Ramona Lee Schierbaum Printz-Smith, 93, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at her home. Cremation will take place. A visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Friday, December 02, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 03, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the J.C. Little Theater. She was born on September 21, 1929, the daughter of Vane and Gladys Schierbaum on a farm near Concordia, Kansas. Ramona graduated from Concordia High School in 1947, then obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Ottawa University in 1951. In 1949, she married Lloyd Printz of Clay Center, Kansas. They had three children; Gregory, Bradley, and Deanna. In 1993, married Don Smith. Ramona taught piano lessons and music education classes for over forty years. Twenty of those years were spent at Junction City High School teaching piano, music theory, and vocal classes. For many years, Ramona spent her time serving as a musical director, accompanist, and seamstress for many theater productions at the JC Little Theater. She also dedicated time to the First Presbyterian Church by playing the organ for around twenty years, she wrote church articles for the monthly newsletter for over twelve years, and served two terms as an elder. Over the years, Ramona was a very active member of the community and advocate for arts in many capacities. She also advocated for equal pay for women in the school district. Not only did she get to teach and share her passion of music, but she also helped celebrate the small achievements with her students. Her positive outlook and wonderful presence will be dearly missed. Fun Facts: She had two separates holes-in-one while playing golf, of which she was so proud. After retirement, Ramona enjoyed traveling with Don on many different adventures. She wrote her memoirs in her seventies, which is over three-hundred pages and has so many rich memories to pass on to her loved ones. At the age of seventy, she performed a full piano recital at the church. Ramona was nominated for the Master Teacher Award in 1985. Lastly, she was a contestant on The Price Is Right in 2004. Joan was born in Abilene, Kansas, on May 17, 1938, and was the fourth of seven children born to Clarence Leroy King Sr. She powered through life with her family and friends, plus her love of dancing, listening to the greats such as Elvis and Willie Nelson, and would always tap her foot and swing her arms to good guitar riffs and a swinging piano. She met the late Joe Martinez and the two were married on February 6, 1955. They soon welcomed four children throughout their marriage. After the end of their marriage, Joan met and married Doil DePew on July 22, 1984 and the two remained together until Doil's passing in March 1995. Joan is survived by her best friend and loyal companion who has always been by her side, her dog, Chika Bonita; her children, J. Micheal (Siegrid Sloan) Martinez, Deborah J. (James) Glessner-Heggie, Jolita M. (Kenton) Tully, and Stephen (Stacey Rucker) Martinez; her siblings, Lois Wier, Karen Rhondenbaugh, and Edith Hurting; her five grandchildren, Jasmine Glessner, Shane Glessner, Andrya Mertz, Leticia Martinez and Kayla Tully; and four great-grandchildren. Erika Ransom, a long-time resident of Junction City, Kansas died peacefully on Friday, November 25, 2022. She was born on April 3rd, 1938, to Xavier and Elsa (Schlosser) Wanner in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. She immigrated to the United States after marrying Tracy Ransom, Sr in 1960, and raised six children; Erika, Hans Peter, Thomas, Robert Leroy, William and Tracy Ransom, Jr. As an Army wife, she lived in various places throughout the US and came to love this country. She became a Naturalized Citizen in 1967. Over the years, she enjoyed work in the Hospitality field and as a Homemaker. You could often find her fishing, playing BINGO, trying her luck at the slot machine, or as was often the case, sitting at her kitchen table having coffee while visiting with family and friends. She always kept an eye out for Indigo Buntings and the many Hummingbirds that frequented the feeder outside her window. Erika’s laughter and smile were truly infectious! She was always willing to get up early to make her children, grandchildren and even a neighbor or two, a German Pancake! She was a strong and resilient woman, who will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Erika is survived by one brother, Franz Wanner of Germany; one sister, Heide (Gottfrid) Koso of Chicago, Illinois; and her four sons; Hans Peter Ransom of Claremore, Oklahoma, Thomas Ransom of Coco Beach, Florida, William Exavier (Lynn) Ransom of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tracy (Andrea) Ransom, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida; and one daughter, Erika (Quintin) Hatchett of Milford, Kansas. She was the beloved Oma to eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson on the way; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. Greg(ory) Douglas Wells, age 71 of Manhattan, died peacefully with his children by his side on Friday, November 25, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp;

Greg was born on January 4, 1951, in Manhattan, KS to Guy Justin and Leota Mae (Pascal) Wells. He joined his sister Barb at home in Manhattan where he lived until graduating high school in 1969. While growing up he was an active member of the local boy scout troop, where he earned Eagle Scout status. He was also a member of the Manhattan High School football team and choir.&nbsp;

He met his future wife Denise Ann Dixon in middle school through the United Methodist Church in Manhattan. On December 20, 1970, they were joined in marriage there as well. After marriage, he and Denise were at home in Emporia, KS, where he attended the Emporia State Teacher’s College and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.&nbsp;

In 1977, Greg and Denise joined his sister Barb and her husband Larry in the management of the Tiawah Hills Dude Ranch, in Claremore, Oklahoma. His love of horses was well suited to, the job. In 1980, his daughter, Samantha Kate was born, soon followed by Sean Alan in 1981.&nbsp; The family moved back to Manhattan, KS in 1982.&nbsp; Greg resided with his wife Denise and children at the house on North 48th&nbsp;Street until its loss to a grass fire in 2018.

