(RILEY COUNTY, KS – October 7, 2024) Respiratory virus season typically impacts the northern hemisphere from November through March, and the Riley County Health Department (RCHD) is helping the community get prepared by hosting their 12th&nbsp;annual seasonal vaccination event.Flu-Tober Fest starts Monday, October 21st, and will run through Friday, October 25th&nbsp;at the RCHD Public Health Clinic located at 2030 Tecumseh Road.

At this event RCHD will offer flu and RSV vaccines as well as the newest COVID-19 booster doses, plus a free pumpkin to each household while supplies last. No appointments are necessary.

For those who cannot attend Flu-Tober Fest, vaccines will continue to be available during regular business hours both before and after October 21-25.“Our goal is to make it easy to protect your health this season,” explains Riley County Public Health Clinic Supervisor Dr. Jabob Clarke, MD. “Last year, we administered more than 300 vaccines at this event. By extending our hours, we’re hoping even more people are able to participate and further reduce wait times.”

Flu vaccines will be free for everyone without health insurance via the CDC’s Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Section 317 vaccination programs accompanied by a generous grant from the Memorial Hospital Association. COVID vaccines will be free for all uninsured children and children insured by plans contracted with RCHD. COVID vaccines will be available for adults and may include a limited supply of reduced-cost COVID vaccines for uninsured adults. Likewise, there will be zero out-of-pocket costs for those insured by plans that cover vaccines and are contracted with RCHD. RCHD contracts with most major insurers in the region but does not contract with TRICARE Prime at this time.

Flu-Tober Fest Seasonal Vaccine Event Begins October 21

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) would like to remind Kansans as we approach the respiratory virus season to remain aware of symptoms, preventative measures and when to seek medical treatment.

Every year, respiratory viruses such as influenza (flu), COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and pneumococcal disease cause hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths during the fall and winter virus season.

“We know the risk of contracting and spreading respiratory viruses will increase as we move into the fall and winter months,”&nbsp;KDHE Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dereck Totten said.&nbsp;“It is imperative that people follow common-sense preventative measures and consider getting a vaccine, especially if they fall into a high-risk category.”

Getting an immunization is an important preventative measure against respiratory viruses. &nbsp;Vaccines are available for all three major fall and winter respiratory diseases – flu, COVID-19, and RSV (for groups eligible for RSV immunization). In addition, pneumococcal vaccines are recommended for children younger than five years, adults, 65 years and older, and individuals at an increased risk for pneumococcal disease.

Kansas will receive approximately $780,000 from the federal government this year to cover about 9,380 COVID-19 doses for uninsured and underinsured adults. These doses will be equitably distributed across Kansas to Local Health Departments, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics, and other vaccination locations to help provide vaccine coverage to uninsured and underinsured adults in Kansas.&nbsp;

While anyone can become sick from common respiratory viruses like COVID-19, flu, RSV, and pneumococcal disease, some individuals have risk factors that can increase their chances of getting a severe illness.

Groups of people at a higher risk for respiratory illnesses:

Older adults&nbsp;Young childrenPeople with weakened immune systemsPeople with disabilitiesPregnant and recently pregnant individuals

If you believe you may have a respiratory virus (if you feel sick or tested positive for one) and you have risk factors for severe illness, seek health care right away for testing and/or treatment.

If you test positive for the flu or COVID-19, treatment may be an option to make your symptoms less severe and shorten the time you are sick. Treatment should be started within a few days of when your symptoms begin.

Examples of respiratory virus symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny or stuffy nose, decrease in appetite, sore throat, vomiting, new loss of taste or smell, headache, muscle or body aches, diarrhea, and/or weakness.

Washing hands and improving airflow in the places where people live and work are important to lowering risk from respiratory viruses.

Effective treatments are available for those who get flu or COVID-19 and are recommended for those at higher risk for severe illness. Treatment can reduce severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

You should seek emergency care‎ if you have an emergency warning sign (like trouble breathing or chest pain), seek emergency medical care immediately.

Everyday actions like masking and physical distancing can provide an additional layer of protection and can protect their family, friends, and coworkers.

Tests are available that can quickly detect these respiratory viruses.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a home burglary in Manhattan.

