Heat advisory will run from Monday afternoon into Tuesday evening

&nbsp;All three zones of Milford Lake were placed under a blue green algae warning this past Thursday. That includes Zone A in Dickinson and Geary Counties, Zone B in Geary County and Zone C in Geary and Clay Counties.

A Warning status indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.  Contact with the water should be avoided.

Manhattan area residents had the opportunity to get rid of furniture they no longer need and those in need of furniture had the opportunity to pick up used furniture for free.&nbsp;

“So, it's really cool, that K-State and the city management, partnership...With City ordinances...city ordinances are getting handed out left and right when people are throwing the furniture out at the end of July. That's the big move in date for a lot of students...move out date a lot of students and a lot of residents in Manhattan. So basically, they&nbsp;put their furniture out. We have volunteers go around, pick up but also the really cool thing to do is we bring it to a central location such as city park right here and a while communities that are interested in getting furniture, allow them to get it for free.” K-State Student Body Vice President and City of Manhattan Intern, Jeff Ebeck says.&nbsp;

Furniture Amnesty Day was open to all residents regardless of income or employment status. The only requirement was residents had to find their own way to haul the furniture to their residence.&nbsp;

Registration was required to schedule a timeslot to choose furniture, so as to avoid overcrowding the area during the selection process.&nbsp;

At 4:00 pm residents were permitted to choose from the remaining furniture without registration. &nbsp;

Any remaining furniture, if in very good condition was donated to Habitat for Humanity Restore, with remaining older or well used furniture was placed in a dumpster for removal.&nbsp;

Furniture Amnesty Day is held on the final Friday each July.&nbsp;

🎥: Hundreds of pieces of furniture find new homes at 'Furniture Amnesty Day'

MANHATTAN — Single tickets will go on sale for more than 20 shows in the upcoming&nbsp;<a href="https://mccain.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">McCain Performance Series</a>. According to K-State News and Communication Services tickets will go on sale online only at&nbsp;<a href="http://mccain.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">mccain.k-state.edu</a>&nbsp;beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, and then will be available 24 hours a day.&nbsp;

McCain had previously announced that single tickets would be available on Aug. 1 but has pushed the date back due to unforeseen delays. Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 10, tickets can be purchased in person or by calling 785-532-6428 from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. In-person tickets can be purchased at McCain's Ticket Services Office in the auditorium's newly expanded lobby. "We are offering 22 fabulous events in 2022-2023 McCain Performance Series, bringing K-State and the Flint Hills region the best in music, dance, theatre, comedy and family fun," said Todd Holmberg, McCain Auditorium executive director. "Our lineup has something for everyone to enjoy."&nbsp;

There will be special free train rides on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 2. on the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. The excursion railroad will offer free rides on a first-come, first-served basis to passengers who come to the Rock Island Depot at 200 SE 5th in Abilene between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. that day.

Trains will be powered by the prize of the railroad's fleet of engines, the century-old Santa Fe 3415 steam locomotive.

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said next Tuesday’s free trips will be shorter than the railroad’s normal two-hour round-trip excursion between Abilene and Enterprise. Instead, next Tuesday’s short rides will run from the depot to a stopping point just beyond Jeep Road. The shorter rides will last approximately 20-30 minutes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This is our ‘inflation fighter’ special,” Boelling said, “which is being offered as a thank-you to all our fans and to introduce our railroad to prospective passengers.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

But in addition to A&amp;SV railfans, Boelling said that the August 2 trains will have some other special passengers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Journalists from across Kansas will ride on the A&amp;SV as part of the “Kansas Media Event,” a two-day convention of regional travel writers, who will meet in Abilene on August 2 and 3. Boelling said that another special feature of the trains that day will include a cattle car of Texas Longhorns that will be driven to the Rock Island depot that afternoon to symbolize Abilene’s legacy as the destination point of the Chisholm Trail in the 1800s.&nbsp;

Eagle Radio / Salina Post seeks on-air news director

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent robbery in Manhattan.