Greg worked as an office specialist in the KSU Division of Biology for 30+ years. While at K-State he led many 1st&nbsp;grade field trips through the building learning about the natural history and wildlife of the area. Greg was an active adult leader of the Riley, KS Boy Scout troop and enjoyed teaching the boys and young men some of the finer arts of camping skills.&nbsp;

To some, Greg was known (or unknown) as Santa Claus for the Sedalia Church Christmas program or the Santa Paws fundraiser for the Humane Society held and the Candlewood Veterinary Clinic. To others, he was the “Voice of the Falcons”, announcing many different sports events over the years. He joked that once he announced an entire football game without a microphone. His voice was ‘booming’ enough to do just that – you always knew when Greg had entered the room. What many don’t know, is that he managed to do all of that while also caring for his wife, Denise through her extended illness. He was a devoted husband who’s love and commitment to his wife never wavered. He was also the most supportive, caring, fun, and loving father and grandfather.&nbsp;

In his later years, Greg’s mobility had been greatly reduced to due an injury from a fall in 2014. After the fire, Greg resided in Redbud Estates, where he remained until just recently. In this time, he enjoyed the continuation of his lifelong love of trivia and crossword puzzles (in pen) and watching football. If you visited Greg, you could almost guarantee that a game or program relating to football would be on.&nbsp;

He is survived by his children, Samantha Nott and her husband Eric of Shawnee, KS, and Sean Wells and his wife Christina of Margaretville, NY; his sister Barb(ara) Turnbull and her husband Larry of Downingtown, PA; two grandchildren, Brayden Wells and Dixon Nott. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Carol Dixon, and sisters-in-law, Madelyn Short (Terry), and Cheri Vines (Billie).&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Denise Ann Dixon in 2002; his parents; father-in-law, Lyle Dixon, and nephew, Brian Hood.&nbsp;

LaVone Erickson, 94 died November 25, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on March 22, 1928, in Clay Center, the daughter of John Bernard and Lottie (Wachsnicht) Lind.&nbsp; LaVone was raised in Clay Center and was a Class of 1945 graduate from Clay Center High School.&nbsp; She married Oran Erickson on October 19, 1947.&nbsp; LaVone worked as the Deputy Register of Deeds for six years.&nbsp; She also served on the Clay County Election Board for 35 years.&nbsp; Oran preceded her in death on April 10, 2017.&nbsp; LaVone was a member of the Clay Center Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Ronald Erickson; granddaughter, Lisa Erickson; sister, Bernice Berggren; brother, LeRoy Lind

Harold Frederick Hartner

John Wesley Willey III, Topeka, KS, left this world to join his beloved wife on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the age of 84. He was born October 2nd, 1938 in Solomon, KS–the only child to John Wesley Willey Jr and Henrietta M Wolfe. A graduate of Solomon High School, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Arlene P Haymond of Salina, KS on June 5, 1960. They lived in Solomon for 31 years and together welcomed three children: a son, John Wesley Willey IV, and twin daughters, Linda and Brenda. In 1992, John and Arlene moved to Abilene, KS. Sadly, Arlene passed away on Dec 2, 2002 and John moved to Topeka, KS shortly after this, where he resided with Mary Wright. John began his lifelong career as a Civil Engineer with Wilson and Company Engineering and Architects, Salina, KS, at the age of 18. Notably, his first engineering assignment was the design and construction of I-70 at Abilene. Over the next 4 decades, he was involved in all major infrastructure improvements for the City of Abilene and was hired as Abilene’s City Engineer in 1989. He spent the next 12 years there before retiring in 2001. His most significant contribution was the construction of the first reverse osmosis municipal water treatment plant in the state of Kansas. He was thoroughly involved as a member of the free masons; serving as Secretary for 25 years at the local level and as a former officer of the Grand Lodge of Kansas. Attending the annual Solomon lodge picnic each June with his family was one event he perpetually looked forward to. He was a man of few words with a quiet, witty sense of humor. Incredibly wise and intelligent, he was the kind of person that when he spoke, everyone listened. Although he was quite stubborn and independent himself, he would drop everything to do anything for his loved ones. John and Arlene were their grandchildren’s greatest fans, cheering at every sporting or musical event they were able to attend and taking them on countless day-trip vacations including tours of Big Brutus, old steam engines, airplanes, and fishing. He was known as the grandpa who believed in donuts and Oreo cookies for breakfast and he always had some kind of candy or cookie to bring each time he visited. An avid NASCAR fan, John often enjoyed a nap with the race playing in the background. His love for his various dogs and cats throughout his life was apparent, and anyone who knew him will always picture him in his wardrobe staples—cowboy boots and sweaters year-round. John was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene. He leaves behind his son, John (Jason) Willey IV, Topeka, KS; Linda (Joe) Duntz, Manhattan, KS; Brenda (Mike)Yamamoto, Colorado Springs, CO; 5 Grandchildren: Dustin, Ashley, TJ, James, &amp; Andrew; and 6 Great Grandchildren. George Hubert Zurmely, 93 of Chapman, Kansas passed away November 25, 2022. He was born September 25, 1929 in Detroit, Kansas to Lawrence Hubert and Alice Reba (Poor) Zurmely. George grew up in the Chapman area, attended the local schools and graduated from Dickinson County High School in Chapman. After graduating from high school he worked at the Union Pacific Railroad as a laborer. He later went on to serve in the United States Navy for three years. He was united in marriage to Alberta Belle Greenwood on March 4, 1955. She preceded him in death January 18, 2020. George worked for Ft. Riley Civil Services in the housing department and transportation.

