WABAUNSEE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Saturday in Wabaunsee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Dodge Durango driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Chestina N.&nbsp; Randles, 29, Alma, was northbound in the 100 block of Southtown Road. A&nbsp;gust of wind blew the SUV off the roadway. The vehicle landed&nbsp; on the passenger side, about 20 feet down an embankment.

&nbsp;EMS transported Randles to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas delivered a strong hard red winter&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;crop in 2025, producing more than 340 million bushels as timely late-spring rains helped fields rebound from earlier drought stress. Harvest ran later than normal due to frequent storms, but test weight and falling number concerns proved minimal, and most disease pressures like stripe rust, leaf rust and&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;streak mosaic stayed localized. While protein levels came in slightly lower than recent drought years, overall yield and grain quality across Kansas reflected a resilient crop supported by improved moisture.

The report includes class-specific information, starting with samples collected during harvest. Those samples are then sent to six partner laboratories across the United States, who conduct rigorous testing and analysis. This year’s report includes expanded extensograph testing and additional RVA (Rapid Visco Analyser) flour data for both soft and hard winter&nbsp;wheat.

The results are then compiled into the Crop Quality Report, which provides grade, non-grade, flour and specific end-product data. For example, this year’s report included additional data on sponge cake performance for soft red winter&nbsp;wheat. Overall, across all classes, global buyers will find U.S.&nbsp;wheat&nbsp;to be a consistent and reliable foundational ingredient for&nbsp;wheat-based food products.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Kansas-based chapters of nonprofit organizations focused on wildlife conservation or promoting hunting and fishing have a special fundraising opportunity thanks to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission. Through the Commission’s Big Game Permit program, administered by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), eligible organizations can enter a random drawing for one of seven special big game hunting permits, which may then be sold to raise funds for conservation projects. Applications are due by December 26, 2025.

Each year, the program offers up to seven Commission Big Game permits (no more than one elk and one antelope, and up to seven deer permits), depending on the applicants’ preferences. Deer permits are either-species/either-sex and are valid statewide during any season with the legal equipment for that season; and they do not count against other big game permits the license holder may obtain.

“Organizations that win a Commission Big Game Permit typically raffle or auction it, which does two important things,” said&nbsp;Sarah Navarro, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks’ chief of licensing. “It helps them raise funds for its mission, and it generates dedicated dollars for a mutually agreed-upon conservation project that KDWP and the organization approve together.”

Winning organizations keep 15 percent of their sale price of the Commission Big Game Permit to support their missions. The remaining 85 percent is held by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks until a mutually agreed-upon conservation project is approved. (If Kansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry is drawn, they may keep 85 percent of their sale price in order to offset donated deer processing fees.) Organizations may not win a Commission Big Game Permit more than once in a three-year period.

Just before 4:30p.m. Tuesday, police arrested 54-year-old&nbsp;Dean Garvin of Ogden in the 3200 block of Kimball Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; 

He is being held on a $50,000 bond on requested charges that include&nbsp;. two counts of distribution of opiate/opium/narcotic/certain stimulant 3.5 grams but less than 100 grams; two counts of distribution/possession with intent to distribute heroin/certain stimulants/fentanyl 3.5-100 grams; two counts of use/possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body; distribution of a controlled substance with a dosage 10 to 100 units, two counts of possession of marijuana; one count of distribution or possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia for illegal use; ; one count of driving while suspended/cancelled/revoked; ; one count of possession of opiate/opium/narcotic/certain stimulant; and one count of use of communication facility in the commission of a felony drug violation.&nbsp; County Jail at the time of this report.

Garvin has a previous drug conviction in Dickinson County, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Red Cross offers steps to help avoid a Thanksgiving cooking fire

The City of Manhattan has announced that the closure on Anderson Avenue has been extended through Sunday, November 30 due to possible inclement winter weather.  

Due to the head-to-head traffic configuration, the steep hill between Connecticut and Timberlane, and limited sight distance in the construction zone, Public Works will close Anderson Avenue during winter weather to protect all travelers. This area has a history of vehicles getting stuck or sliding out of control in snowy or icy conditions.

To keep the public informed, the City will use a three-step alert system for Anderson Avenue closures related to weather:

- Winter Weather Watch – Conditions may develop that could require a closure. At this stage, we alert the public that a closure is possible and encourage residents to plan ahead and stay informed.

- Winter Weather Warning – Hazardous conditions are expected. A closure of Anderson Avenue is likely, and we will remind the public to prepare alternate routes and limit nonessential travel.

