RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas felon on new allegations after an arrest.

Just after 6p.m. Thursday, police arrested 20-year-old Cristian Soto of Manhattan on requested charges that include multiple offenses of violation of the Offender Registration Act x 8.

In December of 2023, Soto was convicted of Aggravated Robbery; Armed w/ dangerous weapon, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Soto is being held on a $60,000 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Manhattan City Commission has authorized a sales tax exemption for the Flint Hills Breadbasket renovation project at 2326 Skyview Lane. The Breadbasket is renovating an existing building and it needs to be equipped for future purchases.

The Flint Hills Breadbasket is a nonprofit organization but was not exempt from sales tax. They are currently involved in a capital campaign to raise funds for the project.

The city commission vote to approve a resolution containing the exemption was 5-0.

Patterson Family Foundation seeks to strengthen rural economy with this generous investment.

Manhattan, KS – Manhattan Area Technical College has been awarded a $668,000 grant by the Patterson Family Foundation. The school said the grant focus on students in grades 6-12 and aims to grow and sustain the talent pool in rural communities.

The initiative strengthens key industries identified by the Patterson Family Foundation as "the backbone of America's economy and vital to the health and well-being of rural communities." Manhattan Tech has long been a leader in these professions, including Welding, Construction/Carpentry, HVAC-R, Electrical, Automotive Services, and Industrial Machinery Mechanics. The grant will benefit rural-identified counties, including Clay, Dickinson, Geary, Marshall, Morris, Nemaha, Pottawatomie, and Waubansee. 

"As part of this initiative, students have the opportunity to earn credentials and college credit at little to no cost," states Manhattan Tech President Jim Genandt. "With the generosity of the Patterson Family Foundation, we are building an educational pathway that can lead to certificates and degrees at Manhattan Tech and ultimately an in-demand profession in a rural critical field."

A portion of the funding will go toward creating a Mobile Technology Lab equipped with virtual and augmented reality tools that can be brought directly to these communities.&nbsp;

Junior and senior high school teachers will also benefit through access to training, equipment, and ongoing mentoring provided by Manhattan Tech to effectively teach hands-on and technology-enabled lessons in these fields. 

Additionally, efforts made possible by this grant will foster community engagement by enabling parents, counselors, and community workforce specialists to participate in virtual and hands-on experiences, thereby enhancing their understanding and promotion of these occupations to area youth.

Manhattan Tech is awarded $668K grant for rural workforce development

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating an alleged fentanyl overdose death and have made an arrest.

Just after noon Wednesday police arrested 23-year-old Caziah Self of Ellsworth in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The arrested is in connection with an incident that occurred in June of 2023 where law enforcement officers investigated the overdose death of a 25-year-old individual in Manhattan.

Self is being held on a $100,000 bond on requested charges of&nbsp; distribution of a controlled substance causing death, use of a communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation, and distribution of opiate/opium/stimulant/heroin dosage &lt; 10 units.

Self has four previous drug convictions and another for criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Anyone with relevant information on this case is urged to come forward, according to the RCPD. The investigation into this and all other Fentanyl-related overdoses remain active and ongoing. Any individuals possessing pertinent information are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement authorities.

East Manhattan Gateway Plan starts third round of public engagement, concept boards

Luke Fox wins the boys division of Hoop Shoot hitting 5 out of 7 free throws.

The finals of the boys competition in the 2024 Hoop Holler N’ Shoot free throw shooting contest were held during half time of Tuesday’s KSU men’s game.

Participants won their way into the finals via shoot offs conducted at Manhattan area elementary schools among 5th grade students. Over 550 students participated in the competition.

The winners and the schools they represent are as follows:

1st - Luke Fox, Bergman – hitting 5 out of 7

2nd -&nbsp; Kord Crosby, Flint Hills Christian – hitting 4 out of 7

3rd - Landon Clark, Marlatt – hitting 4 out of 7*

Prizes awarded to all finalists included a plaque and a K-State coaches autographed Hoop Holler N’Shoot t-shirt.

This is the 26th Anniversary of Hoop Holler N’ Shoot, during that time over 15,000 5th and 6th graders have participated in the program.

Hoop Holler N’ Shoot is a free throw contest for 5th graders in the Manhattan area schools. A boy and girl champion is determined at each school. The grade school champions move on to semi-finals and finals at Kansas State University basketball games.&nbsp;

Participating sponsors are Manhattan Optimist Club, KS StateBank, McDonalds, Manhattan-Ogden USD 383, Manhattan Parks and Recreation, K-State Bands, Q-Country 103.5, and Power Hits 97.5.

Iconic country music artists to perform holiday show at McCain Auditorium

With the election of three new members this year, the Kansas State Board of Education is expected to shift more conservative on issues like the recognition of Trans students, books in the school library, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.&nbsp; Yet for all the publicity these issues receive, they do not really capture what the Kansas School Board does most of the time.

