MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;<a>Leading the Wildcats to a school record-tying 21-point comeback victory at No. 3 Oklahoma, Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;has been named the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced Tuesday.</a>

Kansas State trailed by 21 points twice against the third-ranked Sooners, including a 35-14 deficit late in the third quarter. The Wildcats then scored 24 unanswered points en route to a 38-35 victory. It was K-State’s first road win ever over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The 21-point comeback tied with four other games for the largest comeback in school history, however the contest at OU was the latest to start the comeback as the Wildcats’ began their 24-point run with 1:36 left in the third quarter.

K-State now has a pair of top-five victories in Klieman’s two seasons as head coach after the Wildcats defeated the fifth-ranked Sooners, 48-41, last season in Manhattan. It marked the first time in school history that Kansas State defeated a top-five team in consecutive seasons.

The Wildcats, now 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in Big 12 play, will host its conference home opener this Saturday against Texas Tech. Kickoff is slated for at 2:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on FS1.

McPherson forced a third-quarter fumble in Oklahoma territory that was recovered by the Wildcats and led to a touchdown, helping K-State score on five-straight possessions in the second half to erase a school-record tying 21-point deficit. His interception came with 34 seconds remaining in the contest with the Wildcats clinging to a three-point lead. It was K-State’s third interception of the day and the third in McPherson’s career.

A native of Basehor, Kansas, McPherson’s 11 tackles nearly doubled his previous career high of six, which came last season at Mississippi State. He helped the Wildcats earn their first road win ever over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

A key play in the rally came when the Wildcats blocked a punt. "We really thought if we could get those guys off the field once we had a chance to block a punt, we were only going to get one shot at it but we thought we could get a block and we were going to come after it. Then it was the right time, we were able to get the block. "

AJ Parker blocked a fourth quarter punt and a short time later with 8:17 remaining in the game Deuce Vaughn rambled 38 yards for a score. With the PAT by Blake Lynch Kansas State tied the game at 35-35.&nbsp;

The winning points came on a 50-yard field goal by Blake Lynch with 4:32 remaining in the contest.&nbsp;

KSHSAA announces school classification changes for 2020-2021

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Royals outfielder Alex Gordon announced today that he will retire from baseball, effective this Sunday, following the season finale vs. the Detroit Tigers. 

Gordon, a seven-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner and Rawlings Platinum Glove winner (2014), ranks among the franchise’s all-time leaders in most all offensive categories, including walks (682, 3rd), home runs (190, 4th), doubles (357, 5th), extra-base hits (573, 5th), games played (1,749, 6th), at-bats (6,380, 6th), runs (867, 6th), hits (1,641, 6th) and RBI (749, 6th).

Gordon, who started all 16 postseason games during Kansas City’s 2015 World Series run, has played his entire 14-year career with Kansas City from 2007-20, making him one of three position players to play 14 seasons (or more) with the Royals, joining George Brett (21 seasons) and Frank White (18). Gordon’s 1,749 games entering tonight are the fourth most of any active player who has played for only one team, trailing Yadier Molina (2,021), Joey Votto (1,768) and Ryan Braun (1,761).

Gordon was selected second overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Nebraska and made his Major League debut on Opening Day in 2007 as a third baseman, before moving to left field during the 2010 season. In his first full season in the outfield in 2011, he earned his first of seven Rawlings Gold Glove Awards while leading the Majors with 20 outfield assists, a mark that has not been topped by any player in nine seasons since.

Gordon is one of two players—and the only outfielder—to earn seven Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in the nine-year span from 2011-19, joining third baseman Nolan Arenado, who won seven straight from 2013-19. Gordon won four straight Rawlings Gold Gloves from 2011-14, becoming the first American League outfielder to do so since Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter each won 10 straight from 2001-10. Following injury-plagued seasons in 2015-16, Gordon went on to win three more Rawlings Gold Gloves from 2017-19, and his seven Rawlings Gold Gloves are second most in Royals history, trailing only Frank White’s eight.

