Wanda Marie Bean passed away on Friday, July 23, surrounded by family. Wanda, the beloved wife of Roger Lee Bean, was born in 1939 in Healy, Kansas, and raised in a sod home near Healy before moving to a house in town. Wanda is survived by her husband Roger, and by her children Brenda Kay Tooley and husband Michael Tooley, Rhonda Leigh Holloman and husband Ken (Spike) Holloman, Scott Roger Bean and wife Jill Bean and Jerry Lynn Bean and wife Jessie Bean, as well as six grandchildren, Tyler (Morgan), Kendal (Jeff), Nathan (Brianna), Luke, Gunner and Grant, and two great-granddaughters, Izzy and Zoey, and also by her siblings Diane Brown (Duane), Rolland Stewart (Carol), Beth Pike and Janice Tarvin, as well as her sister-in-law Karen Salyer (Theron) and Richard Bean (Betty). Wanda is preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Ellsworth Stewart, and her sister Rita Barnes. Wanda and Roger married in 1960. Wanda earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University in 1960. Wanda worked in Forsyth Library as a student at Fort Hays, later becoming a teacher and substitute teacher as well as a loving homemaker for her husband and children. Wanda loved books and the libraries they came from, as well as many kinds of music. She enjoyed crochet, knitting and cross stitch, as well as gardening and being outdoors, but most of all spending time with her family. She was a gifted creative artist in many different craft mediums. Wanda had a warm spirit and an exceptional ability to create a beautiful and welcoming home and garden. She was loved and adored by her family. She made any room she entered light up. Wanda loved to celebrate (and decorate for) the holidays, instilling this love in her children and grandchildren. She was a kind, loyal, thoughtful friend. She loved to laugh, enjoying the little things in life, with an ability to appreciate and find joy in the places and people around her. Family was profoundly important to her. She was loved by all who knew her. She touched many lives. Services will be held at a later date. Dr. Kelvin “Tod” Kerstetter of Manhattan, KS passed away at the age of 58 on July 12 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Tod battled pancreatic cancer valiantly for 22 months. Full of love for his family and passion for his music, he maintained his belief that he was going to live a long full life with and for his family. During this battle, he continued to teach clarinet at Kansas State University, served as treasurer for the International Clarinet Association, and created YouTube videos where he performed many of his clarinet arrangements including Bohemian Rhapsody (and joking with his children that since he had 81 followers he should sell “merch”). Be sure to look him up on YouTube and “follow” him. He’ll be laughing in heaven over that. Tod was born in 1963 in Hays, Kansas to Elizabeth (Edwards) and Rex Kerstetter. After Tod’s father earned his doctorate at Florida State University, his family moved from Tallahassee, Florida to Greenville, SC where Tod spent most of his childhood and young adulthood. Tod was an all-state clarinetist, was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award, and was valedictorian of his class at Berea High School. He earned a B.M. from Furman University (Greenville, SC), an M.M. from Indiana University, and a D.M.A. from the University of Georgia. Tod and his wife first met when Tod was playing saxophone on the street in Aspen, Colorado, to earn tips. A friend told them that they were both going to Indiana University the following fall, and Jackie thought to herself, “I’m going to pursue him at IU.” When at IU, Jackie had already decided after a week of friendship with Tod, that she was going to marry him. It took Tod a bit more time to figure that out, but he came to his senses and they were married in 1989. They spent the early years of their married life freelancing in orchestras near Greenville, SC and teaching part time at Furman University; they then attended University of Georgia for their doctoral work; moved to Bowling Green, KY where Tod had his first full-time position at Western Kentucky University; and then in 1999, they each were offered a tenure-track position in the music department at Kansas State University. Tod was a loving father, and he thought the world of his sons David (13) and Jordan (10). He shared his love of music, plants, and sports with his sons, and he enjoyed playing hot wheels and flying RC planes, helicopters and drones. Mostly, he shared his love of travel with his family, meticulously making vacation plans most summers. One of his favorite vacation destinations was Hawaii, where he spent many hours snorkeling, swimming and boogie boarding in the ocean, visiting parks and other sites, and enjoying Hawaiian culture. Tod is survived by his wife Jackie and their sons David and Jordan; by his brother Ted, wife Alicia, and child Bella (Madison, AL); his mother-in-law, Olga Fassler; and by Jackie’s siblings, Connie and family (Albuquerque, NM), Tom (Beijing, China), and Cathy and family (Bloomington, IL). He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elizabeth and Rex; and by his father-in-law, Fred Fassler. Tod’s K-State family and students were very important to him. Jackie has found consolation in reading all of the notes from students and friends, and she would like to share these words written by one of his former students Rachel Palmberg. These words summarize Tod’s legacy of teaching. “Words can’t begin to describe what Tod meant to me at K-State, nor the weight of his passing. I am grateful to have gotten to know your family while I was in Manhattan; even a bit. Tod was the final deciding factor that brought me to KSU. I did a campus tour and was feeling overwhelmed before ending the day with a lesson with Tod. He made me feel warm and welcome straight away. He was one of the most genuine people I know. Even as a high school senior, I was drawn not only to his talent and knowledge, but to his kindness and empathy. ‘Tod made me feel seen and known as I navigated my early 20s. Even as it became more and more clear I wouldn’t pursue a career in music after graduation, he still encouraged me and supported me every step of the way. He valued his students as people, not just musicians. He was a father figure to so many in his decades as an educator, which deepens the weight of his loss. I am grateful not only for the short time I had with him, but also for the scores of other lives he touched. I believe God used Tod to influence a generation of young adults in the crucial time they were growing into who they would become. ‘His sudden passing is a severe injustice, but drops of his identity live on in your family, his colleagues, and his students. That is what I am choosing to celebrate between the tears.” Tod, we will miss you deeply, but are filled with joy that your legacy lives on through your family, friends, students, music recordings, and YouTube clips. Cornelle W. Estelle, 77, of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, July 14th, at Via Christi Village. He was retired from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant, serving during the Vietnam War. Cornelle Walter Estelle was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 13, 1943, the son of the late Sarah and Walter Estelle. He was united in marriage to Sarah Dioragnese (Jurden) Estell on January 2, 1969 in Junction City. Cornelle is survived by two daughters, LaSaundra Estelle, of NY, NY; LaTonja Estelle, of Washington, DC and his son, Djuan Estelle, of St. Louis, MO; A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 29th at Carlson's Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home &amp; Cremation in Manhattan, KS. Nancy Maxine Henry-Perry, 75, of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, July 21st, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. She worked as a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Manhattan for more than 30 years. Nancy Maxine James was born in Clay Center, Kansas on October 13, 1945, the daughter of the late Mellis Albert James and Opal Maxine (Lilley) James. Nancy was married to Leland D. Henry on October 7, 1966 until his untimely death on June 29, 1985. On January 27, 1990 she was united in marriage to Charles H. Perry in Lawrence and he passed on June 29, 2010. Nancy graduated from Longford Rural High School in 1963 and was a lifelong realtor in Manhattan. She was a proud member of the First Assembly of God in Manhattan. Nancy had many hobbies including bowling, traveling, shopping, and garage sale hunting. She especially enjoyed playing Mexican dominos and eating Oreo cookies with her friends and family. As a good Samaritan, she would serve sloppy Joe sandwiches to the homeless as well as giving them rides to medical appointments. Nancy is survived by a daughter, Sonja (Dave) Hannington of Brewer, Maine; a son, Kevin (Amy) Henry, of Manhattan; a brother, Emmett (Sandy) James, of Beatrice, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Tyler Henry, Chelsey Henry, Mitchell Henry, Abigail Hannington, Sarah Hannington and one great-grandson, Greyson Henry. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 29th at Carlson's Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home &amp; Cremation in Manhattan. Richard Neal Herren, 80, of Alma, Kansas, died Saturday, July 24, 2021, at his home In Alma, Kansas.

