JUNCTION CITY - Shortly before 2:30 am on Saturday August 6th, officers with the Junction City Police Department responded to the 2600 block of Deerfield Blvd. for the report of a possible stabbing.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located an adult male with a stab wound, he was transported to the Geary Community Hospital in serious but stable condition. He was later transported to Stormont Vail Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Upon further investigation, officers found a second victim, 30-year old Stacy Subotich, of Fort Riley, had been transported to Irwin Army Hospital with life-threatening stab wounds. Subotich later died from her injuries.

Officers learned a third individual had driven themselves to Geary Community Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening stab wound.

The third individual was identified as 21-year old Jalen Thomas of Junction City.&nbsp;

After investigation, Thomas was arrested for 2nd Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery, and Aggravated Assault. He was transported to the Geary County Detention Center and is being held until his first court appearance.

The Junction City Police Department thanks the US Army Criminal Investigation Division, the Geary County Sheriff’s Office, and the Junction City Fire Department for their assistance in this investigation. 

This case remains under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Junction City Police Department 785-762-5912 or Geary County Crimestoppers at 785-762-8477.

Saturday morning stabbing leaves one dead in Junction City

WICHITA - The Riley County Police Department says 18-year old, Malachi Fielder, was located in Wichita on Friday, August 5th, 2022.

According to RCPD, Fielder was arrested by the Wichita Police Department in Wichita.

Law enforcement members participated in community involvement when they hosted their annual summer block party in Heritage Park Friday evening. Activities ranged from music and free food to a car show and dunk tank.

Police Chief John Lamb explained the evening was an opportunity for the public to learn about the different things going on in the community. "Also see what our local law enforcement can do, and what we can provide between us and the Sheriff's Department, Grandview Plaza Police and the Junction City Fire Department, what&nbsp; their taxpayer money is going toward, provide the service that we provide.

Lamb also participated in the dunk tank. "Deep and cold but it was refreshing. As hot as it is we still have a good crowd so we're really excited about the turnout. "

Law enforcement held a Summer Camp Block Party in Junction City

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged sex crimes.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a suspect identified as&nbsp;Luis Martinez, 31, of Topeka, allegedly battered a 37-year-old woman and forced her to stay in a room for an extended period of time.

Police located him already in custody in Pottawatomie County, arrested him on a warrant and transported him to the Riley County jail. 

Martinez is being held on requested charges of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated kidnapping on a $75,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

MANHATTAN - The Flint Hills Discovery Center hosts former Major LB player, Greg Pryor, for an author talk on Saturday, August 13th.

Pryor was a member of the 1985 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals and will present 'From the Hot Stove League to the World Series.'

The presentation will highlight Pryor's personal experiences in the MLB to include the Pine Tar game, Disco Demolition night and winning the 1985 World Series.

Pryor's presentation will start at 3:30 pm, and is expected to last about an hour with a public question and answer section to follow.

Signed copies of Pryor's book, The Day The Yankees Made Me Shave, will be available for purchase, along with autographed photos, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Former MLB infielder, Greg Pryor, to highlight experiences at Flint Hills Discovery Center

MANHATTAN - A 30-year old Manhattan woman was injured in a <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/4a37ab72-e9d8-4f03-84e6-565789111899">Thursday evening rollover crash </a>near the intersection of Hayes Drive and Gross Street.

When Riley County Police Department officers arrived on the scene, they found a 2009 Pontiac G5 driven by 30-year old Lyndsay Jones of Manhattan on it's roof.

According to RCPD, Jones was traveling northbound on Hayes Drive when the car drifted to the left, and hit a curb before hitting a tree which cause the car to overturn.

Jones was initially transported to Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan for treatment of her injuries before being transferred to Stormont Vail for further treatment.

Additional details on the crash or extent of Jones' injuries are not available as of 8:45 am Friday, August 5, 2022.

MANHATTAN - Kansas State University's Head Volleyball Coach, Suzie Fritz addressed attendees at the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Women in Business luncheon on Wednesday.

Fritz says finding what motivates a person helps find what drive a person towards their goals.&nbsp;

Determining what motivates people can be different for each person, some are motivated by money, others by reaching goals.&nbsp;

Fritz says motivation improves efficiency, builds relationships and leads to stability in the team, whether it’s a sports team or a workforce.&nbsp;

Fritz asked attendees to spend a few minutes figuring out what motivates them, before calling on a couple to talk about what motivates them.&nbsp;

In closing her presentation, Fritz reminded the crowd that everyone is motivated by something different, and may need different things to keep motivated.&nbsp;

“I think this is already an inspiring group of people. I think we’re all looking for motivation, we’re all looking for inspiration., and so just having the opportunity to come in and celebrate all of these successful, powerful, amazing women is just wonderful. Water Safari, Water Matters Day comes to Sunset Zoo this weekend

MANHATTAN - RCPD says Malachi Fielder has been located and arrested in Wichita on Friday, August 5th, 2022.