 George is survived by his five daughters, Debora Kay Fowler; Frances Marie Baldwin; Katherine Elizabeth Zsoka; Susan Dianne Marten and Mary Ann Cairns and one son, George Dwight Zurmely. Seventeen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters, Cecilia and Frances.

 Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Chapman with Fr. Peter O’Donnell as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Chapman. Parish Rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at the church at 5:00 p.m., with visitation to follow. George Hubert Zurmely

Joyce LaVaun (Ruggles) Rein passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, surrounded by family, on November 24, 2022, in Abilene, Kansas at the age of 87. She was born February 16, 1935, to William and Vera (Bittner) Ruggles in Great Bend, Kansas. She was orphaned at a young age and raised by her Uncle Carl and Aunt Alice Bittner. Joyce lived much of her childhood in Great Bend and Bazine, Kansas, graduating from Bazine High School in 1954. Shortly after graduation, on December 30, 1954, she married Valis Leon Rein. Most of their married life was spent in Abilene, Kansas. For over 30 years Joyce worked as a school cook for USD 435. They had five children: daughter, Vicki (Steve) Gieber; sons, Johnny Rein, Verlyn (Pamela) Rein, Ronald (Debbie) Rein, and Curtis (Sandy) Rein, all of Abilene.

She is survived by 4 children, 12 grandchildren; Tammy Stroda, Randy Stroda, Jakob Stroda, Rick Rein, Angela Carranza, Matt Rein, Brandon Rein, and Corinne Garrison, step-grandchildren; Nathan and Jacine Gieber, Tracey and Tabetha Copenhaver, 21 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Donna (Ruggles) Switzer, and two close cousins, Shirla Holmes, and Barbara Bedwell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Valis; son, Johnny Rein; and granddaughter, Erika Rein-Mills.

Joyce was spunky, witty, adventuresome, strong-willed, accepting, and filled with beauty and grace. She was a master of reusing, repurposing, and pinching pennies, such as, plastic bread bags for overshoes, zip-lock baggies washed and reused (many times), and no more than 3 inches of water in the bathtub on bath night. An accomplished seamstress, she made most of her children’s clothes. Joyce could climb trees, ride bikes, run races, roller skate, turn cartwheels, hula-hoop, swing a bat as well as a hammer. She loved to sing and dance and was a girl scout and cub scout leader, a carpenter, and master cook and cleaner. She had a special love for all her grandchildren and would do anything for them, including babysitting, chauffeuring, and spoiling with them with their favorite treats. Her children were blessed with a “Super Mom” …there was nothing she could not do!! But most of all, for her family, she was unconditional love…she was home.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, December 2, 2022, 1:00 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 1400 N. Cedar, Abilene, KS, with interment at the Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 1, 2022, between 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd Street, Abilene, KS. In lieu of flowers, her family requests memorials be donated to the Abilene Senior Center, where Joyce enjoyed friendship and fellowship for many years. Evelyn Y. Richardson, age 91, died November 23, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan.

She was born December 11, 1930, in the Council Grove Hospital in Council Grove, Kansas, the daughter of Jim and Edna (Albin) Veal. Evelyn spent her ‘growing up years’ in Morris County.

She was a junior in high school at Wilsey, Kansas when she met her future husband Jug, after he returned from World War II. She was married to William “Jug” Richardson, Jr. on September 2, 1950, in Wilsey, KS. They lived in Wilsey until moving to Manhattan in 2005. He preceded her in death on December 31, 2021, after 71 years of marriage.

After graduating Wilsey high school, she attended Emporia State Teachers college receiving her BS and Master’s Degree in Education. Evelyn retired after teaching 30 years in Morris County, in Wilsey Grade School.

Her hobbies were grandchildren, baking pies, gardening, flowers and thrift shops.

They wintered in South Padre Island, TX and Southern California after retiring.

She was a member of the Wilsey Christian Church and Eastern Star.

Survivors include her three daughters: Diane Haddock of Denver, Colorado, Denise Klimek and her husband Ed of Manhattan, and Pam Smith and her husband Gary of Wilsey, KS; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one sister Marjorie Gose of Wichita, KS.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her sister Neva Parks.

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of her life to be held at a later date.

Denise Torrey, 65, of St. George, Kaas passed away Friday, November 25, 2022 at the Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.

