MANHATTAN —&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/directory/faculty_directory/griffin/">Terry Griffin</a>, professor of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/">agricultural economics</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University and a precision agriculture economist, has been appointed to the second cohort of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.weather.gov/swag">Space Weather Advisory Group</a>, a crucial advisory body for the White House Subcommittee on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sworm.gov/">Space Weather Operations, Research and Mitigation</a>, or SWORM. His expertise will contribute to national preparedness against space weather events through 2027.

The group, or SWAG, advises SWORM on improving the ability of the U.S. to prepare for, mitigate, respond to&nbsp;and recover from space weather events such as solar flares and geomagnetic storms. SWAG also advises improving the flow of knowledge and technology between research and operational applications and will develop and implement an integrated space weather observation strategy including subsequent updates and reevaluations.

“As a representative of our nation's end-users who are directly affected by space weather, I have been estimating potential economic damages to agriculture, construction, drilling and mining when GPS technology, also known internationally as Global Navigation Satellite System, signal degradation occurs,” Griffin said.

Griffin’s impactful research, publications, and presentations on solar storm effects on precision agriculture includes&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news-and-publications/news/stories/2025/04/agriculture-solar-weather-gps-outage.html">his work on the Gannon Storm in May 2024</a>, which occurred while many producers were planting corn. Midwestern farms were particularly susceptible to Global Navigation Satellite System, or GNSS, signal degradation, which significantly impacted the accuracy of precision agriculture technologies.

This vulnerability was heightened by fewer available fieldwork days due to unfavorable weather, further delaying planting.

"Currently, about 70% of planted acres in the United States rely on equipment that uses GPS automated guidance to make straight parallel lines through the field," Griffin said. "We no longer exclusively use physical row markers, and the equipment is getting bigger to the point that we can no longer operate when the GPS is taken away. Not all farms were affected, but those that were lost on average about $17,000 per farm. It's not catastrophic, but they'll miss it."

Along with other members of SWAG, Griffin will continue work on a user-needs survey to identify the space weather research, observations, forecasting&nbsp;and modeling advances required to improve space weather products.

The timing of this effort is of great importance at this time in solar maximum.

“Although GPS has been used for agricultural purposes since the mid-1990s, we are just now experiencing heightened amounts of solar activity during the GNSS era," Griffin said. "Automated guidance technology was commercialized during the tail end of Solar Cycle 23 then the next solar cycle was relatively calm in comparison. It is increasingly likely that the next two growing seasons will have adverse GNSS outages for the farming community.”

The Friday schedule includes the WEEE Entertainment Carnival opening at 6 p.m., the judging of the Swine Exhibits at 7 p.m. and the Kaw Valley Rodeo at 8 p.m.

Riley County Fair week

GEARY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Thursday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Tesla driven by Terry L.&nbsp;Roehr, 73, Colorado Springs, was entering Interstate 70 from the&nbsp;eastbound on ramp at Kansas 177. The vehicle was traveling too fast for the conditions and hydroplaned.&nbsp; The Tesla collided with a 2002 Ford pickup driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Sawyer G.&nbsp; Ibarra, 16, Alma.&nbsp;

EMS transported both driver to Via Christi in Manhattan. Three passengers in the Tesla were not injured. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Irwin Army Community Hospital Commander addresses MAC in Junction City

(MANHATTAN, Kan. – July 24, 2025)&nbsp;— This year’s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cityofmhk.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e92cc4cc1e09dc1dafa7ba9da&amp;id=7104a66bf8&amp;e=8c33f27c6f">Furniture Amnesty Day</a>&nbsp;(FAD) event has been postponed by the City of Manhattan for one week, and it will now start at&nbsp;8 a.m. Friday, August 1&nbsp;in City Park.

City officials announced that the event is being postponed due to a forecast of excessive rainfall (3 to 5 inches) overnight and continuing Friday, July 25, leading to possible flooding. A Flood Watch is in effect for the Manhattan area through Friday afternoon.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we worked to make this postponement decision,” said Andrew Lawson, public information officer for the City. “Furniture Amnesty Day is a very complex event involving many community partners, so we needed to make a decision before the heaviest of the predicted rainfall came tonight. We urge everyone not to put out furniture tonight, and to contact us if you need to make alternate arrangements for leases that may be terminating within the next week that affect your donation.”

FAD is a free community event that gives people the opportunity to donate or pick up used furniture at no cost. Anyone can participate. There are no income requirements or forms to fill out to choose from the donated items.

Registration for furniture shopping begins at&nbsp;8 a.m. Aug. 1&nbsp;in City Park. Free shopping will be scheduled in 15-minute time slots from&nbsp;11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

FAD participants can return to the park at their scheduled time and take home up to five (5) furniture items at no cost. Items in a set, such as a table and chairs, only count as one item. No additional paperwork is needed.

