Jayhawks fall at home to Coastal Carolina

Arkansas State used a 15 yard touchdown pass with :38 seconds remaining to defeat Kansas State 35-31 at Bill Snyder Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Chris Klieman noted afterwards it wasn't the outcome the Wildcats wanted. "We didn't play particularly well. I know what the guys have gone through the last month to five weeks trying to prepare to play. And we can't make excuses, the guys that played we're counting on to play and have success."

K-Stated jumped out to a 21-7 first half lead but using a halfback pass and pass off of a fake punt the Red Wolves came back to take a 28-21 lead in the fourth quarter. Kansas State drove the field to tie the game 28-28 and jumped ahead on a 35-yard field goal by Blake Lynch to make it 31-28.

Arkansas State then drove downfield for the winning score. In the closing seconds K-State had one last possession but could not score.

Klieman said he told the players in the locker room after the game that this is the type of adversity the Wildcats will face all year. "Not knowing who's going to be in, who's going to be out, but that's reality, that's the hand we're dealt and you have to be prepared to tee it up and play." The coach added he appreciated the resolve of the players, however. "I appreciate a number of guys that probably didn't anticipate playing. Even though we knew the guys that were out we had a lot of guys get banged up in the game that had to step up." For example the Wildcats got down to their third team center and third team safety but Klieman observed that they did a great job.

COVID-19 precautions were in place at the stadium with temperature checks in place and attendance limited. Total attendance was calculated at 11,041 fans.&nbsp; Klieman said he was nervous up until late Friday afternoon that K-State would even play the game.

K-State travels to Oklahoma Sept. 26 and hosts Texas Tech Oct. 3.

DJ Giddens of Junction City rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns in a 36-29 Blue Jay win over Manhattan Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium. With the victory Junction City ( 1-1 ) claimed possession of the Sportsmanship Trophy that goes to the winning team, for the coming year.

Giddens scored what proved to be the game winning touchdown on a 10-yard run late in the fourth quarter. Teammate Andrew Khoury completed 14-24 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Marcello Bussey caught six passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns.

For Manhattan Vinny Smith rushed 27 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns while Dayne Aschenbrenner carried the ball 18 times for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman called Manhattan a great team. "They're so big, they're so physical, they're so strong. Those kids are just so strong. Our kids just kept battling and overcome it."

The Big 12 has secured access to COVID-19 antigen testing that produces rapid results and will be used the day before competition on players, coaches and staff. The conference announced a partnership with Virtual Care for Families. 

The testing program will use Quidel Rapid Antigen tests. The Pac-12 recently announced a partnership with Quidel that will provide its schools with the capacity to test daily and get results in about 15 minutes. The Big 12 said it expects the Quidel test to provide results that quickly.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, and the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Knowles is the second Wildcat to be a candidate for the award as running back&nbsp;John Hubert&nbsp;– a Waco native – was a preseason candidate in&nbsp;2013.

A product of Mansfield, Texas, Knowles played in 11 games with eight starts last season, hauling in 27 catches for 397 yards and three touchdowns as he earned votes from the league’s coaches for the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award. K-State heads into Year 2 under Klieman with high hopes

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;K-State football will open the season with a pair of daytime kicks as the Big 12 Conference and its television partners announced game times and television designations for the first weekend of action and select games throughout the season.

The Wildcats’ September 12 home opener against Arkansas State is slated for a 2:30 p.m., kickoff on FS1. Following a bye week, K-State travels to Norman, Oklahoma, for an 11 a.m., contest that will be shown on FOX.

Fans attending K-State’s season opener against the Red Wolves next Saturday are reminded of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/news/2020/8/17/k-state-approved-for-reduced-capacity-during-2020-football-season.aspx" target="_blank">new guidelines that will be in place for the 2020 season</a>, which includes mandatory face coverings, no tailgating, no re-entry, alcohols sales for purchase in the general seating sections and additional safety measures.

Beginning with K-State’s home game against Texas Tech on October 3, game times and television selections will be announced on a 12- or six-day basis for the remainder of the season.
