Red flag warnings are in effect in the Flint Hills region Friday as the National Weather Service in Topeka is warning of a very high fire danger.

A red flag warning has been issued for Geary and Riley counties from noon to 8 p.m.Saturday.

Skies will remain sunny and clear, with a 5 to 15 mph south wind. That wind will pick up Saturday, sustained at 10 to 15 mph and gusting to 25 mph.

Highs through the weekend will be in the upper-60s to low-70s. BY Tuesday, the high temperature is expected to be near 80 degrees.

There is a 40 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms in the early morning hours Monday, the only precipitation in the long-term forecast.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is issuing an air quality advisory for the Flint Hill region, through Manhattan toward Nebraska.

Modeling has predicted conditions will worsen because of existing smoke combined with weather inversion patterns starting at 10 p.m. - 10 a.m. with a brief reprieve possible between noon and 5 p.m. and may continue for several days. The advisory took effect on April 7 for central and north-central counties in Kansas due to smoke from the Flint Hill seasonal burning between Topeka, Manhattan, and Salina, Kansas. When human health impacts are reduced, KDHE will rescind the advisory.

KDHE reminds Kansans that March and April are when large areas of the state’s rangelands are burned, especially within the Flint Hills. These burns help preserve the tallgrass prairie ecosystem, control invasive species, reduce woody encroachment from species such as Eastern Red Cedar, and provide better forage for cattle. Prescribed burning also reduces the risk of wildfires and effectively manages rangeland resources. Smoke from the burns can influence the air quality of downwind areas.

Smoke management techniques are vital to reduce air quality and health impacts for the most vulnerable individuals, including those with respiratory issues, pre-existing heart or lung diseases, children, and the elderly.

“Because air quality levels can change quickly, we are asking people to remain vigilant,”&nbsp;Doug Watson, meteorologist, said. “Prescribed burns release large amounts of particulate matter and other pollutants that can form ozone. Particulate matter and ozone can cause health problems, even in healthy individuals.”

Common health problems include burning eyes, runny nose, coughing, and illnesses such as bronchitis.

But here are 50 people who, if you don’t know them, you should know about, because in many ways, they are touching your life today.

Julie Roller Weeks,&nbsp;Abilene Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, Abilene Although she calls herself a “proud ruby-sneaker-wearing Kansan,” Julie Roller Weeks knows the state has a lot more to offer than just Dorothy and Toto. “We have so many stories to tell,” she said. “Tourism is the most rewarding because all economic development activities start with a visit. Tourism is a value-add to communities, and my goal is to generate economic growth in Abilene through tourism.”

Originally from nearby Woodbine in Dickinson County, she earned her journalism and mass communication degree from Kansas State, then immediately began working to promote Kansas communities—serving as a Main Street director in Augusta, working in economic development in Pottawatomie County, and marketing Kansas products for the Department of Agriculture in Manhattan. Now, she’s back in her home county and leading Abilene’s convention visitors office, a task abetted by the presence of a presidential library. She’s helping the town garner increasingly noteworthy national attention: Destination of the Year by the Midwest Travel Network, Best Historic Small Town by USA TODAY, Friendliest Small Town in the U.S. by&nbsp;TravelAwaits, Best Small Town to Visit by Smithsonian Magazine, and many others. “From Eisenhower to the Chisholm Trail, worldwide entrepreneurs, incredible architecture … we are rich with attractions,” she said. “The goal is to keep Abilene’s name front of mind as a community that’s doing great things. Just before 2p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1100 block of Central Park Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;The City of Manhattan reported catalytic converters from two City vehicles were cut off and stolen. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $3,000.&nbsp;

Silver Key members take part in a variety of community service 
projects throughout the semester. Past projects have included hosting 
children from the Boys and Girls Club at K-State Athletics events; 
partnering with the K-State Recycling Center; writing cards and making 
quilts for a local veterans' center; collecting donations for the 
Manhattan Emergency Shelter; highway and neighborhood cleanup efforts; 
and afternoon visits to Stoneybrook and Meadowlark, senior living 
communities in Manhattan.