Denise was born to Virlin Lee and Mary Pearl Fleming on August 5th, 1957, in Wamego, Kansas. Denise grew up on a farm and attended St. George High School where she met her beloved husband, Dudley Torrey. The pair shared their first date the night of her high school graduation in 1975. They were united in marriage on September 2, 1978, and had three children. The couple enjoyed attending their grandchildren's sporting events, spending time with family and friends, fishing, camping, boating, and going on drives together. Her children made her a grandma (mamaw, gram) to nine grandchildren. Motherhood was Denise’s greatest joy and being a grandma her greatest blessing. Denise delighted in spending time with her grandchildren. Together they went to the movies, on summer camping trips, 4-wheeling adventures, trips to Oceans and Worlds of Fun, birthday shopping, they put together puzzles, played card games, and more.

Denise was a pillar of strength and resilience, she cared for all of her children and husband through life threatening illnesses and her optimism and stability never wavered. Even when facing cancer, Denise continued to face each hurdle with grace, strength, and hope.

Denise was an eternal optimist and exuded positivity at all times. She sought adventure and found fun and laughter in any situation. Denise bungee jumped in her 30s, dirt-biked through her 40s, zip-lined in her 50s, and cliff jumped in her 60s. She loved camping, fishing, boating, celebrating St. Patty’s Day, and sledding on the perfect snow followed by a fresh cup of hot cocoa. Denise cared for her strawberry garden and flowers, fed birds, squirrels, outdoor fish, and toads. She always said, “the mess will be there tomorrow, there’s fun to be had today”.

Denise was a devoted employee of Walmart for close to 35 years before she retired in 2020. Denise met many coworkers who became good friends. Denise also enjoyed a circle of friends who enjoyed family camping trips throughout the years, lunches, card parties, and Christmas home tours. Denise was a member of the St. Joseph’s church for 20 years. She had a giving heart and sponsored many children through UNBOUND and donated to K-LOVE.

Denise is survived by her husband, Dudley Torrey, and three children Dudley Caleb Torrey (Natalie), Jess Torrey (Jennifer), and Megan Todd (Jared). Her nine grandchildren: Avery Torrey (Nicole), Clarissa Torrey, Vivian Torrey, Ruby Torrey, Tristyn Torrey, Aidan Torrey, Maddox Ibarra, Marcello Ibarra, and Isabel Todd. Her sister Vicki Westgate (Scott), brother Kevin Fleming, sister Colleen Lubbers (Jason). Sister-in-laws Carol Eichman (Ed), Ruth Cassity, and brother-in-law Steve Torrey (Terry) and Monty Peterson. Denise Torrey, 65, of St. George, Kaas passed away Friday, November 25, 2022 at the Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.Denise was born to Virlin Lee and Mary Pearl Fleming on August 5th, 1957, in Wamego, Kansas. Denise grew up on a farm and attended St. George High School where she met her beloved husband, Dudley Torrey. The pair shared their first date the night of her high school graduation in 1975. They were united in marriage on September 2, 1978, and had three children. The couple enjoyed attending their grandchildren's sporting events, spending time with family and friends, fishing, camping, boating, and going on drives together. Denise Torrey

Joseph “Francis” Minihan, 89, of Blaine, Kansas, died Thursday, November 24, 2022, at the Onaga Community Hospital.&nbsp; He was a life-long resident of the area.

Francis was born February 21, 1933, in Wamego, Kansas, the son of John Francis and Lillian (Smith) Minihan.&nbsp; He attended local grade school and graduated from Blaine High School in 1951.

Francis was a farmer and stockman, operating the family farm just east of Blaine.&nbsp; He also worked in Topeka for Henry Manufacturing Company and Goodyear Tire Company.&nbsp; He then worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation as an equipment operator.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; His hobby was also his work.&nbsp; He loved to farm.

Francis married Martha J. Priddy, on August 24, 1963, in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; She survives at their home.

He is also survived by his daughter; Karen Ebert (Kyle), St. Mary and his sons; Joseph Michael Minihan, Blaine, Kevin Patrick Minihan (Cathy), Blaine, Mark Allen Minihan (Carol), Wheaton, and Gerald Francis Minihan (Christi), Rossville; his 13 Grandchildren, T. J. John Franklin Kaiser, age 79, of Manhattan, died Saturday November 19, 2022 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

John was born on May 13, 1943 in Junction City, the son of Lester C. and Jean Marie (Smith) Kaiser. He grew up in the Junction City area and graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1961. After graduation John joined the U.S. Navy and went to Naval Photographical School in Pensacola, Florida.

He worked at Norfolk, Virginia, then was deployed to the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, USS Observation Island at Cape Canaveral, Florida and was later transferred to Washington D.C. to the Naval Photographic Center. After his Honorable discharge from the Navy, John went to Fort Riley and worked for the Department of Defense as a photographer in the photo lab and then became the Film Service Officer in the TASC Office. After 30 years of service, he retired in 1993.

In retirement John worked for Briggs Auto, Jerrys Carpet World and the Westview Community Church. He enjoyed being part of the Gideons, the Yard Art Classic Car Club in Manhattan and a member of the Westview Community Church. He was able to help the church and many people while working at the church, which was important to him and brought him much joy.