Just before 2p.m. Thursday, police&nbsp;filed a report for aggravated assault and aggravated robbery in the 20 block of Waterway Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 17-year-old boy and a 45-year-old woman reported a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old robbed the 17-year-old victim at gunpoint of his iPhone then shot at the teen and woman in their car as they followed the suspects driving away from the scene.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent robbery in Manhattan.Just before 2p.m. Thursday, police&nbsp;filed a report for aggravated assault and aggravated robbery in the 20 block of Waterway Place in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.A 17-year-old boy and a 45-year-old woman reported a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old robbed the 17-year-old victim at gunpoint of his iPhone then shot at the teen and woman in their car as they followed the suspects driving away from the scene.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp;

The Perez family recently PCS'd to Fort Riley, where Reilani's dad, Chief Warrant Officer 3, Aladino Perez has been stationed, they moved here from U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys.

Reilani says she will share part of her winnings with her family who have supported her and her education. She also plans to buy something for herself, but has yet to decide what that is.

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just 4p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan.

&nbsp;According to the Riley Police Department activity report, a 2013 GMC Terrain driven by David O'Quinn, 67,&nbsp; Manhattan, made a left turn off of Casement Road onto Hayes Drive.&nbsp; The SUV hopped a curb, traveled through grass and struck a 2016 Nissan Altima driven by Alexis Winter, 19, of Manhattan, who was waiting to make a left turn off of Hayes Drive.

The impact caused the Altima to strike a 2021 Ford Econoline driven by Roxanne Harper, 30, of Manhattan.

Investigators determined O'Quinn had experienced a medical emergency while driving which caused the SUV crash. EMS&nbsp; transported him to Via Christi for a head injury and treatment of the medical emergency.&nbsp; The RCPD reported no other injuries.

Manhattan man hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash

Junction City Fire Chief Jason Lankas issued a statement Thursday on the Wednesday evening fire on W. 7th Street.

JCFD responded to residential working fire at 516 W 7th St. on July 27 at 7:25 p.m. Dispatch advised that a suicidal subject that was going to shoot anyone who walked through the door and himself. It was unknown if any other subject in the residence. 

O/A saw smoke coming from the eves of the structure from the1st and 2nd floor. . Fire crews entered the first floor for fire control, with a second crew assigned to second floor to check for fire and ventilation. There was a single fatality found on first floor, code black. Once confirmed code black the Kansas State Fire Marshal's office was called. 

KSFM took over investigations once on scene and an engine crew remained on scene to assist with fire extinguishment and overhaul. No first responder injuries were reported. 

Multiple agencies were involved to help assist with this scene. The Junction City Fire Department thanked the JCPD, GESO, GEFD, and Topeka Fire Investigator with Benny their accelerant detection canine, along with KSFM for helping with this investigation.

Fire crews were called out to the 500 block of 7th Street to the report of a structure fire.

Crews arriving on the scene located found a structure on fire and a man at the residence threatening first responders.

The fire has been extinguished and upon initial search of the structure crews found one male deceased.&nbsp;

Crews from Junction City Fire, Geary County Rural Fire, Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene. Kansas Fire Marshal has arrived on scene to assist with the investigation.&nbsp; The street will remain closed as the investigation is completed.

Washington, D.C.- First District Congressman Tracey Mann, Ranking Member on the House Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and Chris Pappas, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, introduced bipartisan legislation that will enhance protections for whistleblowers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Whistleblower claims must be taken seriously – especially regarding issues concerning our nation’s heroes,” Rep. Mann said. “As members of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, we have a duty to address problems like the lack of structure and support for whistleblowers that could hinder veterans. Our legislation will create checks and balances for offices managing whistleblower complaints – an effort that will simultaneously use taxpayer dollars more efficiently and protect whistleblowers. I appreciate Representative Pappas leading this bill with me which will result in more transparency and a higher standard of service at the VA."

Rep. Mann introduces whistle blower bill to protect veterans

JUNCTION CITY —Numerous Geary Community Hospital doctors, nurses and staff are out sick due to COVID-19. 