- Road Closure – If conditions become unsafe, Anderson Avenue will be closed and a signed detour will be activated. Updates will be shared throughout the closure, including estimated duration and reopening plans.

Preparations for the possibility of severe weather

The Wichita City Council held an executive session with the search firm, CPS HR Consulting,&nbsp;after the City Council Workshop on Tuesday to discuss the City Manager candidates. After the executive session, the City Council voted 5 to 2 (No-Johnson, Hoheisel) to direct staff to enter into negotiations with the intent to make an offer of employment to Dennis Marstall.&nbsp;

Dennis has been the County Administrator for Lancaster County, South Carolina since 2021. Prior to that he was the Assistant City Manager in Manhattan, Kansas. He also was a Vice-President with United Way and held several positions with the City of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science degree from Kansas State University and a master’s in public administration degree from the University of Louisville.&nbsp;

Following negotiations, if an employment agreement with the candidate is reached, the City Council is anticipated to hold a vote to finalize the selected candidate’s employment at the City Council meeting on December 2.&nbsp;

The Seelye Mansion’s Christmas celebrations date back more than a century. On December 25, 1905, the first Christmas dinner was served in the dining room to honor the golden anniversary of Mason and Ellen Seelye. The following year, the mansion hosted a grand Christmas Ball with more than 300 guests who marveled at an 11,000-square-foot winter wonderland. One of the most memorable moments was the unveiling of a rare Christmas flower, the poinsettia, shipped by rail from California for its first appearance in Kansas.

That same holiday spirit continues today with over 65 decorated Christmas trees, nearly 100 live poinsettias throughout the 25-room home, and hundreds of nutcrackers that bring warmth and festive charm to every corner.

Terry Tietjens, the Seelye Mansion Board of Directors, and dedicated volunteers welcome guests to enjoy this seasonal experience.

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2a.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Kenworth semi driven by Scott L.&nbsp;Graverholt, 42, Bellevue, Nebraska, was southbound on Kansas 15 near 3300 Avenue. The semi&nbsp;&nbsp;crossed the center line, entered the east ditch, stuck a cattle fence and entered private property The vehicle continued along the inside of the fence line, stuck a culvert and coming to rest south of the culvert.

EMS transported Graverholt to.&nbsp;Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Campus. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Sen. Moran recently hosted USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden in Manhattan to highlight the critical research occurring at NBAF and Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute.

“On a recent tour of the facility, USDA staff highlighted the efforts being made to finish critical repairs and bring NBAF to its full operational capacity,” wrote Sen. Moran. “A lack of staff in both science and operational roles will hinder NBAF's function and mission, threatening national food and agriculture security.”

“The work of your staff has already shortened the timeline for NBAF to come fully online, and I commend you on making food security a priority for USDA,” concluded Sen. Moran. “Prompt action on this matter ensures this timeline stays on track."

After impact, Ed Thompson then fell into Susan Thompson, 82, of Manhattan. 

EMS transported Edward Thompson to Via Christi for treatment of minor injuries. Paul was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

“I’ve given my ... life for this place for seven years,” Klieman said. “I’ve given everything for seven years and I think I deserve a little bit of respect.”

Utah scored two touchdowns in the final 2:47 to complete its rally after Kansas State gashed the Utes on the ground all day.

Kansas State ran for a program-record 472 yards and five touchdowns — also a record for an opponent in Rice-Eccles Stadium — while averaging 11.2 yards per carry. Joe Jackson led the way with a school-record 293 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.

The last time a Division I team ran for more yards in a loss was on Nov. 18, 2017, when Army had 534 yards rushing in a 52-49 loss to North Texas.

The Chamber noted 10 projects announced in 2025 expected to create 544 jobs and $46 million in investment, as well as progress on the Manhattan Growth Plan through housing initiatives, updated incentive structures, implementation of the city's new permitting and licensing&nbsp;software, targeted lead-generation efforts, and expanded regional site assessment work.

Tourism also remained strong in 2025 with more than 3 million visitors, and military relations programming continued to support City–Fort Riley partnerships.The report also outlines growing activity in talent development and entrepreneurship. Participation increased across workforce programs such as the KEEP Tour, Classroom to Career, and the MHK Summer Intern Program, supported by partnerships with MATC, K-State, and local employers.

Innovate 24 expanded its services by adding staff, enhancing technical assistance, and coordinating with partners—including Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills—to support entrepreneurs and administer small-business loan programs, with more than $1.5 million in approved loan funds since 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;
