McKenzie Jackson, an 11-year-old Junction City girl, has quite a story. She is a stellar baseball player who is on her way to Nevada to play in a National baseball tournament for girls.

Jackson fell in love with the game of baseball at a young age. She began playing at the age of four years old after watching her brother and sister play. This season, she played locally for the 13U Vikings (red team), and they played their games at North Park. Currently, McKenzie and her dad, Jeff Jackson, are on their way to Sparks, Nevada, for the Baseball for All Girls National Tournament. At this tournament, McKenzie will play for the 10U Florida Bolts, the defending champions of the tournament.

“I am super excited to go,” McKenzie Jackson said. “I am excited to play with all girls and get to experience something most people don’t get to experience.”

The tournament games begin on Monday, July 21, and go through Thursday, July 24.

Amanda Jackson, McKenzies mother, said there have been some naysayers about McKenzie's choice to play baseball rather than softball. “I am going to support her in whatever route she chooses to go,” Amanda Jackson said. “Being a veteran, facing the adversity I’ve faced as a female, I’ve instilled in McKenzie, put your mind to it, and you can do it. I’ll support you.”

On the baseball diamond, McKenzie plays all over the field. She said she can play pitcher, catcher, shortstop, first base, second base, third base, and center field. She also said she bats at the top of the order on her local team. McKenzie said she’s ready for the tournament and “excited to prove that girls can do things too.”

The drive to Sparks, Nevada, is 22 hours. Jeff and McKenzie left Junction City on Thursday and should arrive Saturday evening. On Sunday, McKenzie will meet the team, and there will also be the opening ceremonies prior to the games beginning on Monday.

Jeff Jackson, McKenzie's dad, said that they fundraised for the trip and McKenzie received a lot of support. “It has been a whirlwind,” Jeff said. They did coin drop events at Freedom Fest and at a Junction City Brigade game this summer to help offset travel costs and the cost of uniforms.

McKenzie is excited to showcase her skills at the Baseball For All Girls National Tournament and plans to keep playing baseball moving forward.

Window Replacement Project to begin at the Courthouse Plaza East Building

The 31st Annual Junction City Rodeo is happening this weekend, Friday and Saturday night, July 18th &amp; 19th, starting at 8:00 P.M. at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena, located at 1025 Spring Valley Rd in Junction City.

The rodeo will feature: bareback riding, calf roping, breakaway roping, team roping, barrel racing, and bull riding.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Friday night's theme is Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night . On Saturday night, the theme is Red, White &amp; Blue Night.

There will be events for this kids at the rodeo as well. Kids events include the calf scramble, the boot scramble, and mutton busting.

Tickets to the Junction City Rodeo can be purchased at the gate. Adults are $10.00, kids ages 6-12 are $5.00, and those five and under are free.&nbsp;

Junction City Rodeo is this Weekend

LENEXA, KAN. (JULY 18, 2025) – Today, at the Flint Hills Regional Council (FHRC) board meeting in Junction City, Kansas, EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy presented a $1 million award to FHRC for their selection to receive funding for their Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF). Macy was joined by Kansas State Representative Nathan Butler and FHRC Board President Trish Giordano.

"Today, we are thrilled to present this award for the Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund to the Flint Hills Regional Council, a testament to their unwavering commitment to transforming our community,"&nbsp;Macy said. "Having previously received an Assessment Grant, FHRC has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision in identifying and preparing sites for revitalization. This new funding will empower them to continue their vital work, turning environmental challenges into opportunities for growth and renewal."

“This $1 million EPA grant is a game changer for the Flint Hills region,”&nbsp;Giordano said. “It empowers us to transform abandoned properties into thriving community assets, sparking revitalization and creating new jobs. Together, we’re paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future.”

The $1 million grant will be used to capitalize a revolving loan fund (RLF), from which FHRC will provide up to three loans and up to two subgrants to support cleanup activities. Grant funds also will be used to establish the RLF, market the program, and support community engagement activities. RLF activities will focus on Chase, Geary, Lyon, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, and Wabaunsee counties in Kansas, with a focus on the Kansas cities of Herington, Junction City, and Manhattan.

