MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;K-State Athletics generates more than $486 million in annual economic activity for the Manhattan community and the state of Kansas according to a thorough economic impact study performed by nationally-renowned Tripp Umbach and the athletics department.

Tripp Umbach, who also recently performed a similar study with the university, utilized data from 2022-23 to conduct the study, which also revealed that more than 3,850 jobs resulted from the department’s impact. From a tax perspective, K-State Athletics generated $26.2 million in direct and indirect/induced tax payments for state and local governments in Kansas, with $21.0 million amount specifically benefiting Manhattan.

“The experience surrounding game days in Manhattan is an amazing site to see – from Aggieville, restaurants, hotels and of course our purple-filled stadiums,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “On the heels of the most recent University-wide study, we wanted to exhaustively study ourselves on various fronts, and this summary from Tripp Umbach paints a solid picture of the overall value and impact K-State Athletics has on the local economy.”

Visitors from outside of the community have a tremendous impact as more than $161 million in expenditures were accounted for in Manhattan and $201 million for the state. In addition, the 450 Wildcat student-athletes who live in the community accounted for $9.1 million of that spending.

A significant portion of K-State Athletics’ economic impact is driven by visitor and fan spending before, during, and after sporting events. As a member of the Big 12 Conference, K-State attracts fans from across the country. Visitors from inside and outside Kansas flock to Manhattan to attend football, basketball, and other games. In FY23 alone, K-State Athletics welcomed 527,280 patrons to ticketed events, with many more attending non-ticketed games and matches.

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Lexus ES driven by Lisa M.&nbsp;Good, 46, Salina, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near just east of the U.S. 77 exit.

 The driver lost control of the car due to a truck passing her and causing the car to move further to the right. The Lexus then traveled into the south ditch, went into a spin and struck a delineator post.

EMS transported Good to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Fort Riley has asked housing residents to avoid parking in the street over the next two days to allow snowplows full access to clear streets. The National Weather said a Winter Storm Warning is in effect across the entire area Tuesday tonight until late Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;

Snowfall of 4 to 7 inches will be common with locally higher amounts possible.

&nbsp;There is higher confidence in higher amounts in northern areas.

&nbsp;Winds are not expected to be overly strong with gusts of 20-25 MPH as snow is falling from the north to northeast. This could still lead to minor blowing and drifting snow given the dry and fluffy nature of the snow.

Wind chill values of -5 to -15 are forecast for late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—One person died from injuries in an accident just after 8a.m. Tuesday in Pottawatomie County.

According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff, a 2006 Pontiac Solstice driven by 66-year-old Shirley Riegel of Oklahoma was southbound on Highway 99 at North Church Road in rural Westmoreland.

The driver lost control of the car. It overturned in the west ditch and came to rest on its roof. EMS transported Riegel and a passenger 74-year-old Marsa Chandler, also of Oklahoma, to Stormont Vail in Topeka where Chandler died.

&nbsp;The accident remains under investigation, according to the sheriff's office.

Geary County officials have announced the hiring of Raquel Cinco as the County’s new Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Raquel moved to Kansas in 2019 with her husband and son.&nbsp; They chose Kansas so their son could grow up near his grandparents. Grandpa is a retired big red one soldier who, like many other Ft. Riley veterans, decided to plant roots here.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cinco started her career in Geary County at Acorns Resort (2019-2022) in Milford primarily selling the Conference Center and then selling the entire resort for weddings, reunions and any other event possible. She then became the Director of Sales at the Courtyard by Marriot (now Sonesta Essential) and Geary County Convention Center from 2022-2025.&nbsp; Having sold both event center spaces in the county and sitting on the CVB advisory board for the entirety of that time, she felt it was the perfect next move in her career to take on the Director position for the CVB.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Carl R. Ice College of Engineering selects ambassadors for 2025

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and partners around the nation today celebrated&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.eitc.irs.gov%2Feitc-central%2F50-years-of-earned-income-tax-credit/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/kcaeqUTQ4HKY3_JgnRcNJx9jprLXABUCemCrHxg7CbY=390">the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)</a>&nbsp;with the launch of this year’s EITC&nbsp;Awareness Day campaign.&nbsp;

The annual campaign, now in its 19th&nbsp;year, helps increase awareness among the millions of working Americans with a low-to-moderate income who are eligible for the EITC. The IRS estimates that roughly one in five eligible taxpayers miss out on claiming this valuable credit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