Richard was born on April 9, 1941, in Independence, Missouri, the son of Lt. Colonel Wesley and Sarah Bollinger Herren. Like his father, Richard had a proud military career. Richard graduated Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood Arkansas in 1959.

Richard served proudly in the United States Navy and then in the Airforce National Guard as an Inventory Manager Supervisor with a rank of Master Sergeant. He received numerous medals and ribbons during his duties in Viet Nam, Desert Storm and various state-side locations. Including - The Vietnam service medal, Air Force Achievement medal, Air Force outstanding unit award, Air Reserve Force Meritorious Medal, Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service medal with one bronze service star, Air Force longevity service award ribbon with two oak leaves, Service desert shield/storm, Cluster armed forces reserve medal, USAF nco pme graduate ribbon, Air Force training ribbon. Richard retired from the military after many years. Richard also worked for FEMA for a few years as well as the railroad.

Richard was a loving, reliable, good-natured, husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law. He loved his family and the time he spent with them. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 32, in Alma, KS and the Light of the World Christian Center in Topeka. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking many fishing destination trips with his son Jim Herren and others. People say Richard could repair anything and was very good with his hands.

Richard married Sandra V Yount Knight in 1966 in Edwardsville, Kansas. They were later divorced. He then married Maurine Neal Post on April 17, 1981, in Topeka. She survives him at their home in Alma, KS.

Richard is also survived by his children; Jim Herren, Valley Falls, Crystal Herren (Breese), Ozawkie, Kansas; his step-children, Jeff Knight, Topeka, Kansas, Carrie Knight (Arnold), Carbondale, Kansas, Kelly Knight (Marshall), San Antonio, Texas, Michael Post, Edmond, Oklahoma, Lee Post, Augusta, Kansas; his grandchildren, Alan Brown, Colby Herren, Dalton Herren, Braden Herren, T J Breese, Jaycee Breese (Burns), McKayla Breese, Scott Post, Ben Post, Whitney Post (Stratton), Kristy Neff, Todd Hedberg, Colby Schaar, Britney Schaar, Devin Schaar, Cole Arnold, Chase Arnold and Jacob Marshall and his great-grandchildren, Luke Breese, Elizabeth Brown, Margaux Stratton, Ike Stratton, Trip Stratton, Trinity Stratton, Sean Neff, Meka Neff, Sklyee Ethridge, Jeslynn Hedberg, Ella Schaar; and his siblings, Charlie Herren, Alma, KS and Elizabeth Herren (Frank), Topeka, KS. He loved his family and the time he spent with them. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 32, in Alma, KS and the Light of the World Christian Center in Topeka. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking many fishing destination trips with his son Jim Herren and others. People say Richard could repair anything and was very good with his hands.Richard married Sandra V Yount Knight in 1966 in Edwardsville, Kansas. They were later divorced. He then married Maurine Neal Post on April 17, 1981, in Topeka. She survives him at their home in Alma, KS.Richard is also survived by his children; Jim Herren, Valley Falls, Crystal Herren (Breese), Ozawkie, Kansas; his step-children, Jeff Knight, Topeka, Kansas, Carrie Knight (Arnold), Carbondale, Kansas, Kelly Knight (Marshall), San Antonio, Texas, Michael Post, Edmond, Oklahoma, Lee Post, Augusta, Kansas; his grandchildren, Alan Brown, Colby Herren, Dalton Herren, Braden Herren, T J Breese, Jaycee Breese (Burns), McKayla Breese, Scott Post, Ben Post, Whitney Post (Stratton), Kristy Neff, Todd Hedberg, Colby Schaar, Britney Schaar, Devin Schaar, Cole Arnold, Chase Arnold and Jacob Marshall and his great-grandchildren, Luke Breese, Elizabeth Brown, Margaux Stratton, Ike Stratton, Trip Stratton, Trinity Stratton, Sean Neff, Meka Neff, Sklyee Ethridge, Jeslynn Hedberg, Ella Schaar; and his siblings, Charlie Herren, Alma, KS and Elizabeth Herren (Frank), Topeka, KS. Barbara Emma (Betty) Mundell, 82, of St. George, Kansas, died peacefully on Monday, July 26, 2021, at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; Barbara was born on April 4, 1939, in Fulda, Germany, the daughter of Richard Kurt and Elizabeth (Weiherer) Eisfeld.