Flint Hills Regional Council presented with $1 Million Check from EPA Region 7

On Monday, July 21, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to close the eastbound I-70 entrance ramp at exit&nbsp;299/J-Hill Road for reconstruction in Junction City. This closure is in addition to the following ramp closures:

The contractor has scheduled the I-70 entrance ramp at eastbound exit&nbsp;299&nbsp;to reopen by the end of August.

This final phase, Phase Three, of reconstruction is scheduled to be completed by December, weather permitting. Wildcat Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the prime contractor for this $30 million project.

I-70 entrance ramp -  Exit 299/J-Hill Road to close Monday for reconstruction 

Abilene is ready to add another national accolade to its growing list. On Thursday, Newsweek announced the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum &amp; Boyhood Home inn, as a nominee in its 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Presidential Attraction. This marks the first time Abilene has been honored by Newsweek.

EPA has selected Flint Hills Regional Council Inc. for a Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) Grant. It will be used to capitalize a revolving loan fund from which the council will provide up to three loans and up to two subgrants to support cleanup activities.

Grant funds also will be used to establish the RLF, market the program, and support community engagement activities. RLF activities will focus on Chase, Geary, Lyon, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, and Wabaunsee counties in Kansas, with a focus on the Kansas cities of Herington, Junction City, and Manhattan.

The presentation will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 18, at 726 N. Washington St. in Junction City.

Chapman Police have announced a new officer to their department.&nbsp; &nbsp;The newest officer is Officer Dash, a German Shepherd  that is assigned to Officer Saunto. 

Officer Saunto and Dash are currently in training together. When they are done with their training, they will be trained in narcotics detection, article searches and tracking. A lot of time and effort has gone into restarting the K9 program. This couldn’t be done without some great support and donations.&nbsp;

In a social media report on Wednesday, the Kansas Highway Patrol posted that they stopped a vehicle for speeding in the I-70 construction zone near Junction City in Geary County. According to the ticket posted on social media, the vehicle was a 2022 KIA. The car was traveling 100 miles per hour in a 60 miles per hour zone in the construction zone. 

The driver was ticketed for exceeding the maximum speed limits and driving in the left lane in a no-passing zone. 

Along with the KHP, the Junction City Police Department and Geary County Sheriff's Office posted safety reminders as well. The JCPD posted, "Please slow down, follow posted signs, and never pass in no-passing areas."

Fort Riley’s annual full-scale emergency preparedness exercise is set for Wednesday, July 16. The exercise provides an opportunity to test and evaluate the installation’s emergency response procedures and preparedness.

Fort Riley residents, employees, and community members can expect to see an increase in emergency response activity and alerts as part of the exercise. The primary exercise-related events will take place in the vicinity of the Trooper Access Control Point and Victory Chapel.

Some intersections in that area of post may be blocked temporarily, but traffic to the post exchange, commissary, and child development centers should not be impacted. The exercise will begin in the morning and continue through the afternoon.

The exercise provides an opportunity to test and evaluate the installation’s emergency response procedures and preparedness.Fort Riley residents, employees, and community members can expect to see an increase in emergency response activity and alerts as part of the exercise. The primary exercise-related events will take place in the vicinity of the Trooper Access Control Point and Victory Chapel.Some intersections in that area of post may be blocked temporarily, but traffic to the post exchange, commissary, and child development centers should not be impacted. The exercise will begin in the morning and continue through the afternoon.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that agricultural producers and private landowners can now enroll in the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (Grassland CRP). 

The sign-up runs from, July 14 - August 8, 2025.

Grassland CRP, offered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), is a voluntary working lands conservation program that enables participants to conserve grasslands while also continuing most grazing and haying practices.

Grassland CRP emphasizes support for grazing operations, plant and animal biodiversity, and grasslands and land with shrubs and forbs under the greatest threat of conversion.

“Through the conservation of America’s essential grasslands, Grassland CRP supports continued agricultural productivity while at the same time prioritizing private lands stewardship,” said FSA Administrator Bill Beam. “By offering landowners the best of both worlds — economic viability and working lands preservation — Grassland CRP provisions support USDA’s commitment to Farmers First.”