Just after 2:30a.m. Saturday, officers filed a report of burglary in the 2000 block of Shirley Lane, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 28-year-old woman and a 35-year-old-man reported their residence was broken into by an unknown subject who stole a handgun with case, a tote bag, and a wedding ring. 

Total estimated loss associated with this report is $2,500. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

The City issued a social media release saying that 12th Street in Manhattan will be closed to through traffic at the Houston Street intersection starting Monday, October 7, southwest of City Hall. East-west traffic on Houston will be unaffected by this closure and will be able to access 12th Street to the south.

To access City Hall diagonal parking on the east side of 12th Street, please use South Manhattan Avenue to enter the alley between Houston Street and Poyntz Avenue. This closure is expected to last for about a week while the Street Division works to repair recurring potholes at the intersection.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was a good weekend for Oktoberfest. Organizer Justin Hoover estimated the total attendance at about 25,000 people in downtown Junction City.

This was the fourth year for the event. "Well I think they like the contests a lot. Stein holding is always a favorite and stein carrying is a favorite," said Hoover. "

Approximately 75 to 80 volunteers assisted with putting on the celebration.

Hoover said he thought the festival layout was better this year. "We took the tents off of Washington Street. We try and get traffic up and down Washington Street and I think we were pretty much successful with that." Hoover added that a little more needs to be done at the 6th Street end of the Oktoberfest layout.

This was the fourth for the annual event. Hoover confirmed it will be back downtown next year and thanked the public for their support of Oktoberfest.

The Ciy of Manhattan has announced that late last month, work was completed to replace the shingles and flat roof at the Douglass Center Annex. Both were past their useful life — the shingles were last replaced in 1993 and the flat roof in 2001. This led to numerous leaks that caused the Annex to be closed temporarily to the public.

City staff selected a diamond pattern shingle that mimics the style of shingle that was on the building at least as early as 1944 (likely installed with a 1936 renovation project that added rooms to the old school). The photo at above left shows the roof as it appeared in 1976.

Because the City selected this historic shingle type, it qualified for a Kansas Rehabilitation Tax Credit from the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office. The City can sell these historic tax credits to recoup some of its investment (approximately 25% of the project cost) in the project.

The "we're calling about you missing Federal Grand Jury Duty" scam is back. Police have recently received numerous reports and have seen victims lose money to scammers claiming to be law enforcement.-&nbsp;

RCPD will NEVER solicit money from you by phone- They will NEVER ask you to deposit money at a kiosk- They will NEVER ask you to send gift cards. If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and call us at (785) 537-2112 (even if that's the number they used) to verify it was RCPD that called you in the first place. 

&nbsp;The Grandparent Scam - a person calls claiming the victim’s grandson or granddaughter is in jail and needs money to be bonded out. The Loan Scam - the company deposits money in your account for a "loan" and asks you to send back the excess. This is also called the “Grant” scam. The Warrant Scam - scammers leave a recorded message stating you have a warrant out for your arrest for committing "serious allegations," but can clear your name for a payment. 

IRS Scam - a person claims you owe back taxes to the IRS and threatens to arrest you if you don’t pay the amount. Social Security Scam - Your social security # has been compromised. Someone stole your identity and committed felony crimes. You can pay to make it right. Gift Card Scam - a person convinces the victim to purchase gift cards for various reasons, then asks them to read the numbers on the back so they can collect the money from the cards.

A couple of additional things to be aware of: There is no such thing as the Riley County Sheriff, scammers often use this name in their calls. We are the Riley County Police Department .No legitimate business will ask you to use gift cards for any sort of debt or payment. This is an automatic sign of a scam.&nbsp;&nbsp;

GEARY COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 9p.m. Friday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Ford F150 driven by Troy L.&nbsp;Allen, 19, Derby,&nbsp;was northbound on Milford Lake Road just north of Interstate 70.

The driver began to lose control of the pickup. The attached trailer pulled the vehicle into the East ditch. The pickup continued northbound in the ditch for a short distance, struck a concrete culvert, became airborne and landed in the creek on the east side of the road.