EITC was signed into law on March 29, 1975. Through numerous legislative changes, the tax break has helped encourage work and lift many financially challenged families out of poverty.&nbsp;

As of December 2024, approximately 23 million workers and families had received about $64 billion total from the EITC, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fcredits-deductions%2Findividuals%2Fearned-income-tax-credit%2Fearned-income-tax-credit-statistics/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/fPes8U5UyuNgJ5UOzgBdyO-GbYKvjCrStwt8Kl1E2Ts=390">IRS statistics</a>. EITC is for workers whose income did not exceed the following limits in 2024:

Eligible workers between the ages of 25 and 64 who have no dependents may receive up to $632 by claiming the EITC, while married but separated spouses who do not file a joint return may qualify for the EITC if they meet certain requirements.

Those with qualifying children can receive a maximum of $7,830 when claiming the EITC for tax year 2024, up from $7,430 in tax year 2023.

To get the EITC, workers must file a tax return and claim the credit on that return. They can file in a variety of ways, including by using:

• IRS Free File&nbsp;on IRS.gov.&nbsp;Qualified taxpayers can prepare and file federal income tax returns online for free using guided tax preparation software. IRS Free File also provides&nbsp;Fillable Forms&nbsp;free online for use by any taxpayer, regardless of income, who is comfortable preparing their own return. • Direct File.&nbsp;An option for eligible people in participating states to prepare and file their federal tax return online for free directly and securely with IRS. Taxpayers have access to live chat support from IRS staff. While Direct File doesn't prepare state returns, if someone lives in a participating state, Direct File guides taxpayers to a state-supported tool to prepare and file their state tax return for free. • A reputable tax professional.&nbsp;To help taxpayers&nbsp;avoid unscrupulous “ghost preparers,” the IRS offers&nbsp;tips for choosing a trustworthy tax professional, whether that’s a certified public accountant, Enrolled Agent, or a trusted person without a professional credential. Taxpayers can check whether someone is credentialed using the&nbsp;Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers, and find information on&nbsp;national tax professional groups&nbsp;at irs.gov. • Free tax preparation assistance.&nbsp;There are thousands of&nbsp;Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)&nbsp;sites across the country available to help workers eligible to claim the EITC. New this year: Duplicate dependents

Starting this filing season, the IRS will accept an e-filed return even if a dependent has already been claimed on a separate, previously filed return as long as the primary taxpayer on the second return includes a valid&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fidentity-theft-fraud-scams%2Fget-an-identity-protection-pin/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/_eZUgnGc9UESxRsdaecmhYxMoX6SaJKOSspHXsGD6Fk=390">Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)</a>.

This change will reduce the time it takes for the agency to receive the tax return and accelerate the issuance of tax refunds for those with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fnewsroom%2Firs-takes-steps-to-help-prevent-refund-delays-by-accepting-duplicate-dependent-returns-with-an-ip-pin-for-2025-filing-season-taxpayers-encouraged-to-sign-up-soon-for-ip-pin-online-account/1/01000194bd59e2e6-e87de471-e632-4eea-b318-a6613b1650b7-000000/9gtcg3iz6WgHiadN4OmyiwkZCOO7Mt2XaYcUSeBP7NY=390">duplicate dependent returns</a>. In previous years, the second tax return had to be filed by paper.

Meanwhile, taxpayers who do not have IP PINs will have their e-filed returns rejected if one of their dependents has already been claimed by another taxpayer.

Note that the use of an IP PIN does not exempt taxpayers from receiving notices questioning their right to claim certain dependents.

Claiming other valuable tax credits

Most EITC or ACTC related refunds should be available in bank accounts or on debit cards by March 3 if there are no issues with a taxpayer’s return and they chose to receive their refund by direct deposit.

The IRS estimates that roughly one in five eligible taxpayers miss out on claiming this valuable credit.&nbsp;&nbsp;EITC was signed into law on March 29, 1975. On February 10, 2025 at approximately 9:40 hrs, 9-1-1 Dispatch received a call of a fire on the outside of a residence located in the 8300 block of South K-57 Highway. This is approximately 6 miles southeast of Junction City.

Geary County Fire along with assistance from Grandview Plaza Fire responded to the scene. A pre-connect hose line from the first arriving unit was used to knock down the fire on the outside of the residence. Upon arrival of additional units, entry was made into the residence where the rest of the fire was extinguished.

The fire was contained to a basement room and a upstairs room. There was extensive heat damage throughout the residence. There was no one home at the time of the fire.