On February 13, 1965 in Mims, Florida, John was united in marriage to Carlene Young. She survives at their home in Manhattan.

In addition to Carlene, John is survived by his sons: Raymond Kaiser (Tracie) of Olathe, Kansas and Scott Kaiser (Heather) of Liberty, Missouri; also, his grandsons: Brendan Kaiser and Kelley Kaiser; his sister Joan Johnston, of Augusta, Kansas; and his nephew Mark Johnston of Chapman, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Michael Johnston.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 5:30 until 7:00p.m. Monday November 28, 2022 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Kenneth John Umscheid, age 62, a lifetime Manhattan resident, died November 17, 2022, at his residence.

He was born January 23, 1960, in Manhattan, the son of Cletus and Donna (Foster) Umscheid.

Survivors include his wife Jozlynn Sue-Ray Cunningham; two children: Lorenzo Ray Powell and Teanna Marie Powell; his mother Jessica Joy Phillips and her husband Andrew; his father Carlton Vinsick and his wife Stacy; and five siblings: Dekoda Gray, Kayla Kraft, Emma Vinsick, MaKayla Vinsick and Elexa Vinsick.

Georgia was born on October 16, 1935 in Merkel Texas to George and Nancy Bishop.

Georgia is survived by her daughters: Gwendolyn Dugan (Bishop) her husband Carey of Wamego, Nancy McCarter (Bishop) her husband Lyle of Wamego, Debora Haven (Willox) of Wamego, Cynthia Johnson (Willox) of Abilene KS, Nichole York of Clarksville TN; her 21 grandchildren and, 17 great grandchildren.

Georgia is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, two sons and one great grandchild.

Georgia Bahner

Linda Lorraine Felber, 72, of Manhattan, died Friday, Nov. 18, at her home.

Born
 Feb. 11, 1950, to John and Vera Schirmer in Danbury, Ct., Linda moved 
to Manhattan in 1973 following her marriage on Sept. 29, 1973, to Bill 
Felber. She was a Manhattan resident for the remaining 49 years of her 
life.

Linda was a 1981 graduate of Kansas State 
University with a degree in humanities who enjoyed working as a 
babysitter for numerous local families.

Linda and Bill had one son, Frank Timothy, who was born on May 9, 1998.

For
 most of her adult life, Linda fought a brave personal battle with 
paranoid schizophrenia, a pernicious, debilitating disease of the brain 
that made it difficult for her to function in a group work setting. 
Despite that, those who knew Linda unanimously remember her desire to be
 helpful and friendly in all circumstances.

She was a 
member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church who enjoyed taking part in 
various church functions. She was also a proud member of the Kappa 
Omicron Nu national honor society.

Among her proudest 
moments were celebrating her son’s accomplishments, including achieving 
the Eagle Scout rank, being elected to the National Honor Society, 
earning his undergraduate degree in political science from Kansas State 
University, and earning his master’s degree from the University of 
Arizona in international security studies.

She and Bill celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this past September.

Survivors
 include her husband and her son, both of the home. Other survivors 
include two sisters, Jacqueline Oleson of Greenwich, Ct., and Debra 
Oleson of White Plains, N.Y., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A
 funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. 
Thomas More Church with Rev. Frank Coady as celebrant. Burial will 
follow in the Sunrise Cemetery.

The family invites 
Linda’s friends to join them to share remembrances for one hour prior to
 the mass at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas More. It is requested that 
memorial contributions be made in Linda’s name to Pawnee Mental Health 
Services in Manhattan.

to Manhattan in 1973 following her marriage on Sept. 29, 1973, to Bill 
Felber. She was a Manhattan resident for the remaining 49 years of her 
life.Linda was a 1981 graduate of Kansas State 
University with a degree in humanities who enjoyed working as a 
babysitter for numerous local families.Linda and Bill had one son, Frank Timothy, who was born on May 9, 1998.For
 most of her adult life, Linda fought a brave personal battle with 
paranoid schizophrenia, a pernicious, debilitating disease of the brain 
that made it difficult for her to function in a group work setting. 
Despite that, those who knew Linda unanimously remember her desire to be
 helpful and friendly in all circumstances.She was a 
member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church who enjoyed taking part in 
various church functions. She was also a proud member of the Kappa 
Omicron Nu national honor society.Among her proudest 
moments were celebrating her son’s accomplishments, including achieving 
the Eagle Scout rank, being elected to the National Honor Society, 
earning his undergraduate degree in political science from Kansas State 
University, and earning his master’s degree from the University of 
Arizona in international security studies.She and Bill celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this past September.Survivors
 include her husband and her son, both of the home. Other survivors 
include two sisters, Jacqueline Oleson of Greenwich, Ct., and Debra 
Oleson of White Plains, N.Y., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.A
 funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. 
Thomas More Church with Rev. Frank Coady as celebrant. Burial will 
follow in the Sunrise Cemetery.The family invites 
Linda’s friends to join them to share remembrances for one hour prior to
 the mass at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas More. It is requested that 
memorial contributions be made in Linda’s name to Pawnee Mental Health

Georgia Bahner, 87, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society/Valley Vista in Wamego KS.

