Dehart Plumbing reported two known suspects used a fake cashier's check to pay for services. The estimated total loss associated with this case is estimated to be $13,540.&nbsp;

Just after 1:30p.m. Wednesday, police arrested 20-year-old Israel Newby of Manhattan in the 9900 block of Jasmine Drive in Manhattan, according tot he Riley County Police Department activity report.

Newby is being held on a $250,000 bond on a requested charge of rape. The crime is reported to have occurred in December 2023.&nbsp;

Kansas roads will soon be busy with holiday travelers going to and from their destinations for the holidays. The Kansas Highway Patrol, along with other law enforcement agencies across the state will be on the roadway to ensure the safety of motorists across the state.

Before hitting the road, the Patrol encourages motorists to plan ahead and take the following into consideration:

• Plan your travel route and communicate this to your family in case you are involved in a crash or experience mechanical problems with your vehicle.

• Make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Check tires’ tread depth and air pressure, vehicle fluids, and mechanical equipment including the exhaust system.

• When you leave, start with a full tank of gas and a fully charged phone.

KHP shares travel tips ahead of the busy holiday season

MANHATTAN - The Houston Street Reconstruction Project is projected to start up in mid-February 2024.&nbsp;

This project will include updates to the infrastructure along Houston Street from the intersection with 3rd Street through the intersection with 4th Street up to the east edge of the intersection with 5th Street.

Phase 1 and 2 of the project will be started and run simultaneously, with Phase 1 being completed within 2 months of the projected start date and Phase 2 taking an additional month for completion.

Phases 3 will start following the completion of phases 1 and 2, which will allow for some of the street and sidewalk access to be reopened, while another portion will be closed for updates.

The intersection at 4th Street and Houston will include updated crosswalks, bulbouts, planters and lighting to continue the aesthetics to tie the area back into the Poyntz area of Downtown Manhattan.

The 400 block of Houston Street will also receive updates to the sidewalks, and storm water infrastructure replacement under the street during the final phases of the project.

The entire project is expected to take approximately 7 months to complete the four phases.

EMS transported Mead to Via Christi for treatment of her injuries. Police issued Joyce a notice to appear for failure to stop or yield at a stop sign and driving in violation of a restriction.

MANHATTAN - Bringing the pasture to the pavement, the Aggieville Showdown Grand Drive returns to Aggieville on Saturday, April 6th.

The Aggieville Showdown is a national cattle jackpot show and was created by a group of friends passionate about agricultural education and looking for a way to bridge the gap between rural and urban lifestyles.

USD 329 Wabaunsee Schools Superintendent releases statement on arrest 

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —The game warden in&nbsp;Pottawatomie County&nbsp; is asking for the public's assistance in identifying the individual who poached a deer on private property and only took the head, according to a social media report from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game Wardens.

The deer was found near the southeast corner of Galilee Road and Mt. Vernon Road in Pottawatomie County. 

The deer is suspected to have been taken within the last week. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Game Warden Matthew Cook at (785) 256-3603.

RCPD investigating case of alleged blackmail

Cloud County Community College will be offering adult education, GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes beginning on January 16 in Concordia and Junction City.

The Adult Education program at CCCC offers an adult learning atmosphere to gain skills necessary for success at home and in the workplace. The classes are open to individuals 16 and older who are not enrolled in school. Basic skills and diploma preparation classes are offered afternoons and evenings in Concordia, and mornings, afternoons, and evenings in Junction City to accommodate working adults’ schedules. Classes are small with both classroom and computer instruction.

Those who attend can also improve on basic skills in everyday reading, math and English, as well as learn employability skills while earning WorkReady Credentials. Computer skills are also a part of the courses, where students can gain basic Microsoft Word and Internet skills, and also earn technology certificates.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are also offered at both the Concordia and Geary County campus. ESL classes provide instruction in English-language skills including speaking, writing, listening, and reading for students whose first language is not English. Classes are designed to help improve reading and writing skills, as well as conversational English.

GED test preparation instruction is also available at both locations, and the Geary County campus will now offer English as a second language classes. The centers are located at CCCC’s Concordia campus and at the Geary County campus in Junction City. All students must attend orientation before enrolling in classes. Students are to call for an orientation appointment.

 For both locations, orientation appointments can be made for January 9 and 10. The first day of classes at both locations is January 16.