To be eligible for Silver Key, students must have at least a 3.0

FORT RILEY - On Thursday, April 6th, a prescribed burn will be conducted by Fort Riley Fire and Emergency Services, along with the Fort Riley Environmental Division.

The prescribed burn will be along the eastern edge of the installation, and is expected to begin around noon.

The burn is part of the 2023 spring burn plan in an on-post area northwest of the Manhattan Regional Airport.

Smoke will be visible around the Fort Riley, Manhattan and Junction City area.

Areas west of Manhattan, including Wildcat Creek Road can expect smoke to impact visibility in the area until winds shift to the south in the evening.

Fort Riley prescribed burn to begin Thurs. at noon

MANHATTAN — Registration is now open for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usd383.org/community/summer-learning">Summer STEM Institute</a>, a collaboration between Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 and Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/">College of Education</a>&nbsp;that brings approximately 325 middle schoolers to the K-State campus to experience the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math. The Summer STEM Institute, in its 13th year, provides engaging, hands-on learning for students. Enrollment is open to students in fifth through eighth grade during the 2022-23 school year. Sessions are from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday June 5-8, June 12-15 and June 19-22 and are based at the College of Education in Bluemont Hall at K-State. The institute will offer approximately 25 session topics — several of which are new — including Digital Designs with Canva Creativity, History Hunter, Board Game Madness: Probability is Everywhere and Math Walk. Plus, some favorites return, including Drones and Coding of Spheros, CSI, Music Exploration in a Digital World, Vet Med and Explore Manhattan. "We're excited to offer such creative classes this summer," said Paula Hough, executive director of teaching and learning for USD 383. "Each summer, we try to bring back popular classes plus add some new topics to keep it engaging. This summer, our teachers are providing outstanding options that we believe will provide some great activities for students." Lori Goodson, College of Education assistant professor of curriculum and instruction and STEAM coordinator, said K-State preservice teachers support the institute as part of their Core Teaching Skills class. The course is co-taught by Goodson and Kaylee Myers, instructor. "The program not only offers exciting classes for the middle schoolers, but it also provides an opportunity for our preservice teachers to gain quality experience working with students and collaborating with some of the local district's top classroom teachers," Goodson said. MANHATTAN — <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/chem/about/people/faculty/gadzikwa/">Tendai Gadzikwa</a>, assistant professor of <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/chem/">chemistry</a>
 in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University, has 
received a $779,556 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career 
Development Program award, known as a CAREER award, to study molecular 
reactions in confined spaces with the goal of designing more efficient 
catalysts. According to Gadzikwa, the development of new 
catalysts is integral to the sustainability goals of the chemical 
industry. Catalysts accelerate reactions, minimize unwanted products and
 facilitate more direct routes to chemical products. They also reduce 
energy consumption, environmental waste and expenses related to 
synthesizing pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, infrastructure materials 
and more.&nbsp;

Gadzikwa's lab studies, designs and synthesizes materials known as 
metal-organic frameworks, or MOFs. Their physical and chemical 
structures are modeled after the active sites of enzymes, which are the 
most efficient catalysts known to researchers.

"These porous materials have nanoscale cavities decorated with 
several chemical functionalities, and when molecules are confined in 
such spaces, they can exhibit surprising reactivity," said Gadzikwa, who
 will be promoted to associate professor in July.

The project, "CAREER: Confinement Effects and Emergent Behavior in 
Multifunctional MOF-Based Catalysts," aims to better understand these 
confinement effects and the molecular origins of the unexpected behavior
 and then to design and construct more efficient catalysts.&nbsp;

Trevor Hefley, associate professor of statistics and consulting 
faculty at the K-State Statistical Consulting Lab, will collaborate on 
advanced statistical analysis of experiment results.