There seems to be a bipartisan near-consensus behind the “career readiness” focus in schools.&nbsp; Such a focus undoubtedly has its advantages, but today it has become single-minded.&nbsp; Career readiness is crowding out vital civic education and extracurricular activities, to the detriment of students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It started out well.&nbsp; Curricula like the Olathe School District’s 21st Century programs have been designed to keep students focused, connecting their coursework to intended careers.&nbsp; These programs offer internships and other opportunities so students can make connections and experience a typical workday in their intended field.&nbsp; Such programs can be useful, keeping students motivated and equipping them with valuable skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Unfortunately, today, things are running off the rails.&nbsp; Consider college preparation.&nbsp; Not all students wish to attend college, and they should not be pressured to do so.&nbsp; Yet many do set their sights on college, and today’s high school environment bombards them with opportunities–and expectations–to take college courses while still in high school.&nbsp; These include Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in which students prepare for standardized tests, and dual enrollment courses, in which the high school teacher is also an adjunct faculty member at a local community college or university. Another option is Early College Admission (ECA), in which students are bussed from high school to an area college or university.&nbsp; Cramming in as many of these early college courses as possible displaces vital high school experiences like civic education and extracurricular activities.&nbsp; With students’ anxiety already running sky-high, adding this additional pressure only makes things worse, throwing the students’ lives out of balance and crowding out opportunities to do things they enjoy, like sports, debate, and drama.&nbsp; It also limits their opportunities to make friends face to face, so they turn to social media instead.&nbsp; Meanwhile, history and government classes keep getting cut while our civic culture lies in tatters. Today, many high school graduates struggle to distinguish between reliable sources of information and baseless conspiracy theories.&nbsp; Is it worth it?

Consider a future teacher who completes two full years of college courses while still in high school.&nbsp; They sail through college in only two years and hit the job market…&nbsp; at 20 years old.&nbsp; Can any Kansan seriously say that a 20 year old teacher who cannot even legally buy alcohol is emotionally ready to teach high school students only two or three years younger?&nbsp; Such nonsense is exactly what the Kansas School Board has been encouraging lately.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Remember, college-bound students can always take their university credits when they get to college.&nbsp; The best thing high school can do is send them there well-prepared and genuinely excited about the college experience. Students choosing non-college career paths also deserve this preparation, since they, too, will need additional training or schooling beyond high school.

In the latest&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, 47.8% of respondents agreed that the primary purpose of higher education is to produce an educated citizenry, versus only 32.9% who believed that the primary goal was workforce readiness, with others remaining neutral or undecided.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansans get it. &nbsp; The question is, will the new Kansas School Board listen?

SmithNovember 20, 2024With the election of three new members this year, the Kansas State Board of Education is expected to shift more conservative on issues like the recognition of Trans students, books in the school library, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.&nbsp; Yet for all the publicity these issues receive, they do not really capture what the Kansas School Board does most of the time.There seems to be a bipartisan near-consensus behind the “career readiness” focus in schools.&nbsp; Such a focus undoubtedly has its advantages, but today it has become single-minded.&nbsp; Career readiness is crowding out vital civic education and extracurricular activities, to the detriment of students.&nbsp;&nbsp;It started out well.&nbsp; Curricula like the Olathe School District’s 21st Century programs have been designed to keep students focused, connecting their coursework to intended careers.&nbsp; These programs offer internships and other opportunities so students can make connections and experience a typical workday in their intended field.&nbsp; Such programs can be useful, keeping students motivated and equipping them with valuable skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;Unfortunately, today, things are running off the rails.&nbsp; Consider college preparation.&nbsp; Not all students wish to attend college, and they should not be pressured to do so.&nbsp; Yet many do set their sights on college, and today’s high school environment bombards them with opportunities–and expectations–to take college courses while still in high school.&nbsp; These include Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in which students prepare for standardized tests, and dual enrollment courses, in which the high school teacher is also an adjunct faculty member at a local community college or university. Another option is Early College Admission (ECA), in which students are bussed from high school to an area college or university.&nbsp; Cramming in as many of these early college courses as possible displaces vital high school experiences like civic education and extracurricular activities.&nbsp; With students’ anxiety already running sky-high, adding this additional pressure only makes things worse, throwing the students’ lives out of balance and crowding out opportunities to do things they enjoy, like sports, debate, and drama.&nbsp; It also limits their opportunities to make friends face to face, so they turn to social media instead.&nbsp; Meanwhile, history and government classes keep getting cut while our civic culture lies in tatters. Today, many high school graduates struggle to distinguish between reliable sources of information and baseless conspiracy theories.&nbsp; Is it worth it?Consider a future teacher who completes two full years of college courses while still in high school.&nbsp; They sail through college in only two years and hit the job market…&nbsp; at 20 years old.&nbsp; Can any Kansan seriously say that a 20 year old teacher who cannot even legally buy alcohol is emotionally ready to teach high school students only two or three years younger?&nbsp; Such nonsense is exactly what the Kansas School Board has been encouraging lately.&nbsp;&nbsp;Remember, college-bound students can always take their university credits when they get to college.&nbsp; The best thing high school can do is send them there well-prepared and genuinely excited about the college experience. Students choosing non-college career paths also deserve this preparation, since they, too, will need additional training or schooling beyond high school.In the latest&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, 47.8% of respondents agreed that the primary purpose of higher education is to produce an educated citizenry, versus only 32.9% who believed that the primary goal was workforce readiness, with others remaining neutral or undecided.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kansans get it. &nbsp; The question is, will the new Kansas School Board listen?