Georgia was born on October 16, 1935, in Merkel, Texas, to George and Nancy Bishop.

Georgia
 is survived by her daughters: Gwendolyn Dugan (Bishop) her husband 
Carey of Wamego, Nancy McCarter (Bishop) her husband Lyle of Wamego, 
Debora Haven (Willox) of Wamego, Cynthia Johnson (Willox) of Abilene KS,
 Nichole York of Clarksville TN; her 21 grandchildren and, 17 great 
grandchildren.

Funeral
 services will be held at 10:00a.m. Monday November 28, 2022, at the 
Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, with Pastor Pat 
Green officiating.  Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in

Georgia Ann Bahner

John Dale Apel (Dale) passed away on November 15, 2022, in Lindsborg, Kansas, at the age of 93. Born in Wichita, KS, he grew up on rural farms in Chautauqua and Elk Counties and graduated from Sedan High School after significant involvement in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Kansas State Agricultural College (later Kansas State University), and later achieved a Master of Arts degree in Communications and Social Psychology from American University in Washington, D.C., and a PhD in Adult Education from the University of Chicago. 

     Dale began his more than 45-year career with the 4-H Foundation and the Kansas State University Cooperative Extension Service, 4-H and Youth Development Department, during his Kansas State College summers when he served as an Emergency Assistant 4-H Agent. His interest continued when he was selected as one of four Kansan delegates to the National 4-H Camp in Washington, D.C. Shortly after graduating from K-State, Dale worked as editor of the South Dakota Bureau Farming and as a lobbyist for the South Dakota Farm Bureau. His 4-H Extension service was briefly interrupted when Dale served two years in the Korean war effort between 1951-1953. He served as a cryptographer in Taegu, Korea, with the U.S. Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea Army. 

     In 1953, Dale returned to Kansas and continued his service to the 4-H Foundation and KSU’s 4-H Extension. He worked as an agent in Morris and Saline Counties before briefly serving as the editor for the Kansas 4-H Journal in Manhattan. He built his adult life in Manhattan, serving 4-H as a specialist and most of his career as the Associate State Leader. His 4-H responsibilities included staff (volunteer and professional) development and program development, and was focused on building 4-H member retention initiatives. His advanced studies at American University and the University of Chicago led him to believe strongly in the importance of “self-set” goals as the key for 4-H member retention, as well as the basis for anyone’s career and life self-fulfillment.  

     Dale married 4-H Extension colleague Mary Dean Holle in 1961. They settled in Manhattan and raised three children, John William, Dean Marsh, and Ellen Ann. Dale and Mary Dean divorced in 1990.

     Dale was the co-founder of Kansas Evergreens, Inc. What began as a “Christmas tree farm” evolved to offer wholesale pine trees and household plant sales to major retailers in Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas. From 1961 to the mid-1980’s, the entire family was involved in raising trees and plants. Apel Road near St. George marks the place where Christmas trees were once grown.

     Upon retirement, Dale relocated to Overland Park, Kansas. He pursued a great number of personal interests including voraciously reading books of all kinds, and matting and framing pictures and prints. Dale became engrossed in genealogy and worked to develop a written history of his mother’s family, the Encells. He also worked for several years in tax return preparation. Dale developed a specific interest in the theatre and met his second wife, Shirley Tucker, while ushering for a dinner theatre. They married in March 2002, at Village Presbyterian Church and settled into her home in Overland Park. They shared a passion for day-trading, small dogs, their church, and the Kansas City Chiefs, but Dale never quite adopted Shirley’s passion for fishing. 

     Shortly after Shirley’s death in 2021, Dale moved to Lindsborg, KS, to be closer to family. While in Lindsborg he enjoyed being near Saline County (one of his first areas of responsibility as a 4-H County Agent), being surrounded by Swedish culture, and pursuing a discipline of daily visits to the gym.

     Dale is preceded in death by his parents John George Apel, Jr. and Eleanor Dryden Encell Apel, first wife Mary Dean Holle Apel, wife Shirley Tucker Apel, brother (Paul) Encell Apel and sister-in-law Deloris Hoskins Apel. He is survived by his children John and Regina Apel (Soldier, KS), Dean and Ann-Christin Apel (Lindsborg, KS), Ellen Apel (Minneapolis, MN), and his six grandchildren Yeremiah Apel (Vännäs, Sweden), Yohannes and wife Cecilia Apel (Lund, Sweden), Maria Apel (Lund, Sweden), Lukas Apel (Hays, KS), Frederik Apel (Soldier, KS), and Phillip Apel (Soldier, KS).

     A memorial service and time of fellowship will be held in the chapel at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, KS, at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 18. A short graveside ceremony will be held the preceding day at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 17 at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, KS. 

     Instead of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions be directed to the Kansas 4-H Foundation, Dale Apel Leader-in-training campership fund, 1680 Charles Pl, Ste 100, Manhattan, KS 66502. 

Gifts will support the Leader-in-training program, a teen leadership development experience held at Rock Springs.