The award will also support outreach efforts of the K-State student 
chapter of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of
 Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. Established in 2020 by Gadzikwa,
 who serves as its faculty advisor, the chapter is one of only two in 
the Great Plains region.&nbsp;

"I am very excited about Tendai's CAREER award, which reflects the 
chemistry community's high regard for her proposed research," said Chris
 Culbertson, interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "Awards 
like these not only propel state-of-the-art research but also support

After waking to below-freezing temperatures Wednesday in the Flint Hills, the National Weather Service in Topeka is predicting a return to spring is right around the corner.

The NWS is calling for clear, sunny skies well into next week as the mercury begins to rise. After a high in the low- to mid-50s Wednesday, a high of 60 is expected Thursday, rising to the low- to upper-70s through the weekend.

By Monday, a high in the mid-80s is expected, with forecasters calling for the high Tuesday to hit 90.

There is no precipitation in the long-term forecast.

NWS: Warm, dry weekend on the way for Flint Hills

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher I don’t know about you, but spring is here and I am ready for it. After a cold winter, there is nothing better than the sun on your face&nbsp;that first warm spring day. That same sunshine brings new growth, and we can see our pastures greening up. At first, the blades of grass barely poke through the ground, but soon with a little bit of sunshine and (hopefully) some water the grass grows at an amazing rate. The growth is incredible and what I find more fascinating is it happens year after year. Fall and winter comes and the top growth dies off only to come back as new growth the next year. Why? The secret is in the roots, the grassroots. Just like the prairie, Kansas Farm Bureau relies on grassroots to make our organization strong and resilient. They are the source of everything that happens even though they may not always be very visible. Our grassroots are what anchor us in the ground and give the organization a strong footing. Our grassroots run deep; they have been growing for over a century. Without our counties anchoring and supporting, the rest of the organization would not exist. Our deep roots and wide network are also what make us survive. When things are tough, we cover enough ground to help us to receive what we need to keep going. Just like grassroots bring in water and nutrients, our counties supply the organization with new ideas, hard work and volunteers. In turn, the leaves provide the plant with energy. The Kansas Farm Bureau provides advocacy, support and education back to the counties. Those grassroots are what makes Farm Bureau such a great organization. It is the fact that each county has its own, autonomous association, then each state is its own entity and the American Farm Bureau Federation exists not because of the states but the counties in each state. Just like the grass plant, nothing else would exist without the county level organizations. All policy and decisions ultimately are made at the county level. Every leader started out as a member in their home county. Every policy in our state and national policy book started out as an idea at the county level and worked its way through the system. The most effective education, advocacy and community service all happen at the county level. That is why we can represent farmers and ranchers of all types of no matter how big or small their farms or ranches are. The depth and breadth of our roots is what makes us different from every other agricultural organization and we should be very proud of that. Yes, everyone sees the green grass growing above ground but that green grass exists because of its roots, and I don’t know about you but I am awfully proud of my grassroots. Kansas woman hospitalized after I-70 accident

SHAWNEE&nbsp;– Topeka resident, Bobby Parkhurst, was fishing at Pottawatomie State Fishing Lake No. 2 when the catch-of-a-lifetime came into contact with his lure. Little did Parkhurst know that what loomed beneath the surface, ready to strike, would break a Kansas state record set the very same month, nearly 60 years prior.

The enormous white crappie caught by Parkhurst on March 5 was taken with rod and reel and a minnow as bait. After inspection and measurement by John Reinke, assistant director of Fisheries for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the lunker catch was put on a certified scale where it was recorded as weighing 4.07 pounds – the equivalent of six cans of soup.

“As fisheries biologists, we get the chance to see a lot of big fish but this one is certainly for the books,” Reinke said. “This crappie measured in at 18 inches long and 14 inches in girth, so it truly deserves a spot on the state record list.”

The previous Kansas state record for white crappie was set in 1964 by Frank Miller of Eureka when he reeled in a 4.02-pound crappie that measured 17.5 inches long. Miller used a rod and reel and minnow, too.

Topeka angler sets new Kansas record for crappie

CLAY COUNTY - USD 379 Clay County Schools Superintendent, Brett Nelson posted a message to the community on the district's Facebook page, stating a member of the school board received an email stating they had "planted bombs on the inside and also requested bitcoins.”