Barbara worked in production at the McCall Pattern Company for ten years and later in retail for Montgomery Wards, both in Manhattan, KS.&nbsp;

Barbara had many close friends which she treated like family, enjoying sharing time with them all. She was passionate about her relationship with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.&nbsp; Barbara loved to grow flowers and vegetables and preserve the harvests to share with family and friends. She enjoyed camping and especially loved fishing and could catch and clean fish like no other. Barbara was talented in crocheting and knitting wool blankets, hats, scarves, gloves and doll dresses.&nbsp;

Barbara married Robert Wayne Mundell on May 26, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas, he survives of the home.

Barbara is also survived by her son; Fred Mundell (Lorrie), Wamego; her granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth, Grants Pass, Oregon; grandson Matthew Ray Mundell, Lawrence, KS; two brothers, Germany. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

Rich was a life member of the VFW in Marion and enjoyed going to the American Legion in Hillsboro.  Rich’s faith was very important to him.  He was a long-time parishioner of Holy Family Parish in Marion.  Rich was nearly always the first person at church on Sunday morning, prayed the Rosary faithfully and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

  Rich’s loving family includes his loving companion of 31 years Betty Medley of Hillsboro; children James (Heather) Schlehuber of Marion, Sherry Schlehuber of AL, Jeremy Schlehuber of Hillsboro, Denise (Chris) Kostelac of Shawnee, KS, Rick (Tricia) Medley of Valley Center and Terry Medley of Topeka;  grandchildren Elise, Gabriella, Magdalen, Isaac, Samuel and Katharine Schlehuber, Matthew and Josh Schlehuber, Jacob Schlehuber, Avery, Colby, Tasha Kostelac, Russell, Carol, and AJ Medley, Brooke Medley and Jake Medley; and his siblings Larry ( Joyce) Schlehuber of MO. and Anita Hancock of Marion.

  Rich passed away at his home on Thursday July 22nd.  He is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Abigail, brother Billy Schlehuber and sister Carole Post.

Charles Richard "Rich" Schlehuber - November 9, 1942-July 22, 2021 (age 78)

Marie’s life began on August 12, 1925, in Vona, CO.  She was the daughter of Henry and Dora Zubrod.  She graduated from high school from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Stratton, CO.  Very early in life, Marie worked as a telephone switchboard operator before she was united in marriage to Daniel Navrat on September 22, 1947, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Stratton.  Marie was a faithful parishioner of the Holy Family Parish in Marion.  She volunteered teaching 2nd grade catechism at the church preparing children for first communion.  Marie led the weekly Rosary prayers for many years before Mass and enjoyed Altar Society.  She worked in the church kitchen preparing funeral dinners and always had a smile on her face.  Marie served her community as a member of the election board for several years and she was an avid quilter.

 Her greatest joy was her family which includes her children Donna (Robert) Cherry of Kingman, Ron (Deb) Navrat of McPherson, Daniel J. (Lisa) Navrat of Walton, Patricia Navrat of McPherson, and Machelle (Mike) Ratzloff of Marion; grandchildren Gary (Yolanda) Keen, Jessica Wells, Anjanette Montano, Melissa Chavez, Jason ( Celide) Navrat, Amber (Matt) Powers, Ashley ( Jonathan Graham) Ratzloff and Samantha ( Jordan Simmonds) Ratzloff; 14 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren. Marie Helena (Zubrod) Navrat - August 12, 1925-July 22, 2021 (age 95)

Eunice Ann Bretz Hunter, 90, long time resident of Council Grove, Ks passed into eternity July 26th, 2021 at Diversicare in Council Grove, KS with her daughters, Carla, Kathy, and Christy by her side.

She was born June 29, 1931 in Emporia, KS daughter of Vernon Dean &amp; Ruth Ann (Berger) Bretz. Eunice graduated from Council Grove High School and attended Business College. She married Calvin Carl Hunter on September 10th, 1949.

She had many occupations in Council Grove including secretarial work at Hunter Chevrolet, lifeguard and swim teacher of Red Cross swim lessons in Council Grove. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many dance recital costumes for Jill Fitzgerald Dance Studio. She was best known for working and then owning Bretz Shoe Store at 206 W. Main Council Grove, Ks. She was an avid promotor of small town businesses.

She was a member of the Council Grove Chamber of Commerce, Council Grove Christian Church, and Council Grove Country Club for many years. She was Ladies City Golf Champion in 1965. She belonged to and enjoyed several Bridge Clubs. She devoted many hours making quilts for her daughters and grandchildren.

Eunie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family was of utmost importance to her and she treasured her three daughters. She loved watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball and dance. This included 67 consecutive years of going to dance recitals. Eunie loved all sports, playing pitch, reading, and crossword puzzles. She will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Darlene and Donna, and brother Dean.

Eunie is survived by her daughters: Carla Pruitt and husband Don, of Victoria, KS, Kathy Litke and husband Darrell and Christine Ziegenhirt and husband Donnie, all of Council Grove; 9 grandchildren: Alycia Straight (Dane), Amanda Pruitt, Dara Fillmore (Jason), Dana Reddick (Bobby), Deanna Buttrey (Thomas), Dawn Palmquist (Lucas), Derek Ziegenhirt, Jacob Ziegenhirt, and Casey Cowdin (Troy). 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Shirley Hickman, and many nieces and nephews.

Kirk Lyle Mitchell, 56, of Osborne, KS, passed away on Friday, July 
23, 2021, in Osborne County, KS. &nbsp;Kirk was born on September 24, 1964, in 
Smith Center, KS to Doyle &amp; Lola (O'Connor) Mitchell. &nbsp;He was one of
 several children.