Dale Apel

Mark Samuel Weis lived his fifty-eight years on earth with a full 
heart, a bright smile, and an unrelenting spirit. When he was a child he
 pursued his love of music, nature, service, and athletics. During his 
time at Manhattan High school he played Varsity Basketball, sang in the 
school choir (Chamber and Pops choir) and earned his way to becoming an 
Eagle Scout. During his time as a scout he was selected to participate 
in the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and Scout High-Adventure Camp 
in Canada, which are high honors in the Eagle Scout program. When he was
 just sixteen he went to live in Peru for a summer, where he became 
fluent in Spanish. After returning to the United States and graduating 
from Manhattan High School with honors he attended the University of 
Kansas, where he earned a double bachelors in Biology and English (again
 with honors) while making memories with his brothers in Kappa Sigma 
fraternity. He accomplished his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, 
after attending medical school at Kansas as well, a double Jayhawk. 
During his life he used his creativity combined with his knowledge of 
medicine to undertake several entrepreneurship endeavors. In his later 
years he became an author, and accomplished the feat of having six 
different books published. But most importantly, he lived his life as a 
devout Christian, a true believer; one who would share his love and fear
 of God with anyone and everyone would listen. At just twenty-four years
 old he embarked on a Mission trip for Mercy Ships, where he helped 
treat and heal children with cleft palates in Jamaica; and witnessed to 
the people there in Christ name.

At thirty-five years 
old, he persevered through a medical condition that would have left most
 people in a state of defeat. While living in Bowling Green, Kentucky 
and working as a doctor; he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. A 
tragic fate for anyone, but even more devastating for a man beginning 
his career, who at the time had a five-year old son and a two-year old 
daughter. But he met his disease without fear, and agreed to undergo, 
what was at the time; an experimental procedure to remove his tumor and 
save his life. He went to Boston to be treated by Harvard University’s 
Head Neurosurgeon, Dr. Peter McLaren Black. He received that surgery, 
knowing that he only had a 10% chance of waking up from it. But, with 
God at his side, he had no fear. He felt he had to do whatever it took 
to survive; to be a father to his children. He survived that lobotomy, 
losing fifteen percent of his brain in the process, but retaining his 
life. His doctors called his recovery a “miracle”. He felt that every 
day was a gift after that, and he treated the next twenty-three years 
after that surgery with love and gratitude.

Surviving 
that surgery had a cost, it led to him having many seizures, pain and an
 overall health decline for the rest of his life; which, like everything
 else, he faced with a righteous level of bravery. The way he handled 
it, you would have thought his seizures were a mild inconvenience to 
him. Every problem in his life that would be absolutely traumatic for 
most people, he took in stride. Two years after receiving that surgery, 
in 2002 he undertook another mission trip, this time to Africa. Where he
 treated two different tribes in Tanzania and Kenya with medical issues 
while delivering the Word of God. He loved his life, he loved Jesus, and
 he loved his family with his whole heart. That love drove him to 
conquer every obstacle in his way.

In 2007 he began his
 own medical practice in Lexington, Kentucky. The success he cultivated 
there led to him being offered a job in 2009 at Fort Riley where he 
became the head of their “RESPECT-Mil” program which treated veterans 
diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After proving his value 
in treating the nations’ soldiers he moved to Washington D.C., and began
 working at the prestigious Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was the
 lead primary care proponent for the U.S. Department of Defense 
suicide-prevention team (RESPECT-Mil). In 2012 he decided that he had 
accomplished everything he wanted to as a doctor, and began writing 
books, became published several times over, and pursued his own creative
 medical entrepreneurship endeavors. He wanted to help people with 
technology he thought would be the forefront of health for years to 
come, including hormone therapy, stem cells, and alternative medicine. 
He pursued these business interests in Phoenix, Arizona, a place he felt
 a special bond with and where he could be close to his beloved brother 
(Ted Weis), his nieces (Isabella and Julia Weis) and his daughter who he
 adored (Caroline Weis).

Although he left us far too 
soon and unexpectedly, his family will always hold on to the 
unconditional love he gave us. Mark was preceded in his passing, by the 
passing of his father, Dr. Jerry Samuel Weis just a month prior in 
August 2022. The month before Mark’s passing, he spent his time in 
Manhattan, Kansas, taking care of his grieving mother (Linda Weis) who 
was mourning the loss of her husband (Jerry Weis). Mark quite literally 
spent his whole life helping others and spreading love. It gives his 
family comfort knowing he is at peace with his Lord, Jesus Christ in 
Paradise.

Mark is survived by his two children: Wilson 
and Caroline; his mother Linda B. Weis; two siblings: Ted and Stephanie 
Grynkiewicz (Ross); and three nieces and one nephew: Isabella and Julia 
Weis, Joshua and Samantha Grynkiewicz.

A Celebration of
 Mark’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 28, 2022, at 
the First Lutheran Church, 930 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, with Reverend 
Stephen Haverlah officiating.  Inurnment will be in Sunrise Cemetery 
next to his father.