The Riley County Police Department is searching for 18-year old Malachi Fielder of Manhattan.

Fielder has a warrant out for his arrest in connection with a July 28th aggravated robbery in Manhattan, charges on the warrant include: aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and criminal discharge of a firearm.

On July 28th, it was reported that Fielder, along with 15-year old Terriundis Toliver, also of Manhattan, robbed a 17-year old of his iPhone, while pointing a gun at him and a 45-year old female.

Fielder and Toliver are said to have shot at the 17 - and 45-year old victims, as the victims attempted to follow them from the scene. No injuries were reported.

Toliver was arrested on July 31st, in connection with the incident and is being held at the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City on charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

If you see Fielder and know his whereabouts, do NOT attempt to approach him, as RCPD says he should be considered armed and dangerous.&nbsp;

UPDATE: Teen wanted for aggravated robbery, assault arrested in Wichita

Consumers continue strong demand for locally produced meat&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A rush to locally produced meat partly necessitated more than two years ago by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has spawned consumer’s interest in direct-to-consumer processing businesses, said a group of Kansas State University experts.&nbsp;

Dustin Pendell, an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">agricultural economist</a>&nbsp;with K-State Research and Extension, said that while consumers have always expressed an interest in locally processed meat, “Kansas has seen an increasing demand for local, direct-to-consumer meat processing businesses.”&nbsp;

Jessie Vipham, an assistant professor in K-State’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Department of Animal Sciences and Industry</a>, noted that from January 2020 to March 2022, the&nbsp;<a href="https://agriculture.ks.gov/" target="_blank">Kansas Department of Agriculture</a>&nbsp;granted licenses to seven new custom meat processing facilities in the state.&nbsp;

Plus, she notes, “the KDA’s meat and poultry inspection staff have spoken with at least 82 individuals who have expressed interest in operating a new custom or inspected meat processing facility in Kansas.”&nbsp;

In July,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/research/global-food/" target="_blank">K-State’s Global Food Systems initiative</a>&nbsp;awarded a grant to Vipham, Pendell and Rachel Mui – an assistant professor of management in&nbsp;<a href="https://cba.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">K-State’s College of Business Administration</a>&nbsp;-- to further develop the capacity of meat processing businesses in Kansas.&nbsp;

“As a university,” Mui said, “we have a charge&nbsp;to promote economic growth and prosperity, and as more and more people consider small business ownership -- especially in the meat processing arena -- we have a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact.”&nbsp;

“Ultimately, we hope to support&nbsp;small and very-small meat processors across Kansas, in terms of business expansion, business start-up and adoption of improved food safety practices,” Pendell said. “Specifically, we will conduct a needs assessment on the opportunities and constraints of small and very small meat processors when establishing or expanding a meat processing business.”&nbsp;

K-State launches effort to support growth of meat processors in Kansas 

The City of Manhattan has announced that eastbound traffic on Bluemont Avenue will be diverted from 7am to 7pm Thursday.

Bluemont Avenue will be closed at the southside of the intersection with North Manhattan Avenue for installation of a new storm sewer in the area.

Eastbound traffic on Anderson/Bluemont Avenue will be detoured south on 14th Street towards Poyntz Avenue, except for those planning to turn left (north) onto North Manhattan Avenue. (The left turn lane will remain open to those drivers.) Southbound traffic on North Manhattan Avenue planning to turn east onto Bluemont instead will be detoured onto Vattier Street. Westbound traffic on Bluemont Avenue will not be affected by this closure.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Access to the alley south of Bluemont will be via Little Moro. The alley will be designated as one-way only eastbound during this one-day closure period.

Parents of found toddler in MHK have been identified

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bill enhancing health care and disability benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits won final approval in the Senate on Tuesday, ending a brief stalemate over the measure that had infuriated advocates and inspired some to camp outside the Capitol.

The Senate approved the bill by a vote of 86-11. It now goes to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law. Biden described the legislation as the biggest expansion of benefits for service-connected health issues in 30 years and the largest single bill ever to address exposure to burn pits.