Kirk was a cabinet maker by trade. &nbsp;He has worked for Smith Cabinet 
of Farmington, AR, and cabinet maker in Wichita, KS as well as building 
cabinets on his own. &nbsp;Recently, he has been working at Midway Coop of 
Osborne, KS.

Kirk was an outdoorsman. &nbsp;He loved to fish &amp;&nbsp;go hunting, and 
spend time with his fiance', Becky Snook.&nbsp; Kirk was a hard working man 
and was always there for his family or friends, especially if they 
needed any help.

Kirk loved his children and grandchildren. &nbsp;

Kirk was preceded in death by his parents.

Kirk Lyle Mitchell

Larry R. Larson, 79, Junction City, KS. passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place per Mr. Larsons wish. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 7, 2021 at First Christian Church with Pastor Ronnie Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the memorial service at the church. Inurnment will be held following the reception in Liberty Cemetery near Alida, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapman High School Art Department. Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Kirk Larson (Brooke) of Mooresville, IN and Roderick Larson of Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Robyn Brumfield of Ft. Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Kinsey Larson, Josephine Larson, Ezra Brumfield, Taylor Larson and Eden Brumfield; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Eric, Earl, Eugene, Harvey, Norman, Everett and Vernon Larson; and a sister Reva Hostetler. Born June 30, 1942, he was&nbsp; the youngest of 9 children to Henry August and Hazel Rundle Glenn Larson originally of the Wakefield, Kansas area. Larry attended rural schools and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman, Kansas. He was a graduate of Ft. Hays State University where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, serving as Social Chairman and Commissary Steward along with being involved in numerous other extra curricular activities. While many farm parents in those days thought children were “cheaper by the dozen”, Larry’s parents discussed and thought that 8 children would be enough to help with the farm chores as almost everything that was produced on the farm was needed for food. Larry was a kind, obedient and cheerful son and brother who was always proud to talk about being a farm boy and his careers that followed. He started driving a Ford tractor at age 6 to help pick up hay bales and that was just the beginning of working their family farm and helping numerous neighbors. At age 16, Larry was employed for the State of Kansas Highway Department in Junction City where he worked for two summers. Following his graduation from High School, not yet 18, Larry walked into Wilson and Company Engineers and Architects in Salina, Kansas and asked to speak with the President of the company. He was obliged and started work there one year later doing drawings for the Saudi Arabian Government Highway project. Due to his performance there, he never had to ask for another professional job! As word traveled, Larry eventually moved to Waterloo, Iowa and taught Commercial Art at Hawkeye Institute of Technology for almost 30 years. Larry also had his own studio and did all aspects of Advertising Art and Design. He was devoted to his family and as his children became older he served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization. Larry often said his proudest moments were raising his family and watching his students become successful. Larry enjoyed fishing and was an avid bowler, bowling for 60 years with one perfect 300 game. Larry was added to the Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a junior bowling coach and got to meet Hall of Fame professional bowler, Dick Weber, for raising money for the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. Larry was an advisor for the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and served on a number of charitable organizations and events. Larry was also proud to have served as a Scout Master for eight years. He loved working with young children. As you know, in those days only the Good Lord knew whether a child to be born was a boy or a girl. As Larry’s dad was working on the farm making noise in March, 1942, the Good Lord came to him and asked what kind of ears he wanted for his son. Because of the noise, his dad thought he said “What kind of beers do you want” to which he replied, “two big ones”. On June 30, 1942, with his mother 45 years old, Larry was born on the kitchen table in the old farm house with the help of a mid-wife, but there were complications. Dr. Butcher, who was the doctor in Wakefield came to the house and discussed with the mid-wife the situation. They could not determine whether the problems were related to his mother’s age, being born on the kitchen table or if it might be because of his “big ears”. After 2 months of careful treatment the Doctor told his mother that it looked like everything was going to be fine. His mother replied “Thank you Lord” to which Larry’s big ears heard that response. As he grew older, Larry began to read and research and found what his mother actually said was “Amen Lord.” Larry studied about a seminary student who was working on his Doctorate Degree. On his thesis he asked what the definition of Amen was and found that only about 30% of people who say Amen actually know what they are saying.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Larry R. Larson, 79, Junction City, KS. passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place per Mr. Larsons wish. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 7, 2021 at First Christian Church with Pastor Ronnie Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the memorial service at the church. Inurnment will be held following the reception in Liberty Cemetery near Alida, KS. Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Kirk Larson (Brooke) of Mooresville, IN and Roderick Larson of Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Robyn Brumfield of Ft. Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Kinsey Larson, Josephine Larson, Ezra Brumfield, Taylor Larson and Eden Brumfield; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Eric, Earl, Eugene, Harvey, Norman, Everett and Vernon Larson; and a sister Reva Hostetler. Born June 30, 1942, he was&nbsp; the youngest of 9 children to Henry August and Hazel Rundle Glenn Larson originally of the Wakefield, Kansas area. Larry attended rural schools and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman, Kansas. He was a graduate of Ft. Hays State University where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, serving as Social Chairman and Commissary Steward along with being involved in numerous other extra curricular activities. While many farm parents in those days thought children were “cheaper by the dozen”, Larry’s parents discussed and thought that 8 children would be enough to help with the farm chores as almost everything that was produced on the farm was needed for food. Larry was a kind, obedient and cheerful son and brother who was always proud to talk about being a farm boy and his careers that followed. He started driving a Ford tractor at age 6 to help pick up hay bales and that was just the beginning of working their family farm and helping numerous neighbors. At age 16, Larry was employed for the State of Kansas Highway Department in Junction City where he worked for two summers. Following his graduation from High School, not yet 18, Larry walked into Wilson and Company Engineers and Architects in Salina, Kansas and asked to speak with the President of the company. He was obliged and started work there one year later doing drawings for the Saudi Arabian Government Highway project. Due to his performance there, he never had to ask for another professional job! As word traveled, Larry eventually moved to Waterloo, Iowa and taught Commercial Art at Hawkeye Institute of Technology for almost 30 years. Larry also had his own studio and did all aspects of Advertising Art and Design. He was devoted to his family and as his children became older he served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization. Larry often said his proudest moments were raising his family and watching his students become successful. Larry enjoyed fishing and was an avid bowler, bowling for 60 years with one perfect 300 game. Larry was added to the Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a junior bowling coach and got to meet Hall of Fame professional bowler, Dick Weber, for raising money for the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. Larry was an advisor for the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and served on a number of charitable organizations and events. Larry was also proud to have served as a Scout Master for eight years. He loved working with young children. Sandra Sue (Sandy) Chamberlin Stevens, age 78, Chapman, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021. She was born in Clay Center, Kansas, on December 20, 1942, the daughter of L.V. (Dick) and Rachel Helen Gibbs Chamberlin. She grew up in rural Dickinson County attending a country school (Wesley) and graduating from DCCHS. Sandra married Roy David (Dave) Stevens on November 1, 1959 at the Sutphen Mill Christian Church, rural Chapman, Kansas. Most of their married life was spent in the home Dave built in rural Dickinson County on Sandra’s parents’ farm. They had four children, Timothy, Debra, Scott, and Amy. Sandra was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, dearly loved by her family. Survivors include her son Timothy Stevens (Karen) of Woodbine, Maryland, daughter Debra Stevens of Junction City, Kansas, son Scott Stevens (Christy) of Abilene, Kansas, daughter Amy Wahl of Windsor, Colorado, and granddaughters Kelsey Stevens, Halee Wahl, and Peyton Wahl as well as seven, step-grandchildren and five, step-great-grandchildren. Sandra is also survived by her brothers Bill Chamberlin and wife Patsy and Craig Chamberlin and wife Vicky both of rural Chapman, Kansas as well as nieces and nephews. Her husband and parents preceded her in death. When her kids were little, Sandra stayed home, but she volunteered with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as well as with Sunday school and bible school at the Chapman United Methodist Church. Later, she worked in the deli at West’s IGA, receptionist at VacuBlast, teacher aide at Rural Center Elementary and Chapman Elementary, site manager at the Chapman Senior Center, salesclerk