EMS transported Allen and passengers Cayden S.&nbsp;Arnett, 19, and Blake A.&nbsp;Huffman, 19, both of Derby to Stomont Vail in Junction City. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

3 hospitalized after pickup lands in Geary County creek

Kansas businesses and entrepreneurs were honored Thursday night during the Kansas Department of Commerce’s 2024&nbsp;To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards&nbsp;ceremony at the Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau. The event recognized their outstanding contributions to the state’s economy and communities.

The ceremony will take place at the Linear Trailhead parking lot at Casement Road and Hayes Drive at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 9.

General parking has been provided by the businesses along the east side of Hayes Drive. The Linear Trail parking lot will be reserved for accessibility parking. We will have a path marked from the parking lot the ceremony space for the public to use.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —The family of a woman injured&nbsp; in an&nbsp;incident that occurred near the Aggieville district in the early morning hours of Friday, August 30, are offering an additional $10,000 reward for information in the case, according to the Riley County Police Department.

The initial report received by police indicated the young woman identified as 22-year-old Keena HIbbs, was found in the 800 block of Laramie Street after walking home from a local establishment.

&nbsp;Police are reviewing surveillance footage from Aggieville and surrounding areas and are following up on any leads to determine the cause of her injuries. Police encourage anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

RCPD: Woman lost $1,200 in email, text message scam

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2p.m.&nbsp; Wednesday in Riley County.

A 1998 Chevy 1500 driven by&nbsp; Gary Romanski, 78, of Ogden, was traveling near Scenic Drive and Miller Parkway, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The driver lost control of the pickup. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Romanski was air-lifted to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment of his injuries.&nbsp;

Starting Wednesday, all USD 383 Board of Education Meetings will be held at the Lincoln Education Center at 901 Poyntz Ave. If you plan on attending, please use the front door along Poyntz Avenue. There is parking available in the front and along 9th and 10th streets.

Starting Wednesday, all USD 383 Board of Education Meetings will be held at the Lincoln Education Center at 901 Poyntz Ave. If you plan on attending, please use the front door along Poyntz Avenue. There is parking available in the front and along 9th and 10th streets. Meetings will be held in the large conference room in the Teaching and Learning department and there will be signs and people available to direct you to the room. OSAGE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 10:30a.m. Sept. 30, a Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit conducted a traffic stop at milepost 139 on U.S. 75 highway for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

 During the stop, illegal narcotics were located. The deputy took 35-year-old Caleb M. Kidd of Abilene into custody and transported him to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges of Distribution of methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia and No drug tax stamp.

This fall, university enrollment grew by 2.8% for 2024.Continuing an upward trajectory, this is the second year of enrollment increases, as K-State's overall headcount this semester grew to 20,295 students across all campuses.

"Our plan to broaden the university's reach in a strategic and measured manner is a responsibility we take seriously every day," said Provost and Executive Vice President Jesse Perez Mendez. "But it is also one we celebrate, especially when we see such positive results. These numbers aren't just 20,000-plus students — they're 20,000-plus stories and opportunities to change lives."

Total undergraduate enrollment grew by 3.6%, while graduate enrollment declined 1%. The College of Veterinary Medicine increased by 3.6%.K-State's efforts over the past several years to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/admissions/">significantly expand access to its quality educational offerings</a>&nbsp;have established a strong sense of momentum as key elements of the university's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/next-gen/">Next-Gen K-State</a>&nbsp;strategic plan, Mendez said.

This growth did not sacrifice quality: incoming first-time freshmen averaged a high school grade point average of 3.78 — one of the highest for K-State in recent years

.Focusing on its land-grant mission of access, K-State is making significant strides in enrolling low-income, first-generation and underrepresented minority students, especially among its first-year class, said Karen Goos, vice provost for enrollment management. Pell-eligible first-year students, as a group, grew by 27.8%, while first-generation enrollment increased 13%. Enrollment from traditionally underrepresented minority groups also grew, up 16% from the previous year. In-state enrollment among those freshmen is up 7.7%, with students coming from 95 of Kansas' 105 counties. Out-of-state enrollment in this year's first-year class increased 14%, with K-State attracting students from 43 states and U.S. territories. K-State also drew students from nearly 400 different institutions, as out-of-state transfer student enrollment increased by 7.5%.