“I look forward to signing this bill, so that veterans and their families and caregivers impacted by toxic exposures finally get the benefits and comprehensive health care they earned and deserve," Biden said.

The Senate had overwhelming approved the legislation back in June, but a do-over was required to make a technical fix. That process derailed when Republicans made a late attempt to change another aspect of the bill last week and blocked it from advancing.

The abrupt delay outraged veterans groups and advocates, including comedian Jon Stewart. It also placed GOP senators in the uncomfortable position of delaying the top legislative priority of service organizations this session of Congress.

A group of veterans and their families have been camping out at the Capitol since that vote. They had endured thunderstorms and Washington's notorious summer humidity, but they were in the galleries as senators cast their votes.

“You can go home knowing the good and great thing you have done and accomplished for the United States of America," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told them.

The legislation expands access to health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs for millions who served near burn pits. It also directs the VA to presume that certain respiratory illnesses and cancers were related to burn pit exposure, allowing veterans to obtain disability payments to compensate for their injury without having to prove the illness was a result of their service.

Roughly 70% of disability claims related to burn pit exposure are denied by the VA due to lack of evidence, scientific data and information from the Defense Department.

The military used burn pits to dispose of such things as chemicals, cans, tires, plastics and medical and human waste.

Hundreds of thousands of Vietnam War era veterans and survivors also stand to benefit from the legislation. The bill adds hypertension, or high blood pressure, as a presumptive disease associated with Agent Orange exposure.

The Congressional Budget Office projected that about 600,000 of 1.6 million living Vietnam vets would be eligible for increased compensation, though only about half would have severe enough diagnoses to warrant more compensation.

Also, veterans who served in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Guam, American Samoa and Johnston Atoll will be presumed to have been exposed to Agent Orange. That’s another 50,000 veterans and survivors of deceased veterans who would get compensation for illnesses presumed to have been caused by their exposure to the herbicide, the CBO projected.

The bill also authorizes 31 major medical VA health clinics and research facilities in 19 states.

The bill is projected to increase federal deficits by about $277 billion over 10 years.

The bill has been a years-long effort begun by veterans and their families who viewed the burn pits used in Iraq and Afghanistan as responsible for respiratory problems and other illnesses the veterans experienced after returning home. It was named after Sgt. First Class Heath Robinson from Ohio, who died in 2020 from cancer he attributed to prolonged exposure to burn pits. His widow, Danielle Robinson, was first lady Jill Biden's guest at the president's State of the Union address earlier this year.

Stewart, the former host of Comedy Central's “The Daily Show,” also brought increased exposure to the burn pit maladies veterans were facing. He also was in the gallery watching the vote Tuesday. He wept and held his head in his hand as the final vote began.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a situation where people who have already given so much had to fight so hard to get so little," he said after the vote. “And I hope we learn a lesson.”

The House was the first to act on the burn pits legislation. An earlier version the House approved in March was expected to increase spending by more than $320 billion over 10 years, but senators trimmed some of the costs early on by phasing in certain benefit enhancements. They also added funds for staffing to help the VA keep up with the expected increase in demand for health care and an increase in disability claims.

Some GOP senators are still concerned that the bill will increase delays at the VA because of an increased demand for veterans seeking care or disability compensation.

“What we have learned is that the VA cannot deliver what is promised because it does not have the capacity to handle the increase,” said Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.

Sens. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Jerry Moran, R-Kan., led the effort to get the bill passed in the Senate. After passage, Tester told reporters he received a call from Biden, thanking him for “taking a big weight” off his shoulder.

For Biden, the issue is very personal. He has raised the prospect that burn pits in Iraq were responsible for the death of his son Beau.

“We don’t know for sure if a burn pit was the cause of his brain cancer, or the diseases of so many of our troops,” Biden said at his State of the Union speech. “But I’m committed to finding out everything we can.”

Moran said that when the bill failed to pass last week, he was disappointed but remembered the strength of the protesters who had sat outside in the scorching heat for days.

“Thanks to the United States Senate for demonstrating when there’s something good and a good cause, this place still works,” Moran said.

Water has been shut off at <a href="https://goo.gl/maps/aVzfGuQjNbe3xpdi9">Anneberg Park</a>, due to a leak, the City of Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department announced late Tuesday afternoon.

According to a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/manhattanparksandrec">Facebook post</a>, all restrooms at Twin Oaks, Soccer Main and the Colley Complex, have been shut off, along with the water hydrants at the playground and shelters.

Parks and Rec staff advise the public to bring plenty of drinking water for any activities you have planned at the park for the next few days until repairs can be completed.