A Geary County Fire Investigator along with a Kansas State Fire Marshal investigated the scene. The cause is being listed as undetermined with a probable electrical issue being the cause.

Riley County, KS – February 10, 2025) The Riley County Appraiser’s Office has completed all studies and analysis for 2025 property valuations. The annual Change of Value Notices (CVNs) will be mailed on February 26th to property owners. The CVNs reflect changes in property values due to fluctuations in the local real estate market and/or changes made to individual properties, such as additions, demolitions, classification changes, or other improvements.&nbsp;

The real estate market in Riley County reflects an overall upward trend, with residential property values increasing by an average of 4% to 10%, while commercial property values show an average increase of 2% to 6%. The average price of all valid home sales in 2024 was $275,000 while in 2023 the average price was $265,000. 

The median home price in Riley County for 2024 was $250,000 while in 2023 it was $238,000.&nbsp;Riley County Appraiser Anna Burson explains “The median is the middle price when all home sales are listed from lowest to highest, meaning half of the homes sold for more and half sold for less. The median price is a more reliable reference point because it is less affected by outliers. It’s also important to note that Values on specific properties may not follow the general trends &nbsp;because of changes to the property, a correction of descriptive information, or the sales in the market area indicate values outside of the typical range,” said Burson.&nbsp;

As in previous years the upcoming CVN mailing will contain a form for requesting a valuation appeal. To ensure appeals are initiated by individuals authorized under Kansas Statue, all forms must be filled out, signed, and either emailed, dropped off or faxed back to the Riley County Appraisers Office within 30 days of the mailing date. The email address the forms can be emailed to is valuationappeal@rileycountyks.gov. &nbsp;The appeal phone line is only set up for general questions and to request information and will no longer be used to set up appeals. Once the completed and signed forms are received, the Appraiser’s Office will contact property owners or their representative(s) to schedule an appeal meeting.“It’s important to note that just because the property value increases does not mean the taxes will,” said Burson.&nbsp;

Appraisers are tasked with valuing homes at fair market value based on sales. Appraisers do not set tax rates. The tax bills received in December reflect an individual property’s share of the established yearly budget. The budget itself is determined by the Riley County Board of County Commissioners, school districts, municipalities, and other taxing authorities. The tax dollars needed to meet the budget are represented by the mill levy.&nbsp;“As you may have heard before, the valuation of your property determines your piece of the pie, not the size of the pie itself. Which is why it’s so important to ensure all property is valued fairly and equitably,” said Burson.

Riley County 2025 Valuation Trend

TOPEKA, Kan. - The state is preparing for the worst as this week’s back-to-back winter storms could cover the state with snow, making travel treacherous and causing power outages.

With a pair of winter storms expected this week with the first arriving tonight into tomorrow and the second storm to pass through Wednesday into Thursday.

Over the weekend Governor Laura Kelly verbally declared a disaster emergency. This declaration will allow for the use of resources to provide state assistance.

“Kansans have faced challenges due to winter storms this year,” Kelly said in a statement. “The key to meeting those challenges is to be prepared. As i did during past storms, i urge all Kansans to take measures to make sure their families are ready by making a home emergency kit and emergency plan.”

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management recommends that residents be prepared with home emergency kits, including a battery-operated radio, flashlight and batteries, extra blankets and warm clothing, nonperishable food, high-energy snacks, and drinking water, at least one gallon per person per day, for a minimum of three days.

RILEY COUNTY —A former Kansas State University basketball standout is out of jail after a weekend arrest in Manhattan.

Just after 5a.m. Sunday, police arrested 36-year-old Michael Beasley of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the Manhattan Regional Airport for marijuana possession, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report. Beasley posted the $750.00 bond and is no longer in custody.

Beasley returned to Manhattan for Saturday's Sunflower Showdown.

Former Kansas State basketball star arrested at Manhattan airport

WASHINGTON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 7p.m. Sunday in Washington County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Ford F350 driven by Dawson H.&nbsp; Flahaven, 20, Sundance, Washington, was northbound on Kansas 9 Highway one and one half miles north of Palmer.

The driver&nbsp;pulled to the east shoulder to look at the vehicle. While he was outside of pickup, an unknown vehicle struck the driver with the passenger side mirror.

&nbsp;EMS transported Flahaven to the Clay County Medical Center.&nbsp; A teen passenger was not injured.&nbsp;