Volunteers will begin pickup routes at&nbsp;7 a.m. Friday, August 1&nbsp;and will continue gathering and dropping off furniture throughout the day, so there always will be a fresh selection of goods available. Shoppers must be able to haul away any furniture they select.&nbsp;Delivery service is not available.

The deadline to request furniture pickup closed at&nbsp;5 p.m. Wednesday, July 23&nbsp;and will&nbsp;not&nbsp;be extended. For those who did not meet the deadline to request a furniture pickup, donations can still be dropped off at Miller Field in City Park from&nbsp;8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, August 1.

Acceptable donations include: Sofas; couches; desks; recliners; dressers; headboards; chairs; entertainment centers; and end, coffee, and kitchen tables.

Donations that will not be accepted include:&nbsp;FAD will not be accepting mattresses, dishwashers, pianos, grills, refrigerators, washers, dryers, televisions, monitors, computers, lamps, or other electronics.

Any furniture left unclaimed at&nbsp;4 p.m.&nbsp;on the day of the event will be open to the general public without registration. At&nbsp;4:30 p.m., the event will end. Any remaining pieces will be hauled away by staff and volunteers.

If weather prevents the event from taking place on August 1, it will be canceled.

National Day of the Cowboy event will be Saturday

The Geary County Food Pantry is already serving the public at their new location, but they will host a grand opening event on Saturday, July 26. The grand opening celebration will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.&nbsp;at their new location, 700A W. 7th Street in Junction City.

The Food Pantry held a soft opening earlier this year on May 29, while miscellaneous work around the facility was finished.

Call centers see uptick in reports of attempted scams

Kansas City, Mo. - July 24, 2025 – Evergy is warning customers to be vigilant after an increase in attempted scams this summer.

Scammers are becoming more deceptive thanks to technology, using everything from fake websites to cloned phone numbers to third-party payment apps and more to rip off Evergy customers.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has been notified of two separate events in which horses in Kansas have tested positive for reportable diseases. The agency has responded to both incidents according to the state’s disease response plan.

In mid-July KDA was notified by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory that a horse in Sedgwick County has tested positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). The facility and all horses on the premises were placed under quarantine until further testing of all exposed horses was completed. Preliminary results indicate that there are additional horses testing positive. EIA is an untreatable disease and response actions are being made accordingly. The remaining horses at the facility that tested negative will be observed and retested in 60 days. The positive symptomatic horse did die from complications associated with EIA.

KDA has identified a prescribed surveillance area within one-quarter mile of the affected premises and is working with local officials and horse owners to identify any other horses that may have been within that surveillance area.

EIA does not affect people, but it can spread to horses, mules and donkeys. The virus can be transmitted from an infected equine to a “clean” equine by biting flies, the use of unsterilized or contaminated medical instruments, or through a blood transfusion. Clinical signs of EIA include fever, anemia and edema; however, affected horses may not show symptoms. EIA can be fatal in horses. All infected horses, including those which are asymptomatic, are carriers of the disease.

There are typically a small number of cases of EIA in the United States every year, although the disease is common in other parts of the world. EIA is controlled in the U.S. by regular testing before traveling across state lines and/or exhibition. The test for EIA is commonly called a Coggins test. This spring, KDA expanded regulations to require a negative Coggins test be completed within the previous 12 months for horses that are changing ownership or are used for exhibition purposes. These regulations are in addition to the previous requirement of a negative Coggins test for horses entering Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has received notification of a confirmed case of West Nile virus (WNV) in a horse in Harper County.

WNV is a virus that can infect humans, horses, birds and other species. Horses infected with WNV can have symptoms that range from depression, loss of appetite and fever to severe neurologic signs such as incoordination, weakness, inability to rise, and hypersensitivity to touch or sound. WNV can be fatal in horses. If you see symptoms of WNV in your horse, contact your veterinarian immediately.

WNV is a preventable disease, with annual vaccinations that have proven highly effective. The infected animal was not current with its vaccinations, but is responding favorably to treatment. All horse owners should consult with their local veterinarians and make a vaccination plan for their horses.

The virus is carried and transmitted by mosquitoes; although both horses and humans are susceptible, it is not directly contagious from horse to horse or from horse to human. Horse owners should work diligently to reduce the mosquito populations and their possible breeding areas, including removing stagnant water sources and using mosquito repellents. WNV is a reportable disease in Kansas, which means the law requires any confirmed case must be reported to the KDA Division of Animal Health.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has announced that all public school districts and many private schools across the state will participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2025-2026 academic year.

These federal programs provide free or reduced-price meals to eligible students, helping ensure that Kansas children receive nutritious meals during the school day regardless of family income.