Basic skills and diploma preparation classes are offered afternoons and evenings in Concordia, and mornings, afternoons, and evenings in Junction City to accommodate working adults’ schedules. Classes are small with both classroom and computer instruction.Those who attend can also improve on basic skills in everyday reading, math and English, as well as learn employability skills while earning WorkReady Credentials. Computer skills are also a part of the courses, where students can gain basic Microsoft Word and Internet skills, and also earn technology certificates.English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are also offered at both the Concordia and Geary County campus. ESL classes provide instruction in English-language skills including speaking, writing, listening, and reading for students whose first language is not English. Classes are designed to help improve reading and writing skills, as well as conversational English.GED test preparation instruction is also available at both locations, and the Geary County campus will now offer English as a second language classes. The centers are located at CCCC’s Concordia campus and at the Geary County campus in Junction City. All students must attend orientation before enrolling in classes. Students are to call for an orientation appointment. For both locations, orientation appointments can be made for January 9 and 10. WABAUNSEE CO. - On Tuesday, December 19th, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office released information regarding an arrest made on Monday, December 18th at the USD 329 District Offices in Alma, Kansas.

On Monday, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office was contacted about multiple allegations of offenses against minors and were requested to come to the USD 329 Wabaunsee County Schools District Offices in Alma.

Upon arrival, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Deputies found 30-year-old, Tyler Douglass of Alma waiting for them.

Evidence obtained by Deputies at the District Office led to the arrest of Douglass, who was taken into custody without incident.

Douglass was arrested on requested charges of Contributing to a Child's Misconduct and Furnishing Alcohol to Minors.

Douglass was transported to the Wabaunsee County Jail.

Douglass has been the Wabaunsee High School wrestling coach since December 2021.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's Office, this is an ongoing, multi-agency investigation. No further details will be provided at this time, and all students are safe, secure and accounted for.

MANHATTAN - On Thursday, three students at Manhattan Area Technical College were recognized during a collegiate-style 'signing day' event in partnership with Michelin-Junction City.

All three students are pursuing degrees in Industrial Engineering Technology through the <a href="https://jobs.michelinman.com/en/students/student-programs">Michelin Tech Scholars program</a>.

Richard Creed III, Logan Ingram and Jaden Moon were joined by their families and member of the Michelin Junction City facility leadership team to celebrate their acceptance into the Michelin Tech Scholars program.

“Technology is constantly changing in the manufacturing industry, and so are the abilities that lead to success,” said Chris Uher, site director at the Junction City facility. “We collaborate with schools like Manhattan Area Technical College to offer students the opportunity to learn from real-world scenarios at our facility while they complete their education. We can provide them with the guidance and support they need to be ready for future challenges and opportunities.” &nbsp;

Manhattan Area Tech hosts 'Michelin Tech Scholars' signing day

The Geary County Sheriff's Office has announced the retirement of Sheriff Dan Jackson, effective Jan. 19, 2024.

Jackson joined the Sheriff's Office in June 2014 on road patrol and retired as a patrol lieutenant in January 2018. He returned to the department in February 2019 with investigations.

On May 9, 2019 he was sworn in as Geary County Sheriff following the office being vacated by his predecessor due to legal issues. Sheriff Jackson ran for the office in 2020 and was elected during the height of the COVID outbreak through which he led the department during unprecedented times.

During his tenure in office, Sheriff Jackson implemented a joint dive rescue team with the Junction City Fire Department.

Under his guidance the Geary Sheriff's Office Special Response Team was formed. He also had a substation constructed near Milford Lake to house the department's watercraft with no cost to taxpayers.

Most recently Jackson has been moving the department forward to national accreditation through The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

Prior to his law enforcement career Jackson served seven years in the Navy and 18 in the Marines. During his military career of 25 years, he served in seven combat tours.

He worked for the Junction City Police Department for five years and on the I-135/I-70 Drug Task Force through Dickinson County Sheriff's Office.

He and his wife, Lynn Devine have a combined family of seven children and 10 grandchildren.

Sheriff Jackson has spent his life serving the Country and our local community. He plans to enjoy some time on the golf course, time with his dog, Gunny, taking care of lawns and working in his shop.

This is a temporary closure while crews work to relocate a 24-inch water main, along with removing and reconstructing Denison Avenue as part of the ongoing North Campus Corridor project.