CRP, USDA’s flagship conservation program, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. For four decades, CRP has provided financial and technical support to agricultural producers and landowners whose accepted acres are placed under contract for 10-15 years and who agree to voluntarily convert the land to beneficial vegetative cover to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion and support wildlife habitat. 

The American Relief Act, 2025, extended provisions for CRP through September 30, 2025.

Currently, more than 25.8 million acres are enrolled in CRP, with nearly 9.7 million acres in Grassland CRP. On May 12, FSA opened General and Continuous CRP enrollment for 2025. FSA is currently reviewing submitted offers and will announce accepted offers at a later date. Due to the 27-million-acre statutory cap, only 1.8 million acres are available for all CRP enrollment this fiscal year.

Landowners and producers interested in Grassland CRP should contact their local USDA Service Center to learn more or apply for the program before the Aug. 8 deadline.

DONIPHAN COUNTY—A Manhattan man died in an accident just before 6:30p.m. Monday in Doniphan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Peterbilt semi driven by Donnell D.&nbsp;Martin, 54, Manhattan, Kansas, was westbound on U.S. 36 one half mile east of Blackjack Road. The semi traveled off the roadway to the north, struck a culvert and fence and came to rest into a cornfield&nbsp;

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Chapel Oaks. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

This is day 12 and the final day of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

The Kansas wheat harvest is 93 percent complete, near 96 percent complete last year, but ahead of 88 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending July 13, 2025.&nbsp;

Overall yields for the 2025 crop ranged from slightly below average to excellent, depending on region and weather impacts. While many areas reported strong test weights and good protein levels, rain during harvest lowered grain quality in some locations, leading to yield losses and occasional field abandonment.

Erik Lange, Executive Vice President / Chief Operations Officer for MKC and Interim General Manager for Producer Ag, LLC — a grain marketing joint venture between Mid-Kansas Cooperative (MKC) and CHS Inc. — broke down this year’s wheat harvest for their 55 locations in 8 regions across the state of Kansas.

“We’ve been two days from done for the past 20 days,” said Lange, adding that the rain is welcome, but the timing has affected wheat quality and efforts to take harvest in. “Overall, it has been a good harvest, meeting or exceeding expectations from a yield standpoint.”&nbsp;

In the CHS southern plains region of Greeley, Wallace, Logan and Wichita counties, this year’s wheat quality is good, with test weights averaging over 60 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging 11.75%, and yields are average to above average, with some pockets a little lower due to drought and stand issues at seeding.

In Seward and Meade counties, test weights are averaging 60.5 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging 11%, and yields were excellent, above average except for some isolated areas with early season drought and stand issues.

In south central Kansas, Sumner, Harper and Cowley counties, test weights have dropped after rains on the ripe wheat, but the region is averaging 58 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging 11%, and yields are varied by location — average to slightly below average overall. There was some spots with wheat streak mosaic and related viruses that caused yield and quality loss. Early season drought and stand issues also affected yields. Locations are still taking grain in south central and central Kansas and hope to be finished by mid-week.

In Reno, Harvey, Butler, Sedgwick and southern Marion counties, test weights have been affected by the rains, ending with an average of 57.5 pounds per bushel. Protein averaged 10.9%. This region — especially the northern parts — was above average, with great yields, good stands and good grain fill conditions.

In McPherson, Rice and northern Marion counties, there were some exceptional yields, due to good grain fill conditions and the cool, wet spring. Test weights average 57.7 pounds and protein is 12%. However, due to rains during harvest, there are some fields in McPherson and Sumner counties that will be abandoned and not harvested.

Yields have been good to excellent in the Dickinson/Clay county region, however, there was some WSMV in the southern part of the area that caused up to 30 to 40 percent yield loss. Test weights averaged 58 ½ - 59 pounds and protein was 11.5%.

In northeast Kansas, yields were excellent in northern Pottawatomie County and good in Riley and Wabaunsee counties, but only a small fraction of wheat is grown in this area. Test weights averaged 57.5 to 58 after rain on mature wheat, and they don’t test protein in this region.