Households may apply for benefits at any time during the school year. Application forms and information letters are available through each school district or private school, and additional copies can be obtained from the principal’s office. For applications to be approved, they must include all required eligibility information as outlined in the application instructions.

Children from households that receive Food Assistance, Temporary Assistance for Families (TAF), or benefits through the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) are automatically eligible for free meals. These households will be notified by their school unless they choose to decline benefits. If a household does not receive a notification, they should submit an application with the required case number and an adult signature.

Children participating in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program or receiving certain Medicaid benefits may also qualify. Notifications will be sent to households approved under Medicaid guidelines.

Other eligible groups include children in the Head Start Program, the Migrant Education Program, or those identified as homeless or runaway by the district’s liaison. Foster children under state or court custody also automatically qualify for free meals, although eligibility does not extend to other household members unless a complete application is submitted listing all residents.

For families not participating in assistance programs, eligibility is determined based on income and household size. Applications must include all household members, current income, sources of income, and the last four digits of the Social Security number of the adult who signs the application (or a statement if no SSN is available).

All applications are reviewed by a designated school official. Parents who disagree with the eligibility determination may appeal the decision informally or request a formal hearing. Contact your local school district or private school for hearing information.

Reduced price and free school meals available for Kansas students

The City Commission recently voted to approve a resolution&nbsp;&nbsp;determining it is advisable to issue Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRBs) for the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cityofmhk.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e92cc4cc1e09dc1dafa7ba9da&amp;id=8bf910b67e&amp;e=8c33f27c6f">Wareham Hall</a>&nbsp;project and authorizing an economic development agreement with Wareham Hall Ventures, LLC for IRB property tax abatement.

Wareham Hall Ventures requested an amendment of Resolution No. 120523-A, which previously authorized a sales exemption for the project.

This amendment increases the project budget from $25 million to&nbsp;$40 million, changes the developer from the Wareham Hall Renovation Fund to the newly created Wareham Hall Ventures, and authorizes a property tax exemption.

Wareham Hall applied for the property tax abatement through the City’s&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://cityofmhk.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e92cc4cc1e09dc1dafa7ba9da&amp;id=df253fce9e&amp;e=8c33f27c6f">IRB Policy</a>. It is requesting a 10-year, performance-based property tax abatement (up to 100%) for the project. Performance metrics include minimum financial investment, number of ticketed patrons, and the percent of non-local patrons.

IRBs issued for sales tax exemption have no financial risk to the City. Local taxing entities will receive no taxes from the property for the next 10 years if Wareham Hall meets its metrics.

Wareham Hall also must make public infrastructure improvements to City sidewalks, streets, alleys, and other infrastructure to facilitate the project. The developer has asked for a&nbsp;$350,000&nbsp;cash incentive to pay for these public improvements, which will be taken from a fund to be determined by the City Commission. A public infrastructure development agreement with the developer will be considered at a future City Commission meeting.

Just before 11p.m. Sunday, police arrested Bryan Painter, 38, of Manhattan&nbsp; on a Riley County District Court warrant for four counts of identity theft, two counts of criminal use of a financial card, four counts of unlawful acts with a computer, theft and attempted theft.

 This warrant stems from reports filed in December 2024 and January 2025. Painter was issued a total bond of $15,000 and remains confined in the Riley County Jail.&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report a suspect, later identified as 23 year-old Mason Moon of Manhattan, allegedly operated a vehicle while intoxicated, fled from police, crashed the vehicle then fled the area.&nbsp;A 2-year-old girl, and two 1-year-old boys were allegedly in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Early Saturday, Moon was arrested on requested charges of aggravated battery, three counts of aggravated endangering a child, driving under the influence; 3rd conviction, flee or attempt to elude, and failure to stop at accident. Moon is being held on a $50,000 bond, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If fuel leaks inside the engine compartment and there's a hot engine or exhaust components, it could increase the risk of a fire.

Ford has continued to investigate the issue. As part of the ongoing process, the automaker looked at corrosion as a contributing factor to fuel injector cracks between April and May 2025.

Ford identified injector cracking on eight vehicles that experienced underhood fires. Six of the vehicles didn't have updated engine control software. The automaker isn't aware of any injuries related to the fires.

Earlier this month Ford's field review committee decided to issue a recall for certain vehicles to update their engine control software for free until a final remedy is available.

Ford recall: Bronco Sport, Escape due to fuel injector issue

Rain moved through the area on Friday night, but the Junction City Rodeo went on as planned. Despite the muddy arena, a large crowd was in attendance for the first of two nights at the 31st annual Junction City Rodeo.

The rodeo once again begins tonight at 8:00 p.m. at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for kids 6-12, and children five and under are admitted free.