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, millions of Americans are preparing to cook the turkey, the centerpiece of the holiday feast. To ensure a safe and stress-free holiday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers essential tips for thawing your turkey to avoid foodborne illnesses.

Refrigerator thawing is the safest method, maintaining a consistent, safe temperature throughout the process. Allow about 24 hours of thawing time for every 4-5 pounds of turkey. Keep the turkey in its original wrapping and place it on a tray in the refrigerator to catch any drips.

Cold water thawing is faster than refrigerator thawing but requires more attention. Submerge the wrapped turkey in cold tap water and change the water every 30 minutes to keep it cold. Plan for about 30 minutes of thawing time per pound.

Microwave thawing is the quickest method but is best suited for smaller portions or specific cuts. Follow your microwave’s instructions carefully and cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

The USDA advises against thawing a turkey on the countertop, in hot water, or outdoors in places like the garage or porch. These methods can promote bacterial growth and increase the risk of foodborne illness.

Additional tips for preparing your turkey

If you’re short on time, you can cook your turkey directly from the frozen state. Allow about 50% more cooking time for this method. Ensure the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, as recommended by the USDA. Use a food thermometer to check the thickest part of the breast, the innermost part of the wing, and the innermost part of the thigh.

Riley County Arrest Report November 20

GEARY COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 5p.m. Tuesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Subaru Outback driven by April M.&nbsp;Kulczyk, 45, Junction City, was northbound on U.S. 77 in west-central Junction City.

The SUV crossed the center line and struck a 2009 Infiniti G37 driven by Kaleb M&nbsp;Jones-Bransford, 21, Ponca City, Oklahoma.

After impact, the SUV continued northbound, again crossing the center line and colliding head-on with a 2019 Ford Fusion driven by&nbsp; Bradley S. Linton, 56, Enterprise.

&nbsp;After the second collision, the Ford came to rest in the west ditch while the Subaru came to rest in the northbound lane of traffic. The Infiniti traveled into the west ditch and struck a guardrail.

Linton was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Johnson's Funeral Home. EMS transported Kulczyk to&nbsp;Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka. Jones-Bransford was not injured. All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Monday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a motorcycle driven by 38-year-old Seth Hardy of Riley was turning from Claflin Road onto Denison Avenue.

The motorcycle began to fishtail on the wet pavement and overturned.

EMS transported Hardy to Via Christi for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

The City of Manhattan has announced that on Wednesday, November 20, the City's Stormwater &amp; Floodplain Program will be hosting an online virtual forum from 12 – 1 p.m. 

Stormwater topics that will be discussed during the forum include common pollutants, household hazardous waste, improving water quality, erosion control efforts, and public education. Floodplain topics that will be discussed during the forum include flood hazard information, flood insurance, floodplain permitting, and natural functions of floodplains.

Riley County Seeks Community-Minded Residents to Serve on Advisory Boards

Starting today,&nbsp;Evergy Kansas customers&nbsp;who need financial assistance keeping their heat on this winter can&nbsp;apply for the 2025 Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).

Kansans can apply&nbsp;Monday, November 18 through March 31, 2025.

Evergy is one of five utilities partnering with the Kansas Department for Children and Families to help eligible Kansans receive assistance. LIEAP, administered through DCF, is a federally funded program that helps eligible households pay a portion of their home energy costs by providing a one-time per-year benefit. Customers may use it to restore or maintain electricity, natural gas, propane, and other home heating fuels.

The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) announced this week that Kansans needing assistance with winter energy bills will be able to begin applying for its Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) Monday, Nov. 18.&nbsp;Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. March 31, 2025.

“Kansas winters can be harsh and unpredictable. When temperatures fall, heating bills rise. By opening the LIEAP application period in mid-November, we’re hoping families will have the help they need to cover those higher heating bills and stay warm in their homes,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard.

LIEAP provides a one-time per year benefit to help qualifying households pay winter heating costs, whether the home is heated with electricity, natural gas, propane, or other home heating fuels. In 2024, over 40,000 Kansas households received an average benefit of $645.

To qualify, households must have an adult at the address responsible for the home's heating costs. Applicants must be at or below 150% of the federal poverty level.&nbsp;The level of benefit received varies according to household income, number of people living in the home, type of residence, type of heating fuel, and utility rates.

DCF and partnering energy companies are planning in-person events to help Kansans submit their LIEAP applications. Just after 6:30p.m., police arrested 22-year-old Zachary Davis, 22, of Fort Riley in the 1400 block of Beechwood Terrace. &nbsp;Davis was arrested on requested charges of criminal threat, aggravated battery, and criminal damage to property. He is being held on a $16,000 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.