There is one portable restroom available by the playground near Dishman Lake.

Manhattan Parks and Recreation staff say the water will remain off through at least Thursday, August 4th while repairs are completed.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has named Lori Rice, a K-2 and gifted teacher at Manhattan Virtual Academy, as the 2022 Kansas History Teacher of the Year.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is dedicated to K-12 American history education.

The History Teacher of the Year award was first awarded in 2004, highlighting the importance of history education by honoring American history teachers from elementary and high schools.

The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools, and US Territories.


“Knowledgeable and impassioned teachers bring our country's history to life for students, allowing them to understand engaging with history is about more than a series of facts,” said James G. Basker, President of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. “Teachers are the lifeblood of our student’s education, and these are the best of the best”


In 1996, Rice received her bachelor's degree in education from Kansas State University, and completed her master's degree in education from Emporia State University in August 2022.

Manhattan teacher named '22 Kansas History Teacher of the Year

Flying discs and agile dogs descended on Sun Dawg Farms over the weekend for the first UpDog Challenge event to be hosted by Prairie Disc Dogs.&nbsp;

“This was the UpDog challenge. It was our first competition that we’ve hosted. We've been...we host Toss and Fetch League and some other practices and&nbsp;play dates, but this is the first time that we've hosted an actual competition.” Prairie Disc Dogs, Team Captain, Jennifer Anthony says.&nbsp;

The Competition consisted of Frizgility, 4-Way Play, Throw n Go and Time Warp events, showcasing different skills of the dogs and handlers.&nbsp;

“UpDog challenge is fun because it's got a number of different types of games, so, you don't just have to be able to throw far to be able to do well. There's different types of skills that can be rewarded in the games.” Anthony says.&nbsp;

Each event has specific rules and scoring guidelines used to determine the winner of each event, with points given for accomplishing certain criteria.&nbsp;

“Any dog that likes to chase a toy, chase a ball, chase a disk, it can be a good disc dog. We definitely have certain breeds that are more common, but we have had all breeds, all sizes, all ages. Puppies can play as well.” Anthony says.&nbsp;

We definitely have certain breeds that are more common, but we have had all breeds, all sizes, all ages. DICKINSON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident during a&nbsp; law enforcement pursuit just before 10:30a.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 BMW 645 Series driven by Joseph A. Hernandez, 35, Fort Collins, Colorado,&nbsp;&nbsp;was westbound on Interstate 70 actively fleeing and eluding law enforcement.

The car left the roadway and vaulted over Jeep Road. The car came to rest on the west side of Jeep Road just north of the Interstate.

EMS transported Hernandez and a passenger 34-year-old Maria G. Hernandez of Fort Collins to Salina Regional Medical Center. They were not wearing seat belts and the license plate was not displayed on the vehicle, according to the KHP.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of crimes involving guns in Manhattan.

On July 29, officers filed a report for aggravated assault in the 1100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. A 41-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man reported a 43-year-old woman threatened them with a gun during a road rage incident between the victims and suspect.

Just after 4p.m. July 30, a 37-year-old Manhattan woman reported&nbsp;a 37-year-old male suspect battered her, threatened her, pointed a BB gun at her, then shot it over her head, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Just before 4a.m. Sunday, an unknown suspect shot a gun while leaving the Holiday Inn parking lot in the 1600 Block of Anderson Avenue. 

Officers later found the suspect vehicle in the 3100 block of Lundin Drive, according to the RCPD. Police arrested a passenger of the car, Terriundis Toliver Jr., 15, of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault in connection to an&nbsp;aggravated robbery in the 20 block of Waterway Place in Manhattan on July 28.

Toliver was transported to the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City.

Just before 7:30p.m. Sunday,&nbsp;a 32-year-old man reported a 26-year-old male suspect threatened him with a gun during a road rage incident near the intersection of N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Laramie Street in Manhattan.

Police&nbsp; also reported they arrested 43-year-old Regina Smith of Ogden on requested charges  aggravated assault in connection with the July 29 road rage incident.

Weekend of gun crimes reported in Manhattan

Starting Tuesday, August 2nd through Thursday, August 4th, the Kansas Department of Transportation(KDOT) will be completing milling work on K-18 east of Zeandale.

Work will take place from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, weather permitting.

The portion of K-18 from just east of Zeandale to the intersection with K-99 will be reduced to one lane of traffic through the area. A pilot car, flaggers, signs and cones will also assist with traffic control.

KDOT says drivers should anticipate delays of up to 15 minutes while crews are working.