at Steinhauser’s Gifts and Made in Kansas, and hostess/cashier at Barb’s Deli. She volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dickinson County and with the foster grandparent program at Kennedy Elementary School in Abilene where she was fondly known as “Grandma Sandy.” She was a “kid magnet.” Wherever she was, kids were always drawn to her. Sandra was a member of the Sutphen Mill Christian Church, Lakeside EEU, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Beta sorority, the Chapman Area Preservation Society (CAPS), and she served on the Chapman Public Library Board. She volunteered at the Abilene Public Library and Chapman Valley Manor. Her hobbies included card making, adult coloring, embroidery work, playing cards, and reading. She especially loved spending time with her family. She will be sadly missed by all. Per her wishes, cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Chapman United Methodist Church with Pastor Connie Wooldridge officiating. Bradley ‘Brad’ Willard Fenwick was born on March 17, 1955, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He died on July 22, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas from complications from colon cancer diagnosed in December 2014. Having received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and master’s degrees from Kansas State University, Dr. Fenwick completed a residency and received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1985 focused on microbiology and immunology. Following a faculty position at the University of Florida, he was recruited by Kansas State University in 1987. During his tenure at Kansas State, he built a world-class research program in infectious diseases. While at Kansas State he held numerous academic leadership and administrative positions at the department level, chaired an interdisciplinary graduate program, and served as associate dean of graduate education and president of the Faculty Senate. In 2001 Brad was selected as the only veterinarian to be appointed as the Chief Scientist for the Competitive Research Programs and the National Research Initiative (NRI) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His time as Chief Science Advisor was during 9-11 – a time when the foundation for replacing the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center were laid ensuring the construction, opening, and operation of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan. He left Kansas State in 2003 to become the Vice President for Research at Virginia Tech and President of Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties. At the time, he was part of the administrative team that had to address the issues related to the shooting that resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals. He then became Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 2007. In 2011 he became a Jefferson Science Fellow, Senior Science and Technology Advisor with the U.S. Department of State – Office of Economic Policy, East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He led the development of the terms of reference and chaired APEC’s Policy Partnership on Food Security as well as the Policy Partnership of Science, Technology &amp; Innovation. In 2012 he was recruited by Elsevier, Inc. (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), the world’s largest publisher of over 2,000 science and technology journals and dozens of databases to be their Senior Vice President for Global Strategic Alliances, a position created specifically to capitalize on his talents. His work to foster non-commercial strategic alliances between research universities and centers, foundations and government research agencies, and related associations and stakeholders allowed partners to be successful well beyond their singular efforts. Deciding he had accomplished what he intended, he left Elsevier in 2020 to join Taylor &amp; Francis as their Senior Vice President for Open Science and Innovation. Taylor &amp; Francis is an international company originating in England that publishes books and academic journals. Over the course of his academic and professional career, Brad secured over $30 million in competitive research funding from numerous governmental and private sources; published over 150 refereed and industry/professional publications and reports (H factor – 42); supervised 35 graduate students and post-doctoral students; presented over 200 invited and keynote presentations throughout the world; held five United States patents; and with his spouse was the owner of a veterinary technology start-up company. He received numerous awards and honors including the Beecham Award for Research Excellence, the Yarborough Medicine Award, Sigma Xi Outstanding Scientist and Service Awards, the Kansas Veterinary Service Award, and the U.C. Davis Distinguished Alumni Award. He was one of a very select group who held fellow status with both the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Council on Education (ACE), and was a Distinguished Fellow with the National Academies of Practice. He served on and chaired numerous professional and national organizations and committees including those with the National Academies of Science, the National Research Council, and the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities. He worked with research and policy groups such as Research America, Council on Governmental Relations, Association of Academic Health Centers, University Industry Development Partnership, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and many more. Brad was a scientist, first and foremost. He believed in the importance of science and research. He believed that science is what moves our country forward in positive ways. As a result, it was easy for him to assume the position of chair of Science Counts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that works to enhance public awareness of and support for scientific research, in 2020. He truly believed there is an urgent need to strengthen our nation’s commitment to science by increasing the resources that fuel scientific activity in order to fully realize science’s immense potential to do good. He also thought that if he lived long enough the science would catch up his cancer diagnosis and he would be cured knowing the odds were against him. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and spouse of 44-years, Debbie Nuss, of Manhattan, Kansas; his son, Benjamin Fenwick (Jillian Oberfield) of Arlington, Virginia; and daughter, Emily Fenwick (Tom Ashby) of Golden, Colorado. He is also survived by his adoring granddaughter, Sadie Fenwick of Arlington, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his father, Willard Fenwick and stepfather, Phil Bloom; survived by his mother, Martha Bloom of Manhattan, Kansas and his brother John Fenwick (Sheena Boyd) of San Francisco, California. His commitment to providing for his family knew no bounds. He wanted only the best for his children, Ben and Emily, and did all that he could to ensure their futures were secure. It was reassuring to him that they are both so well-established and well-respected in their respective careers - a testament to the advice and guidance he provided to them. He also was comforted by the fact that they had found people to spend the rest of their lives with who made them happy and whole. As a family, we are extremely grateful for the time we had with him the past six and a half years. Time we were told we would not have because the odds were stacked against him. During that time, he got to see granddaughter Sadie born and to walk Emily down the aisle on her wedding day. Our last time together as an entire family was December 2019 (just prior to the start of the pandemic) when we spent the holidays in Colorado - a time we all cherish. Brad’s family urges you to have a screening colonoscopy at age 50 or earlier if there is a family history or you exhibit symptoms. Colon cancer is highly treatable if caught early. He is preceded in death by his father, Willard Fenwick and stepfather, Phil Bloom; survived by his mother, Martha Bloom of Manhattan, Kansas and his brother John Fenwick (Sheena Boyd) of San Francisco, California. His commitment to providing for his family knew no bounds. He wanted only the best for his children, Ben and Emily, and did all that he could to ensure their futures were secure. It was reassuring to him that they are both so well-established and well-respected in their respective careers - a testament to the advice and guidance he provided to them. He also was comforted by the fact that they had found people to spend the rest of their lives with who made them happy and whole. As a family, we are extremely grateful for the time we had with him the past six and a half years. Time we were told we would not have because the odds were stacked against him. During that time, he got to see granddaughter Sadie born and to walk Emily down the aisle on her wedding day. Our last time together as an entire family was December 2019 (just prior to the start of the pandemic) when we spent the holidays in Colorado - a time we all cherish. Brad’s family urges you to have a screening colonoscopy at age 50 or earlier if there is a family history or you exhibit symptoms. Colon cancer is highly treatable if caught early. Don served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. After his service time, Donald lived in Manhattan. He worked for Westar Energy for 38 years as a lineman and then later as a line foreman before he retired. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union for 65 years. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 17, and the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. Don loved coaching his children’s little league baseball teams, dancing, playing cards, and golfing with friends. He was married to Wilma Irene Gros, who preceded him in death. Don was later married to Betty Lou Phalen who also preceded him in death. A retired Goddard Public Schools 3rd grade teacher of 39 years, Miriam grew up in Potwin, graduated from Potwin High School as the Salutatorian of her class, and also from Butler County Junior College. She began her teaching career at the age of 19 while completing her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Emporia State Teacher's College. She went on to also complete her Master of Educaton Degree from Emporia State University. &nbsp;Miriam was named a Who's Who Among American Teachers recipient and was also named The Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1973.