In the Mid-West Fertilizer region of Labette and Neosho counties, both hard and soft wheat yields were average to below average and quality suffered from rain during harvest, with some wheat laying down. Test weights have been challenged by the rain on mature wheat, and there is some abandonment.

Day 12: Kansas Wheat Harvest report

After serving 20 years in the Army, Barton graduate Timothy Sifuentes was ready for the next chapter of his life, and Barton Community College at Grandview Plaza’s program helped him on his journey to complete OSHA certifications and an associate degree in Emergency Management/Homeland Security.

While already employed as a safety professional, Sifuentes wanted to take his credentials and knowledge base to another level.&nbsp;

“I felt obligated to continue my studies, and my focus on a career in the safety field worked out well for me as Barton offers OSHA classes and an Emergency Management/Homeland Security degree,” he said.&nbsp;

The Fort Riley LSEC program was also a benefit to him as he was able to complete most general education classes for the degree at no cost.

“The Fort Riley community is supported by Barton’s excellent professors and fantastic timetable,” he said.

Sifuentes received his associate of applied science in Emergency Management/Homeland Security in December, and he credits Barton’s Grandview Plaza program, which offers select OSHA classes for active-duty soldiers, their dependents, veterans, and Department of Defense employees at no cost, with getting him certifications as well as mitigating elective credit hours for the EMHS degree.

While Barton’s location at Grandview Plaza is a satellite campus there is also a site on-base at Fort Riley. &nbsp;Sifuentes said the whole team of support staff on base and at Grandview Plaza was a great benefit to him.

“My advisor was one of the best academic advisors I have ever worked with, in my honest opinion,” he said.

Sifuentes has no plans of stopping. He is currently working on his bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management/Homeland Security.

“I work in the safety industry currently, and I want to expand my experience, education, and skill set,” he said. “My ultimate objective is to pass my Certified Safety Professional exam and submit my application to the Board of CSPs.”

Sifuentes encourages others eligible to take advantage of Barton’s opportunities.

“For people who want to advance their careers and professional growth, Barton is a fantastic place to start,” he said.

Barton at Grandview Plaza student discovers new passion after military career

At 10:30 a.m. this past Saturday, the Geary County Rural Fire Department was dispatched to a metal shed on fire call on K177 approximately four miles south of I-70. Wabaunsee County Fire and Alta Vista City Fire arrived on the scene first and began suppression of the fire. When Geary County Rural Fire arrived on the scene, firefighters assisted with suppression of the fire and also set up water operations.  Riley County, Council Grove, and Dwight Fire Departments brought water to the scene. A total of five different departments responded to assist with the fire.

Assistant Fire Chief for Geary County Curt Janke said the State Fire Marshall was called in for an investigation. The cause of the fire is undetermined. The fire originated on the east end of the shed, the maintenance area. Chemicals such as Roundup and 2,4-D were in the building.

The shed was considered a total loss. A pick-up burned up from the fire. The scene was cleared by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

** On Saturday, one Alta Vista City firefighter was transported to Morris County Hospital for heat exhaustion and dehydration. That firefighter has been treated and released.

On Sunday at 7:30 p.m., Geary County was dispatched to the same location because the fire had rekindled. (Alta Vista City and County both responded again as well). Heavy black smoke was coming from the area. A power pole that had burned on Saturday rekindled the fire. On Sunday, the fire burned up grass, nearby vehicles, old abandoned tires, and hay bales.

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges was on the call and said the scene was cleared by 9:30 p.m. Sunday. 

“It was good teamwork by everyone involved,” Berges said. “Everyone knew their role and there was good cooperation by all departments.”

RILEY COUNTY —A Manhattan woman was injured in a pedestrian accident just after noon on Friday.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Jason Bryant, 26, Manhattan, struck&nbsp; 24-year-old Samantha Taylor of Manhattan in a cross walk in the 800 Block of N 3rd Place.&nbsp;

EMS transported her to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Bryant was issued a citation for failure to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk.&nbsp;