Nelson said officials at KDHE were aware of the message which had been sent to not only Clay County schools, but other schools, hospitals and businesses nationwide.

Local law enforcement will be present at all schools within USD 379 district, following a thorough inspection of the buildings, checking for open doors/window, or anything unusual.

RILEY COUNTY - USD 378 Riley County Schools Superintendent Cliff Williams also released a statement to parents saying the Riley County Police Department and SRO Officer Sheldon confirmed USD 378 school district had not been directly threatened.

According to Williams, RCPD has been at both schools out of an abundance of caution.

RILEY COUNTY - Volunteer firefighters with the Riley County Fire District #1 fought three wildfires over the weekend.

Thankfully no structures were burned and no injuries were reported.

On Friday evening, fire crews were called to the area of Gehrt Road near the intersection with Highway 177 on reports of heavy smoke where a wooded area, estimated to be 4 acres of cedar timbers and dense forest, connects with the neighborhood was burned.

Crews found multiple areas on fire near several homes, in yards and ditches, as well as two spot fires cause by embers that blew across HWY 177 due to strong winds in the area.

Volunteers and neighbors worked for more than 4 hours to extinguish smoldering trees and other debris in the steep, wooded terrain after the fires were brought under control.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, however, neither arson, nor foul play are suspected.

“Cedar burns quickly and intensely, and fire danger was extremely high on Friday,” said Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Russel Stukey. &nbsp;“Winds were gusting to 60 MPH and flames were visible for miles, but thankfully this burned out quickly. This fire threatened multiple homes and in some cases came within feet of damaging property. I continue to be grateful for the work of our volunteer fire crews - we’ve had a lot of close calls this season and their quick response times are the main reason we’ve been able to keep people and property safe.”&nbsp;

On Saturday, two prescribed, permitted agricultural burns got out of control and require assistance from Riley County Fire District #1 to get the fires under control and extinguished.

One fire was located on Stockdale Park Road, while the other was near Peach Grove Road. The estimated number of acres burned in these two fires is yet to be determined.

"My best advice is to stay aware of the weather,” said Stukey. “On days where fire danger is high, limit outdoor activities that cause sparks, such as welding or metal work. Also make sure you’re always following the requirements of a burn permit if you’re doing any Ag or brush pile burning when conditions allow.”

A Fire Weather Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Topeka for Tuesday, April 4th, due to low humidity, warm temperatures and the expected high winds.

No outdoor burning is allowed in Riley County on April 4th, 2023.

A red flag warning will remain in effect through 11 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service in Topeka warned.

With the temperature expected to spike to the mid-80s, low humidity and dry conditions, wildfires are a threat across the region.&nbsp;

Winds are expected to be sustained from the south at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph expected.

There is a 20 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms between 9 p.m. and midnight Tuesday as a cold front moves into the region.

The mercury will take a drastic plunge, only reaching a high in the low- to mid-50s Wednesday, the NWS predicted. North winds will blow 15 to 20 mph Wednesday, gusting to 30 mph.

The next slight chance of precipitation in the long-term forecast is Sunday night.

Extreme fire danger Tuesday with a high in the mid-80s

TOPEKA –&nbsp;Today, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment recognizes Fred the Preparedness Dog’s retirement and honors him with the title of emeritus effective June 30.

In 2013, “Fred, a German shepherd, had just joined our family. It all started when he jumped into the bathtub,” said Michael McNulty, emergency management director and handler. “My wife eagerly captured all his adorable dog moments with her camera. So, when Fred hopped into the tub to shelter during a weather warning, she quickly snapped a photo and sent it to me. I posted Fred’s photo on social media at work and added a caption: ‘Fred knows where to go in case of severe weather. You should too.’”

Fred became the first dog to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on preparedness in the country. During his decade of state service, Fred participated in close to 300 events, traveling more than 47 thousand miles and having tens of thousands of interactions with children and families.

So, when Fred hopped into the tub to shelter during a weather warning, she quickly snapped a photo and sent it to me.