During her newspaper recognition interview, she proudly stated that while she was of sound enough mind and body to enjoy her weekends, she enjoyed teaching enough to look forward to Monday mornings each new week. During her retirement years she enjoyed her word puzzles and being an avid reader. She also enjoyed being involved in her nieces and nephews educations.

Survivors include: nieces, Mary (Ray) Brown, Laura (Terry) Kilgore; nephew, George (Pat) Kasper; many other nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Anna (Thomas) McLain and all of her brothers and sisters, Dorothy Young, Ellen Criger, Wilma Criger, Margaret Kasper, and Arthur McLain Jr. and half-brother Warren McLain and half-sister Mary Whiteside.

Miriam Kay McLain - November 29, 1937-July 23, 2021 (age 83)

Joan passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 2, 1943, in Herington, Kansas. She was the daughter of Bud and Edna Iiams. Joan graduated from Herington High School in 1961, Emporia State University in 1965, and received her Masters Degree from Kansas State University.

Joan taught for 36 years at Washington Elementary School in Junction City. She taught 2nd and 3rd grades as well as a 3rd-4th combo. She was a John’s Hopkins Trainer for Success for All Reading Program for her school.

Joan had many hobbies including sewing for herself, family, and friends, she made many gorgeous quilts, enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, loved traveling - toured all 50 states and collected souvenir shot glasses from every state, vacationed in many foreign countries, and created beautiful memory photo albums, enjoyed gourmet cooking, and was a true animal lover of dogs, cats, and horses. When she was younger, she owned several horses and enjoyed horseback riding. She was a member of KNEA her entire teaching career, also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Joan is survived by her son, Jeff Turner, (Jodi), grandchildren, Grant, Rachel, and Tara; her son, Jamie Dodd; Archie Moore was her wonderful companion for 23 years. He helped her and stayed by her side; her sister, Judy Domke, (Kerry), her nephew, Ethan Domke, (Mindy), Dylan and Clara, her nephew, Nicolas Domke (Sarah), Josephine and Sofia; and many dear friends and family members.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 10:00 a.m. in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington.

