Fire west of MHK damages baler, destroys prairie hay meadow

RILEY COUNTY - A baler caught fire on Thursday afternoon, destroying approximately 2 acres of prairie hay meadow west of Manhattan.

Shortly before 4:30 pm, Riley County Fire District #1 was dispatched to the 6600 block of Anderson Avenue on the report of an out of control fire caused by a baler malfunction.

When crews arrived on the scene, they worked quickly to contain the fire before it could threaten any structures.

Damage from the fire was contained to the meadow and baler.

Four fire trucks and nine volunteers responded to the scene from the Keats, Ogden and Riley fire stations.

The fire was extinguished by 5:10 pm, with final fire crews clearing the scene shortly after 5:30 pm. No injuries were reported with this fire.