Memorial
 contributions may be made to either Boy Scouts of America Konza

Mark Samuel Weis, MD

Mark Stephen Knight, 57, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away November 18, 2022, at Riverview Estates, Marquette, Kansas. He was born May 14, 1965, in Lyons, the son of Kenneth Edward “Kenny” and JoAnna McCoy Knight. Mark was a lifelong Lyons resident. He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1983; and later attended Kansas State University and Hutchinson Community College, where he played football. 

Mark worked for Knight Farms, before assuming responsibility of managing Knight Feedlot from 1990 until 2016. He was also co-owner of Calm Creek Carriers, Lyons since 2008. Mark was a member of the Church of Christ, Lyons and attended the First Christian Church, Lyons in his early years. 

He served on the Lyons USD #405 School Board, KLA Leadership Conference, KLA Rice County Committeeman, KLA Board of Directors At Large, KLA Board of Directors Rice County, KLA Natural Resources Committee member, KLA Natural Resources Committee Vice Chair, KLA Natural Resources Chair, KLA Policy &amp; Resolutions Committee, KLA Water Committee, KLA School Finance Task Force, KLA Cattle Feeders Council, KLA RMS Safety Committee, Kansas Beef Council Executive Committee, NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Conference, NCBA Board of Directors Policy, NCBA Property Rights/Environmental Management Committee, and NCBA Tax &amp; Credit Committee. Mark was also involved with the K.A.R.L. program. 

Mark enjoyed going to Kansas State University Football games, tailgating with his family and friends, and taking care of pasture cattle. He played Santa on the Lyons Square at Christmastime for several years. 

On December 7, 1984, Mark was united in marriage with Sherri Suhler in Lyons. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his two children, Chelsi Neufeldt and husband Scott of Inman, KS, and Luke Knight and wife Kala of Lyons; sister, Kathryn Maxwell and husband Mark of Manhattan, KS; sister-in-law, Susie Knight-Loges and husband Charles of McPherson, KS; three grandchildren, Westin and Landon Neufeldt, and Goldie Knight; stepmother, Tamara Knight of Lyons, KS; step-sister, Lindsay Hufnagel and husband Shad of Manhattan, KS; step-brother, Ryan Boltz and wife Holly, Lyons, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and JoAnna Knight; two brothers, Phillip Alan Knight and K. John Knight; and sister, Judith Knight Hutton. 

Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 28, 2022, at the Church of Christ, Lyons with Robert Taverner and Steve Sears officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M., Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the Church of Christ, Lyons, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. 

Memorials may be given to the K.A.R.L. program (Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership program) or Riverview Estates in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.

(Mumma) Gugler, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, departed
 this life on November 18, 2022. She was born on February 25, 1940 to 
Carl and Queena (Wolfe) Mumma in Garden City, Kansas. Funeral services 
will be held on November 22nd at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State
 Line Road, Kansas City MO. Visitation will be at 10 am followed by the 
service at 11 am. Burial will be at Lyona Methodist Church Cemetery on 
November 23rd.

Judith Ann graduated from Garnett Kansas High 
School in 1957 and then completed Clarks School of Business in Topeka to
 position for her first job as a secretary for the Vocational 
Rehabilitation Service. Subsequently she served as an office 
administrator for various medical offices in Topeka, KS, Sunnyvale, CA 
and Manhattan, KS over a 50-year period. She retired at the age of 75. 
Judith Ann was married to James L. Wallis, Jr from 1962 to 1967 and they
 had a daughter Cindy in 1962. They moved from Topeka to California in 
1964. Following their divorce, Judith Ann and Cindy moved back to 
Topeka.  Judith Ann married Larry Gugler in 1971 and they had a son Marc
 in 1973.

moved from her home in Manhattan into an independent living facility in 
Kansas City in 2018 to be near her daughter and family.Judith Ann
 had a very kind and generous heart. She was always willing to help any 
neighbor, friend and family member however she could. She volunteered 
her time to support women recently widowed. She also loved her 
engagement with the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was an amazing grandma –
 caring for and spoiling her grandchildren every chance she could! She 
was an avid gardener and animal lover. Her love of gardening spawned 
from her mother and grandmother and encompassed large parts of her yard.
 Her vegetable production fed many neighbors and family members. Her 
love of vegetable gardening overflowed into landscaping and beautifying 
her outdoor spaces – much preferred over indoor spaces! She also derived
 great joy from her dogs and cats. She loved and spoiled each one of 
them every day.Judith Ann was preceded in death by her parents 
Carl and Queena Mumma, her twin brother Jerry Allen, her husband Larry 
Gugler and her companion Carroll Long. She is survived by her daughter 
Cindy Wallis-Lage and husband Kent Lage of Leawood, KS, her son Marc 
Gugler of Gravois Mills, MO, sister Carla Mumma of Lawrence, KS and 
three grandchildren: Austin Lage (Overland Park, KS), Madison (Lage) 
Kingsbury (San Antonio, TX) and Jackson Lage (Denver, CO).Donations
 in lieu of flowers are encouraged. Memorial funds have been established
 for Crossroads Hospice Society and Wayside Waifs, an animal humane 
society.