Joan Lee (Iiams) Dodd-  February 2, 1943-July 21, 2021 (age 78)

&nbsp;Charles Richard Jackson, age 77, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice House. Chuck, as he was known by his family and many friends, was born on November 8, 1943, in West Lafayette, Indiana. The family moved to Manhattan in 1945 when his father accepted a position at Kansas State University. Chuck graduated from Manhattan High School in 1961, joined the Navy and was trained to fly drones. After the Navy, he joined a finance company’s management program and was an assistant office manager. Leaving the world of consumer finance, he returned to Manhattan and attended Kansas State. While attending the University he began his business endeavors by first working at and then purchasing the liquor store and adjacent car wash. He subsequently decided on a new direction by tearing down the liquor store and expanding his Aggieville car wash. He would go on to build two additional car washes, one in west Manhattan and the other on McCall Road. He sold the land on which his McCall Road car wash was located to Walmart and replaced it by building another car wash on McCall Road. In his spare time he began restoring, rebuilding and selling late model cars. He sold so many cars that the city suggested he needed a used car dealer license. He stopped selling used cars. Chuck worked with and was on the Board of Sunset Zoo and stayed involved in several other civic matters as well. He had a way of making everyone feel special and important. Chuck enjoyed life, travel, sports and especially his many friends. Chuck is preceded in death by his parents Marion “Jack” and Jane Jackson. He is survived by his long-time best friend and companion Mary Ann “Mimi” Balderson of Manhattan (aka to a few as Nurse Ratchet); a brother, David Jackson and wife Laura of Arrow Rock, MO, and nephews Alec, Nathan, Caleb, and Seth; and a sister, Kathy Jackson of Wichita, KS. He will also be greatly missed by Sebastian, Owen, Prescott, and Jens Balderson and Julia and Sam Wright to whom he was lovingly known as “PaChuck.” One of his lasting legacies is the Expedition Asia Exhibit at the Sunset Zoo, for which Chuck donated the funds needed to begin its development. Joanne C. McKenna, 89, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Valley View Senior Life Center in Junction City. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Tim Maguffee officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Joanne was born April 8, 1932 in Junction City, KS the daughter of John L. and Ruth L. (Smythe) Wood. Joanne graduated from the Junction City High School with the class of 1950. After graduation, she attended Marymount School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse at Geary Community Hospital for many years. She later worked as a school nurse for U.S.D. #475. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star where she served as the worthy matron. She also served on the hospital auxiliary at Geary Community Hospital and served on the board for the Geary County Health Department. Survivors include two sons, John M. Ehlers and Robert "Bob" J. Lorene Esther Sinn, age 86 of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital.

She was born on February 27, 1935 in Manhattan, the daughter of Harry Everett and Jessie Lorene (Allen) Whitney.  She graduated from Keats Rural High School.

On February 26, 1967 in Manhattan, she married Carl Paul Sinn.  He survives of the home.

Lorene was a farm wife and a member of the Riley Presbyterian Church, where she was the church clerk, served on many boards and was a Sunday school teacher for over twenty years.  She also was a member of the Silver Creek Beneficiary Club and was a Past President of Kansas Farm Bureau.  She enjoyed raising peacocks and watching birds.



She is survived by her husband Carl Sinn; one son, Brad Sinn and wife Tammy of Manhattan; one brother, Harry Whitney, Jr. and wife Donna of Manhattan; two grandchildren, Misty Williams (Josh) and Drew Sinn and four great grandsons, Peyton Horn, Gage Williams, Koy Williams and Beau Williams.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four infant stillborn children.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the Riley Presbyterian Church with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.

Lorene Esther Sinn

M. Dolores Muehleisen, age 90, of Manhattan, died June 1, 2021 at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community. Dolores was born March 21, 1931, in Camden, New Jersey, the daughter of Maj. Harry A. and Mildred (Wheal) Selby. Dolores and Eric E. Muehleisen were married on June 17, 1956 at Fort Lawton Chapel on the Hill. They made their home in Seattle, WA where Eric was an illustrator for the Boeing Aircraft Co. They were married for 43 years until Eric’s death in June 1999. In 1973 Eric changed careers and the family moved to Ellsworth, KS. Dolores was active with Holy Apostles Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Western Kansas. Dolores and Eric moved to Manhattan in 1980. There Eric completed his education and Dolores enjoyed working at Sears and being involved with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Dolores supported her husband as he pursued Holy Orders. This took them to Salina, KS and eventually to McPherson, KS. Dolores moved back to Manhattan in 2001. Dolores was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, and a member of the Jaycees in Enumclaw, WA, and a member of the Daughters of the King in Manhattan, KS. Dolores was also preceded in death by her parents and one son Eric W. “Butch” in 2013.

Survivors include two children: Stephen Muehleisen, Kristin Muehleisen (Stephanie Brecheisen) all of Manhattan; four grandchildren: Shaylene, Eric, Lindsey and Victoria; and 12 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. July 31, 2021 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Art Rathbun officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. They made their home in Seattle, WA where Eric was an illustrator for the Boeing Aircraft Co. They were married for 43 years until Eric’s death in June 1999. In 1973 Eric changed careers and the family moved to Ellsworth, KS. Dolores was active with Holy Apostles Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Western Kansas. Dolores and Eric moved to Manhattan in 1980. There Eric completed his education and Dolores enjoyed working at Sears and being involved with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Dolores supported her husband as he pursued Holy Orders. This took them to Salina, KS and eventually to McPherson, KS. Dolores moved back to Manhattan in 2001. Dolores was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, and a member of the Jaycees in Enumclaw, WA, and a member of the Daughters of the King in Manhattan, KS. Dolores was also preceded in death by her parents and one son Eric W. “Butch” in 2013. Survivors include two children: Stephen Muehleisen, Kristin Muehleisen (Stephanie Brecheisen) all of Manhattan; four grandchildren: Shaylene, Eric, Lindsey and Victoria; and 12 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. July 31, 2021 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Art Rathbun officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. Joyce Christine Lovin, 82, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, July 13th, 2021. Joyce was born in Hoxie, Kansas on March 24, 1939, to Edwin and Dorothy (Crotchett) Lovin. She attended a one room schoolhouse St. Paul Grade School in Sheridan County and Sheridan Community High School in Hoxie, Kansas and was a member of the Hoxie Methodist Church. After working a year in Hoxie, she attended Kansas State University and was crowned the National Sweetheart of the Sigma Theta Epsilon Men’s Christian Fraternity. Later, she moved to Topeka, KS where she worked several jobs often at the same time. She started her career at Montgomery Ward and was promoted to Personnel Manager. She retired in 2019 from the State of Kansas Bureau of Water Management. She moved back to Manhattan, KS where she enjoyed attending K-State athletic events and listening to the K-State Marching Band. Survivors include her daughter, Pam Grant (Richard) of Topeka; brothers, Robert Lovin (Louise), of Manhattan, Rex Lovin (Ronda), of Salina, Melvin Lovin (Kou), of Hoxie, Jack Lovin (Sylvia), of Wichita; sister-in-law, Patricia Lovin (widow of Richard), of Ellis; sisters, Mary Phillips (widow of Stanley), of Hugoton, Cynthia Gallaway (Keith), of Carbondale; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Joyce Christine Lovin