Margaret Grismer, Interim Hospital Administrator, told JC Post that Dr. Tom Craig "is holding down the fort for us and we're very appreciative of that. " She noted that one doctor is away on drill and another one is on vacation. "And the remaining physicians all have COVID, so we have five providers out this week with COVID." 

Grismer also confirmed that many nurses and support staff are also out. "We have many of our staff in every department that are currently experiencing COVID right now."

The absences will impact treatment of patients and the financial bottom line for the hospital. "Luckily those services are remaining open and available due to Stormont Vail stepping in and sending us help, "said Grismer.

There was a review for the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees Tuesday about the positions where COVID-19 was causing absences. In attendance was Dr. Rob Kenagi, the President and CEO of Stormont Vail Health, who noted that Stormont Vail was also in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak and a lot of their workforce and providers were out.&nbsp;

The solar panel loan program will offer a zero-percent loan for qualifying households to lower energy costs through solar panel insulation.&nbsp;

The "Pay as you Save" program is supported by a grant from 'The Caroline Peine Charitable Foundation.'

Inspired by the U.S. Department of Energy's Equity in Energy initiative which builds on traditional weatherization programs intended to lower the energy burden felt by low-income homeowners.

In Kansas, the average annual energy cost is $2,414, for&nbsp;approximately 3% of Kansans is a burden.&nbsp;

In 2021, the Manhattan Area Habitat for Humanity installed the first solar panel array on a new construction project, creating a savings of approximately&nbsp; $40 per month.

Kaylee Turner is returning to the Junior Olympics after winning two gold medals last year.&nbsp;

“It feels a little weird because last year I had a lot of teammates by my side, but this time, I'm just going, well, so it's different, but I like know what I'm doing.” Junior Olympic athlete, Kaylee Turner says.&nbsp;

Turner says she has to remember not to overthink her jumps and routines.&nbsp;

“Don't overthink it, I overthink it all the time, it never really helps me.”&nbsp; Turner says.

Turner advises other athletes on how to keep focused.&nbsp;

“Just stick it. I feel like ‘stick it’ is the thing that keeps me going.” Turner says.

Tanzanite TnT sends gold medal winner back to Jr. Olympics for 2nd year

In collaboration with the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, the Junction City Police Department announced on Monday that over the weekend they participated in a 3-day special operation that targeted major criminals. This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County, and over the 3-day span, multiple arrests were made. 

In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. As a result of this operation over 120 pounds of Methamphetamine (street value of over $4,400,000), were seized and removed from circulation. This operation was a great example of inter-agency collaboration, working together on a common goal, making communities safer.  </figure>In collaboration with the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, the Junction City Police Department announced on Monday that over the weekend they participated in a 3-day special operation that targeted major criminals. This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County, and over the 3-day span, multiple arrests were made. In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. As a result of this operation over 120 pounds of Methamphetamine (street value of over $4,400,000), were seized and removed from circulation. This operation was a great example of inter-agency collaboration, working together on a common goal, making communities safer. Authorities participate in special operation in Wabaunsee County

Riley County Police Department was called to the scene of a crash west of Manhattan in the 6100 block of Anderson Avenue, late Sunday evening.

When officers arrived on scene they located a 2003 Subaru Forester driven by Jose Castro-Rivera, 25, of Manhattan.

Castro-Rivera was traveling west when he swerved to miss a deer entering the roadway, causing the car to leave the roadway, partially overturn, before stopping in a field right-side up.

Both Castro-Rivera and a passenger, Axel Chaves, 22, of Manhattan were both transported to Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of minor injuries.