The closure is between Kimball Avenue and the north entrance to the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.

Access to NBAF will remain available by approaching from the south on Denison Avenue. Deliveries will still have access via Kimball Avenue.

The detour around this project is to travel south on Denison, west on Claflin Avenue, the travel north on College Avenue.

(Riley County, KS – December 14, 2023) After 31 years of service to the State of Kansas, Shelly Williams, Director of Riley County Community Corrections has announced her retirement effective April 1, 2024.

Williams graduated from Kansas State University in 1992 with a bachelor’s in sociology, emphasis in criminology. She started her career at Central Kansas Community Corrections in Great Bend, Kansas, as an adult intensive probation officer. She worked in Great Bend for 15 months before accepting a position in April 1994 with Riley County Community Corrections in Manhattan, Kansas.

Shortly after starting at Riley County Community Corrections, Williams was asked to transition to a juvenile intensive probation officer, where she worked with juvenile offenders for 13 years. Shelly was promoted to Juvenile Services Supervisor in the fall of 1997, where she developed and implemented five different prevention, intervention, and supervision programs.

In 1998, Shelly accepted a temporary assignment under the leadership of former Chief Judge Meryl D. Wilson, where she served as the facilitator for juvenile justice reform. Shelly led 35 community members through a strategic planning process that met the unique needs of Riley County.

Shelly was promoted to the Director of Riley County Community Corrections in 2007 following the retirement of Frank McCoy who had led the agency since the early 1980’s. Under Shelly’s leadership, the agency implemented evidence-based practices in corrections, risk-based, randomized drug testing, and an emphasis on positively changing offender behavior. During her tenure, Shelly has overseen both the creation of a Youth Court and a Drug Court. Riley County Community Corrections has met the benchmark of reduced offender recidivism in all but one year of Shelly’s leadership. Shelly is most proud of developing, recruiting, and maintaining over 20 volunteer Protective Homes for children and youth placed into police protective custody.

Williams was instrumental in leading Community Corrections through 10 years of flat or reduced funding. More recently, Shelly has overseen the growth of the agency budget, the first-ever financial assistance from Riley County, and met the goal of being a million-dollar agency.

Williams has served on and held leadership roles within the Kansas Sentencing Commission, the Kansas Criminal Justice Reform Commission, was a member of the Kansas Department of Corrections Community Corrections Advisory Committee, and an active member and immediate past president of the Kansas Community Corrections Association. She also served on the K-State Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (Institutional Review Board) for many years.

Regarding her decision to retire, Williams stated, “It was just time. Change is good for an organization and I’m confident new leadership will breathe new life into the agency.” Shelly plans to visit her two adult children and help her husband on the ranch as he builds his longhorn breeding hobby.

Wilson, where she served as the facilitator for juvenile justice reform. Shelly led 35 community members through a strategic planning process that met the unique needs of Riley County.Shelly was promoted to the Director of Riley County Community Corrections in 2007 following the retirement of Frank McCoy who had led the agency since the early 1980’s. Under Shelly’s leadership, the agency implemented evidence-based practices in corrections, risk-based, randomized drug testing, and an emphasis on positively changing offender behavior. During her tenure, Shelly has overseen both the creation of a Youth Court and a Drug Court. Riley County Community Corrections has met the benchmark of reduced offender recidivism in all but one year of Shelly’s leadership. Shelly is most proud of developing, recruiting, and maintaining over 20 volunteer Protective Homes for children and youth placed into police protective custody.Williams was instrumental in leading Community Corrections through 10 years of flat or reduced funding. More recently, Shelly has overseen the growth of the agency budget, the first-ever financial assistance from Riley County, and met the goal of being a million-dollar agency.Williams has served on and held leadership roles within the Kansas Sentencing Commission, the Kansas Criminal Justice Reform Commission, was a member of the Kansas Department of Corrections Community Corrections Advisory Committee, and an active member and immediate past president of the Kansas Community Corrections Association. She also served on the K-State Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (Institutional Review Board) for many years.Regarding her decision to retire, Williams stated, “It was just time. Change is good for an organization and I’m confident new leadership will breathe new life into the agency.” Shelly plans to visit her two adult children and help her husband on the ranch as he builds his longhorn breeding hobby.