Gordon is also a three-time Wilson Defensive Player of the Year, earning the honor in 2014 and from 2017-18. In 2014, he was named the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winner, which honors the best overall defensive player in each league. He was the first outfielder to earn the award, which was established in 2011.

His 101 career outfield assists are most in the Majors since 2010 and rank second in Royals history behind only Amos Otis’ 116.

Gordon is the Royals’ all-time leader in leadoff home runs (14) and hit-by-pitches (121), the latter of which are 43 more than second place Mike Macfarlane (78). Gordon set a single-season career-high with an American League-most 19 plunkings in 2019, which were the second-highest single-season total in club history, trailing only David DeJesus’ 23 in 2007. Gordon’s 121 hit-by-pitches rank fourth among active players behind Anthony Rizzo (154), Shin-soo Choo (152) and Derek Dietrich (122).

Among many other things, Gordon will be remembered for one of the most iconic home runs in franchise history, a game-tying home run off Mets’ closer Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning of Game 1 in the 2015 World Series, which forced extra innings and led to a Royals win in 14 innings. Gordon also drove in the go-ahead run in Game 4 of the ALDS in Houston that year, as the Royals rallied from a four-run deficit in the eighth inning to extend the series to a fifth game that the Royals won to advance to the ALCS.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Relays, one of the longest-running track and field events in the country, will be postponed in the spring as the University of Kansas tries to deal with a massive budget shortfall caused by the coronavirus pandemic. 

The school said in announcing its decision Wednesday that postponing the relays will save at least $300,000 from the Kansas Athletics budget, and perhaps more given the likely COVID-19 testing requirements.

TOPEKA, Kan&nbsp;- The KSHSAA will utilize three sites for state cross country meets to be held on Saturday, October 31, includ­ing two new championship venues.&nbsp; Consistent with risk mitigation efforts, a third site was added to reduce the number of runners at each venue and allow for more time between races.&nbsp;

The Class 6A and 5A state meet will be held at 4 Mile Creek Resort in Augusta.&nbsp; Andover High School will be the host with Wichita State University supporting the effort with course preparation.&nbsp; WSU is very familiar with this course, as the 4 Mile Creek Resort (formerly known as RAFT) is the home course for the Shockers.&nbsp;

Once again, Wamego will welcome championship racing.&nbsp; The Class 4A and 3A state meet will be held at Wamego Country Club and be hosted by Wamego High School.

The Class 2A and 1A state meet will be held at Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria.&nbsp; Victoria High School will serve as the member school host and will be supported by the athletic department of Fort Hays State Uni­versity for this championship event.

For the first time since 1992, Rim Rock Farm is not available as one of our championship sites as the Univer­sity of Kansas has notified the KSHSAA that the venue is not open for high school events this fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Regionals will be held on Saturday, October 24 at sites that will soon be finalized.&nbsp; Class 4A, 5A, 6A will have four regional sites of eight or nine assigned schools.&nbsp; Class 2A and 3A will have 6 regional sites of 10 or 11 schools assigned.&nbsp; Class 1A will have three regional sites.

KSHSAA announces state cross country sites

DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit a homer and a double to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0.

 Matthew Boyd bounced back with a strong performance, throwing five-plus scoreless innings and giving up just two hits. Boyd allowed seven runs over three-plus innings in his previous start as Milwaukee beat Detroit 19-0 last week. 

Jakob Junis started in place of Danny Duffy, who missed the team’s flight to Detroit. Junis gave up five runs and seven hits. Detroit had lost three straight and 10 of 13 games. Kansas City had won six straight.

NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the first AP Pro32 poll of the season. Fellow AFC contender Baltimore followed at No. 2. NFC powers New Orleans, Seattle and Green Bay rounded out the top five. 

The Chiefs have been riding high since winning the Super Bowl in February and opened the 2020 season with a win over the Houston Texans. Baltimore began with a rout of the Cleveland Browns. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers debuted in the poll at No. 14 in Brady's first season outside New England.