What I love about this rule is it doesn’t hinge on predisposed talent or having the right connections. The only way to unlock the potential of this rule is to just keep showing up.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Showing up has been on my mind as I contemplate the upcoming primary. Over the years, I have heard many people dismiss primaries as unimportant. They may say their vote doesn’t matter or claim they will vote when the “real” election happens. That type of thinking is flawed because often the primary election is the real race. If you live in an area that is largely affiliated with one party, the primary likely determines the front runner or the only name that will be on the ballot in the general election. In our state, there are dozens of state and local races where only one party has candidates who have filed for election. This is your chance to show up for your community. If you hesitate to vote because you aren’t sure who to vote for, I invite you to visit KFB.org to see a list of the candidates endorsed by Kansas Farm Bureau’s Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends. These candidates have been recommended by our local members through a grassroots process. KFB’s political action committee takes local feedback and, in cases of incumbents’, voting histories into consideration to make endorsements for candidates who understand, value and support agriculture in our state. If that is not enough of a reason to show up for the primary, here an important question: Do you have an opinion on abortion? This is such a heated and prominent issue on the national stage that I am guessing most people do. This primary election is your opportunity to share that opinion without having to put a sign in your yard and jeopardize any relationships. The primary will feature a proposed constitutional amendment that would affirm there is no Kansas constitutional right to abortion, and the right to pass laws to regulate abortion. If the amendment fails, the constitution would not change leaving in place the recently recognized right to abortion. I am not advocating for or against the amendment. However, I am advocating for you to show up and cast a ballot for your beliefs and values. If I haven’t convinced you in any of my previous points, let me try one more. You probably already knew an election was coming from the seemingly endless advertisements on social media, TV, streaming services and in your mailbox. These advertisements are overly sensational, meant to vilify one candidate while making a hero out of another, and often make claims that are irrelevant to the position in question. The reason we are bombarded with these advertisement is because organizations, many outside the state, are spending millions of dollars to sway your vote. All that money is spent in hope that an unengaged voter will show up to the poll and pick someone based on the faint memory they have of an advertisement. If you don’t want our elections to be determined by the highest bidder, show up as an informed voter for the primary. Politics can be overwhelming and it is easy to feel like your vote doesn’t matter, but it does. The world and elections belong to those who show up and I hope you will on Aug. 2.

'MidFest presents the ‘Ville' turns up the heat on 12th Street

The Flint Hills Discovery Center hosts the annual 'National Day of the Cowboy' with activities for kids of all ages.

“So this is our annual celebration of the American cowboy. So we have lots of things going on today and yes, branding station outside the buckboard rides for folks to go on. Kids activities upstairs, they can make their own bolo ties. And we’ve got the K State rodeo club here. They're showing people how you actually wrote the calf so you can get your hands on the rope and try it out yourself.” Flint Hills Discovery Center, Assistant Director, Stephen Bridenstine says.

Visitors also had the opportunity to brand a slab of pine with the new Flint Hills Discovery Center Brand, and take it home as a souvenior.

“It's gotten bigger and better every year obviously we took a year off with COVID But we're so excited to be back in full operation doing our big National Day of Cowboy.” Bridenstine says.

🎥: 'National Day of the Cowboy' celebrates the American cowboy

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a  seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.4% in June. This was an increase from 2.3 percent in May and a decrease from 3.5 percent in June 2021.

“Even with a slight uptick to 2.4 percent, the Kansas unemployment rate remained near historic lows in June,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “This indicates strength in the Kansas job market as people continue to find employment across the state.” 

The jobless rate in Riley County rose from 2. 4 percent in May to 3 percent in June. Geary, Pottawatomie, Wabaunsee and most other counties in the region saw an increase in June.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 4,600 from May. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.  Private sector jobs increased by 700 over the month, while government increased by 3,900.

“The Kansas economy saw robust hiring in June, adding 4,600 jobs over the month,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “While the job market remains strong, real hourly earnings continue to decline as a result of persistently high inflation, falling 4.1% compared to June 2021.”

Since June 2021 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,800. This change is due to an increase of 21,800 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,000 government jobs.

Private sector jobs increased by 700 over the month, while government increased by 3,900.“The Kansas economy saw robust hiring in June, adding 4,600 jobs over the month,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “While the job market remains strong, real hourly earnings continue to decline as a result of persistently high inflation, falling 4.1% compared to June 2021.”Since June 2021 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,800. This change is due to an increase of 21,800 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,000 government jobs.