Richard Louis Worley, 94, died Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Village Manor in Abilene.

Born May 25, 1927, in Concordia, Kan., he was the son of Hugh and Millie (Daniel) Worley. He grew up on the farm in rural Formoso in Jewell County, attended a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Formoso High School. Even though he was valedictorian of his class, he did not attend graduation ceremonies because he had enlisted in the U.S. Navy and already was in boot camp, preparing to enter World War II when peace was declared.

He served on the troop ship the USS General J.C. Breckinridge in the Pacific Theatre following the end of World War II. He started officer training at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., but the end of World War II meant fewer officers were needed. After being discharged from the Navy he attended and graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan where he obtained a degree from the College of Agriculture. He made his career in ag lending and banking, primarily working for the Federal Land Bank Association of Wichita, serving as president of the Herington branch office which later was moved to Abilene in 1969.

After leaving the Federal Land Bank he obtained a realtor and broker's license and operated Worley Realty in Abilene in the 1980s. He then became a vice president at the Bank of Herington in 1984, before moving to Osborne where he and his wife Mary owned and operated Midland Business Products with stores in Osborne and Mankato. He also was a Xerox marketing representative.

After retirement he became an account representative for the Kansas Senior Times, a publication for older, active adults. In 2007, he and Mary moved back to Abilene where he shared his love of history by working for the Dickinson County Historical Society. As a young man, flying was his passion so he earned his private pilot's license and eventually owned two planes. His favorite was a Cessna 140 taildragger.

In 1958, he married Mary Catherine Pfeifer in Ellis, Kansas. They had three children, Kathy, Dale and Daniel. Over the years, they made their home in Herington, Abilene and Osborne. Mary preceded him in death in November 2007.

Survivors include daughter Kathy Hageman (Gary) of Abilene; sons, Dale Worley of Abilene and Daniel Worley (Lisette) of Osborne; grandchildren, Josh Worley (Lindy) of Osborne, Sasha Schultze (Clayton) of Osborne, Julia Worley of Manhattan, Erik Hageman of Topeka, Kelsey (Andrew) Clarke of Beloit, Raegan (Phill) Shamburg of Salina and Madison (Bobby) Bliss of Downs; 11 great-grandchildren and another on the way.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service for Richard at 2 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2021, at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene. Cremation has taken place. Karen was born in Elk City, Oklahoma to Bucilla Belle (Britton) and Leeman Eugene Roles, and was the oldest of 5 siblings. Graduating in 1958 from Wichita West High School excelling in arts, she pursued jobs in the jewelry and dental industries. She married Dean Allyn Darling 0n August 20th, 1961 and began her life of travel living in Topeka, KS, Las Vegas, NV, Udhailiyah, Saudi Arabia, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Mountain Home, AR and her final years in Manhattan, KS. In Las Vegas, Karen and Dean shared a love of horses, dogs, music and kids, giving birth to all her children in Nevada. Karen trained Brittany Spaniels after rescuing her first from the pound. They participated in field trials and hunting for upland game birds. Eventually her first dog became the first AKC registered grand champion. Karen was a founding and active member of the Southern Nevada Bird Dog Club traveling to field trials in NV, CA and AZ. Karen was active in her children’s school activities, PTO, 4 H, and local club sports. Halloween costumes were her specialty. None of the kids knew what a store-bought costume was, usually she upcycled and repurposed things from the home. Raising her children in the desert, they grew up on a steady diet of American Bandstand, Soul Train, Dark Shadows, scary movies and chores. In April 1978, the family moved internationally to Udhailiyah, Saudi Arabia. Karen became the first Woman’s Club President in the Aramco Camp and worked in the Aramco Information Center as the camp “Welcome Lady.” She also served as a liaison with the commissary facility. In 1981 Karen and Dean moved to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia where she lived until retirement in 1991. She became aware of US Military Service Men in the region who were unable to take shore leave during the Tanker War in the Persian Gulf (1981-1988). After consulting with the US Consulate Attaché and the Saudi Government, she was granted permission to organize and help foster-host all servicemen in the fleet to local Aramco homes. She constructed a Sailor’s-to-dinner program so all Sailors, Airmen, Army and Marines could come into local homes for dinner, fellowship, calls to home and relaxation. Karen loved to host parties, dress up, cook and entertain. She rarely knew a stranger, was always quick to buy toys for kids, offer help to those in need and find homes for stray pets. She became an avid scuba diver and snorkeler and enrolled her children in diving lessons, a passion that continues on in her daughter’s family. After leaving overseas and returning state side, Karen struggled with her purpose and a sense of belonging. In her later years, Karen battled with mental health issues, dementia and maintaining a healthy balance. Her children fought to get her help within the system and in her final year can attest that she was surrounded by loved ones, knew God’s grace, made peace and felt safe and loved. Karen is survived by her siblings; brother Gene Roles (Karolyn), sisters Hope Goodman, Teresa Meier (Al) and Gwen Ward. Four children; Michael Darling, Phil Darling (Tina) grandchildren Halee and Hunter, Dina Clark (Barry) grandchildren Nicholas and Nathan, and Derrick Darling (Kathryn) grandchildren Karl and Grace.
