kidnapping and other crimes involving two juveniles.

&nbsp;just after 11:00 p.m. Friday, police responded to a call of two missing children including a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old .

Just after 2a.m. Saturday, as officers and detectives were actively trying to locate the children, Overland Park Police Officers called Topeka detectives to report they had located the children.

Officers took the children to Overland Park Police Department where they were reunited with their parents. 

Overland Park&nbsp; police also located 42-year-old Russell L. Allen Jr. 42, of Manhattan with the children.

Police transported Allen back to Topeka and interviewed him.&nbsp; As a result of the investigation, Allen was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Kidnapping; Inflict bodily harm or terrorize the victim, Battery,&nbsp; Physical contact in rude, insulting, angry manner, Aggravated intimidation of a witness/victim; witness/victim &lt;18 years of age, Aggravated endangering of a child: Reckless situation, Aggravated assault; With intent to commit any felony,&nbsp; Theft by threat; Value $1,500 to $25,000&nbsp;

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged kidnapping and other crimes involving two juveniles.&nbsp;just after 11:00 p.m. Friday, police responded to a call of two missing children including a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old .Just after 2a.m. Saturday, as officers and detectives were actively trying to locate the children, Overland Park Police Officers called Topeka detectives to report they had located the children.Officers took the children to Overland Park Police Department where they were reunited with their parents. Overland Park&nbsp; police also located 42-year-old Russell L. Allen Jr. 42, of Manhattan with the children.Police transported Allen back to Topeka and interviewed him.&nbsp; As a result of the investigation, Allen was transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Kidnapping; Inflict bodily harm or terrorize the victim, Battery,&nbsp; Physical contact in rude, insulting, angry manner, Aggravated intimidation of a witness/victim; witness/victim &lt;18 years of age, Aggravated endangering of a child: Reckless situation, Aggravated assault; With intent to commit any felony,&nbsp; Theft by threat; Value $1,500 to $25,000&nbsp;

Manhattan man accused of kidnapping, battery of 2 juveniles

TOPEKA, KAN. – A federal jury convicted a Kansas man of defrauding car dealerships, financial institutions, and title loan companies, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Montressa “Monty” Cunningham, 42, of Junction City was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud, seven counts of bank fraud, three counts of wire fraud, and five counts of money laundering.

Beginning about December 2018, Cunningham applied for loans to purchase vehicles from Kansas dealerships. He submitted applications to financial institutions using other people’s social security numbers, false residential addresses, and counterfeit pay stubs showing fabricated monthly incomes, places of employment, and lengths of employment. 

As a result, Cunningham received seven vehicle loans totaling approximately $264,000. As part of the scheme, once Cunningham received the titles, he altered the documents to remove the lien holder’s name and address. He used the altered titles to register the vehicles in either Kansas or Georgia to receive clear titles. Cunningham then either sold the vehicles for cash or used the clear titles as collateral for cash loans. 

Title loan companies and individuals who purchased the vehicles paid Cunningham approximately $85,010 in cash.

The U.S. Secret Service and the Kansas Department of Revenue, Office of Special Investigations are investigating the case.

MANHATTAN - The City of Manhattan is mourning the death of a longtime leader and friend, Robert K. Ott, who started with the City as City Engineer in 2005 and was named Director of Public Works in 2014.

Ott was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and died Wednesday, October 11 surrounded by family.

Ott inspired coworkers with his optimism, humor, and perseverance throughout his career. He applied his exceptional engineering skills to his treatment, producing detailed timelines, task lists, and key milestones. Despite the challenges, he remained committed to family, coworkers, community, and work.

“Rob was an amazing, dedicated and trusted leader who we could always count on to be ready and ahead of any challenge we might be facing, regardless of the time of day,” said City Manager Ron Fehr.

“His accomplishments are monumental, some which can be easily seen and others that are not so obvious, but equally important. Rob’s cancer battle was heroic and inspiring; he will be greatly missed.”

Ott’s accomplishments while serving the community are countless. He led redevelopments of the Downtown and Aggieville districts, utility relocations for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, expansion of major roadways along the Edge Collaboration District, and years of partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to bolster the Manhattan levee system.

Ott also secured millions of dollars in state and federal funding and led many projects to enhance the City’s streets and infrastructure.

In February 2023, the City opened a new joint maintenance facility that houses more than 100 City employees from the public works and parks and recreation departments. Ott championed the project for his coworkers, improving working conditions and creating efficiencies for City services to the community. City staff surprised Ott at the&nbsp;ribbon-cutting by dedicating the facility in his honor and naming it the Robert K. Ott Municipal Services Facility.

Ott graduated with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University. From 1997 to 2000, he served his country as a Combat Engineer Officer at Fort Riley in the 70th Engineer Battalion. From 2000 to 2005, he worked at the Kansas Department of Transportation. During his career, he was involved in the American Public Works Association and served as president of the Kansas Chapter.

Ott is survived by his wife, Kim, and son, Landon.

City staff will join with his family and many friends to celebrate his life from&nbsp;1 to 3&nbsp;p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the Robert K. Riley County Arrest Report October 13

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged theft at a convenience store in Manhattan.

Just after 3p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1300 block of Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Kwik Shop reported a known female suspect took books of lottery tickets, activated them and cashed out winning tickets. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.

RCPD: Woman stole, cashed winning lottery tickets

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —The suspect in the September 15, shots-fired incident outside a Wyandotte High School football game, was arrested and charged Thursday afternoon, according to Kansas City, Kansas police.

The U. S. Marshals Service, with combined assistance from the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Police Department, Kansas City, Kansas Police Department and the public, tracked the suspect, a juvenile boy, to Manhattan, Kansas where he was taken into custody without incident.

 He is a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.

The Wyandotte County District Attorney has charged the juvenile with attempted 2nd degree murder and shooting into an occupied building.

 He is currently being held in Riley County as he awaits extradition back to Wyandotte County. 

Just before 9:30p.m. Sept. 15, police responded to Wyandotte High School, 2500 Minnesota, after shots were fired during the football game, according to a media release from Kansas City, Kansas police.

At the scene, police learned that with one minute left in the game, two unknown suspects approached the entrance to the field from outside the stadium and began shooting toward a USD 500 police officer standing at the gate.

The officer returned fire until the suspect fled north to a vehicle and fled. Police have not reported anyone struck by gunfire.&nbsp;

Suspect in high school football game gunfire captured in Manhattan

RILEY COUNTY–&nbsp; Law enforcement authorities are investigating attempted ATM theft in Riley County and asking the public for help to ID suspects.

The suspects are wanted in connection to an attempted theft and criminal damage to property case at Union State Bank in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department.

On Thursday, October 12, around 3:15 AM, surveillance video shows a 2015 Ford F150 enter the drive through at the bank. Two males wearing dark clothes and dark masks exit the truck and attempt to break into the ATM. No money was taken, but damage to the ATM is estimated to be around $15,000.&nbsp;

Just after 4a.m. Thursday, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office said around 4:11 AM, they responded to the 5400 block of Blue River Road for a report of an arson involving a Pottawatomie County Road Department F150 truck believed to be the same truck from the attempted theft. The Sheriff’s Office said in a media release they believe the truck was stolen earlier this morning near Walker and Flush Road in rural St. George.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This hunt will take place in the Curtis Creek and State Park areas and be limited to youth and mobility-impaired persons with permanent disabilities.
